S omebody out there knows or saw something the night Mrs. McPherson was murdered, Indian River County S heriff Deryl Loar said in a press release. That information may be what we need to close this case. I am confident that we will get justice for Mrs. McP herson and her family, S heriff Loar said. On July 15 2006, the beaten body of Helen Regene McP herson was found in her home on 49th Avenue in Vero B each by family members and law enforcement believe she was killed on July 14 or July 15. D etectives have not been able to pinpoint a motive for her murder, nor have any arrests been made in the case. The case continues to be actively investigated, said Sgt. Eric Flowers, public information officer for the Indian River County Sheriffs Office. S everal promising leads have been uncovered by our criminal investigations section and we are working with forensic experts in order to develop the evidence necessary to arrest and convict the suspect responsible for this brutal homicide, Sgt. If there is one basic function that everyone is familiar with and yet shrouded in mystery I would have to say that would be the print command. Again, everybody is familiar with the print command click the print button and your printer spits out a hard copy. But the reason its shrouded in mystery is there are a ton of options and controls available, most of which no one takes the time to learn, that give the user a lot more control over the printer output than many people are aware they have. Lets take a look at some of these functions and see if we can figure out what some of them are good for and why we would want to use them. U sing the print button in the toolbar of many applications (or the Q uick Print option in Word) will do just that quickly send whatever is onscreen to the printer using the default settings. What that means is that the computer has a series of preset settings that it will use by default if you dont tell it to do something different. F or instance, if you have more than one printer set up (perhaps y our real printer and maybe a fax program listed as a printer) then the computer will have one printer set up as its default If you dont tell it to print to another device then thats the one its going to print to. Other defaults include paper size, whether or not you want to print in color or grayscale and print quality. Clicking the print button on the tool bar will send the print job to the printer using these default settings. B ut what about if you want to change something? Suppose you want to print to a different printer or maybe you want to print using the low quality settings (draft) to save some ink, how can you adjust these settings if the print job sends straight to the printer when you click print? To get to the print menu that gives y ou full control look for the File pull-down menu at the top left hand corner of whatever program you are trying to print from. Now, be aware that not all programs have the File, E dit, View pull down menus that we v e grown fond of over the years. Y ou may or may not see the file pulldown menu if you are running Vista or 7 but that doesnt mean we cant get to where we want to go. If you have a File pull-down menu, click it. You should fine the print command listed and clicking that will pull up the print window. If you dont have the File pull-down then on your keyboard press and hold the CTRL button and then click P. That will open the print command the same as clicking File then Print. Now, I know what some of you are thinking why go through all that business with the File pull-down menu when CTRL + P does the same thing? Well, the reason I try to steer people in the direction of the pulldown menus is simply because there are other commands in there right next to Print that may not be available with the keyboard shortcut. For instance you may notice a command called Print Preview when you click the file pull down menu. Print Pr eview is a great command that saves paper by actually showing you a preview of whats about to come out of the printer should you commit and click print. The preview saves paper by letting you decide what adjustments you want to makeF riday, July 25, 20142Hometown News VERO BEACH www.HometownNewsOL.com 786312CALL TODAY FOR AN APPOINTMENT 772-562-SKIN (7546) Detection & Treatment of Skin CancerCosmetic, Surgical & General Dermatology Dr. Larry LandsmanBoard CertiedOver 25 Years of Dermatology Experience Private Practice, Miami V oluntary Professor, Dermatology Cleveland Clinic of Florida American Academy of Dermatology American Society of Dermatologic Surgery American Academy Cosmetic Surgery 102304 Gift Certicates available Hours 9:00 am 5:00 pm Mon. thru Sat.772-465-2224 Hybrid Teas Floribunda Grandiora Climbing Roses Hundreds of Fragrances to Choose From! y early budget as low as possible and the property tax rate, also called a millage rate, flat in an effort to reduce the tax burden during difficult economic times, but this year necessary expenditures and a decision to stop using county savings will require a small tax increase, said County A dministrator Joe Baird. The county commissioners voted to increase the general fund property tax r ate from 3.2620 to 3.3375, which r oughly translates to moving from a property tax rate for $3.26 per $1,000 in property value to $3.34 per $1,000 in property value. M embers of the public will be able to speak about the tax rate during public hearings on the tax rate and next years budget on Sept. 10 and Sept 16. Both meetings are scheduled to begin at 5:01 p.m. The rate set is slightly higher than what Mr. Baird originally proposed to the county commission because the commission chose to grant extra funding to various departments that Mr. B aird and budget director Jason Bro wn had not accounted for previously. The rate of 3.3375 is the maximum amount the general fund property tax r ate will reach