I especially appreciated en-US the interviews with the local candidates for en-US office which gave me a great deal of inforen-US -en-US mation about each and which helped me en-US make my voting decisions.en-US I am also very impressed with the level of en-US interaction you get from your readers. The en-US Rants and Raves pages lately have been en-US chock full of informed, balanced and ratioen-US -en-US nal opinions which have been delivered en-US with civility and concern for our national en-US condition. I can only say that if most of en-US your readers are this well informed and conen-US -en-US cerned, and all of them come out to vote in en-US the November 6th elections, our country, en-US state, counties, and municipalities will be in en-US good hands.en-US I find myself saying "wow" every time I en-US read a new article or a new Rant/Rate. Keep en-US up the good work. You have touched a cord en-US with people who crave real, factual informaen-US-en-US tion about our society, and they trust you to en-US consistently provide what they need to make en-US important decisions.en-USFDR was greatest president everen-USThe greatest president in my 85 years was en-US a president named Franklin Delano Roosen-US -en-US evelt.en-US FDR inherited the greatest depression in en-US our history from republicans Herbert en-US Hoover, Calvin Coolidge and Warren G. en-US Harding.en-US In 1935, FDR gave us Social Security, then en-US the GI Bill without any votes from the en-US republicans.en-US FDR led us to victory in World War II and en-US got us out of the Great Depression.en-US Thank you, FDR, for the greatest governen-US -en-US ment program ever, Social Security.en-US How about the other great government en-US program, Medicare?en-US The only thing FDR gave Russia was food en-US and arms to help us defeat Adolf Hitler.en-US Wake up America, look at the disaster in en-US the White House now, a Republican.en-USAddresses should en-US be easy to seeen-USOverall, it is sad how many communities en-US just wall themselves up, keeping everyone en-US out.en-US I also find them dangerous since there is en-US only one way in and one way out of their en-US community. If an emergency were to occur, en-US this coule prove hazardous. I don't underen-US -en-US stand why counties don't enforce a second en-US exit rule, especially for large communities.en-US Speaking of danger, I work in the delivery en-US industry and have found there is no contien-US -en-US nuity of numbering complexes. One comen-US-en-US plex can have numbers on the building, othen-US-en-US ers letters.en-US At night, it often is difficult to see the en-US addresses.en-US I am surprised that the fire chief hasn't en-US enforced better signs.en-US I know it is frustrating for me, I can't en-US imagine how difficult it can be for emergenen-US -en-US cy personnel.en-US An idea I have is to number the driveway en-US before each house, and with complexes, en-US have solar lighting on signage (also clearing en-US away plants so one can see the signs). I really en-US do not understand why there isn't more en-US concern over the lack of numbering builden-US -en-US ings or houses.en-US I cannot tell you how many homes I deliven-US-en-US er to that do not even have their house numen-US -en-US ber.en-US There should be fines for people who do en-US not number their homes properly. Numbers en-US on the drive would be still there in case of a en-US major catastrophe. Am I the only one conen-US -en-US cerned?en-USUse bats and fish against pestsen-USThe rain has been good for mosquitoes. en-US But our first line of defense should not be en-US poisoning the environment.en-US Make sure there is no standing water in en-US the neighborhoods. Ponds can be stocked en-US with fish (e.g., Gambusia) that eat mosquito en-US eggs and larvae. en-US Put up a bat house. One bat can eat more en-US than 1,000 mosquitoes in one night. Poison en-US should be the last and little used option.en-USEnsure a seniors well-beingen-USHeat exhaustion can sneak up, causing en-US increased body temperature, rapid pulse, en-US headache and fatigue. If you dont get cool, en-US youll dehydrate, possibly suffer a stroke, or en-US worse, die.en-US Of 8,000-plus heat-related fatalities en-US reported annually in the United States, 36 percent are among those age 65 and en-USolder, according to a Centers for Disease