en-USPublic Utilities director en-US gives street-light updateen-USLynn Stevens, public utilities director for the City en-US of Port Orange, gave an update on changing street en-US lights to the City Council at a special workshop on en-US Tuesday, Oct. 23.en-US In her presentation, Ms. Stevens stated that, as a en-US part of the citys green initiative, many of the citys en-US street lights will be changed from high pressure en-US sodium lights to LED lights. en-US The change is a joint venture between the city and en-US Florida Power & Light. FPL owns the lights, and the en-US city will pay FPL just under $305,000 for the power en-US consumption, maintenance, and any repairs en-US for the lights.en-US Ms. Stevens stated the reasons for the en-US change from high pressure sodium to LED, en-US includes the LED lights having a lower elecen-US -en-US trical cost as well as a smaller carbon footen-US -en-US print.en-US She also stated the transition will not affect Port en-US Orange residents. They wont see a change in what en-US the streetlights look like. But they will see a differen-US -en-US ence in the light that they get from the streetlights.en-US Ms. Stevens further discussed the benefits of LED en-US lights for Port Orange residents, stating, It will en-US increase energy savings by giving us a better and en-US stronen-US -en-US ger light in those en-US areas.en-US FPL estimates it will take eight months to comen-US -en-US plete the transition of the lights. However, this en-US change will only affect city streets, according to Ms. en-USLeading up to the Nov. 6 en-US election, Hometown News en-US offers these candidate proen-US -en-US files of county and municipal en-US candidates.en-US These posts are non-partien-US-en-US san, meaning anyone can en-US vote on them regardless of en-US their party affiliation.en-US The top vote-getter wins in en-US all of these elections. Some of en-US the races will be up for elecen-US-en-US tion for the first time since en-US there were only two candien-US -en-US dates to qualify. In Ormond en-US Beach, there are more than en-US two candidates in some en-US races, but the top vote-getter en-US still wins.en-US For more information en-US about voting, including a en-US sample ballot, call (386) 736-en-US 5930 or visit en-USvolusiaelections.en-US org.en-US Volusia County Council en-US District 3 candidatesen-US Deborah Denys, no age en-US given, the en-US incumen-US-en-US bent, is the en-US vice chair en-US of the en-US Volusia en-US County en-US Council. en-US She has en-US served on en-US the counen-US-en-US cil since en-US January en-US 2013.en-US She was a member of the en-USElection en-US Preview: County en-US and municipal en-US elections en-USBlack en-US Hawk en-US Inn en-US benefits en-US Spruce en-US Creeken-USThe Spruce Creek High en-US School Black Hawk Inn is en-US open for business. en-US Once a month for $7, the en-US public can feast on the en-US delights created by students en-US in the culinary program at en-US the Port Orange high school. en-US Originally created in 1985, en-US the Inn is now managed by en-US Mary Piper, who was recenten-US-en-US ly named by her peers as en-US Spruce Creek High School en-US 2019 Teacher of the Year. Ms. en-US Piper has worked at the en-US school 21 years with 27 years en-US total in the Volusia County en-US school district.en-US The program is through en-US ProStart, which is the nationen-US -en-US al restaurant association curen-US -en-US riculum. All the textbooks en-US come from them, Ms. Piper en-US said. We go to competitions en-US in the spring. Last year one of en-US our seniors got the only en-US scholarship in Volusia Counen-US-en-US ty from the Florida Restauen-US-en-US rant Association to go to en-US culinary school at Daytona en-US State College.en-US More than 250 schools in en-US the U.S. use the ProStart proen-US -en-US gram. Each cooking class en-US works in the Black Hawk en-US Inn, working the front of the en-US house, serving, cooking or en-US doing food prep. Upper level en-US classes create the menus. en-US It is training the kids for a en-US career in hospitality, and en-US hospitality is the number one en-US career in Volusia County, en-US Ms. Piper said.en-US Her husband, William en-US Bill Piper, is a retired chef. en-US The program is to teach en-US the kids basic culinary, Mr. en-US Piper said. A lot of them en-US have gone on to culinary en-US school that she has helped. A en-US lot of them go into different en-US restaurants