With the Great American en-US Cleanup, of course. en-US It is that time of year again, and communities en-US across the Treasure Coast are joining in the en-US efforts. On Saturday, April 28 the event will be in en-US Port St. Lucie, and registration begins at7:30 a.m. en-US with the cleanup running from8 a.m. to 1 p.m.en-US Volunteers will meet at thePortSt.LuciePublic en-US Works Department,en-US 450 en-US S.W. Thornhill Driveen-US and en-US enjoy a free breakfast, with the first 500 people en-US receiving a complimentary T-shirt. After that, they en-US will board buses that will take them to several en-US locations throughout the city that are most in need en-US of cleanup.en-US What were looking for is to decrease the litter en-US as much as possible, and not only are the people en-US picking up the litter but they are learning and en-US passing along that information on to others and en-US its just a continuation of how we can improve our en-US community, said Anna Marie Colonnese, the Speen-US -en-US cial Projects Coordinator for Keep Port St. Lucie en-US Beautiful. When people get out there and volunen-US -en-US teer, they can be the eyes and ears to continue to en-US watch out for whats going on and in turn the benen-US -en-US efits keep adding up.en-US Afterward, the buses will take the volunteers en-US back to the public works complex for a free lunch en-US TRADITION A long-range goal to en-US provide quality jobs could soon come en-US true for the City of Port St. Lucie through en-US the acquisition of the so-called Tradien-US-en-US tion jobs corridor. City Manager Russell en-US Blackburn said the area has the potential en-US for becoming a major hub for the creen-US -en-US ation of jobs and opening of companies en-US due to its proximity to Interstate 95 and en-US previously installed water and sewer sysen-US -en-US tems and infrastructure.en-US Theres nothing like this property en-US anywhere else in the city because most en-US of our lots are small and the jobs corrien-US -en-US dor can have flexible plots sizes, Mr. en-US Blackburn said. So, in order to develop en-US this area and fulfill this dream infraen-US-en-US structure was acquired and the southern en-US grove special assessment was established en-US to provide the infrastructure.en-US The area is known as Southern en-US Grove, and is located near Becker Road, en-US and was annexed into the city in 2004. en-US Core Development was the developer at en-US the time, and one major area of the spot en-US was focused on as the jobs corridor en-US originally targeting research facilities en-US such as the now defunct Vaccine Gene en-US Therapy Institute.en-US The concept was that Core would pay en-US the debt service on a loan to install that en-US infrastructure, such as an exit on I-95 en-US and a north-south major road known as en-US Village Parkway. In 2010, Core was en-US struggling during the recession, Mr. en-US Blackburn said, and the lender took over en-US the Core assets in Southern Grove. Some en-US land was developed and others were sold en-US off, mostly in residential areas north of en-US Tradition Parkway, which has been very en-US successful.en-US The properties for the jobs corridor en-US are in Southern Grove and Western en-US Grove, and if nobody else is going to pay en-US the special assessments on the property en-US then the city would. That key element en-US was approved by the city council in 2007, en-US and the special assessments have been en-US paid by the owner since then. en-US The 1,247-acre parcel of land is owned en-USCity seeks en-US ownership en-US of jobs en-US corridoren-USBy Gaylon Parkeren-USgparker@hometownnewsol.comen-USBy Gaylon Parkeren-USgparker@hometownnewsol.comen-USBeautification programs win en-US with cleanups, volunteersen-USSeeen-US en-US BEAUTIFICATIONen-US page 4en-US Seeen-US en-US CORRIDORen-US page 12

en-US 3 ST LUCIE COUNTY Better a Tiny Home than en-USno home at all.en-US That is part of the sentiment of St. Lucie County en-US Habitat for Humanitys recent combination with Indien-US-en-US an River State College, the Treasure Coast Builders en-US Association and CareerSource Treasure Coast to build en-US a so-called Tiny Home, which will be auctioned off en-US on Saturday, April 28 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at en-US the PSL ReStore site, 10185 S. Federal Hwy. in Port St. en-US Lucie.en-US Its the very first YouthBuild program to come to en-US the Treasure Coast, and the purpose of it is to provide en-US at-risk youths with skills, education and a wage and en-US our role in that is to teach them construction skills, en-US said Melissa Winstead, who serves as development en-US director for SLC Habitat for Humanity. We have 16 to en-US 20 kids on a daily basis out at the college in the conen-US-en-US struction lab building this tiny home and how cool is en-US that?en-US The home is 188 square feet, is on a trailer and is en-US livable and follows the same rules of the road as a recen-US -en-US reation vehicle. It would be particularly useful for en-US camping, fishing and SLCHFH envisions building two en-US or three per year to be auctioned as a fundraising tool en-US as part of the Home is the Key effort in April. en-US The exciting part is that were in a time after the en-UShurricanes that our resources for construction are en-US very low, so being able to provide these at-risk kids, en-US most of whom have dropped out of high school, a