LUCIE -The City Council voted en-US unanimously May 21 to provide the St. Lucie en-US County Safe Kids Coalition a parcel of land at the en-US Ravenswood complex off Prima Vista Boulevard en-US to build its planned Safety Childrens Village.en-US Strategic Plan Coordinator Kate Parmelee recen-US-en-US ommended Track A of the 4.9 acre property locaten-US -en-US ed just west of Airoso Boulevard due to the infraen-US -en-US structure already available on or near the site. en-US The Safe Kids Coalition is proposing to build en-US and implement a Childrens Safety Village, a freeen-US-en-US standing, comprehensive safety education experien-US-en-US ence and campus that will help reduce unintenen-US -en-US tional and preventable injuries for children ages en-US zero to 19, she said. The coalition has been seeken-US -en-US ing a partnership with the city in the creation of en-US this village through the donation of real property en-US from the city to construct the village and move en-US forward with the plan in cooperation with a numen-US -en-US ber of stakeholders. The Ravenswood complex is a en-US ideal location: It has an existing fire station and a en-US swimming pool and all the elements of a safety vilen-US -en-US lage constructed to help reduce costs of the overall en-US operation of the village.en-US Councilwoman Stefanie Morgan said she and en-US several others backing the project had visited a en-US similar complex in Georgia about a year ago, en-US admitting the local proposal had gotten bogged en-US down in the interim. en-US Were kind of at a standstill until we have a en-US location, she said. Weve had architects and genen-US -en-US eral contractors that have been involved, and its at en-US a point that we cant keep going back to them en-US PORT ST. LUCIE -Neighborhoods, en-US USA recently named the citys Neighen-US -en-US borhood Improvement and Community en-US Engagement program the best neighen-US -en-US borhood program in the country. en-US Port St. Lucie Neighborhood Services en-US Director Carmen Capezzuto representen-US-en-US ed the city May 26 at the NUSA national en-US conference in Birmingham, Ala. where en-US he accepted the First Place award for the en-US citys physical revitalization and beautien-US-en-US fication efforts. Mr. Capezzuto launched en-US several neighborhood improvement en-US pilot projects in 2016 as part of the en-US newly formed Neighborhood Services en-US Department that formally evolved into en-US the NICE program the following year. en-US Our residents should be proud that en-US Port St. Lucie has been nationally recogen-US-en-US nized for making our city more neighen-US -en-US borhood-friendly, he said. The NICE en-US program has helped Port St. Lucie take en-US on the challenges of our history and has en-US turned them into a roadmap for prosen-US-en-US perity.en-US Mr. Capezzuto has coordinated en-US numerous neighborhood meetings since en-US the programs inception to help galvaen-US-en-US nize support for neighborhood naming en-US projects and other initiatives. Port St. en-US Lucie residents have helped the city en-US choose formal names for 17 neighboren-US -en-US hoods to-date, beginning with the Canal en-US Pointe last July. His department has also en-US undertaken the decorative wrapping of en-US utility boxes scattered across the city en-US under the auspices of the NICE program en-US during the same time period, inviting en-US local artists of all ages to participate. The en-US Neighborhood Services Department en-US director, who began with the city in en-US 2001 while doing his undergraduate en-US work at Florida Atlantic University, en-US believes his biggest success was seeing en-USCouncil chooses site for en-US Childrens Safety Villageen-USCity en-US earns en-US national en-US acclaimen-USProperty at Ravenswood en-US complex offered to St. Lucie en-US County Safe Kids Coalitionen-US NICE program named en-US best neighborhood en-US program in the nationen-USBy Donald Rodrigueen-USFor Hometown Newsen-USBy Donald Rodrigueen-USFor Hometown Newsen-USSeeen-US en-US VILLAGE en-US, page 2en-US Seeen-US en-US ACCLAIMen-US page 7

