en-US 3 Mr. Bakkedahl has earned the respect of en-USboth presiding judges and defense attorneys en-US who have frequently sparred against him in en-US the courtroom over the years. He said he gets en-US an adrenaline rush during the closing arguen-US -en-US ments of any trial, a fact confirmed by Circuit en-US Judge Robert E. Belanger who spent 10 years en-US working side-by-side as an assistant state en-US prosecuting attorney with the award-winner en-US before taking the bench 14 years ago.en-US Tom does everything related to litigation en-US at a very high level, he said. His trial prepaen-US -en-US ration is incredibly thorough with assiduous en-US attention to detail. His courtroom skills and en-US presentation are in the top 5 percent of all en-US attorneys I have observed in 35 years of pracen-US -en-US tice.en-US Judge Belanger said he particularly envies en-US Mr. Bakkedahls courtroom demeanor, which en-US he said also stood out to another 19th Judicial en-US Circuit judge.en-US Judge John Fennellys nickname for Tom en-US was ThorGod of Thunder because of his en-US intensity and passion, especially during closen-US-en-US ing arguments, he said. en-US Sewalls Point Attorney Bob Watson has en-US frequently witnessed those closing arguments en-US in the courtroom and admits any attorney en-US facing the prosecutor must be fully prepared en-US to meet him head-on.en-US When I try a case with him, I know that I en-US am going up against a really hard worker, he en-US explained. Youre never going to win a case en-US against him unless you have all your papers in en-US order. Ive seen him win a case that he never en-US would have won if he hadnt worked himself en-US to death. en-US State Attorney Bruce Colton agrees with en-US that assessment, having worked with the en-US prosecutor since 1991 and occasionally en-US co-trying cases with him. en-US Tom is intelligent and hard working, dedien-US -en-US cated to ensuring that victims are represented en-US and that those who victimize others are held en-US accountable, he said. Tom has the ability to en-US connect with jurors and builds a rapport with en-US them from the start of jury selection. He talks en-US in terms that people can understand, and his en-US legal arguments are well researched and conen-US -en-US cise.en-US Mr. Bakkedahl said he got the most satisen-US-en-US faction out of successfully prosecuting the en-US 2015 murder trial against Erise Tisdale, en-US charged with the killing of Sgt. Gary Morales en-US two years prior. He still recalls the pain of his en-US first loss, however, which came shortly after en-US he finished law school. en-US One of the very first trials I had as a brand en-US new prosecutor involved a theft from JC Penen-US -en-US nys, he explained. At the conclusion of this en-US misdemeanor trial, the jury acquitted the en-US defendant who had been caught red-handed en-US with the merchandise. As the jury filed out of en-US the courtroom, one of the juror stopped at the en-US defense table and turned to the defendant, en-US wagged her finger and told him Dont do it en-US again! It was a little disheartening to say to en-US say the least. en-US Mr. Bakkedahl is the second 19th Judicial en-US Circuit prosecutor to win the award, followen-US -en-US ing that of prosecutor David Morgan who en-US now serves as Indian River County court en-US judge. Mr. Watson said he holds a lot of en-US respect for the latest winner who he frequenten-US -en-US ly spars with in the courtroom.en-US I think that he has a lot of integrity, he en-US emphasized. Its good for me to be able to en-US trust what he tells me, Ive got many years of en-US him proving that hes honest and wants to do en-US the right thing as much as I do. We might difen-US -en-US fer as to what the right thing is, but he wont en-US bend the rules.en-US en-USAwarden-USFrom page 1 en-USGym only. Must be registered any day prior en-US to the event. Well en-US written.en-USOne-eyed drivingen-USWell, there is one thing that drunk drivers en-US do that texting drivers don't bother to do. en-US They keep at least one eye on the road at all en-US times.en-USGratefulen-USWhile in a convenience store on Septemen-US -en-US ber first, I was trying to operate a coffee en-US machine and my old cane kept slipping and en-US landing on the floor. A kind gentleman with en-US a big smile picked it up for me. I explained en-US that the troublesome cane once had a wrist en-US band that had long since worn off and I en-US hadn't found a lasting solution. "Well, I en-US won't be needing mine, soon. Why don't I en-US bring it in from my car and trade for yours?"en-US Before I could get over my surprise, he en-US returned with a brand-new cane with a en-US well-padded handle and a very sturdy wrist en-US band. This is the sort of kindness we need to en-US pass on. Whether it's a smile where you see a en-US frown, a helping hand, or the kind of activen-US -en-US ism that makes this world a better place, en-US we'll all be better