way en-US to get back into the workforce to learn some skills, en-US Ms. Winstead said. Its a really great thing for our en-US local economy and this program and all the players en-US involved are hoping that aspect takes off and we can en-US do more vocational training on the Treasure Coast.en-US The event will feature childrens activities, food en-US trucks, raffles and vendors and the auction will be en-US open to the community. It also focuses on the fact that en-US there is a need for affordable housing in the commuen-US -en-US nity, organizers said, and 46 percent of St. Lucie en-US County residents are living near or below the poverty en-US line and in homes that are too expensive. en-US People also can participate in the program by en-US donating by purchasing a key for $1, $5, or $20 online en-US at www.stluciehabitat.org or at one of the ReStore en-US locations.en-US The kids are doing fabulously, and the homes have en-US resold for anywhere between $40,000 and $60,000 and en-US the company that we bought the floor plans from en-US Cornerstone Tiny Homes out of Longwood, Fla. do en-US custom homes and we thought this would be really en-US fun, Ms. Winstead said. The winner of the auction en-US can choose the cabinets and counters and paint color en-US so were going to customize it for them.en-US For more information, please visit en-UShttp://www.en-US stluciehabitat.org/en-US or call 772-464-1117.en-USHabitat for Humanity hosts Tiny Home auctionen-USBy Gaylon Parkeren-USgparker@hometownnewsol.com The Tiny en-USHome, here en-US under construcen-US -en-US tion, which will en-US be auctioned off en-US on Saturday, en-US April 28 between en-US 11 a.m. and 2 en-US p.m. at the PSL en-US ReStore site, en-US 10185 S. After staying at one last en-US week, I have to say they are interesting. Did en-US you know that its preferable to put the bathen-US -en-US room light switches outside the bathroom in en-US the master bedroom? Just in case you need en-US to use the facilities in the middle of the en-US night, you also get to wake your spouse so en-US she knows where you are at all times. en-US Usually the hard water will cause the en-US shower-head to point in various directions, en-US unfortunately none of them downward in en-US your direction. They also make sure you en-US know about their amenities when you turn en-US on the TV. All their sets start on their chanen-US-en-US nel, which has a volume setting twice the en-US level of what the other channels need to en-US use. I learned to turn the volume down to en-US five before I shut off the set when I was done en-US watching sports, it needs to be at twenty five en-US to actually hear the announcers, otherwise if en-US my spouse turned it on in the morning she en-US would be blasted out of bed, not a pretty en-US sight, Ive learned from past experience. I en-US just want to share these couple tips if you en-US plan on staying at a local resort in the near en-US future. Gotta Love Floridaen-USCan you help me?en-USHELP: Can anyone tell me how to stop en-US the incessant phone calls from robo calls? en-US My phone rings all day long. Is there any way to stop en-US these. I cant even block these numbers en-US because its always a different number and en-US from all over the country. I am on the No en-US Call registry, but that doesnt seem to do any en-US good.en-USHow do you stop all these en-US mailings looking for money?en-USI received 49 last month. They fill up the en-US wastebasket very quick. Now, I am getting en-US some from people I have never heard of. My en-US husband also gets the same mailings, so add en-US that up. We do give to several of these, but at en-US my choosing, not theirs. Again, they fill up en-US the garbage can very quickly. Any ideas how en-US to stop this? Thank you for your papers. en-US They are very good.en-US Are we having fun yet?en-USWe could have super slip and slides, with en-US fun rides, run by solar picnic pavilions, en-US along the way. And, we would raise the river en-US level by 1-inch per mile, per day just en-US enough to reverse net flows and help change en-US the waters in the problem areas, enabling en-US more life. Our tax money is there and the en-US multi-splendored benefits are possible at en-US low cost. The science is self-evident.en-USWe rely on the Postal Serviceen-USThere are still some of us elders out there en-US who do not have access to email, dont know en-US how to use email even if we had it.en-US So, our main sources of communication, en-US as well as the ability, and hopefully we will en-US have it, the Postal Service.en-US Thank you, and keep that in mind that en-US there are some people who are young and en-US elders, like myself, who do not know how to en-US do an email thing.en-USTurn signalsen-USOf course, everyone who has driven has en-US noticed the 50-60 percent of the inconsideren-US -en-US ate drivers in who are too lazy and uncaring en-US to use turn signals. Traveling across en-US Western Europe England, Portugal, Spain, en-US France, Italy we saw drivers who were not en-US only courteous, but knew the rules of the en-US road and obeyed them and traffic laws.en-US Almost without exception, I cannot drive en-US on a 55-mph road without being passed by en-US car after car doing at least 70-mph, or better. en-US My wife was almost killed nine years ago by en-US an aggressive driver whose speed was estien-US -en-US mated to have been 100-110 mph before he en-US rear-ended and totaled her car. He weaved en-US in behind her but couldnt pass because of a en-US dump truck in the other lane. People, slow en-US down obey speed limits and other traffic en-US laws before you injure or kill someone.en-US As a side note, our county and city comen-US -en-US missioners seem to want to raise taxes to en-US boost income. I have an idea: ENFORCE en-US TRAFFIC LAWS, and the fines will be more en-US than adequate for all the pet projects. en-USCelebrating pride

