The events of the past few en-US weeks demonstrate why this is wise.en-US On May 15, The Florida Department of Health en-US in Indian River County issued a rabies alert. The en-US alert runs through mid-July, which may be en-US extended, and includes areas south of State Road en-US 60 (20th St.), north of Oslo Road (9th St. SW), en-US east of 66th Ave., and west of US Highway 1.en-US The alert is in response to an incident that en-US began on May 13, when a county resident worken-US -en-US ing in the yard was attacked by an adult, tricolor en-US (browns), domestic, shorthaired stray cat. The en-US victim, who is not being identified for privacy, en-US defended him/herself with a garden tool. The en-US writer asked why internet services are not en-US offered as a utility at lower cost to users. en-US The answer is very simple. The giant coren-US -en-US porations which control the internet DON'T en-US WANT people to have better service at en-US lower cost, and they spend a lot of the en-US money that they make from their customers en-US PAYING lawmakers to pass laws to keep en-US their profits rolling in.en-US Internet as a utility is blocked or outlawed en-US in TWENTY States, and most of which are en-US controlled by Republican legislatures and en-US Governors, including Florida. These state en-US laws are developed under extreme pressure en-US from the giant telecom corporations, which en-US spend tens of millions of dollars each year to en-US block cheap internet for all. en-US Here is what the website BroadBandNow.en-US com says about Florida: "Florida is a tough en-US place to start a municipal network for two en-US primary reasons: excessive taxes on municien-US -en-US pal broadband projects and extreme vetting en-US requirements that make it difficult for projen-US-en-US ects to get approved. Florida is one of the en-US only states that levies unique, specific ad en-US valorum taxes on municipal providers. en-US Municipal broadband projects are also en-US required to recoup investment within four en-US years, which is virtually impossible for neten-US-en-US works in the infrastructure-starved areas en-US that can benefit from public broadband the en-US most."en-US Also, the Republican-controlled Federal en-US Communications Commission (FCC) en-US under guidance from the new Republican en-US President, recently eliminated the regulaen-US -en-US tions for Net Neutrality which kept costs en-US lower for consumers. These regulations en-US were strongly defended by President Obama en-US during his Presidency but no one underen-US -en-US stood what he was fighting for until it was en-US too late. Now they are gone and costs will en-US keep going up.en-US Republicans in Congress also recently en-US passed a law which allows internet providers en-US to SELL your personal information which en-US they collect WITHOUT your consent, to en-US make even more money, which they can en-US then use to pressure legislators to give them en-US laws that make them even richer at your en-US expense.en-US It is vital that every American understand en-US that their Legislators in their state and their en-US Representatives in Washington MUST be en-US watched very closely and must HEAR what en-US the people WANT them to do. If they do en-US not vote for laws that you WANT, then you en-US must be prepared to vote for someone else en-US who will. Then you must keep a close eye on en-US the PROMISES they make and what they en-US ACTUALLY do when they get into office.en-US A quick footnote: most European counen-US -en-US tries offer government provided internet en-US service, (cable TV, data, 5G cellphone and en-US high-speed internet) for about $40 per en-US month!en-US America is STILL a democracy, but only if en-US We the People WANT to keep it that way!en-USOverdosed on spamen-USIs there someone out there who can tell en-US me how to get rid of spam?en-US I am so sick and tired of delete, delete, en-US delete. It arrives in my spam folder and also en-US in my regular account. The spam messages en-US are mixed in with my friends' messages. en-US Lately, it's not bad enough I get one spam en-US message from a sender, but they come in en-US two or three at a time from the same sender. en-US I can't even ask to be taken off their address en-US list, because there is nowhere to send that en-US request. en-US We all get a certain amount of time here en-US on Earth, and it just amazes me that people en-US can waste that time by being spammers. It's en-US as bad a telemarketers. I just want it gone.en-USAnthony Inswasty/staff