en-US 3 en-USVERO BEACH The first Indian River en-US STEAM Fest is coming to Vero Beach Saturen-US -en-US day, April 14, at the Intergenerational (iG) en-US Recreation Center.en-US The family-friendly STEAM Fest starts en-US with the traditional STEM subject areas en-US science, technology, engineering, and math en-US and adds art.en-US The Rhode Island School of Design en-US started a campaign that says the creative, en-US innovative parts of learning had to be added en-US to STEM to get it right, Kelly Brown, a volen-US -en-US unteer with Vero Beach Academy and one en-US of the organizers of the event, told Homeen-US -en-US town News. They started pushing for the en-US concept of STEAM instead of STEM. When en-US we were planning this festival, we agreed art en-US should be a part of it.en-US STEAM proponents argue that while en-US innovation remains tightly coupled with en-US STEM subjects, art and design will be equalen-US -en-US ly important in the 21st century. They en-US encourage integration of art and design in en-US all levels of education, and seek to influence en-US employers to hire artists and designers to en-US drive innovation.en-US The Indian River STEAM Fest has adopten-US-en-US ed that goal by integrating art with the en-US STEM subjects in many of the presentations en-US at the festival.en-US We partnered with a lot of the art teachen-US -en-US ers in the school district, said Ms. Brown. en-US They loved being included, and they are en-US spearheading the art section of the event.en-US The broader goal is to get children en-US involved in an interactive, hands-on way en-US with each of the STEAM subjects. Over 50 en-US exhibitors indoors and outside and numeren-US -en-US ous sessions throughout the day will en-US encourage children to explore jobs in those en-US fields.en-US Were going to have projects where scien-US -en-US ence, technology, engineering, and math en-US concepts weave into the art itself, so its not en-US just art for arts sake, but emphasizing STEM en-US areas, said Ms. Brown. We would like to en-US expose children to those important fields, en-US because thats where jobs are really growen-US -en-US ing.en-US There are not enough people to fill those en-US jobs, and theres an obvious disparity with en-US girls and people of color in those fields. en-US Bringing those ideas and possibilities to kids en-US will hopefully nurture a desire to have jobs en-US in those fields.en-US Exhibitors were asked to try to make en-US everything hands-on.en-US We wanted to make sure kids can engage en-US at every booth, not just pick up paperwork. en-US We worked really hard with the exhibitors to en-US make sure everything is interactive. For en-US many of the kids, it will be the first time they en-US can engage with these fields hands-on.en-US Weve got enough variety of activities en-US that it will be fun for kindergarten kids en-US through high school. You can learn things en-US from these booths at any age. For example, en-US engaging with the robotics team will be fun en-US and educational for all ages.en-US A proclamation passed by the Indian en-US River County Commissioners designated en-US April 14 as Indian River STEAM Fest Day. en-US That proclamation states that 2.4 million en-US STEM jobs are projected to go unfilled in en-US 2018. Students can advance their prospects en-US in those fields by learning five critical skills en-US through the arts: creativity, collaboration, en-US confidence, cultural awareness and empaen-US -en-US thy, and critical thinking.en-US There will be unique art classes throughen-US-en-US out the day, including Chromatography en-US Flowers at noon, Watercolor Experien-US -en-US ments at 1 p.m., Sumanagashi Marble en-US Painting at 2 p.m., and Wax & Sodium en-US Chloride Resist at 3 p.m., during which en-US participants will explore the reactions of en-US watercolor with crayon and salt to create a en-US unique picture.en-US Riverside Theatre staff and actors will en-US perform two plays, River Rat and Cat and en-US Snow White.en-US A company called Mad Science will presen-US -en-US ent a Fire and Ice Show, demonstrating the en-US properties of fire and combustion by proen-US -en-US ducing a flaming fireball. Demonstrations en-US involving dry ice will explore the science en-US behind the frozen gas.en-US Exhibitors will include FAU Harbor en-US Branch, National Weather Service, Old Vero en-US Ice Age Site Committee, and the IRC Sheren-US -en-US iffs Department CSI Lab. St. Lucie Chrisen-US -en-US tian Robotics will show students how to en-US build and operate a mini bot, and T.E. Schlitt en-US Engineering will demonstrate how to make en-US