Vero en-US Beach Electric customers are now expected to en-US become FPL customers on Oct. 1, 2018.en-US Vero Beach customers will see many benefits en-US from this acquisition, including lower rates, access en-US to energy efficiency programs, and increased seren-US -en-US vice reliability, said PSC Commissioner Gary F. en-US Clark. This Commission has always used the en-US public interest as the measuring stick for its decien-US -en-US sions, and todays decision will have no adverse en-US impact to existing FPL customers.en-US In late 2017, the Vero Beach City Council en-US approved a $185 million agreement to exit the en-US citys contractual obligations, pay off existing debt, en-US and receive a cash payment. Following the PSA en-US decision, FPL is expected to purchase the Vero en-US Beach utility system for the agreed upon $185 en-US million. en-USState approves FPL takeover en-US of Vero Beach electric system en-USVero Beach en-US woman en-US conned en-US friends for en-US drug money en-USVERO BEACH A Vero Beach en-US woman has been sending Facebook en-US messages asking friends to help pay for en-US her cancer treatment. Trouble is, the en-US sheriff says, she doesnt have cancer.en-US According to Major Eric Flowers of en-US the Indian River County Sheriffs en-US Office, Heather Lynn Grey also told en-US some people that she needed the money en-US to help the sheriffs office with a sting. en-US That wasnt true either.en-US Heather worked at CJ Cannons a en-US couple years ago and was arrested for en-US stealing from them, Maj. Flowers said en-US on June 11. She then violated her proen-US -en-US bation and has been wanted. Today, I en-US learned that she has been telling people en-US that she is working with me to catch a en-US dirty cop and needed money to set en-US them up. The reality is that she used that en-US money to fuel her drug habit. She also en-US told friends and family she has cancer en-US (another lie) to get money for drugs. en-US When we took her into custody this eveen-US -en-US ning, she had loaded needles and other en-US drug paraphernalia. She and her husen-US-en-US band are also now suspects for those en-US scam calls pretending to be me.en-US Sheriff Deryl Loar announced that en-US same day that Ms. Grey had been taken en-US into custody for violations of probation. en-US She is being investigated for the funden-US-en-US raising scams, which Sheriff Loar en-US attributed to a drug problem. en-USSeeen-US en-US FPLen-US page 10en-US Seeen-US en-US MONEYen-US page 4en-USBy Mike Winikoffen-USmwinikoff@hometownnewsol.comen-USBy Mike en-USINDEX Classified 14 Crossword en-US13 Horoscopes en-US11 Out & About 11 Police Report en-US5 Viewpoint en-US6 en-USCOMMUNITY CALENDARen-USSee en-US community en-US events on en-US page 4 en-USTOWNIES 9en-USTouring with the en-US Townies features en-US reader-submitted en-US photos from travels. en-US Lets see how many en-US places we can go! en-USGOING ON A TRIP? The price tag for overweight and obesien-US-en-US ty in America is estimated to range from en-US $147 billion to nearly $210 billion per year en-US in direct and non-direct medical costs, en-US including surgery, medications, counseling, en-US and cost for treating obesity-related complien-US-en-US cations.en-US Effect of a Ketogenic Diet on Advanced en-US Lipid Profilesen-US Twenty patients (BMI >35) were enrolled en-US in the 12 week study with the Ideal Protein en-US Protocol, Effect of a Ketogenic Diet on en-US Advanced Lipid Profiles. The Ideal Protein en-US Protocol also has a positive effect on insulin, en-US insulin resistance, and parameters of metaen-US-en-US bolic syndrome.en-US The study was conducted by Dr. Timothy en-US Logemann, MD, FACC, FACP, of Aspirus en-US Health System, who presented research at en-US the Cleveland Clinics Obesity Conference en-US and National Obesity Conference. en-US Dr. Maria-Elena Kitchell Ed.D, owner of en-US Mind, Body & Sport Weight Loss, agrees en-US with Dr. Logemann that it is gratifying to en-US see that these scientific findings mirror the en-US patient outcomes we see regularly at our en-US clinics with the Ideal Protein Protocol.en-US The results demonstrate that when we en-US address obesity as the root problem instead en-US of just treating the symptoms, there is sigen-US-en-US nificant improvement in markers of cardioen-US -en-US vascular and metabolic health as a result, en-US said Dr. Logemann.en-US Achieve Your Weight Loss Goalsen-US The four phases of the Ideal Protein Proen-US -en-US tocol are designed to help you set, achieve en-US and maintain your weight loss goals.en-US PHASE 1: Achieving 100 percent of your en-US weight loss results through a safe ketogenic