While there are some exemptions en-US for specific businesses like golf courses and farms, en-US and there are a few fertilizers that are safe to use en-US during the summer, the general rule is to simply en-US avoid fertilizing for a few months.en-US The purpose of the ban is to protect the Indian en-US River Lagoon from the harmful excess nutrients en-US that get washed from your lawn during the rainy en-US season. The law also regulates what types of fertilen-US -en-US izer can be used the rest of the year.en-US St. Lucie County passed its ordinance in 2014. en-US The city of Port St. Lucie has a similar ordinance, en-US as does Fort Pierce. Both were passed in 2014.en-US Martin Countys ordinance took effect in 2011, en-US amended and strengthened in 2014.en-US While the various ordinances contain some difen-US-en-US ferences regarding exemptions, licensing, and speen-US -en-US cific fertilizer content, the general principles are en-US the same.en-US Through the end of September, do not fertilize en-US with any product containing nitrogen or phosphoen-US -en-US rous. The St. Lucie Tourism en-US office wants you to fix that by inviting en-US your friends and family from afar to Visit en-US St. Lucie and take some time to enjoy time en-US with your loved ones. Life is too short, and en-US goes by way too fast to take family and en-US those close to us for granted.en-US Visit St. Lucie has just launched a camen-US -en-US paign encouraging residents to Share en-US Your St. Lucie and invite family and en-US friends they havent seen in a while to en-US vacation here in our little slice of paradise. en-US Residents will begin seeing Share Your St. en-US Lucie ads on their social media feeds, on en-US online and on other digital platforms. en-US Once a resident clicks on the ad, they are en-US taken to the www.ShareYourStLucie.com en-US website and are encouraged to submit en-US their information to win weekly prizes en-US that include surf lessons, golf lessons, en-US kayak tours, gift certificates to local en-US restaurants and more. We wanted to take this data en-US and create an innovative, creative and en-US cost-effective campaign to capitalize on en-US this information, so the Tourism Office en-US launched the Share Your St. Lucie camen-US -en-US paign, stated Charlotte Bireley, director of en-US Tourism & Marketing for St. Lucie Counen-US -en-US ty.en-US The campaign not only incentivizes resen-US -en-US idents with great weekly prizes, but it also en-US creates a sense of pride of loving and en-US sharing where we live. Even en-US worse, you also are prohibited from even en-US taking that car dealer to arbitration unless en-US you write a demand letter first!en-US What is arbitration anyway?en-US The average person does not understand en-US what arbitration is, much less know that en-US they agreed to substitute this process for en-US their right to sue when they bought their en-US last car. Arbitration allows individuals that en-US are employed by an arbitration company to en-US decide who is right in a dispute, you or the en-US car dealer. Professional arbiters can be en-US retired judges or anyone that the arbitration en-US company decides is qualified. Because car en-US dealers use the arbitration company often en-US and because car dealers determine the en-US compensation to these companies, there is a en-US good chance that the arbitrators are en-US inclined to side with the hand that feeds it.en-US You cant even file for arbitration unless en-US you write a demand letter to the dealer en-US which must contain specific information as en-US prescribed by Florida statute 501.98. This is en-US a summary of that law:en-US Florida Statutes require that, at least 30 en-US days before bringing any claim against a en-US motor vehicle dealer for an unfair or en-US deceptive trade practice, a consumer must en-US provide the dealer with a written demand en-US letter detailing the name, address, and en-US telephone number of the consumer, the en-US name and address of the dealer; a descripen-US -en-US tion of the facts that serve as the basis for en-US the claim; the amount of damages; and en-US copies of any documents in the possession en-US of the consumer which relate to the claim. en-US Such notice must be delivered by the United en-US States Postal Service or by a nationally en-US recognized carrier, return receipt requested, en-US to the address where the subject vehicle was en-US purchased or leased or where the subject en-US transaction occurred, or an address at en-US which the dealer regularly conducts en-US business. If you would like to read the en-US detail of this law, you can access it online at en-US https://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Staten-US-en-US utes/2013/501.98.en-US If you hire a lawyer because you believe a en-US car dealer has taken advantage of you, en-US youre not eligible for reimbursement of any en-US legal fees unless you have sent the demand en-US letter exactly as