Campaign finance en-US reports show theirs to be the most expensive en-US School Board race this year: Ms. Hawley spent en-US nearly $14,000 to secure her third term on the en-US Board, while Mr. Allen of Port St. Lucie spent en-US more than $16,000 on his bid for the seat. en-US In the District 3 School Board race, incumbent en-US Donna Mills also secured her third term on the en-US Board, easily defeating challenger Mark Young by en-USCounty primary results en-USIncumbents, familiar faces en-US ruled during the 2018 primary en-US electionen-USBy Donald Rodrigueen-USFor Hometown Newsen-USPORT ST. LUCIE -The five memen-US-en-US bers of the City Council voted unanien-US -en-US mously Aug. 27 to approve the second en-US reading of the ordinance enabling them en-US to put another piece of failed economic en-US development behind them once and for en-US all. en-US For the most part, Council members en-US have expressed an urgency to rid themen-US -en-US selves of the heavy millstone of the Floren-US -en-US ida Center for Bio Sciences from around en-US the citys neck. The $65 million strucen-US-en-US ture formerly housing the Vaccine & en-US Gene Therapy Institute has sat empty en-US since October of 2015 and costs the city en-US about $1.5 million annually in upkeep. en-US The citys special counsel overseeing en-US the disposition of the property, former en-US assistant city attorney Azlina Goldstein en-US Siegel, provided a brief history of the en-US property before explaining that the en-US ordinance at hand would fulfill a city en-US charter requirement and facilitate the en-US sale later this month.en-US Its the second reading of the adopen-US -en-US tion of the ordinance that will authorize en-US the city to a actually convey title to the en-US VGTI property to an intended purchasen-US -en-US er, she said. en-US 2 Were Here Day and NightFULL CIRCLE SENIOR CARE capturing 66.9 percent, or 32,078 of the total en-US47,950 votes cast. For his part, unincorpoen-US-en-US rated county resident Mark Young received en-US 15,872 votes. Finance records show that Ms. en-US Mills spent more to retain her seat -slightly en-US more than half of the $16,000 she raised -en-US to the $3,000 raised by her opponent. en-US The closest School Board race by far, en-US though, was the heated competition for the en-US District 5 seat between two ordained minisen-US -en-US ters. Incumbent Troy Ingersoll, the pastor of en-US Westside Baptist Church, narrowly fended en-US off a challenge by Fort Pierce resident and en-US ordained interfaith minister and educator en-US Felicia Bruce, winning his fourth term on en-US the Board by a 2.8 point lead over his chalen-US -en-US lenger. For her part, Ms. Bruce received 48.5 en-US percent -or 23,266 votes -of the 47,885 en-US votes cast for the seat. Both candidates en-US raised more than $16,000 and spent more en-US than $13,000 each according to campaign en-US finance records. en-US Also on the county stage, District 2 Counen-US -en-US ty Commissioner Anthony Louis Bonna en-US easily won over the broad field of challengen-US-en-US ers in the Republic primary race, capturing en-US 36.1 percent of the 20,984 votes cast. His en-US closest rival and four-year member of the St. en-US Lucie County Planning & Zoning Board en-US Bobby Hopkins won 27.3 percent, or 5,737 en-US votes. The rest were divided among Port St. en-US Lucie residents Dan Kurek and James Tayen-US-en-US lor, who won 2,257 and 5,401 votes, respecen-US -en-US tively. Campaign records show the two top en-US vote-getters raised the most money, with en-US Commissioner Bonna reporting $38,000 to en-US Mr. Hopkins $28,000. Mr. Bonna, who Gov. en-US Rick Scott appointed to the seat vacated by en-US former commissioner Tod Mowery amid a en-US marital infidelity scandal, will now face Port en-US St. Lucie Democrat Sean Mitchell this Nov. en-US 6.en-US For the County Court Judge Group 1 seat, en-US the majority of voters chose incumbent and en-US sitting Judge Daryl Ike Isenhower over en-US Fort Pierce challenger Fran Ross. Judge en-US Isenhower received 57.5 percent of the en-US 48,427 cast, while Ms. Ross won 20,562 en-US votes. Campaign reports show both contriben-US -en-US uted significantly to the donations raised for en-US their respective campaigns. Judge Isenhowen-US -en-US er added $40,000 of his own funds to the en-US more than $30,000 he received in donations, en-US while Ms. Ross chipped in $10,000 of her en-US own money to match the more than $10,000 en-US she received. en-US For the City of Fort Pierce District 1 City en-US Commission seat, the majority of voters en-US chose experience over younger challengers en-US and easily reelected incumbent Rufus en-US Butch Alexander III, 69, to his fifth term en-US on the Board. Commissioner Alexander en-US garnered 59.9 percent, or 1,377 of the total en-US 2,299 votes cast, while Henry Duhart, 24, en-US and Alonza Watkins, 39, earned 735 and 187 en-US votes, respectively. Both of the opponents en-US chose a door-to-door campaign strategy, en-US basing much of their campaign rhetoric on en-US being able to reach the younger generations en-US but raising very little money compared to en-US the incumbent according to campaign en-US records. Mr. Duhart reported just over en-US $2,000 in contributions, and Watkins en-US reported $50, while Commissioner Alexanen-US -en-US der raised $7,000. en-US In the race for the District 3 seat of the en-US Port St. Lucie City Council, incumbent and en-US Vice-Mayor Shannon Martin captured 64.6 en-US percent of the 28,372 votes cast, with the en-US rest divided between the dual challenge of en-US Fritz Alexandre and Andriana Chris Riera, en-US who received 5,149 and 4,887 votes, respecen-US -en-US tively. Vice-Mayor