en-US Control Heat-Related Illness Survey. en-US 8 en-USp.m., is Stranger than Fiction: Amazing en-US True Stories a New Sequel.en-US This is a brand new sequel to last years en-US well-received series of films based on true en-US stories or real events, says the course en-US description. Comprised of a mix of foreign en-US and American films, including dramas and en-US well-appointed documentaries, well visit en-US some fascinating and unique people and en-US places, allowing us to experience new and en-US unusual customs and traditions. All film en-US genres have something to offer, but as we en-US learned last year, there is something extra en-US special when the film represents real life. en-US Everyone knows the remarkable story of en-US Helen Keller and her equally famous tutor. en-US But, did you know the French lay claim to en-US their own Helen Keller? Born just five years en-US later than Helen, Marie Heurtins story, and en-US that of her awesome teacher, is no less en-US inspiring.en-US The third class series, Ciao! Italia: Films en-US Celebrating the Spirit of Italy, begins Jan. 8.en-US Over the years, we have periodically en-US looked at some films from Italy, mostly coven-US -en-US ering the earlier, more formative years in the en-US history of that nations cinema, says the en-US VBMA description. This time around well en-US focus more on recent contributions, as Italy en-US begins to break away from its roots in dark en-US Neo Realism. With a nod to one early comic en-US classic, Mafioso introduces us to the world en-US of Mafia, acknowledging for the first time in en-US Italian film its true existence. This was a en-US bold move indeed, about a previously en-US underground subject. It would be many en-US years later before that subject would be en-US treated so openly in culture and the arts, en-US after the advent of Tony Soprano made en-US Mafia a household word. Well then jump en-US forward in time, for a broader, more moden-US -en-US ern selection of films about life in Italy, as en-US only the Italians can portray it.en-US In addition to the film classes, the VBMA en-US is also presenting a series of film viewings, en-US free with paid admission. First up is the en-US 1987 German film Wings of Desire on Oct. en-US 18 at 4:30 p.m.en-US Produced, directed, and written by Wim en-US Wenders, Wings of Desire is a romantic fanen-US -en-US tasy about angels seeking to comfort people en-US in Berlin. It was written when Berlin was en-US still divided by the Berlin Wall, exploring en-US the lives, dreams, and daily problems of Beren-US -en-US liners. The Berlin Wall serves to punctuate en-US the films themes of living in a divided en-US world, as well as divisions in individual en-US lives.en-US Actor Peter Falk adds an intriguing sub-en-US plot, playing a filmmaker who visits Berlin en-US to make a film about the citys Nazi past.en-US Fans of obscure 1980s rock will especially en-US enjoy a bar scene filmed during a concert by en-US Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.en-US As with other Wim Wenders films like en-US Buena Vista Social Club and his numerous en-US music videos for U2 and Talking Heads, en-US each frame of the film is intended to be a en-US stand-alone piece of art, with great care en-US taken regarding composition, light, and en-US shadow. Mr. Wenders is an accomplished en-US photographer, with dozens of critically-acen-US-en-US claimed exhibits worldwide.en-US Film classes cost $75 for members, $90 en-US for non-members. Film viewings are includen-US-en-US ed with museum admission, which is free en-US for members, $10 seniors, $12 non-member en-US adults. In 2002, sevenen-US -en-US ty-one percent of Floridas citizens voted for a en-US constitutional amendment to prohibit smoken-US -en-US ing in all enclosed indoor workplaces. The en-US smoke free law became effective July 1, 2003. en-US Fifteen years later, does your worksite have a en-US Tobacco Free policy? en-US Secondhand smoke contains hundreds of en-US chemicals known to be toxic or carcinogenic en-US (to cause cancer). Research shows there is no en-US safe level of SHS and even brief exposure can en-US be harmful. Secondhand smoke causes more en-US than 40,000 deaths in nonsmokers every year en-US and the majority of those deaths, 82%, are en-US from heart disease. en-US Employees are valuable assets. A