photographeren-USMasters Academy class of 2018 Emily Swanson, John Sutter, en-US Emily Prescott, Andrew Milton, and Lauren McNeal stand for the en-US first time as graduates at Sundays commencement ceremony. Vero Beach HS Football en-USThe 2017 Vero Beach Fighting Indians en-US football team is a talented team. They will en-US win many games. However, these are not en-US our boys. Many of the players in key posien-US -en-US tions are there either because they are a en-US coachs son or they have transferred in to en-US play football. And this starts right at the top. en-US These are not kids that we watched en-US mature and hone their skills in IRC Rec en-US league. These are not the players who have en-US earned their spot through excelling on the en-US Freshmen and JV teams over the years. en-US These are kids that have no history in this en-US community. They have no ties to this comen-US -en-US munity in the future. They will play and en-US leave back to Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce, and en-US Sebastian when the year is over. en-US Many of our 3 year players have hung up en-US their cleats this year because of the nepoen-US -en-US tism and favoritism shown with this teams en-US leadership. And dont dare question the sysen-US -en-US tem. If you do your son will be forced off en-US the team one way or another. I could give en-US you several examples of this. I still have a kid en-US in the athletics system so for his sake I keep en-US quiet for now. en-US So if you attend these games be advised en-US these are not the players of old who grew up en-US here, schooled here, and let the hardest en-US working, best man play kids. These are the en-US ones who transferred in to get the best en-US opportunity for themselves and these are en-US the ones lucky enough to have a daddy en-US coaching. There are still a few who are four en-US year players who have earned their spot and en-US not had a Johnny Come Lately come take his en-US spot. I root for those guys. I mourn for the en-US other players who got an opportunity en-US unjustly taken from them.en-USMartin County Golf Courseen-USFor the life of I do not understand why en-US the proposed plan for the new clubhouse en-US includes moving the cart barn from where it en-US it currently located to the lower level of the en-US proposed clubhouse. The current cart storen-US -en-US age structure can not be more than 10 years en-US old. There appears to be nothing wrong with en-US the structure. It works, why throw it away en-US and spend more money? I also don't underen-US -en-US stand the desire for someone to see the road en-US from the driving range. When I use the en-US range, I want some privacy. The range is fine en-US and the practice chipping /sand trap is ok.en-US The size of the clubhouse should be deteren-US -en-US mined by projected use. Will it include a en-US bar? Will it include lockers for the men and en-US women like the original structure? Have it en-US determined by projected/realistic use and en-US with professional help. I have played the en-US course for over 13 years. When I started to en-US play there, it was a gem. it was very difficult en-US to get tee times. en-US 7 en-USproposals that the Post Office is our number en-US one entity that we would like to have remain en-US there, and that they are subject to the conen-US -en-US tract and lease the Post Office has, Mr. en-US OConnor said. That gives the Post Office en-US all the latitude, not the holder of the lease.en-US Mr. OConnor added that the current en-US lease allows the Post Office to exercise a five en-US year option two years from now, or to give en-US one-year notice.en-US Councilmember Tony Young urged the en-US council to recognize the importance of the en-US building to the citys unique nature.en-US The location of that building is a locaen-US -en-US tion that is central to the historic district of en-US downtown Vero Beach, Councilmember en-US Young said. The intent should be to maxien-US -en-US mize the effectiveness of the location, I en-US agree, but my strong sentiments are that it en-US would be inappropriate for us to relinquish en-US control of that building. What I would highen-US -en-US ly recommend is that we look at retaining en-US control. Once we sign an agreement for the en-US sale of the land, its in their ballpark and not en-US ours. I think its a responsibility that we have en-US as a council to protect that area of our town. en-US Its not an extraneous portion of Vero Beach, en-US its central to who we are. The value of