3 en-USVERO BEACH Childrens Home Monen-US -en-US tessori is a private, state-licensed preschool en-US in Vero Beach that offers a Montessori proen-US -en-US gram. The home-based school is owned and en-US directed by Sandy Hamrick, an American en-US Montessori Society credentialed teacher en-US who is licensed by the Florida Department en-US of Children and Families as a family home en-US child care.en-US We follow the Montessori philosophy, en-US Ms. Hamrick told Hometown News. en-US The schools namesake, Dr. Maria Monen-US -en-US tessori, was born in Italy in 1870. In 1894, en-US she was the first woman to graduate with a en-US degree in medicine from the University of en-US Rome. In 1899 she began her study of eduen-US -en-US cational problems of children, and in 1922 en-US was appointed government inspector of en-US schools in Italy.en-US Dr. Montessori wrote six books on learnen-US-en-US ing and the child. She helped to establish the en-US first known child labor laws in Italy, and was en-US nominated five times for the Noble Peace en-US Prize. Dr. Montessori died in 1952.en-US Montessori is a hands-on learning envien-US -en-US ronment, Ms. Hamrick said. We are a en-US multi-age level program where the children en-US have freedom of movement in the classen-US-en-US room, freedom to learn individually.en-US Ms. Hamrick and her daughter/partner en-US Taylor Flinchum are directresses in the en-US classroom. They let the child choose the en-US things they want to learn.en-US Children attend Childrens Home Monen-US -en-US tessori from age two and a half through Kinen-US-en-US dergarten.en-US By the time the two-and-a-half year old en-US becomes the Kindergartener in the classen-US-en-US room, they become excellent role models for en-US the new two-and-a-half year olds coming en-US into the program.en-US Montessori teachers are trained to be en-US peaceful, loving, and kind, Ms. Hamrick en-US said. We dont raise our voice. If there is a en-US challenge or a child who gets upset, we sit en-US them down and talk about what happened en-US and how it makes them feel. We teach the en-US kids to work together to make everybody en-US feel better. Then they learn to listen to each en-US other, understand that how they feel is how en-US their friend feels.en-US The Montessori philosophy is to cultivate en-US a childs natural desire to learn. A child en-US experiences the excitement of learning by en-US using all of their senses in a multi-age, en-US child-centered, structured environment, en-US specifically prepared to provide freedom of en-US choice and movement that will encourage en-US the individual childs unique learning style. en-US Self-correcting hands-on exercises are en-US designed to be mentally challenging and en-US specific to each area of the classroom. en-US Included are lessons on language, practical en-US life experiences, math, science, geography, en-US culture, music and art.en-US Practical life exercises help develop the en-US childs attention span, including scooping, en-US pouring, buttoning, snapping, zipping, lacen-US-en-US ing, and tying. en-US Each lesson is designed for a specific age, en-US as the child moves forward through the en-US three-year program, said Ms. Hamrick. en-US The lessons are given one-on-one, or in en-US groups of three children of a similar age en-US level, allowing a self-paced, self-motivated en-US instruction that is time-tested and based on en-US scientific research, with 100 years of success en-US in diverse cultures around the en-US world.en-US Sandy Hamrick holds a en-US Bachelors Degree in Liberal en-US Studies, and is credentialed en-US and certified by the American en-US Montessori Society for ages en-US three through Kindergarten. en-US Ms. Hamrick owned and ran en-US Treasure Coast Montessori for en-US 20 years, and has a total of 30 en-US years in the Early Learning en-US field. Childrens Home Monen-US -en-US tessori has been operated out en-US of her home for nine years, in en-US the same location. Ms. Hamen-US -en-US rick is licensed for 10 children en-US each day.en-US Ms. Hamrick was raised in en-US Vero Beach and graduated en-US from Vero Beach High School.en-US People choose us because en-US its small and intimate. There en-US are ten children and two adults, so its a one-en-US to-five ratio. The small ratio is important.en-US We teach them to clean up after themen-US -en-US selves after lessons, so they become self-sufen-US -en-US ficient. They put their lesson back on the en-US shelf, and roll their mats back up, very orgaen-US-en-US nized. They love those things that make en-US them feel independent.en-US Many of the skills taught at Childrens en-US Home Montessori are the same skills and en-US behaviors that the parent would like the en-US child