en-USCity planning boarden-US recommends apartments en-USThe Port Orange Planning Commission voted en-US Thursday, Oct. 25, to recommend approval of the en-US construction of a new apartment complex to the en-US City Council.en-US The applicant, POA Development LLC, asked the en-US city to rezone 29.7 acres to a Port Orange Planned en-US Commercial Development for a 310-unit multi-famen-US -en-US ily apartment complex. The planned location for the en-US complex is on Reed Canal Road, between Clyde en-US Morris Boulevard and Atlantic High School.en-US According to city documents, The general layout en-US and improvements associated with this development en-US will comply with the requirements of the Land en-US Development Code and the Master Developen-US -en-US ment Agreement.en-US The documents also say the proposed locaen-US -en-US tion will not interfere with the surrounding en-US landscape, storm water retention, or school en-US capacity.en-US Penelope Cruz, Port Orange planning manager, en-US stated that the zoning phase is still underway. And, en-US she added, it is unknown when construction will en-US begin.en-US However, after the second reading in front of the en-US City Council, the rezoning and annexation should en-US be approved at the Dec. 18 meeting.en-US New Port isnt the only apartments project in Port en-US Orange, en-US or even the only one en-US on Reed Canal Road.en-US Under staff review are Lazul at Crystal Lake, a en-US 288-unit multi-family apartment complex on 19.6 en-US acres on Reed Canal, and Springs at Port Orange, en-US 292 unit multi-family apartment complex on 24.71 en-US acres at Summer Trees Road and Willamson Bouleen-US -en-US vard. en-USThe Volusia County Counen-US -en-US cil approved more than $3.5 en-US million in required local en-US funding while gaining more en-US than $22.8 million for behaven-US -en-US ioral, drug and alcohol abuse en-US treatment programs.en-US This addresses our alcoen-US-en-US hol and drug abuse contracts en-US with four different agencies en-US this year the Stuart-Marchen-US-en-US man Act, House Next Door, en-US Halifax Health Medical Cenen-US -en-US ter and, new this year, the en-US Childrens Home Society, en-US said Donna DeMarsh Butler, en-US county community services en-US director. en-US Despite the large amount en-US of funding, its not an en-US increase over last years en-US expenditures for the treaten-US-en-US ments and services. And, en-US some council members en-US believe, the value and need of en-US these services in the county en-US warrant a closer look for en-US increased funding in years to en-US come.en-US I think this is a good conen-US-en-US tract, and we are moving in en-US the right direction, said en-US Councilwoman Joyce en-US Cusack. I know we did not en-US increase the funding, which en-US is problematic for me, en-US because it is such a dire en-US need.en-US Although Councilwoman en-US Cusack will leave the council en-US in December, having reached en-US her term limit, she said she en-US hopes future council memen-US-en-US bers will consider raising the en-US bar and the funding for these en-US much-needed services.en-US I think we need to keep it en-US on the radar, she said. We en-US need to get more funding en-US through our state for these en-USCounty Council en-US divvies up social en-US services funding en-USSuicide byen-US veterans is a en-US national tragedyen-USHe was in a lot of physical en-US and emotional pain, which I en-US believe is why he ultimately en-US took his own life. He died en-US way too young, said Diane en-US Adams, the wife of U.S. Navy en-US Desert Storm veteran Jimmie en-US Adams.en-US The South Daytona resien-US -en-US dent was found dead the en-US morning of Oct. 16. en-US Although the official cause of en-US death is pending, all signs en-US point to suicide.en-US He was 49 years old. He en-US and his wife had been togethen-US -en-US er for 10 years. en-US Mr. Adams is part of a disen-US-en-US turbing trend in the United en-US States.en-US The U.S. Department of en-US Veterans Affairs updated its en-US 2016 national suicide data en-US report in September, showen-US-en-US ing suicide rates were 1.5 en-US times greater for veterans en-US than non-veterans, after en-US adjusting for age and gender. en-US There were more than 6,000 en-US veteran suicides each year en-US from 2008 to 2016. en-US As all veterans are honored en-US this Veterans Day, the memen-US-en-US ory of those veterans lost to en-US suicide as well as the plight of en-US those still struggling with en-US post-traumatic stress disoren-US -en-US der and other debilitating en-US issues also should be rememen-US-en-US bered. en-US The pain of losing her husen-US -en-US band is still raw to Ms. en-US Adams, and the girls he left en-US behind. en-US He was a good dad. He en-US loved his girls very much, en-US Ms. Adams said. He was a en-US member of the Marine Corps en-US League (and) he volunteered en-US with Halifax Health Hospice. en-US He helped them with veteren-US -en-US ans pinning. He was part of en-US the Homeless Veteran Stand en-US Down since the beginning.en-US Mr. Adams was a fun guy en-US who loved being around peoen-US -en-US ple, she said. He loved to en-US laugh and see others laugh. en-US He was a great singer. Karaen-US -en-US oke was a favorite thing for en-US him to do. He was a kid at en-US heart and never wanted to en-US grow up.en-US Ms. Adams added, He en-US never complained. He never en-US had a bad word to say about en-US anyone. If you tried to say en-US something bad about someen-US-en-US one and he heard you, he en-US would always say hes not a en-US bad guy, just give him a en-US chance. en-USWarm en-US Coats & en-US Warm en-US Hearts en-US Coat en-US Driveen-USDaytona Beachs Communien-US-en-US ty Healing Project will be feaen-US-en-US tured in the 11th annual Warm en-US Coats and Warm Hearts Coat en-US Drive sponsored by Burlingen-US-en-US ton Coat Factory and Good en-US Morning America.en-US The campaign was created en-US to assist children and families en-US in impoverished communities en-US throughout the country by en-US providing free coats to keep en-US them warm during the cold en-US winters.en-US Dyrell Rell Johnson, en-US founder of Community Healen-US -en-US ing Project, said, We became en-USUnity on paradeen-USRandy Barber/staff photographeren-USFirst grader Tiara Cutler waves a sign as she and others walk around the en-US school to promote love and unity during Warner Christian Preschools 2nd en-US annual Love and Unity in Our Community Parade on Friday, Nov. 2. CRITERIA 386-257-9950 en-USAen-USs we near Veterans Day en-US 2018, I have been made en-US aware of a worthwhile en-US program to remember our en-US veterans. en-USBob Fletcher of Seaside en-US Auto Repair in Ormond-by-en-US the-Sea gave me a flyer from en-US the Rolling Thunder Fl-8 club en-US of Ormond Beach. That en-US chapter is part of a national en-US motorcycle club formed to en-US honor veterans and help deal en-US with the problem of POW-en-US MIAs. There are 90 chapters of en-US Rolling Thunder with around en-US 8,000 members. en-US This year the local club is en-US once more taking part in the en-US Wreaths Across America en-US program. The goal is to place en-US donated wreaths on the graves en-US of some of our more forgotten en-US heroes who served our en-US country. Wreaths Across en-US America was begun in 1992 by en-US Mr. Morrell Worchester of en-US Harrington, Maine. He ran a en-US wreath-making company and en-US when the holidays were over, en-US found he had made more en-US wreaths than he could sell.en-US Instead of repurposing or en-US destroying them, he was en-US reminded of a trip he had en-US taken to Arlington National en-US Cemetery when he was but a en-US boy. Mr. Worchester took the en-US wreaths to Arlington and en-US placed them on the graves of en-US soldiers in a part of the en-US cemetery that received little en-US attention. From that thoughten-US -en-US ful act began Wreaths Across en-US America. en-US This year the Rolling en-US Thunder Motorcycle Club will en-US have a wreath placing ceremoen-US -en-US ny Dec. 15 at Volusia Memorien-US -en-US al Park and Pilgrims Rest in en-US Ormond Beach. Anyone can en-US be a part of this.en-US Rolling Thunder, a certified en-US non-profit, is asking for a $10 en-US donation to sponsor a wreath. en-US The wreaths will be put in en-US place and each deceased en-US veterans name will be called en-US aloud as it happens, followed en-US by a moment of silence to en-US thank them for their service. en-US Rolling Thunder Florida en-US Chapter 8 was chartered in en-US 2009 to support veterans and en-US their families and to educate en-US and inform the public of the en-US plight of 84,000 service men en-US and women who are still en-US missing or unaccounted for en-US from past wars. Rolling en-US Thunder works to demand the en-US recovery and identification of en-US those missing veterans and en-US supports all service people en-US past and present. The group en-US supports private search and en-US rescue agencies like Veterans en-US Initiative and legislative en-US measures like The