here in the area en-US to work after they have en-US learned the basics here with en-US this program.en-US In her second year runen-US -en-US ning the restaurant her husen-US -en-US band thinks she has done a en-US terrific job. I think the quality is en-US excellent.en-US Ms. Piper teaches all the en-US basics, such as how to debone en-US chicken, cut meat opposite the en-US grain, chop celery, dice tomaen-US -en-US toes, and how to hold the en-US knives, Mr. Piper said. Not en-US only does it help them if they en-US want to continue in culinary, it en-US helps them in everyday life en-US when they get to their own en-US kitchen and want to prepare en-US food. en-US The October offering at the en-US inn included lemonade or en-US fresh-brewed tea, a sweet and en-US sour cucumber salad, warm en-US rolls and butter, Meatloaf Coren-US -en-US don Bleu with tomatoes on en-US top, honey-glazed carrots, en-US scalloped potatoes, and en-US Oreo-crusted chocolate chip en-US cheesecake cupcakes with en-US whipped cream and salted caren-US -en-US amel sauce, all made by stuen-US -en-US dents. I think they are very well en-US trained and the food is delien-US -en-US cious and wonderful. We came en-US last year and last month. en-US They will be back again, Mr. en-US Betancourt added.en-US Pam Conner, secretary for en-US the 10th, 11th and 12th grade en-US deans, said, I always eat here en-US because the food is delicious. en-US You cant get a better meal en-US really. When she presents it, it en-US is always nice and fancy. The en-US kids seem to absolutely love it. en-US Its good for them.en-US Zachary Panciello, 17, a en-US senior, entered the culinary en-US program as a sophomore. He en-US plans on making culinary a en-US career and is busy applying at en-US colleges. He said growing up en-US he was introduced to different en-US cultures and food and began en-US cooking. en-US Cooking for myself, I en-US developed a really high pasen-US-en-US sion for it, Zachary said. en-US What we do here is almost en-US like an actual commercial en-US restaurant. We are running a en-US food line, we are running serven-US -en-US ers, we are running everyen-US -en-US thing. We prepare throughout en-US the week and get everything en-US prepared for the actual day en-US pretty much like a restaurant en-US does.en-US Its a serious business for en-US him, he said. I am trying to en-US get grants to go to college and en-US go to culinary school. I really en-US want to be a head chef someen-US -en-US where and make a career and en-US life out of what I love to do. It en-US cant get any better than what en-US you love to do, to do as a job.en-US The culinary program is an en-US elective open to all Spruce en-US Creek students, who can stay en-US in it one year or four years. en-US There are minimal lab fees.en-US Besides hands-on, practical en-US applications, students learn en-US about aesthetics, how to deal en-US with irate customers, manageen-US-en-US ment, practical math applicaen-US-en-US tions and best server practices. en-US As to the actual food prepaen-US -en-US ration, students decide among en-US themselves who is going to do en-US which job, and then they en-US rotate.en-US Cash donations for program en-US supplies are appreciated. Resen-US -en-US ervations for the Black Hawk en-US Inn are accepted up until the en-US day before the meal. en-US For a resen-US-en-US ervation or donation, call (386) en-US 322-6272 and ask for the culien-US -en-US nary department or email Ms. en-US Piper aten-US mtpiper@volusia.k12.en-US fl.us. (formerly SIEMENS) en-UStantly the success of our stuen-US -en-US dents, depends upon a decien-US-en-US sion made by (the board).en-US Board members did not en-US comment, other than to conen-US -en-US gratulate Ms. Albert on her en-US new position as president of en-US Volusia United Educators, the en-US group that, five days prior to en-US the board meeting, called for en-US the board to terminate Mr. en-US Russell. The union cited teachen-US-en-US er vacancies, declaring an en-US impasse at one point in the en-US slow contract negotiations this en-US year, and low school grades of en-US C or below at most of the disen-US -en-US tricts elementary schools as en-US reasons for a change in leaderen-US -en-US ship. en-US Following action items and en-US presentations throughout the en-US meeting, which included the en-US boards passage of the new colen-US -en-US lective bargaining agreement, en-US Board Member Ida Wright en-US broached the