en-US 8 en-USPORT ST. LUCIE -The City Council en-US voted 4-1 April 9 to ask the State of Florida en-US to review and approve an amendment to the en-US Comprehensive Plan changing much of the en-US single-family residential zoning along Becken-US-en-US er Road to a new Office designation in order en-US to manage future growth along the corridor.en-US Council members originally tried to tacken-US-en-US le the transmittal hearing Feb. 26 but posten-US -en-US poned the discussion so the city planning en-US staff could hold a March meeting for addien-US -en-US tional public comment. During that meeten-US-en-US ing, Mayor Gregory Oravec asked Planning en-US Director Patti Tobin to provide a historical en-US overview of the roadway in question since en-US many long-time residents had questioned en-US him about an original plan developed by the en-US Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council en-US more than 10 years prior. During the en-US rescheduled hearing, Mayor Oravec quoted en-US from the TCRPC plan, explaining that the en-US city council of the time found it too cost en-US prohibitive and shelved the majority of it.en-US They have some dos and donts, he said. en-US No six-laning of Becker, they want the trafen-US -en-US fic calming and landscaped medians, wide en-US sidewalks, street lighting, bicycle paths and en-US bike racks, covered bus stops for children en-US and all the different land uses.en-US The latest plan drafted by Ms. Tobin and en-US her staff recommends changing the future en-US land use of nearly 200 acres along the four-en-US mile corridor between I-95 and the Florida en-US Turnpike primarily to a new Office designaen-US -en-US tion. In addition to the Office zoning, en-US approximately 20 acres would be changed to en-US limited commercial, 59 acres to medium en-US density residential, seven acres to mixed-en-US use and nearly 10 acres left in open space. en-US Mayor Oravec balked at the plans proposal en-US to potentially send office buildings four en-US blocks inward from Becker Road.en-US That is way more intense that I was hopen-US -en-US ing for, and Im not going to be able to supen-US -en-US port this plan and carry it forward, he said. en-US I feel like tactically we just put some land en-US uses in there, and I dont think that we had a en-US strategy that really shared the vision of what en-US this is going to look like. I dont think that en-US we thought about creating 83 acres of addien-US -en-US tional office space that intrudes into single en-US family.en-US At least one member of the public, Diana en-US Morrison, concurred with the mayor.en-US Im concerned about empty buildings, en-US and I dont want to see a lot of development en-US in this area where right now its a quaint en-US neighborhood and have it turned into a lot en-US of empty office buildings or retail or anyen-US -en-US thing of that nature, she said. I dont want en-US buildings built just for the sake of building en-US and then not have them occupied. en-US Ms. Tobin, however, defended the wider en-US office zoning of the latest plan, saying the en-US city needed to learn its lesson from the tight en-US strip mall development along Port St. Lucie en-US Boulevard.en-US I can tell you that 125 feet of depth is en-US very difficult to develop in -were dealing en-US with that now between Airoso and U.S. 1, en-US she said. Having two or three lots on Port en-US St. Lucie Boulevard is not a very workable en-US project, and I think you can see the dynamen-US-en-US ics of that with the parking lot of the animal en-US hospital just east of here. I think weve en-US learned from our experiences in impleen-US -en-US menting these conversion areas over the last en-US 30 to 35 years that having these small sites en-US isnt beneficial. en-US Councilwoman Jolien Carballo admitted en-US shed never before seen the 10-year-old en-US TCRPC plan but liked many of the suggesen-US -en-US tions it put forth, such as plazas, rounden-US -en-US abouts and urban development similar to en-US Tradition. Vice-Mayor Martin, who along en-US with Ms. Tobin had helped organize the en-US neighborhood meetings, expressed frustraen-US -en-US tion that the conversation had suddenly en-US become focused on ideas that the city had en-US no money to implement.en-US Councilman John Carvelli -who cast the en-US lone dissenting vote -worried that city en-US planners had not taken into account the en-US potential traffic impact the nearby jobs coren-US -en-US ridor could have on Becker Road since it en-US connects two major north-south highways. en-US You go to St. Lucie West Boulevard en-US where I live, and the road is just getting en-US eaten up and beaten up by that heavy traffic en-US flow and it makes it hard for people to get in en-US and out of those plazas, he said. en-US Councilman Carvelli then asked Ms. en-US Tobin and her staff if they could tweak the en-US plan to include additional right of way along en-US Becker