to have in the home.en-US For physical fun, the school has a newly en-US renovated playground.en-US When children get here, they run from en-US the car to our door, theyre so excited to be en-US here. They feel free and independent. I love en-US that! They love being here because we make en-USit homey and fun and exciting. We study en-US everything. We just went on a nature walk at en-US Charles Park, looking for pine cones, pine en-US needles, acorns. We study leaves. For two en-US weeks before the nature walk, we studied the en-US things theyd be finding. We did botany lesen-US -en-US sons with botany trays so theyd understand en-US what they were looking at.en-US Childrens Home Montessori is open en-US Monday-Friday, 7:45 a.m.-5:15 p.m., Sept.en-US May. 4 en-USINDIAN RIVER COUNTY As part of en-US an accreditation process, every three years en-US the public is invited to submit comments en-US about the Indian River County Sheriffs en-US Office.en-US A team of assessors from the Commission en-US for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation en-US CFA will arrive Nov. 7 to examine all aspects en-US of the Indian River County Sheriffs Office en-US policies and procedures, management, en-US operations, and support services. The en-US assessment team will include law enforceen-US -en-US ment practitioners from similar agencies.en-US The Indian River County Sheriffs Office en-US is already internationally accredited through en-US the Commission on Accreditation for Law en-US Enforcement Agencies. Approximately 100 en-US additional Florida-based standards must be en-US met in order to receive state accredited staen-US -en-US tus. Many of the standards are critical to life, en-US health and safety issues.en-US The Indian River County Sheriffs Office en-US was initially accredited by the CFA in 2004. en-US It was then reaccredited in 2007, 2010, 2013, en-US and 2016. The reaccreditation process now en-US underway would result in a new reaccreditaen-US -en-US tion in Feb., 2019.en-US Once the assessors complete their review, en-US they report back to the CFA, which will then en-US decide if the agency is to receive a renewed en-US three-year accreditation.en-US According to the CFA website, Accredien-US -en-US tation is the certification by an independent en-US reviewing authority that an entity has met en-US specific requirements and prescribed stanen-US -en-US dards.en-US Chief David Currey of the Vero Beach en-US Police Department is currently one of the en-US CFA Commissioners.en-US The accreditation process includes an en-US in-depth review of every aspect of the agenen-US -en-US cys organization, management, operations, en-US and administration. This will include such en-US things as goals and objectives; use of en-US resources; policies and procedures; and the en-US system for correction of internal deficienen-US-en-US cies and inefficiencies.en-US The accreditation standards are meant to en-US provide norms against which agency perforen-US -en-US mance can be measured and monitored over en-US time. It is also meant to increase citizen conen-US -en-US fidence in the policies and practices of the en-US agency by creating a forum in which police en-US and citizens can work together and convey en-US expectations to each other.en-US As part of the on-site assessment, the genen-US -en-US eral public may offer comments to the en-US assessment team. A copy of the standards is en-US available through Indian River County en-US Sheriffs Office Public Records Request at en-US (772) 978-6215. I just wish en-US those were banned and the only political ads en-US allowed in mailboxes were those printed on en-US toilet paper. At least we would get some use en-US out of them.en-USGet checked now!en-USOctober is here and we will be inundated en-US with happy images of women in pink, walken-US -en-US ing 5Ks across the country, to support Breast en-US Cancer Awareness month.en-US Sadly, one out of eight women will be en-US diagnosed with breast cancer. My sister was en-US one of them. She missed her mammogram en-US for three years due to a change in jobs and en-US no health care. (Prior to our current health en-US care options.) en-US She got a mammogram at age 49, and en-US died at 55 (she lived longer than the 95th en-US percentile for advanced breast cancer). I am en-US now 56, and I am her younger sister by three en-US years. en-US Don't walk, run to get checked. Do you en-US lack health insurance? Thankfully, there are en-US organizations who provide this service for en-US free.en-US Another good friend, a marathon runner, en-US vegan, surf-loving girl, did not feel well. She en-US went to her doctor. She had advanced colon en-US cancer. She was 52 years old. She died six en-US months later. Her