W e know pets can offer a lot of emotional support. They are nonjudgmental. A person who is ill doesnt have to worry about entertaining the pet or looking good for the pet. Pets just bring a lot of joy. Thats why the group is held Pup-arazzi, a canine r ed carpet event on Jan. 21 to benefit the Pet Peace of Mind program. The fundraiser saw volunteers assist handsome hounds and beautiful bowsers who walked the red carpet for several contests, hoping to be named top dog, best fashionista, wearer of the best bling, best look alike and performer of the best trick. The Humane Society of the Tr easure Coast is lending its support for the program that began with a $5,000 grant from Banfield Charitable Tr ust. The pilot started in Martin C ounty last October and has since expanded into St. Lucie C ounty. It trains volunteers and allows them to take care of patients pets after making an assessment of each case. Volunteers take pets for grooming, normal vaccines, to the vet, provide help buying food when patients dont have enough money, walk dogs and give other help. This adds another element for people who might not normally consider hospice as a place to volunteer, Ms. Posdal said. It also allows social workers to help family members and patients plan for someone to take care of pets so the animals dont end up in shelters. W e re excited to have her (Ms. Fetterman), Ms. Book said. Shes a wonderful advocate. Ms. Book has gradually increased her walk each of the three years. She plans to walk 1,500 miles, hitting the east and west coasts of Florida, as well as the Panhandle. Sh e ll hold an event Feb. 1 at the Port St. Lucie Civic C enter at 9 a.m. with the sexual abuse awareness program of St. Lucie County. The following day, she will hold another such event in Ve ro B each at 9 a.m. More details were not available at press time. S he started her walk earlier this year because the F lorida Legislatures session began earlier than normal. While in Tallahassee, Ms. B ook plans to push for legislation to help victims relocate and for a central hotline where anyone can report cases of sexual abuse. S he also wants to improve laws regarding child sex trafficking, she said. C urrently, Ms. Book said, children who are forced to prostitute themselves face being arrested and charged with prostitution. S he finds that outrageous, as these children are not even old enough to consent to having sex in Florida, S he said. Ms. Book said she believes her walks have greatly increased awareness about the problem of child sexual abuse. Last week, she talked to more than 100 children in S outh Florida about how they can keep safe, she said. The banners first came into play in 2008, when Councilwoman Michelle Berger suggested it as a way to help business owners over the holiday season. It was used again for the holidays in 2010, and then extended for the entire 2011 y ear. Dur ing that time, business o wners did not have to pay a fee to have one banner up, but it had to be professionally created. The new suggestion is to allow businesses to have special signage up to four times a y ear, and that those seven-day time periods can be used consecutively. Nor mally, there is a permitting process and a $75 fee for a business to post a banner for a special event. The banners will need to be professionally created and follow the city guidelines for size. The St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce and the Port St. Lucie Area Council are both recommending this, crat Christopher Dzadovsky has filed to run again. The curr ent incumbent and county commission chairman, he was first elected in 2008. He s not alone.Running for the same seat is Republican B illy ODell. Also running for the seat is current Fort Pierce Mayor R obert Benton, who announced his intentions on J an. 18, After serving four terms on the Fort Pierce City Commission, two as District 2 commissioner and two as mayor, I will not be seeking another term as mayor, he said in a prepared statement. I am moving forward by filing paperwork and compiling a campaign staff to seek the office of St. Lucie County C ommission, District 4. F or the County Commission District 5 seat, two people have thrown their hats in the ring. Both Republicans, C ushman Radebaugh III and Al Rivett have both filed to run for the seat, currently being held by Democrat Chris Craft, who has yet to announce his intentions. Also up for election at the county commission this year is District 3 seat, currently held by Commissioner Paula Lewis. To date no one has filed to run for that seat. Only two seats are up for reelection at the St. Lucie County School Board, District 2 and D istrict 4. F or the St. Lucie County School Board District 2, only current school board member Car ol Hilson has filed. Also r unning alone in the race so far is School Board District 4 incumbent, Kathryn Hensley. In Fo rt Pierce, three seats are opening this year: the mayors seat, currently held by May or Benton and one seat in each of District 1 and District 2, currently held by commissioners Reggie Sessions