off for the effort.en-US Thank you, kind sir. I've already paid it en-US forward.en-USEnforce littering lawsen-USThe trash and cigarette butts being left on en-US our beaches and roadways is really unbearen-US -en-US able. There are laws on the books regarding en-US littering, I wish they were enforced. I think en-US some of our tax money would be well spent en-US on some police and beach safety personnel en-US whose job is, while not completely specific en-US to, focused on littering.en-US It is all too common to see a smoker casuen-US -en-US ally toss a butt on the ground or stick it in en-US the sand on the beach. Ugggh. You only en-US need to have a roving beach patrol stop en-US when they see someone smoking on the en-US beach. The clouds of smoke are easy to spot. en-US When the person is done with their cigaen-US-en-US rette, usually in a minute or so, observe what en-US they do with the butt. If it goes in an ashtray en-US or empty bottle or pocket, great! If it goes on en-US the beach, issue a ticket.en-US The revenue collected from this would en-US more than pay the wages of police and beach en-US safety and keep the beaches and roadways en-US cleaner. If you do not want en-US the cat in your house why do you have one?en-US I am tired of cats urinating on my house en-US especially the front door, chasing and killing en-US small animals such as birds, doves, squirrels, en-US lizards, etc. I love watching small animals, en-US all in my back yard, and my dog has never en-US chased any of them because they are not en-US never out there at the same time.en-US So, please cat owners think of all the other en-US small animals that want to live and have fun en-US in a yard.en-USNo left turnen-USTwice today I witnessed vehicles coming en-US out of the plaza on the NE corner of Monteen-US -en-US rey and US #1 onto Monterey going West en-US and causing obstructions to the flow of trafen-US-en-US fic. The first vehicle was an A/C van that en-US blocked the traffic until everyone stopped to en-US let him make the illegal left hand turn. The en-US second vehicle (which surprised me very en-US much) was a Martin County Sheriff vehicle en-US who also impeded the flow of traffic just to en-US enable him to make an illegal left hand turn en-US and get into the lane he needed so that he en-US could return to the Sheriff's department en-US further west on Monterey (there was no en-US urgency, no flashing lights, just didn't want en-US to go to the proper exit and make the proper en-US turn to return to the Sheriff's department).en-US Because of this plaza having traffic turnen-US-en-US ing from US #1 onto Monterey going East, en-US the sign at the exit near Pei Wei says "NO en-US LEFT TURN" so as to not impede the flow en-US of traffic turning from Monterey to US #1 or en-US the traffic turning onto Monterey from US en-US #1 and maybe causing an accident.en-US I am so appalled by inconsideration of en-US first the A/C van and then to have the Sheren-US -en-US iff's Department do the same illegal turn, en-US setting an example of disobeying the law. en-US This is why our young people of today have en-US no respect for authority. In short why are you en-US answering the phone? The call back method en-US is very effective. Caller ID is helpful as it en-US identifies friends, important vendors/cusen-US-en-US tomers and relatives. As for calls you dont en-US recognize simply let them go to voicemail. en-US A phone with call memory will allow recall en-US of unknown numbers. When I call back a en-US solicitation usually the following occurs: 1. en-US the line is dead (no answer); 2. the marketen-US -en-US ing company announcement answers your en-US call and asks if you wish to be removed from en-US their call list (very handy); 3. a live person en-US answers but this is rare and they do not usuen-US -en-US ally get call backs and are off script. en-US 9 en-USdescribe a Skills Gap Study done by the Ecoen-US-en-US nomic Development Council in 2017 that en-US demonstrated the need for such a vo-tech en-US campus in the region.en-US They determined that healthcare, manuen-US-en-US facturing and the trades were all very much en-US in demand of employees, Mr. Graham en-US added. At the same time, they found they en-US [area businesses] were having great difficulty en-US in finding qualified persons to fill jobs open en-US on the Treasure Coast. The City Council was en-US a participant in all of this and developed a en-US commitment to action. One of your strategic en-US goals is quality education for all residents, en-US and you adopted an objective quite a while en-US back to work towards establishing a career en-US technical campus or center somewhere in the en-US city.en-US In addition, the city commissioned the en-US National Research Center to conduct a poll en-US of Port St. Lucie residents earlier this year to en-US gauge their interest in a vo-tech campus. en-US Eight out of 10 residents were indeed in en-US support, considering it essential or