that en-US location is significant.en-US Councilmember Laura Moss agreed, sayen-US -en-US ing The neighborhood in which the propen-US -en-US erty is located has entered a time of renewal en-US and reinvigoration. I believe that this propen-US-en-US erty should not be declared surplus at this en-US time. The building does sit in a historically en-US significant section of the city. I would delay en-US declaring it surplus in order to ensure the en-US proper preservation of the unique character en-US of the city, especially given that both the en-US citys Historical Preservation Commission en-US and the Architectural Review Board of the en-US city are charged with preserving the unique en-US character of the city. Both of those are en-US charged with keeping the city unique. I en-US dont think City Council should do less.en-US Mayor Harry Howle countered that the en-US city could get much more for the building en-US now, with the post office still in its lease, en-US than if the city waited and was left trying to en-US sell the property without that lease.en-US Its an old masonry building that needs en-US repair, Mayor Howle said. Its 50-60 years en-US old. We have no control over that lease. The en-US USPS can give us notice at any time that en-US they are leaving. Without that lease that en-US property is worth much much less than en-US whats being offered today.en-US Mr. Howle added that to say the city is en-US losing control, is inaccurate, as he said the en-US city council does not have complete control en-US now, and does not have control of what goes en-US in that space except for zoning parameters.en-US I would say that it would be a missed en-US opportunity not to take advantage of the en-US offers that we have today, instead of winding en-US up with an old building that were responsien-US-en-US ble for, Mayor Howle said.en-US Councilmember Val Zudans agreed with en-US the proponents of the sale. Theres a signifien-US -en-US cant risk if you lose that tenant. Its our fiduen-US -en-US ciary duty to manage the asset of the city en-US properly on behalf of the taxpayers. People en-US forget to think about what is the risk of not en-US doing something.en-US Councilmember Lange Sykes agreed: I en-US am in favor of liquidating this asset which en-US frankly has a lot of risk.en-US During public comment, three residents en-US who spoke strongly opposed the sale. 795 8th Ct. en-US 8 en-USGIFFORD Freddie Woolfork wants en-US children to know that if he can learn to en-US swim at age 66, they can too.en-US The popular director of public relations en-US and facilities operations at Gifford Youth en-US Achievement Center almost drowned when en-US he was 11 years old. Because of that experien-US-en-US ence, Mr. Woolfork has never liked the en-US water. That changed on May 10.en-US They have convinced Freddie to take en-US swimming lessons, so he is going into the en-US pool at 5 p.m. today at the Gifford Aquatic en-US Center, GYAC Marketing Coordinator en-US Christina Tascon excitedly told Hometown en-US News. Its a push to encourage everyone to en-US learn to swim no matter what age.en-US Apart from the fun of swimming, learnen-US -en-US ing to swim opens up a world of recreational en-US opportunities, including boating, water skien-US -en-US ing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Perhaps en-US more importantly, learning to swim reduces en-US the risk of drowning by nearly 90 percent.en-US To help encourage the children of Indian en-US River County to overcome their fear of en-US water, and to show that people of all ages en-US can and should learn to swim, Mr. Woolfork en-US joined instructor Scott Barlow for his first en-US class at the Gifford Aquatic Center. A big en-US part of his motivation was that he had en-US watched the students at GYAC go from en-US being afraid of the water to swimming on a en-US team and loving every minute of it.en-US During his first class, Mr. Woolfork en-US learned the basics of controlling his breathen-US -en-US ing, proper float techniques, and a few paden-US -en-US dle movements. He plans to continue with en-US weekly lessons en-US and wants to en-US learn to swim en-US well enough to en-US share his newen-US -en-US found love of the en-US pool with his en-US family on vacaen-US-en-US tion.en-US Mr. Woolfork en-US said he hopes to en-US encourage everyen-US-en-US one who does en-US not know how to en-US swim to take en-US classes this sumen-US -en-US mer, not only to en-US enjoy the freedom of swimming, but also to en-US ensure they are able to help