(But) they are definitely en-US going to receive 1 million dolen-US-en-US lars as a discount for the fill en-US dirt. Probably future fill dirt en-US will reduce it by another milen-US -en-US lion.en-US This is a huge victory. We en-US can now begin to focus on the en-US life changing work for our en-US homeless friends, and really to en-US make the community better en-US for everybody, he said. I en-US think this is going to transen-US-en-US form the community. With en-US our 140 beds we expect to turn en-US them over several times a year. en-US I think at least half of our en-US guests will work themselves en-US off the streets into permanent en-US housing.en-US Jim Cameron, representing en-US the Daytona Beach Regional en-US Chamber of Commerce, said, en-US We still maintain our posien-US-en-US tion in support of the shelter. en-US We are going on record en-US tonight to ask you to move en-US forward on this contract. We en-US need to get this built. We need en-US to get this open. He is able en-US to sense when shes anxious en-US and signals her to pet him en-US which soothes her anxiety. en-US Mako also is trained to help en-US her with mobility.en-US In the military when you en-US have a friend with you, it is en-US called a battle buddy, she said. en-US Now, I have a battle buddy en-US that just happens to be a dog. en-US Ms. Meurer said when she en-US first came to ERAU as an en-US undergrad, being older and en-US from a different state, she en-US didnt know the area and she en-US felt really alone. As part of en-US University 101 and a peer en-US counselor, she can help others en-US learn what she learned on her en-US own. Job duties consist of en-US planning classes for the entire en-US college experience so new veten-US -en-US eran students dont have to en-US worry about taking the wrong en-US classes. Giving them different en-US options on how to keep up in en-US the coursework, so they can en-US stay in school. Getting them en-US through that first semester of en-US collegeen-US It is very hard for veterans en-US to transition into college, she en-US said. Whatever they have en-US problems with, I try to help en-US them.en-US A lot of people dont underen-US -en-US stand veterans. Were just noren-US -en-US mal people. We did a job, we en-US came back home and we are en-US just trying to live our lives like en-US everybody else, Ms. Meurer en-US said. It takes a lot of underen-US -en-US standing between everyone to en-US try and make things work. You en-US cant expect the civilian world en-US to be the military because that en-US is not how it is going to be. en-US College is a stepping stone en-US of what life is going to be. You en-US cant control the people en-US around you. You try and teach en-US the younger classmen how to en-US prepare for life and they are en-US trying to teach you how to deal en-US with everything around you en-US and you just have to take it in en-US stride. You are trying to teach en-US each other, you are just trying en-US to learn. en-US People think of veterans en-US with PTSD as angry, and shut en-US down and are closed off from en-US the world. en-US I did the exact opposite, I en-US did an extreme amount of en-US work and never took any time en-US for myself and realized I was en-US still not dealing with things, en-US Ms. Meurer said. Mako has en-US taught me to start saying no en-US and start saying yes to myself.en-US She added the class and peer en-US mentoring experience is a en-US good way for veterans to make en-US connections.en-US We are so used to comaraen-US -en-US derie and we dont have that en-US anymore when we leave, she en-US said. To bring a veteran only en-US group into University 101 is en-US unlike any other class you are en-US going to have.en-US Peer mentors mainly focus en-US on academic plans. She has 12 en-US students she works with that en-US can call her any time. The proen-US -en-US gram, officially known as Colen-US -en-US lege Success, is geared towards en-US freshmen and transfers. She en-US gives the first-year students en-US study tips and other skills on en-US being successful. en-US Ms. Meurer received a bachen-US -en-US elors degree in May in Homeen-US -en-US land Security. She is glad she en-US made the decision to attend en-US ERAU.en-US They treat veterans very en-US well, she said.en-US Once she gets her graduate en-US degree she would like to go en-US back home to Kentucky and en-US work on the opioid crisis.en-US I am really interested in en-US government work, obviously en-US anything that works in intellien-US -en-US gence, Ms. Meurer said. Anyen-USen-USthing that has to do with law en-US enforcement. Ultimately I just en-US want to make