ashes, along with my sisen-US-en-US ter's, are forever joined.en-US Breast cancer and colon cancer are highly en-US curable if caught early. Please, get checked. en-US Male or female, young or old, your life maten-US-en-US ters.en-USWorried about the futureen-USI was living out of the country and then en-US rented in Vero Beach, then bought land in en-US Sebastian and then a second lot, and built en-US my dream house in 2004. I was living in my en-US dream house until the lagoon got polluted. en-US Three years ago we had a 20,000 fish kill en-US in Merritt Island. Next a fast train is coming en-US through our town at 100 miles per hour, not en-US making any stops in the Space or Treasure en-US Coast. And we will be getting additional en-US freight as the Panama Canal was increased en-US in size and the Port of Miami has been en-US dredged. We will be getting much more en-US freight, hazardous flammable freight which en-US no one is talking about. Can you imagine if en-US one of those freight cars was to derail what a en-US mess we would have. en-US Thanks to Rick Scott and his cronies we en-US are in this mess. How do we stop Brightline en-US and how do we stop blue green algae and en-US now red tide? Had we not already ruined en-US this state just by growth? en-USSave the treesen-USLive oak trees are beautiful when they are en-US pruned. They also have a large spread root en-US system that can take on any flooding, The en-US root system keep the soil in place during a en-US flood. They bear the brunt of the wind en-US during a hurricane and have protected my en-US house. In addition, my electric bill is $70 en-US cheaper than my neighbor's because I have a en-US large one on the south side of my house.en-US Live oaks should be planted, not torn en-US down, especially with rising water levels.en-USA cautionary tale from en-US Hurricane Florenceen-USMy husband and I are lifelong Floridians. en-US We've experienced many hurricanes.en-US Florence's biggest threat was flooding. I en-US fear that our area is potentially on track for en-US the same tragedy. We moved here because it en-US reminded us of the small town coastal en-US charm we were accustomed to growing up.en-US Now, everything is covered with concrete. en-US Just exactly where will flood waters go withen-US -en-US out the green spaces? en-US Mother Nature will inevitably reclaim en-US what is rightfully hers. Florida is at its limit en-US with people and construction. Be prepared en-US to evacuate.en-USKnow amendments en-US before votingen-USFlorida voters have an extremely importen-US-en-US ant job in understanding constitutional en-US changes, before voting on the Nov. 6 ballot. en-US You can read and share the 2018 Florida en-US Amendment Guide which can be found on en-US your county's Supervisor of Elections weben-US-en-US site. en-US We have been insulted with bundled en-US choices. Bundling violates our constituen-US-en-US tional right to fair votes, which happens in en-US Congress with atrocious omnibus bills. en-US This practice should stop. It really is insane.en-US Floridas Constitution Review Commisen-US -en-US sion convenes every 20 years to propose en-US changes for the states Constitution. Thiren-US -en-US ty-seven commission members initiated a en-US terrible disservice to voters by bundling en-US totally different initiatives into 13 confusing en-US proposals and expect voters to decipher. en-US Both parties were represented. Their names en-US can found at en-US flcrc.gov/commissioners.htmlen-US.en-US Join the effort in communicating disdain en-US for their outcome to governor, legislators, en-US members. Theyre insulting.en-US The sponsor of several amendments came en-US from the legislative branch. They all have en-USstaffs who should have studied pros and en-US cons and figured out best course for Floridien-US -en-US ans.en-US We should expect MORE from all of en-US them. This is an outrage.en-US Amendments 7, 9, 11 have been thrown en-US off the ballot by lower court because of bunen-US -en-US dling, and are being considered by Floridas en-US Supreme Court.en-US Others, such as dog racing and vaping en-US fake cigarettes (theyve combined with offen-US -en-US shore drilling) have no business being in en-US State Constitution. Some qualify individualen-US-en-US ly as a statute. None shouldve been bunen-US -en-US dled for voters. Amendment 8 has been en-US eliminated.en-US The bad government reason they bunen-US -en-US dled is that they hoped a popular idea would en-US carry an unpopular, costly, bad legislative en-US idea across the finish line. Dont let that hapen-US-en-US pen. Checking No is not always the best en-US choice either. Wireless en-US technology had advanced to the point where en-US it is replacing wire line traditional