I know its en-US something that staff has worked on diligenten-US -en-US ly, and having a central location to be able to en-US educate on safety is going to be important as en-US the city continues to grow.en-US For his part, Councilman John Carvelli en-US expressed some concerns about the use of en-US the Ravenswood property to Interim City en-US Attorney James Stokes due to some deed en-US restrictions and a reversion clause put on en-US the land by the General Development Coren-US -en-US poration, the original developer of the city.en-US Because number one, it says [it must be] en-US the community center, he said. That was en-US my only worry: If GDC didnt exist anyen-US -en-US more, what are some things that could en-US occur?en-US Interim City Attorney James Stokes en-US admitted the topic could use some more en-US research. en-US This is something that well have to look en-US at closer: There are a lot of questions, he en-US responded. GDC no longer exists, so we en-US dont know who those flow to, if anybody. en-US The question is, will that right revert back to en-US us when GDC ceased to exist because there en-US is no successor organization out there? It is en-US something were going to have to spend en-US some more time on.en-US Mayor Gregory Oravec attempted to allay en-US any fears, saying for him the matter was en-US purely academic.en-US I think you might make an argument en-US Mr. Stokes that, based on the settlement en-US with the city, we ended up becoming the en-US successor in some shape or form anyway, en-US he said. And then more than, I think this is en-US a community center. Ravenswood was there en-US with the pool for a long time, and it was a en-US community center, and this is a community en-US center. Its just one geared to a more specific en-US purpose.en-US Mayor Oravec did ask for clarification on en-US the length of the lease option, while Vice en-US Mayor Shannon Martin said she would supen-US-en-US port the idea of an exclusive lease for the en-US Safe Kids Coalition but wanted to know en-US how the organization planned to proceed if en-US the Council approved it. en-US Ms. Parmelee emphasized that the Counen-US-en-US cil itself would need to determine the length en-US of the lease, and Councilwoman Morgan en-US told her fellow Council members that funden-US -en-US ing for the construction and operation en-US would be raised through a grass-roots camen-US-en-US paign. en-US I think in the discussion that weve had en-US we were saying a year to 18 months max, en-US the latter said. As far as fund-raising and en-US all, a lot of it is through sponsorships. Its a en-USgreat plan, and Im sure that the Safety Vilen-US-en-US lage would come back with another presenen-US -en-US tation to show the next step. It was just geten-US -en-US ting the property was such difficulty; now en-US that they can call somewhere home, its realen-US -en-US ly full speed ahead.en-US Mayor Oravec agreed with the lease perien-US -en-US od since there were no competing organizaen-US -en-US tions asking for the property.en-US I think Im comfortable with 18 months, en-US he said. This site has been sitting fallow, en-US and this would be a great use.en-US Mayor Oravec insists that swimming lesen-US -en-US sons be a priority at the new Safety Chilen-US -en-US drens Village because drowning has been a en-US leading cause of premature death in area en-US children. en-US Councilwoman Morgan agreed, saying en-US swimming safety was a critical component en-US of the Georgia facility she visited.en-US So I think I feel the same way, she told en-US the mayor. en-US Its a top priority. en-USVillageen-USFrom page 1

It only takes about en-US two-and-a-half or three hours at en-US the most to play, so youre in and en-US out real quick.en-US Mr. Huffines has been the managen-US -en-US er at the club for the last six years, en-US and he said the relaxed environment en-US is great. There is no driven-US -en-US ing range, but we have a hitting net en-US and we have chipping and putting en-US greens so we do have a practice area en-US and thats a nice area.en-US The th Hole is a small restauen-US -en-US rant with good food, Mr. Huffines en-US added, and it is managed by an outen-US -en-US side company. All of a sudden, your en-US red check-engine light comes on! What are en-US you supposed to do? You are hundreds of en-US miles away from home and it is very en-US unlikely that you will find dealers service en-US departments for your make of car open on en-US Sunday. Should you keep on driving? Your en-US only alternative under these conditions is en-US to try and find a motel for the night and en-US find a dealer the next morning.en-US Unfortunately, the answer is that you en-US should not continue to drive the vehicle any en-US further than you absolutely have to. The en-US problem that caused the check engine light en-US could be any one of hundreds. Potentially, it en-US could be a very serious problem that could en-US be made more serious (and more expenen-US -en-US sive) by driving the car. It could