for potential future expansion to six en-US lanes, a request that further exasperated the en-US vice-mayor.en-US We said we dont want it that way, the en-US residents dont want that and planning en-US doesnt want that, Ms. Martin emphasized. en-US We lowered the intensity -that was the en-US whole part of this -and how can you plan en-US for a road in 10 or 15 years from now when en-US Becker Road is going to be the last to be en-US developed? So for you to see you want to en-US address a road when it doesnt even have en-US any development and when we dont really en-USknow 100 percent what its going to look like Verticals PlusFamily Owned & Operated Since 1989Custom Made BlindsCellular & Pleated Shades, Faux Wood & Wood Blinds, Shutters, Quality Verticals, Woven Woods, Mini Blinds & More 10% OFF( orders of $500 or more)Exp. 4/30/182201 S.E. The horse is out en-US of the barn and they want me to give them en-US advice on how to get it back. Most of these en-US car buyers went car shopping and bought en-US their car alone. Most of the complaints en-US involve verbal promises by the sales person, en-US not committed to writing. Bringing at least en-US one other person when youre car shopping en-US doesnt negate the importance of getting all en-US promises in writing, but substantially en-US lowers the chances of a car salesman trying en-US to pull a fast one. The salesman and his en-US manager know that, in court, two peoples en-US word trumps that of one.en-US A woman wrote me a letter in response to en-US one of my columns. Her husband had en-US recently passed away and this was the first en-US car she had bought on her own. The dealer en-US did not have the model car with the en-US accessories she wanted and was unable to en-US locate one at another dealership. She did en-US not want to decide without seeing the actual en-US car she wanted to buy but the salesman and en-US manger talked her into signing a buyers en-US order, assuring her that she was under no en-US obligation to buy. They also included two en-US accessories that she did not want because en-US they said that the manufacturer required en-US it. Ive heard of distributors ordering cars en-US with certain accessories from the manufacen-US -en-US turer which essentially makes them en-US standard, but never $250 floor mats en-US which was one of the accessories she en-US mentioned. I get a lot of emails, phone calls, en-US and letters from people who made a bad en-US deal in their car purchase and want to know en-US how they can get out of it. This is one of the en-US less egregious, but I chose it because it was en-US a simpler and shorter example.en-US There is strength in numbers when en-US shopping and negotiating to buy a car. In en-US fact, this applies to any serious decision in en-US life. You might be the sharpest, shrewdest en-US negotiator on the block, but your odds of en-US striking a better deal and not get taken en-US advantage of are enhanced when you have en-US others on your side. Personally, I make a en-US habit of always having at least one partner en-US when I am engaged in a serious, adversarial en-US decision-making process. When meeting en-US with those on the other side, I make it a en-US point to arrive with at least as many people en-US as they have present. One reason is the en-US psychological factor. When you are in an en-US office by yourself with two or three others, en-US it can be intimidating. Another reason is en-US that you always have people on your side to en-US corroborate what was said. If a salesman or en-US a sales manager makes a verbal promise en-US that can be corroborated by a friend or two, en-US it is far less likely to be broken. It will also en-US hold up in court, if it must come to that. Of en-US course, the better solution is to see that all en-US promises are committed to writing.en-US Buying a car, especially a new car, is more en-US often than not, an emotional decision. en-US Having a friend or two with you can help en-US you make more of an analytical, logical en-US decision. Another point of view is always en-US useful when making an important decision. en-US Also, having one or two friends with you en-US slows down the process to a level more en-US easily absorbed and understood by you. A en-US friend will often think of a question you en-US should have asked but forgot.en-US Ideally you should bring someone with en-US you who is skilled in negotiation and en-US experienced in buying cars. However, if you en-US dont know someone like that, somebody is en-US better than nobody.en-US Please understand that asking a friends, en-US family member, or associates to join you in en-US the purchasing of a car is not a sign of en-US weakness; on the contrary, its a sign of en-US intelligence and a sign of understanding en-US how to stack the deck in your favor in a en-US negotiation.en-US By the way, most car dealers are unhappy en-US when prospective customers bring in en-US advisors and friends. Naturally they feel en-US that way because they recognize their en-US chances of making a fast, very profitable en-US sale are diminished. ON CARS en-USEARL STEWART