Martin also out-financed en-US the competition with her superior campaign en-US war chest of $30,000, while Mr. Alexandre en-US reported $2,000 and Ms. Riera, $2,200. en-US On the state level, District 83 Rep. Gayle en-US Harrell claimed a significant victory in her en-US bid for the last two years of retiring Sen. Joe en-US Negrons District 25 seat over challenger en-US Belinda Keiser, winning 57 percent of the en-US 23,240 votes cast in the Republican primary. en-US Campaign records show Ms. Keiser spent en-US more than $500,000 to earn 9,897 votes to en-US the 13,343 cast for Rep. Harrell, who spent en-US about $232,000. Ms. Harrell carried more en-US name recognition in the battle, along with en-US the endorsement of Senate President Ken en-US Pruitt and Sen. Negron himself. For her en-US part, Ms. Keiser had the backing of the Floren-US -en-US ida Chamber of Commerce, Floridas Police en-US Benevolent Association and the National en-US Rifle Association. Rep. Harrell will now face en-US Democratic opponent and Stuart physician en-US Dr. Rob Levy in the general election this fall. en-US For the District 83 seat Ms. Harrell is en-US vacating, Palm City environmental engineer en-US and businessman Toby Overdorf won over en-US Port St. Lucie victims right advocate and en-US small business owner Sasha Dadan, with 57 en-US percent of the 9,668 votes cast to Ms. en-US Dadans 42 percent in the Republican prien-US -en-US mary race. Mr. Overdorf will now go up en-US against Jensen Beach teacher and Demoen-US -en-US cratic candidate Matt Theobald for the seat en-US in the general election this November.en-US In the Democratic primary race for the en-US District 55 seat in the State House, the en-US majority of voters chose Sebring realtor en-US Audrey Asciutto over teacher Nicholas en-US Mrozowski, who received 180 and 81 votes, en-USrespectively. Campaign finance records en-US show Ms. Asciutto raised more than $9,000, en-US while Mr. Mrozowski raised less than en-US $3,000. Ms. Asciutto will now challenge en-US incumbent Rep. Cary Pigman for the seat en-US on Nov. 6.en-US The field was crowded in the Democratic en-US primary race for the State House District 84 en-US seat, with four candidates vying for the posien-US-en-US tion being vacated by retiring state Rep. en-US Larry Lee. Fort Pierce resident Delores en-US Hogan Johnson won 44.4 percent of the en-US 13,140 votes cast, followed by a close second en-US from Kim Johnson with 37.7 percent of the en-US vote. The remaining 17.8 percent was dividen-US -en-US ed between Robert Joseph (1,253 votes) and en-US Forest Blanton (1,089 votes). Ms. Hogan en-US Johnson will now face Port St. Lucie Repuben-US-en-US lican Mark Gotz for the seat this fall, who en-US won the Republican primary for the same en-US seat over Theresa Teri Pinney. Mr. Gotz en-US captured 51.1 percent, or 5,792 of the 11,320 en-US votes cast, while Ms. Pinney won 48.8 peren-US -en-US cent. en-US In the race for circuit judge seat of the en-US 19th Judicial Circuit Group, nonpartisan en-US candidates Robert Bob Meadows and Niren-US -en-US laine Smartt will now advance to the Nov. 6 en-US general election, having won 35.2 and 42.5 en-US percent, respectively, of the 47,979 votes cast en-US for the seat, which also included candidate en-US Louis Larsen who captured 22.2 percent of en-US the vote. en-US In this primarys Democratic race for the en-US District 18 seat of the U.S. House of Repreen-US -en-US sentatives, Palm Beach Gardens attorney en-US Lauren Baer had a landslide victory over en-US former U.S. Navy JAG officer and corporate en-US attorney Pam Keith, also of Palm Beach en-US Gardens, with 64.3 percent of the 10,663 en-US votes cast to Ms. Keiths 35.6 percent. Ms. en-US Baer will now face the winner of the Repuben-US -en-US lic primary for the same seat, incumbent en-US Rep. Brian Mast, who won 80 percent of the en-US 24,555 votes. The other 20 percent was en-US divided between Stuart resident Mark Freeen-US-en-US man and Dave Cummings of Port St. Lucie, en-US who won 2,492 and 2,387 votes, respectiveen-US -en-US ly. en-USPrimaryen-USFrom page 1

en-US 4 en-USIf a car dealer shows you his Invoice hes lyingen-USEarl Stewart is the owner and general en-US manager of Earl Stewart Toyota in North en-US Palm Beach. The dealership is located at en-US 1215 N. Federal Highway in Lake Park. en-US Contact him at en-USwww.earlstewarttoyota.com, en-US call 561-358-1474, fax 561-658-0746 or en-US emailen-US earl@estoyota.com.en-USBen-USack in 1968 when I first went into the en-US retail car business with my father, I en-US can remember asking him, What is en-US holdback? I was learning the business and en-US had been studying the invoices on new en-US Pontiacs that General Motors sent us when en-US they shipped a new car that we had ordered. en-US We had to pay the invoice immediately en-US when it was issued, sometimes even before en-US the car arrived at our dealership. In most en-US cases, it was our bank or GMAC who paid en-US GM and we borrowed the money from them to pay for the car. / en-USMy fathers answer to my question about en-US holdback was that it was an increase in the en-US amount of the invoice that we paid General en-US Motors which was not really part of the en-US price of the car. It was just an extra amount en-US added to the real price of the car and en-US included in the invoice. At that time, it was en-US 2% of the MSRP (manufacturers suggested en-US retail), so if a new Pontiac Bonneville had en-US an MSRP of $10,000 and a true cost of en-US $9,000, the factory invoice would be $9,200. en-US I asked my father, When do we get the en-US $200 back? He said, At the end of the en-US year. I asked him if they paid us interest on en-US our money and I