Thank y ou for making this a possibility. lenge them. They are Ken Pruitt, St. L ucie County property appraiser; Carol Hilson, member School Board District 2 and Kathryn Hensley, member School Board District 4. I am humbled and gratified, said Mr. Pruitt. The credit goes to the professionals that work in the office. Mr. Pruitt was elected to the position in 2010 during a special election when then-property appraiser J effrey Furst died from a stroke. I look forward to serving the public for another four ye ars, he said. Thanks to everyone for their support. Ms. Hensley will begin her fifth term on the school board in November, and is one of the longest-serving members on the board. She was first elected in 1996. I love St. Lucie County. It has become an area that is known for collaboration, Ms. Hensley said. Its a challenge to be in education right now. We need to keep our focus on whats best for the kids. Im pleased that my community has given me the opportunity to stay and work towards that. This will be Ms. Hilsons fourth term on the board, having first been elected in 2000. She currently serves as school board chairwoman, and qualified by petition for this years race. I just want to thank the community for their support, she said. I feel like we are moving forward and we r e a community on the r ise. I look forward to watching the programs we have been working on continue to develop.WinF rom page A1RideF rom page A1

Mr. Oravec was evaluating: John Michael Deal, interim police chief for the Altamonte Springs Police D epartment Craig Novick, township manager and public safety director in Franklin, N.J. Gerald Speziale Jr., deputy public superintendent of the New York-New Jersey Port Authority Police D epartment. Whoever is chosen will r eplace Brian Reuther, who r etired June 1. To ward the end of Mr. R euthers tenure, controversy erupted over decisions by Po rt S t. Lucie police officers to let a former assistant city attorney and an off-duty police officer go home, despite having apparently driven while under the influence. Police, however, said r esidents not connected with the city have been given the same courtesy under certain circumstances. Mr. Deal said he would have a zero tolerance position regarding driving under the influence. He would not allow any preferential treatment, he said. S imilarly, Mr. Novick said, he believes theres no discretion on whether to make any arrest of a drunk driver. N obody is above the law, he said. Mr. Speziale said officers should make arrests if probable cause exists for a driving under the influence arrest. Dur ing the forum, the three candidates answered general and specific questions individually. The general public submitted the questions. Mr. Deal said Altamonte Spr ings has embraced community policing like what is practiced by Port St. Lucie. W e do a lot of the same things, he said. B ecoming Port St. Lucie police chief would give him the opportunity to continue doing what Ive been doing, he said. He said he views the biggest challenge is maintaining a positive relationship between residents and the police department. He would work to keep a positive relationship through transparency, and seeking input from the community. Mr. Deal recalled that in Altamonte Springs he met with residents of a crimer idden area before instituting a no-tolerance crime police for that community. When the policy was instituted, people didnt complain about heavy-handed police actions. They knew it was coming, he said. He promised to be honest, fair, consistent and hard working if chose as chief. Mr. Novick said while differences in size may exist between Franklin Township and Port St. Lucie, residents of both areas want to live in a safe environment. To have a good relationship with the community, he said, the police department would be open and would embrace community policing under his administration. He said one of the programs he started in New Jersey involved senior citizens and getting their input. Mr. Novick said he wants the Port St. Lucie job in part because his current job involves being township manager. B ut my passion is law enforcement, he said. He said the police under his command in Franklin To wnship gained recognition. As for Port St. Police, he said, Theyre on the edge of greatness. They just need to get to that next level and Im the police chief to get them to the next level. Mr. Speziale said his exper ience as a sheriff before working with the port authority is more comparable to what he would be doing as police chief. He said he favors community policing. I think we have to go out and reach out to the community and make sure the public understands what we do, Mr. Speziale said. He said he favors housing the police department at one station instead of having a more decentralized operation with substations. He believes theres no r oom for police brutality and that everyone should be treated with dignity and r espect; however, if you break the law you need to go to jail. He r esponded to newspaper articles of the past, suggesting political considerations were involved when he left his job as a sheriff and started working for the port authority. The newspaper articles said some suggested with the departure of Mr. Sp eziale, a Democrat, from the sheriff post, it would be easier to elect a Republican. B ut Mr. Speziale said he interviewed with both D emocrats and Republicans to become chief at the port authority. In r esponse to a question indicating that some years of employment may be off in his application, he said he doesnt believe thats true. He also said hewould be happy in Port St. Lucie, though its much smaller than New York City and some other places in Florida, such as Miami, where he has applied for a job. Po rt S t. Lucie is a thriving city, he said. He said he misses, with his current position, the contact with the general public that he had in other law enforcement jobs. Mr. Speziale pledged to make Port St. Lucie safer and said that he always puts service over self. John Deal Craig Novick Gerald SpezialeP oliceF rom page A1