The Baby Otter Swim en-US School is a state-wide teaching plan that en-US helps children as young as 8-months-old en-US learn how to save themselves in the event en-US they fall into a pool or body of water and is en-US designed to make Florida a no-drownen-US-en-US ing-state, according to creators Marlene en-US Bloom and Mindy York.en-US They said the tragedy is that drowning en-US deaths in Florida are far too common in the en-US Sunshine State, which holds the moniker as en-US Drowning Capitol of the U.S. Their take en-US on the subject is that the drowning deaths en-US are usually a completely preventable occuren-US -en-US rence.en-US While they may have a long way to go, en-US Ms. Bloom, 71, and Ms. York, 62, earlier this en-US month signed on vacation destination giant, en-US Club Med in Port St. Lucie, to help further en-US their mission. Best of all, Club Med has en-US opened its Sandpiper Bay Resort to local en-US area residents, who can now have their en-US youngest of children learn to swim in just en-US five, 30-minute private lessons.en-US It is designed to ensure that even the en-US youngest of children are safe in the water, en-US and the Baby Otter Swim School is now celen-US-en-US ebrating 40 years in business and may possien-US-en-US bly be the worlds fastest learn-to-swim and en-US water survival program.en-US Also, new franchises are popping up en-US every day, and on the website are instrucen-US-en-US tions on how nearly anybody can join in the en-US effort and help save lives. Licensing and en-US training take only a few weeks and then en-US people can earn money while teaching en-US young children to save themselves. Ms. York en-US added one story that involved a young boy en-US who ended up in a pool while attending a en-US backyard gathering with his parents. The en-US child had previously gone through the proen-US-en-US gram and fell into the water unbeknownst en-US to anybody there and eventually came en-US inside the house soaking wet, and the paren-US -en-US ents quickly realized that he had made his en-US way out of the pool due to the training he en-US received from Baby Otter.en-US In the pursuit of establishing Florida as a en-US Zero-Drowning State, Club Med has starten-US -en-US ed using Baby Otter-licensed instructors en-US and its proprietary Turn, Kick, Reach sysen-US -en-US tem at its lone Florida property Sandpipen-US-en-US er Bay resort in Port St. Lucie. en-US Ms. Bloom is an elementary school teachen-US -en-US er who founded the company 40 years ago en-US after being unable to find someone to teach en-US her 18-month daughter because she was en-US too young, while Ms. York, joined Ms. en-US Bloom 10 years later after finding her own en-US 18-month old daughter at the bottom of her en-US backyard pool and performing CPR to save en-US her life. Thirty years later, Ms. Yorks daughen-US -en-US ter is one of the companys top instructors.en-US I called the Red Cross and the YMCA, en-US and she wasnt 3 years old yet, so they said en-US there were no programs for her, Ms. Bloom en-US said. So I spent the summer experimenting en-US with my friends children, and came up with en-US this five-day Turn, Kick Reach program, en-US which saves lives now instead of taking en-US months for a child to learn how to swim.en-US I realized that Marlene was really onto en-US something, and as an educator she realized en-US that lesson plans that work in a classroom en-US would work as well in the pool, Ms. York en-US said. So, what sets us apart from others is en-US that we are program-based and not lesen-US -en-US son-plan based children can learn to en-US swim to the steps, to the wall and if they fall en-US into the water they can turn around and get en-US out.en-US The company ambassador is baseball Hall en-US of Fame outfielder Andre The Hawk Dawen-US-en-US son, 62, who is now a Miami resident who en-US utilized Ms. Bloom and Ms. Yorks program en-US to learn how to swim at the age of 49.en-US For more information, visit https://babyen-US-en-US otterswimschool.com/.en-USBaby Otter swim en-US program prevents en-US drowningsen-USBy Gaylon Parkeren-USgparker@hometownnewsol.com Marlene Bloom and Mindy York en-GBand 10th Street), Fort Pierce. en-US 12 Were Here Day and NightFULL CIRCLE SENIOR CARE until its time to look at redesigning the road en-USjust does not make sense to me.en-USMayor Oravec then attempted to mediate en-US the dispute.en-US Its okay to have different opinions, he en-US said. If Councilman Carvelli wants to en-US abdicate this as a six-lane road, then we en-US should create zoned right-of-way that other en-US places have, thats completely legitimate. en-US Weve got to respect the diversity of opinen-US-en-US ions so we can get to the best possible en-US place.en-US Vice-Mayor Martin then offered an olive en-US branch to the mayor in hopes of winning en-US his support for the amendment. en-US I have no problem modifying it even en-US further to maybe take out some of the en-US Office, she said. But we all said -and en-US mayor you also said -that single-family en-US homes dont belong on major arterials. So en-US what do we put in place of Office? If were en-US going to go back to residential, thats exactly en-US what we said that we dont want to see.en-US Id like to see more multi-family, he en-US replied. I was hoping it would be much en-US more multi-family in nature.en-US Ms. Tobin emphasized, however, that en-US most residents expressed a preference for en-US office buildings over multi-family housing. en-US You and I know Mayor as planners that en-US [multi-family] is the next transitional use, en-US but that use goes on 24 hours as opposed to en-US most offices, which are generally eight to en-US five, she explained. If we had not received