can remember him en-US laughing loudly and saying no.en-US Of course my next question was why they en-US do that. He told me that the reason they en-US gave him was to help dealers sell their cars en-US for more money so that they didnt go en-US broke. He said that because they didnt get en-US their holdback money for such a long en-US period of time, they began to think of their en-US invoice as being the actual cost of the car. en-US General Motors felt that many dealers were en-US such poor businessmen that they might sell en-US their cars so cheaply that they would go out en-US of business. Now, because GM was kind en-US enough to hold back hundreds of thousands en-US of dollars of the dealers money (and pay en-US them no interest on it) but return the en-US money to them once a year, they could help en-US the dealers make a bigger profit and en-US maintain adequate working capital.en-US At that time, I thought this was the en-US biggest bunch of boloney I had ever heard en-US and I was sure that this was a scheme by the en-US manufacturers to keep a free float of en-US millions of dollars of their dealers money en-US under the guise of helping the dealers. I en-US asked my father why the dealers didnt en-US strongly object to this and he said that most en-US dealers actually liked the idea of holden-US -en-US back. When I heard that, I thought that en-US maybe GM and the manufacturers were en-US right about the dealers not being smart en-US enough to sell their cars for a reasonable en-US profit.en-US It took me a few more years in the en-US business before I understood what was en-US really going on with holdback. It was a no en-US brainer as to why the manufacturers liked en-US it, but at last I understood its attraction to en-US us dealers. Because we had to pay an extra en-US amount over the true price of the car and en-US not see that money for up to a year, we en-US began to think of the invoice as the true en-US price, even though it was inflated by en-US hundreds of dollars. Because all manufacen-US -en-US turers added holdback to all dealers en-US invoices, the net effect was to raise the price en-US of all cars to all buyers by the amount of this en-US holdback. I know this is a dirty word, but en-US its price fixing on the grandest scale. This en-US might have been something that Henry en-US Ford, Alfred Sloan, and Walter Chrysler en-US concocted while playing golf at Bloomfield en-US Hills Country Club outside of Detroit.en-US Another neat thing about holdback for us en-US dealers is being able to tell our customers en-US that we are only charging them X dollars en-US over invoice; or we can tell them that we en-US will sell them this car at invoice with no en-US profit to us at all! (Theres a sucker born en-US every minute) Dealers often have invoice en-US sales with copies of the invoice pasted on en-US the car windows. Who doesnt believe that en-US an invoice is the cost of the car? The truth is en-US in the semantic skullduggery Mr. en-US Customer, I solemnly swear to you that this en-US is the exact price that I paid the factory for en-US this car. In fact, heres a copy of the invoice. en-US Thats what the dealer paid the factory all en-US right, but its not what he paid the factory en-US after he got his holdback check in the en-US mailor, lets call a spade a spade, his en-US KICK-BACK.en-US You might be thinking, so were talking en-US about $200 more or less on a $10,000 car. en-US Who cares? Dont forget, that was almost en-US 50 years ago. Holdbacks have expanded en-US considerably and now instead of several en-US hundred dollars were talking several en-US thousand. Also, dealers no longer must en-US wait a year to get their hold back money en-US back. Now they get it back monthly. en-US Manufacturers even changed the names ON CARS en-USEARL STEWART REVERSE MORTGAGE WILMER FLORESFinance ProfessionalTAX FREE MONEYImprove Your Lifestyle And Enjoy RetirementCall for more information772-207-4599 LENDER See en-US en-US EARLen-US page 9

I en-US understand FPLs need to maintain their en-US lines, but am I the only one that sees how all en-US the trees are being destroyed? en-US I have had more than one experience with en-US Asplundh and FPL. They do not just trim en-US the trees. They come in and either cut the en-US middle of the tree or they cut the complete en-US side off the tree. They just trimmed my fifth en-US oak tree. I now have a one-sided Oak tree. en-US The other four they took down completely. en-US How sad that is something that has taken so en-US long to grow now has been butchered. Figen-US-en-US ure another way to solve your problem en-US before we have no shade. en-US I will say that FPL did compensate me for en-US the three small trees that were on my propen-US -en-US erty, not on an easement. I would rather en-US have had the trees to provide the shade so en-US my air-conditioner doesnt have to run all en-US the time.en-USToo big to succeeden-USSome political candidates are sending me en-US a mailing each week. This is really annoying en-US when one votes early. Also, the postcards are en-US gigantic. I guess it is to match their egos.en-USSpace Forceen-US en-US It is not a joke but President Trump wants en-US to create a Space Force! They would be en-US responsible for protecting our satellites and en-US material interest we have in space. The creen-US -en-US ation of a Space Force would only result in en-US China and Russia entering in an arms race en-US in space. China and Russia have proposed en-US an international treaty to ban the placement en-US of weapons in space. However, the United en-US States has rejected this offer every time it en-US has been brought up. I would hope that the en-US United States would join China and