described above. Therefore en-US most lawyers are reluctant to assist you en-US because they know that the fees they would en-US normally be entitled to are at riskboth en-US because of the arbitration requirement and en-US the demand letter.en-US What Ive described is just one more en-US reason why you should be extremely careful en-US when you buy or lease a car. In the back of en-US our minds most of us believe that when we en-US are doing business with a car dealer, or en-US anybody else, if we are taken advantage of en-US we have the right to sue to force the en-US company to make things right. This is not en-US true with 99.9 percent of car dealers. You en-US should realize this and be even more careful en-US when you purchase a car. Access my blog en-US for articles on every facet of doing business en-US with a car dealer. There are hundreds of en-US articles accessible in the archives of www.en-US EarlStewartOnCars.com. You will learn en-US never to go car shopping alone, get all en-US promises by the salesman in writing, spend en-US at least two weeks researching the purchase en-US of car, and always get at least three competien-US -en-US tive bids on the car youre buying, your en-US trade-in, and your financing. The Florida/USVI Poison en-US Information Center Jacksonville is offeren-US -en-US ing some tips to keep Floridians safe this en-US summer. en-US The summer season sees the biggest en-US boost in calls to poison control centers, en-US because people are enjoying the outdoors en-US and the kids are out of school, said Dr. Jay en-US L. Schauben, Director of the Florida/USVI en-US Poison Information Center Jacksonville. en-US This leads to an increased number of poien-US -en-US son exposures, especially for pool chemical en-US accidents, snake, spider, and insect bites, as en-US well as aquatic stings. en-US The poison control center staff want you en-US to remember these summer safety tips: en-US Pool Chemical Safety: Calls regarding en-US pool chemicals increase more than 70% in en-US the summer months. Ensure you are in a en-US well-ventilated area when using pool chemien-US-en-US cals. Follow the product instructions careen-US -en-US fully. Do not store chemicals where flamen-US -en-US mable items may mix with them (i.e. pool en-US chemicals and fertilizer). Never mix pool en-US chemicals because it could create a toxic gas. en-US Always keep pool chemicals stored up and en-US away from children. en-US Insect Repellent Usage: Calls regarding en-US insect repellent double during summer en-US months. Read and follow product instrucen-US -en-US tions carefully; some repellents are not en-US meant to be applied to the skin. Do not en-US apply onto a childs hands, eyes, mouth, or en-US cut/irritated skin; spray repellent onto en-US adults hands then apply to childs face. Do en-US not spray on childrens hands because they en-US tend to rub their eyes or mouths. Do not en-US use combination sunscreen/insect repellent en-US products. Sunscreen needs to be reapplied en-US every two hours, but repellent should not be en-US reapplied. DEET should not be used on en-US children younger than two months old. en-US After returning indoors, wash treated skin en-US with soap and water. en-US Snakes and Spider Bites: Snake and spien-US-en-US der bite calls increase more than 30% over en-US the summer months. Call the poison conen-US -en-US trol center at 1-800-222-1222 (or 911, if en-US unarousable, convulsing, or stopped breathen-US -en-US ing) if you believe you have been bitten by en-US one of the six venomous snakes of Florida: en-US coral snake, cottonmouth (water moccasin), en-US Eastern diamondback rattlesnake, copperen-US -en-US head, or canebrake (timber) rattlesnake. If en-US bitten by a snake, remove jewelry and tight en-US clothes, immobilize the extremity if possien-US -en-US ble, keep affected area at or below the heart, en-US and wash the area gently. DO NOT feed the en-US victim, make cuts or place ice on the bitten en-US extremity, or apply a tourniquet. If bitten en-US by a spider, call the poison control center en-US immediately. en-US Other Outdoor Hazards: Jellyfish and en-US other aquatic life bite and sting calls spike en-US nearly 40% during summer. At the beach, en-US bring a spray bottle with vinegar in it in case en-US of jellyfish stings. Call the poison control en-US center if youre stung for specific treatment en-US advice. Treat all wild mushrooms as poien-US-en-US sonous unless you are absolutely certain en-US they are safe to eat. The en-US psyllid acquires the bacteria when it feeds en-US on bacteria-infected plants, and the disease en-US spreads when a bacteria-laden psyllid flies en-US to a healthy plant and injects the bacteria en-US into it as it feeds. The en-US solution is easy contact your representaen-US -en-US tives about your issues of concern.en-US The current U.S. administration and conen-US-en-US gress needs to answer to us, their constituen-US -en-US ents: that is their job: to represent the peoen-US -en-US ple who elected them. They need to be en-US accountable to us and to make sure that en-US happens, we have to be part of the solution. en-US Environmental and consumer protection en-US issues affect all of us. The Consumer Proen-US-en-US tection Bureau has gone the way of Pruitts en-US Environmental Protection Agency --en-US neglecting or forgetting the most important en-US part of the agencies titles: Protection. They en-US have not been doing their job. en-US We need to tell them (via phone, fax, mail, en-US email or in person) what we expect of them, en-US ask them: Will you be a voice and a force en-US for protection for consumers and for our en-US environment? Will you be holding Town en-US Hall Meetings? If so, when, where? If not, en-US why not? Town Hall Meetings are where en-US representatives actually meet and converse en-US with their constituents. Does your represenen-US-en-US tative do that?en-US13 State Constitution en-US amendmentsen-USThe first two times I saw the amendments en-US published in a local newspaper, I read en-US through the article twice once increduen-US-en-US lously the second more studiously and en-US took notes to try to understand what was en-US being proposed to no avail.en-US The June 15, 2018 edition of the Homeen-US -en-US town News was the third publication Ive en-US seen. There is no understanding or reasonen-US -en-US ing behind these proposals presented as en-US they are, other than to confuse, obfuscate, en-US and trick voters into voting for some things en-US / rules no one wants, and no legislator wants en-US to be blamed for. This is an example of goven-US -en-US ernment at its worst.en-US I STRONGLY urge every voter to vote en-US NO on all 13 items. None of these need to en-US be elevated to the level of incorporation into en-US the states constitution, but should be en-US addressed individually by the legislature, en-US where each elected official must take a puben-US -en-US lic stand for or against each item. Vote en-US NO to the process which only serves to en-US benefit, via power and/or money, to a few, en-US and takes rights / power away from the peoen-US -en-US ple of the state of Florida.en-USWhy set up even en-US more new homes?en-USI find it ironic that the City Council of en-US Sebastian just agreed to increase the Equivaen-US -en-US lent Residential Unit (ERU) for double the en-US current rate without any proven statistics to en-US justify that increase. They claim that the en-US infrastructure needs to be repaired, in the en-US near future, then vote to add 500 new homes en-US to these storm drains they claim need repair.en-US As for the building of new homes in en-US Sebastian I am not aware of any follow up en-US on the inspection or relocation of any en-US Gopher Tortoises in my neighborhood en-US where several new homes have been built. en-US The contractors just came in with their bull en-US dozes and plowed all the foliage and trees en-US down. Now, Sebastian has approved zoning en-US for another 500 new homes. What are they en-US thinking? Drive down most streets in Sebasen-US -en-US tian and you will find many older homes for en-US sale. Some of these homes have been for sale en-US for months and/or years. Drive around and en-US you will see many vacant areas where develen-US -en-US opments were started and left unfinished. en-US We have many empty or nearly empty strip en-US malls and Sebastian is allowing new strip en-USPhoto courtesy of MaryAnn Ketchamen-USThe Inaugural Surf Paws: Hang 20 Presented by Dyer Subaru to en-US benefit the Humane Society of St. Lucie County packed the beach and drew a good field of furry contestants.   The ev ent took place en-USon Sat. From my perspective en-US the only ones who benefit from all this en-US needless construction are the construction en-US companies and the City of Sebastian. Maybe en-US it's time for the people we elected to repreen-US -en-US sent us give us a say in what they seem to en-US think is good for our community.en-USUse bats and en-US fish against pestsen-USThe rain has been good for mosquitoes. en-US But our first line of defense should not be en-US poisoning the environment.en-US Make sure there is no standing water in en-US the neighborhoods. Ponds can be stocked en-US with fish (e.g., Gambusia) that eat mosquito en-US eggs and larvae. en-US Put up a bat house. One bat can eat more en-US than 1,000 mosquitoes in one night. Poison en-US should be the last and little used option.en-USSomeone else's life en-US depends on you driving safeen-USDriving in Florida has added to my en-US peeves.en-US Making a stop at a "stop" sign means you en-US stop before the sign then proceed with cauen-US-en-US tion.en-US The rod on the left side of the steering en-US wheel is your turn signal. Most Florida driven-US-en-US ers don't know it exists.en-US To all our "disabled persons" with a parken-US -en-US ing identification permit you place on your en-US mirror: if you read it, it