any young chilen-US -en-US dren or others if they should fall in the water en-US and need assistance.en-US A wide variety of classes for all ages and en-US levels will be held all summer at both North en-US County Aquatic and Gifford Aquatic Cenen-US -en-US ter. The Indian River County Recreation en-US Learn To Swim programs are designed to en-US teach infants, children, teens, and adults of en-US all abilities to swim in a fun, positive, and en-US safe environment. Lessons are offered in en-US group, private, and adaptive settings.en-US The county targets classes to the level of en-US the swimmers, so it helps to review those en-US levels and pick the most appropriate one. en-US When gauging what level class is best for en-US your child, the county suggests starting with en-US a lower level to build confidence. For en-US detailed level descriptions, refer to the Swim en-US Lesson Level Progression Chart at the counen-US -en-US ty recreation website. Free swim evaluations en-US are also available by appointment.en-US The classes follow the Red Cross Learn-en-US to-Swim program, a progression of steps en-US working towards mastering skills from en-US water acclimation to stroke proficiency.en-US Group swimming classes meet four days a en-US week for two weeks, or two days a week for en-US eight weeks from June 4-Aug. 9. Private lesen-US-en-US sons are available year-round. Group swim en-US lessons cost $40 per two-week session. Prien-US -en-US vate swim lessons cost $80 for four 25 minen-US -en-US ute sessions.en-US Group lessons are popular for young en-US swimmers because of the opportunity to en-US practice skills with their peers. Group lesen-US -en-US sons follow the Red Cross guidelines of a 1:6 en-US instructor to student ratio.en-US Private lessons will often allow a student en-US to progress faster. Private lessons are also en-US good for students who are anxious around en-US water.en-US To learn more about swim lessons, and en-US for schedules and fees, visit the Indian River en-US Recreation website at en-US www.ircrec.comen-US. en-US 11 en-USKen Daige said the Vero Beach post en-US office has been in operation at this locaen-US -en-US tion since 1965. Mr. Daige discussed the en-US contributions of the post office lease to en-US the citys budget. This is an asset, not a en-US liability for this city. There is no mortgage en-US due. There is no guarantee that the post en-US office wont be asked to vacate the premisen-US -en-US es once the property is sold and their lease en-US runs out.en-US There is no need to sell off en-US income-generating assets, Mr. Daige said. en-US Most other cities have income-producing en-US assets that offset taxes. This action shows en-US lack of vision and planning for the future en-US of the city.Mr. Daige also challenged the en-US idea that the building was in disrepair. He en-US noted that the post office had just painted en-US and done other repairs, and the building en-US is in good repair, it is not a liability.Mr. en-US Daige recommended that the city retain en-US control of the building and continue to en-US lease to the Post Office.en-US After hearing from two other members en-US of the public who also strongly opposed en-US the sale, focusing on the importance of en-US the building and location to the commuen-US -en-US nity, and the ability of the new property en-US owner to kick the post office out in the en-US future, Mayor Howle moved to approve en-US the resolution to declare the property suren-US -en-US plus. en-US 12 DOH-Indian River is urging anyone who en-USwas recently scratched or bitten by any stray en-US cat, dog, or a wild animal in the alert area to en-US contact them immediately. Rabies is a fatal en-US virus transmitted between mammals via en-US saliva, usually through a bite. It can only be en-US prevented by vaccination and avoidance of en-US animals who may be infected with the virus.en-US To decrease the risk of rabies transmisen-US -en-US sion to people and pets, public health offien-US -en-US cials and Indian River County Animal Conen-US -en-US trol will be trapping stray cats and dogs in en-US the rabies alert area. Pets who are trapped en-US may be quarantined and observed for 45 en-US days at their familys expense, even with en-US proof of vaccination, while unvaccinated en-US animals may be quarantined and observed en-US for 120 days, also at the familys expense.en-US Every year, approximately 50,000 people en-US die from rabies, mostly in Asia and Africa. en-US Thanks to aggressive vaccination camen-US-en-US paigns, post-exposure