Russia en-US in banning the placement of weapons in en-US space. However, that is not the action that en-US the United States wants to take at this time. en-US Therefore, I will present arguments for en-US the rejection of Space Force as an indepenen-US-en-US dent branch of the military. First off, the en-US military is not in favor of creating a Space en-US Force. Secretary of Defense James Mattis is en-US opposed to the idea as is the majority of the en-US military leadership.en-US Creating another branch of the military en-US would be very costly. The Space Force would en-US want what goes with each independent en-US branch of the military. For example, the en-US Space Force would want their own college en-US like each branch has now. In addition, by en-US creating another branch of the military, the en-US military bureaucracy would be increasing at en-US a time when efforts are being made to make en-US the military a slim, trim fighting machine.en-US I would suggest that the Space Force be en-US part of the Air Force like the Marines are en-US part of the Navy. The Air Force has been en-US dealing with the responsibility of space thus en-US far. The world would best be served by puten-US -en-US ting forth the effort of keeping weapons out en-US of space. Creating a Space Force would be en-US viewed as a military threat to all nations. Let en-US ALL NATIONS work towards keeping space en-US free of weapons of any kind!en-USGive bicyclists more roomen-USSince there are improvements going on en-US up and down U.S. 1, couldnt the bicycle en-US lanes be widened to maybe six feet?en-US The law states motor vehicles need to give en-US a bicycle three feet of clearance. The existing en-US bike lane is barely three feet wide in most en-US areas. This is not enough room when vehien-US -en-US cles are doing 45 mph (or more often much en-US faster). Factor in cell phone usage, navigaen-US-en-US tion devices and any other number of disen-US -en-US tractions, and it makes for a dangerous ride, en-US particularly with higher posted speed limits. en-US I know as a motorist, if I am traveling in en-US the right lane and I approach a bicyclist in en-US the bicycle lane, in order for me to give the en-US bicycle proper clearance, I need to be almost en-US in the left lane. In fact, unless there is a vehien-US-en-US cle next to me in the left lane, my wheels will en-US be on or over the white dividing lines to en-US safely pass a bicyclist.en-US As a frequent bicyclist on this road, I can en-US tell you some motorists will do the same. en-US Then there are the motorists who dont give en-US an inch. This is why the lanes need to be en-US widened where possible. The new trees are en-US nice, how about making it safer.en-US'There ought to be a law'en-USWhen did the individual right become en-US more important than the rights of the genen-US -en-US eral population? In particular, regarding en-US loud music emanating from a vehicle, or en-US anywhere for that matter. Our courts deciden-US-en-US ed its unconstitutional to have noise limits? en-US Its OK for an individual to play music in the en-US car as loud as they like because its their conen-US -en-US stitutional right?en-US What about my constitutional right to not en-US have to listen to your music? What about the en-US disturbing the peace law? What about the en-US siren from an emergency vehicle I cant hear en-US because of someones right to play their en-US music as loud as they want? What about the en-USmusic playing in my car that I can no longer en-US hear because some jerk thinks me and en-US everyone else wants to hear the trunk raten-US-en-US tling from the pounding bass coming from en-US their car?en-US This seems like another case of more en-US rights for the criminal, and to hell with the en-US victims. How about to hell with the judge en-US who ruled this way and fire him or her and en-US get someone with more common sense.en-USOpen letter to all motorcyclistsen-USPlease be aware that the striped zones en-US between or beside the handicapped parking en-US areas are not parking spaces. Please be en-US thankful for the few extra feet that you can en-US walk.en-US Many handicapped vehicles are equipped en-US with lifts, ramps or swing-out chairs that en-US require this extra space. Any obstacle to en-US either side of the vehicle could be dangerous en-US or impossible to navigate.en-US The only two options are to wait until the en-US obstruction leaves or move the vehicle into en-US traffic lanes to load/unload a wheelchair. In en-US case of bad weather, this increases danger.en-USRobo callsen-USCan anyone tell me how to stop the incesen-US-en-US sant phone calls from robo calls? My phone en-US rings all day long. Calls from all over the en-US country. I get at least 10 a day. Its driving me en-US crazy. Sometimes I dont pick up and someen-US-en-US times I just answer turn on then off. It just en-US dont stop. Is there any way to stop these. I en-US cant even block these numbers because its en-US always a different number and from all over en-US the country. Sharks en-USVice-Mayor Shannon Martin asked City en-US Council Manager Russ Blackburn if any en-US additional offers on the property had come en-US in since the first reading of the ordinance en-US held Aug. 13. During both that meeting and en-US the meeting held June 27 when the Council en-US authorized Mr. Blackburn to draw up a puren-US -en-US chase and sale agreement for the $14.5 milen-US -en-US lion offer from RER Ventures, Hometown en-US News owner Vernon Smith had accused the en-US Council of rushing the decision and underen-US -en-US selling the property by relying on a 2016 en-US appraisal on the building. Ms. Martin took it en-US one step further during the recent