en-US 3 en-USVERO BEACH sDr. Keith J. Kalish has en-US been providing foot care in Indian River en-US County since 1987. The recent winner of en-US Hometown News Readers Choice Award en-US offers a well-rounded podiatric practice en-US with surgical and nonsurgical options and en-US can treat just about any foot or ankle proben-US-en-US lem that comes through the door.en-US People live with foot pain and dont realen-US -en-US ize that in many instances there are simple en-US solutions to taking care of their foot proben-US-en-US lems, Dr. Kalish told Hometown News. en-US Foot doctors see only about three percent en-US of the population that are having pain with en-US their feet. Most people arent aware that our en-US services are so effective.en-US Dr. Kalish treats almost any foot condien-US -en-US tion you can think of, including Achilles en-US tendon injuries, ankle instability and en-US sprains, problems from diabetes and arthrien-US-en-US tis, bunions, calluses, corns, flat feet, fungus en-US toenails, geriatric foot care, heel spurs, en-US ingrown toenails, warts, and plantar fascien-US-en-US itis.en-US Dr. Kalish also offers peripheral vascular en-US testing, digital X-rays, and 3D scanning en-US technology.en-US We see a lot of diabetics on a routine en-US schedule, Dr. Kalish said. Diabetes is a lifeen-US -en-US time condition, and if we can keep them en-US from having foot problems, thats much easen-US -en-US ier than taking care of a problem thats been en-US going on for a long time.en-US Diabetics often have problems with blood en-US flow and numbness in their feet. That can en-US lead to frequent en-US infections or ulceren-US -en-US ations. Many diaen-US-en-US betics get into the en-US dangerous mindset en-US of expecting foot en-US pain and seeing it en-US as normal, so they en-US dont treat it.en-US In some en-US instances it can en-US lead to problems en-US with bone infecen-US-en-US tion, and that sets en-US them up for losing a toe. If a diabetic loses a en-US toe, the chances of losing other toes or even en-US a foot or a leg go up significantly. So just by en-US seeing diabetics on a routine schedule, we en-US can do preventative maintenance and evaluen-US-en-US ate their circulation and nerve function. In en-US some instances we can put them in a special en-US diabetic shoe to protect their feet and preen-US -en-US vent problems from arising. If a diabetic en-US keeps their glucose well controlled and preen-US -en-US vents these problems from arising, they can en-US go a whole lifetime without having any en-US problems with their feet. Thats what were en-US trying to do, provide that preventative podien-US -en-US atric care to keep people out of trouble.en-US Some people come directly to Dr. Kalish en-US without a referral. Others are referred by en-US primary care physicians or endocrinoloen-US-en-US gists.en-US Dr. Kalish is a Board Certified Medical en-US and Surgical Foot Specialist with over 30 en-US years experience. Dr. Kalish is a member of en-US the American Podiatric Medical Associaen-US -en-US tion and Florida Podiatric Medical Associaen-US -en-US tion. He is affiliated with local hospitals en-US including the Indian River Medical Center. en-US Dr. Kalish has been a part-time supervising en-US faculty member for the Florida State Unien-US -en-US versity College of Medicine since 2008.en-US Most services can be performed in the en-US office on an out-patient setting.en-US Its been very gratifying over the years to en-US find there are a lot of small, simple proceen-US -en-US dures we can perform for people who may en-US have been going to a wound center or other en-US facility with a wound thats difficult to heal. en-US In some instances there are simple, straighten-US -en-US forward outpatient procedures we can do en-US that get rid of bone problems that had been en-US causing the wound, and then it can heal very en-US quickly. Some of our patients had been en-US going to a wound center or getting home en-US health care for weeks or months or even en-US years, and we can do a small procedure that en-US gets them healed in a very short period of en-US time in some instances. Those have been en-US especially gratifying procedures to do, if we en-US can get a wound to heal that has been there en-US for years. We like to focus on going after en-US what causes the problem in the first place.en-US Recently Dr. Kalish has been treating a lot en-US of patients with a synthetic cartilage implant en-US called Cartiva.en-US The Cartiva implant is like a jelly bean en-US that gets put inside the joint. If somebody en-US has pain when they move their big toe up en-US and down, its often from