your own rocket.en-US Only one event will require an extra payen-US -en-US ment on top of the $5 admission fee, and en-US that is a VIP luncheon with astronaut Winen-US -en-US ston Scott for $35.en-US Weve asked astronaut Winston Scott to en-US talk about his experiences in space at a level en-US that children can understand, Ms. Brown en-US said. A lot of that will also be questions and en-US answers, so the kids will get to engage with en-US him and ask him about things theyre interen-US en-USested in. Hes got a great sense of humor and en-US is very down to earth.en-US Admission is $5 per person, children en-US under three free. Food will be available for en-US purchase from Treasure Coast Concessions. en-US Indian River STEAM Fest will take place en-US April 14, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., rain or shine, in the en-US Intergenerational (iG) Recreation Center on en-US Oslo Road at 1590 9th St SW, in Vero Beach. en-US Mad Science shows are at 10:30 a.m. and en-US 2:30 p.m. The Riverside Theatre presents en-US River Rat and Cat at 12:30 p.m. and Snow en-US White at 1:30 p.m.en-US For more information, email en-USindianriveren-US -en-US steamfest@gmail.com en-US or visiten-US www.indianen-US-en-US riversteamfest.com, en-US where you can also puren-US -en-US chase tickets. en-US For updates, follow the event on Facebook en-US at Indian River STEAM Fest. 2.50% APY 60 MONTHS Member FDIC www.OculinaBank.com Annual Percentage Yield rate is effective as of February 28, 2018 and subject to change without notice. en-USIm not helping!en-USA certain grocery chain asks me to conen-US -en-US tribute to buy food for the hungry every en-US time I shop there. I finally told them I pay en-US federal income tax which buys the hungry en-US food stamps. I will not pay twice by donaten-US-en-US ing at their store. Let the 50 percent of the en-US people who do not pay income taxes donate en-US at the store.en-USSticker shock at the moviesen-USI recently had the pleasure of taking my en-US two granddaughters to the movies in the en-US daytime but was shocked to see there were en-US no daytime deals. For a child, the price was en-US the same as an adult so our little outing to a en-US movie including a small lunch added up to en-US over $40. Whatever happened to daytime en-US matinees? I would think that more people en-US would take advantage of a cool movie theen-US-en-US ater in the afternoon than being outside all en-US day but at these prices, I can understand en-US why people have to find other things to do. en-US It would be nice to offer movies at an afforden-US -en-US able price so all could enjoy them once in en-US awhile.en-USLife is not fairen-USYou hear it said that until you accept the en-US fact, Life is not fair, you will never be truly en-US happy in life. This Country started by fighten-US-en-US ing against that concept. We have always en-US fought against just giving up against adversien-US -en-US ty no matter how hopeless it seems to be. en-US The slaves fought against unfairness, The en-US Jews fought against it, and now the people en-US bombed with GAS fight against it. People en-US with no availability of Health Care fight en-US against unfairness also. Many people gave en-US their lives and limbs to make right the en-US unfairness and cruelty of the ones in power. en-US If the wealthy get ALL the money and own en-US ALL the food and ALL the medicine in the en-US world do the rest just say; "Oh well, LIFE IS en-US NOT FAIR? Since we are all born on Earth, en-US not by choice, it seems to me that we should en-US ALL have at least the The right to live and en-US at least the chance of happiness. If we have a en-US right to live; then we should also have A en-US right to die, with dignity. A person who has en-US a terminal illness and in extreme pain en-US should not have to suffer and be used as an en-US income source for others in order to have an en-US Off shore account or something else for en-US their happiness. It is that time of year when en-US we should all be reminded of the messages en-US given to us by someone who has the power en-US to create life. It seems to me that we, as en-US HUMANS, really have no power at all and en-US that we are ALL on this short journey in life en-US together. We all must get old and die, that is en-US unfair, but we dont know why we were put en-US here? Maybe life is some sort of TEST to see en-US what kind of SOUL we have?en-USCell phones and car accidentsen-USI dont like the word older. I like mature, en-US and those of you ranting about mature en-US drivers are going to be there sooner then en-US you think.en-US We have a high majority