very en-US important for this type of campus to be en-US established, Mr. Graham said. en-US Mayor Gregory Oravec concurred with the en-US results of that survey, emphasizing the fact en-US that a comprehensive vocational/educational en-US center had been in the sights of previous city en-US councils as well with the goal of combining en-US the types of vocational programs currently en-US scattered around different school campuses. en-US The city has agreed to lease land in the en-US Southern Groves area at a very attractive rate en-US to the organization ultimately winning en-US approval from the city, School Board and en-US Florida Department of Education to build en-US and run the center. en-US Weve got limited time and money and en-US thats why we have the strategic plan to focus en-US on whats most important, he said. So with en-US this vocation technical career academy missen-US -en-US ing, that is the focus. Its not one program out en-US of 30 programs; its the program that brings en-US people together at a location thats walkable en-US to the City of Port St. Lucies Job Corridor, en-US thats walkable to the Center for Innovation, en-US and that doesnt exist anywhere else.en-US Mayor Oravec deferred to Councilman en-US Carvellis School Board experience when en-US asking about the difficulty of getting new en-US charter school applications approved locally en-US and the potential possibility of rejection, speen-US -en-US cifically referring to the Somerset application en-US that was initially rejected locally but ultien-US -en-US mately approved after a successful appeal to en-US the state. The latter emphasized the lengthy en-US timeline of the process, initiated by submiten-US -en-US ting an application by the Feb. 1 deadline.en-US Typically theres about 90 days of review, en-US Councilman Carvelli said. Then they give en-US feedback, they have meetings to determine if en-US they passed and made it through the local en-US shoot, and if they dont, they get to go to the en-US state Charter Schools Appeal Commission. en-US They make a ruling, so its time-consuming. en-US A typical scenario is Feb. 1, period to review, en-US get approval, denial, appeal and then if en-US allowed, 18 months to open, so that would be en-US August of 2020. en-US Because of the possibility of a denial by the en-US School Board, Vice-Mayor Shannon Martin en-US expressed the preference of two or three proen-US-en-US posals instead of just one that could potenen-US-en-US tially get shot down and force the process to en-US start all over again.en-US Given thats been the case, it may be best en-US to have up to a certain number of proposals en-US go forward to the School Board, she said. en-US Because if we have only one and it fails, then en-US were going to have to go through this whole en-US appeal process. If were lucky enough to get en-US more than one, then if you have them all go en-US through the process, then maybe we can have en-US a better outcome with the first shot at it.en-US Although Mayor Oravec initially wanted en-US to go with just one top candidate, he eventuen-US -en-US ally sided with the Vice Mayor and the rest of en-US the Board on the number of three potential en-US submittals to the School Board.en-US Ien-USn the issue of one or more selected en-US respondents, I feel that we should pick the en-US number one, allow them to go through the en-US process, and if theres some technicality from en-US the School Board, then they should be en-US allowed to go through that process, he en-US explained. Frankly, Im counting on the en-US School Board turning down the first applicaen-US-en-US tion. Thats how Im going into it, expecting en-US that will happen. And then I would want to en-US automatically go to the second one; I dont en-US know, Im conflicted on that. I feel one way, en-US but its not a hill to die on for me. So that en-US would put us at three. en-US As part of the process, Mr. Graham told en-US the Council that city staff would put together en-US a nine-member evaluation committee comen-US -en-US posed of citizens, industry representatives en-US and professionals who would vote on the top en-US vo-tech proposals for the Council to considen-US -en-US er for submission to the School Board. en-US Were recommending to you that this en-US committee actually be appointed by the city en-US manager with you as a Council confirming en-US those appointments at your next meeting on en-US Sept. 10, he said. The Evaluation Commiten-US -en-US tee will meet soon, Oct. 10 to 12 is our plan. en-US We would seek three seats from the Worken-US en-USforce Readiness Taskforce that have been en-US identified as those that represent industry, en-US specifically the Marine Industries Associaen-US -en-US tion, the Treasure Coast Builders Associaen-US-en-US tion, and the Treasure Coast Manufacturers en-US Association. The city manager is recomen-US -en-US mending that we appoint the chairman of en-US the Budget Advisory Committee or a desigen-US -en-US