en-US 2 en-USINDIAN RIVER COUNTY Followen-US -en-US ing a lengthy dispute, pregnant Indian en-US River County firefighter Nicole Morris en-US has been approved for light duty.en-US Ms. Morris had experienced a running en-US disagreement with County Fire Chief en-US John King regarding her shifts since en-US before the beginning of her pregnancy.en-US Ms. Morris spoke at a County Commisen-US -en-US sion meeting March 6, as did John OConen-US -en-US nor, President of the International Associen-US -en-US ation of Firefighters Local 2201.en-US I have been with the county for about en-US 10 years, Ms. Morris told the County en-US Commissioners. For me this is not about en-US light duty. It has become about light duty, en-US but that was not my original request.en-US I originally went to Chief King with en-US my husband about two years ago to disen-US-en-US cuss my options in order to plan a pregen-US -en-US nancy. I wanted to see how I was going to en-US be able to do this, and keep my job, and be en-US safe.en-US Ms. Morris said Chief King suggested to en-US her that she plan her pregnancy for the en-US end of the year, so she could use her 12 en-US leave days and then have another 12 days en-US at the start of the new year.en-US I dont know who can plan a pregnancy en-US like that, Ms. Morris said. It just doesnt en-US work that way. She said that she and her en-US husband decided to wait, to not get pregen-US -en-US nant, and see if anything would change. en-US Nothing changed, she said, so she and her en-US husband decided in the last year that they en-US had waited long enough.en-US When I conceived, I reached back out en-US to Chief King ... and was denied a second en-US time, Ms. Morris said.en-US Mr. OConnor, of the firefighters union, en-US told the commissioners We have a female en-US who is eight months pregnant and is en-US expected to go into a burning building en-US and perform firefighting duties. Let that en-US sink in for a minute.en-US The countys lack of a light duty pregen-US -en-US nancy policy is bad, because the potential en-US hazards faced by firefighters including en-US physical exertion, hypothermia, and expoen-US-en-US sure to carbon monoxide and other toxic en-US gasses become magnified when we are en-US talking about a pregnant female and an en-US unborn child, Mr. OConnor said.en-US The county has refused to work with en-US the union and has denied multiple en-US requests for pregnancy accommodations en-US on the grounds that it is bound by the conen-US -en-US tract. We proposed a pregnancy policy en-US early in the last contract negotiation sesen-US -en-US sion, but the county discarded it.en-US Manatee County and Indian River en-US County are the only ones that dont have en-US these provisions in place. Manatee County en-US does not have any female firefighters, so it en-US doesnt even have a need to create a pregen-US -en-US nancy policy. The events are part of en-US National Crime Victims Rights week, which en-US runs from April 8 to 14, and they include en-US vigils across the Treasure Coast.en-US On Friday, April 13 will be the 16th en-US Annual 19th Judicial Circuit Victims Rights en-US Week Appreciation Luncheon and Silent en-US Auction, and the keynote speaker this year en-US is Tom Bakkedahl, chief assistant state attoren-US -en-US ney for the 19th Judicial Circuit. Its imperative that we en-US recognize the folks that are working so hard, en-US every day. They provide a lot of different en-US types of support and they help victims en-US rebuild their lives and help victims cope en-US with the impact of the crimes.en-US During the luncheon, awards will be preen-US -en-US sented to individuals and agencies from en-US Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and/or en-US Okeechobee counties that have provided en-US outstanding service to crime victims. en-US The Outstanding Service to Victims en-US Awards are given annually to recognize an en-US individual, department or agency that en-US through dedication and commitment has en-US provided outstanding service to crime vicen-US -en-US tims in Indian River, Martin, St. Lucie, and/en-US or Okeechobee County and made a lasting en-US contribution to help further the cause of en-US Victims Rights in the 19th Judicial Circuit en-US of Florida, according to a press release. en-US An individual nominee may be a paid en-US employee or a volunteer with a minimum of en-US three years experience in the field. We want to make sure en-US that all victims can be present and informed en-US or heard, so our main goal is to keep that in en-US the forefront.en-US All area law enforcement agencies and en-US sheriffs offices have representatives on the en-US coalition.en-US There will have a square card reader at the en-US door for anyone who would like to pay by en-US debit or credit card, but checks can be made en-US payable to 19th JCVRC or online at: en-US https://en-US -en-US cheon-silent-auction-tickets-43091866934.en-US Also