a difference. I en-US may not be wearing the unien-US -en-US form, but Ill be able to serve en-US through the civil sector. en-US She transferred to ERAU in en-US 2015 from a community colen-US-en-US lege in Kentucky, following a en-US little over five years in the en-US Army, according to informaen-US -en-US tion provided by the school. en-US She helped re-establish the en-US Student Veterans Organizaen-US-en-US tion and serves on the Homeen-US -en-US land Security Student Associaen-US-en-US tion; the Order of the Sword en-US and Shield, the security studies en-US honor society; Omicron Delta en-US Kappas leadership honor socien-US-en-US ety; and Sigma Sigma Sigma en-US sorority. This is something we en-US can do and I am prepared to en-US support it.en-US City Manager Jim Chisholm en-US stated he felt the facility was en-US properly sized at this time for en-US the population it will serve. en-US Mayor Derrick Henry, in an en-US impassioned speech, described en-US how the city has been critien-US -en-US cized at every turn and how en-US the whole project is not an en-US easy pill for the city to swallow. en-US However, he said, I dont en-US like the price. But we have en-US already paid a price as a comen-US-en-US munity and we continue to pay en-US a price every single day. And en-US we pay an emotional price. Its en-US had a toll on our community. en-US You cant really calculate what en-US it has cost. Right now, it takes en-US resolve to do what we have en-US said we are going to do and en-US push forward. I am not preen-US -en-US pared to go down a road that en-US will take us backwards and en-US create any more delays. We en-US pay a price for the delays.en-US Commissioner Rob Gillilen-US -en-US and was the lone dissenter. en-US What I was expecting was en-US something that was maybe one en-US step above a barn, he said. en-US What we are getting is someen-US-en-US thing one step below a hospien-US-en-US tal. Im just not comfortable en-US with the process we are going en-US through to this point.en-US Commissioner Aaron Delen-US-en-US gado countered by saying en-US parts of the shelter should be en-US like a hospital for medical and en-US humanitarian purposes. en-US Every day the wear and tear en-US on our community continues. en-US It is better to get it going and en-US to have some action now than en-US to continue to do nothing and en-US to wait for some perfect plan en-US to coalesce, he said. It hasnt en-US coalesced in eight years. We en-US have to go forth with what en-US weve got. Weve come too far en-US to turn around. I think its necen-US -en-US essary to do what weve set out en-US to do. en-US APM will use tilt-wall conen-US -en-US struction for the building. It is en-US anticipated the shelter will en-US open next summer. The founen-US -en-US dation is finished, the archien-US-en-US tecture is done and the tilt en-US walls can go up quickly, en-US according to Mr. Geallis. en-US Gods hand is in this from en-US the beginning and it is built on en-US a foundation of the love of en-US Jesus, which is really what we en-US want to bring to our homeless en-US friends. en-US Fundraising is still needed en-US for equipment and furnishen-US-en-US ings. en-USContracten-USFrom page A1

He has built the art en-US deco Club 31, The Grind and en-US Tiki Hut, and made Rose Villa en-US into a showplace restaurant, en-US among others.en-US Most of this has been done en-US under the guidance of Kevin en-US Wakefield and now he is en-US planning to open a craft en-US brewery and grill in the old en-US 1919 Ormond Garage that en-US once served as an engine shop en-US for the original Gasoline Alley en-US Ormond Garage, which en-US burned in 1976. The garage, en-US which sits right on Granada, is en-US one of the few surviving relics en-US of Ormond Beachs racing past en-US and, in my opinion, is the only en-US place to suitably display the en-US Stanley Rocket. en-US The car had been on loan to en-US Daytona International en-US Speedway for years and had en-US not been displayed in Ormond en-USBeach since the early s. en-US Suzanne and I took a couple en-US meetings with Mr. Jones, his en-US assistant Dorian Burt and Mr. en-US Wakefield to discuss the en-US possibilities and came to an en-US agreement. When we contacten-US -en-US ed Robert Carolin and en-US Stephan Sibley of the citys en-US Leisure Services Department, en-US we were pleased to find them en-US excited about the possibilities. en-US Members of our club, The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association, and the city staff en-US have always hoped to display en-US the car in Ormond Beach en-US where it belongs. en-US While I tend to act as en-US