arthritis and bone en-US spurring around the joint. In the past, there en-US havent been the greatest treatments for that. en-US When I did my residency, we used a lot of en-US traditional implants, but they dont hold up en-US that well. Another alternative is just fusing en-US the joint, and that gets rid of the arthritic en-US pain but you have a stiff toe after that type of en-USprocedure.en-US The Cartiva implant is a small silien-US -en-US cone-type material thats put in the joint and en-US stays in place very nicely. Weve been getting en-US great results with it and we havent seen it en-US breaking down as can happen with other en-US implants. It really is a nice additional tool we en-US have for a difficult problem.en-US Some younger folks dont want to have a en-US stiff joint after surgery, and this is an alteren-US -en-US native that maintains the motion in the joint en-US but gets rid of the pain.en-US Another advantage to the Cartiva en-US implant is if down the road you need to fuse en-US a joint, you can still do it. In the past, with en-US implants you had to remove quite a bit of en-US bone, so that wasnt an option later because en-US there was too much bone loss. With this you en-US still maintain the option to have a fusion en-US down the road.en-US Most important, Dr. Kalish says, is to not en-US ignore problems.en-US You shouldnt have pain. Pain is usually a en-US warning sign that something needs to be en-US looked at and taken care of. If you have pain, en-US give us a call. We can usually fit people in en-US pretty quickly. Were very efficient.en-US Office hours are Monday through Friday, en-US 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Appointments can be en-US scheduled through the website or by phone.en-US The office of Dr. Keith J. They get en-US into their car and drive in a severely en-US impaired state and kill someone. The real en-US culprit certainly cannot be the poor person en-US that now has to live with this on their conen-US -en-US science. It is, instead, the bartender that en-US served him too many drinks.. en-US We saw the McDonalds fiasco with the en-US coffee which the lady spilled on herself. I en-US believe the award she received was over $80 en-US million. McDonalds then had to insert a en-US notation on their coffee cups that the conen-US -en-US tents were hot since the public cannot be en-US expected to know this without fair warning. en-US Sounds right to me.en-US In recent months we have seen a couple of en-US cases much closer to home. We have had en-US two incidents where people were struck and en-US killed by a Brightline train. These were ceren-US -en-US tainly tragic events and I extend my condoen-US -en-US lences to the friends and families of the vicen-US-en-US tims. However, the initial gut reaction en-US disseminated by many was to go after en-US Brightline. The very thought that Brightline en-US is to blame for individuals knowingly standen-US -en-US ing on the tracks or walking/bicycling in en-US front of a train is a classic example of how en-US far weve gone to make certain the truth, en-US common sense or simply what is right is no en-US longer the reaction of our societal mores. If en-US the gates are down across an intersection, en-US the crossing alarms are operating and the en-US train is blowing its air horn, I see no way en-US how we can deflect blame onto the train. en-US One cannot legislate stupidity. To be fair, it en-US is possible that the victims may have had en-US mental or physical situations which preventen-US-en-US ed them from realizing what they were en-US doing. If so, then how does the family allow en-US a loved one with said conditions to have the en-US freedom to put themselves into such situaen-US -en-US tions? en-US 9 en-USTALLAHASEE In March, Gov. Rick en-US Scott signed legislation that lets the state en-US join the Electronic Registration Information en-US Center. Florida is the 24th state to join en-US ERIC, a multistate effort to expand voter en-US registration and remove or update incorrect en-US registrations.en-US ERIC was formed in 2012 as a non-profit en-US organization with seed money from The en-US Pew Charitable Trust. It is a system to comen-US-en-US pare state and federal government data on en-US eligible voters. Data compared includes en-US voter and motor vehicle registrations, U.S. en-US Postal Service addresses, and Social Security en-US death records. en-US Every year, millions of Americans move, en-US die, or have other life changes that affect en-US voter status. ERIC checks that voters are elien-US-en-US gible and registered only once, in the proper en-US place. The ERIC website claims that