meeting, en-US wanting to know if the second $14.5 million en-US offer by RTT Molecular DX had been updaten-US-en-US ed to change any of its terms. The majority en-US of the Council had viewed that offer as en-US financially unstable although it offered a en-US $11.5 million lump sump initially, signifien-US -en-US cantly larger than the RER Ventures $2.9 en-US million down payment.en-US en-USMr. Manager, have you received any en-US other offers or any proof of funds with en-US regard to any other offers as of this time en-US right now? she asked. en-US No Vice-Mayor, he responded. en-US Ms. Martin has consistently urged her felen-US -en-US low Council members to proceed with the en-US current offer on the table due to the financial en-US burden the high-tech building has continuen-US -en-US ally placed on the citys budget. Mr. Smith en-US insisted the city would still owe too much en-US money on the building after the sale, making en-US it a poor business decision. The city is curen-US -en-US rently paying the annual debt payment on en-US $57 million in non-taxable bonds for the en-US structure. en-US Im still begging you to be a little slow, he en-US said Aug. 13. I think the markets changing, en-US and Id just ask you to do that. I certainly en-US know that youre probably not going to get en-US all the money that you have outstanding on en-US the bonds, and that certainly is a concern of en-US everybody.en-US Port St. Lucie Communications Manager en-US Sarah Prohaska explained after that meeting en-US that the city would reissue the current bonds en-US its holding on the building as taxable ones en-US once it discounts the $2.9 million down payen-US -en-US ment and $4.1 million the city is kicking in en-US from its reserve funds. en-US If the City accepts the RER Ventures Inc. en-US offer of $14.5 million, we will issue approxien-US -en-US mately $52 million in taxable bonds, she en-US wrote in an email. In addition the city en-US intends to use the interest payments and the en-US final payment to reduce further the outen-US -en-US standing bonds of approximately $13.3 milen-US -en-US lion. The net present value savings on this en-US refunding will be approximately $4.6 milen-US-en-US lion.en-US Vice-Mayor Martin asked Mr. Blackburn en-US to describe how much money the building en-US was draining from the citys coffers on a en-US monthly basis. en-US Mr. Manager, can you also remind me en-US and the public of how much money were en-US spending a month on this building in operen-US -en-US ating costs? she asked.en-US About $130,000 or so a month, he en-US replied. en-US Councilman John Carvelli also asked the en-US city manager about the amount of taxes Port en-US St. Lucie had to pay on the building when it en-US came out of the court-appointed receiveren-US -en-US ship slightly more than a year ago. Mr. Blacken-US-en-US burns answer confirmed his suspicions.en-US So we had to absorb $400,000 in taxes en-US when we took ownership because we didnt en-US have the exemptions put in place in January en-US so we absorbed that amount as well, he said. en-US Were working to basically fix this problem en-US at this point. en-US No member of the public spoke during en-US the recent hearing, although Mayor Oravec en-US noticed the newspaper publisher in the audien-US -en-US ence and called him out.en-US Mr. Smith are you just going to sit out en-US there tonight? he asked. en-US I wish I had some buyers but I dont, he en-US responded from a distance. en-USWell you have until Sept. 10, Mayor en-US Oravec said, referring to the next meeting en-US when the City Council would make its final en-US determination on the RER Ventures offer.en-USVGTIen-USFrom page 1 en-USof the Port St. Lucie community. en-US 10 Save hundreds of dollars every week with coupons & discounts from our local advertisers! I en-USremember when I got my first laptop en-US back in the 1990s, how wonderful life as en-US going to be I imagined how easy it en-US would be when someone called while I was en-US on the road, I could just open the cover, tap en-US a few keys and have all the information I en-US needed at my fingertips. I also recall a failed en-US experiment with Via Voice (IBMs voice en-US recognition software) where I tried in vain en-US to write my column by speaking into the en-US laptops microphone.en-US The reality, unfortunately, came nowhere en-US near the fantasy.en-US First of all that old laptop of mine en-US weighed a ton. I had one of those carry bags en-US with the wheels and a handle that pulled en-US out and dragged it behind me everywhere I en-US went but that wasnt really the worst part. I en-US mean carrying tools around is always part en-US of a road warriors lifestyle; at least this en-US thing had wheels! No, the big problem was en-US how long the damn thing took to turn on.en-US You see with my Day Runner, all I had to en-US do is open the book to todays date and start en-US writing. It even had a little plastic book en-US mark thingy so I could open it to todays en-US date without looking. The only issue I had en-US with the Day Runner is every couple of en-US months I would run out of calendar pages en-US and have to go get new ones.en-US With my laptop it was downright en-US embarrassing! You think it takes computers en-US a long time to boot up today? You wouldnt en-US believe how long the wait was 20 years ago.en-US I can clearly remember trying to get into en-US my machine to look someones information en-US up and waiting and waiting and waiting. en-US And dont get me started on the battery life!en-US I learned a valuable lesson in those days en-US and it was to always keep my power cable en-US handy and be aware of the location of the en-US nearest outlet. (I even had a $30 