LUCIE COUNTY The St. Lucie C ounty School Board has chosen two school principals to become new executive directors of schools for the district beginning this fall. Ly dia Martin, outgoing principal at Southport Middle School in Port St. Lucie, and P am Dampier, principal of Lincoln Park A cademy since last August, will share supervision of school principals throughout the district beginning with the 2014-15 school y ear. D eputy Superintendent Mark Rendell says the district has been using assistant superintendents for principal supervision in r ecent years but decided to re-implement executive directors to better support school administration and save the district money in the long run. This was part of the reorganization of the district, Mr. Rendell said. These executive directors will be solely responsive for supporting the schools. As part of the district reorganization, the number of assistant superintendents is being cut from eight to three, with most being reassigned to different positions. Mr. R endell himself was promoted from assistant superintendent to his current position, where hell now oversee the districts human r esources department as part of his new duties. We are able to see the colors and imagine ourselves in the painted landscape or scene without much effort. Howe ver, for those who are visually impaired, enjoying a painting is something usually unattainable. That was until Horst Mueller, an unconventional artist out of Martin County, decided to make art and paintings something those who were blind could enjoy too. The visually challenged shouldnt be deprived of the beauty of art, Mr. M ueller said while showing me around his art studio in Jensen Beach. Everything in my studio, that I create, I say, please, do touch it feel it decide what beautiful scene through your hands. and sculptures are beautiful to look at, he paints, sculpts and constructs beautiful art pieces which offer a hands on appeal. M y motto, so to speak, is Even hands can see, and that sums up what Im creating, Mr. Mueller said. Although my art pieces are colorful, and some would say extravagant to the eye, what is the most incredible aspect is how they feel. Someone who cant actually see, for instance, the hills and mountains and moon and stars in a certain piece, can feel them and then can translate what each tiny piece of the painting looks like. When they are finished, they have the entire piece in their mind and they have, too, enjoyed the art. Mr. Mueller not only paints for the visually impaired, he teaches children with many different challenges how to create. I teach workshops to children with A utism across the Treasure Coast, Mr. M ueller said. I provide them with a piece of plywood and give them the materials they need to manipulate substance into art. The teachers or parents with them are absolutely shocked at the beauty they create. Im very visual and I bounce around the room helping the children, talking with them and guiding them, but they are the ones who actually create the piece. Its so r ewarding when you see a child who may not be able to tie his or her shoes create, what I consider, a masterpiece. Mr. Mueller, who was born in 1941in Germany, has spent his life owning companies and travelling the globe, but he said that none of those things compare to the work hes doing now. Whether Im speaking in front of one thousand people in a huge auditor ium in Berlin or speaking to a room of five teachers here on the Treasure C oast, my message is always the same: close your eyes and open your hearts, because even hands can see. Mr. Muellers work, workshop information and gallery locations can be found online at www.even-hands-cansee.com. tor positions. Its a cost-cutting measure, but we believe its going to provide more direct support for the schools. B oth former principals will be r esponsible for overseeing about 16 principals each, Mr. Rendell added. School B oard Superintendent Genelle Yost says Mrs. Martin is an effective instructional leader who will share the skills and talents shes honed over the last several y ears as an administrator to help district principals become better leaders. H er ability to analyze data and communicate strategies for school improvement make her a natural fit for the position of executive director, Ms. Yost said. After beginning as a science teacher at For est Grove Middle School in 1996, Mrs. Mar tin served as assistant principal at both St. Lucie West K-8 (formerly St. L ucie West Middle School) and Palm P ointe K-8. She was promoted to principal of Southport Middle School in August 2010, where she says she helped promote a collaborative mindset among the staff. W e tracked and analyzed data in grade level department groups and worked on developing the best strategies to deliver instruction, Mrs. Martin said. I built a level of trust with teachers, which encourages innovation in meeting the needs of all students. Mrs. Dampier began teaching at Forest Grove Middle School in 1994 and became an assistant principal at Lakewood Park Elementary in 2000. She became principal of St. Lucie West K-8 (formerly St. Lucie West Middle School) in August of 2005, where she spent the next several years and oversaw the campus successful transition to a K-8 facility in a very short period of time. The most challenging part of transitioning was having less than six months to merge an existing middle school into a K-8 school community, Ms. Dampier said. The focus was on