also be en-US something so inconsequential as you failed en-US to twist the gas cap tightly enough the last en-US time you filled the tank. I have never en-US completely understood why car manufacen-US -en-US turers dont enhance the warning system to en-US differentiate between small problems that en-US can wait and those that could be cataen-US -en-US strophic. What a shame it would be to ruin en-US a familys vacation because they failed to en-US screw down their gas cap tightly or some en-US other minor problem that could have en-US waited weeks to address! My guess is that en-US the reason manufacturers do not enhance en-US their check engine light computer system is en-US simply because of the increased cost. Ill bet en-US that the cost of a motel overnight would be en-US a lot more than the manufacturer would en-US have had to spend to make the stay en-US unnecessary.en-US The vast majority of the time the check en-US engine light comes on, it is not serious en-US enough to rush to your dealer. The problem en-US is that you cant say for sure if this is one of en-US those times. In fact, the service advisors in en-US many dealerships are so used to check en-US engine lights coming on for minor en-US problems like loose gas caps that they often en-US mistakenly advise customers not to worry en-US about it and to bring the car in when you en-US get a chance. This works 90 percent of the en-US time, but that 10 percent when it is serious en-US can be very expensive. In fact, if the car is en-US under warranty and you continue to drive en-US the car when the check engine light comes en-US on, you could void your warranty. If your en-US check engine light comes on, pull over to a en-US safe place and check to be sure your gas cap en-US is screwed on tightly. That is the problem ON CARS en-USEARL STEWART en-USSeeen-US en-US EARLen-US page 9

The en-US writer asks why his neighbor mows the lawn en-US so early in the AM, sometimes at 7:30 even. en-US The reason people do outside chores early in en-US the morning is because it is too hot in the en-US late morning and afternoon. Try mowing en-US the lawn at 7:30 in the morning, then the en-US next time try doing it at 2:00 PM. You will en-US quickly find out earlier is better, before the en-US sun is burning high overhead. You should en-US be happy your neighbor is mowing at an en-US early hour as opposed to having knee-high en-US grass in his yard.en-USDiscounts for serviceen-USI was waiting in line to pay for some meren-US -en-US chandise the other day when the customer en-US ahead of me asked if they gave discounts to en-US retired law enforcement officers. The clerk en-US replied, Yes, we give fifteen percent disen-US -en-US counts to Police, Fire Fighters, and Veterans en-US current and retired. He was given the disen-US -en-US count and thanked the clerk. When I was en-US checking out I asked if they gave discounts en-US to teachers. The clerk quickly told me no. en-US The person standing behind me in line en-US commented that teachers should be includen-US -en-US ed in the list for discounts especially in this en-US day and age.en-US Why arent teachers given the same en-US respect, status or privilege as law enforceen-US -en-US ment, fire fighters, and veterans? They en-US touch the lives of all children and help shape en-US them into future adults. They are and have en-US been one of the most important contribuen-US -en-US tors in making America the Nation it is en-US today. They certainly dont get wealthy in en-US their profession. I hope and pray corporaen-US -en-US tions and business owners reconsider who en-US they include on their list of those they feel en-US deserve the perk of a discount for their years en-US of service in helping shape the youth and en-US future of our country.en-USAnother approachen-USYes, cutting the grass that early is inconen-US -en-US siderate and ignorant. Early morning cuten-US -en-US ting damages and weakens the grass and en-US rusts the equipment. What can be done? en-US Report him/her to Code Enforcement, en-US HOA, or local PD most have noise/disturen-US -en-US bance ordinances. You will need documenen-US -en-US tation for a lawsuit. This en-US person may need a mental health elavuation en-US (Baker Act). Also, consider installing the en-US tallest fence possible along the adjoining en-US property lines and buy a boxfan to provide en-US 'white noise.' Appealing directly to the bully en-US or their spouse won't work she probably en-US doesn't want him around either. I also live en-US next to the neighborhood bully family love en-US the fact they