of mature driven-US -en-US ers in Florida; lots of them from other parts en-US of the country, where there are different en-US road rules.en-US I dont like the idea that all you young en-US kids below 50 think we cant drive and en-US should turn in our keys. Aint going to hapen-US -en-US pen, as long as we dont have another choice en-US of good reliable on time transportation en-US available. Believe me, we would if we had a en-US good transportation system but we dont. en-US Yes, we take things more slowly, obey the en-US rules and dont speed when we drive; and en-US that is why most of us drive safely.en-US As for the stats given, I checked them. en-US Pedestrians are top for automobile accidents en-US and death. I en-US counted six tickets on one of my 30-year-old en-US neighbors, as I drove first in front and then en-US in back of them the other day everything en-US from speed to no signals. Unfortunately, no en-US police officer was around to issue them, and en-US that is a problem, because we do not have en-US enough of them to police our roads properen-US -en-US ly.en-US All older cars on the road are not hazards. en-US I drive a classic with 53,000 miles; built in en-US Detroit, Michigan, USA, not China, Japan en-US or Mexico, etc.en-US Just remember, you youngsters, you will en-US get here; and there are people in all age en-US groups who should turn in their keys. en-US 9 en-USTREASURE COAST One local organien-US -en-US zation is going all-out for people with disen-US-en-US abilities. EmployU, a nonprofit organization en-US working throughout Florida, helps people en-US with disabilitiesfind gainful employment in en-US whatever capacities they can excel in and en-US attain good jobs that highlight their skills.en-US EmployU staff members help clients with en-US resumes, job applications and meet with en-US businesses to find jobs suited to their en-US strengths.en-US Many businesses, such as Publix employ en-US people with disabilities, but are not in the en-US position to hire more profoundly disabled en-US people. They typically offer bagger positions en-US to the disabled, in many cases, although en-US those are much-appreciated by EmployU en-US staff.en-US But Employment Specialist Susan Marino en-US said there are many businesses in the comen-US -en-US munity that have made a difference by taken-US -en-US ing a chance and investing in other clients. en-US Many of these are privately owned businessen-US -en-US es and not necessarily big corporations, she en-US said. en-US I felt that if we give some positive attenen-US -en-US tion to these businesses, then other local en-US businesses might also be encouraged and en-US motivated to give people with disabilities a en-US chance, Ms. Marino said. I personally en-US work within four counties on the Treasure en-US Coast Indian River, St. Lucie, Okeechobee en-US and Martin counties and have helped hunen-US-en-US dreds of folks find meaningful employment. en-US I feel passionate about helping people find en-US purpose through employment.en-US What many people dont realize is that a en-US disability can occur from birth to death, Ms. en-US Marino added, and some are born with en-US developmental disabilities while others are en-US injured when they experience things like en-US strokes, macular degeneration or accidents en-US that render them unable to do their previous en-US jobs.en-US Vocational rehabilitation has a team of en-US engineers that they can provide to the en-US employers to make accommodations to en-US employees, Ms. Marino said. In some en-US cases, there are devices they can use to overen-US -en-US come their disabilities.en-US For all of these clients, employment proen-US -en-US vides a sense of community and is a great en-US source of socialization, according to a press en-US release. While many people with disabilities en-US live in isolation, employment increases en-US self-esteem and leaves them with a profound en-US sense of gratitude to these companies and en-US long-term commitment to their jobs.en-US Employers are not typically eager to en-US accommodate people with disabilities and en-US we all know what the law is: The Americans en-US With Disabilities Act states that they have to en-US offer opportunities equally, but we all know en-US that is not always the case.en-US Ms. Marino cited a number of clients she en-US has been able to help along the way, includen-US -en-US ing Austin Beers. Hes a 21-year-old young en-US man with dwarfism, high-frequency deafen-US -en-US ness as well as developmental disabilities. en-US He is not able to read, write or communicate en-US verbally. Hes survived both brain and