and will be the figure sent out to property owners for the truth-in-millage statement by the county property appraiser, unless the county chooses to raise it are re-notify all of the property owners at the countys expense. The other taxes assessed by the county include the municipal service taxing unit, the emergency services district and a tax for a 2004 land acquisition bond. These tax rates were left virtually untouched, with the exception of the land acquisition bond, which decreased 2.5 percent. A home in Indian River Shores with an assessed value of $200,000 and a homestead exemption of $50,000 would be represent a taxable value of $150,000. Last year, the Indian River Shores property owners tax bill was $546.12, but this year, the tax bill is estimated to be $556.04. All other incorporated areas in Indian River County fall under the emergency services district and pay an additional tax to the county. Using the same house example as before, the property owner would see a tax bill of $853.03. All of the unincorporated areas will be assessed an additional tax for municipal services. Using the same house example as before, the property o wner would see a tax bill of $1,014.03. Mr. Baird said property values are expected to increase across the board about 4.5 percent, evidence of moderate improvement in the economy. F or the 2015 fiscal year, the general fund budget has been set at $72.9 million and includes funding for salary increases for county employees. Over the past several years, the S enior Resource Associations transportation system, Community Coach, has provided non-emergency transportation to individuals with Medicaid needing rides to medical services, including dialysis, doctor visits and cancer treatment centers. Changes to the Medicaid program, called Statewide Medicaid Managed Ca re, take effect Aug. 1 and includes a new rule that establishes contracts with specific transportation organizations for such rides, said Christie Johnson, marketing and public relations manager for the Senior Resource Association. H ealth maintenance and managed care organizations Humana, Molina, Pr estige and Sunshine will be responsible for scheduling and arranging transportation for those patients through transportation brokers Logisticare and A ccess2Care. VIEWPOINTFRIDAY, JULY 25, 2014 VEROBEACH WWW.HOMETOWNNEWSOL.COM PAGE 6Likes the paper, doesnt like ObamaI liked your paper before, but I really like the new format you have. Also, it is arriving on time, and I appreciate that, too. The only other rave that I have is that Ill call you as soon as (President Bar ack) Obama is out of office. Thank you. Bye.Disgusted with the T eachers UnionI am totally, totally, totally disgusted with the Florida Teachers Union and the Florida teachers, I believe. If its very union, why dont they speak up? I could not believe that they, the union, endorsed Charlie Crist, who left the state with (massive debt). And these people, the teachers and their union, are backing him again. I will never, ever support any additional tax for education. If the teachers cant control their union, how are we ever going to believe them about their spending? I am really turned off, and I am going to spread the word, too. And I am going to tell everyone I know that it is r eally pathetic that they would endorse Charlie Crist. What happened to the Rants and Raves? The main reason I even read the H ometown News is for the Rants & Ra ves column. Now, I dont know if you offended somebody, or whatever, but it seems y ou are getting squeezed out. Ev ery time you open the paper, you get less and less room not even a decent way to present what people want to hear and what people want to say. So whoever is being offended and has any pull about you being squeezed out, Id like to see them thrown off the cliff, because, lets face it. Most of us that read that paper, read it for the Ran ts & Raves. The rest of it is OK. Nice news, but nothing exciting.Like puzzles? Try this oneThe cheapest way to improve the lagoon: B ut first: I noticed, while sailing, a few miles from the Sebastian Inlet, a w edge of sea water moving under the brackish water. And it had stuff floating on it, but under the less dense water. Good clam habitat I thought! And clams can breed at an astonishing rate, if we give them some breathing room. So the puzzle involves the transport of clam spores in heavy seawater and the precipitates (food) from the polluted brackish water on top. A cheap, blue pipe through Patrick Air Force Base would provide one inch mile of seawater per day. (Its) not much, but just enough for clam habitats. Fur ther, if they opened the locks at the port at low tide, it, the pollution, would flow out.More and shorter Rants & Raves, pleaseIve noticed, since you have improved your newspaper and made it nicer, that you have shrunk the Rants & Ra ves, leaving only a few of them. And what Rants & Raves you do put in, some of them are so long that they take up a full page. Why dont you put less long, stupid ones in and put the short, important ones in, so we have something to read that is interesting, when people want to rant their raves? Is there a double standard? The law says that driving drunk can cause an arrest. Well, a police woman, while driving, drove off the road. When she was tested, her level was reported to be twice the limit. Was she arrested? N o! She is on paid leave, according to the news. Now, why is she treated differently? S ince she was drunk, then she should not be on paid leave, she should be in jail. The police are not above the law. If they break the law, then they should face the same arrest as you or me. What do you say? Will you raise your voice or stay silent? Will this statement even be printed? It is time that what is against us as citizens, the same should be for those who are supposed to uphold the law, which are the police. The law