inverter in en-US my car so I could plug in when I needed to). en-US The battery would always look like it had en-US enough power but, if I wasnt near an outlet en-US then Murphys law would kick in and the en-US battery would die right when I was in the en-US middle of some important task. en-US No, the whole using my laptop instead en-US of a Day Runner experiment was a dismal en-US failure. I found myself carrying my Day en-US Runner and lugging my laptop behind me.en-US Fast forward to now and Im very happy en-US to say I love living in the future! You may en-US have noticed these devices called Tablets en-US seem to be popping up all over the place en-US and recently I became the proud owner of en-US one. And with my tablet, those fantasies en-US that I had in the 90s of having all of my en-US data at my fingertips with my laptop have en-US all come true but with the tablet!en-US The first thing that Ive noticed is that en-US when I press the little button on the bottom en-US of my tablet (an iPad) its on. And I mean en-US instantly. There is no five-minute wait for en-US the thing to boot up and when it does wake en-US up I have access to everything! I can access en-US email, my address book and all of my notes en-US that I make while Im working and the en-US clever part is that the notes that I read have en-US usually been typed in at my home office on en-US my desktop computer. They just happen to en-US synchronize with my tablet so when Im out en-US in the field, everything that I worked on at en-US my main computer at home is available on en-US my tablet instantly I just turn it on and en-US after a few taps I have the information I en-US need. And when I type something into my en-US tablet, it synchronizes with my desktop en-US computer so I dont have to retype anything en-US when I get home.en-US Even the speech recognition software en-US works much better still not well enough en-US to just speak my column into existence but en-US excellent for quick notes.en-US The best part is when I really need en-US something on my desktop at home, I can en-US connect to my home machine with one of en-US several free remote desktop applications en-US and see my entire desktop on my tablet just en-US as if I was sitting in front of it. en-US It took 20 years but with my tablet I en-US finally have all the capabilities that I en-US thought I would have with my laptop. As in en-US past desperate situations, help is needed en-US from the general public and boaters to assist en-US in reporting sick and injured manatees.en-US As of August 18, there have been 554 en-US manatee mortalities in Florida, which en-US exceeds the total for all of 2017, and 81 of en-US those mortalities were from watercraft collien-US -en-US sions, added Janice Nearing, the clubs en-US Director of Public Relations.en-US Slowing down in manatee habitat and en-US obeying posted speed regulations is the best en-US way to reduce the risk of manatee injury and en-US death.en-US Save the Manatee Club distributes free en-US yellow banners that say Please Slow, Manaen-US -en-US tees Below. Boaters hold the banners up en-US high when they spot a manatee to warn en-US other boaters that manatees are present.en-US There must be a way for Floridians to en-US enjoy boating and recreating on our wateren-US -en-US ways without hurting or killing manatees, en-US said Dr. Katie Tripp, Save the Manatees en-US Director of Science and Conservation. No en-US one spends more time on Floridas waters or en-US better understands the factors that lead to en-US manatee strikes.en-US Dr. Tripp thinks that boaters themselves, en-US by becoming more proactive for manatees, en-US can head off the need for increased law en-US enforcement. Anyone whos getting behind en-US the wheel or handlebars of a vessel needs to en-US be responsible and know what theyre en-US doing.en-US We dont know anyone who intentionally en-US aims to injure manatees during a day of en-US boating, said Dr. Tripp. But terrible injuen-US -en-US ries and suffering occur nonetheless, and we en-US can do better.en-US Red tide is also a deadly danger to manaen-US -en-US tees.en-US Martin County adopted the term Lost en-US Summer in 2013 to describe the disaster en-US caused by discharges from Lake Okeechobee en-US into coastal communities, said Dr. Tripp. en-US Posted signs warned against swimming, en-US fishing, or otherwise coming in contact with en-US the water that was covered in guacamoen-US -en-US le-thick algae. The moniker was unfortuen-US -en-US nately applicable again in 2016 and now en-US again in en-US 2018.en-US On Florien-US-en-US das west en-US coast, red en-US tide has en-US killed nearly en-US 1,100 manaen-US-en-US tees over the en-US last 23 years, en-US and because en-US blooms now en-US occur so freen-US-en-US quently, they en-US are no longer en-US characteren-US -en-US ized as en-US unusual en-US mortality en-US events, said en-US Dr. Tripp. en-US The organen-US-en-US ism that causes red tide is naturally-occuren-US -en-US ring. The input of human-generated polluen-US -en-US tion into our coastal waters, which causes en-US that organism to bloom and wreak havoc, is en-US far from natural. The same is true for the en-US various algae blooms that have occurred in en-US the Indian River Lagoon in recent years, en-US resulting in the deaths of manatees, dolen-US -en-US phins, fish, and sea birds, and the loss of en-US tens of thousands of acres of vitally-importen-US -en-US ant seagrass.en-US Red tide acts as a neurotoxin, giving manen-US -en-US atees seizures that can result in drowning. en-US Sick, injured, or orphaned manatees should en-US be reported to the Florida Fish and Wildlife en-US Conservation, because they can often be en-US saved if rescued