en-US diet.en-US PHASE 2: Learning the fundamentals of en-US food and how it impacts your body.en-US PHASE 3: Focusing on developing smarten-US -en-US er eating habits and better lifestyle living!en-US PHASE 4: Maintaining your Ideal Weight en-US and the new you! en-US 4 en-USThe opioid epidemic is very real and en-US Heather Grey is a perfect example of what en-US we have seen in our county, Sheriff Loar en-US said. She has been lying to her friends and en-US family about having cancer to get money for en-US drugs. Since her arrest, we have heard from en-US dozens of people who all heard the same en-US story about needing cash for cancer treaten-US -en-US ments. Fortunately, many of her friends did en-US not send money. We have confirmed en-US approximately five people who did provide en-US money via Facebook and Paypal.en-US One of those friends posted a screenshot en-US she said was an appeal she received on Faceen-US -en-US book from Ms. Grey.en-US Im really sorry to bother you or to even en-US have to try to ask a favor of you. Long story en-US short Im not sure if you saw my post a little en-US bit back but I was diagnosed with Ovarian en-US Cancer, then 3 weeks ago had to have a full en-US hysterectomy ... that and going through a en-US nasty divorce all at the same time. I lost my en-US job when I started on chemo bc it was maken-US-en-US ing me so sick, and I was supposed to have a en-US treatment done today but my moms bank en-US account ended up getting hacked into. Anyen-US -en-US ways I feel horrible asking but I was wonen-US-en-US dering if there was any way you had $75 I en-US can borrow for a few days, I will be able to en-US pay you back just in a really bad spot right en-US now and Im humiliated even having to ask en-US but I dont know what else to do. So if you en-US could help I would appreciate it so very en-US much.en-US Several others replied that they had en-US received the same appeal. One high school en-US friend said I think everyone that went to en-US school with her got the same message.en-US In the comments en-US section of Maj. Flowen-US -en-US ers Facebook post, en-US numerous people en-US said that they had en-US received similar en-US requests from Ms. en-US Grey. Some had en-US given her money, en-US most did not.en-US Ms. Grey was preen-US -en-US viously arrested in en-US Indian River County en-US in Feb., 2016 for proen-US -en-US bation violations, en-US June 2015 for driving with suspended en-US license, giving false information to a pawnen-US -en-US broker, dealing in stolen property, and en-US grand theft, and March 2015 for grand theft, en-US dealing in stolen property, and giving false en-US information to a pawnbroker.en-US The sheriffs office says that Ms. Grey is en-US also considered a person of interest in recent en-US scams where a caller was posing as Maj. en-US Flowers, telling people they had outstanding en-US warrants and demanding payment via gift en-US card.en-US According to information in Ms. Greys en-US booking file at the sheriffs website, her en-US address is in the 1700 block of 20th St. SW, en-US Vero Beach.en-US Ms. Grey remains at the Indian River en-US County Jail without bond for violation of en-US probation warrants. Further drug charges en-US are pending, while investigation continues en-US into her alleged scams. en-US The Indian River County Sheriffs Office en-US is seeking any other victims of Heather en-US Grey. The en-US solution is easy contact your representaen-US -en-US tives about your issues of concern.en-US The current U.S. administration and conen-US-en-US gress needs to answer to us, their constituen-US -en-US ents: that is their job: to represent the peoen-US -en-US ple who elected them. They need to be en-US accountable to us and to make sure that en-US happens, we have to be part of the solution. en-US Environmental and consumer protection en-US issues affect all of us. The Consumer Proen-US-en-US tection Bureau has gone the way of Pruitts en-US Environmental Protection Agency --en-US neglecting or forgetting the most important en-US part of the agencies titles: Protection. They en-US have not been doing their job. en-US We need to tell them (via phone, fax, mail, en-US email or in person) what we expect of them, en-US ask them: Will you be a voice and a force en-US for protection for consumers and for our en-US environment? Will you be holding Town en-US Hall Meetings? If so, when, where? If not, en-US why not? Town Hall Meetings are where en-US representatives actually meet and converse en-US with their constituents. Does your represenen-US-en-US tative do that?en-US13 State Constitution en-US amendmentsen-USThe first two times I saw the amendments en-US