en-US 3 en-USdone.en-US U.S. District Court Judge William P. Dimen-US -en-US itrouleas sentenced Dr. Benjamin to life in en-US prison, to be followed by five years of superen-US -en-US vised release and was ordered to pay restituen-US -en-US tion in the amount of $10,241.en-US Two of the charges Dr. Benjamin was en-US convicted on carried a mandatory minien-US -en-US mum of 20 years in prison, up to life. The en-US other three charges each carried a penalty en-US up to 20 years in prison. Dr. Benjamin also en-US faced fines up to $5,000,000.en-US Benjamin G. Greenberg, United States en-US Attorney for the Southern District of Florien-US -en-US da, was joined by Deryl Loar, Sheriff, Indian en-US River County Sheriffs Office, and other en-US participating agencies in making the en-US announcement.en-US Mr. Greenberg commended the investigaen-US-en-US tive efforts of the Indian River County Sheren-US -en-US iffs Office and the other agencies that were en-US involved in the investigation.en-US The evidence presented at the trial estaben-US -en-US lished that on September 1, 2016, a young en-US woman who resided in Wellington, Florida en-US died after overdosing on counterfeit Oxycoen-US -en-US done pills, a statement released by the en-US Department of Justice, U.S. Attorneys en-US Office, Southern District of Florida said. en-US The pills contained a Fentanyl analog, en-US Furanyl Fentanyl, as the active ingredient. en-US Furanyl Fentanyl is an extremely powerful en-US synthetic opioid, many times more powerful en-US than street level heroin or Oxycodone.en-US The investigation of Dr. Benjamin was en-US begun after the overdose death in Wellingen-US-en-US ton of 34-year-old Maggie Crowley. Accorden-US -en-US ing to the U.S. Attorney, a toxicology analyen-US -en-US sis by the Office of the District Medical en-US Examiner of Palm Beach County attributed en-US the cause of Ms. Crowleys death to the en-US Furanyl Fentanyl. A law enforcement invesen-US -en-US tigation identified Dr. Benjamin as the en-US source of the Furanyl Fentanyl pills that en-US caused the death. The investigation also en-US revealed that Dr. Benjamin was involved en-US with the manufacture and distribution of en-US counterfeit Oxycodone pills, outside the en-US South Florida area, Mr. Greenberg said.en-US Dr. Benjamin was arrested on Oct. 12 and en-US originally charged in Indian River County, en-US but those charges were dropped to allow the en-US case to be handled in the federal courts.en-US This case is the result of the ongoing en-US efforts by the Organized Crime Drug en-US Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) a parten-US -en-US nership that brings together the combined en-US expertise and unique abilities of federal, en-US state and local law enforcement agencies, en-US the Dept. of Justice statement said. The en-US principal mission of the OCDETF program en-US is to identify, disrupt, dismantle and proseen-US -en-US cute members of drug trafficking, weapons en-US trafficking and money laundering organizaen-US-en-US tions and enterprises.en-US VERO BEACH June broke the record en-US for the largest number of people visiting en-US Vero Beach beaches. According to the Vero en-US Beach Lifeguard Association, 110,520 peoen-US -en-US ple were estimated to have visited the beachen-US -en-US es at and around Jaycee Park, Humiston en-US Park, and South Beach Park.en-US We count the number of people inside en-US each park, plus 200 yards north and south of en-US each park, plus people within the grassy en-US areas and boardwalks of parks, VBLA Presen-US -en-US ident Erik Toomsoo told Hometown News. en-US The numbers are estimates. We do not en-US count every person by hand.en-US This was the largest monthly number en-US since VBLA started tracking attendance in en-US 2011.en-US The fact that the attendance record was en-US shattered by over 10,000 visitors was interen-US -en-US esting considering there were many afteren-US -en-US noons in June when lightning and stormy en-US weather caused beach patrons to cut their en-US beach day short, Mr. Toomsoo said.en-US Also in June, the VBLA reported taking en-US 1,641 preventative actions, which the lifeen-US -en-US guards define as stopping potential incien-US -en-US dents before they occur.en-US The average ocean temperature in June en-US was 80 degrees.en-US June saw 32 minor medical incidents, en-US incidents treated on-site by lifeguard or en-US EMT personnel, and three major medical en-US incidents that required Emergency Medical en-US Services. There were no rip rescues for the en-US month, though there was a moderate en-US amount of stinging marine life to be dealt en-US with. There was also a brief issue with en-US moon jellyfish and sea lice causing numeren-US -en-US ous stings (minor medicals), the June en-US VBLA beach report said.en-US Sea turtles continue to lay their clutches en-US of eggs up and down the coastline, the en-US report continued. Sea shell hunters have en-US had a field day as beds of shells have been en-US deposited along the coastline. Water visibili en-US-en-US ty has been top to bottom on some days en-US allowing snorkelers