open-en-US heart surgeries during his short life, but had en-US a big dream: to be a chef. But due to his en-US small stature, issues with dexterity and comen-US -en-US munication problems, his options were limen-US-en-US ited at best.en-US Ms. Marino worked with Mr. Beers and en-US helped him develop skills for an eight-week en-US training course that was paid by EmployU at en-US Longhorn Steakhouse in Jensen Beach. He en-US worked with Job Coach Michelle Hansen to en-US develop learning skills that could be applied en-US in future employment, and Longhorn has en-US been a long-time partner, working with en-US thousands of students with disabilities.en-US But Kyle Greene of Kyle Gs Prime Seaen-US -en-US food & Steaks on Hutchinson Island, who en-US opened his business in late 2017 has hired a en-US high-functioning client named Willie, who en-US is still working there. en-US I approached Kyle again in February to en-US challenge him with helping Austin en-US withhisdream. I was completely transparen-US -en-US ent and said, Listen Kyle, this is going to be en-US tough, Im not going to lie, Ms. Marino en-US said. And Mr. Greene agreed to meet with en-US Austin and offered him a job on the spot. en-US Mr. Greene also agreed to let me personally en-US provide job coaching for Austin since I have en-US a background in culinary training.en-US In the meantime, Mr. Greene and his en-US entire staff have welcomed Mr. Beers with en-US open arms. He works three days a week, en-US peeling potatoes, wrapping baked potatoes en-US and cleaning scallops, and is a tireless worken-US-en-US er. The staff at EmployU is developing visuen-US -en-US al-aids to help the staff at Kyle Gs with comen-US -en-US munication, since speaking is difficult and en-US vocabulary is limited for him. en-US Well make a picture-book of things Ausen-US-en-US tin will need food, utensils, etc. when a en-US job coach is not available, Ms. Marino FREE SUBSCRIPTION FREE DELIVERY MORE CIRCULATION MORE READERS MORE RESULTS! My personal reasons are (not en-US health related) that I did not intend to be in en-US office beyond one four-year term. However, en-US I extended my commitment with a second en-US election due to my involvement with the en-US City of Vero Beach electric issue. The end. en-US Alright, OK, Im sure there are enough of en-US you reading this wondering what in the en-US world Im going on about this week so I en-US suppose I ought to take a few words to en-US explain. You see I recently read an article en-US online (an open letter to Google actually) en-US written by a very distraught fellow who en-US wanted Google to know just how badly they en-US messed up when they locked him out of all en-US of his data. en-US The poor guy goes on to explain that he en-US spent months switching all of his email over en-US to Gmail, all of his photos over to Googles en-US photo service (Picasa at the time), all of his en-US docs to Google Docs etc. etc. etcetera. After en-US painstakingly moving all of his data to en-US Googles servers (wherever the hell they are) en-US he woke up one day to find out his account en-US had been closed due to a terms of service en-US violation which he swears up and down he en-US didnt commit. en-US The bottom line is he spent a consideren-US -en-US able amount of time moving his entire en-US digital inventory up to Googles cloud, en-US didnt make any provisions to back any of it en-US up and then (just as Murphys law en-US demands) found himself completely locked en-US out. en-US Now, this column isnt about whether en-US Google had a right to lock him out of his en-US account or not nor is it some type of cry out en-US to the powers that be to change the way our en-US data is safeguarded when we hand it over to en-US the cloud. Its more of a cautionary tale to en-US remind us of that which we already know en-US back up everything! Even when entrusten-US -en-US ing your data to the cloud, back it to a local en-US drive as well! To not do so is just asking for en-US it. en-US Lets look at this a little closer shall we? en-US First the decision to use a cloud service en-US may be a decision that many are not even en-US aware that they are making. Let me try to en-US clarify a couple things, take email for en-US example. If you are accessing your email en-US through your web browser by going to en-US www.gmail.comen-US, en-US www.yahoo.comen-US en-US www.aol.en-US comen-US or any of the other email services that en-US offer web based mail service then guess en-US what? Your email is being stored and en-US managed in the cloud and if you should en-US find yourself in violation of the terms of en-US service you too