When I first arrived in Fort Pierce in 1978, Interstate95 ended in Fort Pierce. Along with my late ex-husband, we opened the first and only tattoo studio SkinArt Tattoo on U.S. 1 in Fort Pierce. H urricane David came through and the protection was using masking tape and plywood on the jalousie windows. S hopping back then was at the Piggly Wiggly and KMar t. Commerical rent was only $250 a month on U.S.1 back then. We we re featured in the M iami Herald in 1979. Later, we moved our shop to Jensen Beach where everything was quiet after 5 p .m. S ummertime was slow, hot and after the snowbirds left, it was business with the locals. There were hardly any cars on U.S. 1 from Fort Pierce to Stuart. Then we moved to open the first tattoo studio in Port S t. Lucie. There wasnt a St. Lucie W est and Prima Vista Bouleva rd ended at the Turnpike Br idge. O ur clients were from 18 to 70 years old. The shop name was changed to Skin-art tattoo boutique and was painted pink since the clientele had been changing. I also opened Custom Thangs in Port St. Lucie. This was a bike and hot rod shop on Village Green Drive. I appeared in many television, newspaper and magazine stories. When I was at Tattoo World people were starting to ask more for the permanent make-up. This was due to the news media with Dear Abby trashing it as she did tattooing. It made people more curious, so they wanted to know more about it. Doing a lot of consultations and educating the public and media through newspaper and magazine articles, I decided to break out on my o wn and open Always Perfect Permanent Make-Up on Pr ima Vista Boulevard in F riday, June 22, 2012 A4 Port St. LucieHometown News Leslie A. A word to bike riders The Martin County Metropolitan Planning Organization has a map for bicycle riders. Therein it states: sidewalks are built for pedestrians, not bicyclists. B icyclists argument is and I quote from bicyclists: I am not r iding on the road it is too dangerous. W ell, guess what, join the club. Thats exactly how I feel about you riding on the sidewalk. How did it ever happen that bicyclists have more rights on the sidewalks than pedestrians? They have the full right of the r oad plus they demand the rights of the sidewalks, too. Mar tin County and city of Stuart, it is time to pass some ordinances for the pedestrians, not the bicyclists. O ther towns and cities have that already, since they were confronted with the same growing pains. St Augustine is just one example. No bicyclists on sidewalks in city limits. O ther towns and cities made it very clear pedestrians have the right of way on sidewalks, 100 percent. Period. How many businesses and potential homeo wners have bypassed Sebastian because of this? Everybodys property value would be higher. And, by the way, if you hate Fo x so much, why do you watch it? Y ou also seem to have trouble with religion, calling Romney, a millionaire Mormon. My religion does not matter, just as no one elses should, when running for office. The voters will have to use their common sense and knowledge of the people running. By the way, using any of the many fact-check vehicles, you would see that your Speaker of the House, Mr. Reid, is also a Mor mon. Should that alone disqualify him, as well? By 2010, that number had almost doubled to 164,603, an increase of almost 85 percent. In 2005, the city was named one of the fastest-growing cities in America. In 2006, the community now known as Tradition began its roots, and was built by Core Communities. It was later chosen as the site of HGTVs green home 2009, and one of Americas best communities. The moniker Research C oast was bolstered when biotech firm Torrey Pines I nstitute for Molecular S tudies open its doors in 2008 and the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute was built in 2012. Also in Tradition, Digital Domain Media Group built its Florida office in 2011 and Tradition Hospital broke ground. Dur ing the boom, the city built the Crosstown Parkway, and in January 2012 announced the final piece that will extend the road to U.S. 1. R esidents also saw the construction of several parks, the Port St. Lucie B otanical Gardens and the Po rt S t. Lucie Civic Center. The sports world took note when PGA Village, now known as one of the ultimate golf destinations, was not ranked in the top 75 of best golf resorts by Golf D igest magazine, but as one of the top five resorts for golfing families. Also Digital Domain Park, where the New York Mets conduct their spring training has seen name changes and renovations over the last 10 years. In 2003, it was named Tradition Field, and $10 million in upgrades were completed. After the hurricanes of 2004, millions more were spent on repairs. In 2010, the training facility was r enamed Digital Domain Park. Growth brought families, and six schools that took children from kindergarten through eighth grade, as w ell as one high school, we re built in Port St. Lucie. Charter schools such as NAU Charter, Palm Pointe E ducational Research, R enaissance Charter and the College Preparatory A cademy of the Treasure C oast made appearances, and higher education continued with the construction of the Indian River S tate College STEM building, which encompasses the science, technology, engineering and math disciplines. Enrollment at the state college has increaded 52 percent since 2002, and the 56,000 square-foot, three-story building is scheduled to be completed in spring of 2013. 