en-US 3 en-USSEBASTIAN Leslie Wayment and her en-US husband of 39 years, David, were looking en-US for a location to create an adult hangout en-US when they heard that their favorite coffee en-US shop and used bookstore was in danger of en-US closing. So they bought it, and on Sept. 1 en-US they will celebrate their first full year as en-US owners of Riverview Coffee, Tea & Books.en-US While enjoying a delightful Mexican cofen-US -en-US fee from the Chiapas region, Leslie and en-US David explained how the business got starten-US -en-US ed.en-US Originally this was Squidleys Books, at en-US another location, Leslie explained. Over en-US time it went through various owners and a en-US couple of name changes.en-US A friend and I liked to meet here at least en-US once a week and have a bagel and cappuccien-US-en-US no, and sit and talk. Last year, I heard that it en-US was available.en-US We didnt want this place to close, said en-US Leslie. We liked coming here, we liked the en-US location, we liked the idea of an adult hangen-US-en-US out. So we bought it. I was a pharmacist for en-US 30 years. Pharmacists can follow recipes. I en-US worked at the Library of Congress in Washen-US -en-US ington, DC as a student. So I knew a little bit en-US about books.en-US With that knowledge and both David and en-US Leslies retail experience, and a love of good en-US coffee, they dove in, and the results are a en-US success that Sebastian residents and visitors en-US are raving about.en-US As the name indicates, the store is a cross en-US between a caf and a book store. Both en-US aspects offer lots of variety to please all palen-US -en-US ates.en-US The well-stocked bookstore is divided en-US into sections like education and en-US home-schooling, cook books, health, busien-US -en-US ness, sports, fiction, sci-fi, paranormal, en-US health, and cookbooks. There is a big biogen-US -en-US raphy section, and a large selection of relien-US -en-US gious books, both fiction and non-fiction. en-US There is a childrens and young adults secen-US -en-US tion, with classics like Nancy Drew and en-US Hardy Boys, so its also a nice place for paren-US -en-US ents to come with a child, hang out and have en-US a cup of coffee or tea while the child browsen-US-en-US es.en-US We have a credit system, so you can en-US trade books in and earn credit towards puren-US -en-US chase of other used books, David said. And en-US as part of their commitment to the commuen-US -en-US nity, Leslie and David donate some books to en-US charitable organizations and churches so en-US they dont go to waste.en-US We also have a Teachers Club, David en-US said. Some people who trade in books ask en-US that we give their credit to the Teachers en-US Club. That way any teacher in the county en-US can use that credit.en-US They dont need to be books for the en-US classroom, Leslie added. Teachers need en-US relaxation too. So the teachers can come in en-US and find a book for themselves and use en-US some Teachers Club credit. A lot of our clien-US -en-US ents would rather that their credit money go en-US towards the teachers.en-US One shelf is stocked with classic games en-US like Battleship and Sorry. Families are welen-US -en-US come to come in, sit down and play a game, en-US said Leslie. We always have checkers and en-US chess out.en-US On one table sat a started jigsaw puzzle. en-US Customers are welcome to sit down with en-US their coffee and work on the puzzle. When it en-US is complete, the Wayments break out a difen-US -en-US ferent puzzle for customers to work on.en-US The most fun aspect of the business is en-US that you can choose your experience. If you en-US want to sit quietly and enjoy a coffee or tea en-US and a light meal, you can. But if you want en-US options to stimulate the mind like the en-US games, puzzles, books, or meeting new en-US friends, that is available too.en-US As we spoke, I found myself focused on en-US the delicious coffee. The first thing I noticed en-US was how clean it tasted not even a hint of en-US the bitterness one can encounter when a en-US coffee machine or air pot has not been propen-US -en-US erly cleaned. This was darned good coffee, en-US and if I had more time I would have samen-US-en-US pled several others.en-US Our standards are vanilla, Kenyan Sumaen-US -en-US tra mix dark roast, and a Columbian medien-US-en-US um roast, Leslie explained. First I'll help you en-US teach many of our drivers to either slow en-US down, obey the speed limit and refer to tge en-US state laws or take a refresher course. In 14 en-US years I've lost count of near misses because en-US of improper driving (too fast, too sliw, no en-US turn