and divers to enjoy the en-US natural reef system and the Breconshire en-US wreck at central beach. Lifeguards responden-US-en-US ed to a number of medical calls but there en-US were no rip current rescues in June holding en-US the total number of swimmers rescued from en-US rip currents at 24 in 2018.en-US The VBLA warns that, as beach attenen-US -en-US dance increases, more people swim outside en-US the guarded areas. This increases the chancen-US -en-US es of accidents. The VBLA continues to en-US advise swimmers to pay attention to beach en-US condition signs and flags, swim near lifeen-US -en-US guard towers, and avoid swimming during en-US non-guarded en-US hours.en-US Divers and snoren-US -en-US kelers are reminded en-US that Florida Wilden-US -en-US life and Conservaen-US -en-US tion Commission en-US regulations require en-US the use of a dive flag to prevent collisions en-US with boats.en-US The Vero Beach Lifeguard Association is en-US a non-profit organization dedicated to proen-US -en-US moting lifeguarding and water safety. Donaen-US-en-US tions are appreciated and will be used to en-US purchase equipment, supplies, and training en-US for lifeguards in Vero Beach. There also is a live feed on their en-US website. They are also on Facebook. It is zip en-US code specific. It might help the writer and en-US readers who are concerned by storm panic. en-US "Florida Storms" is powered by Florida en-US Public Radio Emergency Network. [FPREN] en-US It provides tropics updates, evacuation/trafen-US -en-US fic information, weather, alerts, maps, radar, en-US radio feeds and more.en-USAlgae and Brightlineen-USOur water and wildlife along with our en-US health and that of our children and granden-US -en-US children are in peril with the constant threat en-US of algae. This is man made and could have en-US been avoided. But our politicians are en-US beholden to the sugar farmers. Finally, now en-US that it is gotten to huge proportions, ideas en-US are being sought after but for some its too en-US late. Our businesses who depend on the en-US water and boaters and fisherman will suffer en-US another setback this year because of the en-US algae. en-US Brightline adds another fight. When polen-US -en-US iticians tell me its a "done deal", that just en-US means to me we need to fight back because en-US they have given up. I will not vote for anyen-US -en-US one who does not fight for what is right. en-US Brightline trains travelling 110 mph 32 en-US times a day through our small city where en-US people traverse is a nightmare waiting to en-US happen. Many of our residents are unceren-US -en-US tain how to drive through the roundabout en-US commonly called, CONFUSION CORen-US -en-US NERS (with good reason) already. This is en-US the only access to Martin Memorial and en-US when moments could mean life or death, we en-US do NOT need a train in this area. With the en-US approval of thousands of homes on the west en-US side of the area, perhaps thought should be en-US given to moving the tracks so those moving en-US there would have a direct route to Orlando en-US or Miami. The fisherman again will suffer if en-US this train becomes reality as well as downen-US -en-US town small businesses. If they have enough en-US money to build the train, they have enough en-US to build tracks west of 95 where there will be en-US much less impact. en-US This isn't rocket science. Look for the en-US campaign reports and see who your elected en-US officials and those running for office are en-US beholding to. There you will find a plethora en-US of information and you can vote accordingly en-US for those interested in your welfare instead en-US of those having to pay back others who pay en-US to get them elected.en-USVote to protect quality of lifeen-USPolitical action groups will be backing en-US some local candidates with unlimited funds. en-US These PACs do not care what impact develen-US-en-US opment has on us. They dont care that our tax en-US dollars will be paying for the destruction. en-US They dont care if we have enough emergenen-US -en-US cy personnel. More en-US times than not they have been leaving at en-US least a third in the container and I get the en-US pleasure of packing it back up the drive and en-US in the garage. Nothing stuck, they must go en-US too fast. I was wondering, are the drivers on en-US piece work or afraid of not reaching their en-US quota? At least the open containers were en-US emptied!en-USRoadside memorialsen-USI would like to address road side memorien-US -en-US als. I sympathize with the loss of a family en-US member or friend. But the memorials en-US become larger and are up indefinitely. Type TOURING WITH THE TOWNIES in the subject line.en-USTouring with the Townies en-USjeopardize the countys ability to fund en-US School Resource Officers.en-US Sheriffs Office funding is one area in en-US which Mr. Browns recommendation is less en-US than requested. The sheriff requested a $4.2 en-US million increase, but Mr. Brown recomen-US -en-US mended a $2.5 million increase, or 5.15 peren-US -en-US cent, which he said would be enough to en-US fund seven additional