1993. I introduced the medical field to the many benefits permanent make-up had to offer. Working in my studio on my own, I applied eyebrows, eyeliner, full lips, including but not limited to applying areola and color r econstruction. Now my clients were coming up in age, from 70 to 94 for permanent eyebrows due to eyesight problems, shaking hands and medical issues. I opened another tattoo studio Artistic Designs and later with my son Beyond R eality Tattoo. Po rt S t. Lucie business was booming and people we re moving here and building and buying homes. I guess Ive been busy in this area over the years. Ive been through the good times and the slow times. idea of the wild ride ahead of me, I might have answered that phone call differently. B ut on blind faith, I said ye s, and here we are today. In this capitalistic, entrepreneurial-driven economy, in which most businesses dont make it to five ye ars, we are celebrating our 10-year anniversary. In the very competitive media business, I dont think any of the local news outlets, some with 100 y ears on us, bet on H ometown News surviving a year, let alone 10. The journalist in me would prefer to think of the newspaper as providing a noble and necessary service, so important in this democratic society that the press is often r eferred to as The Fourth Estate, the unofficial branch on par with the executive, legislative and judicial branches of U.S. government. B ut newspapers are also a business. We have the r ight to a free press in this country, but somebody has to pay for it. As a news organization, we worry about getting headlines right and writing fair and accurate stories. B ut as a business, we also worry about the fluctuating cost of goods (newsprint, gas for our delivery trucks) and availability of services (how do we publish without electricity after a hurricane?) Over the last decade, I have gained a new appreciation for the small business o wner, his struggles and challenges, as well as triumphs and successes. Thats why we invited local businesses that have also made it in the last 10 years to celebrate with us, and share their stories with you in this edition. Also in this edition, weve invited officials in the markets we serve along F loridas East Coast to r ecap whats changed and shaped their communities in these 10 years in local history. I cant tell the H ometown News story as well as the papers founding publisher, S teve Erlanger, who wrote the company history some y ears ago. The account below, part history, part proud pronouncement, and part declaration of the brightness of the future, is the story of our newspaper company. I hope you find it as inspiring a piece as I do every time I read it: I n September of 2001, longtime Fort Pierce r esident and local businessman Vernon Smith contacted publisher Steve Erlanger about starting a newspaper company. Ver non was not happy with the print media situation on the Treasure C oast. He thought one of the countrys fastestgrowing markets should have more than one voice and more than one option when it came to providing news and offering advertising opportunities. O n June 14, 2002, H ometown News debuted with what has come to be known as the largest launch of a newspaper company in the history of the industry: three separate editions, including Port St. L ucie, Fort Pierce and Mar tin County with 65,000 circulation and 22 full-time employees, who were all about to embark on an amazing journey. I n the next four years, H ometown News was publishing in 19 different markets with a little more than 500,000 in circulation. H ometown News could now lay claim to having the fastest growth of a newspaper companyin the history of newspapers. I n our very first year, H ometown News was selected by two leading national community newspaper associations as one of the top three community newspapers in the country. We were also honored as being the top award-winning community newspaper group in the country. W e were voted the No. 1 community newspaper in America in our second y ear, and have been in the top three nearly every year since then. We were also honored as the only community newspaper in history to be voted No. 1 by both national newspaper associations in the same y ear. S tatewide, we have been honored as being the top award-winning community newspaper group by the C ommunity Papers of F lorida seven of the 10 y ears we have been in existence. Over the past few years, H ometown News has adapted to the changing economy. We have tightened up, gotten smarter about how we do business, combined some editions and