published in a local newspaper, I read en-US through the article twice once increduen-US-en-US lously the second more studiously and en-US took notes to try to understand what was en-US being proposed to no avail.en-US The June 15, 2018 edition of the Homeen-US -en-US town News was the third publication Ive en-US seen. There is no understanding or reasonen-US -en-US ing behind these proposals presented as en-US they are, other than to confuse, obfuscate, en-US and trick voters into voting for some things en-US / rules no one wants, and no legislator wants en-US to be blamed for. This is an example of goven-US -en-US ernment at its worst.en-US I STRONGLY urge every voter to vote en-US NO on all 13 items. None of these need to en-US be elevated to the level of incorporation into en-US the states constitution, but should be en-US addressed individually by the legislature, en-US where each elected official must take a puben-US -en-US lic stand for or against each item. Vote en-US NO to the process which only serves to en-US benefit, via power and/or money, to a few, en-US and takes rights / power away from the peoen-US -en-US ple of the state of Florida.en-USWhy set up even en-US more new homes?en-USI find it ironic that the City Council of en-US Sebastian just agreed to increase the Equivaen-US -en-US lent Residential Unit (ERU) for double the en-US current rate without any proven statistics to en-US justify that increase. They claim that the en-US infrastructure needs to be repaired, in the en-US near future, then vote to add 500 new homes en-US to these storm drains they claim need repair.en-US As for the building of new homes in en-US Sebastian I am not aware of any follow up en-US on the inspection or relocation of any en-US Gopher Tortoises in my neighborhood en-US where several new homes have been built. en-US The contractors just came in with their bull en-US dozes and plowed all the foliage and trees en-US down. Now, Sebastian has approved zoning en-US for another 500 new homes. What are they en-US thinking? Drive down most streets in Sebasen-US -en-US tian and you will find many older homes for en-US sale. Some of these homes have been for sale en-US for months and/or years. Drive around and en-US you will see many vacant areas where develen-US -en-US opments were started and left unfinished. en-US We have many empty or nearly empty strip en-US malls and Sebastian is allowing new strip en-US malls be constructed. From my perspective en-US the only ones who benefit from all this en-US needless construction are the construction en-US companies and the City of Sebastian. Maybe en-US it's time for the people we elected to repreen-US -en-US sent us give us a say in what they seem to en-US think is good for our community.en-USUse bats and en-US fish against pestsen-USThe rain has been good for mosquitoes. en-US But our first line of defense should not be en-US poisoning the environment.en-US Make sure there is no standing water in en-US the neighborhoods. Ponds can be stocked en-US with fish (e.g., Gambusia) that eat mosquito en-US eggs and larvae. en-US Put up a bat house. One bat can eat more en-US than 1,000 mosquitoes in one night. Poison en-US should be the last and little used option.en-USSomeone else's life en-US depends on you driving safeen-USDriving in Florida has added to my en-US peeves.en-US Making a stop at a "stop" sign means you en-US stop before the sign then proceed with cauen-USen-UStion.en-US The rod on the left side of the steering en-US wheel is your turn signal. These three and the current en-US and former council are owed a debt of gratien-US -en-US tude for all their hard work and dedication en-US for seeing this transaction through to fruien-US-en-US tion.en-US The PSC directed FPL to charge its new en-US customers the same rates it charges existing en-US customers, which would result in an approxen-US -en-US imately $27 decrease on a typical 1,000 kWh en-US monthly residential bill.en-US On the same day, the PSC voted to slighten-US -en-US ly reduce bills for all FPL customers, approven-US -en-US ing reductions to its capacity and environen-US-en-US mental cost recovery rate components. en-US Starting July 1, those reductions will en-US decrease FPLs monthly bills from $99.87 to en-US $99.37 for a typical 1,000 kWh residential en-US customer bill.en-US FPL says its average bill is about 20 peren-US -en-US cent lower than the City of Vero Beach and en-US about 30 percent lower than the national en-US average.en-US Eight years ago, the City of Vero Beach en-US asked us to consider buying their system in en-US the hopes of reducing the cost of electricity en-US for its residents, said Eric Silagy, president en-US