in time.en-US If manatees exposed to red tide can be en-US moved out of the affected area by trained en-US biologists and stabilized at a critical care en-USfacility, their prognosis is often very good, en-US said Dr. Tripp.en-US To report such animals or to alert the en-US FWC to any other hazardous conditions or en-US incidents affecting marine wildlife, call en-US 1-888-404-FWCC (3992). Nothing is frozen except en-US the meatballs, and I make them fresh every en-US two or three days. I use only organic proen-US -en-US duce, grass-fed meats and free-range, chicken-US -en-US en free of antibiotics. en-US As soon as Gloria and I entered the en-US charming spot, we noticed almost everyone en-US was drinking wine.en-US Of course we have wine, quipped Ms. en-US Fontanarosa. Were Italian.en-US Gloria and I instantly hit it off with the en-US chefs better half and thoroughly enjoyed en-US her sense of humor and charming Italian en-US accent. It was she that told us we simply en-US couldnt end our meal without trying her en-US homemade tiramisu (more on that later). en-US We began our dining experience with an en-US old tried-and-true favorite of mine and en-US something entirely new for both of us. For en-US an aperitivo (appetizer), we ordered Arancien-US -en-US ni al Piatto, rice balls stuffed with Bolognese en-US sauce and mozzarella cheese. Although Id en-US savored this delicacy before, I dont think Id en-US had them topped with this particularly en-US yummy sauce of ground beef, bacon, mushen-US-en-US rooms, carrots, celery, tomatoes, and Italian en-US seasoning (okay I admit vegetarians would en-US have to slide on this dish or ask for a differen-US -en-US ent topping, but well talk veggie options en-US later). For those new to this dish, rice balls en-US are tender morsels that are then passed en-US through the broiler to give them a unique en-US fusion of textures: soft on the inside and en-US deliciously crunchy on the outside. en-US We then ordered a soup that I dont recall en-US ever seeing on an Italian menu before, Toren-US -en-US tellini en Brodo (Meat filled tortellini in en-US chicken broth), although this simple English en-US description does nothing for the explosion en-US of flavor we both experienced for the first en-US time. In fact the word broth does no justice en-US to the savory liquid in which the huge numen-US -en-US ber of tortellini were floating. Towards the en-US end of the soup, I even began noticing en-US yummy bits of melted parmesan cheese. en-US When I asked Ms. Fontanarosa about it en-US because it didnt appear in the list of ingredien-US -en-US ents on the menu, she looked at me sort of en-US shocked. en-US Of course it has parmesan cheese, she en-US exclaimed. Were Italian -we put parmeen-US-en-US san on everything!en-US While we were still savoring the soup, she en-US came by carrying a platter of Crostini en-US Caprese (Garlic crostini with Prosciutto di en-US Parma, Mozzarella, Tomatoes and Basil) so en-US beautiful I had to ask what they were. en-US Crostini Caprese, she responded. The en-US Flower of Italy.en-US Truly they resembled little flowers colen-US -en-US ored like the Italian flag and have the same en-US basic ingredients of a caprese salad, minus en-US the prosciutto but juxtaposing the textures en-US of the soft mozzarella and juicy tomatoes en-US with the crunch of the crostini. Youll notice en-US here the menu items for the most part are en-US written in Italian, so if your grasp of the lanen-US-en-US guage is like mine -either very weak or en-US non-existent -not to worry. All the descripen-US -en-US tions that follow on the ample but not overen-US -en-US whelming list of entrees are in English. Chef en-US Luca also creates a few daily specials that he en-US lists on a whiteboard outside near the en-US entrance. en-US For our entrees, I ordered Risotto ai Fruiten-US-en-US ti di Mare (mussels, shrimp, scallops and en-US clams) while Gloria opted for the Scaloppine en-US di Pollo al Limone (a chicken breast topped en-US with a lemon-butter sauce), which was really en-US lemony! My main dish option (an Italian en-US take on Cajun jambalaya) showed you can en-US take the boy out of Louisiana but you cant en-US take the Louisiana out of the boy. Chef Fonen-US -en-US tanarosa emphasized diners will need en-US patience for this particular dish as he never en-US prepares anything ahead of time other than en-US his meatballs. en-US I make my risotto fresh to order, he said. en-US It takes 25 minutes. en-US While my plate piled high with shellfish en-US failed to disappoint, I did have questions en-US about the name of Glorias dish as it reminden-US -en-US ed me of a similar dish at other restaurants en-US known as chicken franchese.en-US Thats not an Italian name, and I dont en-US know where it came from, he grimaced. en-US This is the real name of the dish. en-US Chef Fontanarosa also laughed when he en-US told us how many people come in asking if en-US he makes Alfredo sauce. en-US It only exists in one place in Italy en-US [Rome], he said, where it was created by a en-US man for his pregnant wife who was tired of en-US eating simple fettuccini and pasta with no en-US sauce due to her weak stomach. And I dont en-US make it.en-US Anybody who likes history, should Gooen-US -en-US gle the history of Alfredo sauce, since most en-US Italians relate it to not being well enough to en-US eat anything with more flavor, and only en-US Americans ask for it in Italy. While it may en-US seem like most Italians, like Greeks, are caren-US -en-US nivores (remember the Big, Fat Greek Weden-US-en-US ding movie), vegetarians will definitely find en-USsome suitable choices here as well. While I en-US didnt try the Caponata Alla Catanese, the