one in en-US eight voter registration records nationwide en-US contain a serious error, and 51 million eligien-US -en-US ble citizens remain unregistered to vote.en-US Keeping voter rolls current is always a en-US challenge because voters move and neglect en-US to notify the Elections Office, said Indian en-US River Countys Supervisor of Elections Lesen-US -en-US lie Swan. ERIC is another tool to ensure the en-US countys voter rolls are as accurate as possien-US -en-US ble.en-US Since 2013, ERIC has identified 8,428,614 en-US voter registration mistakes. These included en-US 1,826,974 people who moved to different en-US states but didnt cancel their prior registraen-US -en-US tions, 6,250,150 who were registered in the en-US proper state but required updates to their en-US records, 145,117 in-state duplicates, and en-US 206,373 people who had died.en-US ERIC has not released any data indicating en-US whether improper votes were actually cast.en-US In addition to comparing data to find en-US mistakes, ERIC is a tool for states to contact en-US unregistered voters. Member states contact en-US eligible unregistered voters at least every en-US two years, prior to federal general elections, en-US with instructions on how to register.en-US Each state submits, at a minimum, voter en-US registration and motor vehicle data, includen-US-en-US ing name, address, date of birth, and the last en-US four digits of the social security number. en-US Date of birth and the last four digits of the en-US Social Security number are supposedly proen-US-en-US tected using a cryptographic one-way hash en-US before being transmitted to ERIC. en-US Each state then receives reports that show en-US voters who have moved within their state, en-US voters who have moved out of state, voters en-US who have died, duplicate registrations, and en-US eligible individuals who are not registered.en-US In Florida, as in other states, the effort to en-US join ERIC appears to have been bipartisan, en-US with support from both Democrats and en-US Republicans. While not formal opposition, en-US some concerns have been raised by civil liben-US -en-US erties organizations regarding the potential en-US for the system to either remove eligible voten-US -en-US ers from the rolls, or to compile data that en-US might be used for unintended purposes.en-US ERIC is owned and managed by the states en-US that choose to join. Each state pays annual en-US dues. The organization has an annual buden-US -en-US get of $785,000, with larger states paying en-US proportionally more than smaller states. en-US The organization says that states actually en-US save more money than their dues from en-US cleaner voter rolls resulting in less returned en-US mail, fewer provisional ballots on election en-US day, and shorter lines at polling places.en-US The seven states that formed ERIC in en-US 2012 are Colorado, Delaware, Maryland, en-US Nevada, Utah, Virginia, and Washington. en-US Washington D.C., Oregon, Connecticut, en-US Louisiana, and Minnesota joined in 2014. en-US Alabama, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Rhode en-US Island joined in 2015. Alaska, Ohio, New en-US Mexico, West Virginia and Wisconsin en-US joined in 2016. Arizona joined in 2017, and en-US Missouri in 2018. en-US Florida now becomes the 24th member en-US state, though the system will not actually be en-US used in Florida until Jan. 1, 2019, after the en-US 2018 midterms.en-US This is important progress, said Dana en-US Southerland, President of the Florida State en-US Association of Supervisors of Elections. en-US Our participation in ERIC means we will en-US be able to identify and communicate with en-US voters who may be registered to vote in en-US other states. It will also help us identify eligien-US-en-US ble, unregistered voters so we can encourage en-US them to register to vote.en-US Our association advocated for this legisen-US-en-US lation because weve seen credible evidence en-US that ERIC is a secure way to share data and en-US improve the accuracy of our voter registraen-US -en-US tion database, said Craig Latimer, legislaen-US -en-US tive chair for FSASE. We look forward to en-US working with ERIC partners in a shared en-US commitment to improve Americas voter en-US rolls and bolster the countrys confidence in en-US our elections.en-US For more information relating to Indian en-US River County, contact the Supervisor of Elecen-US-en-US tions office at (772) 226-3440, or visit en-US www.en-US AREA'S BEST BUSINESS REVIEW Presented by: Metro News All Rights Reserved. 