ST. LUCIE COUNTY F or many, the opportunity to save a life may not present itself during their entire lifetime. B ut, Port St. Lucie Police Officer John Fazio was instrumental in saving the lives of three children in 2011. It makes me happy I am truly able to help someone during my life, Officer Fazio said. Officer Fazio was recognized as the top law enforcement Officer of the Y ear for the Port St. Lucie P olice Department during the annual meeting of The H undred Club of St. Lucie C ounty. The Hundred Club, formed in 1987, has the pur-Club honors top officers of year 021132Si g n-up for Your FREE Subscription & Delivery TodayMEMORIAL DAY NEWS,SAVINGS,HAPPENINGS & MORE!Call:866-913-6397 Online:signup.HometownNewsOL.com Email:signup@HometownNewsOL.com*Ifyou previously signed up,dont worry you will continue to receive your paper as scheduled. Some criminal cases are unusual, humorous or just outright odd.And theres no shortage of them on the Tr easure Coast. This column will highlight cases that often leave observers shaking their heads.Intent to sellA Port St. Lucie man arrested in Fort Pierce apparently thought he was going to get off with being charged with a misdemeanor when an officer found marijuana in his vehicle. A pparently, he also flunked the school of common sense. He told the officer he couldnt be charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell, a felony, because he didnt package it in separate bags. Whether that argument would have flown is doubtful, but the officer discovered more than just a bag of marijuana. He also found a day planner listing amounts of marijuana the man had and the price for which it would be sold. That sounds like much better evidence than how the marijuana is bagged. And as to how the man became a suspect in the first place when he went to meet with his probation officer, she suspected he was under the influence of a controlled substance. P olice were contacted and an officer searched his car.A loving touch PORT ST. Realtors use day off to help at area senior center PORT ST. LUCIE Most people use a day off from work to take care of themselves and their families. B ut on May 10, 41 employees from Keller W illiams Realty took their day off to lend a helping hand to the Council on Aging in Port St. Lucie. O ne of our Realtors, Sh irley Albert, delivers food to seniors with the Meals on Wheels program, said T ammy Eiseman, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. S he recommended helping the Council on Aging. The day was part of RED Da y, an annual community-service event. RED is an acronym for r enew, energize and donate. This is the realty companys fourth year participating. This displays the extraordinary effect a company can have when individuals come together to work as a team for the greater good, said Gail Hov ey, team leader. B ut their happiness here was soon tarnished when the family dog, a 12-year-old B eagle known as Tweeter, escaped from their backyard. The family posted fliers, drove through neighborhoods looking for their pet and checked continually with animal control and the humane society. But after a period of time, they accepted that their beloved pet was lost forever. A few months ago, the family made the decision to adopt another dog, and sisters Vanessa and Amanda visited the humane society to look at puppies. U nknown to them at the time, a beagle had come to the humane society a few w eeks earlier as a stray and put up for adoption. It was Tweeter. As the sisters walked through the adoption center, the normally quiet dog began barking and howling. When the duo approached the dogs kennel, they quickly realized they had been r eunited with their missing pet. I t was amazing seeing the Sisters Vanessa and Amanda Migliore, along with daughter Aubrey, pose of a picture with their dog, Tweeter. Tweeter had been lost for more than a year when the sisters found him at the St. Lucie Humane Society.Photo courtesy of Shawn Hart By Jay Meiseljmeisel@hometownnewsol.com See F ALLEN, A4By Jay Meiseljmeisel@hometownnewsol.com See CLUB, A10By Dawn Krebsdkrebs@hometownnewsol.com See CENTER, A2By Dawn Krebsdkrebs@hometownnewsol.com See FOUND, A9 County uses different techniques to control mosquitoes ST. Ear infections usually are caused by allergic disease. The ear is an extension of the skin and oftentimes, the dog will have concurrent scabs on the skin and be quite itchy everywhere. The ear becomes inflamed because of the irritation.Wax develops which traps moisture. The ear is a dark and moist place especially in floppy eared dogs like spaniels which promotes bacterial and yeast growth. This causes more inflammation and pus to accumulate in the ear which is the source of the foul odor that develops.Another common cause of ear infection is swimmers ear.Dogs that enjoy swimming like Retrievers tend to be predisposed to ear infections. Diagnosis is made with clinical signs, physical exam, cytology of the ear, and sometimes bacterial culture and sensitivity of the ear.The physical exam is important