focused our efforts in the counties that matched our model. We converted from saturation delivery to a subscription home delivery model. With more than 150,000 subscribers out of our circulation of 267,000, H ometown News is one of the largest subscription papers in the nation. W ith the changes we have made over the years, H ometown News is primed to move into the future as a lean, mean, newspaper. The strength of community newspapers has increased, while the competition is waning. Good, quality local community news will always be important to the r esidents of our cities and towns, and Hometown N ews will be here to provide that valuable information. O ur success can be attributed to one main factor: our people. The team at H ometown News is indeed what makes the difference between us and the other advertising and local news sources in the communities we serve. As long as we continue to hire and bring the very best, most-skilled and committed individuals to our team, then our growth and success will continue.GrowthF rom page A1StudioF rom page A4 HTNF rom page A1 See R ANTS, A10

After the second time, he (the suspect) quickly walked out of the aisle, down the main aisle of the store, out the front doors and entered the van. He quickly sped away without purchasing anything, the r eport said. The second incident occurred on June 13 at Publix 121 S.W. Port St. Lucie Blv d., the report said. A 6-year-old was shopping along with her mother and four siblings when a male asked, if she still wore a diaper and lifted his shirt to show her he wears one as w ell, an arrest affidavit said. The male followed the family through out the store and one point, grabbed her buttocks. Theres been a change in federal regulations regarding noise abatement, which r equires us to carry out a study, said Gregory Oravec, city manager. The study will cover the building suggestions for all six original locations of where the extension could cross the St. Lucie River and connect with U.S. 1, and will take approximately five w eeks to complete. The finished extension will be an estimated 2-miles long and will help relieve traffic congestion on Prima V ista and Port St. Lucie boulevards. While the first survey was an additional survey r equired by the state, the second survey, the cultural r esource assessment survey, was actually on the schedule to be conducted at a later date. A cultural resource assessment survey is the only type of survey which satisfies the historic preservation r equirements of federal and state regulations. It looks at both archaeological sites, such as ponds and creeks, as w ell as historic resources, such as older buildings. So far, a preliminary pond-site assessment has already been conducted. B ut since final pond-site locations had not yet been determined, the additional survey was scheduled for a later date. While we were hoping to conduct the cultural r esources survey once we had gotten to the actual design portion of the project, the reviewing entities have requested we do it now, Mr. Oravec said. This survey will take approximately three weeks to complete. The two changes increases the project cost to approximately $4.1 million. Crosstown Parkway itself, from Interstate-95 to Manth Lane was completed in sections over a number of y ears, finishing in 2009. The Crosstown Parkway extension project dates back to 1980, when a third eastw est corridor and river crossing was adopted into the citys comprehensive plan. In 1993, the city sold its land along the north fork of the St. Lucie River to the state of Florida Department of Natural Resources, with an understanding that a ri ver crossing would be pursued at a later date. In 2008, the project moved forward to an envir onmental impact statement, which was approved the summer of 2011. The extension over the St. L ucie River is estimated to cost approximately $161 million, and take six years to be completed. ting to tapping her with the umbrella. O ddly enough, they found some keys that did not belong to them. Later, Vero Beach police discovered that one of those keys opened the door of a residence of the suspect in the burglary. Earlier that evening, police had come into a contact with a man wearing gray sweat pants and having in his hand a pair of pink lace underwear. When he took the man home, he saw the man dispose of the underwear in a garbage closet. After the burglary in which it was reported that underwear may have been stolen, the police officer r ecalled the man with the underwear and returned to the residence. It was then that he tried the key, which worked. And he retrieved the underwear, which the burglary victim identified as being her property. She also said the gray sweat pants belonged to her. The man who had been disposing of the underw ear was then charged with burglary. He might as well as have left a photo of himself with a confession at the scene.Anti-smoking ca mpaign reaches new levelThese days, smokers find that just about everywhere they light up, someone expresses disapproval. And there are increasingly fewer places where they can legally smoke. In Mar tin County, the campaign to snuff out smoking reached a new level recently when one man confronted another man about smoking while pumping gasoline. When the man refused to put out his cigarette, the other man returned to his vehicle and got a gun. That worked. M ost would agree smoking while pumping gasoline is not smart, but threatening to shoot someone over it may be even less smart. The man who threatened the smoker was the one who ended up being arrested. He was charged with aggravated assault.AccusedF rom page A1NoiseF rom page A1BlotterF rom page A1

