PORT ST LUCIE It is rare to witness en-US100th-birthday celebrations and rarer still to see en-US them hosted at a Dennys restaurant.en-US But Sister Marie Alice LaGace, a beloved local en-US resident and nun who credited her long life to en-US daily mass and enjoying a breakfast of two eggs en-US and one slice of toast at Dennys had another celeen-US -en-US bration in store on April 17. She said the outpouren-US -en-US ing of support truly special and unique, and that is en-US one of the things she likes best about the Port St. en-US Lucie community.en-US In everyones face is God and people need to en-US see that, and this feels like celebrating with family, en-US Sister LaGace said. She credits her longevity to en-US daily Mass and receiving the Blessed Sacrament, en-US prayer, one Ensure per day and her daily trip to en-US Dennys, which is usually provided by a parishioen-US-en-US ner from Port St. Lucie Holy Family Catholic en-US Church. I love this place and thats why I come en-US here; people asked me if I wanted to go to any en-US other restaurant and I said, No, Ive got one right en-US here.en-US In the process of following the routine she has en-US enjoyed almost every weekday for the past 25-plus en-US years, the restaurant dedicated a booth in her en-US honor and hosted a charity event in her name. Sisen-US -en-US ter LaGace is so-loved throughout the community en-US that her meal is almost always paid for by someone en-US in the restaurant, and on this occasion a packed en-US house of about 100 was on hand to see the dedicaen-US -en-US tion, which included a plaque at the booth in quesen-US -en-US tion.en-US Her friends, family and fans including Port St. en-US Lucie Mayor Gregory Oravec and the team at en-US Dennys participated in the celebration, which en-US saw 10 percent of the proceeds that day went to en-US benefit Sister Maries Port St. Lucie Holy Family en-USBeloved nun celebrates en-US 100th birthday at Dennysen-USBy Gaylon Parkeren-USgparker@hometownnewsol.comen-USPORT ST LUCIE Travelers through en-US Port St. Lucie, get ready to slow down.en-US A recommendation from Port St. en-US Lucie Police Department Chief John en-US Bolduc was passed unanimously Tuesen-US -en-US day by the City Council, and it will en-US mean homeowners there will be able to en-US breathe a sigh of relief. Complaints en-US about the rapid rate of speed along the en-US roadway which used to be 40 miles an en-US hour were heard and that speed will en-US now be reduced to 35. The area for the en-US speed reduction is between Port St. en-US Lucie Boulevard and Prima Vista Bouen-US-en-US levard.en-US Along with that, the City Council is en-US seeking to place sidewalks along Floren-US -en-US esta in the future, to further protect en-US walkers and, more importantly, children en-US who are going to and from bus stops or en-US playing outside. Part of the road will en-US remain at 40 mph, but the vast majority en-US will be reduced to 35.en-US As you know, there have been a few en-US complaints about Floresta Drive, recenten-US-en-US ly, and state statute provides that the city en-US or any municipality can set speed en-US zones inside the municipality, Chief en-US Bolduc said. Our particular municipal en-US code provides for the chief of police to en-US make a recommendation to the city en-US council on those changes to speed limen-US-en-US its.en-US The documentation supported the en-US decision.en-US Due to the recent increase of resien-US -en-US dential concerns pertaining to speeding en-US along the Floresta Drive corridor en-US between Port St. Lucie Boulevard and en-US Prima Vista Boulevard, the Public en-US Works Department conducted multiple en-US speed studies, the regular meeting en-US agenda packet said. ST LUCIE COUNTY St. Lucie County Fire District en-USChief Nate Spera took over in early March, and since then he en-US has been faced with a variety of challenges. With recent en-US rains tamping down somewhat on fire danger in the countys en-US rural areas, the district still is faced with daily events that en-US require constant monitoring and attention.en-US Were a unique organization as an independent fire en-US control district the fire chiefs job here almost is like a city en-US manager or county administrator in that I respond directly en-US to the elected authority and thats a real challenge, Chief en-US Spera said. It gives us the ability to kind of set our own en-US course and plan our own destiny.en-US Similar to Martin County, the SLCFD has to focus on en-US waterways, residential areas, woodland areas and commeren-US -en-US cial zones. He said identifying high-risk areas is key and en-US then mitigating risks to those