on the upcoming calendar will be at en-US 1 p.m. on Monday, April 9 at the St. Lucie en-US County Courthouse on 2nd Street in Fort en-US Pierce, where SLC Sheriff Ken Mascara will en-US read a proclamation for Victims Rights en-US Week and there will be a short ceremony. en-US On Tuesday, April 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at en-US Gazebo Park located at 80 S.E. en-US 4 en-USINDIAN RIVER COUNTY An Indian en-US River County Assistant Fire Chief who en-US retired in early February has been arrested en-US for stealing approximately $300,000 from en-US the county.en-US Brian Burkeen, 55, of Fellsmere, was en-US arrested March 26 and charged with one en-US count of grand theft and five counts of dealen-US-en-US ing in stolen property, all felonies. He turned en-US himself in and was booked and released the en-US same day after posting $125,000 bond.en-US At a news conference, Sheriff Deryl Loar, en-US County Commissioner Peter OBryan, and en-US County Attorney Dylan Reingold outlined a en-US scheme in which Mr. Burkeen allegedly puren-US -en-US chased tires with county funds and then en-US resold them on the black market, pocketing en-US the cash.en-US Sheriff Loar said that his office had been en-US notified on Feb. 27 by the Indian River en-US County Fire District that they had discoven-US -en-US ered misappropriated funds relating to Mr. en-US Burkeen. IRSO launched its investigation en-US the next day.en-US As we continued this investigation we en-US developed probable cause for an arrest affien-US-en-US davit for Mr. Burkeen, Sheriff Loar said. en-US Our investigation revealed that over the last en-US three years, we believe, and the facts will also en-US indicate, that he committed grand theft to en-US the tune of nearly $300,000, as well as five en-US charges of confirmed dealing in stolen propen-US-en-US erty, i.e. tires.en-US It was a great shock to all of us that knew en-US Brian, County Commissioner Peter OBryen-US -en-US an said. It was a punch in the gut, quite en-US frankly. But we will look into this and make en-US sure we adjust our policies so it doesnt hapen-US -en-US pen again.en-US As soon as this was brought to our attenen-US -en-US tion, we worked with our auditor and also en-US with the Clerk of the Court, who handles en-US most of the finances for the county, Comm. en-US OBryan said. As we get more information en-US from the sheriff, and we can use that to do a en-US forensic inquiry of our practices, well be en-US looking at ways to see if we can change our en-US policies to make sure this doesnt happen en-US again. We are still waiting until the sheriff en-US can complete his investigation, we wont en-US have all the information that they have.en-US Mr. Burkeen would allegedly place orders en-US for tires with two different Goodyear stores en-US in the county. en-US What he would charge the county would en-US vary from $1,100 to $11,000, and then he en-US would sell them at a discounted rate, cash, en-US Sheriff Loar said.en-US Our belief is that he would use a county en-US fire pickup truck as well as county fire utility en-US trailer, and at times go to the Goodyear store en-US and have it prearranged the amount of tires en-US that he needed, different makes and models. en-US Then he would load those in and take them en-US to a location that were familiar with, and en-US essentially sell them on the black market.en-US Sheriff Loar added that the tires stolen en-US include makes and models of tires that did en-US not and would not fit any of the fire districts en-US vehicles.en-US Every tire that you buy has a unique en-US DOT code, Sheriff Loar continued. Those en-US codes and serial numbers were ultimately en-US matched up with receipts weve gotten from en-US Goodyear.en-US Officials said the scheme began at least as en-US far back as 2014, and may not have been disen-US-en-US covered yet had Mr. Burkeen not retired.en-US Upon his retirement, in the process of en-US other fire district personnel taking over his en-US responsibilities, they noticed inconsistencies en-US in the accounting practices, and immediateen-US -en-US ly recognized that there was a large amount en-US of tires being purchased with county dollars en-US at a local Goodyear center, Sheriff Loar said. en-US Mr. Burkeen even purchased a very large en-US amount of tires the day before he retired.en-US The sheriff does not suspect knowing en-US involvement by the people who purchased en-US tires from Mr. Burkeen, and doesnt expect en-US any buyers to be arrested.en-US According to our investigation, his comen-US -en-US ment to willing purchasers was that he had a en-US friend or relative in the tire business, and he en-US could get them at cost, Sheriff Loar said. en-US There probably wasnt knowledge that these en-US tires were stolen. I believe they trusted him.en-US Sheriff Loar also doesnt suspect knowing en-US involvement by the Goodyear stores.en-US The tire company has been thoroughly en-US