Over the past 60 years, the r eal estate market has changed dramatically. When the company was founded, there was no multiple list service in the area. R ealtors held their listings in secret to keep competing real estate brokers from to selling them. It was not unusual for a seller to list with multiple brokers resulting in a halfdozen for sale signs in each yard. Ed Schlitt realized this was an inefficient system. He worked with other local real estate brokers to establish the Indian River County multiple listing service. In the early 1970s, Ed Schlitt helped to organize the building of the first two condominiums in Indian River C ounty. He was instrumental in procuring developers to build The Ocean Chateau condominium and invested in the project, as well as being the primary selling broker for the condominiums in the Royal Riviera in the Vero Beach. As the business continued to grow, the selling of real estate became more highly technical. Buyers from outside of the area were learning about this piece of paradise along the Treasure and Space C oasts. F or people to feel more comfortable investing in real estate, Ed Schlitt believed he needed to partner with a brand known for its integrity and real estate savvy. He joined Coldwell Banker in 1983 and the Ed Schlitt Agency became known as C oldwell Banker Ed Schlitt. When Sears Corporation bought Coldwell Banker and Allstate Insurance, it was necessary to split the real estate and insurance divisions of the company. Ed Schlitt continued the real estate brokerage business, and Bob and Louis Schlitt took over the insurance company. Through the decades, markets rose and fell in continuous business cycles. R ampant inflation followed by the gas embargos in the 1970s led to a crash in the r eal estate market in 1973 and 1974, which left buildings uninhabited and deteriorating. But by the late 70s, home and condominium sales were booming again. The old condos were refurbished and new condos built. In the 1980s, high interest r ates drove down market prices and caused many savings and loans to collapse. Once again, the market quickly recovered in the late 80s. The current real estate r ecession, which started in 2006, is only one of a series that have come and gone. The real estate market is curr ently recovering, and will once again become robust as it has in past cycles. Linda Schlitt Gonzalez and S teven Schlitt continue in the tradition of their parents, Ed and Marguerite Schlitt, by continuously expanding the business and striving to be the most innovative brokerage along the Indian River, from Martin County through Brev ard. A dding the Hoyt C. Murphy brokerage to our family of Realtors will enhance our capabilities to orchestrate a one-stop solution catering to every detail of our customers real estate needs, Linda Schlitt said. There is no similar service to be found anywhere along the Treasure and S pace Coasts. W e are enthusiastic about building on both companies long-lasting traditions while focusing on our common goals of excellent professional service to our customers, said Steve Schiltt. first day in office. S heriff Mascara gave a lot of credit for his re-election to his employees. The employees of the sheriffs office do an awesome job day in and day out, he said. He and his employees put service to the community above all else, he said. Another factor in him r unning unopposed, he said, is the economy. W ith the economic slowdown, its very difficult to r aise money for a campaign, he said. Ev en incumbents such as himself, have difficultly r aising money, he said. As a result of not having opposition, the sheriff said, he will return 100 percent of donations to donors. Ms. Litty said she is also happy to be re-elected during her 20th year in office as public defender. I m happy and thrilled to be able to continue doing this job, she said. I continue to love what I do and I love every day I go to the office. Ms. Litty said during her 20 years in office she has only been opposed in one election since initially being elected. One thing notable about the current situation, she said, is that We have one of the finest offices weve ever had during the 20 years. It seems like the moon and stars have aligned and we have one of the best offices we v e had in 20 years. And the office is able to carry out its job despite continuing challenges with budget cuts, she said. Y ou see, I watch other channels, NBC, CBS, ABC, Fo x, CNN, but not MSNBC anymore. I dont need to listen to so much hatred instead of news. Why now?Im just wondering why Gov. Scott did not raise the question about non-citizens and ineligible voters when he was running for governor. Also, why wasnt that done when George W. Bush was r unning for president? Why now? Is there anybody out there who has the answer or do we already know the answer?W eird in L.A.N ot all weird ideas originate in California, but many of them do. Los Angeles, the largest city in the nation, has decided to ban plastic bags at supermarket checkout lines. No mention, sadly, of how many plastics industry jobs will be