1-918-234-7768Spending more and buying less? When this en-US years awards are distributed, we will have en-US donated more than $3.7 million dollars to en-US nonprofits in Indian River County over the en-US last nine years.en-US Equally important, the partnerships en-US weve developed with these community en-US organizations have not only positively en-US impacted the lives of thousands of local resien-US -en-US dents, but also given our members the en-US opportunity to grow and learn in many en-US ways.en-US In addition to Impact 100, funding for the en-US Early Bird program is provided by Johns en-US Island Foundation, Johns Island Service en-US League, The Prentice Foundation, Indian en-US River Club Head, Heart and Hands, Grand en-US Harbor Community Outreach, United Way, en-US and Indian River County Childrens Services en-US Advisory Committee.en-US EOCs other programs include REACH en-US Family Self-Sufficiency, Low Income Home en-US Energy Assistance, and Emergency Assisen-US-en-US tance.en-US Parents or guardians who are interested en-US in enrolling children in Early Bird should en-US contact EOC/Head Start at (772) 589-8008.en-US The Economic Opportunities Council is en-US located at 2455 St. Lucie Avenue, Vero Beach. en-US For more information or to make a donation, en-US call (772) 562-4177 or visiten-US www.eocofirc.en-US net.en-US For more information about Impact 100, en-US visit en-US time that HUMTC members in three Treaen-US-en-US sure Coast counties are working on the en-US same issue at the same time, said founder en-US Joe Beck.en-US At the very least, school boards are en-US bound by the Greece, New York case that en-US requires legislative bodies to offer secular en-US and minor religious groups the same opporen-US -en-US tunity to deliver invocations as they offer to en-US traditional religious leaders, said Mr. Beck. en-US The courts have held that School Boards en-US are part of the school system and therefore en-US cannot offer prayers. This issue is now being en-US litigated in various circuit courts throughen-US -en-US out the country.en-US HUMTC supports Humanists providing en-US secular invocations at legislative and school en-US board meetings. Phil Katrovitz has provided en-US secular invocations at Indian River County en-US School Board meetings.en-US In a closely related issue in Brevard Counen-US -en-US ty that will affect Indian River County, on en-US April 24 the American Humanist Associaen-US -en-US tion filed a brief with the U.S. Court of en-US Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in support en-US of a lower court ruling that declared that en-US excluding atheists and Humanists from legen-US -en-US islative invocation practices violates both en-US the U.S. and Florida Constitutions. en-US In October, 2017, the U.S. District Court en-US for the Middle District of Florida ruled that en-US the Brevard County Floridas Board of en-US County Commissioners invocation policy en-US showed favoritism for certain faiths in direct en-US violation of the Establishment Clause of the en-US U.S. Constitution. The AHA is arguing that en-US the District Courts decision should be en-US upheld.en-US Reversal of this sound ruling would conen-US -en-US travene decades of binding First Amenden-US-en-US ment precedent holding that the governen-US -en-US ment cannot prefer some religions over en-US others, and religion over nonreligion, said en-US Monica Miller, Senior Counsel of the AHAs en-US Legal Center. en-US 11 en-USVERO BEACH On April 4, The Learnen-US -en-US ing Alliance held its annual gala at the Vero en-US Beach Museum of Art. The focus was to en-US promote The Moonshot Moment, an effort en-US begun in 2010 to elevate literacy in the en-US School District of Indian River County to 90 en-US percent by third grade.en-US The theme of the evening was how stories en-US shape lives. Learning Alliance Chairman en-US Ray Oglethorpe shared his story of how en-US education changed the direction of his life. en-US Instead of farming, working in the coal en-US mines or playing the accordion at the local en-US VFW Hall, the former president of America en-US Online was able to set his sights elsewhere.en-US Education gave me everything, Mr. en-US Oglethorpe said. It made me who I am. en-US Thats why Im so passionate about making en-US every child succeed in this world.en-US When the Moonshot Moment project en-US began, only 35 percent of the nations en-US third-graders were reading proficiently. Mr. en-US Oglethorpe, along with Learning Alliance en-US co-founders Barbara Hammond and Liz en-US Woody-Remington, formed a grassroots liten-US -en-US eracy initiative and partnered with the en-US School District of Indian River County to en-US pursue the goal of having 90 percent of en-US third-graders