investigated and interviewed, the sheriff en-US said. Their stance was that this is an assisen-US -en-US tant fire chief coming by, purchasing tires, en-US with purchasing power, purchasing authorien-US-en-US ty, nothing seemed out of the norm. He en-US would simply stop by or place an order, and en-US that would be fulfilled. He had a longstanden-US -en-US ing relationship with two different Goodyear en-US tire stores in our county.en-US I dont think there were any red flags en-US there. We have zero indication that the en-US Goodyear tire stores knew of his activity, and en-US that part of the investigation has been en-US closed.en-US The sheriff said that all the cases his en-US department is investigating involve tires en-US being sold within Florida. If they discover en-US sales outside Florida, federal charges may en-US apply.en-US Asked if Mr. Burkeen had confessed, Sher en-US-en-US iff Loar said he did make some statements en-US that indicated to us that he was in fact aware en-US that what he had done was wrong, which en-US only enhanced our investigation.en-US This is an ongoing investigation, Sheriff en-US Loar said. We have clues and tips coming in en-US almost daily. I chose to have en-US Hospice care for him at home. Well, these en-US people are just wonderful. Everyone of en-US them. They were so caring. You could tell en-US that they loved their jobs. They also care en-US deeply for the caregiver and offer assistance. en-US Toward the end, they gave him round-the-en-US clock care, sitting by his bedside. It brings en-US tears to my eyes just remembering what en-US wonderful care they gave him. Thank you en-US Hospice. I know there is a spot in Heaven en-US waiting for you. God Bless You.en-USMore about guns in schoolsen-USAs a retired educator, I would like to en-US respond to the recent misinformed post en-US regarding this subject. This writer, like so en-US many have fallen to the exaggerated hyperen-US -en-US bole, perpetuated by the ideological media en-US and politically driven.en-US The proposal insists nothing about ranen-US-en-US domly bringing guns to schools as insinuaten-US -en-US ed in the post.It would be a voluntary sysen-US -en-US tem only to be awarded to those individuals en-US who have completed an extensive backen-US -en-US ground check (which was the norm just to en-US teach during my career).Once that has been en-US verified, an individual would be required to en-US complete a 140 hour training period prior to en-US entry into the school.Im confident that this en-US training would require weapon security and en-US implementation in the face of any cataen-US-en-US strophic event.en-US During my teaching career, I have know en-US responsible colleagues who owned conen-US -en-US cealed weapons permits. I would trust them en-US implicitly if this proposal was initiated in en-US my school district. In our school, however, it en-US would not be necessary as the School en-US Resource Officer, an active county sheriff en-US who was admired by all, would not have en-US behaved in the same manner as the video of en-US the SRO in the Florida shooting indicated.en-US I am not an NRA member but I do supen-US -en-US port common sense approaches to problem en-US solving and feel individuals should underen-US -en-US stand details of resolutions before rushing to en-US ill informed, emotional conclusions.en-USWhats with the tiny white flies?en-USOur community seems infested with tiny en-US white flies, out lanai screens are peppered en-US with them daily, both front and back. We en-US live next to a small lake, not sure it its conen-US-en-US tributing to our infestation? I called the en-US Indian River Extension office for help, but en-US does anyone know of a solution to get rid of en-US them or is this just a pest problem we need en-US to live with for a short time? We live in en-US Sebastian and I see them all over when I en-US walk the little blond terror. Im curious if en-US others see them too?en-USWe need to do betteren-USFlorida barely made a C average with en-US regard to legislation passed that affects en-US every one of us. And that was being graen-US -en-US cious after what has been taken from educaen-US -en-US tion over the years to make sure big business en-US got their just rewards. According to the en-US FCAT system, that would barely be a passen-US -en-US ing grade. en-USWhere are the leaders?en-USSurely we can find more responsible leaden-US-en-US ers in all of Florida who would work to en-US achieve the goals we are desperately in need en-US of in the areas of water quality, smart en-US growth, gun control, assistance for seniors en-US and Veterans and quality education to fill en-US the needs of the population growth being en-US experienced in Florida.en-US Voting is a privilege. en-US Use it wisely.en-US An opinion editorial by former Judge en-US Ashley Moody, candidate for Florida en-US Attorney General en-USFen-USlorida has always drawn seniors with en-US its