have installed an illegal, wired en-US utility building, a driveway less than 2 ft en-US from the property line, done their own roof en-US work and are completely ignoring the counen-US -en-US ty fertilizer ban code enforcement is only en-US one anonymous phone call away. In en-US fact, many people who overdose do so in en-US public areas. Overdoses can happen in the en-US grocery store, in the car, at a shopping mall en-US . just about anywhere. Overdoses happen en-US when a person has taken more opiates (or en-US opioids) than their body can handle. en-US 7 FORT PIERCE Ft. Pierce resident Kyle en-USPatterson, a law enforcement officer and en-US investigator with the Florida Fish and Wilden-US-en-US life Conservation Commission, has received en-US the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation Award en-US for Marine Conservation. en-US Patterson was honored for his dedication en-US to enforcing marine conservation and boaten-US-en-US ing safety laws at the recent the FWC Comen-US -en-US mission meeting in Fort Lauderdale. Fish & en-US Wildlife Foundation CEO Andrew en-US Walker made the presentation on behalf en-US of the GHOF.en-US Investigator Patterson is being honored en-US for his around-the-clock dedication to proen-US-en-US tecting Floridas marine resources and the en-US safety of the boating public, Walker said. en-US Were pleased to recognize his deep comen-US -en-US mitment to conservation in partnership en-US with the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation.en-US Investigator Patterson routinely patrols en-US coastal St. Lucie, Martin and Palm Beach en-US counties, which harbor Floridas highest en-US density of nesting marine turtles to enforce en-US the Marine Turtle Protection Act. In August en-US of 2015, James McGriff of Riviera Beach, FL, en-US a subject with an extensive history of marine en-US turtle egg poaching, was arrested in St. Lucie en-US County on Hutchinson Island for felony en-US possession of marine turtle eggs and molesen-US-en-US tation of three marine turtle nests. Patteren-US -en-US son was lead investigator and directly en-US involved with the subsequent arrest and en-US interview of McGriff. en-US This led to the 2017 multi-jurisdictional en-US investigation of another suspected turtle egg en-US poacher, Carl Cobb of Riviera Beach, that en-US required many long days and nights of suren-US -en-US veillance by Patterson and his colleagues, en-US which led ultimately to Cobb and Raymond en-US L Saunders, also of Riviera Beach, being en-US arrested for being in possession of nearly en-US 500 marine turtle eggs. The timely arrest en-US led to 444 of the loggerhead turtle eggs en-US being reburied, with more than 70 percent en-US of the reburied eggs hatching. Cobb and en-US Saunders were each sentenced to seven en-US months in prison for transporting sea turtle en-US eggs for the purpose of selling them.en-US Tens of thousands of sea turtle eggs are en-US believed to be poached each year, but arrests en-US are rare. Poachers generally sell the eggs en-US which are from threatened species for $3 en-US to $5 per egg, according to FWC wildlife en-US authorities.en-US Investigator Patterson began his career en-US with the FWC in January 2007. Hes a memen-US -en-US ber of the Florida Agriculture Crimes Intelen-US -en-US ligence Unit, as well as the Florida Marine en-US Intelligence Unit, which covers training in en-US boating accidents, derelict vessels, vessel en-US theft and identification, diver deaths, etc. en-US He is an instructor for Boating-Unen-US -en-US der-the-Influence training programs and en-US ranks highly within the region among the en-US number of BUI/DUI-related arrests and en-US investigations.en-US Inv. Patterson is also active in Future en-US Farmers of America and the Florida Cattleen-US -en-US mens Association and is a member of the en-US Board of Directors for the Florida Farm en-US Bureau of St. Lucie County. en-US We are proud to present Investigator Paten-US -en-US terson with this award, said Guy Harvey en-US Ocean Foundation Executive Director Greg en-US Jacoski. FWC does a tremendous job using en-US the best science available to regulate Florien-US-en-US das natural resources and effectively enforce en-US these regulations. Like all FWC officers, en-US Investigator Patterson regularly goes above en-US and beyond the call of duty to protect Florien-US -en-US das resources and keep our waters safe.en-US Founded by world-renowned marine arten-US-en-US ist, conservationist and biologist Dr. Guy en-US Harvey, the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation en-US is an organization of philanthropists, conen-US -en-US servationists, scientists, and educators en-US focused on developing sensible strategies for en-US promoting the conservation of our oceans en-US and nurturing the next generation of marine en-US scientists and guardians of our seas.en-US Through the generous philanthropy en-US inspired by Dr. Harveys art, the Guy Harvey en-US Ocean Foundation also funds exceptional en-US research and innovative educational proen-US -en-US grams developed by universities, colleges, en-US institutes and nonprofit organizations.en-USFWC Investigator receives Guy Harvey awarden-USFor Hometown Newsen-USnewsfp@hometownnewsol.com Photo courtesy of the FWC en-USFWC Investigator Kyle Patterson received the Guy Harvey Ocean Founen-US -en-US dation award at the recent meeting of the FWC Commissioners in Ft. en-US Lauderdale. en-USthe new department come into its own in en-US just two years.en-US Forming a new department wasnt easy, en-US especially one that involved merging funcen-US -en-US tions that previously operated within three en-US departments, Mr. Capezzuto said. Looking en-US back on our accomplishments and seeing en-US how it has all come together is so rewarding. en-US We now operate as one team with a mission en-US of making PSL neighborhoods better.en-US His biggest challenge has been getting en-US residents to take time out of their busy en-US schedules to attend meetings, especially he en-US said when they are already content with en-US their neighborhoods.en-US We struggled with low attendance at seven-US -en-US eral neighborhood meetings so we worked en-US hard with our Communications Departen-US -en-US ment to make the program as mobile as posen-US-en-US sible, he explained. We created a great en-US website and continue to use social media to en-US connect with our residents to make sure en-US everyone has an opportunity to participate. en-US This way people can engage with us on their en-US terms.en-US Mr. Capezzuto attributes the NICE proen-US-en-US grams ability to grab the attention of the en-US NUSA judges to the support hes received en-US from city leaders and those overseeing Port en-US St. Lucies Capital Improvement Plan. en-US The program is successful because it has en-US the support of our City Council and staff, en-US he added. The program gives the city a en-US great deal of flexibility in assisting residents en-US with issues that come up and need some en-US attention. The fact that the program is funden-US-en-US ed through a recycling revenue partnership en-US with Waste Pro and St. Lucie County makes en-US it even better because weve answered the en-US whats in it for me question.en-US Now in its 34th year, The Best Neighboren-US -en-US hood Program Award recognizes outstanden-US -en-US ing programs implemented to improve en-US neighborhoods by a governmental entity, en-US business or corporation through social and en-US physical revitalization. NUSA judges evaluen-US -en-US ate criteria in the categories of parks, lighten-US -en-US ing, litter control, traffic management, green en-US spaces and youth and senior programs and en-US activities, among others. en-US Mr. Capezzuto said his biggest reward in en-US helping Port St. Lucie earn national acclaim en-US was seeing the city where he has resided en-US since 1983 make dramatic improvements. en-US Its very satisfying that every day my job en-US allows me to work on improvements in the en-US neighborhoods I grew up in, he said. Its en-US driving through the city, knowing that Ive en-US had a role in many neighborhood improveen-US -en-US ments that werent there when I was a kid. en-USAcclaimen-USFrom page 1

If that doesnt en-USmake the light go out, bring the car to your en-US dealer ASAP.en-US e dealer has a diagnostic machine, called en-US a scan tool which deciphers the trouble en-US codes stored in your cars computer. is en-US code doesnt necessarily tell the technician en-US exactly what the problem is. Usually it just en-US indicates an area of concern. He must do en-US further diagnostic tests to determine the en-US exact problem. Oen there are more than en-US one problem and symptom. Sometimes en-US a problem will cause the check engine en-US light to go on and then the problem goes en-US away. If the problem does not reoccur en-US during a certain number of times that en-US you start the engine, the trouble code is en-US removed from memory. Most of the reasons en-US your check engine light will come on are en-US environmentally related. If our cars did not en-US have to meet such tight