creating a school-wide culture of working as a team to support the schools vision and mission. Ms. Yost credits that successful transition to Mrs. Dampiers foresight and focus on teamwork. S he is a visionary who has the ability to foster support and collaborative relationships amongst her staffs for the united purpose of enhancing student achievement, Ms. Yost said. Mrs. Dampier says shes excited to be able to begin sharing her own experience and vision with principals throughout the district. This is a wonderful opportunity to work with principals to improve teaching and learning in all schools, she said. Mrs. Martin said she hopes her new executive director position will provide her the opportunity for continual growth so she can have a positive impact on district schools. I hope to support principals with the S t. Lucie County Framework for teaching and learning, just as I have supported teachers and been an advocate for them for district resources and support.F riday, June 27, 20142Hometown News PORT ST. BusinessBarber Shop brings old-school flavor to new-style cutsPORT ST. LUCIE For 60 years, Frank Ca rf agna Sr. has been cutting hair. He started in his fathers barber shop as a y oung boy in Queens, N.Y., sweeping up and paying attention. It seemed only natural that he get his barber license and follow in the family tradition. S ixty years later, his son, Frank, Jr., has followed suit and they both make sure r esidents of Port St. Lucie are looking their best. W e do everything, Frank Jr., said. W e offer haircuts to men, women and children. Its a multicultural barbershop and we keep up with all of the latest trends. The barbershop, which has nine chairs and eight barbers at any given time, is centered around Frank Sr., who has cut his hours down to three days a w eek, but who still has an enormous presence at the shop. I have people who come in all the time and wait for me to cut their hair, Fr ank Sr., said with a smile. They wont go to anyone else, he said, teasing the other barbers who sat and listened to his every word. Ive been doing this a long time. When I first started, all we really had to know was how to do a scissor cut. Then The Beatles came over and everyone started to grow their hair longer. Now, the younger kids want clipper cuts. We have evolved with the styles, but we still offer a good old-fashioned scissor cut. Fr ank Jr. has been working alongside his father for many years. I got my barbering license in 1978, he said. There arent too many fatherson businesses that have been around for this long, he said with pride. B ecause of the amount of barbers r eadily available, wait time at the shop is minimal. W e are a complete package, Frank Jr. said. From the moment the customer walks in and sits in the chair to the blower that gets the hair off them when they are finished, we make sure everything is taken care of. We want every customer to leave happy. M en, women and children can all expect to get the latest styles at Franks B arber Shop. From flat tops to fades, scissor cuts to line ups and of course, the perfect shave, Franks has a barber with the experience for anyone who walks through the door. How many?Im wondering how many youth have to be murdered before someone actually does something. So youve got extra money to help with enforcing the laws? Does anyone really think thats going to help? There are no jobs, no laws enforced and nothing for any of the kids to do. This is a dead end town. F amily values? The breakdown of family values and morals are not due to same-sex marr iage. It has to do with the divorce rate, domestic abuse, pedophile priests, violent video games and lack of parental controls, to list a few. S top trying to blame same-sex marr iage for all the issues that have been building up for the last two decades, long before same-sex marriage came to the forefront. S ame-sex couples and heterosexual couples are not perfect; so, instead of sitting around ranting, you and your Christian community should get up and be part of the solution to the problems.Help the wounded warriorsEach day, as I watch television and see commercials about the Wounded W arrior Program, my blood just boils. Am I the only one who feels this way? He re are men and women, who fought for this nation, who have lost limbs and/or suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, who have to depend on a civilian organization and donations of citizens to support these individuals. Not one penny comes from our government. Why? Almost all the news reports tell us how our government is squandering millions of dollars on pork barrel programs, which in many cases aren't worth a hill of beans. These pork barrel dollars could go to our wounded warr iors. A dditionally, we have a foreign aid program, wherein we give money to countries that hate us. A number of these countries getting military foreign aid use these weapons to kill their own people and start civil wars. And here is the worst part of foreign aid none of these countries receiving American foreign aid has lifted the country out of poverty. Why dont we have DOMESTIC AID to help the homeless and our veterans? Why dont we have DOMESTIC AID for the children who go to bed hungry? Why dont we have DOMESTIC AID to help the elderly? Why dont we have DOMESTIC AID to provide training to everyone who needs it, so we can improve the lives of everyone? Why dont we have DOMESTIC AID to educate the people in the projects and clean up the