treatment, and proen-US -en-US active pet ordinances, only two or three en-US people die from rabies in the U.S. annually.en-US The estimated public health costs associen-US-en-US ated with rabies detection, prevention and en-US control exceed $300 million annually in the en-US United States.en-US Retired Vero Beach Animal Control Offien-US -en-US cer Bruce Dangerfield told Hometown en-US News that part of the problem involves peoen-US-en-US ple who let their cats go outside, or those en-US who feed feral cats.en-US People take much better care of their en-US dogs than they do of cats. They just let the en-US cats run wild and loose, Mr. Dangerfield en-US said.en-US Ive got a big issue with those who just en-US spay and neuter the feral cats and then put en-US them back loose in the neighborhoods, en-US which is actually against the law. Theyre en-US doing a good thing in a way by spaying and en-US neutering them so they cant breed anymore, en-US but when the people go around at night and en-US feed them, that attracts the raccoons and en-US possums and foxes and everything else. The en-US raccoon is the leading carrier of rabies of all en-US mammals in North America. The rabid racen-US -en-US coon drinks out of the cats water dish, and if en-US a cat drinks out of that same dish a bit later, en-US he can get rabies. And if the rabies gets in en-US the feral cat population, weve got a super en-US problem.en-US A cat is an inside animal. Cats shouldnt en-US be outside. An inside cat has 20 years, and en-US outside cat is lucky to live three or four en-US years.en-US The Humane Society of Vero Beach and en-US Indian River County is urging everyone, en-US even those who normally allow their cat en-US outside, to keep them inside during this en-US alert period, or to at least keep them closely en-US monitored when outside. This applies to en-US dogs when they are outside as well, as rabid en-US wildlife can easily get inside a fenced yard en-US and come into contact with your dog.en-US HSVB also advises that people do not en-US handle, feed or pet unknown animals, and en-US do not leave pet food outside for stray anien-US -en-US mals. Pet food left outdoors can attract a en-US variety of animals and cause dangerous conen-US -en-US flicts between pets and wildlife.en-US The Dept. of Health is warning residents en-US to be aware that rabies is present in our wild en-US animal population, and that dogs and cats en-US who are not vaccinated are most at risk. en-US They also warn that people outside the alert en-US area should not feel a false sense of security, en-US as animals can obviously wander past any of en-US the alert areas boundaries.en-US We strongly advise residents not to en-US approach or feed wild and stray animals, en-US and keep their pets vaccinated, said Miranen-US -en-US da Hawker, Indian River County Health en-US Officer.en-US The Health Dept. added that all wildlife en-US contact should be avoided, particularly racen-US-en-US coons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats, en-US and coyotes.en-US Any mammal can get rabies. Rabies in en-US raccoons is considered endemic throughout en-US Florida. Raccoons, foxes, and bats represent en-US the greatest number of rabies cases in Florien-US-en-US da wildlife. Among domestic animals, rabid en-US cats outnumber any other domestic species.en-US Local and state agencies are also advising en-US people to teach children never to handle en-US unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, even en-US if they appear friendly. Prevent bats from en-US entering living quarters or occupied spaces en-US in homes, churches, schools and other simien-US -en-US lar areas, where they might come in contact en-US with people and pets. Spay or neuter your en-US pets to help reduce the number of unwanted en-US pets that may not be properly cared for or en-US regularly vaccinated.en-US Anyone who has been bitten or scratched en-US in the last two weeks by an outdoor cat, wild en-US animal or dog in the rabies alert area should en-US contact the Indian River County Health en-US Department immediately at (772) 794-7440. en-US Incidents should also be immediately en-US reported to Indian River County Animal en-US Control at (772) 226-3486 or Vero Beach en-US Animal Control at (772) 978-4600.en-US The humane society, Health Department en-US and Animal Control can provide educationen-US -en-US al materials and programs. Golf Channel has tried en-US many shows to capture the interest en-US of fans beyond just watching tournament en-US