nee if the chairmans not available. And then en-US were looking to you to give recommendaen-US-en-US tions to the city manager on three additional en-US city manager appointments to round out en-US that committee.en-US For her part, Councilwoman Jolien Caraen-US-en-US ballo asked her fellow Council members to en-US agree to a town hall meeting to introduce the en-US top candidate or candidates to the public. en-US I would love to have the opportunity to en-US have the finalists come to the Community en-US Center or the Civic Center and be able to en-US present themselves to the community so en-US they can meet their perspective future en-US vo-tech locations, she said. I think that en-US everyone is so excited about it, and it would en-US be really great to do something community en-US driven and bring the citizens out and get en-US excited about the potential future in Port St. en-US Lucie. en-US Mayor Oravec and the rest of the Council en-US agreed to the idea but limited it to just the en-US top choice presented to the public. Councilen-US -en-US man Carvelli made the motion to accept the en-US RFQ, which was seconded by Vice-Mayor en-US Martin, who hoped to get the support of one en-US of the citys main business partnerships. en-US I would like to see our Economic Develen-US -en-US opment Council get behind us on this 100 en-US percent, she said. This school is going to en-US drive our economic development for our en-US future, and its really important. en-USCenteren-USFrom page 1 FREE DIGITAL MARKETING SEMINAR Media GroupDate: Tuesday, October 2nd Time: 9am 11am Continental Breakfast Venue: Hilton Garden Inn PGA Village Port St. Lucie 8540 Commerce Centre Drive Port St Lucie, FL 34983RSVP with your local Hometown News Consultant or contact Amanda Tucker at 772-465-5656 or

Maybe its just en-US your best friend or spouse. en-US Maybe its your three best buddies, or en-US maybe its a bunch of friends. For the en-US Wednesday Warriors Golf Group of Brevard en-US County, its a group of 15 or so, that has en-US room for more.en-US The group began in 2008 when a group en-US from north and another from south Brevard en-US County got together. The two groups had en-US such fun playing together that they decided en-US it would be a great idea to play together en-US more often. Wednesday being in the middle en-US of the week proved to be a great way to en-US break up the week for this bunch of mostly en-US retired golfers.en-US The name Wednesday Warriors came en-US about when the group from south Brevard en-US played in a tournament. They had to give en-US their group a name, and Wednesday en-US Warriors was chosen by the group and they en-US decided to keep it.en-US We are open to men and women aged 19 en-US and up, said member coordinator Domien-US -en-US nick Leone. The majority of our members en-US are veterans from all service branches, and en-US we currently four couples.en-US While the group is headquartered in en-US Brevard, there is no requirement that you en-US live there to be a member. In fact, the group en-US is a traveling bunch that plays as often en-US outside of Brevard County as it does in.en-US The week that I spoke to Dominick, the en-US group was heading to Orlando for the day. en-US The group car-pools to places out-of-town. en-US They do not stay overnight, preferring to be en-US out and back on the same day. Most travel is en-US no more than an hour or so drive from en-US Brevard. en-US The Warriors play every Wednesday, all en-US year round. Granted some members are en-US seasonal, but the group really wants en-US members to play each week as much as en-US possible. The bigger numbers allow en-US Dominick to get better greens fees for en-US everyone. en-US Tee times vary from week to week, but in en-US most cases are in the morning. There are en-US occasions where the group will move the en-US day it plays to accommodate holidays, en-US changes in playing conditions or to take en-US advantage of special pricing at a course. en-US Players may play any game they wish en-US between themselves. The group, as a whole, en-US does not have any monetary challenges. en-US Some players like to play for skins or a en-US Nassau or even a cold beverage. Thats en-US entirely up to those players. en-US The group plays by USGA Rules, but en-US allows some latitude. Members are also en-US given an unofficial handicap and an average en-US score, allowing everyone to see how they en-US perform against one another. en-US Pairings are made by the coordinator and en-US players are usually switched around a bit to en-US encourage everyone to meet and get to en-US know one another. Remember, the groups en-US main objective is fun and camaraderie. en-US Current members may bring a guest up en-US to two times without having them join the en-US group. A guest is anyone who is a friend, en-US acquaintance or local relative. Non-local en-US relatives may play up to four times per year.en-US Being made up mostly of retired military en-US