projects? Why shouldnt we have DOMESTIC AID? Doesnt Charity begin at home? At this moment, we have the worst C ongress, whose members are only concerned with retaining their power, their existence and their reelection. These politicians have made government their vocation. They are not statesmen/women. They are only concerned with their careers, their survival and their bank accounts. This is why we need term limits. If you want to help, write to your r epresentatives and senators. Tell them whats on your mind. If their actions do not support what is best for the survival and future of this nation, then dont support them in their bid to be reelected. Hit the closed caption buttonI cannot understand why, when you go to all types of medical facilities, the TV sets are always on. How ever, none of them have the closed captioning on. The rooms are large, and the TVs cannot be heard. The majority of patients are of the age where hearing is a problem. After all, the technology to close caption the shows was put there for a reason. Lets use it.Murder vs. killing? What is the difference between murder and kill? Either way, someone dies! That to me is the sadness in my heart. The sickness in the heart to murder or kill to gain is the greatest sadness that exists in God's heart and many like me. What do you gain? Why is this spreading more and more all throughout the world? Every day, we find better ways to murder or kill mankind, and yes, even animals! Dogs, cats and other kinds of animals (are) abused and killed and exploited for the gain of money. How sad, how very sad that we have done this to all.Unattended kidsIve taken the time to visit some local parks. Some have fountains and splash pads and some just have slides and swings... but you know what they all have in common? Unattended kids. P lease, parents, a slide is not a babysitter. Do a better job. Youre at Earl Stewart undercover car dealerEarl Stewart is the owner and general manager of Earl Stewart Toyota in Nor th Palm Beach. The dealership is located at 1215 N.Federal Highway in L ake Park.Visit www.earlstewarttoyota.com, call (561) 358-1474,fax (561) 658-0746 or email earl@estoyota.com.You may have seen episodes of the very popular reality TV show, U ndercover Boss. If not, the premise for this show is that the CEOs of companies disguise themselves as just another employee and infiltrate their own company. Their purpose is to learn what is really going on when their employees think no one is looking. What these bosses find out is often surprising, shocking and always very entertaining. Undercover bosses find, not only very bad employee behavior, but also very good. Of course they fire the bad employees and handsomely r eward the good ones. In a recent episode, the CEO of Menchies Frozen Y ogurt, Amit Kleinberger, bought one good employee a new car. He paid for the college education of another. He fired a third employee who was doing terrible things which hurt his companys reputation with their customers. Of course, the CEOs must disguise themselves so that they arent r ecognized. Ive never gone undercover in my o wn car dealership, but I regularly do the next best thing. I hire people to mystery shop my company. I would do it myself, but I have only 148 employees and they know me too well not to r ecognize me even in disguise. Going undercover or using others to infiltrate y our company is the only surefire way a boss can really know whats going on within his business. Youve heard the expressions, When the cats away, the mice will play and Dont tell me what y ou think I want to hear; tell me the truth. I know that a lot of car dealers, o wners and general managers, read this column and my blog. Mr. Car D ealer...This one is for you. If youre the owner or general manager of a car dealership in South Florida, you probably dont like me very much. For seven years I did a live radio show with my wife, Nancy, which was critical of many car dealers. In fact, I mystery shopped your dealerships and told our r adio audience what happenedthe good, the bad, and the ugly. I also write about your dealerships in this column and my blog. I wrote a book about y our shenanigans, Confessions of a R ecovering Car Dealer. I believe in giving anybody the benefit of the doubt. I know that car dealers can be like any businessman and have things go on inside their businesses of which they are unaware. Therefore, Im suggesting that car dealers that think my allegations are totally unsubstantiated and untrue go find out for themselves. Send in a mystery shopper to find out what r eally happens when a prospective customer or a current customer comes in to buy a car or have their car serviced. Right now all a car dealer knows is what his managers and r eports tell him. Nobody likes to tell the boss what he doesnt want to hear. C ustomer satisfaction surveys are very easy to manipulate. Most customers are surveyed by email and car dealers will accidentally get the wrong email address for an angry customer or r eward a customer with a free tank of gas for a good survey. S ome CEOs of larger dealerships like the Penske Automotive Group, A utoNation, and even the Ed Morse A uto Group could actually go undercover just like in the TV series, Undercover Boss. Roger Penske, Mike J ackson, and Ted Morse could disguise themselves and find out whats really going on behind closed doors. I guarantee Roger, Mike, and Ted that they will be shocked and surprised at how some of their employees are treating their customers. How can I be so sure of that? Its because Ive mystery shopped dealerships run by each of these CEOs. I regularly shop my competition to keep a competitive edge just like I shop my own company to find out whats really happening. By the way, Roger, Mike, and Ted, once y our employees find out that you are mystery shopping them, it has a deterrent effect. That employee who may be inclined to take advantage of a customer will be more reluctant knowing he might be his boss or an agent for his boss. ON CARSEARL STEWART