states "remove en-US before driving vehicle." Martin rose from 50-54 percent. St. en-US Lucie rose from 43-50 percent.en-US For grade 8 science, the statewide gain en-US was two points, from 50-52 percent.en-US Indian River tripled that improvement, en-US rising from 47-53 percent. Martin rose from en-US 54-57 percent. St. Lucie rose from 46-49 en-US percent.en-US The social studies numbers were less conen-US-en-US sistent. In civics, the statewide scores en-US improved from 69-71 percent. But Indian en-US River showed a five point drop, from 70-65 en-US percent. Martin showed an above average en-US increase, from 71-79 percent. St. Lucie en-US increased two points from 69-71 percent.en-US In U.S. history, the statewide scores en-US improved from 67-68, but Martin dropped en-US one point from 75-74 percent, still far above en-US the state average. Indian River increased en-US from 69-70, and St. Lucie increased one en-US point also, from 62-63.en-US We applaud the work of our teachers and en-US students, said Indian River County Superen-US -en-US intendent Dr. Mark Rendell. A years worth en-US of teaching and learning are not necessarily en-US represented in these test scores, but they are en-US the measure that the state uses. We do have en-US reason to celebrate several areas of accomen-US -en-US plishment. Overall, as a district, our scores en-US improved in English Language Arts, Math, en-US and Science. Some of the increases were sigen-US -en-US nificant. For example, both 5th Grade and en-US 8th Grade Science saw increases of six en-US points. Probably the most impressive was a en-US 14-point increase in Algebra 1, which put us en-US above the state average. Our Curriculum en-US and Instruction Department focused on en-US some of these areas and it has paid off.en-US In St. Lucie County, Superintendent E. en-US Wayne Gent attributed the growth to the en-US individualized support students receive. I en-US commend our teachers, administrators, and en-US staff, Superintendent Gent said. Overall, en-US the vast majority of our students are making en-US gains, and we are continuing our positive en-US trends which is a credit to our outstanding en-US staff.en-US The Florida Department of Education en-US analyzed the achievement gap between Afrien-US -en-US can American, Hispanic, and white stuen-US-en-US dents. Commissioner Pam Stewart said that en-US in grades 3-10, the percentage of African en-US American students passing the English Lanen-US -en-US guage Arts assessment increased by one peren-US -en-US centage point, while the percentage of Hisen-US-en-US panic students passing increased by two en-US percentage points. Both groups, Commisen-US-en-US sioner Stewart said, narrowed the achieveen-US -en-US ment gap with their white counterparts.en-US Commissioner Stewart said the percenten-US -en-US age of economically disadvantaged students en-US in grades 3-8 passing the Mathematics en-US assessments increased by two percentage en-US points, while African American students, en-US Hispanic students, and students with disen-US -en-US abilities each increased performance by one en-US percentage point. en-US In Algebra 1, Hispanic students increased en-US the percentage of students passing the en-US assessment by two percentage points. Ecoen-US -en-US nomically disadvantaged students increased en-US their performance by two percentage points, en-US and African American students and stuen-US -en-US dents with disabilities increased their peren-US -en-US formance by one percentage point.en-US In Geometry, Hispanic students increased en-US the percentage passing by four points. Ecoen-US -en-US nomically disadvantaged students increased en-US their performance by four percentage en-US points, and African American students en-US increased the percentage passing by three en-US percentage points.en-US For more information from the state en-US about the test results, visit www.fldoe.org.en-US accountability/en-US assessments/k-12-student-assessment/en-US results/2018.stml. Spreader en-US deflector shields are required when fertilizing en-US using rotary spreaders.en-US Martin Countys ordinance is even stronger, en-US requiring a 25-foot fertilizer-free buffer from all en-US water bodies.en-US Fertilizer may not be applied, spilled, or otheren-US -en-US wise deposited on any impervious surfaces. It is by no en-US means legal, and most golf purists frown on en-US the use of such a thing. This past weekend, en-US the United States Golf Association took en-US one, and we should be thankful for it. en-US The U.S. Open was held this past week en-US out on Long Island at Shinnecock Hills Golf en-US Club. In typical USGA fashion, the course en-US was difficult and penal to those who strayed en-US from the fairways, found bunkers or missed en-US the greens. In typical USGA fashion, there en-US were also some ridiculous things done to en-US the course all in the name of protecting en-US par.en-US Saturdays round began rather benignly en-US