subject of Mr. en-US Russells contract and possible en-US extension.en-US With Board Members Carl en-US Persis and John Hill dissenten-US -en-US ing, Ms. Wright, Melody Johnen-US -en-US son and Board Chair Linda en-US Cuthbert defended Mr. Russell en-US and ultimately voted to add a en-US year to his contract.en-US It is only a one-year extenen-US-en-US sion to give us time, Ms. en-US Cuthbert said. Lets give it a en-US chance for our district to work en-US in harmony with our unions. en-US Lets give it time for us to find en-US what we really want, especially en-US with one or two new board en-US members coming in (after the en-US election).en-US Mr. Persis resisted the idea, en-US saying the new board memen-US -en-US bers wouldnt need a year to en-US decide what they might want en-US to do in regards to Mr. Rusen-US -en-US sells contract, but Ms. Johnson en-US disagreed, saying what the disen-US-en-US trict needs right now is stabilien-US -en-US ty.en-US I have principals that are en-US nervous they want to know en-US are we going to let someone en-US else dictate who we hire and en-US fire, or are we going to make en-US the decision for the taxpayer? en-US Ms. Johnson said. When we en-US get into these discussions, en-US everybody is listening. It does en-US take time. I feel like were this en-US close from a breakthrough. We en-US need stability.en-US The district should focus on en-US the positives, and give Mr. en-US Russell time to work on coren-US -en-US recting the negatives, Ms. en-US Cuthbert said.en-US I would like to give him the en-US chance, just like we would give en-US a teacher who slips we dont en-US just toss them out, we work en-US with them, we improve them, en-US Ms. Cuthbert said. Its only a en-US one-year extension to give a en-US person a little time to turn en-US things around. We dont know en-US what our graduation rate will en-US be this year. We dont know en-US what our school grade will be en-US this year. I also want time for en-US our new leadership with our en-US unions to work with this.en-US The extension, once put to a en-US vote, passed 3-2, with Ms. en-US Wright, Ms. Cuthbert and Ms. en-US Johnson voting in favor and en-US Mr. Hill and Mr. Persis voting en-US against.en-USTen-UShese days there is a en-US multitude of angry en-US Americans. en-USNo, wait, angry is too en-US benign a word. Incensed, en-US outraged or infuriated would en-US be more accurate. We see it on en-US the news almost every day. en-US People attacking the police or en-US politicians they dont agree en-US with. en-US It reached a crescendo with en-US Justice Brett Kavanaughs en-US nomination and appointment en-US to the Supreme Court. A en-US portion of the population was en-US enraged and seemingly out of en-US control. We all saw the en-US pictures of women (ladies?) en-US clawing at the doors of the en-US highest court in the land. To en-US me that looked like a scene en-US from a third world country en-US and not from the shining en-US example of democracy that is en-USour United States. en-US Just recently I saw a film of en-US demonstrators throwing rocks en-US and bottles at the police while en-US an American flag burned in en-US the background. There has en-US been repeated scenes of our en-US elected officials being en-US harassed as they attempt to en-US have dinner with their en-US families. It seems all decorum en-US is lost and no one is offering en-US any solutions. The right en-US complains about the lawlessen-US -en-US ness, but does little to combat en-US it while the left seems intent en-US on pretending it is not en-US happening at all. I suppose it en-US has to fall to me to be the en-US problem solver. en-US To that end I have but one en-US word for you: DONUTS! Not en-US just any donuts, I am talking en-US about warm, greasy, sugary, en-US glazed Krispy Kreme donuts. en-US If the security at the Supreme en-US Court had ordered 10 or 12 en-US dozen hot Krispy Kremes and en-US had them distributed to the en-US protestors who had gathered en-US outside, much of the violence en-US may have been quelled. en-US Look, I dont mean to en-US diminish the reasons for the en-US public demonstrations. I en-US understand Justice Kavanaugh en-US was put on the Supreme Court en-US despite accusations of abuse en-US against women. A noble cause en-US for protestors to be sure. Im en-US only saying it is hard to stay en-US angry while eating donuts. en-US Do you think those women en-US clawing at the doors would en-US not have