en-US sound of fried eggplant, caramelized onions, en-US carrots and celery and pine nuts in a sweet en-US and sour tomato confit tantalized my taste en-US buds. The Risotto al Funghi Porcini also en-US sounds yummy (Arborio Risotto with Porcien-US -en-US ni Mushrooms) and the Gnocchi al Pesto en-US and the Penne all Arrabbiata (penne pasta en-US with tomato sauce and red chili peppers) are en-US other potential vegetarian options. en-US For those new to Tiramisu, its a good en-US thing after such a meal that the Savoiardi en-US layers (ladyfingers) soaked in espresso and en-US filled with Ms. Fontanarosas homemade en-US Mascarpone cream are so light and airy. Its en-US almost like eating a mousse but with much en-US more flavor and texture. She insists, howeven-US -en-US er, that she adds a special, essential touch.en-US I make the Tiramisu with love and pasen-US -en-US sion, she explained. If you dont make it en-US with love and passion, it doesnt work.en-US If you like this Italian dessert as much as en-US we do, youll be glad to know something: en-US Hers works. en-US Corleone by Chef Luca is located at 8621 en-US S. We depend on the grips on our en-US clubs to control the club and to transmit to en-US the ball where it is to go. Grips also send en-US back to our brains information about how en-US well we struck the ball.en-US A few years ago I played with what had en-US to be the worst set of rental clubs ever. Only en-US a couple of clubs out of the 14 in the bag en-US had a grip that wasnt as hard as a rock and en-US as slippery as a fish. It made for a strange en-US round to say the least. en-US I constantly was afraid the club would fly en-US out of my hands. To prevent that, I gripped en-US the club too tightly, putting far too much en-US tension into my arms and body. I eventually, en-US just tried to hit different shots with the two en-US or three clubs that had a grip slightly en-US younger than I.en-US Todays grip market is huge. The number en-US of choices we golfers have to perfect our en-US connection with our tools is amazing. Grips en-US come in more colors and combinations than en-US Crayola can put in a box, as well as different en-US weights and different sizes.en-US We didn't always have all these choices. en-US In fact, there are few written records en-US regarding the history of golf grips. We can en-US assume that the shepherds who invented en-US the game, likely did not turn their crooks en-US upside down and wrap the bottom with en-US anything before hitting stones around the en-US hillsides of Scotland.en-US It is unclear when grip first appeared on en-US clubs, but we do know that a wool listing en-US was used in the 18th century. In to the 19th en-US century, this would be covered with en-US sheepskin before leather and then rubber en-US would take over in the 20th century.en-US Some golfers would apply chalk to their en-US grips to help them stay dry. Additionally, en-US olive oil, wax, pitch and varnish would be en-US used to help golfers better grip their clubs.en-US While grips last much longer today than en-US they did back when they were simple wool en-US listings or leather, they should still be en-US replaced about every 40 rounds. More often en-US if your hands sweat a lot or they are en-US constructed of a material that starts to break en-US down. Your grips should feel tacky in your en-US hand and should never get to the point en-US where they are hard or cracked. It's always en-US good to replace your entire set, keeping the en-US same feel with every club in your bag.en-US Many people do not know the imporen-US -en-US tance of getting the proper grip size or en-US being fit for your grip. When custom fitting en-US your clubs for shaft, shaft flex, loft, lie and en-US more, it is equally important to have the en-US right grip size. There are many grip sizes en-US available and you can even alter the en-US thickness of the grip during the installation en-US process.en-US A grip that is too small may cause en-US overactive hands, while one that is too large GOLF en-USJAMES STAMMER en-USGet a grip on your gameen-USSeeen-US en-US STAMMERen-US page 15

One good measure is that en-US when gripping your club, your middle and en-US ring finger should just about touch the palm en-US pad of your hand.en-US Between grip changes, you should wash en-US your grips frequently. Anyone who has en-US watched Fred Couples play, will notice that en-US he not only plays without a glove, but wipes en-US his grips clean with a moist towel before en-US every shot.en-US As you play, sweat and oils from your en-US hands are transferred onto your grips. If en-US you fail to clean then, your grips will en-US become slippery and difficult to hold onto en-US during your swing. Using just a towel en-US dipped in a soapy water solution will do the en-US trick. Dawn dish soap is great for cutting en-US through the hand oil and sweat that en-US accumulate on your grips.en-US In 1925 golf's original grip manufactured en-US was established by Elver Lamkin out of his en-US garage in suburban Chicago. His en-US hand-crafted, premium leather grips en-US quickly became the rage among golfers en-US looking for a consistent, comfortable, and en-US tacky grip.en-US In the 1960s, under the direction of en-US Elvers son Rovbert Lamkin, the company en-US began manufacturing leather and rubber en-US hybrid grips. Eventually the company en-US would move on to synthetic rubber, en-US providing a more affordable grip.en-US There is only one thing more afforden-US -en-US able than an affordable grip, and that would en-US happen to be a free grip. en-US Thanks to Lamkin, I am giving away en-US not just a grip, but an entire 13 grip set of its en-US latest grips to one lucky reader.