areas first. There are target en-US hazards such as chemical plants and high-occupancy builden-US -en-US ings, and his district has plans-of-attack for each one.en-US Chief Sperajoined the fire service in 1984 as a volunteer en-US firefighter for the City of Coral Springs. After meeting the en-US Florida Professional Firefighter standards and becoming a en-US Florida Certified Paramedic, he was employed by the St. en-US Lucie County Fire District in 1991. During his tenure he has en-US served as a firefighter paramedic, field training instructor, en-US station officer, administrative officer, and chief officer in the en-US Operations Division.en-US I just took it one rung at a time, Chief Spera said. Its a en-US great feeling because we have a great team here, and you en-US almost feel like a player/coach in sports. Im not afraid to en-US step in directly and the men and women that work here are en-US just top-notch and that makes the job easier.en-US Interdepartmental partnerships with the St. Lucie en-US County Sheriffs Office and city services mean that many en-US personnel stand shoulder-to-shoulder with each other, and en-US Chief Spera said the system works with fluidity. Were on a en-US first-name basis and have a great relationship with all the en-US law-enforcement personnel, he added.en-US With the Forestry Service, we provide a en-US coordinated attack and when they go there they en-US try and wrap a line around a fire and its our job en-US to keep the fire within that line, Chief Spera en-US said. Under the best conditions, that works out en-US pretty easily. But with wind which is a major, en-US driving factor its harder to contain and en-US requires a lot of coordination.en-US The SLCFD recently wrapped up its hurrien-US -en-US cane-season training and the coordination with en-US emergency services also is a tight-knit unit, en-US with them working closely in the war-room en-US during major storm events.en-US Its all about coordination, and I remember a en-US specific event when we had twin storms in 2005 en-US with a diabetic that was locked out of his area en-US because of a curfew, he said. The sheriffs en-US office gave this gentleman a ride to get to Buten-US -en-US terfields to get insulin and there were four agenen-US -en-US cies to take care of one person and thats a en-US constant theme. en-US In other fire district news, Chief Spera recenten-US -en-US ly announced the promotion of Division Chief/en-US Fire Marshal Derek Foxx to the rank of deputy en-US chief. Dep. Chief Foxx will oversee the Fire Disen-US-en-US trict Support Services departments and divien-US -en-US sions.en-US Dep. Chief Foxx has been with the fire disen-US -en-US trict since 1990 and has most recently been en-US responsible for the Fire Prevention Bureau, building and en-US grounds and logistics. He is the first African-American to en-US achieve executive level rank in the history of the fire district. en-US Also, Captain Debbie Knupp will be taking over the duties en-US of Fire Marshal. Captain Knupp began her career with the en-US fire district in 1995 and has been part of the Fire Prevention en-US Bureau team since 2005. She holds a Masters Degree in en-US Health Care Administration and is certified as a firefighter, en-US paramedic, fire inspector and a fire investigator. Captain en-USKnupp is the first female Fire Marshal in St. Lucie County en-US history.en-US Chief Foxx and Captain Knupp have served the citizens en-US of St. Lucie County with distinction throughout their en-US careers. This advancement will solidify the fire districts en-US administration and ensure efficiency and effectiveness. en-US Chief Sperasaid. en-US For more information about the district, please visit en-US or call 772-621-3400.en-USSt. Lucie County Fire Chief hits ground runningen-USBy Gaylon

I thank the EmployU organization en-US for having the caring and the heart to help en-US folks with disabilities find employment. en-US Publix helps where they can and should be en-US commended. The state of Florida has got to en-US be one of the worst states in regard to comen-US-en-US panies making the attempt to employ the en-US disabled. en-US 9 en-USFORT PIERCE -The St. Lucie County en-US Commission agreed April 17 to accept a en-US ship confiscated by the U.S. Customs and en-US Border Protection for a new artificial reef on en-US the condition that the community itself en-US raise funds for its cleaning, preparation and en-US sinking off the coast. en-US Commissioners voted 3-0 to accept the en-US conditional donation, with Commissioner en-US Linda Bartz absent and Commissioner en-US Cathy Townsend abstaining due to a potenen-US-en-US tial conflict of interest. County