warm weather and white sandy en-US beaches. And, unfortunately, where en-US seniors go, fraudsters follow to steal their en-US hard-earned retirement savings. As a en-US former federal prosecutor and having en-US served over a decade as a circuit judge, I en-US know as threats evolve, we must evolve en-US with them to protect seniors across en-US Florida. en-US Increasingly, we have seen that the en-US fraudsters no longer need to be here to en-US prey on seniors. Fraudsters can now be en-US sitting across the country or even across en-US the world and make themselves look like en-US they are calling from a government agency en-US or a specific area code. In the last five en-US years, law enforcement has seen a en-US proliferation of scams directed at seniors en-US that are all too often successful. The en-US scams run the gamut of threatening arrest en-US or government action if money is not en-US immediately en-US wired to promisen-US -en-US ing winnings, en-US jackpots, or en-US refunds if a senior en-USprovides personal en-US or financial en-US information, or en-US prepays taxes or en-US fees. One en-US example, en-US fraudsters posing en-US as IRS workers en-US demanding tax payments that are not and en-US were not due have victimized 12,716 en-US victims who have collectively paid over en-US $63 million to fraudsters since October en-US 2013. Such scams can be easily avoided en-US with vigilance. en-US First, if what is being offered sounds too en-US good to be true, it likely is. Never give en-US personal or financial information over the en-US telephone to someone you do not know. If en-US a caller asks you for that information, it is en-US a scam. The Timucua Indians inhabited the en-US coasts of Florida at that time and they en-US enjoyed the local bounty of seafood, bear, en-US deer, turkey and alligators. The Spanish en-US called them dragons. en-US Their most popular and plentiful source en-US of food must have been oysters, because of en-US the number of oyster shell mounds found en-US along the coast with many more than 40 en-US feet high. Oysters were so plentiful the state en-US used ground oyster shells to build the en-US highway system. en-US Cooking was done over an open fire that en-US had crisscrossed strips of wood resembling en-US a grill. They were called Barbacoa. Meats en-US and fish were smoked on the wooden grills. en-US This cooking technique developed over the en-US years to be called BBQ. Caribbean pirates en-US used the Barbacoa to cook their food when en-US on land; oh, and drink their rum yo-ho, en-US yo-ho! Some historians believe that is where en-US the term Buccaneers came from. en-US Now what about the Spanish and food? en-US It all started when Columbus first came to en-US the New World and introduced foods from en-US Spain and Europe. He also gathered foods en-US from local natives in the Caribbean as well en-US as from Cuba. All this bounty was brought en-US to Florida with Ponce De Leon. en-US Local natives grew potatoes, corn, en-US melons, a type of wild celery, and onions. en-US Are you ready? The Spanish introduced en-US pigs, goats, lamb, chickens, horses, and beef en-US cattle. Thats not all. They also brought olive en-US oil, wine, cheese, tomatoes, peppers, en-US lemons, oranges, peaches, basil, oregano en-US and thyme. The Spanish introduced wheat en-US bread to Florida. Since wheat couldnt grow en-US here, they copied the local native corn en-US fritters, which eventually became known as en-US hushpuppies. en-US While the Spanish explored Florida, the en-US soldiers would eat oranges they had en-US brought with them spitting out the seeds as en-US they walked. Throughout the state there en-US are pockets of sour orange trees growing, en-US left over from the Spanish soldiers. Maybe en-US you have one in your yard. We do!en-US They also turned the cattle loose to roam en-US the state. Florida is the second largest en-US producer of cattle in the U.S. During the en-US late 1700s, cattle ranching took root. Men of en-US Scottish decent were recruited from en-US Georgia and South Carolina to find the en-US cattle. They were not called cowboys, but en-US cow herders. They were also called Florida en-US Crackers, which is a Scottish term for en-US someone who likes to play jokes and be en-US rowdy.en-US Florida has so much food history and en-US much of it is due to the Spanish. Here is a en-US simple seafood chowder recipe the Spanish en-US and early Florida settlers made. Why? Well because I examine en-US the contents of the different menus looking en-US for the option that will most likely get me en-US closer to my goal (while keeping in mind en-US whatever it is Im trying to do). en-US As an added bonus, just about every en-US program out there that has pull down en-US menus have Help listed as the last one to en-US the right. So by the time I get to the last pull en-US down menu I can always open that en-US programs help file and do a search on what en-US