golf and lessons. Not all have been quite to en-US successful. The latest endeavor is Shoten-US -en-US makers, sponsored by Top Golf. en-US The show was filmed over a very cold en-US weekend at Top Golf in Las Vegas. The en-US nearest Top Golf to us in in Orlando, on en-US Universal Boulevard. The idea behind Top en-US Golf is to provide an entertainment en-US atmosphere where golfers hit from climate en-US controlled bays at targets on the range. en-US Points are given for targets hit and the en-US winner is the one with the highest score. en-US Think bowling, but for golf.en-US Back to the show. Shotmakers is a new en-US competition where precision shot-making en-US meets strategy in a blend of golf, technology en-US and entertainment. Teams consisted of two en-US golfers, one male, one female. en-US Most of the players for the series were en-US scratch golfers and players looking to get en-US onto a tour to compete professionally. Many en-US have played on mini-tours or in other Golf en-US Channel competitions. en-US I was intrigued and watched mainly en-US because Maurice Allen, one of the competien-US -en-US tors, is someone that I have met at a few en-US golf events. He is a 3-time World Long en-US Drive Champion and holds the record for en-US longest drive with a 3-wood.en-US The show has potential, but most fans en-US did not care for the show. Like too many en-US golf reality shows, the players just arent en-US that good. They can play better than you en-US and I, but watching them fold under a little en-US pressure or spend more time talking about en-US how good they are than backing it up, en-US wears thin very quickly.en-US I cannot tell you how many times I en-US watched the guys try to hit an 8-iron 175 en-US yards, only to come up short. If you are en-US truly this stubborn and your ego this large, en-US I can see why you are competing on a en-US television show, not a tour.en-US The highest points could be scored by en-US hitting a long drive into the net at the end en-US of the range and many players chose that en-US shot. Sadly, too often they missed the en-US 50-yard wide target that was only a little en-US over 200 yards away. en-US If the show should return for a second en-US season, Id love to see some changes to liven en-US things up. In most of the competitions, the en-US players got to pick what target they would en-US hit to and, in every instance, choose which en-US club to use. I want to change that.en-US You want the show to be about Shoten-US -en-US makers, then lets make it that. I want to see en-US a spinning wheel with the targets laid out en-US on them and another with 13-clubs. Let the en-US player spin the wheel to see what target he en-US or she must hit to. Then spin the other to en-US see what club must be used.en-US To mix it up, allow the players to pick one en-US or the other. They can choose a club, but en-US must then spin to get the target or vise-veren-US -en-US sa. I want to see you making a shot. Lets see en-US you hit a target 100 yards away with a en-US 3-iron, or hooding a 9-iron to make it go en-US 200 yards.en-US Another twist would be when the teams en-US are playing head-to-head, to allow one team en-US to force the other to either re-spin or even en-US select their target for them. Lets say Team 1 en-US spun and gets to hit a wedge to the closest en-US target. Their competitors use their chance en-US to force them to either hit a different club at en-US that target or pick a different one.en-US I want to see shot making! I was always en-US intrigued to watch Seve Ballesteros hit en-US amazing shots with clubs no one else would en-US have thought of. Those are the shots I want en-US to see and that I think may keep viewers en-US interested.en-US The show is likely coming back for a en-US second season as there is a place on the en-US Golf Channel website to apply to be a future en-US contestant. Heres hoping they switch a few en-US things up, or I will probably find another en-USshow to watch those evenings. en-USCorrectionen-USA couple weeks ago, I misquoted Mark en-US Boyd, General Manager of St Lucie Trail. en-US His quote in my story on the new owners of en-US the course should have stated: If the en-US clubhouse was paid a little more attention en-US (by the previous owner), everyone would en-US have been thrilled.en-US I mistakenly used the word course en-US instead of clubhouse. Boyds plans are to en-US take better advantage of the clubhouse than en-US the previous owners did. The course, he en-US stated, was kept in fantastic shape.