could find yourself locked en-US out. (Just how well did you read those en-US terms when you signed up? You know, the en-US terms you have to click the Accept button en-US for in order to set up your account?) en-US Most email services allow the downloaden-US -en-US ing of email to a local email client which is en-US present on every machine out there Winen-US -en-US dows, Mac or Linux. You can set up your en-US computers email program (Windows Live en-US Mail, Outlook, Outlook Express for those en-US machines still running Windows XP, Mail en-US on Macs) by configuring the POP or en-US IMAP settings. Look it up in your email en-US services help settings and if your email en-US service doesnt provide for it then you may en-US want to consider an alternative. en-US Next lets look at the folly of uploading all en-US of your digital pictures to a service like en-US Googles Albums and then deleting the local en-US copies after you upload all of your pictures. en-US Why on earth would anyone do that? Well en-US Sean, we dont want all these duplicates en-US now do we? Well, actually, you do. en-US Sure uploading all of your photos to a en-US web based service is great but for Gods en-US sakes, dont get rid of the originals! Did you en-US know that you can get 8 gigabyte thumb en-US drives from just about any drugstore en-US nowadays very cheaply? Do you know how en-US many duplicate photos you can store on 8 en-US gigs? Then if anything happens to your en-US web albums you luckily will have all of en-US those pesky duplicates to fall back on.en-US The list goes on Google Docs Sure en-US save all of your Docs to cloud storage but en-US how about synchronizing them with a local en-US folder on your own machine, you know, just en-US in case Google goes belly up or locks you en-US out, it will be nice to have a backup. en-US As the concept of cloud computing en-US becomes all encompassing its important to en-US remember that its your data. Dont just en-US assume that they will protect it for you.en-US Sean McCarthy can be reached at en-US 888-752-9049 or en-US help@ComputeThisOnen-US-en-US line.comen-US (no hyphens). en-US 18 en-USOen-USne of the best ways to add some en-US tropical flair to your yard is through en-US the use of palm trees. There are en-US dozens of choices out there; some common en-US and some very exotic (and expensive). en-US Today I want to talk about a couple of the en-US more common varieties that you might en-US want to try in your landscape.en-US The Queen Palm is probably one of the en-US most common palm tree varieties that is en-US found in our area. These palms are native to en-US Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina. en-US This palm is very commonly used as a en-US landscape accent. Queen palms have been en-US assigned the name Cocos plumose. en-US The Queen palm is a very hardy plant en-US that is cold tolerant down to 20 degrees. en-US The tree is also relatively draught tolerant en-US and requires little in the way of watering en-US once the plant is established. The Queen en-US palm can grow upwards to 50feet.en-US The Queen palm boasts a smooth en-US straight trunk that is marked with evenly en-US spaced leaf scars. The top of the tree is en-US marked by a large canopy that consists of en-US feathery like fronds. The leaves are a dark en-US green and have a very graceful and tropical en-US appearance.en-US The Queen palm also has a spectacular en-US display of fruit and flower clusters that give en-US this tree a very unique appearance. In each en-US fruit is a seed with three spots.en-US Queen palms can be used in many en-US landscape environments including lining a en-US pathway or driveway, grouped together to en-US form a tropical en-US hammock, en-US used individuen-US-en-US ally to accent a en-US garden area or en-US for an accent en-US on your front en-US lawn. The uses en-US are endless and en-US the beauty is en-US amazing.en-US There is one downside with these palms. en-US Over the years, there has been a fungus en-US disease that is affecting some of the trees. en-US Personally, none of mine have ever been en-US affected.en-US Another common palm that this found en-US just about everywhere is the Areca Palm. en-US The Areca has feather-like green fronds en-US that radiate from several trunks, which en-US make this a good choice for use as a border. en-US Areca palms are slow growing plants that en-US will grow wider before they get taller. en-US One common problem that you can en-US encounter with these plants is the browning en-US out of the plant tips. en-US 19 en-UShappen in almost all cases. These palms en-US require bright indirect light and