Im trying to do. The help file will then list en-US all the topics that contain whatever words I en-US searched on and from there I can usually en-US figure out how to take the next step.en-US Lets take a look at this in an example. en-US Lets say Im writing my column with a en-US typical word processing program and I en-US wanted to make the next line that I type en-US bold and larger. Lets also say that I only en-US have a very basic understanding of en-US computers. At this point I have two choices, en-US I can stare at the screen with a blank expresen-US-en-US sion and then call Bob (whos pretty good en-US with computers) and ask him or, I can start en-US looking around the screen for something en-US that may help me reach my goal.en-US As I move my mouse (and my eyes!) en-US around the screen I notice a couple of en-US things; first at the top of the screen, above en-US where the words are being typed, there are en-US (often) rows of menus and buttons en-US available. And, as I move my mouse slowly en-US over the buttons, little boxes pop up telling en-US me what each button does. When I click on en-US the File option it opens (or pulls down) en-US and I can see all of the commands that are en-US available that have to do with Filing. As I en-US move my mouse to the right, the File pull en-US down menu closes and the Edit menu en-US opens displaying all of the commands en-US available for editing. Next the View pull en-US down menu opens and then the Insert en-US menu opens. As each menu opens I look at en-US all the options available and for each one I en-US ask myself does this option look like it will en-US help me change my text to bold and larger? en-US And as each menu does not present an en-US option I go on to the next one eventually en-US getting to the Format pull down menu.en-US When Format opens, I see it lists Bullets en-US and numbering Borders and shading en-US and whats this? Font? Hmmm. Let me en-US think Im trying to change the formatting en-US of my text and text is made up of fonts. en-US Thinking I may be on the right track, I click en-US the Fonts option and a screen opens that en-US allows me to change the characteristics of en-US the type. Bingo! Exactly what I am looking en-US for! It says I am typing in Times New en-US Roman, Regular, Size 12. I change the specs en-US to Times New Roman, Bold, Size 14, click en-US OK and voila! My typing is now larger and en-US darker. en-US OK, so, that rather tame demonstration is en-US just an example of how intuitive computing en-US works; at no time did I ever get the urge to en-US go get a book or call tech support for help, I en-US kept in mind what I was trying to do and, en-US after seeing what options were available, en-US discovered the answer on my own. Instincen-US -en-US tively. en-US Now, I know what a lot of you are en-US thinking; that the things you have trouble en-US doing are far more complex than just en-US changing the characteristics of text, how en-US can this possibly help me? And to that I en-US answer the lesson is not in how to change en-US the font size, the lesson is where to go for en-US your answers! en-US Notice that the menus I looked at were all en-US within the program I was using. You should en-US look at the menus and options available en-US within the program where you are stuck. en-US Also notice that each pull down menu is a en-US category; all filing options are under File en-US and we found our Font options under the en-US Format pull down menu. That was no en-US coincidence. I would have been very en-US surprised to find the Fonts option under the en-US File pull down menu but starting at File and en-US moving to the right covers all the bases and en-US rapidly gets you familiar with all the menus en-US available.en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. en-US 11 en-USHometown News we might end up going en-US right next to it. When you dig in one little en-US area, it is a matter of not only expertise but en-US also some luck regarding what you hit. You en-US cant just dig up a whole acre you dig up en-US one small area. The site is about 13 acres, en-US and we may dig again somewhere in that en-US same site, though not in the exact same en-US hole.en-US Dr. Adovasio has been the Principal en-US Investigator at the site since 2013. He led a en-US group of archaeologists seeking answers to en-US many questions, including what the location en-US was like 100 years ago and as far back as en-US 13,000 years ago, during the Pleistocene en-US period.en-US Local citizens formed the Old Vero Ice en-US Age Sites Committee, or OVIASC, in 2010. en-US One of the most exciting discoveries from en-US the research OVIASC led was that a partial en-US skeleton found at the site, named Vero Man, en-US was actually a woman.en-US That is true, Randy Old, chair of the en-US project, told Hometown News last year. en-US Were better at figuring those things out en-US now than we were at the beginning.en-US