to rule out parasitic causes like ear mites (rare in the dog), foreign bodies, and tumors (ceruminous gland tumors).Ceruminous glands produce the wax in the ear and tumors (benign and malignant), can cause an increase of the production of wax which can predispose a dog to an ear infection. It is also important to ensure that the tympanic membrane (ear drum) is intact. T reatment is aimed at identifying the underlying cause and treating the infection.Allergic skin disease is a systemic problem so identifying the allergen and treating the resulting irritation is important in the overall success of the treatment. The drugs we use to treat ear infections generally contain an antibiotic to treat the bacteria, antifungals to treat the yeast component, and steroids to reduce the inflammation. If tumors are identified, they m ust be removed, and sent to a pathologist.Treatment must be continued until complete resolution of signs and this time period can vary from patient to patient.Discontinuing treatment before resolution can lead to resistant bacteria. We are beginning to see more and more of this including MRSA.If an ear hematoma develops, it must be drained and a canula inserted. We advise clients to check their dogs ear and clean them once a week, especially if they are prone to infections. The first sign of a problem is an increase in the production of wax.If they are checking it weekly, they can address it before it becomes infected. Lucie County Sheriff Ken M ascara said. That led our nation, he said, adding that 163 officers nationwide died in the line of duty that year. This year three law enforcement officers have died in Florida, the most in any state in 2012. R ight now were on a path to exceed last years line-of-duty deaths, he said. C ounty Commissioner T od Mowery presented a proclamation declaring this past week as Law Enforcement Memorial Week in St. L ucie County. After the ceremony, Dave R oberts, the father of Master D eputy Roberts, recalled he was going to meet his son for lunch that day, but wasn t able to do so. On Feb. 11, 1999, Master D eputy Roberts, then a 14y ear veteran with the St. L ucie County Sheriffs D epartment, was on his way to an accident on North 25th Street in Fort Pierce when another vehicle struck his motorcycle, Sheriff Mascara said. He died a month later from his injuries, the sheriff said. Mrs. Roberts said her son was born in Ohio and attended schools in St. Lucie C ounty. He r eturned to Ohio for a while and after coming back to St. Lucie County, applied for jobs at the sheriffs office and the nuclear power plant, she said. They talked about the choice, and she suggested that at least at the sheriffs office he would get to work inside, because at the time all deputies had to work at the jail during their first two y ears, she said. S he also noted he loved motorcycles, as did the entire family. O thers who died in the line of duty in St. Lucie C ounty, according to the sheriff and his offices website were: Dan Carlton, who became the second sheriff in St. Lucie County in 1907, died on May 22, 1915, from injuries he received in a shootout in downtown Fort Pierce, William Robert Monroe, the fourth sheriff of St. Lucie C ounty, died on March 25, 1921, when a boat he was operating exploded on the In dian River. The accidental explosion occurred not long after deputies seized 200 cases of illegal liquor. Sgt. Harold F. Holberger died on Aug. 28, 1985. He had retired from the sheriffs office in 1981, but later took a part-time position as a school crossing guard. While directing traffic on Angle Road at the entrance to Fort Pierce Westwood H igh School, a vehicle struck and killed him. K-9 Vasko died on June 25, 2004, after being shot while he and a deputy apprehended a kidnapping and carjacking suspect. Master Deputy Joseph P. Hov er died on Oct. 25, 2005, after being injured during defensive tactics training. He suffered complications during surgery.F allenF rom page A1 Staff photo by Jay MeiselDave Roberts and Don Stiller, chaplain for the St. Lucie County Sheriffs Office, prepare during Law Enforcement Memorial Week to lay a wreath in honor of law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty in St. Lucie County and elsewhere. Biker costumesThe noise Harley Davison riders make is just part of the Look at me, look at me syndrome. They are grown adults in full costume. I have ridden bikes all my life and have not had loud, muffler-less bikes ever. Try taking off the muffler on your car and see how long before you get a ticket. Why cant cars use the same safety excuse? Ba ck in the 1970s in Georgia, my roommate had a Harley without mufflers and he regularly got stopped and ticketed. So why do they get a free ride to pollute our hearing? Law enforcement needs to enforce the law. Period.W ait to judgeIn r eading the comments made for in regards to Mr. Z immerman in the shooting of Mr. Martin, we all must take a step back and allow the evidence to be presented on what really happened that night, and then all the