service members, there is a bit of service en-US branch pride among the members. With en-US this in mind, the group holds an Annual All en-US Service/Civilian Challenge. Members of en-US each of the military service branches are en-US teamed against the other branches. The en-US current champion is the U.S. Army. My late en-US father would be happy. en-US In addition to the challenge, the group en-US also holds other events and socials throughen-US -en-US out the year. en-US 12 en-USHen-USi everybody and welcome! Almost en-US everybody likes the fresh taste of en-US citrus, whether it be oranges, en-US grapefruits or tangerines. Sometimes the en-US sweetest most delicious fruit can come from en-US trees that you raised yourself in your own en-US backyard. Today, I am going to talk about en-US growing citrus in your backyard and en-US indoors!en-US When most people pick out their favorite en-US oranges or grapefruit at the grocery store, en-US usually the first think they think about is en-US Florida. This delicious fruit was in introen-US -en-US duced to our wonderful state in 1565 by en-US Spanish explorers. To top it off, the Orange en-US Blossom is also our state flower. Most of the en-US fruit that is produced in our state is not in en-US south Florida but is in central Florida in an en-US area that we refer to as growing Zone 9. The en-US reason for this is that in order for the fruit en-US to get its sugar sweet taste, the fruit must be en-US subject to a period of cool temperatures. en-US While growers welcome cool weather, en-US freezing temperatures for more than four en-US hours can cause damage to the fruit. en-US There are many varieties of citrus en-US available and it is mainly a selection of your en-US own personal choice that should determine en-US which flavor you should buy. Look for en-US healthy trees that have dark green foliage en-US and no signs of disease or insects. Once you en-US make your purchase, it is time to take your en-US prize home and have some fun.en-US Citrus like to be planted in areas that en-US have good drainage and a full day of sun. If en-US the area you have chosen for planting en-US floods during heavy rain, build up the en-US ground with some topsoil to keep the roots en-US as much above the water as possible. When en-US planting your tree use a good quality topsoil en-US and be sure you do not plant in an area that en-US will be affected by your sprinkler system. en-US Citrus trees do not like excess water and en-US this can also lead to dry fruit. Do not be en-US tempted to water your tree too often and en-US also remember to keep the area around the en-US tree clear of any grass or mulch. Any of en-US these circumstances can cause potentially en-US lethal fungus diseases to destroy your en-US tree. You should also keep weeds away en-US from the base of your trees to be sure en-US proper drainage is established. en-US Another critical ingredient for good en-US citrus growth is fertilizer. Choose a good en-US quality citrus food that has minor eleen-US -en-US ments. You also should apply a minor en-US element spray that contains such ingredien-US -en-US ents as iron, boron and manganese. en-US One mistake that many citrus trees en-US owners do is try to prune their trees. The en-US truth is that citrus trees should never be en-US pruned. You should just let the trees shed en-US their branches naturally. Thunderstorm en-US winds and tropical systems will naturally en-US prune the tree as it sheds its branches. en-US For those of you that have limited yard en-US space or live in an apartment, you can en-US purchase dwarf citrus trees that you can en-US grow in a sunny window or on a balcony. en-US You can purchase these trees in Turnpike en-US gift shops, airport gift shops and at gift en-US shops in many of our tourist areas. You can en-US also buy them online. Once you bring your en-US plant home, plant it immediately so it does en-US not stay in the box for long. You should en-US initially plant it in about an 8-inch diameter en-US pot that has good drainage. Use a good en-US quality potting soil such as Miracle Gro. en-US Once your tree is well established in the en-US pot, you can transplant your tree to a 5 to en-US 25 gallon container. Remember, the larger en-US the container you use, the bigger the plant en-US will get. en-US Unlike citrus trees planted in the ground, en-US container trees will need frequent watering en-US and occasional pruning. When your tree is en-US young, if you prune a couple of inches off en-US the top, it will allow the tree to spread out en-US some instead of growing tall and skinny. Do en-US not allow the tree to sit in a saucer filled en-US with water. Be sure to drain the water from en-US your saucer if you use one. en-US If you have a balcony, you can put your en-US tree outside to get much needed sunlight. If en-US you keep it indoors, choose a location near en-US a sunny window. en-US The fruit that is produced from these en-US small trees will be small and usually is not en-US as sweet as its larger counterparts but the en-US fruit is great in jellies and also for adding en-US flavor to drinks.en-US Next week I will talk a little about a en-US disease that could potentially wipe out our en-US citrus population. That disease is canker. I en-US will see you next week with more great en-US garden tips!en-US Joe Zelenak can be reached at homeen-US -en-US SUNDAY BREAKFAST September 16th 8:30-11 a.m.