The Emerson Center lectures will explore en-US how that discovery was uncovered, as well en-US as other mysteries that may be explained by en-US the research. Dr. Adovasio told Hometown en-US News that the Vero Beach site is highly sigen-US-en-US nificant.en-US First, one hundred years ago it was the en-US first site to seriously challenge the wisdom en-US that humans and ice age animals were not en-US contemporaries, Dr. Adovasio said. The en-US claim that humans were in the New World en-US at the end of the Pleistocene was en-US viewed as heretical to say the en-US least.en-US Second, the current excavaen-US-en-US tions at Vero are at the literal cuten-US-en-US ting edge of archaeological data en-US recovery and documentation. This en-US project, according to visiting proen-US-en-US fessionals, is as good as modern en-US archaeology gets.en-US Third, because of the extreme en-US precision of the excavations, data en-US from Vero promises to illuminate en-US the remote past of the first Floridien-US-en-US ans as no site ever excavated to en-US date.en-US Dr. Andy Hemmings, lead en-US on-site archaeologist, told Homeen-US -en-US town News The material were en-US finding is very exotic to the site. en-US Theres no local available stone for en-US making the tools that were so en-US important to these people at varien-US -en-US ous times. Were seeing materials en-US brought in from between Orlando en-US and Ocala, at least 130 miles away. en-US It tells us that we absolutely have en-US people here in the Pleistocene, en-US seemingly associated with butchen-US -en-US ering, killing, burning, 13,000 en-US years ago or older.en-US Dr. Hemmings believes that en-US people came to what is now Vero Beach en-US during the Pleistocene period, 13,000 years en-US ago, for the wealth of animal and plant speen-US-en-US cies found here, on the order of 180 differen-US -en-US ent ones: mammoth, mastodon, a host of en-US really interesting extinct things from the en-US end of the Pleistocene. Three kinds of sloths, en-US the dire wolf, the tapir, two kinds of llamas, en-US the American lion, the saber cat, all the en-US highlights that fire peoples imagination.en-US It was a bit of an oasis in the true sense of en-US the word, Dr. Hemmings said. Thats why en-US we see the wealth of plant and animals, and en-US we think thats what drew people here.en-US In 2017, over 300 bison bone fragments en-US were found at the site, adding to a remarken-US-en-US able collection.en-US From the beginning, Vero was one of the en-US more infamous archaeological sites in North en-US America because it was seen as such a threat en-US to the then perceived wisdom that no en-US humans had lived here during the last Ice en-US Age, Dr. Adovasio said.en-US You can be among the first to find out en-US what else was learned during the four years en-US of the Vero Dig by attending either of the en-US two free lectures April 7at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.en-US The Emerson Center is located at 1590 en-US 27th Ave, Vero Beach. en-US 12 en-USSecond, always use common sense en-US when dealing with someone that you do en-US not know. Stop and verify the information en-US before you send or wire money to anyone. en-US Call the government agency, a family en-US member, or someone you trust first. Do en-US not simply call back the number provided en-US by the caller. Look in the phone book or en-US online for the number to call. If the caller en-US tries to prevent you or dissuade you from en-US verifying what he has told you, it is a en-US scam. en-US Third, government agencies will not en-US contact you by telephone first and they en-US will not threaten to bring in the police, en-US other law enforcement, or otherwise arrest en-US you. And, the government will send you en-US something in writing first demanding en-US payment before reaching out to you. If the en-US government has not written you or the en-US caller threatens you, it is a scam. en-US Fourth, if the caller says you can only en-US pay a certain way, and that way seems en-US odd, it is a scam. Fraudsters often ask en-US their victims to wire money, put money en-US on a gift card, load money onto a cash en-US reload card, or otherwise require a specific en-US payment method, other than a check. en-US They will claim it is urgent and try to en-US justify the specific method. Do not fall for en-US it. en-US Fifth, never pre-pay taxes, transfer fees, en-US or other expenses in exchange for a en-US promised jackpot, sweepstakes win, or en-US refund. Legitimate organizations do not en-US and will not ask for prepayments. If a en-US prepayment is required, it is a scam. en-US Almost as important as avoiding being en-US scammed, is to report any attempted scam en-US immediately. You can file a complaint en-US with the Florida Attorney Generals Office en-US online atwww.myfloridalegal.comor by en-US phone at 1-866-9-NO-SCAM. en-US If I am elected Attorney General, I will en-US