emission standards, en-US you would practically never have a check en-US engine light go on. is is one of the prices en-US we are paying for clean air.en-US All too oen, the check engine light will en-US come back on right aer you have had en-US your car worked on for that very reason. en-US Many people immediately assume that en-US the dealer did not x the car right the en-US rst time and charged them for work that en-US wasnt necessary. is can be the case if the en-US dealers technician was careless or wasnt en-US properly trained. But, not infrequently, the en-US technician can do everything right and the en-US light still comes back on aer the repair en-US is made. is is because there are oen en-US multiple problems that contribute to the en-US symptom causing the check engine light to en-US go on. Or, there could be a completely new en-US problem unrelated to the rst. Remember en-US that there are hundreds of reasons that this en-US one red light can come on. It takes a very en-US well trained, conscientious technician to en-US come up with the right x.en-US e best thing you can do is to choose the en-US dealer to whom you trust your car with en-US great care. MONDAY NIGHT LEAGUE 9 Holes Two Person Teams with Handicap Starts July 2nd Traveling with golf in mind en-USWen-USith my writing job, I get to travel en-US quite a bit. I know how expensive en-US golf travel can be. Fortunately, en-US over the years I have learned a few tricks to en-US keep costs down without sacrificing fun. en-US With summer here, I am betting many of en-US us, myself included, will be hitting the en-US highways and airways in search of rest, en-US relaxation, and golf.en-US Probably the best way to save money is to en-US travel with a group. Get as many of your en-US golf buddies to join you on your trip. Larger en-US groups will find that they have leverage en-US when it comes to negotiating lower prices en-US for rooms, food, and golf.en-US If you have hotel or credit card points en-US check to see what benefits they give you. en-US Some credit card companies offer free room en-US upgrades, or discounted greens fees at en-US many resorts. If more than one in your en-US group has a free or discounted night en-US coming at a hotel, you could combine these en-US to get several nights out of your stay for free en-US or greatly reduced.en-US Check with your home club. Many these en-US days are managed by a company that has en-US many courses in its portfolio. See if you get en-US discounted golf at other courses owned or en-US managed by the same company.en-US Ask about unlimited golf packages. Many en-US resorts offer these in off-peak seasons to en-US entice business. There are also packages en-US that include lunch, drinks, and discounted en-US replays.en-US If you really want to avoid the big money en-US greens fees, steer away from the resorts en-US advertised on television or that tout their en-US Home of the Blah Blah Championship en-US layout. While it may be fun to say that you en-US played these courses, you will almost en-US always pay a premium to do so. National en-US advertising is expensive, as is maintaining en-US the course in those fantastic conditions. In en-US the end it all gets passed down to the en-US customer.en-US If you havent played in a while, avoid en-US playing your first round on an expensive, en-US plush course. Take advantage of the en-US municipal courses and use that round to en-US knock off the rust from not picking up a en-US club for so long.en-US While its nice to be prepared and have en-US most everything planned and thought-out, en-US its to your benefit to leave some time open en-US for a last-minute round. Once an empty tee en-US time is gone, it is gone. Many courses offer en-US deep discounts if you call to fill one of those en-US spots at just the right time. There are also en-US several apps that allow you to find tee times en-US at the very last moment and book they on en-US your phone while your buddy drives to the en-US course.en-US Plan your trip for mid-week. Prices on en-US travel, hotels and golf are always higher on en-US the weekends. Besides, it will get you away en-US from the office for a couple extra days.en-US Make sure that en-US everyone is comfortable en-US with everything that is en-US planned. There are times en-US when the guys with the en-US deepest pockets want en-US everyone to eat at a more en-US expensive restaurant, stay en-US at a fancier place, play the en-US more expensive courses. en-US While you dont want to en-US make one person feel en-US unwelcome, you certainly en-US dont