and E ddie Becht. To date, only Linda Hudson has filed paperwork with the city showing her intension to r un for the mayors seat. In Po rt S t. Lucie, the two seats up for election this year are in District 2, currently being held by Councilwoman M ichelle Berger and District 4, currently being held by Councilman Jack Kelly. At this point, no one has filed paperwork for either seat. All constitutional officers in the county are up for re-election this year, including: clerk of circuit court, sheriff, property appraiser, tax collector and supervisor of elections. As of the end of January, J oseph Smith, the incumbent clerk of circuit court has filed to run, along with incumbents Sheriff Ken Mascara and property appraiser Ken Pr uitt. S tephanie Morgan has announced her intention to r un for the supervisor of elections position, currently held by Gertrude Walker. No one has yet filed to run for the property appraiser seat. Anyone who is interested in r unning for any of political seat can pick up qualifying paperwork from the supervisor of elections office, except for city races, where the paperwork can be picked up from the city clerks office. Lets unanimously proclaim him Saint Timothy of Sport and move on. There are many more athletes who do a great deal more for society than Tim Tebow. No more Casey AnthonyWhen is the day when we will no longer see Casey Anthony in the news? When will people understand that this woman is an egomaniac who craves attention? S he insists that others are leaking information about her, but I think she is doing it herself. The best treatment for Ms. Anthony is to ignore her totally and give the rest of us something else to see/hear in the news. In other words, go away Casey Anthony!Sick of deadbeat dadI realize that in this day and age with the economy in the state its in, everyone has something to complain about, the price of gas, the price of food, rising health costs just to name a few. All these things affect me, but like many other women, I am also faced with the never-ending chore of trying to collect child support from my sons dead beat dad. F or years its been a game of catch me if you can so I put the problem in the hands of court system to collect this debt. It s of no surprise that they havent been successful, either. It seems to me that they dont really try too hard. M ost of the burden of information gathering lands right back in my lap. Y ou would think with the technology they have at their fingertips, they could find out where hes working or even if hes working. And if he works off the books, as I suspect is the case here, there should be another way of collecting this money. In my case, both my current husband and myself are lucky enough to be working, but between his two kids and my one there isnt a spare penny to be had. I have a growing son who needs clothing, shoes, school supplies and other expenses. None of those expenses are being shared by his so-called father. If the system that we depend on to help us is ineffectual, then it needs to be fixed. Perhaps the people who are doing these jobs should find employment more suited to their talents, which are evidently slim to none. The only time we hear about how the state is going to crack down on deadbeat dads is during an election y ears. W ell, heres the election year. Now lets vote the loafers out and put people in that really want to work.Unfair practicesI want to know where the fairness is for the government to collect staggering code violation dollars on abandoned and foreclosed homes, though not do anything as far as getting the grass cut on these homes when the banks r efuse to maintain these foreclosed properties. Now, Im not talking 12inches of grass height. Try 4to 5-feet high and all the bugs, rodents, vagrants, crime it brings. Not to mention the message it states. The gall to be told by county that, were not in the grass cutting business is appalling. Damn right youre not, yo u re in the lien business. The code department has liens on these properties for weed violation which accrue at $100 a day. Now, multiply that by several years. Yu p, some of these liens are way more than the value of the home ever was or could ever be. Imagine having more than $100,000, yes $100,000 in code violation fines that accrue at $100 a day plus water/sewer fines in the thousands to boot. Now, if the home gets sold, the ever-staggering daily accruing lien amounts by county code and utilities by statue must be paid first. The new buyer has to pay this. The lien doesnt go with the person whom created the debt. It blatantly sends the message that the county prefers to deter new ownership of these foreclosed homes because its lucrative for the county. Gives a real warm community feeling. Now I know why there is no statue on the books to go after these banks in a timely manner which refuse to maintain these foreclosed properties: it profits the county. I have inquired if these county liens are ever forgiven, but dont get a straight answer. Apparently thats deemed sensitive classified material. Check