work tirelessly to put these fraudsters out en-US of business and protect our seniors. en-UScancers support group. To en-US properly enjoy the first major of the en-US year, you will need a few things.en-US Grab some extra sharp cheddar cheese en-US (10-12 ounces), spreadable cream cheese, a en-US large jar of diced pimentos, black pepper, a en-US loaf of white bread, powdered sugar, tea en-US bags, mint sprigs and a bottle of your en-US favorite bourbon. The last item is not a en-US requirement, but some of you may prefer to en-US enjoy a libation. Sweet tea works well for en-US those of you who prefer a non-alcoholic en-US drink.en-US For me, nothing rings in the beginning of en-US Spring quite like The Masters. With todays en-US television coverage, we now get to enjoy en-US every hole of this masterpiece of a golf en-US course.en-US Thanks to my childhood, The Masters is en-US my favorite tournament. As a child my late en-US parents would let me skip school and the en-US three of us would drive from our home in en-US Warner Robins, Georgia to Augusta. It en-US became a ritual every Tuesday of Masters en-US week. For just $5 each wed lace up our best en-US walking shoes and trek onto the hallowed en-US grounds of Augusta National.en-US I was only eight when I attended my first en-US Masters practice round. The place had an en-US aura about it. The flowers, the perfectly en-US groomed fairways and greens all combined en-US in jaw-dropping beauty. I remember how en-US green everything was with the breathtaking en-US coloring from the flowering trees splashed en-US in.en-US Because it was a practice round I was en-US able to meet and talk with most of the en-US players teeing it up each year. Every year I en-US would find myself picking one of those that en-US I met and pulling for him to slip on the en-US Green Jacket come Sunday. Last year was en-US special as my friend, Sergio Garcia en-US triumphed.en-US I felt incredible joy along with Jack en-US Nicklaus when he won for the sixth time in en-US 1986. I found myself remembering that day en-US a decade or more before when he promised en-US my mom that hed sign her ticket, and en-US looked for, and found, her in a crowd, en-US telling everyone that he promised her first. en-US My mom, at all of five-foot tall was not easy en-US to find in a large crowd, but Jack was en-US persistent. en-US One year, I met Lee Elder, the first en-US African-American to play in the Masters, en-US and thinking then, Why would anyone not en-US want this fine gentleman to play in their en-US tournament?. en-US The reasons many of us love The Masters en-US are numerous. For some seeing the same en-US course, and watching todays great players en-US conquer the same hole that Gene Sarazen en-US double-eagled to win in 1935 has a familiar en-US warmth to it. Its like seeing an old, dear en-US friend once a year. Its the only time well en-US see him, but we look forward to it knowing en-US that moment marks the beginning of the en-US best part of the year.en-US Some of us love the tradition that goes en-US with The Masters. Its the only tournament en-US that gives a spot in the field for every past en-US champion and starts play with a ceremonial en-US tee shot from our games living legends. It is en-US a fitting way to honor those who have en-US triumphed where so many of us only dream en-US of walking.en-US Now for the reasons that you need to en-US head to the store. One my favorite Masters en-US traditions is enjoying a pimento cheese en-US sandwich. Since most of us will not be at en-US Augusta National this weekend, well have en-US to make our own. To honor the tournament en-US I love so much, one that taught me so much en-US and that brings back a flood of fond en-US memories and a few tears to go with them, I en-US give to you my own secret recipe for those en-US famous pimento cheese sandwiches. en-US Masters Pimento Cheese Sandwich: one en-US stick of extra sharp cheddar cheese (10-12 en-US ounces), grated; 4 ounces or more soft, en-US spreadable cream cheese; diced pimentos, en-US not well drained; black pepper to taste. Mix en-US and serve on your choice of bread. I prefer en-US to cut the sandwich into triangle-shaped en-US quarters. en-US To drink, one must have some good, old en-US southern sweet tea or perhaps a Mint Julep. en-US My favorite is easy to make. Take 4 fresh en-US mint sprigs, 1 teaspoon of powdered sugar, en-US and 2 teaspoons of water and muddle them en-US in a glass. Fill the glass with crushed ice and en-US then add about 2-3 ounces of your favorite en-US bourbon. Stir and enjoy.en-US While you are enjoying your sandwiches en-US and beverage, flip on the television and en-US watch the years first major. I will be en-US watching along with you, with a smile on en-US my face and a tear in my eye as I think en-US about those wonderful days so long ago, en-US spent with my mother and father. en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years.