(3rd Sunday of each month) $8FULL BREAKFAST MADE TO ORDEREggs, Pancakes, Homefries, Omelets, Bacon, Sausage, French Toast. Arent they slowing things down? en-US I never use most of them, cant we get rid of en-US them? en-US I usually answer by explaining that most en-US of the icons on the average desktop are not en-US slowing the computer down at all but are en-US actually more like speed dial buttons on a en-US phone. Most desktop icons are just en-US shortcuts to programs buried deeper in the en-US system and are on the desktop so you dont en-US have to navigate through all sorts of menus en-US to launch a program.en-US If you look closely at the icons on your en-US desktop, you may notice that some icons en-US have a little arrow in a little white box at the en-US lower left corner of the icon. The arrow en-US itself is kind of curvy and will point to the en-US top right corner of the icon. You may also en-US notice that other icons (like the Computer en-US icon, the User folder icon, the Recycle Bin en-US Etc.) do not have the little arrow. There is a en-US big difference between the two types of en-US icons the icons with the little arrows are en-US actually just shortcuts and not the actual en-US program (or file). And shortcuts are really en-US really tiny and dont slow the computer en-US down at all!en-US But what about the icons that dont have en-US the little arrow? Are they safe to get rid of? en-US That question is a little harder to answer. en-US You see, any icon on your computer that en-US does not have the little shortcut indicator is en-US either a user file or a system file and en-US messing with it can cause problems. Icons en-US on your desktop that are not shortcuts are en-US either files that have been saved on the en-US desktop or system files that have been set en-US there by the operating system and care en-US should be taken when manipulating them.en-US Another point that I want to make is that en-US people have different ideas as to what the en-US phrase get rid of means! When someone en-US asks me to get rid of all of the unused icons en-US on their desktop what they are invariably en-US asking me to do is to delete them. Now if en-US you have been reading my column for any en-US length of time then you know how I feel en-US about deleting things from your computer en-US its not something I do casually! In fact I en-US have a saying if I were king Id have the en-US delete button stricken from the keyboard! en-US My idea of cleaning a Windows desktop by en-US getting rid of a bunch of stuff is not to en-US delete everything but leans more in line en-US with the phrase out of sight, out of mind. en-US People will watch with a puzzled look on en-US their face as I create yet another icon on en-US their desktop (a new folder), name it en-US something like Desktop Clutter and then en-US drag all of the unused icons into the new en-US folder. Then, once the desktop is down to en-US just the icons that actually get used, I drag en-US the Desktop Clutter folder and drop it into en-US the Users folder. en-US Then I usually spend the next ten en-US minutes of so explaining why I went en-US through all that trouble rather than just en-US deleting everything. My explanation really en-US boils down to habit. One of the worst habits en-US people get into with their machines is the en-US habit of deleting stuff every time they tidy en-US up. Sure its great to have a tidy desktop but en-US if you are in the habit of casually deleting en-US stuff then eventually you are going to delete en-US something you actually need. Even worse is en-US the habit some people have of emptying the en-US recycle bin every time they delete someen-US -en-US thing. Thats just a disaster waiting to en-US happen.en-US My philosophy is out of sight, out of en-US mind. Tidying up my system by sweeping a en-US bunch of unused shortcuts (and actual files en-US for that matter) into a folder and then en-US moving the folder out of sight ensures that en-US if I accidentally do get rid of something en-US that I need, I can recover it easily enough by en-US digging into the folder where I moved it. en-US Does this mean that I am completely en-US against deleting everything? No, of course en-US not. Some things are indeed trash and I en-US have no problem deleting them I just have a en-US real problem with the habit of deleting en-US things with barely a second thought. Ive en-US seen too many people delete their way into en-US too many problems. en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers.