facts should be presented to the citizens of Florida so they can make their own determination on the case as the evidence shows. This issue has been racist since the very beginning by the media making this out to be an action based on color. If the evidence can show, without a doubt, that Mr. Zimmerman shot Mr. Martin without just cause for the use of deadly force, then he should be punished for his actions that night. As well as if the evidence can show without a doubt that Mr. Martins actions lead to his death, then Mr. Zimmerman should be set free. What we all must realize in this case is that this should never have been about color, but the actions and results of two individuals. As for the people making threats, our laws clearly state this is unlawful and that you can be prosecuted for making such threats. On a personal note, I will say that I am a law-abiding citizen who has carried a concealed weapons license issued by the state of Florida, and if I felt my life were threatened I would use deadly force as a last resort, and that color nor age would have any factor on its use. I carry a copy of Floridas castle doctorate, and what constitutes the use of such force. This doctorate is something that every person who is wishing/wanting to own a firearm should read. I will close by saying that I will wait and see what the evidence shows before I come to any conclusion on this case. Bitter election yearWhile it is far too early to predict what will happen in November, signs point to a close and bitter election. The economic recovery, projected by many, seems weak and slow in coming. If Pr esident Obama is unable to run on his record, he may be in deep trouble. R omney, on the other hand, is already criticizing the president for skyrocketing national debt and what he calls the presidents unwillingness to reign in government spending. Are we better off now than we were before?Praise for the presidentPr esident Barack Obama deserves a lot of credit. Consider these facts: by the time he took office, the country had been losing more than 700,000 jobs a month. Three economy driving industries, auto, financial and housing, were in a major crisis. The U.S. involvement in two very expensive wars and the low revenue intake contributed to tax cuts for the wealthiest American taxpayers was bringing the national economy to the brink of collapsing. T oday, new jobs are being created however modest the presidents critics are willing to recognize. The auto and financial industries are fully recovered, profitable and paying taxes thanks to the implementation of his high-risk r ecovery plan a.k.a. bailout. The housing market is improving, too. One war is over and the other one is scheduled to end next year. The U.S. economy is recovering. Add to this, health care insurance reform to provide health insurance for more than 40 million underprivileged Americans. He managed to accomplish all this despite the relentless opposition of the Republican representatives and the lack of support of representatives of his own party. I magine his accomplishments if the Republicans had not sacrificed the country to follow the lets make him a one-term president agenda. Any fair-minded Republican, Democrat or independent person will acknowledge the presidents accomplishments in the past three years are outstanding. After all, it took eight years to take the country to the financial condition where he found it.What about nuclear energy?I magine what our lives would be like without a reliable supply of electricity. It powers our homes, offices and industries. It enables communications, entertainment, medical services and various forms of transportation. N uclear energy is a reliable and affordable source of constant electricity, which emits no greenhouse gasses. N uclear already provides one-fifth of our electricity. New r eactors could power future generations. Pro viding more low-carbon, affordable electricity cannot be achieved without nuclear energy playing a significant role in Americas balanced energy portfolio.Hypocrisy in D.C.?P oliticians in Washington do not have a monopoly on hypocrisy but examples of do as I say not as I do are legend there. Pr esident Kennedys children graduated from the prestigious and expensive Sidwell Friends School. Bill Clintons daughter went there. And Al Gores son. And Joe Bidens grandchildren. And, of course, President Obamas daughters. All of the above think its OK for District of Columbia r esidents to send their children to the capitols failing public schools, but they are not good enough for their children. S uch hypocrisy. University remains committed to serving the Treasure CoastTo the editor: F lorida Atlantic University has proposed several options that are being considered to meet a $24 million cut to the universitys state funding for 2012-13. I want to offer assurance that FAU is committed to continuing its longtime relationship with the communities of the Treasure C oast as a partner in higher education, research innovation and civic engagement. All