for those playing early. The breeze was en-US light, the air was cool and there was not a en-US cloud in the sky. Then lunchtime came and en-US it all went to hell.en-US The winds picked up and the course en-US began to dry out. Balls hit down the en-US fairways were getting too much roll and en-US winding up in the rough. And if you know en-US U.S. Open rough, you know what that does en-US to scoring.en-US Worse still, the greens began to dry out en-US and get crusty as some players put it. The en-US grass began to turn brown and putts began en-US to roll and roll and some even rolled off the en-US greens.en-US As the afternoon rolled on, things en-US continued to get worse. In an event where en-US par is considered a good score, just carding en-US a bogey on some holes became the quest. en-US Tony Finau and Daniel Berger started the en-US day 11 shots behind the leaders and were en-US fortunate to have made the cut. The pair en-US each shot 66 and at days end were atop the en-US leaderboard and playing in the final pairing en-US on Sunday.en-US How difficult was the afternoon? Rickie en-US Fowler shot 84. Dustin Johnson, the leader en-US by four shots entering the weekend en-US bogeyed six of his first eight holes. Even en-US Phil Mickelson was not immune to the en-US severity of the playing conditions, putting a en-US moving ball to keep it from rolling off the en-US green. Lefty wound up with a 10 on that en-US hole, and his round of 81 is his worst at the en-US U.S. Open. By days end, the entire field was en-US over par.en-US By design, the U.S. Open is intent on en-US being the toughest test in golf, both en-US mentally and physically. The USGA loves to en-US test the mental stability of the field by en-US setting up a course that will make you grind en-US out pars and bogeys, and even make you en-US angry. It has always been a test like no en-US other. en-US Many players complained about some of en-US the pin positions. As the day wore on, you en-US could tell that the USGA had made a mess en-US of a few holes with where the holes were en-US cut. The greens at Shinnecock Hills were en-US designed at a time when no one thought of en-US making them play this hard and roll this en-US fast. en-US After the round en-US however, the USGA en-US did something en-US surprising. They en-US listened and didnt en-US just sit back and en-US laugh at the players en-US struggling to play a en-US game close to golf as en-US we know it come en-US Sunday. Usually this en-US is where they really en-US put the screws to en-US everyone, sit back en-US and toast a glass to en-US the carnage.en-US Instead the USGA en-US watered the course. en-US They watered the en-US greens to keep them from truly becoming en-US browns. The course wasnt allowed to turn en-US into cement. They set pins in places where, en-US if the winds picked up again, you could still en-US hope to keep a putt on the green. They en-US made the course manageable.en-US Sunday rolled around and the course was en-US still tough, but it was manageable. It bit en-US those who hit loose shots or missed greens en-US and fairways. Thankfully, it rewarded good en-US shots and players had chances to hold en-US greens, make putts and move up the en-US leaderboard instead of waiting for some to en-US fall.en-US It was a great final round. Tommy en-US Fleetwood just missed a birdie at the last en-US that was for a round of 62. No one has ever en-US gone so low at a U.S. Open. Patrick Reed en-US charged up the leaderboard, making five en-US birdies in his first seven holes.en-US In the end we saw history. West Palm en-US Beachs Brooks Koepka became only the en-US seventh player to successfully defend his en-US U.S. Open title. His round of 68 came en-US thanks to a hot putter that saved his several en-US times on the back nine.en-US Lets hope that the USGA has learned en-US something from its mulligan. While we en-US want to see players tested, we dont want the en-US entire thing to fall apart into something not en-US even resembling golf. en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years. The history dates back almost en-US 8,000 years to rock paintings in Spain en-US depicting honey robbers getting honey en-US from trees while using smoke.en-US Honey, if stored properly, can almost last en-US forever. Honey found in Egyptian tombs en-US over 3,000 years old was still edible. The en-US Romans used honey to heal wounds from en-US battles. Hannibal used honey and vinegar to en-US feed his troop when they crossed the Alps. en-US During World War I, honey was used as an en-US antibiotic to bind the wounds of soldiers in en-US battle. The healing power of honey is being en-US studied and is becoming better understood.en-US Honey bees are essential to life on earth. en-US It has been projected if all honey bees were en-US to perish, in four years the food supply on en-US earth would be in serious trouble.en-US There are more than 300 varieties of en-US honey and, here in