Persian en-US Gulf POW/MIA Accountabilien-US -en-US ty Act. en-US Folks, this Veterans Day en-US take a pause to remember the en-US brave servicemen and women en-US who have fought for our right en-US to live in a free society. These en-US days it seems to be in style for en-US a portion of our population to en-US denigrate those who serve. en-US While that is despicable, it is en-US not new. During and after the en-US Vietnam War, returning en-US servicemen where taunted and en-US insulted just for wearing their en-US uniform. Most of those en-US military people were confused en-US by that action and many were en-US just like me in that although en-US they were not 100 percent in en-US favor of the war, they didnt en-US hesitate to do their duty once en-US called. en-US I wore my uniform in public en-US with pride, knowing I en-US represented my country en-US despite cries of baby killer en-US from the cowards who hid in en-US order to stay behind. War is en-US never popular, but it is en-US unfortunately a part of living en-US in a complicated world. en-US Those who gave their lives en-US for our nation deserve our en-US utmost respect. Lets all honor en-US them on Veterans Day and en-US chip in $10 for a wreath to be en-US placed on their graves. Visit en-US rollingthunderfl8.com/en/en-US donate or send donations to P. en-US O. Im not getting that from en-US some government report. Its en-US from personal experience with en-US friends who have great jobs en-US and their training came from en-US the U.S. military.en-US Of course, if the main skill en-US you learned was marksmanen-US -en-US ship, you probably won't find en-US much use for it except in deer en-US hunting. Gun shops might like en-US to have a man or woman who en-US can take apart and put back en-US together a rifle in seconds. en-US However, there are many en-US training programs available en-US that can put you on a career en-US track. Daytona State College en-US and Embry-Riddle Aeronautien-US -en-US cal University are both en-US consistently ranked as great en-US schools for veterans.en-US A good place to start is the en-US Volusia County Veterans en-US Services office. You can check en-US them out at volusia.org/en-US services/community-services/en-US veterans-services or call (386) en-US 254-4646. They mostly deal en-US with various claims, but also en-US can point a veteran in the en-US right direction.en-US There also are chain stores en-US and restaurants that give en-US veterans an advantage as en-US franchisees, either through en-US special financial help, training en-US or both. en-US There is one catch for all of en-US this, though. You have to ask en-US for it. No one is going to order en-US you to do it.en-US The transition to the private en-US sector can be frustrating. en-US There are a lot of people who en-US wont quite get a soldiers en-US regimentation. But its that en-US discipline and ability to en-US commit to the job at hand that en-US can give veterans a leg up in en-US the business world.en-US ***en-US The good folks at Taylor en-US Storage in New Smyrna Beach en-US pointed out I erred in a recent en-US column, but were nice enough en-US to give me the complete en-US details for some clarification. I en-US mistakenly wrote a California en-US investor had bought the en-US former auto dealership, now en-US storage facility, at 1300 N. en-US Dixie Freeway, New Smyrna en-US Beach, for $1.15 million. I was en-US only half right. The property en-US was split in two parcels and en-US the investor bought the auto en-US dealership part at 1300 N. en-US Dixie Freeway. The local en-US Taylor family bought the part en-US that was converted to a en-US self-storage facility at 1350 N. en-US Dixie Freeway. So, thanks, and en-US good luck to the Taylor family. en-US ***en-US A few construction starts to en-US mention this week. Construcen-US -en-US tion is starting on the first two en-US buildings of The Bellamy, a en-US student apartment complex in en-US the 600 block of Jimmy Ann en-US Drive in Daytona Beach. A Winter Park en-US firm has bought part of West en-US Volusia Towne Centre (the en-US Dollar Tree end) for $1 en-US million. The Lohman family en-US has sold its office property at en-US 725 W. A8 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USOen-USK, here are my last 14 en-US car-buying tips in this en-US three-part series. en-USNo. 14 -You should only en-US drive the new vehicle after en-US youve negotiated the deal. en-US Why? To drive the vehicle, the en-US salesperson will ask for your en-US drivers license and that will