lost. We keep hearing about the need to create more jobs, but Ca lifornia politicians must be deaf. Los Angeles City Co uncil is now demanding that the ban be widened to extend state wide. We anticipate busy-body environmentalists will soon be lobb ying for the same ban here. ST. LUCIE COUNTY A Po rt S t. Lucie woman who was previously caught trying to hide drugs in her bra while being booked into the jail tried to do the same thing last week, authorities said. B ut what she didnt know when she put morphine pills into a plastic finger from a glove and inserted it inside her body was that the jail had recently installed a body scanner, authorities said. When Patti Lepannen w ent through the scanner, an image showed the contraband, authorities said. Ms. Lepannen, 53, 5300 D eer Run Drive, Port St. L ucie, who was arrested after having her bond re voked on the previous charge, was charged again with introduction of contraband into a jail. Ma j. P atrick Tighe, who is in charge of the jail, said the drugs would likely not have been detected were it not for the scanner. W ith the epidemic of illegal use of narcotics, theres no doubt that prior to the installation of the scanner earlier this month, some inmates brought in drugs undetected, St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara said. The sheriffs office used $190,000 in federal funds it r eceived for housing illegal immigrants to buy the scanner, Sheriff Mascara said. W ith that purchase, St. L ucie County becomes only the fifth county in Florida to have one, Sheriff Mascara said. Lee, Pinellas, Palm B each and Pasco are the other counties that have scanners.. S heriff Mascara said people try to bring drugs into the jail because theyre afraid of withdrawal symptoms, he said. B ut the last thing the jail needs is for prisoners to be taking drugs not prescribed for them, he added. They attempt to smuggle drugs into the jail any way they can, he said. The scanner not only will be used to detect drugs, but also, weapons. P at Walsh, a captain at the jail, said one man tried to bring a knife into the jail. Its going to have an impact on safety, she said of the scanner. The sheriffs office said in a press release that the scan takes eight seconds and r esults in little radiation exposure. It would take 400 chest xr ays to equal the radiation from one scan, the sheriffs office said. Ad ditionally, the scan doesnt require anyone to r emove clothes and does not produce soft tissue images, the sheriffs office said. LUCIE COUNTY Ev en as the areas activities slow down for the summer, the nonprofit artistic center, Art Mundo, is keeping residents busy with a variety of shows and activities. M ost recently, the center held five exhibits at the same time, spread throughout the buildings third floor loft and basement galleries. On June 13, gallerygoers were treated to a special display of firefighter boots that were decor ated by local artists to be used to raise funds for Lil F eet, a program set up by the firefighters to purchase school shoes for children in St. Lucie County. C atherine Chaney with the St. Lucie County Fire D istrict called and asked if any artists wanted to decorate the boots, said H olly Theuns, director of Art Mundo. None of us worked had ever worked on rubber as a medium before, but the artists were all receptive to the idea. Ms. Theuns said Ms. Chaney first brought in about eight boots, but because of the enthusiastic response, left and came back with more. There are now 13 boots, decorated with everything from buttons to sunflowers. They were a lot of fun, said one of the artists, Georgia Love. Ms. Love specializes in trompe loeil, which is French for deceive the eye. The painting technique creates the optical illusion of three-dimensions for paintings. Her boot depicted an oil-based painting of kittens hiding inside peeking out. I wanted to do something either on the boot, or coming out of the boot, she said. I would love to do this every year. A ccording to Ms. Theuns, Lil Feet began a few y ears ago when firefighters responded to a false alarm at a day care center. One of the firemen, Fred B arbera, noticed one of the children had holes in his shoes. He went to the store and purchased new shoes for the child the same day. Fr om that year on, the fire department has been r aising money to buy shoes for local children, she said. R epresentatives from S eacoast National Bank we re on hand to look over the boots. W e re very excited to be a part of this, said Terri S loan-Bartz, senior vice president for the bank. This is our first year working with Art Mundo, but we have been raising money for Lil Feet for about three years. The boots will be used to collect funds at Seacoast National Banks in the county throughout J uly. Afterward, the boots will be auctioned off to r aise more money for the nonprofit. In addition to the boots, the center is displaying wood designs by Judith S uit and Larry Burchard, and artists Katie Henderson and Doug Macon on the third floor. Also on display through Ju ly 5 is the art show T ideline, which features man-made objects that have washed up on local beaches and been transformed into works of art. A portion of the proceeds from the show will go to the Surfrider Foundation. Ar t Mundo is located at 111 Orange Avenue in Fort Pierce. For more information, call (772) 766-0021 or go online to