FAU degree programs will continue to be offered to Tr easure Coast students; however, the universitys administrative services at the Port St. Lucie campus, which is jointly operated by FAU and Indian River State College, will be suspended. The 247 FAU students who were enrolled on this campus last semester will still be able to access the full FAU curriculum by attending classes at FAUs Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in Fort Pierce, at the Jupiter and Boca R aton campuses, and via e-learning courses. They will have the assistance of dedicated and knowledgeable advisors, who will keep them on track toward graduation. The university has recently invested more than $44 million in improvements to the education and research facilities at FAU Harbor Branch, which ranks as one of the worlds foremost centers of marine-related studies. The planned expansion of academic programs there will produce great opportunities for students, while enhancing r esearch and community outreach activities. We will continue to work with our partners at Indian River State C ollege to serve the undergraduate educational needs of the Treasure Coast as research and educational initiatives increase at FAU Harbor Branch. F lorida Atlantic Universitys commitment to serving the Tr easure Coast dates back to the 1970s, and we take great pride in the fact that thousands of Treasure Coast students have been able to pursue their higher education goals at FA U. That commitment has not wavered. The universitys mission on the Treasure Coast remains the same: to offer educational opportunity to students, to pursue research that will bring economic benefits to the r egion and to provide meaningful community service. the erosion district. While it is a county department, it is also overseen by the Florida Bureau of Entymology and Pest C ontrol. P utting out chemicals is a highly regulated area, Mr. D avid said. We have strict permit obligations. The department covers four aspects of mosquito control in St. Lucie County: source reduction, larviciding, adultciding and biological methods. The one residents are probably most familiar with is the adultciding, as eight fog trucks make their way around the countys residential areas, applying a low-volume insecticide. W e have a 100 percent r esponse, he said. When we get a call about mosquitoes, we either go out and do an inspection and do a treatment, or set up a fogging operation for that area. We can cover the entire county in one week. B ut the county also monitors and treats the many parks, waterways and nature trails, using a large data collection that incorporates daily mosquito counts from 24 sites. There are also weekly and biweekly collection data sites. F or more isolated areas, different approaches are used to monitor mosquito growth. F or example, source r eduction is the countys way of controlling breeding sites where mosquitoes develop. The county floods the wetland areas along the coast with salt water, to prevent mosquito breeding. This also has the ecological benefit of creating healthy environments for mangroves, and creates a fish nursery, Mr. David said. Dur ing the fall, the wind tides in the lagoon keep the marshes flooded naturally. Another step the county took was to work with agricultural farmers in the 1990s to switch from flood irrigation to using microjets for crops. The result stopped mosquitoes from becoming F riday, May 18, 2012 A8 Port St. LucieHometown News 022654 022657 021910 7218 South US1 Port St. Lucie(at Rio Mar & US 1 light north of Prima Vista) 772-343-7080022651 Carol Sells for You!COMMISSION BASED(Well pack &ship for you!)No House Calls No Exceptions A A l l m m o o s s t t A A n n y y t t h h i i n n g g !Sales FREE Appraisals Family Owned & Operated Collectibles Coins Jewelry Sports Memorabilia Lionel Trains Pocket WatchesOPEN: Mon-Fri 8:30am-5pm Sat 9am-2pm by appt only 021134 www.patrickexterminating.com 3226 SEGran Parkway Stuart License #4864MARTIN 772-286-6812 022518ST. M embers pay $100 for an annual membership. The recognition for Officer Fazio came during the annual banquet of The Hundred Club on May 8. H e has all the outstanding qualities any law enforcement executive would want in an officer, Po rt S t. Lucie Police Chief Br ian Reuther said. Officer Fazio said two of the incidents where he helped save lives in 2011 involved children who nearly drowned in a pool. In both cases, he said, r esuscitation efforts began before he arrived. Officer Fazio said he continued CPR until an ambulance arrived and he carried both of the children to the ambulance. In the third case, he helped the son of a St. Lucie C ounty deputy, when he discovered the boy was choking on food, Officer Fazio said. All three children are doing well now, he said. D etective Angela Flowers, who has worked the last six y ears as an economic crimes investigator, was recognized as law enforcement Officer of the Year for the St. Lucie C ounty Sheriffs Office. S t. Lucie County Sheriff K en Mascara said she works many