en-US that input from both those meetings, I en-US think we would have made major changes, en-US but I think the vice mayor can attest to the en-US concern with the multi-family in this and en-US other areas of the city.en-US Mayor Oravec ultimately cast his hat into en-US the ring as well. en-US You know I never have my mind made en-US up when I come here because how could en-US you without taking testimony from the en-US public and also listening to the debate from en-US the Council, he said. So I find the vice en-US mayors request for camaraderie and teamen-US-en-US work to be compelling so Im going to vote en-US in support of it tonight.en-US Ms. Tobin emphasized the state would en-US have 30 days to return any suggested en-US amendment revisions to the city, and then en-US the Council would have 180 days to pass the en-US final version in order to utilize a $40,000 en-US state grant for crafting the associated land en-US development regulations. en-USBeckeren-USFrom page 8 en-USby Tradition Land Company, and Mr. Blacken-US -en-US burn calls the area a win-win for the citys en-US future economic expansion. City Electric en-US has set up shop in the area in the coming en-US months, and Torrey Pines, Tradition Medien-US-en-US cal Center and Keiser University all call the en-US area home. If the city is able to acquire the en-US land and become the developer, it could en-US mean quicker approval of potential sites and en-US could create more than 20,000 jobs over en-US time.en-US The company has reached its developen-US-en-US ment limits and were trying to recoup as en-US much of their money as possible, and that en-US land will soon be sold pertaining to the en-US remaining residential properties and the en-US commercial properties as well. en-US They have come to the city and said they en-US are going to exit the city, and sold lands to a en-US premier residential company called Maten-US -en-US tamy Homes, but that left the commercial en-US properties the industrial, light industrial, en-US the research properties they could not sell en-US those, and one of the reasons was that those en-US properties have a special assessment on en-US them that are pledged to repay the special en-US assessment-debt, Mr. Blackburn said. The en-US commercial properties sell fairly slowly, and en-US theyre saying they dont want to stay in an en-US absorb what were being told is 1,247 acres, en-US and theyve notified us that they are offering en-US the city the 1,247 acres of land, but that if we en-US dont accept it they will stop paying taxes on en-US it, and let it go for tax certificate sales and en-UStax sales.en-US So, instead of letting that happen, the city en-US has a chance to create jobs and become the en-US developer. That would help the city avoid en-US the potential legal wrangling that has en-US plagued City Center and start working on en-US bringing in companies to the spot where en-US new businesses can locate and ties up the en-US assessment payments that other potential en-US property owners might be making in the en-US event the land is sold.en-US We have to pay the debt service on the en-US binds for the infrastructure that exit off en-US of I-95, and those are all things the public en-US has benefited from, but the debt service is en-US probably 85 percent of the total tax bill, Mr. en-US Blackburn said. That total tax bill would be en-US about $5.1M per year, and $4.1M of that is en-US the debt service and that would have to paid en-US in any circumstance.en-US So what is at issue, with a pending vote by en-US the Port St. Lucie City Council in late May, is en-US whether the city will assume ownership on en-US the properties and get to work encouraging en-US companies to move to town. Also, the total en-US tax bill decreases every time a piece of propen-US -en-US erty is sold along the way.en-US It seems more prudent, and a better busien-US -en-US ness decision, that if youre going to have to en-US pay the debt service anyway to not let the en-US jobs corridor get caught in a morass of legal en-US issues and financial issues, Mr. Blackburn en-US said. This lets the momentum thats hapen-US-en-US pening in the Southern Grove area continen-US -en-US ues and it lets new businesses buy property en-US from the city to grow their business and en-US grow jobs in our community.en-US For more information, visit en-US www.cityofen-US -en-US psl.comen-US or call 772-871-5225.en-USCorridoren-USFrom page 1 en-USslcsafetyfest.com/en-US en-US Family Reading Festival:en-US Ninth annual en-US event will be held in combination with the en-US Safety Fest. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., First Data Field en-US (Mets Stadium), 525 N.W. After hibernating all winter, its time to en-UScheck your equipmenten-USMen-USany year-round Florida golfers en-US take the winter off. Between en-US crowded tee sheets and higher en-US prices, many choose to let their games en-US hibernate. By now, some of you are dusting en-US off your clubs in anticipation of that first en-US round since late last year. If you plan to play en-US your best golf this spring and summer, its en-US important that your equipment is up to the en-US task.en-US You need to take a good look at your en-US clubs. Examine the heads, grips and shafts. en-US Most importantly, make sure that they are en-US as ready to play as you.en-US Start with your grips. Grips are probably en-US the most overlooked part of a club. Since