It wasnt too long ago that shredders were things found only in offices to destroy confidential documents, social security numbers were commonly used as identification numbers and people didnt think twice about throwing things like canceled checks in the trash. T oday things are different, personal shredders are a common household appliance, the Social Security N umber is no longer used as a public identification number and most people now think twice about just tossing canceled checks and other confidential information in the trash. The reason for these changes is that identity theft is the fastest growing white collar crime in the nation. B eing a computer technician, I am consulted by people and businesses on how to protect personal and private information. At the start of these consultations we go through a question and answer period where I try to assess where the risks are (what kinds of information are at r isk, how that information is stored and how that information may be vulnerable) and the more I do this, the more I see certain patterns immerge. F irst, there seems to be a misconception that identity theft is primar ily a financial issue. I find that many people are surprised to learn that you can have your identity stolen and never have it show up on y our credit report or even have the event be related to a bank account or credit card. If your identity is stolen it could be used to get medical treatment in y our name and next thing you know it your medical records are now corrupted with someone elses blood type and medical history a bad situation that your credit monitoring service wont necessarily catch. Or perhaps an identity thief might use y our good name as an alias while committing a crime. Again a credit monitoring service wont alert you when this happens; you are likely to find out about it when the police show up at your door with a warrant because the guy using your name never showed up in court. A second misconception that I run into over and over is what I call the locking the barn after the horse has been stolen syndrome; people tend to get lulled into a false sense of security once they start enacting good habits like securing their computers, shredding personal information and actively taking steps to protect their identities. Now, dont get me wrong, these are definitely some good habits people must get into but even if your computer and your information is locked up tight, keep in mind your information is already out there in the world. As we go through life and do common things like apply for loans, medical insurance, drivers licenses and such, we are invariably giving out that same information that we are protecting at home. The question y ou need to ask yourself is how many companies out there already have my information and are these companies taking the same steps to safeguard my information as I am? In most cases yes but unfortunately in many cases that answer is no; just about every week we can hear on the news about some organization that has a computer stolen or somehow loses a bunch of peoples information. Sometimes millions of identities are compromised. Another misconception is, "What does it matter if someone steals my identity? It's not like I'm rich or anything so they aren't going to get anything from me." B ut the cold reality is that we are all vulnerable and even though it may only take an identity thief a minute to steal someone's identity, it can take years for the victim to get it r estored. OK, so, it's a problem that we all face. The question now is, what can we do about it? How do I protect myself online? U pdate your virus protection software regularly. Use a firewall for extra protection. Do not download files or open e-mail attachments from unknown individuals; they may contain a computer virus or other malware. Be fore disposing of an old computer, have the hard drive reformatted to "wipe" or overwrite your hard drive. Av oid using the same password for multiple services (if one gets compromised its very easy to get into all of them). These are just a few of the basic tips you can use to protect your data but even taking these precautions cannot protect you 100 percent. I dont know of anything that can. ST. LUCIE COUNTY Investigators shut down Fort Pierce-based drug ring that sold more than $10.4 million a year in illegal drugs, according to St. Lucie C ounty Sheriff Ken Mascara and Fort Pierce Police Chief R. Sean Baldwin. A year-long investigation has concluded with dozens of arrests as drug agents smashed a Fort Pierce-based drug ring that was selling more than $10.4 million worth of illegal drugs a year. Par ticipating agencies included the St. L ucie County Sheriffs Office, the State A ttorneys Office of the 19th judicial Circuit, the Fort Pierce Police Department, Dr ug Enforcement Administration, the F ederal Bureau of Investigation, the Bur eau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms. D