Florida, we are fortunate en-US to have access to many different types of en-US honey. en-US Blueberry honey has the highest en-US antibacterial properties, and buckwheat en-US honey is high in antioxidants and cleanses en-US the liver. Eucalyptus honey is good for your en-US respiratory health. en-US Honey is antibacterial and antiseptic. en-US Raw, organic honey contains hydrogen en-US peroxide that is released when it comes into en-US contact with moisture. Raw honey as a en-US sweetener doesnt cause the blood sugar to en-US spike. It allows a much healthier gradual en-US increase in blood sugar levels. And we only en-US need a teaspoon of honey to make a en-US difference. en-US As a chef, it is really nice to use an en-US ingredient to cook with that is healthy for en-US you and also tastes great. en-US 17 en-USSen-USometimes, the small places are easiest en-US to overlook, particularly when theyre en-US off the beaten path or more than a few en-US minutes off the interstate. My wife Gloria en-US and I had only once or twice driven up U.S. en-US 1 from Sebastian to Melbourne and only en-US vaguely remembered the highway skirting en-US the eastern edge of the Indian River and en-US being able to see across to the barrier island. en-US Something told me the area held a special en-US charm, and we finally got to experience that en-US when we spent a recent weekend at Capt en-US Hirams Resort nestled along the western en-US shore of the Indian River Lagoon. en-US Although there are other places to lodge en-US in Sebastian, Capt Hirams is one of only a en-US very few that actually have rooms overlooken-US -en-US ing the enchanting waterway, where we en-US enjoyed awesome sunrises on both mornen-US -en-US ings from our balcony. Our room lay just a en-US minutes walk from the Sandbar Beach Club, en-US a little bit of the Bahamas and a slice of the en-US Caribbean wedged in the northeast corner en-US of Indian River County. This open-air en-US tropical complex is one massive beach party en-US for those who love the coast, and it takes on en-US a whole new sizzle in the evenings with its en-US nightly entertainment. There are even a en-US couple of tables and stools down in the en-US shallow part of the Lagoon for those who en-US just cant seem to drag themselves out of the en-US water long enough for a drink or snack. It en-US was there at Capt Hirams Adventure Center en-US that we checked out our tandem kayak for a en-US short paddle in the river our first morning en-US (included with the resorts $5 per person, en-US per night resort fee, along with bicycles and en-US paddleboards). The fascinating thing about en-US kayaking off the coast of Sebastian is that en-US kayakers can actually choose a destination. en-US This part of the Indian River Lagoon is en-US dotted with numerous sandy islands perfect en-US for a picnic or overnight camping. Although en-US Gloria is not much of a kayaker (I introen-US -en-US duced her to the sport in Miami many years en-US ago), we did manage to make it to the closest en-US islet, locally referred to as Shipwreck Island, en-US probably due to at least one of the derelict en-US vessels we noticed cast upon the glittering en-US white sand. We briefly stepped ashore for en-US photographs before making the short paddle en-US back to the resort. en-US The most charming part of the Sebastian en-US waterfront is its extreme walkability. This is en-US one of the very few non-urban places where en-US weve been able to park the car for the en-US weekend and forget it. Most of Sebastians en-US downtown area attractions are within easy en-US walking distance. Early the first morning en-US after photographing the sunrise, I headed en-US out walking on Indian River Drive in both en-US directions to see what was within easy reach en-US of the resort. Of course I passed several en-US waterside restaurants featuring massive en-US decks overlooking the tranquil waterfront, a en-US handful of public piers and decks extending en-US out over the water and some very unique en-US sculptures and monuments around en-US Riverview Park. Mel Fishers Treasures en-US Museum & Gift Shop lay only a few blocks en-US away, a small but fascinating tribute to the en-US man who helped put the treasure in en-US Treasure Coast. I also passed by Earls en-US Hideaway Lounge & Tiki Bar, a hugely en-US popular open-air spot with the motorcycle en-US crowd, seemingly day and night. en-US After freshening up from our morning en-US exploration, we headed back to the Advenen-US -en-US ture Center to pick up our tickets for Capt en-US Hirams River King Dolphin Watch Cruise. en-US Now you really cant force wildlife to appear en-US on command, but this tour of the Indian en-US River and the Sebastian Inlet lived up to its en-US name and more. Not only did we see en-US multiple pods of dolphins and a sea turtle, en-US but we actually came upon a herd of en-US manatees (shockingly in mid-June!) en-US frolicking and cavorting near one of the en-US