for EthanolF or the past three or four weeks, my van was cutting off, acting sluggish. I did not think of the possibility that it was because of the gasoline I was buying. A friend told me to just fill it up the last time it became half empty with a supreme gas just to see if my van stopped stalling out. The Wal-mart gas stations have now added ethanol to the gas, so pay attention folks. Maybe thats your problem, too. We hope that the new year has started well for y ou all. After three years of what historians will undoubtedly recognize as the toughest years since the Great Depression, it looks like we have seen the worst and the good times are starting again. I have written a few columns over the past few months, none of which have been really good columns to write, but it is with a happy heart that I write this one. H ometown News is back! B ack to the growing, successful and happy place we we re for the first six and a half years of our existence. W ith a lot of sacrifice from all of our team members over the past three y ears, and a lot of support from my partners, Vernon and Chris Smith, we have managed to survive this run of tough times. I know a lot of pundits have predicted the end of the printed word, and I might have to agree with them if I were in the daily newspaper business, but the strength of the w eekly community newspaper has never been greater. Over the past three years, we have secured more than 170,000 subscribers out of our 240,000 households delivered. Over the course of those same three years, daily newspaper subscriptions have dropped anywhere from 30 percent to 50 percent. Local, weekly news is what communities are looking for, and there is nowhere they can find more than in America's most honored newspaper group ov er the past decade, H ometown News W ith this in mind, H ometown News will soon be coming to a few more communities. O ur last expansion was opening up our East Volusia C ounty office with three editions serving the communities along the coast. The next expansion will be to complete our coverage of V olusia with two new newspapers serving the W est Volusia markets of D eltona, Orange City, De Ba ry and DeLand, Lake H elen and Cassadaga. That's right, after years of r equests for us to provide quality news for the West V olusia market, here we come! In an economy where a lot of businesses are still fighting the fight, we are taking the fight to West V olusia. We are extremely excited about this move into what we know to be a vibrant and growing community. We will continue to provide the best in local news, information and advertising. We understand the responsibility we are undertaking and promise to continue to do our best to earn your respect, appreciation and business. Fe b. 24 will be a big day for both West Volusia and for H ometown News We both will begin a new r elationship that will grow and prosper for the years to come. Most clients become aware of kidney disease in their pet when they become clinically ill.The most common clinical signs are an increased thirst, increased urination, weight loss, and in the latter stages diminished appetite. The two main functions of the kidneys are to excrete urinary biproducts and to concentrate urine. As the kidneys fail, they are unable to concentrate urine and the pet dehydrates. They try to compensate by drinking more. Unfortunately, they cannot drink enough to replenish what they have lost, and they dehydrate more, worsening the kidneys function. The other main function of the kidneys is to rid the body of urinary waste products, ie urea and creatinine. These are products of protein metabolism and are toxic.A normal functioning kidney removes these toxins in the urine. When the kidney begins to fail, these toxins build up in the bloodstream, causing inappetance, nausea, and ulcers. The kidneys have to be 80% compromised before the first elevations in kidney enzymes are noted in the blood work. This is why early preventive blood screening is so important. T reatment is aimed at restoring hydration and flushing the b loodstream of these urinary toxins. In the early stages of kidney disease, we treat with a low protein diet and check blood pressure.Hypertension can cause kidney disease and vice v ersa.If hypertension is present, we treat with anti-hypertension drugs which can help preserve kidney function as well.We always check a urine sample. The urine is an excellent barometer of kidney function.Dilute urine and protein in the urine are indicators that the kidneysfunction is becoming compromised. As the disease progresses, we prescribe medications that can help combat the urinary toxins. In the latter stages of diminished kidney disease, we often begin intravenous or subcutaneous (under the skin) fluid administration. This helps flush out the impurities and rehydrates the patient.Clients can be taught administer subcutaneous fluids at home. This is very easy to do, w ell tolerated, and cost effective. We have had clients manage their petskidney disease for years with these treatment protocols. The take