en-US give the dealership a lot of en-US information about you!en-US No. 13 -Know which en-US vehicle you want before you en-US step on the car lot. Do your en-US homework and check inventoen-US -en-US ries online. Spend more time en-US on the dealerships website en-US than on its lot. en-US No. 12 -Usually, several en-US dealerships, within an hours en-US drive, will have the vehicle you en-US want. If you feel you need a en-US test drive before negotiating, en-US go to a dealership further en-US away. Tell them you came en-US from out of town and youve en-US heard they offer great prices. en-US Youll come back only if they en-US make it worth the drive! en-US No. 11 -Typically, internet en-US offers arent any lower than en-US going to the dealership. en-US No. 10 -When you go en-US online, ignore those pesky en-US pop-up chats. The represenen-US -en-US tatives cant give you any real en-US information; their only en-US purpose is to get your email en-US address and phone number. en-US No. 9 -Do not discuss how en-US you will pay for the vehicle en-US until the deal price is en-US established. en-US No. 8 -Investigate your en-US financing options, beforeen-US -en-US hand. If you plan on financing en-US through the dealership, do not en-US negotiate the purchase price en-US in terms of monthly payen-US -en-US ments. $25 more a month may en-US not sound like a lot, but it en-US adds up to $1,500 on a en-US 60-month loan (not including en-US interest).en-US No. 7 -Be careful with en-US add-ons like extended en-US warranties, prepaid services, en-US etc., especially if you are en-US financing. Are you really en-US going to keep the vehicle that en-US long?en-US No. 6 -Download a en-US payment calculator to your en-US smartphone and figure out the en-US payments, yourself, based on en-US the dealerships best out-the-en-US door price.en-US No. 5 -When trading a en-US vehicle for a newer one, en-US understand there are two en-US transactions. Some dealers en-US want to talk about the deal en-US as one number. Negotiating en-US how much youll give them in en-US addition to your trade can en-US hide a poor trade-in value or en-US paying full price on the new en-US vehicle. Ask for the two en-US transactions to be kept en-US separate for your ease of en-US understanding.en-US No. 4 -If buying new, are en-US you willing to wait until next en-US years model comes out? The en-US dealer may be more motivated en-US to sell last years inventory.en-US No. 3 -Shop on a rainy day. en-US You might be the only en-US prospect on the lot. en-US No. 2 -Continue to look en-US until you find a deal that en-US works for you. You dont need en-US to comparison shop at every en-US dealership. en-US And, Tip No. 1 -If youre en-US serious about buying a car, en-US accelerate the process by en-US asking for the manager. Leave en-US if he/she isnt available or en-US wont come out to meet with en-US you face-to-face.en-US Thats all 25! If you have an en-US interesting car-buying story, en-US shoot me an email. Then, at the worst possible time, the senior or a member of their family must scramble to nd a new, safe place for the loved-one to live. The Internet is the last place they should go,What they need is boots on the ground in the community, someone whos familiar with local assisted living facilities, has visited and evaluated them, and can knowledgeably recommend them to our seniors, just as we would to our own parents. Rose emphasized that Assisted Living Made Simple doesnt take shortcuts with seniors seeking. Before they begin the search, they nd out what their client wants and needs. When we interview the senior family we consider everything, including the emotional, nancial, social, and medical needs. While cost is always a factor in choosing an assisted living facility, Rose pointed out many seniors are unaware of what benets they could qualify for, and the dierent nancial arrangements that could be made. The en-US creek averages 10 to 12 feet in en-US depth for most of its length, en-US which would lead you to think en-US it could be a good cold en-US weather trout spot, but I never en-US found it to be that. en-US In 1978, a vicious freeze hit en-US our area with day-time highs en-US only in the 20s. That was en-US enough to stun the snook and en-US many were killed. When the en-US temperatures plunged, en-US hundreds of snook and tarpon en-US rushed to Strickland to try en-US and survive in the warmer en-US depths there. It didnt work, en-US but Strickland became packed en-US with those two game fish. en-US My cousin Randy, who lived en-US in