and CEO of FPL. It is by no en-US means legal, and most golf purists frown on en-US the use of such a thing. This past weekend, en-US the United States Golf Association took en-US one, and we should be thankful for it. en-US The U.S. Open was held this past week en-US out on Long Island at Shinnecock Hills Golf en-US Club. In typical USGA fashion, the course en-US was difficult and penal to those who strayed en-US from the fairways, found bunkers or missed en-US the greens. In typical USGA fashion, there en-US were also some ridiculous things done to en-US the course all in the name of protecting en-US par.en-US Saturdays round began rather benignly en-US for those playing early. The breeze was en-US light, the air was cool and there was not a en-US cloud in the sky. Then lunchtime came and en-US it all went to hell.en-US The winds picked up and the course en-US began to dry out. Balls hit down the en-US fairways were getting too much roll and en-US winding up in the rough. And if you know en-US U.S. Open rough, you know what that does en-US to scoring.en-US Worse still, the greens began to dry out en-US and get crusty as some players put it. The en-US grass began to turn brown and putts began en-US to roll and roll and some even rolled off the en-US greens.en-US As the afternoon rolled on, things en-US continued to get worse. In an event where en-US par is considered a good score, just carding en-US a bogey on some holes became the quest. en-US Tony Finau and Daniel Berger started the en-US day 11 shots behind the leaders and were en-US fortunate to have made the cut. The pair en-US each shot 66 and at days end were atop the en-US leaderboard and playing in the final pairing en-US on Sunday.en-US How difficult was the afternoon? Rickie en-US Fowler shot 84. Dustin Johnson, the leader en-US by four shots entering the weekend en-US bogeyed six of his first eight holes. Even en-US Phil Mickelson was not immune to the en-US severity of the playing conditions, putting a en-US moving ball to keep it from rolling off the en-US green. Lefty wound up with a 10 on that en-US hole, and his round of 81 is his worst at the en-US U.S. Open. By days end, the entire field was en-US over par.en-US By design, the U.S. Open is intent on en-USbeing the toughest test in golf, both en-US mentally and physically. The USGA loves to en-US test the mental stability of the field by en-US setting up a course that will make you grind en-US out pars and bogeys, and even make you en-US angry. It has always been a test like no en-US other. en-US Many players complained about some of en-US the pin positions. As the day wore on, you en-US could tell that the USGA had made a mess en-US of a few holes with where the holes were en-US cut. The greens at Shinnecock Hills were en-US designed at a time when no one thought of en-US making them play this hard and roll this en-US fast. en-US After the round however, the USGA did en-US something surprising. They listened and en-US didnt just sit back and laugh at the players en-US struggling to play a game close to golf as we en-US know it come Sunday. Usually this is where en-US they really put the screws to everyone, sit en-US back and toast a glass to the carnage.en-US Instead the USGA watered the course. en-US They watered the greens to keep them from en-US truly becoming browns. The course wasnt en-US allowed to turn into cement. They set pins en-US in places where, if the winds picked up en-US again, you could still hope to keep a putt on en-US the green. They made the course manageen-US -en-US able.en-US Sunday rolled around and the course was en-US still tough, but it was manageable. It bit en-US those who hit loose shots or missed greens en-US and fairways. Thankfully, it rewarded good en-US shots and players had chances to hold en-US greens, make putts and move up the en-US leaderboard instead of waiting for some to en-US fall.en-US It was a great final round. Tommy en-US Fleetwood just missed a birdie at the last en-US that was for a round of 62. No one has ever en-US gone so low at a U.S. Open. Patrick Reed en-US charged up the leaderboard, making five en-US birdies in his first seven holes.en-US In the end we saw history. West Palm en-US Beachs Brooks Koepka became only the en-US seventh player to successfully defend his en-US U.S. Open title. His round of 68 came en-US thanks to a hot putter that saved his several en-US times on the back nine.en-US Lets hope that the USGA has learned en-US something from its mulligan. While we en-US want to see players tested, we dont want the en-US entire thing to fall apart into something not en-US even resembling golf. en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years.