phones, en-US so dialing 911 and making sure you can en-US make the call is important. In the past, celluen-US -en-US lar providers had tried to place a tower in en-US the town with no success. So this was unique en-US in the town wanting a tower for improved en-US coverage rather than fighting the construcen-US-en-US tion of a tower. The town did want a camouen-US -en-US flaged tower, however, and selected one with en-US a lot of stealth: antenna socks, and extra en-US branches instead of a traditional steel monoen-US -en-US pole.en-US There was a process to select the actual en-US site to place the monopine. It allowed for en-US input from the citizens and their consultant en-US to evaluate the sites until the one behind the en-US Town Hall was selected. Then there was the en-US usual federal permitting process we needed en-US to follow that can sometimes throw you a en-US curve, but that part actually went well. The en-US foundation needed to be substantial and we en-US had to bore a hole 50 feet deep and 10 feet in en-US diameter. There was a concern about cave-en-US in of the walls until the steel cage and conen-US-en-US crete could be poured, but it went smoothen-US-en-US ly.en-US It took some time but eventually, we en-US were able to move forward and there is now en-US improved coverage for the citizens of Indian en-US River Shores.en-US For more information about Indian River en-US Shores matters, contact Town Clerk Laura en-US Aldrich aten-US email@example.com, en-US or visit en-US www.irshores.com. 12 en-USposed amendments will be on the ballot. Of en-US these, seven were submitted by the CRC, three en-US by the legislature, and two by citizen petition en-US initiative.en-US The CRC meets once every 20 years. Florida en-US is the only state with a constitutional amenden-US -en-US ment commission.en-US The CRC, created by Article XI, Section 2 of en-US the Florida Constitution, has 37 members. The en-US constitution sets the Attorney General as the en-US only automatic member. The Governor en-US appoints 15 commissioners including the en-US commission chair. The President of the Senate en-US appoints nine, the Speaker of the House of en-US Representatives appoints nine, and the Chief en-US Justice of the Florida Supreme Court appoints en-US three commissioners.en-US Making this years process especially chalen-US -en-US lenging is that the CRC bundled different en-US issues into the same amendment. Of the en-US amendments proposed by the CRC, only two, en-US No. 12 (Lobbying and Abuse of office by Puben-US -en-US lic Officers,) and No. 13 (Ends Dog Racing) en-US deal with one clear-cut issue. Each of the other en-US five from the CRC combined different proposen-US -en-US als.en-US These will be the most difficult decisions for en-US voters, as there are many people who agree en-US with part of an amendment and disagree with en-US the other parts, but you must vote either in en-US favor or against the whole bundle. For examen-US -en-US ple, No. 9 prohibits offshore oil and gas drilling en-US and prohibits vaping in enclosed indoor worken-US -en-US places.en-US Listed below are brief summaries of the en-US amendments on the ballot. Each is excerpted en-US from the state website, and in some cases there en-US have been disputes regarding whether the en-US states summary accurately reflects the proen-US -en-US posed amendment. Voters are urged to do en-US research and review the pros and cons. Search en-US the internet for the title and number of the en-US amendment and you will find a variety of en-US viewpoints for each.en-US (1) Increased Homestead Property Tax en-US Exemption, proposed by the Florida legislaen-US-en-US ture. Increases the homestead exemption by en-US exempting the assessed valuation of homeen-US -en-US stead property greater than $100,000 and up to en-US $125,000 for all levies other than school disen-US -en-US trict levies.en-US (2) Limitations on Property Tax Assessen-US -en-US ments, proposed by the legislature. Permaen-US-en-US nently retain provisions currently in effect that en-US limit property tax assessment increases on en-US specified non-homestead real property, except en-US for school district taxes, to 10 percent each en-US year.en-US (3) Voter Control of Gambling in Florida, en-US proposed by a citizen initiative group called en-US Voters In Charge. Ensures that voters shall en-US have the exclusive right to decide whether to en-US authorize casino gambling by requiring that all en-US casino gambling must be approved by voters. en-US Defines casino gambling and clarifies that this en-US amendment does not conflict with federal law en-US regarding state/tribal compacts.en-US (4) Voting Restoration Amendment, citien-US -en-US zens initiative proposed by Floridians