etectives also received assistance from the Broward County Sheriffs Office and M etro Dade Police Department. I appreciate all the hard work by all the agencies that made this case possible, said Fort Pierce Police Chief Baldwin. This is a great example of how many agencies at all levels of the criminal justice system can work together to fight crime and make our community safer. The drug ring was supplying narcotics throughout the Treasure Coast and had ties throughout South and Central Florida, Sheriff Mascara said. In addition, the S heriff said that the narcotics traffickers we re affiliated and often associated with some of the areas local gang members. This information is still being investigated in an effort to gain more information into violence over the last several months. D etectives have obtained arrest warr ants charging approximately 28 individuals with 184 drug felonies totaling in excess of $6.7 million in bonds. The State At torneys Office will direct file an additional 50 or so felony drug charges on approximately 15 individuals. This is in addition to 51 defendants who have been arrested already for a multiple drug charges. PORT ST. LUCIE On June 21, an elderly Port St. Lucie resident received a phone call by a man claiming to be a repr esentative with Florida Power and Light. The man told the victim that according to their records she was three months delinquent on her utilities payment. The victim told the man that she had receipts proving that she had paid her bills; however, the man told her that her electricity was scheduled to be turned off next week if she didnt pay. The scammer instructed the victim to go to either CVS or Walgreens and purchase a Greendot Money Pack in the amount of $300. The victim did as r equested and purchased the Greendot Car d. Later the man called back and the victim gave him the information on the card. A couple of hours later the victim r eceived another call from the same scammer. This time the scammer told the victim that the Greendot card number she had given to him previously was inadvertently added to a wrong account and that she would have to get another $300 Greendot card. The man told her that she would be reimbursed for the error in the amount of $1,000, and payment would be delivered to her by an employee in the upcoming week. The victim then borrowed money from friends and relatives to get the second Greendot Money Card. The scammer called back again and the victim gave him the number of the second Greendot Car d. The victim then told her grandson about the transaction and he told her to immediately call police to report the scam. Po rt S t. Lucie Police is warning residents not to fall for the Greendot Card Scam. In the recent past scammers have tried to get people to buy Greendot Car ds to pay for FPL bills and traffic tickets. The Police Department wants citiz ens to be alert to these scams and to recognize that legitimate businesses and government agencies will not call the consumer to pay for services or bills only through Greendot Cards. If you receive a call wanting you to pay for services with a Greendot Card and y ou feel that it is a scam, you should immediately call your local police department.Hometown News PORT ST. PORT ST. LUCIE Most people dream of retiring to Florida. The sunny weather and relaxed environment is a dream come true, however, for Walter Pietrzak, his retirement to F lorida took a turn six years ago. After spending some time in the sun, the stars aligned and Mr. Pietrzak found himself in the perfect situation to take on the responsibility of owning a restaurant... something hed spent his life in New York doing. After mulling over the decision, the deciding factor was becoming partners with one of his favorite people; his daughter. Mr. Pietrzak and his daughter, Kristie Jocelyn decided that teaming up to run West End Grill in St. Lucie West was the perfect way to spend their days even if this was supposed to be days spent quietly enjoying retirement. I knew this would be a great opportunity to work with Kristie, Mr. Pietrzak said. Shes really my r ight arm. She basically runs this place and the more I phase out from being here, the more shell take over. The high-end spot for lunch and dinner has everything a diner could want. There is an outside area for those who want to appreciate the gorgeous south Florida weather. O utside fans keep the area cool, and umbrellas keep the sun at bay. I nside, the warm dcor is reminiscent of a upscale deli in New York. W ith flat screen televisions and a bar inside, sports enthusiast are at home watching a game while enjoying craft beer and delicious appetizers. Those who are in the mood for wine will find everything they desire. From glasses of whites and reds to bottles of champagne and wine tasting flights, wine-lovers will find the perfect accompaniment for dinner or dessert. Theres no end to what is served here, Mr. Pietrzak said. We change the menu all the time and offer things that arent on the menu. We dont treat the early bird crowd any different than the dinner crowd. Ev eryone gets the same service and the same pride goes into every meal. The menu offers appetizers such as their signature Calamari Fra Diablo, lightly fried calamari served with a spicy marinara sauce; Mozzarella Alla Marinara, fresh mozzarella breaded and fried served with tasty marinara sauce and fresh mozzarella and tomato. The lunch menu, which is served