Attorney en-US Dan McIntyre apologized to the Board for en-US having submitted the item for the agenda at en-US the last minute on the approximately 180-en-US foot M/V Voice-Bernadette due to a loomen-US -en-US ing U.S. Customs deadline.en-US As I understand it, Customs has asked en-US for an answer by May 1, he said. Customs en-US has agreed to donate the vessel if the county en-US will assume liability and associated costs en-US upon the transfer of the vessel and confirm en-US that the vessel will be used as an artificial en-US reef. Basically this would be for the Fort en-US Pierce sports fishing site in waters at least en-US 150 feet deep, and they would sink her to en-US the sea floor. en-US The county attorney confirmed that St. en-US Lucie County Marine Resource Coordinaen-US-en-US tor Jim Oppenborn had already performed en-US an initial inspection of the vessel docked on en-US the Miami River with a representative of en-US McCulley Marine Services, Inc., who gave en-US the latter an estimate of $149,000 for the en-US cleanup, towing, preparation and sinking of en-US the ship for the countys artificial reef proen-US -en-US gram. U.S. Customs itself with contribute en-US $37,000 towards the deal, but the county en-US would have to find another way to pay the en-US cost if enough donations dont come in. en-US The issue really is economics, Mr. en-US McIntyre added. We believe that the costs en-US will be offset 100 percent through donations en-US from the community. In the event that the en-US county for whatever reason couldnt come en-US up with the funds by Oct. 1, McCulley en-US would look to other areas to deploy the vesen-US -en-US sel. We believe its a good opportunity, and en-US we believe well get the donations.en-US Mr. Oppenborn said he loathed asking en-US the Commission for funding but believes en-US the proposed artificial reef would provide en-US additional economic stimulus to the local en-US fishing and diving industries. en-US Ive gone about this process very, very en-US cautiously, and I have a lot of trepidation en-US about coming here, he said. This is someen-US -en-US thing I dont approach lightly. Im no econoen-US-en-US mist, but I can tell you the benefit to the en-US fisheries offshore and the fisheries inshore, en-US which are very intricately connected.en-US Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky asked en-US Mr. Oppenborn about the success of the Tug en-US Lesley Lee that the county sank as an artifien-US -en-US cial reef in 2007. The latter said by 2008 en-US consultants hired by the county made a rare en-US discovery at the site.en-US They found a small branch of oculina en-US coral growing, and the second year they en-US found that the coral had actually increased en-US in size, he said. These are rates unheard of en-US on the Oculina Banks slightly north of St. en-US Lucie County. The Oculina Banks are deep en-US water coral that became somewhat impacten-US-en-US ed by bottom shrimp trawling. So were tryen-US-en-US ing to find a way to focus efforts on how to en-US restore these oculina coral reefs to the Treaen-US-en-US sure Coast.en-US For his part, Commissioner Anthony en-US Bonna asked Mr. Oppenborn for assurance en-US that the county wouldnt end up on the hook en-US for the balance of the cost for the new artifien-US -en-US cial reef. Im very much in favor of the projen-US -en-US ect already, the former said. It was my en-US understanding that your position is that if en-US were unable to raise the funds, that youd en-US recommend going in a different direction en-US and not coming back for General Reserves. en-US Is that correct? en-US That is correct, Mr. Oppenborn replied. en-US I can raise the money to clean it. This is en-US something that my advisory committee has en-US wanted for the last 13 years Ive been here. en-US Anything larger would cost maybe millions en-US of dollars, but this [vessel] between 100 and en-US 200 feet is the perfect size and the perfect en-US opportunity for the county. en-US Commission Chairwoman Frannie en-US Hutchinson admitted that the funding and en-US the funding source was the primary issue en-US for her. The agenda item stated the countys en-US artificial reef program still has a balance of en-US $50,367 in reserves that could potentially be en-US used for the project. en-US I would like to suggest that we move foren-US -en-US ward with this because theres already been a en-US good start to fundraising, she said. This en-US community has been very supportive in the en-US past, and I feel very certain it will be supen-US -en-US portive in the future of these types of projen-US -en-US ects, especially when it brings in tourist