islands. The tour took us within site of the en-US Sebastian Inlet State Park where we saw en-US motorhomes and camping trailers parked en-US on the shores of the Lagoon, and close en-US enough to the A1A Bridge over the inlet to en-US take pictures. Although it was a mid-day en-US cruise, the wind blowing through the en-US covered vessel kept us comfortably cool, and en-US we both agreed the two-hour River King en-US was one of the longest such water tours we en-US have experienced. en-US One of the most amazing things for us in en-US Sebastian was the variety of water views in en-US almost every direction. We had breakfast en-US every morning at the resorts Blackfins en-US Riverfront Grill, where we gazed out at the en-US harbor and Shipwreck Island in the en-US background. The restaurant is open for en-US three meals a day, and meals are also served en-US in the afternoons and evenings at the en-US Sandbar Beach Club.en-US Our first evening in Sebastian we dined at en-US the Mo-Bay Grill, a little piece of Jamaica en-US plopped down into the heart of Sebastian. en-US Owner Wesley Campbell cut his culinary en-US teeth on the island of his birth before en-US making a name for himself in Washington en-US D.C. for his personal take on Jamaican en-US cuisine. Named after his hometown of en-US Montego Bay, the restaurant offers a wide en-US variety of cuisine, both Jamaican and en-US otherwise, all accompanied by views of the en-US river through massive windows. We started en-US off with Green Herb Steamed Mussels as an en-US appetizer, whose tomato and garlic broth en-US was so savory we dipped the garlic toast in en-US it. While Gloria ordered one of our favorites, en-US Oxtail Stew, I ordered the Jerk Stuffed en-US Chicken Breast, filled with sauted mushen-US -en-US rooms and spinach. Mr. Campbells recipe en-USfinally helped me overcame my fear of the en-US Scotch bonnet peppers and allspice that give en-US jerk spice its kick. Mo-Bays take on the en-US popular brown sauce was truly tasty, and the en-US sweet heat only served to compliment the en-US poultry. Both dishes were served with a en-US unique combination of sauted broccoli, en-US cabbage, carrots and green beans. For en-US dessert, we shared one of the best slices of en-US coconut pie Ive had outside of the Deep en-US South. en-US The next afternoon after our cruise, we en-US walked down to Squid Lips Overwater Grill en-US for a late lunch. I had noticed this unique en-US eatery during my early morning walk, en-US perched between two piers on pilings above en-US the river. What makes it even more special is en-US that its open on three sides to the elements, en-US so when we sat down at the table, we looked en-US over the wall of the restaurant and saw en-US catfish swimming below. Even though we en-US saw no way to really air condition the place, en-US the ceiling fans and cross breezes from the en-US north, south and east kept us comfortably en-US cool. Here we started out with the savory en-US Smoked Fish Dip, accompanied by the en-US restaurants own yummy Pineapple Coconut en-US Bimini Bread (our server Anita offered us en-US more, but I knew better or Id never finish en-US my flounder stuffed with lobster/crab meat en-US dressing. For dessert we en-US shared a piece of Mikes Key Lime Pie, en-US probably the most decadent form of this en-US dessert Ive ever eaten. en-US For lunch the next day, we headed just a en-US few steps away to The Crab Stop, a new spot en-US on the river thats an outgrowth of a en-US Downtown Vero Beach restaurant of the en-US same name. en-US Here we dined on the shady, open-air en-US deck overlooking the water, beginning our en-US experience with Fried Snow Crab, a en-US steaming chunk of the Alaskan crustacean en-US that is breaded and deep-fried before en-US serving. For an entre, Gloria opted for the en-US Scallop Snack Pack, a savory bowl of en-US steamed scallops, shrimp and boiled en-US red-skin potatoes, which we found to be en-US absolutely scrumptious. I ordered the en-US unique Caribbean Seafood Rice, the owners en-US take on a Cajun jambalaya with a similar en-US kick, a mixture of shrimp, sausage and crab en-US meat served in a grilled pineapple. I also en-US sampled one of the restaurants famed garlic en-US crabs and now know why theyre one of the en-US most popular dishes. For dessert, we en-US munched on corn fritters topped with en-US powdered sugar, which were very similar to en-US beignets, another of my New Orleans en-US favorites. en-US Of course, you cant leave Sebastian en-US without seeing the relics pulled off the en-US nearby sea floor by one of the worlds most en-US famous shipwreck salvagers, Mel Fisher. en-US Now run by his granddaughter, this small en-US but very interesting museum is dedicated to en-US his lifes work of uncovering the treasure and en-US relics from Spanish vessels on the bottom of en-US the ocean. Here you can actually see gold en-US and silver coins and relics from the 1715 en-US