if you use en-US the plant indoors, keep it within 5to 8 feet en-US of a bright window. If you plant the palms en-US outdoors or use them as a border, plant en-US them on in a part of your yard that gets en-US some shade, either from the structure or en-US from larger trees that might be in the yard. en-US If the Areca receives too much direct en-US sunlight, it will cause browning of the en-US leaves.en-US The Areca palm requires a fair amount of en-US water but it will not do well in an area that en-US does not drain properly. It does not like to en-US sit in standing water. In addition, over time en-US you may notice a slight yellowing of the en-US leaves. This is normal with these palms and en-US using simple Epsom salts around your en-US palms can often offset the yellowing. Use en-US about a half-cup around each plant and en-US water in. Apply the tonic around your en-US plants about every month or so. This will en-US help keep the lush green color intact. en-USJoe Zelenak has more than 30 years experien-US -en-US ence in gardening and landscape. No, it is not a survey or en-US national trend published in some magazine en-US or from watching TV shows. No, I dont en-US watch people buying food in the grocery en-US stores. en-US It is information and research I gather en-US from a very special group of people based en-US on data from observing their eating habits. en-US Who are these people? What makes them en-US so special? Is the information accurate? en-US Absolutely, positively yes and here is why.en-US My brother-in-law is the special weapons en-US instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy at en-US Annapolis, Md., and each year, at Spring en-US Break, he takes the Combat Arms Team to en-US compete in several events on the east coast. en-US The last event is in Volusia County, so he en-US always brings the team to our home to en-US spend the night, and I feed them dinner and en-US breakfast the next day. en-US For years I have fed them meat and en-US potatoes, prime rib, pork roasts, potatoes en-US and no vegetables, with brownies for en-US dessert. Breakfast was biscuits and gravy, en-US bacon and eggs, and more bacon. en-US Not this year. Yes, I had the prime rib, but en-US they requested roasted chicken, salmon, en-US fresh salads, gluten free bread and lots of en-US fresh fruit. en-US Now these 12-14 college students, en-US ranging from freshmen to seniors, repreen-US -en-US sented a cross-section of America. Each en-US year they would normally eat two prime en-US ribs, a beef brisket, 20 pounds of roasted en-US potatoes, five big loaves of homemade en-US bread, five pounds of cheese and 50 en-US brownies. This year they ate six roasted en-US chickens, two salmon slabs, 3/4 of a prime en-US rib, a large salad, and I mean large, little en-US bread, 15 brownies and all the fruit in the en-US house, which included more than six flats en-US of strawberries, six flats of blueberries, five en-US pounds of grapes and two dozen oranges. en-US The next morning I made eggs and en-US bacon, and some shrimp and cheese grits, en-US and, yes, more fresh fruit. They ate the eggs en-US and bacon, all the fresh fruit plus five en-US gallons of orange juice, little shrimp and en-US grits. en-US Yes, times are changing and so are the en-US eating habits of the country, because I have en-US the facts to prove it. I am afraid they missed en-US out on a great Southern treat, but you dont en-US have to. Here is my New Orleans style en-US cheese shrimp and grits recipe. Its still en-US worth trying.en-USSHRIMP AND GRITSen-USServes 6en-US Ingredientsen-US 1-1/2 pounds medium shrimp, peeled, en-US halved lengthwise and deveined en-US Juice of 1 lemon en-US 1 teaspoon Tabasco or other hot pepper en-US sauce en-US 1-1/2 teaspoon salt or more to taste en-US 1-1/2 cups stone-ground grits, not instant en-US or quick-cooking en-US 6 thick slices bacon, chopped en-US 2 cups half and half cream en-US 2 tablespoons unsalted butter en-US 2 cups grated medium to sharp en-US Cheddar cheese en-US Directionsen-US Combine the shrimp with the lemon en-US juice and a couple of generous splashes of en-US hot pepper sauce; set aside. en-US Add grits, half and half cream, butter, and en-US salt into a two quart pot. en-US 22 en-USNen-USow that was a fun golf tournament en-US to watch! This years Masters had en-US everything we hoped for.en-US We had the hype before the event began. en-US The best players in the sport were all hitting en-US their stride and it looked like wed be in for en-US a weekend of one great moment after en-US another.en-US We had a player making a hole-in-one at en-US the Par 3 Contest, dislocating