dolen-US-en-US lars for the fishing industry.en-US One thing she insisted on in the process, en-US however, was transparency by those en-US involved in the project.en-US If you see that we are coming up short, I Earn 10% interest Secured by real estate Short or Long term Carlson Family, LLC Marshall Copley 772-882-8149 Successful real-estate Investors since 2005 Treasuring Life | To learn more, visit or call 866.999.4550 expanded family of services, including palliative care, pediatric care and grief support, to better meet the needs of our community.Treasure Coast Hospice Has Grown to Become Treasure Health! en-US 12 Were Here Day and NightFULL CIRCLE SENIOR CARE MARTIN COUNTY A recently pur en-US-en-US chased track chair is being used to open a en-US world of exploration for people who have en-US difficulty with mobility. The chair has been en-US used by dozens of people at Jonathan Dicken-US -en-US inson State Park in recent months, as it en-US allows the disabled and others get out on en-US trails that would have previously been inacen-US -en-US cessible to them.en-US The chair comes courtesy of a donation en-US from Friends of Jonathan Dickinson State en-US Park, and it is an all-terrain wheelchair that en-US is able to go frompaved surfaces to dirt, en-US mud and even sand without missing a beat, en-US allowing our disabled visitors to experience en-US thePark as never before, according to the en-US website. The chair is easily controlledby en-US the user, allowing the freedom to get out on en-US our trails.en-US its used at least a couple times a week en-US and definitely on the weekends, said JDSP en-US Park Services Specialist Libby Reinert. Peoen-US -en-US ple are starting to get familiar with it and en-US weve had some repeat customers. Its en-US become really popular and there is no fee; en-US its completely free.en-US The chair can be reserved for free in two-en-US hour increments, and park officials say it is a en-US great way for senior citizens to explore the en-US many trails at the park, in some cases for the en-US first time in years. It has dual levers and a en-US comfortable seat for all ages and sizes of en-US guests. The chair cost about $15,000 and en-US was paid for by fundraising efforts and en-US membership funds from the Friends of Jonen-US -en-US athan Dickinson State Park.en-US They tried a couple of chairs and had en-US vendors come out, and they picked this one en-US for the best use for the park, Ms. Reinert en-US said. The feedbacks been great. We have en-US testimonials from people who have used it, en-US and we had one person who worked at the en-US park for years who was never able to get out en-US on the trails with us because she has multien-US -en-US ple sclerosis.en-US Just in the past month or so and shes en-US been here since 2007 this was the first time en-USshe could get out on the trails and that was en-US just amazing for her.en-US The park services across the state have en-US taken to the idea, and more areas are getting en-US them all the time. Currently, there are about en-US four or five others at other state parks. There en-US also is a specific trail set up special for the en-US track chair that is about a two-mile loop.en-US Its really just for anybody who cant get en-US around that well, Ms. Reinert said. We had en-US a guy who came in this last week who had en-US hip surgery and could barely walk around, en-US and he was able to get out hiking with his en-US wife for the first time in months.en-US For more information about the track en-US chair, please visit the website at en-US http://www.en-US south-florida/en-US or call 561-745-5551.en-USState Park offers new en-US mobile chair for disableden-USBy Gaylon Photo courtesy of Jonathan Dickinson State en-USParken-USThis recently purchased track en-US chair is being used to open a en-US world of exploration for people en-US who have difficulty with mobility. en-US It is available free of charge to en-US visitors at the park. en-US en-US Weekly Storytime Jam:en-US Tuesdays at en-US 10:30 a.m., Zora Neale Hurston Branch en-US Library, 3008 Avenue D, Fort Pierce. en-US Designed for ages 2-5, this interactive en-US program will have your young ones clapping, en-US dancing, singing and listening to stories each en-US week. en-US For more information, call (772) 462-en-US 2154 or visit en-US en-US or en-US email en-US en-US Celebrate Recovery:en-US 7-9:30 p.m., en-US Fairlawn Baptist Church, 3003 Rhode Island en-US Ave., Fort Pierce. I en-UShave always been one to enjoy a car ride en-US and a round of golf. Cruising a bit up the en-US interstate to play, doesnt bother me a en-US bit. When the course sits just off the en-US interstate, and