reading at grade level by 2018.en-US Ms. Hammond and Ms. Woody-Remingen-US-en-US ton concluded that student achievement was en-US being stymied by limited resources and a en-US lack of professional development opportuen-US-en-US nities for educators.en-US Eight years ago we started this journey, en-US and 2018 was our mission destination, said en-US Ms. Hammond. We had big dreams. We en-US discovered that to create transformational en-US change, we needed to do it as a community.en-US The Learning Alliance has worked to en-US close the student achievement poverty gap en-US while providing extended learning time en-US through after-school and summer proen-US-en-US grams, and crucial professional developen-US -en-US ment to teachers.en-US Speakers at the gala highlighted Indian en-US River Academy as a model, where 95 peren-US -en-US cent of the students live at or below poverty en-US level, and the school was the worst performen-US -en-US er in the district. At the end of the current en-US school year, scores are expected to show 77 en-US percent literacy achievement, which is douen-US-en-US ble that of the schools test score history. en-US For the first time in a long, long while we en-US have no F-rated schools in the school disen-US -en-US trict, said Mr. Oglethorpe. We have the en-US highest literacy scores ever in the history of en-US the district; six schools improved their letter en-US grades, and two former F schools became en-US C+ and Dschools. en-US According to The Learning Alliance, the en-US School District of Indian River County is en-US one of the poorest in the state, with 68 peren-US -en-US cent of third-graders receiving free and en-US reduced lunch. Students who attended The en-US Learning Alliances afterschool and summer en-US Moonshot Academies showed literacy gains en-US of 57 percent compared to non-Moonshot en-US Academy students. en-US We are really onto something here in en-US Vero Beach. This story is real, is continuing en-US to grow, and Indian River County has en-US become a model for this nation, said Mr. en-US Oglethorpe. If we can get our kids feeling en-US safe, secure and ready to learn, fantastic en-US results can come about. Its not a question of en-US kids cant; its a question that kids can if we en-US give them the right supen-US-en-US port, help and guidance to en-US do this. en-US According to Ms. en-US Woody-Remington, en-US access to professional en-US development opportunien-US-en-US ties for educators has en-US played a significant role in en-US gains made during the en-US past eight years. It has en-US been an honor and a privien-US-en-US lege to work with these en-US teachers. They have an en-US unprecedented talent and en-US have participated in proen-US -en-US fessional development en-US that has been transformaen-US-en-US tive. It is because of the en-US partnership between The en-US Learning Alliance, the disen-US-en-US trict and the schools that en-US we have been able to come en-US together and really create en-US change and innovation.en-US Tyler Ginn, a 14-year-en-US old Freshman Learning en-US Center student, told the en-US gala audience that when en-US he was in the third grade, en-US trying to read was like en-US trying to learn something that makes no en-US sense. As a struggling reader he felt alone, en-US but after participating in a pilot program en-US offered by The Learning Alliance, Tyler said en-US I could finally understand what I was readen-US -en-US ing. I wasnt afraid to go to school anymore. en-US It felt like I actually finally fit in.en-US His mother Shelby Ginn added without en-USthe extra help that Tyler received from The en-US Learning Alliance, I dont know where we en-US would be today. I credit The Learning Allien-US-en-US ance in saving my sons life.en-US In 2010 The Learning Alliance set the en-US Moonshot goal, and even though we didnt en-US quite make the goal, weve had a lot of sucen-US -en-US cesses, said Mr. Oglethorpe.en-US For more information about The Learning en-US Alliance, visit en-US en-US or call (877) 548-READ (7323). Its all about the food. I want a burrito, en-US fajitas, nachos, enchiladas, guacamole, en-US chimichangas, black beans and red beans, en-US now! Oops, dont forget the Margaritas. en-US The most popular ethnic cuisine in en-US America is Mexican. Nachos have replaced en-US chips as a snack, and salsa has pushed en-US ketchup out of its number one condiment en-US spot. en-US Yes, Hispanic food is going wild in the en-US U.S., bringing the heat to food everywhere. en-US Spicy pepper-infused flavors are a hot trend en-US and will continue for years to come. en-US Chili-infused beer is now on the market en-US