though the car is mine, it does en-US belongs to the city and they en-US would have the final say. I en-US attended the City Commission en-US meeting Nov. 5 to answer any en-US questions that may have come en-US up as the loan was being en-US approved. I did not go there en-US expecting to speak, but when en-US the agenda item came up en-US Commissioner Rick Boehm en-US asked me if I would step to the en-US mike to tell the crowd of the en-US importance of the Stanley en-US Rocket. (It takes little to get en-US me talking about one of my en-US favorite subjects.)en-US After I spoke, Mr. Boehm en-US read a letter from Mr. Jones, en-US who was unable to attend. It en-US said he was appreciative to be en-US entrusted with the care of such en-US a valuable antique. He spoke en-US of his love for Ormond Beach en-US and his efforts to keep the en-US history alive. A nice letter en-US from a first class guy.en-US Over the years, I have been en-US approached several times to en-US open a Birthplace of Speed en-US Museum, but I have had so en-US many friends fail with such an en-US undertaking, I was always en-US reluctant. Now with the race en-US car as the centerpiece, Mr. en-US Wakefied is planning to run en-US the brewery as the long-needen-US -en-US ed museum. Then, at the worst possible time, the senior or a member of their family must scramble to nd a new, safe place for the loved-one to live. The Internet is the last place they should go,What they need is boots on the ground in the community, someone whos familiar with local assisted living facilities, has visited and evaluated them, and can knowledgeably recommend them to our seniors, just as we would to our own parents. Rose emphasized that Assisted Living Made Simple doesnt take shortcuts with seniors seeking a new forever home. Before they begin the search, they nd out what their client wants and needs. When we interview the senior / family we consider everything, including the emotional, nancial, social, and medical needs. While cost is always a factor in choosing an assisted living facility, Rose pointed out many seniors are unaware of what benets they could qualify for, and the dierent nancial arrangements that could be made. A8 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USAen-USside from their en-US homes, Individual en-US Retirement Accounts en-US are some of the largest assets en-US people own. en-US So, how are these funds en-US passed on at death? Normalen-US -en-US ly, when filling out the en-US paperwork for an IRA, an en-US individual person is desigen-US -en-US nated as the beneficiary. en-US Often, however, a sole en-US beneficiary isnt the best en-US choice. en-US What happens if a wife is en-US the beneficiary to her en-US husbands IRA and, although en-US they have no children en-US together, they each have en-US children from a prior en-US marriage? The husband en-US might want to provide for his en-US current wife, but worked his en-US whole life to leave a legacy to en-US his own children. If the IRA en-US becomes the wifes property en-US at her husbands death, she en-US will have complete control of en-US it. She may leave the money en-US to her children (from her en-US previous marriage) and en-US exclude his children, en-US altogether!en-US An IRA Trust (also called en-US a Retirement Benefits Trust) en-US could provide a solution. en-US With an IRA Trust, a person en-US can designate who gets his/en-US her IRA, how it is distributen-US -en-US ed, and when. This is not en-US just a problem-solver when en-US there are children from prior en-US marriages. en-US Consider the dilemma of en-US adult children who are en-US unable to handle large en-US amounts of money (or have en-US spouses who are irresponsien-US -en-US ble with money). What if the en-US child is in a bad marriage en-US that may end in divorce? en-US What if he/she has an en-US alcohol or drug addiction, or en-US has special needs? Is leaving en-US a large, lump sum IRA to en-US any of these individuals a en-US good idea? Probably not.en-US Though it may sound a bit en-US harsh, with an IRA Trust, en-US you can actually control en-US your IRA from the grave! en-US And, thats a good thing! en-US Example: Your 27-year-old en-US son, Parker, spends each en-US paycheck before it even hits en-US his bank account. You know en-US that if Parker were the sole en-US beneficiary of your $400,000 en-US IRA, the money would be en-US gone in a year, or maybe two, en-US at most. With an IRA Trust, en-US you could specify at what en-US age Parker would receive en-US your IRA (perhaps, age 50) en-US and how much would be en-US distributed to him from the en-US trust each year. This way, en-US