DeLand, called to say a en-US commercial fishermen friend en-US had told him he had gone en-US there and dipped up 2,500 en-US pounds of stunned snook. en-US Even in that cold weather, I en-US was on the water the very next en-US day. Randy, my father and I en-US netted more than 400 pounds en-US of snook that were swimming en-US slowly near the surface. en-US After that the state began to en-US issue warnings not to take fish en-US in that manner. They told us en-US the fish would survive, but we en-US knew they were dying. As en-US soon as the cold snap broke, I en-US went back out to Strickland en-US and found thousands of dead en-US snook and tarpon. These days en-US dipping up stunned fish is en-US strictly illegal. en-US As I drifted northward on en-US the creek, I had to smile as en-US each turn brought back a good en-US fishing memory. At a wide en-US spot in the stream, I rememen-US -en-US bered being there with a en-US friend from Chicago when we en-US found tarpon so thick we were en-US accidentally snagging them en-US through the dorsal fin with en-US our jigs. Wild fishing to be en-US sure. en-US As I moved along, I tried en-US each of my old honey holes en-US with no luck. In order to keep en-US with tradition, I was baiting en-US with dead shrimp that was en-US only appealing to small mango en-US snappers. I found some of the en-US downed trees I had fished in en-US the s were still there. Once en-US those trees had yielded coolers en-US full of drum, but no more. en-US When I did catch a small black en-US drum, I anchored up. In the en-US past, whenever I caught any en-US drum, it would mean a school en-US was waiting, but no more. I en-US did manage one under-sized en-US red fish.en-US Folks, Strickland Creek is a en-US great place to boat and en-US especially kayak. It is a en-US no-wake manatee zone for the en-US entire length. It also is a great en-US place to try a fly rod. On en-US occasion, you may see an en-US alligator, otters, roseate en-US spoonbill wading birds, osprey en-US and bald eagles. Some years en-US back, it was home to a big ole en-US rattlesnake we named El Cid. en-US It was not uncommon to see en-US that seven-footer swimming en-US across the creek. There is still en-US lots of fun to be had at en-US Strickland and it is all within en-US the Ormond Beach city limits. en-US Give it a try. You wont be en-US sorry.en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years. On en-US Veterans Day, some operaen-US -en-US tions offer free meals to en-US veterans from special menus en-US created to honor them. I love en-US my industry. en-US Now what do veterans eat en-US when they come home after en-US serving our country in a en-US foreign land? It seems they go en-US back to their roots and family. en-US Food they were raised on and en-US remember dearly. Wonderful en-US memories created by their en-US moms like fried chicken, or en-US meatloaf and mashed potaen-US -en-US toes. Almost every family has en-US a favorite meal that was made en-US at home. en-US There are lots of froofroo en-US foods out there you know en-US what I mean; red, white and en-US blue cookies or gelatin molds. en-US Lets feed our veterans the real en-US stuff. A special meal theyll en-US really love. Something they en-US deserve, something from their en-US childhood. Maybe a special en-US food that created a memory. en-US You need to make it special.en-US For some vets, the taste of en-US home is food they could not en-US get for a long time, only eating en-US military MRE or Meals Ready en-US to Eat. If you want to know what en-US our veterans have given to this en-US great country, spend a day at en-US that museum. It will remind en-US you of the great sacrifices our en-US veterans made. It will fill you en-US with the spirit of what en-US veterans gave to this great en-US country then and now in all en-US the conflicts since then, en-US strengthening whatever our en-US country faces in the future.en-US My father came from en-US Greece as a young boy of 16 en-US and traveled to Australia en-US where he joined the Austraen-US -en-US lian Mounted Infantry to fight en-US in WWI. After the war ended, en-US he immigrated to the United en-US States. When WWII broke en-US out, he tried to enlist in the en-US U.S. Army, but was told he en-US was too old. en-US I could always see the spirit en-US in his eyes as he read the en-US paper everyday about world en-US events, and he would always en-US say how lucky we were to live en-US in this country and how en-US precious freedom was, but en-US that it came at a price.