signal, going thru red lights and stop en-US signs). en-US Wake up folks, you're at risk as well. en-US A couple of years ago I had a near fatal en-US accident because the driver felt that she had en-US to turn now because she was running late. en-US She thought that she could make make it. en-US Guess what she was late now.en-US For those that like to earn discounts and en-US to save your life and life of others there's a en-US refresher course you can take online. It's en-US worth it and trust me you will learn a few en-US things and be glad that you did. Afterall en-US safety first.en-USVotingen-USWith all the television advertisements and en-US mailers, its hard to know who to believe en-US when it comes to voting. If there is no record en-US to look at, you must educate yourself by en-US looking at the background of the candidate. en-US Sometimes it is easy to understand WHY a en-US person would want to go through the proen-US -en-US cess of an election where their personal life en-US becomes a part of public record. Public seren-US -en-US vants who choose to run are few and far en-US between. Usually, unfortunately, there is a en-US motive behind their desire to serve the puben-US -en-US lic. But there are those willing to put forth en-US the effort to represent you. en-US You can follow the money and sometimes en-US that will help you understand who is behind en-US a candidate and whether that is a factor for en-US your vote. Street signs also catch your eye en-US but are not a good idea to choose a candien-US -en-US date. Whatever your passion is, whether it en-US be to clean up our waterways, better schools, en-US limiting taxes or the future of social security, en-US educate yourself before you go to vote, fill in en-US your sample ballot and check on those you en-US are not sure of by asking questions. Your en-US vote determines everyone's future!en-USSavings bondsen-USI just redeemed a $100 savings bond I en-US bought in 1989. I earned $298 interest on en-US the $100. The problem is that $100 in 1989 en-US is equivalent to $203 in 2018 but they dont en-US adjust the original price for inflation. If they en-US did, they would adjust the original price to en-US $203, reducing the interest to $195. Conen-US -en-US sidering that the government has a goal of en-US promoting inflation, i.e. reducing the value en-US of your money, should they also tax the en-US interest you earn just to keep up?en-USThrow-away animals en-USThat is what our cats and kittens have en-US become. So often when someone moves en-US away they leave their cat behind, in the en-US house or outside, to fend for themselves. We en-US find them under dumpsters, in empty lots, en-US and often wandering around neighboren-US -en-US hoods looking for someone to feed them. en-US Here is a news flash...cats are not self-suffien-US -en-US cient. They rely on their humans to feed en-US them and give them love and attention. en-US They are much safer inside than out, and if en-US abandoned outside will survive as best they en-US can by eating garbage, rats, mice, and gecken-US -en-US os, all of which can make them very sick. en-US Abandoned cats who wander neighboren-US -en-US hoods looking for someone to take care of en-US them often face people who chase them en-US away or worse. Add to that the possibility en-US that they are not fixed, and we wind up with en-US kittens born outside and even more unwanten-US -en-US ed cats. en-US Yes, we have gotten a little better with en-US spay and rescue programs, as well as trap/en-US fix/release programs, BUT, shelters need our en-US help. They need volunteers. Shelters rely en-US heavily on volunteers and donations to stay en-US up and running. Donations such as food en-US and cat litter are always needed, but volunen-US-en-US teers to help scoop out litter boxes, and nuren-US -en-US ture and spend time with the animals are en-US also crucial. en-US Foster families are also needed. Fostering en-US an animal to get them out of the shelters and en-US into home environments, ready for adopen-US -en-US tion, is a great alternative to permanent en-US adoption if you are not quite ready for the en-US commitment of adoption. You might think, en-US "How can I take an adorable cat or kitten en-US into my house and then give them up?" I do en-US it by thinking of myself as their granden-US -en-US mother. I love them and take care of them en-US and then hand them over to their forever en-US home, knowing I helped prepare them to be en-US there. en-US Have you considered making volunteeren-US -en-US ing at Dogs and Cats Forever or another en-US no-kill shelter such as Domino's House in en-US Palm City a family activity for