your IRA could provide en-US funds throughout your sons en-US lifetime, with less risk that it en-US will be spent quickly.en-US One last scenario: What en-US would happen if both you en-US and your spouse were to pass en-US away in an accident? Should en-US you ever designate minor en-US children as IRA beneficiaen-US -en-US ries? If so, the childrens en-US guardian would be in control en-US of their finances, but at age en-US 18, the children would likely en-US gain full control of the IRA en-US monies you left behind! en-US Most people would probably en-US agree that 18 is too young to en-US manage, what could be, en-US hundreds of thousands of en-US dollars. You might want to en-US consider an IRA Trust, so a en-US trustee could oversee the en-US money until your children en-US reached the age of maturity en-US that you designate. en-US Keep all this in mind when en-US you are setting up, or en-US reviewing, your IRA benefien-US -en-US ciaries. Of course, youll en-US need to consult an attorney en-US regarding your situation and en-US the particulars of an IRA en-US Trust.en-US David D. A12 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USYen-USep, I can tell from my en-US email it is the time of en-US year when the populaen-US -en-US tion of Volusia County swells en-US with part timers from points en-US north.en-USMany are new to the area en-US and have arrived ready to fish. en-US To be sure, getting out on the en-US water during our near perfect en-US fall weather is a strong call. en-US Unfortunately many of the en-US newcomers (and some of the en-US locals) have no idea how to get en-US started. en-US Each year at this time I get en-US notes asking which rods and en-US reels to use, what hooks, en-US which baits to use and where en-US to go to fish. If you are a en-US regular reader, you know each en-US week, as I tell my own fishing en-US adventures, I try to include en-US tips and methods that have en-US either helped me succeed or en-US resulted in failure. en-US Without beating you over en-US the head with it, I talk about en-US the tide, the sand and oyster en-US bars, the weather and the fish en-US movement. That last one is en-US probably the most important en-US and is surely the most difficult en-US for me to try and teach in en-US print. Just know that if you en-US can locate fish, you can catch en-US them. en-US In the paper, I can tell you en-US exactly which rod and reel I en-US use and what bait they hit, but en-US I cannot locate the fish for en-US you. That is a talent gleaned en-US from years of experience. All I en-US can tell you is be persistent en-US and pay attention. You wont en-US become a great fisherman by en-US going once a week or by giving en-US up after a couple hours.en-US I often talk about seeing red en-US drum moving under the water en-US and people will then ask how I en-US can tell them from the large en-US mullet. That takes time to en-US learn, but remember, if you en-US are not sure, then it is usually en-US a mullet. A keeper-sized red en-US leaves a definite type of en-US straight wake you cant miss. en-US Mullet will mostly go in en-US circles. en-US Fishing in Volusia County is en-US varied with inshore, offshore, en-US surf or fresh water. Learning en-US any one of those will keep you en-US busy for a while. Week in and en-US week out, Fishing With Dan en-US targets the inshore, but on en-US occasion I will visit all the en-US others. en-US Whenever I tell a snowbird en-US our inshore shallow waters en-US provide the better fishing, en-US they are stunned and someen-US -en-US what left in disbelief. After all, en-US they have watched the Florida en-US fishing TV shows where en-US anglers land big marlin and en-US sailfish. You wont catch those en-US inshore, but you will catch en-US some very nice reds, trout, en-US sheeps head, flounder, drum en-US and snook. Of course, that en-US means abandoning all that en-US heavy tackle you brought en-US down from the Great Lakes. en-US Our best fishing is done with en-US light tackle. en-US On practically every trip, I en-US use a medium light, seven-US -en-US en-foot rod with a number 25 en-US (2500) reel that is spooled en-US with 10-pound mono. en-US Although I dont use any en-US leader, I would advise it for en-US anyone beginning. That does en-US not mean steel. Go to 25 or 30 en-US pound braid for a leader. en-US Small 1/0 hooks are fine for en-US most inshore game fish. en-US Mostly I use no weight, but if I en-US must add lead, I only go with en-US split shot. en-US If you have managed to en-US locate hungry fish, you can en-US usually catch them with most en-US any bait. The bait shops are en-US lined with fancy artificial