www.artmundo.org.See OUT, B3 Artist Lori McNamara, Gabe Guilde and Fred Barbera, firefighter engineer, get ready for a collaboration between 13 Art Mundo artists who volunteered to transform retired St Lucie County Fire District boots into works of art. Chicken is the dinner of the week. W e're going to make two Latin-American dinners. Chicken is the most versatile of meats. It's lowfat (sans skin), and inexpensive. When buying a whole chicken, remove the bag inside the body. You did know there is a bag of giblets, (neck, etc.) in the chicken? Please don't feel insulted. I knew someone who thought the chicken came already stuffed. I t's not a sale when there's more fat than meat. Rinse the chicken and r emove any fat you can. S oak in cold salted water for about 1 hour; this is called "bleeding the chicken," it makes the meat taste fresher. Enjoy. See you next week. I searched through my cookbooks and couldn't find a recipe for Spanishstyle chicken and rice. I r emembered a rice recipe my Mexican friend Lucy made, and I used what she taught me to make my dish. L ucy has since gone to be with the Lord, but she lives on in my memory. She used a seasoning called sazon goya con azafran. You will find it in the Latin-American section of the supermarket. It's a seasoning that comes in a box. The box contains several packets. R emember, the recipe is an original. If any of my Latin-American readers have a recipe to share, I would be delighted. I added gandules for extra texture and protein. Make it as hot or mild as you choose. Chicken parts, allow at least 2 pieces per person 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil, canola oil or cooking spray 1 large onion, wedged and sliced 4 large cloves garlic, chopped 4 large bell peppers, half r ed, half green or any combination One 15-1/2 ounce can whole tomatoes 2 cups chicken broth, homemade or canned 2 packets sazon seasoning 1 teaspoon oregano 7 or 8 sprigs fresh Italian parsley (chopped) or 2 tablespoons dried S alt and pepper to taste F ew shakes crushed r ed pepper One 16-ounce can gandules (found in LatinAmerican section) 1 cup raw white rice R emove skin and fat from chicken. Do not use wings for this dish. Save them for another time. Soak chicken as explained. Cut and seed peppers, slice and set aside. In a large skillet that has a tight-fitting cover, saut chicken lightly in oil or cooking spray. R emove chicken and set aside. Add onions and garlic to skillet and saut til golden. Smash tomatoes and add with juice, seasonings and broth. Cook about 10 minutes. Return chicken to skillet, cover and cook about 20 minutes. Add rice, gandules and peppers. Co ver and cook until rice is tender and peppers are tender-crisp. Add more broth or water if necessary. NOTE: If you prefer to use brown rice cook it half-way before adding to the skillet. Stuff and roll or fold each fillet. Place seam side down in casserole. Co ver and bake in a 350degree oven for about 45 minutes. Top with crushed chips. Serve with rice. Hi everybody! First and foremost, I would like to wish H ometown News a very happy 10-year anniversary! It seems like just y esterday that the first edition ran off the presses to the delight of Martin and St. Lucie County r esidents. I am proud to have been a part of this for the past 10 years. M ost of the readers know me as the writer of the Garden Nook, but prior to that I did a w eather column known as Jo e s DiscoWeather C entral Time Capsule (say that three times fast). This was a column that took y ou, the reader, back in time with local weather events that happened many years ago. Some of the events went as far back as the 1800s. Let me rewind just a bit. As a kid, I always had an intense interest in the w eather. I was never satisfied to watch the w eather report and see what it was going to do. I wanted to know why it was going to rain or snow. I started to read and study about weather systems, fronts and above all hurricanes. To make the story a little shorter, actually a lot shorter, all this led me to the creation of Joes Disco W eather Central (now hometownweather.net) in 1999. Although the website was a great outlet, I still wanted to share my interest even further. My opportunity came when Car ol, my wife, was just starting with H ometown News and she suggested that I do their weather. I thought about it and eventually decided to take the challenge. Carol then set up an appointment with Tammy Raits, managing editor of H ometown News When we had our first meeting, we tossed around different ideas and came up with the idea of talking about past weather events along with current forecasts. The main idea was to have the weather done from a local standpoint. I must add that Tammy was my inspiration. It was her inspiration that made the column a success. In 2005, we decided to shift gears and that led me to a new challenge to proudly write the garden column, now called The Garden N ook, for the paper. S ince I had 27 years of horticulture experience under my belt, it was an exciting transition. Ten y ears later I am still writing the Garden Nook and I also own a remote computer repair company. My interest in the weather and horticulture is just as strong as ever, if not stronger. H ometown News is one of the greatest local papers in America and my wish is for their continued grand success! H appy anniversary H ometown News!