home message is, routine wellness screenings will enable us to detect kidney and other diseases at their earliest, most treatable, and least expensive stages. LUCIE COUNTY I nstead of out with old, in the new, Sunrise Theatre in Fo rt Pierce embraced the old, and as a result, gave itself a new look and successful image. While renovating the theater, the original monogram was discovered by the architects. The original monogram was in gold, and shows a large letter S with the letter T coming down through the middle of it. The two letters are surr ounded by a shield. It is believed the original monogram was created when the theatre was first built. They were washing the walls when they found the monogram, said Renee P age, marketing director. J arrett Ellis, a historic painter, joined the team to help rebuild the design. H e removed years of dirt and paint to uncover the beauty of the design, she said. That design came into play at the beginning of this season when Ms. Page was working to give the theater the regal feel it deserved by changing the logo. I was walking through the building and saw the design everywhere, on the sconces, on the garbage cans, she said. I thought, Why are we not usingBy Dawn Krebsdkrebs@hometownnewsol.com See LOG O, A10

W ith that, the old design was incorporated, and Sunr ise Theatres new logo was born. J ohn Wilkes (executive director) was awesome through this project, she said. He gave me the room to run with this idea, and it has paid off. W ith the level of talent that has crossed the stage so far this season, it is turning out to be the most successful season yet for the theater. This year weve got Sinbad, Roberta Flack, Paul Anka, Bill Cosby and so much more to make it our best season ever, Ms. Page said. We are now known for the level of talent we are bringing to Fort Pierce. We have arrived. The theater even added the chance for patrons to meet the stars face to face in a special red-carpet event, and the new logo plays an important role. I wanted this red carpet feeling of regalness for our patrons and the performers, she said. So all the meet and greets now happen on a red carpet donated by T win Brothers Flooring in Po rt S t. Lucie, with the logo prominently displayed in the background. This has come together with so much synergy, Ms. P age said. Now the brand of the theatre matches the image, that matches the logo. And it all works together to benefit the patron. It can only get better. VERO BEACH The Ve ro B each High School Lady Indians varsity basketball team had a home court win over the St. L ucie West Centennial H igh School Eagles 49-42, last Tuesday at the John B. W itt gym. C oming out to the court in the first quarter with 19 points, gave the Indians momentum through the game. Each team was moving the ball around well. The I ndians clearly made their plays with little pressure from the Eagles until later in the quarter. The Indians accuracy gave them points on the board, either in making their first shot attempts or r ebounding quickly and netting. The Eagles came back in the second quarter, pressuring the Indians, keeping them to only 6 points. Scoring 10 points, the Eagles closed the gap so the Indians only had a 7point lead. The Indians still lead 2518 going into the half. F ouls were the biggest problem of the game. The scoreboard only allows 10 fouls. The first half had 9 Eagle fouls and 6 Indian fouls. The second half had 12 Indian fouls and 18 Eagle fouls. The Indians came into the second half with Jasmine Brown stealing the ball from the Eagles and r unning it down for a layup. I t was a rough game, said Brown. I could have done better on my free throws, but it was a good game. ST. The rest of the game was dependant on who was a better free-throw shooter. The Indians scored 15 points in the third quarter; 9 points were free throws. The Eagles were hard pressed in the fourth quarter. The Indians fouled some as well, but didnt give up as many free-point shots. The Indians scored only free throw shots, making nine of 16. Margie Smith scored 4 free throws and Bro wn scored 3. The Eagles scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, 6 by Princess Bailey, but it was not enough to catch up to the Indians, though they might have won had they not fouled as much. I t s rough and there we re a lot of fouls and it slowed the pace of the game and were not used to a slow tempo game, said Indians Coach R ahshard Morgan. Offensively we need to get more patient and be committed to the offensive plays. The tempo was a problem for both teams. I think we could have been better on the pressure and handled their 12-1-1 pressure, said Eagles Coach Benjamin Schewenbraten. We just need to take care of the ball better and try and slow them down. They we re making us play at a higher tempo that we are used to playing with. The Indians are 4-0 in the conference with the No 1 seed and are headed to the playoffs at Centennial in Port St. Lucie in F ebruary. www.HometownNewsOL.com F riday, January 27, 2012 Po rt St. Lucie B5 4302 Gator Trace Dr., Ft.