daily from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., includes charbroiled burgers, wraps, salads, New York style sloppy Joes, baby back ribs, fish and chips and a menu for children. There are always different daily specials which include items that are not found on the menu. I like to think that were two r estaurants in one, Mr. Pietrzak said. In the day time, were more like a deli youd find in New York. Thats the environment youll find. Thats the crowd thats here. In the evening, the deli turns into an upscale restaurant. Its amazing to see the transformation. At 4 p.m. the entire menu changes for dinner, with items such as New Yo rk strip steak, pork chops, shrimp scampi, pasta, Tuscany chicken, jumbo lump crab cake and panseared tuna, just to name a few. Dinner is served until 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The outside area comes alive Tuesday thru Saturday evenings with music and drink specials, like one of the most popular events, the bring y our own wine night. On Tuesday and Thursday evening, patrons can bring their own bottle of wine, (no corking fee) enjoy live music and delve into some of the delicious entrees offered. On Sundays, brunch is offered from 10 a.m. 2 p.m. A full breakfast menu is available, as well as M imosas and Hibiscus. Early bird specials are available daily from 46 p.m. W est End Grill is located at 1680 St. L ucie West Blvd,Suite 107,in Port St. L ucie. For more information, call (772) 343-1146 or visit them at www.pslwestendgrill.com.F riday, June 27, 201414Hometown News PORT ST. Sharing memories of Dodgertown With summer officially here, I tend to turn some of my attention to baseball. There was a time when baseball filled my childhood. I was a huge baseball fan and when Spring Training came around I was in heaven. In my teens I discovered that I could combine my two loves, baseball and golf. Thanks to the Los Angeles Dodgers and the wonderful complex known as Dodgertown in Vero Beach, I could roll into town with my sticks and my mitt and kill two birds with one stone. By arriving early enough I could get in nine holes at Dodgertown Golf Course and then catch the afternoon game between the Dodgers and another club. I had to arrive early though, as they would close the course for parking a few hours before the ball game. In 1948, Branch Rickey and co-owner, W alter OMalley, moved the Dodgers' spring training operations from Pensacola to a disused 80-acre naval training base in Vero Beach. During World War II, the base served as a training facility for dive-bomber pilots learning to fly night missions. On the same property where pilots practiced strafing and bombing, the duo brought nearly 600 players to chase fly balls, run bases, swat mosquitoes and stay somewhat sober during their lonely evenings. W ith the South still rampant with r acial prejudice, many of the black players would travel to Fort Pierce on their free time to find public courses where they could enjoy a round of golf. In 1953, OMalley had designed, with input from players and coaches, a pitch and putt golf course around a manmade lake on the property. B ecause space was limited and there we re only a few holes, OMalley decided in 1965 to build and maintain his own course, adjacent to Holman Stadium. He hired a pair of minority coaches, Jim G illiam, a former Dodger player and Pr eston Gomez to design the track. The nine-hole course opened in 1965 and was available to all the Dodger players as well as the public. Being an avid golfer, OMalley could often be found on the links. Ev en Kay OMalley, Walters wife, was often seen on the links with friends, including Leila Alston, wife of Dodgers' skipper Walt Alston. The course featured nine holes, played to a par of 36 from the back tees and measured 2,823-yards long. From the forward tees the course played 2,433yards long and the par was 35. The course was relatively flat with elevated greens and bunkers. Pine trees lined the fairways and water came into play on only a couple of holes. J ust past the leftfield mounds (there never were any outfield walls at Holman S tadium), sat the first tee. The opening hole was a par-5, playing just 452 yards. To get to the green in two, you had to go ov er the lake behind the third-base stands. W ith the course being right on the Dodgertown property, players could be found there pretty much any time they we re n t playing baseball. On a given day y ou could find Jackie Robinson, Duke S nider, Don Drysdale, Sandy Koufax, Roy C ampanella, Vin Scully or many more H all of Famers enjoying a round. M aury Wills learned the game of golf here. Being an African-American meant that many places werent open to him and his fellow players. He found solace on the course and learned the game. S adly the end came in 2004 when the Dodgers were sold. The new ownership found that todays players werent interested in playing the quaint course, r egardless of its history, and shut the doors. S oon after, the team picked up its bats, balls and mitts and moved its operation to Arizona. The Dodgers had spent 61 y ears in Vero Beach. The team, its players and fans were not just a part of the citys history; they were part of the city itself. I think about all the great players who walked those grounds. I think of how difficult it must have been for those African-American ballplayers to find things to do in those days, and how wonderful it was that OMalley built something for ALL of his players to enjoy.