en-US the grip is the only place that you actually en-US contact the club, your grips must be in good en-US shape for you to maintain control and hit en-US good shots.en-US If your grips are simply dirty, wash them. en-US Its a good idea to wash your grips every en-US couple of weeks in soap and water. Between en-US the dirt and oil on your hands, and the dirt en-US and dust that settle into your golf bag, youd en-US be surprised how much crud you need to en-US remove.en-US Have you ever watched the pro caddies as en-US they hand a club to or take a club from their en-US player? They almost always wipe the grip en-US off with a towel. Players want a dry and en-US clean grip for every shot. Many have their en-US grip s replaced every month or so on Tour. en-US Of course, they get all this done by the club en-US or grip companies that they have contracts en-US with, but it does give you an idea how en-US important your grips truly are. en-US If your grips are hard or show wear in en-US spots from where you hold the club, then en-US its time for replacements. When you en-US replace your grips, take a look at your hand en-US size in relationship to the grip size. Properly en-US sized grips are an easy change to make and en-US one that will make you a more consistent en-US player. en-US Larger grips take your wrists out of your en-US swing and may help you if youre hitting an en-US ugly hook. Smaller grips will help to en-US promote a release and may help get rid of a en-US push or fade. Think about making sure that en-US all of your grips, except for your putter, are en-US the same. This is one way to allow your en-US hands to have the same feel with every club en-US in the bag. en-US The shafts are next. Check for rust. en-US Surface rust can be removed with WD-40 en-US or a No. 2 pencil. If the rust returns, its time en-US to replace the shaft before it fails. A more en-US serious shaft problem would be a dent, ding en-US or bend in a steel shaft. These make the en-US shaft weak and inconsistent, and it should en-US be replaced to avoid having it fail during a en-US swing.en-US With graphite shafts en-US check to make sure that en-US the shafts arent wearing en-US where they touch the en-US top of your golf bag. en-US Over time, many en-US graphite shafts will have en-US a worn patch from en-US rubbing against the bag. en-US A good solution to this en-US is using covers that en-US protect that area or a en-US bag designed to protect en-US graphite shafts.en-US How do the cluben-US -en-US heads look? Clean out en-US the grooves with a brush en-US and some soap and water. The buildup of en-US dirt in the grooves prevents the club from en-US imparting the proper spin on the ball. A en-US ball with little or no spin acts like a knuckle en-US ball in the air and doesnt penetrate the en-US wind or fly very far.en-US I am surprised at some of the clubs that I en-US see when I play. Ive seen wedges with so en-US much dirt in the grooves that its no wonder en-US they cannot stop a shot or put spin on the en-US ball.en-US Lastly, check the loft and lie. Clubs can en-US get out of alignment through normal play. en-US A properly lofted set will not have any en-US distance gaps. en-US A club that sits too flat will cause the toe en-US to dig in, opening the clubface giving you a en-US slice or fade. A club that sits too upright will en-US allow the heel to dig in, closing the clubface, en-US producing a hook.en-US If youre not sure how to check all of en-US these items yourself, call your local shop. en-US Most shops charge a small fee to adjust your en-US clubs, and many will check them for free en-US when replacing your grips.en-US This weekend take some time to check en-US your clubs and get them ready for the en-US season. Who knows, maybe your swing isnt en-US what needs to be fixed.en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years. en-US 17 en-USBen-USeing a chef can be like the character en-US from the TV series Monk, who had en-US outstanding powers of observation he en-US called a blessing and a curse.en-US Being a chef, I have been trained in the en-US culinary arts, which I take seriously. That en-US has been a blessing for me.en-US Hot food should be served hot and cold en-US food served cold is an important part of en-US that training and that is where the curse en-US comes in. My family does not understand en-US that simple action. en-US People everywhere that love to cook will en-US tell you they get their satisfaction from en-US cooking and watching others enjoy their en-US labors. Unfortunately, in creating a great en-US hot meal and then serving it cold, there is en-US no satisfaction. That is the curse for a chef en-US a great meal gone bad. en-US My wife came from a large family and hot en-US food probably wasnt high on the list at en-US dinner, because just trying to get everyone en-US fed was the goal. Serving food at the proper en-US temperature for a chef is a rule that cannot en-US be broken. It goes against all of my training en-US and drives me totally bonkers. en-US Let me give you a few examples. Its time en-US to eat and I announce dinner is ready, then en-US everyone disappears. People are going to en-US the bathroom, going out to get the mail, en-US answering the phone. It's dinner time!en-US So now I announce dinner 5 minutes en-US early to give everyone a chance to prepare en-US to eat. When I make salad, which is usually en-US every day, I keep it