School Resource Offien-US -en-US cers for one year, and other increases the en-US sheriff requested including salary increases.en-US County staffs recommendation should en-US be sufficient to provide 50 percent funding en-US for School Resource Officers included in the en-US budget, Mr. Brown said in his budget mesen-US -en-US sage. Staffs recommendation to fund 50 en-US percent of the School Resource Officer costs en-US is a one year commitment. Based upon the en-US potential impact of Amendment 1 on the FY en-US 19/20 budget, the county cannot commit to en-US funding this expense. The state has not proen-US -en-US vided adequate funding for this new manen-US -en-US date on school districts. The county needs to en-US work with our partners at the Sheriffs en-US Office and School District to request that en-US the legislature fix this funding shortfall.en-US Other budget highlights include an en-US increase to Childrens Services funding of en-US $56,000, or 3.5 percent, to $1,663,965.en-US Due to the pending sale of Vero Beach en-US Electric to Florida Power and Light, there is en-US a reduction in budgeted electricity expenses en-US for county facilities currently served by Vero en-US Beach Electric, with savings of $350,000.en-US The growth in population, as evidenced en-US by building permit activity and new conen-US -en-US struction levels, is a testament to the various en-US amenities that exist in Indian River County, en-US Mr. Brown concluded. The lower cost of en-US living relative to many Florida counties is en-US certainly a factor in many relocation decien-US-en-US sions. Maintaining the small town atmoen-US-en-US sphere, while expanding services and infraen-US -en-US structure to meet the growing population, is en-US a challenge that we must all address as a en-US governmental body. As noted previously, en-US the potential $3 million impact of Amenden-US-en-US ment 1 would add another challenge that en-US must be overcome in the subsequent years en-US budget. The proposed FY 18/19 budget has en-US been developed with an eye toward addressen-US -en-US ing the potential loss of revenue from en-US Amendment 1 in FY 19/20.en-US Extensive budget documents are now en-US available for review on the countys website, en-US including budget requests from Constituen-US-en-US tional Officers Clerk of Circuit Court Jeffrey en-US R. en-US 9 en-USTreasure Coast Food Bank invites the en-US public to a special Food for Thought tour en-US and luncheon at its produce processing en-US plant on Wednesday, July 25. The tour will en-US highlight the future of feeding the Treasure en-US Coast featuring locally sourced, nutritious en-US produce. en-US The produce processing plant enables en-US Treasure Coast Food Bank to significantly en-US increase the amount of fresh, nutritious en-US food for people who are food-insecure. It is en-US the heart of Treasure Coast Food Banks en-US Florida Agriculture and Nourishment Colen-US -en-US laborative, a program that has created jobs en-US and training opportunities, and provided a en-US new market for area farmers. It became fully en-US operational last fall. During summer, the en-US focus is on preparing hundreds of nutritious en-US meals each day for area children fed through en-US Treasure Coast Food Banks Summer Meals en-US program. en-US The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon at en-US the plant, located at 3051 Industrial 25th en-US Street in Fort Pierce, and includes a lunch en-US featuring the same fresh produce and hand-en-US made sandwiches and wraps that are helpen-US -en-US ing the kids in the Summer Meals program en-US eat healthy.en-US The processing plant is the culmination en-US of a long-time goal for us at Treasure Coast en-US Food Bank, and the result is more nutritious en-US food to more people who are food-insecure en-US on the Treasure Coast and throughout en-US South Florida, said President and CEO en-US Judith Cruz. This season, Treasure Coast en-US Food Bank marks its 30th anniversary, and en-US were excited that the future of feeding the en-US Treasure Coast will include fresh local food en-US processed in our plant.en-US The produce processing plant extends the en-US shelf life of produce, thus expanding the en-US number of people who have access to it en-US through two systems a wash/chop/packen-US -en-US aging system to convert whole produce into en-US pre-cut portions, and a cook/vacuum-pack en-US system to convert raw vegetables into ready-en-US to-use products, such as tomato sauce, sauen-US-en-US ted vegetables, or soups.en-US While the processing plants operation en-US fluctuates with the South Florida growing en-US season, the focus always turns to feeding en-US children during summer. Each day, hunen-US -en-US dreds of fresh-made sandwiches and wraps, en-US hand-made salads, and fresh cut fruits and en-US vegetable go out to sites across the Treasure en-US Coast. The meals fill the hunger void for en-US kids who rely on the school cafeteria and en-US whose families dont always have enough to en-US eat.en-US The tour and lunch is free, but registration en-US is required, and space is limited.