lures en-US and most of them will work. en-US You will discover your favorite en-US by having success with one of en-US them. Whenever I get to a en-US place where fish are readily en-US feeding, I like to take new en-US lures out of my box to try. If en-US hungry fish wont hit them, en-US they will turn up at my wifes en-US next garage sale. en-US Red drum, snook, sea trout en-US and flounder will hit live en-US natural bait or fresh cut bait. en-US Reds, black drum and sheeps en-US head will bite any shrimp, crab en-US or shell fish. These are not en-US rules, but a good guideline. en-US Well, that covers most of it. en-US Get out and give it a try and en-US keep those letters coming. I en-US will always try to help when I en-US can. en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-USwaters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years. The annual school supply drive collects school supplies for the needy en-US children of Volusia County.en-USQuack! en-USWen-UShat is all the fuss en-US about eating turkey? en-USOK, OK, its high en-US in protein and low in fat, a en-US low-carb dieters dream. It is en-US also an inexpensive source of en-US iron, zinc, phosphorus, en-US potassium and B-vitamins. en-US Turkey does have a strange en-US power, though. It has the en-US ability to be a natural sedative. en-US Turkey has an amino acid en-US called tryptophan that helps en-US the body produce the B-vitaen-US -en-US min niacin, which in turn en-US helps the body to produce en-US serotonin that acts as a en-US calming agent in the brain and en-US plays a role in sleep. Now you en-US know why everyone falls en-US asleep after Thanksgiving en-US dinners. en-US By the way, it was Abraham en-US Lincoln who had Thanksgiven-US -en-US ing declared a federal holiday en-US in 1864.en-US Turkey is a variety of the en-US pheasant and recent fossil en-US evidence shows turkeys have en-US roamed the Americas for 10 en-US million years. I cant quite en-US understand that dinosaurs en-US didnt make it, but turkeys did. en-US The Aztecs are believed to en-US be the first to domesticate the en-US turkey. And Christopher en-US Columbus brought turkeys en-US back to Europe and, by the en-US 1500s, turkeys were being en-US raised domestically in Italy, en-US France and England for en-US royalty and the aristocracy.en-US Turkey with all the trimen-US -en-US mings was the first meal eaten en-US on the moon by astronauts en-US Neil Armstrong and Buzz en-US Aldrin.en-US Now that you know what all en-US the fuss is over turkeys, lets en-US talk about the best part en-US eating turkey. Do you like it en-US smoked, fried, braised, baked, en-US boiled or stewed? What is en-US best is really up to you, but en-US here are a few tips that might en-US help: en-US Purchase at least one en-US pound of uncooked turkey en-US per person for dinner and en-US leftovers. If your family en-US members have big appetites en-US figure on one and one half en-US pounds per person.en-US Fresh or frozen? Both are en-US great choices. I prefer fresh, en-US though. I think it is a little en-US moister when cooked. Fresh en-US turkey may only be kept in the en-US refrigerator one to two days en-US before cooking.en-US Frozen turkey should be en-US thawed in the refrigerator. 8 to 12 lbs. 1 to 2 da ys 12 to 16 lbs. 2 to 3 da ys 16 to 20 lbs. 3 to 4 da ys 20 to 24 lbs. 4 to 5 da ys en-USOnce the turkey is thawed, en-US it may only be refrigerated en-US one to two days before en-US cooking.en-US It is best to cook stuffing en-US outside the bird in a separate en-US dish. The turkey will cook en-US faster, and the breast will en-US retain moisture better. If you en-US decide to stuff the turkey, stuff en-US it just prior to cooking. en-US Dressing should cook to an en-US internal temperature of 165 en-US degrees. en-US How much stuffing is en-US enough? Usually one cup per en-US pound of turkey.en-US A thermometer is the best en-US way to tell if a turkey is done. en-US The dark meat must reach 165 en-US degrees. Be careful not to en-US touch bone when temping, as en-US you will get an inaccurate en-US reading. When reheating en-US turkey the next day, it should en-US be heated to 165 degrees.en-US To store cooked turkey, it en-US should be placed in a covered en-US container, plastic food bag, or en-US wax paper and aluminum foil en-US for up to 7 days in the refrigeren-US -en-US ator or three months in the en-US freezer.en-US Season the cavity with your en-US secret ingredients for best en-US results. As for myself, I love en-US garlic hmmm, my father en-US used to call it Greek perfume!en-US My all-time favorite en-US sandwich is made from en-US left-over turkey.