taken a time out en-US when the Krispy Kremes en-US arrived? Heck, no matter what en-US I am doing, the odor of a en-US dozen warm donuts will stop en-US me in my tracks every time. I en-US am betting few could resist.en-US The uniformed thugs of en-US Antifa look and act mean, but en-US I think even they would have en-US to pause for a couple donuts. It en-US is almost impossible to eat hot en-US donuts without smiling. en-US Donuts will calm the savage en-US beasts. en-US For that matter, I believe en-US our international representaen-US -en-US tives should consider introen-US -en-US ducing donut diplomacy to en-US our enemies in places like Iran en-US and North Korea. I dont see en-US Kim Jong Un turning down a en-US box of Krispy Kremes. I know en-US if I had to deal with a foreign en-US dictator, I would prefer to do it en-US over a dozen donuts. en-US You know as well as I, you en-US cannot eat glazed donuts en-US without licking your fingers. en-US If President Trump could get en-US President Putin licking his en-US fingers, he would be on a path en-US to a successful negotiation. en-US I challenge you to try it. If en-US there is soen-US meone who is a en-US thorn in your side, casually en-US pass around a box of donuts. en-US A truce will have to ensue if en-US only temporarily. en-US Look, I know our country is en-US more divided than I can ever en-US remember, and the problems en-US we face are diverse and en-US difficult to solve. We need en-US some common ground and en-US Im saying that common en-US ground is spelled D-O-N-U-en-US T-S or is it doughnuts? Oh no en-US is that one more thing we cant en-US agree on? en-US Dan Smith is on the board of en-US directors for the Ormond Beach en-US Historical Society and The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association and is the author en-US of two books, The Worlds en-US Greatest Beach and I Swear en-US the Snook Drowneen-US d. Keep your guard up. en-US In fact, if you want to have a en-US little fun, turn the tables and en-US ask the salesperson off-the-en-US wall questions! en-US No. 19 -Even if youre told en-US youre getting the dealerships en-US best price, salespeople rarely en-US start with the lowest price for en-US the new automobile and en-US highest value for your trade.en-US A true story: Not long ago, I en-US traded in an older vehicle for a en-US newer one. I asked the en-US salesperson to give me the en-US dealerships lowest price en-US without going back and forth en-US to his manager 10 times. He en-US said they wanted my trade and en-US $15,000. I asked for the en-US manager and pressed him for en-US a lower price. A few times I en-US asked, What is the price that, en-US if I gave you one dollar less, en-US you would let me walk out the en-US door? That produced two en-US more lowest prices. When all en-US was said and done, the final en-US number was $9,000! I saved en-US $6,000 because I kept asking if en-US they would take less. I was en-US willing to walk out (and they en-US knew it). en-US No. 18 -The buyers most en-US powerful tool is his/her feet en-US (see the story above). If you en-US never walked out of a dealeren-US -en-US ship in the middle of a en-US transaction, maybe you didnt en-US try hard enough!en-US No. 17 -Do not drive the en-US new car, and do not discuss en-US the transaction, until you have en-US the key to your trade-in en-US vehicle back (from being en-US appraised) and you know en-US where its parked. You need to en-US be able to leave at any time. en-US No. 16 -If youve reached a en-US deal, but then they come en-US back to say there was a en-US mistake (or give another reaen-US -en-US son for a cost increase), walk en-US out. This might be hard to do en-US since youve already invested en-US so much time and energy. But en-US do it! More than once, the en-US mistake was magically en-US rectified when I told them, en-US Well, then we are done here en-US and stood up to leave.en-US No. 15 -If you get any en-US indication the dealership has en-US questionable practices, walk en-US out. en-US Example: While shopping en-US for my teenage sons first en-US vehicle, we were discussing a en-US used truck with the salesperen-US -en-US son. A manager strolled over en-US and said he would reduce the en-US price just for us. As it turns en-US out, his lower price was en-US already painted on the en-US windshield of the truck! We en-US got up and left.en-US You, too, could encounter a en-US shady dealership, but dont en-US lose