cases each year that involve in some cases hundreds or thousands of victims. S he is definitely a master of case prioritization, Sheriff Mascara said. One of her most notable cases involved two men r unning bogus charities for children, he said. The men collected donations from 3,000 or more people, he said. C an you imagine having to find each one of those victims?, he asked. Another notable investigation involved marijuana grow houses, he said. D etective Flowers did all the research and collected information so those houses could be seized because of the illegal activities. I love wh1at I do, Detective Flowers said. I see the impact (of the crime), especially on someone who is elderly who has been defrauded. Donald Stefani was named Firefighter of the Y ear for the St. Lucie County Fi re D istrict. Fi re Chief Ron Parrish called Mr. Stefani one of our shining stars. He said that not only is Mr. Stefani a fine firefighter, but also someone who enjoys helping others. Hes been involved in efforts to deliver more than 1,000 meals to needy families during the holidays, raise $38,000 for muscular dystrophy and was instrumental in bringing the Pink H eals Tour to St. Lucie C ounty. The tour raises money to help women with cancer, particularly breast cancer. Chief Parrish said the stop in St. Lucie County raised more money than any other stop in the state, and it was unscheduled until Mr. Stefani helped bring it about. M iller spent the time before we teed off explaining his thoughts on his design. He then gave an exhibition and soon we we re all off to take on the course. The highlight of my day and one of my fondest golf memories came at the par-5 14th hole. After a great drive that cut the corner I found myself with about 230 yards to the hole. With water left and not knowing what other peril lay ahead, I decided to lay up. Just after I selected my 7-iron to hit my shot, M iller rode up in his cart. He introduced himself and asked who had hit such a fine drive. N ot wanting Miller to think of me as a wimp, I quickly tried to exchange my iron for my 3-wood. He caught me. P lease, tell me you didnt drive all the way down here to lay up, Miller scolded. R ed-faced I replied, Well, certainly not with you here. I proceeded to hit one of the best pressure-filled shots of my life. My 3-wood shot found the right fringe of the green. Miller then proceeded to hit a high soft 4-wood out over the pond and smiled as it faded softly, settling about 15 feet from the hole. He smiled at me and commented that his shot was slightly better than mine. I then reminded him that Ive seen him putt and liked my chances of winning the hole. We shared a laugh. A few weeks ago, I r eturned to Harmony Golf Pr eserve. Ive been back a few times since that day and every time I thoroughly enjoy the course. This time I r ealized that years had passed since my last visit. I noticed that a lot more than just trees have grown here. Har mony is not just a golf course, but a town. There are over 7,700 acres of dedicated open space and 1,000 acres of protected lakes. Kids can walk to school from kindergarten through 12th grade. There are playgrounds, a beautiful clubhouse, a town square, dining and more available to residents and guests. I happen to favor the golf course. Ha rm ony Golf Preserve is a Troon Golf-managed facility, and truly one of F loridas finest golf experiences. The only Johnny M iller designed course in C entral Florida, it offers a challenge to players of all skill levels. What distinguishes Har mony is that it was designed to serve first as a fully protected environmental preserve and second as a world class recreational facility. The course wraps around existing lakes, oak and pine hammocks and w etlands. While there are no homes directly on the golf course, you may find y ourself having breakfast with one of the many var ieties of wildlife that call Har mony home. As you would expect, with all the lakes and wetland preserves, there is water on most holes here. However, M iller designed the course with plenty of room for error and there are only a couple of forced carries on the course. There are five sets of tees, the longest playing to just ov er 7,400 yards. Miller designed the course to be stretched out to nearly 8,000 yards should future equipment and skill require such a challenge. I find the course both enjoyable and challenging enough at 6,400 yards. My two favorite strings of holes are two through four and then 16 through 18. Each hole is unique and r equires a different type of shot and club selection. I find myself wishing Miller had more designs in my area. After your round, the staff will continue to make you feel just like a member. Stop and enjoy a cold beverage or a wonderful meal in the To wn Tavern. If youd like to freshen up before driving home, the 18,000 squarefoot clubhouse features a full locker room, complete with showers. N early every day has some special going on from two for one rounds to all y ou can play and days set aside just for seniors and ladies.