is a fine track, all the better. en-US Duran Golf Club, in Viera, just off I-95 is en-US just that track. en-US General Manager David Tomczak and his en-US friendly staff know how important it is to en-US set the right vibe for a round of golf. My tee en-US time allowed me to sleep in a bit, drop the en-US family off with relatives and still get to the en-US course in time.en-US While I felt quite special, I realized this en-US kind of treatment is what the locals have en-US come to enjoy every time they play Duran.en-US When I arrived at Duran, the first thing en-US that jumped out at us was the beautiful, en-US lush green of the place. Throw in some en-US early sprouting flowers and the look of the en-US place had me relaxed and ready to take on en-US the course.en-US Duran Golf Club, completed in 2005, en-US features five sets of tees, with the longest en-US playing to 7,151 yards. A very stern test en-US considering how much wind blows through en-US the fairways. The less accomplished players en-US or those looking to enjoy a fun round, can en-US easily find a set of tees to match their skill en-US or mood for the day.en-US The course also has a full dining room, en-US with a fantastic menu complete with en-US specials. In fact, had I not had other en-US commitments, I would have stayed and en-US enjoyed a great meal.en-US Also on property is the Duran Academy en-US of Golf, a comprehensive instructional and en-US coaching program dedicated to golfers that en-US are passionate about getting the most out of en-US their golf game. The full time staff of PGA en-US Instructors offer one-on-one individual en-US lessons and group sessions to clinics, en-US multi-day golf schools, and high tech video en-US swing analysis.en-US The course was designed by Lewis Chip en-US Powell. His keen eye for manipulating an en-US areas natural weather patterns and wind en-US tendencies made him the perfect choice to en-US design features that considered the en-US wide-open spaces found here, along with en-US the varying coastal winds of the Floridas en-US east coast. The combination resulted in en-US holes that play with as much as a five-club en-US difference from day to day.en-US To build a golf course on a piece of en-US property this flat, and void of all but one en-US tree at the start, requires moving and en-US shaping more than a million cubic yards of en-US earth. The result is a course with links en-US characteristics, including rolling terrain, en-US mounded greens that will challenge the en-US best of putters and over a dozen sparkling en-US ponds.en-US The use of native grasses, the importaen-US -en-US tion of a several thousand oaks, cypress and en-US native palms, gives the course tremendous en-US character. Couple this with being built on en-US what was once a sod farm, providing soil en-US that produces lush en-US conditions and its en-US easy to see why the en-US course has won its en-US share of awards and en-US accolades. en-US The course starts en-US you off on the right en-US foot, a pleasant en-US par-5 with no en-US surprises. I even en-US began my day with en-US a birdie. The third en-US is home to the only en-US tree standing when en-US construction began. en-US The lone palm en-US stands guard on a en-US small peninsula that en-US juts out into the en-US lake warning golfers en-US of the danger lurking behind.en-US On your way around the course you are en-US greeted with a pleasurable playing experien-US -en-US ence. Choosing the proper set of tees gives en-US one just enough challenge. I used most of en-US the clubs in my bag and quickly figured out en-US that the wind needed to be taken into en-US account on every shot.en-US The wind and the variety in the design en-US make club selection challenging. Dependen-US -en-US ing on the wind, you may have to hit a en-US 6-iron from 140-yards on one hole, and a en-US 9-iron from the same distance on the next. en-US The homes around the course are beautiful, en-US and set well back from the course, not really en-US interfering with play. en-US The closing hole is a great one. The par-4 en-US is a soft dog-lag left that bends along the en-US water all down its left side. Depending on en-US how daring your drive is, you can find your en-US approach requiring anything from a en-US mid-iron to a fairway wood. en-US Rates at Duran Golf Club are very en-US competitive, with Florida residents en-US enjoying a discount. The course is located en-US at 7032 Stadium Parkway, Viera, FL 32940. en-US For more information, or to make a tee en-US time, visit the website at en-US www.durangolf.en-US comen-US or call (321) 504-7776. en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years.