heart, there are honest, en-US reputable ones out there!en-US Could there possibly be en-US more tips? Yes! We step on the en-US gas with 14 next week!en-US David D. A16 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USJen-USust ask an old Florida en-US cracker. We dont have en-US crappie here only specks. en-USIn Louisiana, where I came en-US from, our crappie were en-US sac-a-lait. No matter the en-US name, there is no finer eating en-US or better fun than our states en-US speckled perch. en-US When I was a kid fishing en-US the great Atchafalaya Swamp en-US in Louisiana, sac-a-lait were en-US not high on my list. My target en-US was largemouth bass or those en-US great more mouth the Cajuns en-US called goggle eye. Those were en-US both large and plentiful and, en-US whenever I did catch crappie, en-US they were small. en-US In 1968, I found myself on en-US the shores of Lake en-US Okeechobee in south central en-US Florida. Everyplace I went en-US bore some variation of the en-US name speckled perch. There en-US was a speckled perch lounge, en-US bowling alley and diner to en-US name a few. I didnt know en-US what a speckled perch was, en-US but I was intrigued. en-US Once I found out that was en-US the local name for crappie en-US (sac-a-lait), I was less than en-US impressed. That is until I saw en-US the size of the perch that were en-US coming from that big inland en-US sea. My, oh My! Stringers of en-US fat specks all weighing nearly en-US two pounds were the rule. en-US Back then the Okeechobee en-US bait of choice was minnows, en-US just like it is in Louisiana, but I en-US soon learned the better en-US catches came from using grass en-US shrimp. Once I got into it, I en-US was thrilled. en-US Our local speck season is en-US just kicking off. Every year en-US when the weather finally en-US cools, they leave the shade of en-US the lily pads and head for the en-US center of the lakes to spawn. en-US In the 1980s, I was introduced en-US to that phenomenon by my en-US neighbor Walter Anderson. en-US He and I would troll the center en-US of most of the lakes that are en-US formed by the St. Johns River. en-US We always brought home en-US delicious strings of perch. If en-US you have not sat down to a en-US dinner of specks, know that en-US they are the best tasting fish in en-US Florida, bar none. en-US The fun of catching them in en-US open water happens when you en-US have two fishermen trolling en-US six lines and three of them en-US have fish on. We used tiny jigs en-US on 1/64 oz. lead heads and en-US added weight to the lines with en-US split shot when needed. Hal en-US Flies or Beetle spins were the en-US preferred lures and we had en-US them in all colors. en-US My all time favorite place en-US for specks is Lake Woodruff. en-US That beautiful lake may be en-US accessed from Tedders Fish en-US camp directly behind DeLeon en-US Springs State Park or by en-US launching at Highland Park en-US Fish Camp. Crescent and en-US Dead Lakes a little further en-US north also provide great speck en-US fishing. Both lakes have a en-US suitable launch site. en-US Once Walter and I were en-US fishing in Crescent Lake when en-US the speckled perch were so en-US thick, you could dip them up en-US with a net. Back then the limit en-US was 50 per person (now 25) en-US and we had our 100-fish limit en-US in an hour. Of course, that was en-US one of those you had to be en-US there deals, but thats what en-US makes fishing fun. en-US Still farther north is big en-US Lake George and the speck en-US fishing there is mighty fine. en-US Going south to Sanford, Lake en-US Monroe is another place en-US where we scored heavily. That en-US lake is the only one I know of en-US where the state has a 12-inch en-US minimum in place, but that en-US wont bother you. I dont en-US remember ever having to en-US release any fish there because en-US they were too small. Put in en-US just west of the I-4 bridge and en-US motor east. Good fishing there en-US and in Lake Jessup farther en-US east. en-US Folks, the state record for en-US specks is right at 4 pounds and en-US I know I have eaten some that en-US would have been records up en-US north. Fish over two pounds is en-US not unusual at all. See the en-US good folks at Williams en-US Southeast Tackle on Nova en-US Road in Holly Hill for all your en-US speck needs and information. en-US This is easy fishing and great en-US fun and the eats are delicious. en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years.