in the refrigerator just en-US prior to eating and not letting it sit on the en-US table for 10 minutes. I also keep the salad en-US dressing refrigerated as well. I have the en-US oven on low to keep food warm, and I place en-US the serving plate in the oven also on very en-US low just prior to eating. Hot food hot en-US plate, its not that hard. en-US Here are a few tips when serving en-US pancakes or French toast. Heat the syrup or en-US honey in the microwave for a few seconds. en-US Next time you make steak or chops and en-US want steak sauce, heat it up in the microen-US -en-US wave for a few seconds. en-US If you have a ceiling fan in the dining en-US area, turn it off. It will cool off food quicker. en-US Serve hot food hot, cold food cold and this en-US will make everyone happy, especially me.en-USSWEET POTATO SOUP en-USServes 4-6 (serve hot)en-US Ingredientsen-US 1-1/2 pounds baked sweet potatoes,en-US peeled or (3-3/4 cups canned sweet en-US potatoes)en-US 2 tablespoons butteren-US 1 cup red onions, choppeden-US 2 cups celery, choppeden-US 2 teaspoons ground gingeren-US 5 cups chicken stocken-US 1 cup half and half creamen-US 1 teaspoon white ground pepperen-US 1 tablespoon honey en-US Directionsen-US Heat the butter in a six-quart pot and en-US cook over medium heat. It is also a great time to en-US think about how we can protect and en-US beautify our environment. This task can be en-US as simple as planting a single tree to en-US beautify our yard or possibly planting a en-US colorful garden for all to enjoy on your en-US property or even to donate your time to a en-US local garden club to help beautify an area of en-US your city or town. With the growing needs en-US of our fragile environment, now more then en-US ever, 2013 will be an important year to do en-US everything we can to both beautify and en-US balance our environment. en-US The idea of Earth Day was initiated in en-US 1962 as a way to get people aware of what is en-US going on in our environment. It started en-US with President Kennedy in 1963 when he en-US took a five-day conservation tour of our en-US nation. The first official Earth Day was on en-US April 22, 1970. Since then, Earth Day has en-US blossomed into a national celebration en-US where people initiate ideas that can help en-US make our environment more eye appealing en-US and a better place to live.en-US With all the hype on how we are en-US depleting our cypress forests by the use of en-US cypress mulch, there are many other en-US natural alternatives we can use that are en-US both functional and also will save our en-US natural resources. One thing we can use en-US that we all have plenty of is natural grass en-US clippings. Thats right; grass clippings can en-US make an excellent mulching material that en-US you can use on almost all your plants and en-US flowers. You do need to be sure, however, en-US that your turf has not been recently treated en-US with any herbicides. The herbicides may en-US damage some of your tender plants. Place en-US the clippings around your plants in layers. en-US Make each of your layers thin and do not en-US make it too thick, as the mulch will en-US produce a smell. Apply the next thin layer en-US after the initial layer has been allowed to en-US dry out. As the clippings decompose, they en-US will produce a fertilizing effect on your en-US plants. The clippings tend to add nutrients en-US back to the soil as they decay and work en-US their way into the dirt. Remember, every en-US time you buy a bag of mulch, trees had to en-US be cut down to produce it!en-US Another great natural mulching en-US material is pine needles. This en-US material is not suitable for all en-US plants, but is great for the majority en-US of plants we use in this part of en-US Florida. You can use pine clippings en-US on any plants that are acid loving. en-US This list can include ixoria, en-US hibiscus, bottlebrush, azalea, en-US gardenia, junipers, and banana en-US trees along with many other plants en-US that require a high acid content in en-US the soil. Not only do many of these en-US natural remedies save resources, en-US they also save you money. Doing en-US large areas of your yard with en-US commercial products can cost a en-US fortune. With the money you save en-US on mulching materials, you will be en-US able to purchase lots more colorful flowers!en-US Many of your favorite plants that you en-US have in your yard can be easily propagated en-US into new plants without the need to keep en-US buying new plants. Roses are a great en-US example of this. In the spring, you can en-US choose cuttings that are healthy and green en-US and they will make good candidates for en-US cuttings. Using a sharp knife cut off the soft en-US tip of the cane and then cut it into 4to en-US 5-inch pieces. Each piece should have at en-US least two nodes and some leaves. Strip off en-US the bottom leaves to expose a node, and en-US then plant the cutting in moist soil and en-US keep it in bright shade and high humidity. en-US You can use containers covered with plastic en-US bags, or set them in the ground in the shade en-US and cover them with plastic jugs. Either en-US method should work fine. Take several en-US cuttings to be sure you have success with at en-US least several. You are now on your way to en-US propagating your own Rose garden!en-US Remember, earth day is April 22, 2018.en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape.