Fleet that sank during a hurricane off the en-US Sebastian Inlet. Youll also find Colombian en-US emeralds and gold and silver coins minted en-US during the time of the Conquest, with some en-US relics even available for purchase. Be sure en-US and watch the 20-minute introductory video en-US that describes the treasure hunters early life en-US and his success in raising up the treasure en-US from Nuestra Seora de Atocha, his most en-US famous discovery of a vessel that sank in en-US 1622 west of the Florida Keys. en-US Shortly before leaving town our final day, en-US we hopped in the car and drove to the en-US Village Square, a unique shopping and en-US dining complex on the west side of U.S. 1 en-US near Main Street. Here Gloria browsed the en-US unique jewelry and clothing at Addicted 2 en-US Stuff, where she found bought a blouse and en-US a handmade bracelet, both at very reasonen-US -en-US able prices. en-US Weekend Wanderer is written by en-US award-winning travel and feature writer en-US Donald Rodrigue. They en-US should also be brought indoors or secured en-US close to the house. With a few common en-US sense actions, you can help save your en-US valuable outdoor belongings. I will have en-US more hurricane tips for your yard in en-US coming articles!en-US Squirrels and raccoon can be a common en-US sight in most gardens. These cute but en-US sometimes mischievous critters can be fun en-US to watch but they can also be a menace if en-US you keep your trash outdoors. en-US The common raccoon is the all too en-US familiar masked bandit that can be found en-US throughout most of the U.S. Raccoon can en-US be found almost anywhere water and food en-US is located and their range extends almost en-US anywhere in the United States. These furry en-US mammals are about the size of a medium en-US sized dog and as the mask implies, they love en-US to borrow stuff from your yard. Like man, en-US raccoon have five toes and it uses the whole en-US sole of their feet to walk, just like us. Their en-US hands are remarkably agile and they can en-US perform many of the same tasks as we do en-US like opening a zipper or even removing a en-US shoestring from a shoe. en-US Raccoon are survivors and warriors. en-US They can live and adjust when their woods en-US are cut down for development or they will en-US adapt if you fill in their favorite watering en-US hole. These cute creatures love garbage cans en-US and will almost without a doubt get your en-US trash before the trash man does. Your best en-US defense is to keep your trash in the garage en-US or build a special locking (and I mean en-US locking) structure to store the cans in. en-US One of the most enjoyable sights to see is en-US a family of newborn raccoon playing in en-US your yard. These cute fuzzy balls are just en-US like kids in the fact that they want to touch en-US and explore everything. The raccoon mates en-US once a season and can produce a litter of en-US anywhere from two to seven cubs in a litter. en-US The male raccoon only stays around about en-US a week and then he is off to find another en-US mate. The female raises the litter and if you en-US watch the behavior, you will soon see that en-US they are actually very good mothers. en-US Raccoon have a life expectancy of about en-US five years in the wild and can live as long as en-US 20 years in captivity. Many people rescue en-US orphaned baby raccoon and keep them as en-US pets until they are able to be again released en-US into the wild. en-US Squirrels are another common sight in en-US most yards throughout Florida. This animal en-US is very special in that it has well adapted to en-US being around man. They can live on both en-US natural foods and handouts. Feeding these en-US cute creatures is an enjoyable pastime for en-US many people while others curse their en-US presence because they love to raid your bird en-US feeder. The best defense is to feed the en-US squirrels separately while also purchasing a en-US squirrel-proof bird feeder.en-US What makes these fuzzy animals so en-US famous is their ability to put the most en-US trained gymnast to shame. This animal can en-US amaze and entertain us with its ability to en-US walk the tightrope and jump from tree to en-US tree with amazing accuracy and agility. en-US They are very smart creatures as they en-US usually figure out how to override the en-US mechanism of most squirrel proof bird en-US feeders over a period of time. en-US The squirrels diet is varied and can en-US include anything from nuts (their favorite) en-US all the way to pizza. These amazing en-US creatures have adapted well to our own en-US eating habits.en-US The most common death for a squirrel is en-US not predators or old age; its being hit by a en-US car. If a squirrel survives his first year he en-US will probably live about another five years en-US before he dies. Squirrels in captivity can live en-US as long as 20 years.en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape.