for a en-US Fair Democracy, Inc. Restores voting rights of en-US Floridians with felony convictions after they en-US complete all terms of their sentence including en-US parole or probation. The amendment would en-US not apply to those convicted of murder or sexen-US-en-US ual offenses, who would continue to be permaen-US-en-US nently barred from voting unless the Governor en-US and Cabinet vote to restore their voting rights en-US on a case by case basis.en-US (5) Supermajority Vote Required to Impose, en-US Authorize, or Raise State Taxes or Fees, proen-US -en-US posed by the legislature. Prohibits the legislaen-US -en-US ture from imposing, authorizing, or raising a en-US state tax or fee except by a two-thirds vote of en-US each house. This proposal does not authorize a en-US state tax or fee otherwise prohibited by the en-US Constitution and does not apply to fees or en-US taxes imposed or authorized to be imposed by en-US a county, municipality, school board, or special en-US district.en-US Proposed amendments 6-13 are all from the en-US Constitutional Revision Commission. en-US (6) Rights of Crime Victims; Judges. Creates en-US constitutional rights for victims of crime; en-US requires courts to facilitate victims rights; en-US authorizes victims to enforce their rights en-US throughout criminal and juvenile justice proen-US -en-US cesses. Requires judges and hearing officers to en-US independently interpret statutes and rules en-US rather than deferring to government agencys en-US interpretation. Raises mandatory retirement en-US age of state judges from seventy to seventy-five en-US years; deletes authorization for judges to comen-US-en-US plete term if one-half of term has been served en-US by retirement age.en-US (7) First Responder and Military Member en-US Survivor Benefits; Public Colleges and Univeren-US -en-US sities. Creates mandatory payment of educaen-US -en-US tion and compensation benefits to qualifying en-US survivors of first responders and military en-US members who die performing official duties. en-US Requires supermajority votes by university en-US trustees and state university system board of en-US governors to raise or impose legislatively en-USauthorized fees. Establishes existing state colen-US -en-US lege system as constitutional entity; provides en-US governance structure.en-US (8) [Amendment 8 has been removed from en-US the ballot]en-US (9) Prohibits Offshore Oil and Gas Drilling; en-US Prohibits Vaping in Enclosed Indoor Worken-US -en-US places. Prohibits drilling for oil and natural gas en-US beneath all state-owned waters between the en-US mean high water line and the states outermost en-US territorial boundaries. Adds use of vapor-genen-US -en-US erating devices to prohibition of tobacco en-US smoking in enclosed indoor workplaces with en-US exceptions.en-US (10) State and Local Government Structure en-US and Operation. Requires legislature to retain en-US department of veterans affairs. Ensures elecen-US -en-US tion of sheriffs, property appraisers, supervien-US -en-US sors of elections, tax collectors, and clerks of en-US court in all counties; removes county charters en-US ability to abolish, change term, transfer duties, en-US or eliminate election of these offices. Changes en-US annual legislative session commencement date en-US in even-numbered years from March to Januen-US -en-US ary; removes legislatures authorization to fix en-US another date. Creates office of domestic secuen-US-en-US rity and counterterrorism within department en-US of law enforcement.en-US (11) Property Rights; Removal of Obsolete en-US Provision; Criminal Statutes. Removes disen-US-en-US criminatory language related to real property en-US rights. Removes obsolete language repealed by en-US voters. Deletes provision that amendment of a en-US criminal statute will not affect prosecution or en-US penalties for a crime committed before the en-US amendment; retains current provision allowen-US -en-US ing prosecution of a crime committed before en-US the repeal of a criminal statute.en-US (12) Lobbying and Abuse of Office by Puben-US -en-US lic Officers. Expands current restrictions on en-US lobbying for compensation by former public en-US officers; creates restrictions on lobbying for en-US compensation by serving public officers; proen-US-en-US vides exceptions; prohibits certain abuses of en-US public office for personal benefit.en-US (13) Ends Dog Racing. Prohibits gaming or en-US pari-mutuel entities from racing dogs in conen-US -en-US nection with wagering; eligibility of such entien-US -en-US ties to conduct other authorized pari-mutuel en-US and gaming activities is not affected; prohibits en-US wagering on outcome of in-state live dog races.en-US For more information about the CRC