want to let one en-US person have all the say.en-US Next to golf, food can en-US be the most expensive part of your trip. en-US Look for accommodations that have a en-US kitchen which allows you to cook meals. en-US Find coupons for discounted meals or even en-US visit restaurants websites and sign up with en-US their emails to get discounts for your first en-US visit.en-US Look for courses that offer walking. You en-US may not want to walk in the summer heat en-US of the south, but walking a course in a more en-US temperate climate is not only good for your en-US wallet, but for your health as well.en-US Consider playing in the afternoon. Rates en-US are cheaper in the afternoon and you can en-US shop around for those last-minute deals I en-US talked about earlier. Additionally, it allows en-US you to sleep in. Its easy to get worn out on a en-US golf trip. Late nights playing poker with the en-US gang, or just hanging out late, coupled with en-US early tee times will quickly run you down.en-US If you have a group that is spread all over en-US the country or across several states, you en-US could consider rotating between staying at en-US one members home one trip and then en-US another the next and so on. Youd all save en-US on accommodations, and could put that en-US savings toward better courses or a feast on en-US your final night. Just remember to show en-US your appreciation to the host and be as en-US accommodating when it becomes your en-US turn.en-US These are just a few things that I have en-US learned over the years. Please, share yours en-US with me and Ill pass along the good word. en-US Happy travels!en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years. en-US 18 en-USI en-UScame home after work one day and en-US started thinking about dinner and what en-US I would prepare that evening just like I en-US always do. en-US You all probably know by now. I do all en-US the cooking at home, which is great because en-US my wife does everything else. She pays the en-US bills, handles anything about the house and en-US family, and we are both happy with our en-US lives. en-US I try to keep the refrigerator stocked with en-US different foods, and the pantry is always full en-US because I like to visit my favorite stores en-US several times during the week. I always have en-US fresh food to choose from. I usually cook en-US seafood twice a week, so I decided it was en-US seafood day. en-US Now lets see, my mother-in-law likes en-US salmon, so I will make her teriyaki salmon en-US with fruit chutney. My wife loves farm-en-US raised catfish with lemon and dill, so I have en-US her covered. Ill make a fresh salad the way en-US my family likes with hearts of lettuce, en-US English cucumber, heirloom tomatoes, en-US orange slices and feta cheese. Oh yes, they en-US like my home-made salad dressing (which I en-US will share with you later). en-US Now for the boys and me. Oh! I know! I en-US have some chicken breasts, so Ill make en-US some fried chicken tenders with sweet en-US potato fries. That should cover everyone en-US except the two cats, and I even brought en-US home two bags of dry food that was on sale en-US (but my boys will feed the cats). en-US It was at about this time when it hit me, en-US Oh my goodness, Ive opened a restaurant en-US in my own kitchen and the family is en-US ordering off the daily menu! How did this en-US happen what have I done I started en-US thinking this has to stop! And then reality en-US hit me in the face again. Wait a minute, hold en-US on. I dont have to cut the grass or take out en-US the trash or deal with the house or make en-US doctor appointments or fill out the income en-US tax forms or make any travel arrangements en-US and the list goes on and on. en-US I think I better keep my mouth shut and en-US keep the restaurant open. Im thinking of en-US extending the hours and offering an en-US early-bird menu on special days and Sunday en-US morning brunch! en-US Now for that special dressing...en-USCOSTAS SALAD DRESSINGen-USIngredientsen-US 1/2-cup orange juiceen-US 1/4-cup Asian rice vinegaren-US 1/2-cup Mirin, Japanese-style wineen-US 1/4-cup soy sauceen-US 1/4-cup olive oilen-US Salt and pepper to taste en-US Directionsen-US Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix en-US well.en-US Costa Magoulas is dean of the Mori en-US Hosseini College of Hospitality and Culinary en-US Management at Daytona State College. en-US Contact him at (386) 506-3578 or en-US magoulc@en-US daytonastate.edu. The en-US convenience of being able to en-US place your printer anywhere in the room, en-US