with a blend of habaneros, jalapenos, en-US serrano and Anaheim peppers. The en-US Hispanic culture is putting flavor and zing en-US in foods.en-US Remember, the heat is in the membrane en-US and seed of the pepper and not in the meat. en-US Try it. Take a jalapeno pepper and just cut en-US the outer green skin off leaving no white or en-US seed and taste it raw. It will taste like green en-US pepper with almost no heat. en-US Another tip when eating Hispanic food is en-US to eat the rice and beans together. The organization purchased the en-US club more than two decades ago when it en-US opened the PGA Village just on the other en-US side of I-95.en-US When it first opened in the late 1980s the en-US course was the jewel of St. Lucie County. en-US Over the years it has gone through every en-US step of being cared for from neglect to en-US pampering. One thing the course never lost en-US was its variety. The course remains a lot of en-US fun to play with a solid mix of holes that en-US challenge you to hit every club in your bag.en-US The new owner is CGI St. Lucie, the en-US same group that owns The Evergreen Club en-US in Palm City. Having played Evergreen and en-US witnessed the great conditions that course en-US is always in, I am quite excited for St. Lucie en-US Trail. Apparently the community is as well, en-US with over 100 new members joining just in en-US the few weeks since the course sold.en-US Were excited to be here, said General en-US Manager, Matt Boyd. We love the layout en-US and the design. We will do everything we en-US can to promote golf here.en-US The new owners plan to address some of en-US the drainage issues the course experiences en-US when those summer thunderstorms move en-US through. They are also listening to the en-US community to see what the members and en-US customers want.en-US If the course was paid a little more attenen-US -en-US tion (by the previous owner), everyone en-US would have been thrilled, said Boyd. We en-US are giving it that attention.en-US A benefit of purchasing the course at this en-US time of year is that business tends to be a en-US little slow. This gives the new owners a en-US chance to address the issues and get the en-US course primed and ready for season.en-US One thing the membership was missing en-US was the country club atmosphere. The club en-US has a beautiful clubhouse that wasnt being en-US used to its potential. The dining room saw en-US over 200 people show up for a dinner shorten-US -en-US ly after the purchase. The pool and tennis en-US courts were also included in the purchase en-US and the green clay courts may be the en-US best-kept secret in the area. However, CGI en-US purchased the club because it loves the golf en-US course.en-US The course has five sets of tees and plays en-US anywhere from just over 5,000 yards long to en-US just over 6,900. The par-4 third hole, at 458 en-US yards from the tips, may just be the longest en-US par-4 in the area. en-US In the 2013 the PGA of America en-US renovated the club. Dick Gray was brought en-US in to focus on getting the course up to its en-US tough standards. The focus was on the en-US playable en-US areas. en-US Getting the en-US course en-US cleaned up en-US and looking en-US good from en-US tee to green en-US was first and en-US foremost. It en-US took a while, en-US but the en-US greens were en-US rebuilt and en-US re-grassed. en-US With a few en-US years of en-US growth in en-US them now, en-US they are about perfect.en-US One recent trend in course renovation is en-US where the areas around the perimeter of the en-US holes are cleaned up and thinned out. Not en-US having thick clumps of palmettos to gobble en-US up slightly errant shots serves a trio of en-US purposes. First, it speeds up play and, en-US second, it makes for a less frustrating round en-US for the average golfer. Thirdly, it creates en-US more airflow across the fairways and greens en-US and allows the course to breathe.en-US If you played here years ago, you will en-US surely remember the palmettos that en-US gobbled up almost every wayward shot. en-US Most of these are gone or well-trimmed. en-US Fairways are wider, and the greens a bit en-US larger. The tall grasses in the wetlands have en-US been cut to a proper height. en-US Now to see what other improvements en-US CGI makes over the coming months. I have en-US a feeling this club is back and ready to en-US re-take its place as a jewel on the Treasure en-US Coast.en-US For more information on the club, en-US memberships and tee times, visit en-US www.en-US en-US or call the pro shop at (772) en-US 340-1444.en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years.