says that when we, the people, break the law, we are to be arrested. If I am driving drunk, then I am to be arrested. The family gathers around the new grill, because the one from last year r usted through or doesnt ignite anymore. How much did the grill cost you this y ear? And the year before that? And the y ear before that? By now (and likely a few summers ago) you could have purchased a grill that was made to last. At Brandts Appliances in Vero Beach, they have the solution for the casual griller to the grill master. Br andts carries only top brand grills like DCS, Fire Magic, Broil Master, A.O.G., and more. H imalayan salt stones. The salt stone is placed on the grill and the meat and vegetables are placed directly on the salt stone. Without any marinade, just a light vegetable oil, the salt stone seasons the meat and seers the flavor and juices into what youre grilling. The salt acts as an antibacterial, so y ou wipe the stone clean and its good to go for something new, whether it is fish or chicken without transferring any of the flavor. These salt stones last for about 20 years. There are also salt stones for turkeys that are placed into the turkey and helps keep the turkey tender and seasoned from within. When indulging in summer barbecue fun, there are a few tips from the experienced grilling masters at Br andts. F irstly, when youre turning on your gas grill, make sure that you click your igniter then turn on your gas slowly. M ake sure that the hood on the grill is open. Never have the grill hood closed while trying to ignite the grill. It will basically turn an ordinary grill into a boxed bomb. If your grill has not started within 15 seconds, you are to turn the grill off and wait for about five minutes. The natural gas that is in your tanks is heavier than air and sits in the bottom of your grill. If y ou try to immediately light your grill again, youre going to get a big woof of fire which could be harmful to your skin and eyebrows. We will have, by invitation only, cooking classes to be offered over the summer for those who wish to learn to cook on our grills which would be a good time to test out our grills and get a feel for them. At Br andts we hope that you and y our family have a great summer and hope to see you soon. Br andts Appliances is located at 6880 U.S.1,Vero Beach. The Vero Beach Recreation Department will present A Blast from the Past on Aug. 7Aug. 9 with performances at 7 p.m. at Saint E dwards School, marking the 40th year since the annual youth circus was established in Vero Beach, said Patty Howard, assistant r ecreation director. The circus is a tradition here, started by Peggy W ilkes whose mother was a circus performer with the Ringling Brothers, Ms. Howard said. Ms. Howard fondly r emembers spending summers during her childhood participating in the annual y outh circus from the tender age of 5 and on through her high school years. This years program will include routines that have been crowd or performer favorites from the past 1015 years, some with updates, others with no changes at all, honoring the integrity of the routines as they were originally presented, Ms. Howard said. JaliscoVERO BEACH One of Vero Beachs best kept secrets is nestled away on R oute 60. A y! Jalisco, a family owned and operated restaurant since 1997, offers more than just delicious fare, they provide a friendly atmosphere which is reminiscent of a sleepy town in Mexico. N ext to the restaurant, owner Gloria H uitron runs a grocery store that offers items that cant be found in some of the more popular grocery store chains. There are lots of people who come here because they know they can find ingredients here that they used to use while cooking back in Mexico, Ms. H uitron said. We also sell candies and treats from Mexico that are rarely found anywhere else. Its great to be able to provide these items to residents of the area, she said. The busy store was full of people holding conversations, laughing and generally enjoying themselves. I imagined that the restaurant next door would also offer the same atmosphere. The restaurant is decorated with cactus plants and sombreros, along with the carpentry distinct to Mexican architecture. The friendly staff is very knowledgeable and will help restaur ant-goers who arent versed in Mexican with any items on the menu that they may have difficulty understanding. We were treated to a tall glass of horchata, a rice, water, cinnamon and sugary drink that was incredible. The sweet drink played well against the heat of the fresh chips and salsa we ate while waiting for our meals. While our meals were being prepared, our waitress bought out some J alisco Fuego wings. I didnt expect to find chicken wings that were so delicious at this restaurant, but I couldnt have been more wrong. The wings were crispy and full of bold flavor. They had the right amount of heat, making fuego, the Spanish term for fire, and appropriate description. They were served with celery and carrots and were a perfect start to our meal. My guest ordered the Veracruz C ombo. The grilled chicken and garlic shrimp combo was served with rice and refried beans. The large shrimp we re incredible and absolutely burst with flavor. The chicken was grilled to perfection and was perfect with the beans and rice. I chose the Fiesta Platter which came with charbroiled skirt steak, grilled chicken and diabla shrimp, which basically means, hot and spicy shrimp. Ev erything on my plate was absolutely incredible, including the succulent shrimp, which were amazing in the diabla sauce. F or an incredible meal, with absolutely huge portions and incredible fair prices, try Ay! Jalisco. There are two locations in Vero Beach and one in S ebastian. There are also locations up the eastern coast of Florida. A y! Jalisco and the attached grocery store is located at 1909 20th St,Vero B each. There is also an Ay!