proen-US -en-US posals or process, visit the CRC website, flcrc.en-US gov, where you can read theen-US CRCs final report and view proposal histoen-US -en-US ry and vote records. Its a topic that en-US everybody knows about and yet most of us en-US are guilty of not taking it seriously enough. en-US And those of us who do take it seriously are en-US often doing it wrong. What is it that Im en-US writing about this week? If you guessed en-US backing up your computer, you're right!en-US Over the years I know I have touched on en-US this subject a number of times but what has en-US prompted me to touch on it again is the en-US other half of the equation that never seems en-US to get any attention. You see, so much time en-US is spent on how important having a backup en-US is, how to perform the backup or what en-US needs to be included in the backup that the en-US equally important subject of how to restore en-US the backup gets neglected. en-US Then, when disaster does strike and en-US people have to go restore from backup the en-US recovery steps that they are following (if en-US any) often dont work. A lot of the backup en-US software thats out there make assumptions en-US about the backup/recovery situation that en-US dont necessarily fit your situation. Then the en-US steps dont make any sense and youre left en-US feeling lost. en-US Heres a for instance; one backup utility en-US that I know of makes the assumption that en-US the computer itself is intact but the data en-US itself became lost or corrupt. Then, the en-US recovery steps make suggestions like en-US double click the restore icon on your en-US desktop which makes no sense if you are en-US restoring after a hard drive crash or en-US replacing a computer. en-US Another example involves ghosting or en-US imaging software. This backup concept is en-US that if you regularly image (or ghost) your en-US machine, then recovering from hard drive en-US disaster is a snap just re-image a new hard en-US drive and all of your data and settings is en-US restored exactly as they were right before en-US disaster struck. But what happens if the en-US disaster isnt with the hard drive but with en-US the motherboard? What if you are simply en-US trying to move all of your data and settings en-US to an altogether new machine? Usually en-US trying to restore backup data from an image en-US disk only works if the computer that is en-US being re-imaged has exactly the same en-US hardware as the machine that is being en-US replaced. If you can get the image to load at en-US all (on different hardware) you usually end en-US up with a ton of driver issues and other en-US things that have to be cleaned up.en-US I had one frustrated computer user ask en-US me recently what good is having the en-US backup running every night if it still costs en-US time and money to have someone come out en-US to restore it? Ill answer that here backing en-US up your data is a necessary chore. Without a en-US backup running regularly, when you do en-US have a disaster (whether its a hard drive en-US crash or some other catastrophic failure) en-US then switching to a new machine is easy if en-US losing all of your data is OK with you!en-US But what if you would like your new en-US machine to have all your stuff in it? en-US Wouldnt it be nice if your new machine (or en-US hard drive) had all of your documents in en-US your Documents folder? And all those en-US programs that were installed on the old en-US machine? Wouldnt it be nice to know how en-US to get those back?en-US Well, all that stuff has to be restored and en-US the new machine tweaked until it matches en-US the way you had it as close as possible. en-US Programs that were in use on the old en-US machine have to be reinstalled on the new en-US you cant just restore it from backup, it has en-US to be reinstalled. Favorites and email all en-US have to be imported and applications that en-US may not be on the new box have to be en-US installed. en-US Take accounting data as a for instance en-US backing up the data is one thing but people en-US are often surprised to learn that they need en-US to reload the accounting software on the en-US new machine if they want to be able to en-US restore that accounting data. en-US Chores like reinstalling software and en-US importing the data from backup can take a en-US lot longer than it takes to set up a regular en-US nightly backup but what it all comes down en-US to is this its better to be struggling with en-US restoring your data then to be wishing you en-US had something to struggle with! So backup en-US your data anyways!en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. He can be en-US reached at 888-752-9049 oren-US help@Compuen-US -en-US teThisOnline.comen-US (no hyphens).