you and your en-US kids? Are you retired? If so, perhaps you en-UShave a few hours a week to dedicate to volen-US -en-US unteering? How about church or school en-US community service projects for teenagers en-US over 15? Animal therapy is good for the en-US soul, and the animals will benefit from the en-US attention more than you know. It is a win-en-US win situation. Please consider calling the en-US shelter of your choice and asking how you en-US can help. en-US Did you know the Humane Society canen-US -en-US not turn you away if you bring them a stray en-US animal? They are state-funded and they en-US must take the animals brought to them. If en-US you are turned away, please call your county en-US commissioner and let them know. en-US Wouldn't it be nice if more people took an en-US active role in reducing the population of en-US stray and unwanted animals?en-USIncorporationen-USWhy is there no information in the en-US Hometown News about the Hobe Sound en-US Incorporation initiative? This issue is en-US extremely important to the future of not en-US only Hobe Sound but the entire area. en-US Most of the current discussion on both en-US sides of this subject is filled with name callen-US -en-US ing, accusations, and confusing representaen-US-en-US tions of what may or can happen if voters en-US elect incorporation. The only thing people en-US on both sides agree on is that there will be en-US more development. en-US We need the true unbiased facts about en-US what incorporation will mean. What will en-US the impact be on municipal services and en-US taxes? Why dont we have five and ten year en-US financial projections? Who will be the en-US elected representatives and what qualificen-US -en-US tions do they need? en-US It appears certain that developers will en-US make money if this goes through, but at en-US what impact and cost to the residents? We en-US dont have the factual information we need en-US to make an informed decision. Florida Focused. talking about. en-USI wish I knew what he was talking about, en-US Ms. Swan said. Asked if Sen. Nelson or any en-US state or federal officials had contacted her en-US with any indication that Indian River Counen-US -en-US ty was one of the penetrated systems, Ms. en-US Swan said I havent heard a word. I can tell en-US you I havent been contacted.en-US I know people are very skeptical about en-US everything, Ms. Swan added. Were doing en-US everything that we possibly can.en-US Given that Florida was one of 21 states en-US notified by the Department of Homeland en-US Security that it had been targeted by hackers en-US in the 2016 election, Ms. Swan understood en-US that voter concerns are high. She referred en-US Hometown News to a letter written Aug. 9 en-US by Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner to en-US Senator Richard Burr, Chairman, U.S. Senen-US-en-US ate Select Committee on Intelligence.en-US I am very concerned by comments made en-US yesterday by Senator Bill Nelson saying that en-US the Russians are in Floridas elections en-US records and that they have already peneen-US-en-US trated certain counties in the state and they en-US now have free rein to move about without en-US any evidence or details to support such a en-US claim, Secretary Detzner wrote. I am also en-US concerned that when questioned by memen-US -en-US bers of the media on the validity of this en-US claim, Senator Nelson refused to elaborate en-US other than claim that the information was en-US classified.en-US With Floridas Primary Election only en-US three weeks away and the General Election en-US soon to follow, it is imperative that the voten-US -en-US ing public maintains confidence in our elecen-US -en-US tions system, and comments such as these en-US only serve to erode public trust in our elecen-US -en-US tions at a critical time.en-US Ms. Swan told Hometown News that she en-US has never seen any evidence that either the en-US voter registration system or the vote tabulaen-US-en-US tion system in Indian River County has en-US been accessed by anyone unauthorized to en-US do so.en-US I have no evidence that either one of en-US those has been penetrated, Ms. Swan said. en-US We just got the new voting system last year. en-US We used it for the first time for the Novemen-US -en-US ber municipal election for the city of Vero en-US Beach and the City of Sebastian. After the en-US election was over, we did a post-election en-US audit, where we pick a precinct and a race en-US and we count by hand the number of votes en-US cast in that race for vote-by-mail ballots, en-US and election day ballots, and they were the en-US exact same number.en-US As far as the voter registration