his ankle, en-US popping it back in and going on to finish en-US tenth. en-US Our greatest champion, Jack Nicklaus, en-US witnessed his grandson G.Ts first ace in the en-US same event and said, With all due respect en-US to The Masters, allow me to put my six en-US Green Jackets in the closet for a moment an en-US say that I dont know if I have had a more en-US special day on a golf course.en-US Mother Nature gave us some great en-US weather. Save for some rain on Saturday, the en-US flowers were blooming, the air was crisp en-US and breeze was blowing.en-US The tournament kicked off with the en-US greatest tradition in our sport. The en-US Ceremonial Tee Shot. Its like weve handed en-US the bottle of champagne to our greatest en-US players and asked them to pop the cork and en-US officially get this golf year started.en-US Every year, the moment is watched by en-US fans, players and dignitaries alike. Its not en-US unusual to see players who have hours en-US before they tee off, right there to watch the en-US moment. There is none like it at any other en-US time in our sport.en-US Last year was filled with tears and joy as en-US The Masters paid tribute to Arnold Palmer. en-US Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus had a en-US difficult time hitting their shots as they en-US fought tears and made loving gestures to en-US the heavens to acknowledge the late Palmer.en-US This year the feeling was much different. en-US There was joy and laughs and even some en-US ribbing as Player out-drove Nicklaus. en-US Dont worry about out-driving me now. en-US You out-drove me for 50 damn years, en-US Player told Jack after they had hit their en-US shots.en-US For many of us the trio of the Nicklaus, en-US Player and late Palmer, were, and still are, en-US our golf heroes. They represent all that is en-US great in our sport. Its a tradition that I hope en-US continues when this pair can no longer en-US perform.en-US During Thursdays round one patron was en-US nearly on the outside of Magnolia Lane en-US looking in. We all hate those idiots who yell en-US Get in the hole! or Mashed Potatoes or en-US some other sort of nonsense after every en-US shot, even tee shots on par-fives. One such en-US genius was on-hand to do just that after a en-US tee shot. Immediately Augusta National en-US Security descended on the spot looking for en-US the offender. There would be none of that en-US on these hallowed grounds.en-US One writer carrying his credentials was en-US asked who had yelled. No one seemed to en-US know and no one pointed anyone out. en-US When asked what en-US would have happened en-US had they caught this en-US person, they were told en-US that his badge would be en-US revoked permanently, en-US he would have been en-US escorted off the en-US property and never en-US allowed to return. Ever. en-US Now this is a rule I en-US think we would all love en-US to see enforced!en-US As I get older I find en-US myself pulling for the en-US older, former champien-US -en-US ons at Augusta. Fred en-US Couples and Bernhard Langer are two en-US former champions who put on a great show, en-US but eventually saw their games fade over en-US the weekend. The pair finished tied for en-US 28th, only two shots behind Tiger Woods, en-US who needed a final round 69 to pass them en-US on the leaderboard. en-US Another old-timer, Tom Watson won the en-US aforementioned Par 3 Contest on Wednesen-US -en-US day. Its an event that no one has won and en-US gone on to slip on the Green Jacket in the en-US same year.en-US The week went by as many expected with en-US the best players making great shots and en-US posting good scores. Tiger Woods, who so en-US many felt was ripe for a win, struggled in en-US his return and finished well behind, never a en-US factor in the event. There were others to en-US pick up the slack.en-US It all came down to some fantastic play at en-US the end. Jordan Spieth came from 10 shots en-US behind to actually tie for the lead late in his en-US round. Rickie Fowler had his best Sunday at en-US the Masters with a 67, including a birdie on en-US the last to out some pressure on Patrick en-US Reed. In the end he would be there to en-US congratulate the winner.en-US After all was said and done, it was Reed, en-US making clutch putt after clutch put, after en-US clutch shot, that won the 2018 Masters. He en-US played the best, made the tough shots when en-US he needed them and is a truly deserving en-US champion. en-US In all it was a wonderful first major of the en-US year. I can hardly wait until June for the en-US next one.en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years.