even in another room altogether and still be en-US able to print, makes them very appealing en-US indeed. And with just about everyone en-US equipped with a wireless router today, en-US picking a printer that is WiFi enabled en-US makes sense. To top it off, the technology en-US has gotten so common that it can be hard to en-US find a printer that is not wireless capable. en-US But what about the pitfalls? What are en-US some of the Gotchas! that you need to en-US keep in mind when considering a wireless en-US printer? en-US On the surface wireless printing looks en-US like a great idea but, like most things en-US computer related, it comes with a price; in en-US this case, the price is a combination of en-US reliability and complexity. en-US I say reliability because wireless printers en-US are notorious for dropping off line for no en-US apparent reason. Usually right when en-US something important needs to be printed, en-US like an airline boarding pass or court en-US document, you go to print and nothing. en-US Worked fine yesterday but today, not so en-US much. en-US Now I know that some of you are reading en-US this and thinking what? Ive been using a en-US wireless printer for years and have never en-US had a problem! and to you I say Great en-US job! but keep in mind, people dont call me en-US when its working, they call me when it en-US stops and I hear it from different people all en-US the time. And its typically the same story en-US every time wireless printer, working fine en-US yesterday, something really important en-US needs to be printed today and now, en-US nothing Or a message pops up telling you en-US the computer cant communicate with the en-US printer but it doesnt matter, the end result en-US is the same nothing comes out of the en-US printer. Thats when I get the call. en-US I mentioned complexity as being the en-US second trade off and heres where that en-US comes in. When you connect a printer to en-US your computer with a wire (a USB printer en-US cable with one end plugged into the back of en-US the printer and the other end plugged into a en-US USB port on the computer) thats often all en-US there is to it. Unless something goes wrong, en-US your computer should automatically detect en-US the printer and set it up, most often without en-US having to click a thing. en-US On the other hand, when you set up a en-US wireless printer, you have all the added en-US complexity of having to connect the printer en-US to your WiFi router first and that, dependen-US -en-US ing on the make and model of the printer, en-US can involve anything from en-US having to type in your wifi en-US password on a little control en-US panel on the front of the printer en-US to needing to plug the printer en-US into the computer with a printer en-US cable anyway and then use the en-US computer to program the en-US printer for wifi access. Then en-US you have to go to the computer en-US and try to find and connect to en-US the printer over the network. en-US And when it does go offline for en-US no apparent reason, you may en-US find yourself reconnecting it to en-US your WiFi router all over again. en-US There are so many things that en-US can knock a wireless device off line I en-US couldnt possibly list them all here. Some of en-US the more common reasons are power en-US fluctuations that cause the equipment to en-US restart, some cordless phones can cause a en-US sort of jamming that can cause a printer en-US to drop off line and even microwave en-US interference can suddenly cause a device to en-US drop offline.en-US The cause doesnt really matter the point en-US that Im trying to make is that the wireless en-US connection is way more fragile and easily en-US broken than the traditional printer cable en-US jammed into the back of the computer. Sure en-US there are times when a wired printer drops en-US off line but when that happens, resetting the en-US device usually just means unplugging it and en-US plugging it back in. With a wireless device, en-US you often find yourself back at square one en-US trying to re join the printer to the wireless en-US network. en-US I have a rule of thumb when it comes to en-US printers; Even if the printer is capable of en-US running wirelessly, if its going to be in the en-US same room as the computer, save yourself a en-US headache in the future and just connect to en-US the printer with a cable. After all, theres no en-US rule that says you have to use a wireless en-US printer wirelessly they all have a place for en-US a cable. en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers.