system, en-US weve had probably 18,000 people call us en-US and request mail ballots, and every one of en-US them that requested the ballot has been in en-US the system, so I dont have any evidence of en-US anyones names being taken off the rolls that en-US werent supposed to be by the methods desen-US -en-US ignated by the Florida statutes, like if they en-US pass away, or theyre convicted of a felony, en-US that kind of thing.en-US We also discussed recent reports from a en-US hacker convention, where two 11-year old en-US children were allegedly able to hack into a en-US replica of the Florida Division of Elections en-US voting computer and change results in less en-US than 15 minutes.en-US I did hear of the story but I dont know of en-US anything about it, Ms. Swan said. When en-US asked if she was confident that hackers en-US could not change vote tabulations, that the en-US system was impenetrable, she declined to en-US give an absolute assurance.en-US Nothing is foolproof. You do the best en-US that you can to secure the voter registration en-US system and the voten-US-en-US ing system itself. en-US Nothing is impeneen-US -en-US trable. You see these en-US major corporations en-US like Equifax, Target, en-US Uber theyve goten-US-en-US ten hacked. We are en-US doing all that we can en-US do with the resourcen-US -en-US es that we have. And en-US we are taking this en-US very seriously. But en-US nothing is impeneen-US-en-US trable.en-US Ms. Swan was en-US confident that the system used in Florida en-US has many safeguards.en-US The entire state is all paper ballots, en-US except Palm Beach County is the only counen-US -en-US ty that hasnt upgraded their system. For en-US everyone else except for voters with disabilien-US-en-US ties, they are all paper. Before we got our en-US new system, for voters with disabilities we en-US did have a touch screen machine, which was en-US a digital recording device and there was no en-US paper, but now since we upgraded our sysen-US -en-US tem we can do a total recount of the election en-US on paper.en-US We do a recount by law if its less than .05 en-US percent difference between the two candien-US-en-US dates, and if its .025 percent we go in and do en-US a hand count.en-US Our voting system is not connected to en-USthe internet. If there were any issue, we en-US could go back and hand count all the ballots. en-US We have the paper ballots, then every en-US machine at the polling place or at the early en-US voting sites has a paper tape at the end of en-US early voting or election day that has all the en-US results. Theres also a thumb drive inside en-US each of the voting machines that has the en-US results on it. So we have a lot of redundanen-US -en-US cy.en-US In Sen. Burrs response to Secretary en-US Detzner, he would neither confirm nor deny en-US Sen. Nelsons allegations that Floridas sysen-US -en-US tem was currently being penetrated by en-US hackers.en-US While I understand your questions en-US regarding Senator Nelsons recent public en-US comments, I respectfully advise you to conen-US-en-US tinue engaging directly with those federal en-US agencies responsible for notifying you of en-US and mitigating any potential intrusions, en-US Sen. Burr said.en-US Ms. Swan said the county has received en-US substantial aid from both the state and the en-US federal government for election security. en-US The legislature just gave a grant for $1.9 en-US million for each of the counties to install a en-US server called an Albert Server. It is monien-US-en-US tored 24/7, and if they see suspicious activien-US-en-US ties they notify us immediately so we can en-US take action immediately. The quicker you en-US remedy a problem, the less damage can be en-US done.en-US Also, there was a grant for $320 million en-US to be divided among the states. Florida got en-US $19 million. The state hired five cyber secuen-US -en-US rity experts, and then the counties each got en-US grant money depending on the size of your en-US voting population that we could use to en-US implement things such as backup servers, en-US firewalls, external hard drives, beef up secuen-US -en-US rity in the physical building. Each county en-US did different things.en-US We also had an agent from the Dept. of en-US Homeland Security come to our office, and en-US they actually made an evaluation, went en-US around the physical building, and then en-US reviewed our procedures as far as cyber-seen-US-en-US curity. And they made recommendations.en-US Were very grateful for what we got, en-US because with our budget we wouldnt have en-US been able to install these security upgrades.en-USElectionsen-USFrom page 1 Swan