written en-US Tobacco Free worksite policy is one of the en-US most supportive actions employers can take en-US to create worksite wellness. It helps employees en-US stay healthy and productive while restricting en-US access and social pressures to use tobacco at en-US work. en-US Do you know an employee that takes a en-US smoke break more than twice a day? If so, that en-US employee is being paid to satisfy their addicen-US -en-US tion to nicotine at a rate roughly equal to 8% en-US of their salary. A Tobacco Free Worksite polien-US-en-US cy protects the employer from lost productiven-US -en-US ity, creates equity among employees and is en-US good for smokers and nonsmokers alike. A en-US 2015 tobacco policy survey conducted with en-US members of the Society for Human Resource en-US Management found that only 30% of particien-US -en-US pants surveyed limited smoking breaks. This en-US hurts productivity and employee morale.en-US A Tobacco Free policy is a compassionate en-US act that supports employee wellness. It en-US encourages smokers to cut back on their en-US smoking and it may be the incentive they en-US need to quit. Nearly 70% of smokers would en-US like to quit; and many may quit multiple en-US times before success is achieved. en-US A Tobacco Free Worksite Policy does not en-US require employees to quit, but it should make en-US employees aware of quit opportunities; like en-US tobacco cessation class schedules and Tobacen-US -en-US co Free Floridas Quit Your Way cessation en-US program. Quit Your Way can be reached by en-US calling 1-877-822-6669.en-US If you are an employer looking for guiden-US -en-US ance on developing a Tobacco Free Worksite en-US Policy, here are some tips to consider:en-US Smokers usually congregate on breaks and en-US socialize as well as smoke. Smokers should be en-US granted the same number and length of en-US breaks as other employees. Nonsmokers typien-US-en-US cally carry the workload for co-workers who en-US are smoking on the clock. en-US Tobacco cessation counseling doubles a en-US persons quit success rate. Quit Your Way is en-US free! Employees may be eligible for free cessaen-US-en-US tion aids like nicotine replacement patches or en-US lozenges. Different types of counseling are en-US available including text reminders, web-en-US based, 24 hour phone access, and classes. en-US Quitting can take several attempts (the en-US average is 8-11 times) and employees attempten-US -en-US ing to quit should be encouraged to keep tryen-US -en-US ing.en-US Worksite policies should prohibit the use of en-US all tobacco products, including E-Cigarettes, en-US or Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems en-US (ENDS).en-US E-Cigarettes are not an FDA approved en-US smoking cessation device; they are an alternaen-US -en-US tive nicotine delivery system that will mainen-US -en-US tain or regenerate a persons addiction to nicen-US-en-US otine.en-US Refillable Electronic Nicotine Delivery en-US Systems can be used to vape other drugs, en-US most commonly marijuana.en-US Employers can arrange an onsite Quit Class en-US for employees by calling the Everglades Area en-US Health Education Center at 1.877.819.2357. en-US The Tools to Quit class is only 2 hours long en-US and can help people who are on the fence en-US about quitting or want to make a quit attempt.en-US Regularly post quit information for en-US employees via all communication channels. It en-US will remind them they are included in your en-US effort to establish a culture of wellness. en-US A Tobacco Free Worksite Policy protects en-US your employees, customers, vendors and visien-US-en-US tors from exposure to secondhand smoke. en-US A Tobacco Free policy protects the employen-US-en-US ers financial investment and their most valuen-US -en-US able resource, the employee.en-US Creating a Tobacco Free worksite is not a en-US one size fits all undertaking. Implementing a en-US policy takes planning and intention spanning en-US several months to a year for large organizaen-US -en-US tions. It should be a process of building up to en-US a predetermined start date that celebrates en-US quitting like the Great American Smokeout en-US or a New Years Resolution. A Re-Opening, a en-US New Management, a move, or a Grand Openen-US -en-US ing can also be the perfect time to implement en-US a Tobacco Free Worksite policy.
