Dorothy Hukill en-USleaves a local legacyen-USAccolades keep pouring in for Dorothy Hukill, a en-US Port Orange resident and District 14 Florida Senaen-US -en-US tor. en-US Sen. Hukill, who died Oct. 2, is being remembered en-US as a true servant and leader for the people of Florida. en-US Her son, Jonathan Hukill, a public relations conen-US -en-US sultant in Washington, D.C. gave a poignant tribute en-US to his mother. en-US In addition to being her son, I was also her camen-US-en-US paign manager on several of her races. Going back en-US to 1992 when she first ran for Ponce Inlet Town en-US Council, I have some very good memories of going en-US around in a T-shirt that said Vote for My en-US Mom and going door to door in Ponce Inlet. en-US Apparently, it worked because she got electen-US-en-US ed. en-US Ive had a really interesting perspective as en-US a son and as someone that got to tell her en-US what to do a lot of the time as her campaign en-US staffer, Mr. Hukill said. en-US Part of her legacy was her caring attitude, much en-US more than youd expect from a public office, he said. en-US Serving people was in her bones. She really just en-US thought about how she could help people and she en-US took a lot of her cues from people as well. She en-US focused on things she heard in the community to en-US help people.en-US She en-US always had a special en-US place for veterans, especially since she was en-US a en-US member VFW Post 3282 in Port Orange.en-US Mr. Hukill added that when she was a senator she en-US was responsible for representing almost half a milen-US -en-US lion people. en-USThe Port Orange City en-US Council Oct. 2 approved the en-US annexation of 15.3 acres of en-US land at its regular meeting.en-US The land is at 1727 to 1737 en-US Fern Park Drives, in uninen-US -en-US corporated Volusia County, en-US on the south side of Taylor en-US Road across from the Crane en-US Lakes manufactured home en-US community.en-US An 84-unit townhouse en-US development is planned for en-US the land, according to a city en-US document.en-US However, a citizen raised a en-US concern at the meeting by en-US saying the land could possien-US -en-US bly be a conservation area, en-US and there should be a study en-US done to see how much of the en-US area is wetlands.en-US City documents addressed en-US some concerns over annexen-US -en-US ation, including potable en-US water, solid waste, stormwaen-US -en-US ter management, and transen-US -en-US portation.en-US City staff were asked to en-US also consider the future proen-US-en-US posal in their analysis and en-US provide feedback of any posen-US -en-US sible service issues with en-US development of an 84-unit en-US townhouse development on en-US 15.3-acres, the document en-US states.en-US Nevertheless, according to en-US city documents, Based on en-US the findings of this report, en-US staff recommends approval en-US of the request to annex en-US approximately 15.3 acres of en-US property, located at 1727 and en-US 1737 Fern Park Drive into en-US the City of Port Orange.en-US The council voted unanien-US -en-US mously for annexation, but it en-US is unknown when the townen-US -en-US house development will en-US begin construction.en-USCity Council en-US annexes land en-US for townhouses en-USFPL en-US starts en-US building en-US solar en-US farmen-USA 330,000-panel Florida en-US Power & Light solar farm en-US under construction on the en-US south side of State Road 44 en-US near Samsula will double as a en-US protected native plant and en-US wildlife preserve under the en-US auspices of Audubon Florida.en-US On a former sod farm en-US property visible from the en-US busy state highway, the en-US 1,200-acre Pioneer Trail en-US Solar Energy Center also will en-US serve as a wildlife habitat for en-US birds, butterflies, bees and en-US other plant pollinators. en-US The 74.5-megawatt clean en-US energy plant is one of four en-US new FPL solar energy centers en-US under construction in Florien-US-en-US da, and will increase the en-US number owned by the en-US nations third-largest power en-US company to 18. It en-US is packed (that day). We are en-US fairly small. Its hard to get that en-US many people through. We had en-US people waiting in line for more en-US than an hour.en-US Tickets are available aten-US ticken-US -en-US en-US or at the door.en-USHen-USave you seen about en-US enough of these TV en-US commercials about en-US products that are supposed to en-US increase male testosterone? en-USYou know the type. First en-US they show virile-looking men en-US doing all sorts of macho en-US things like chopping wood in en-US flannel shirts or shooting en-US automatic weapons. One even en-US has a fellow driving a military en-US track vehicle. The idea is that en-US if you take their pills, you en-US could be doing those manly en-US things. en-US Most of the time the en-US commercial ends with some en-US guy walking on the beach with en-US a great looking lady who is en-US obviously way out of his en-US league. At least until he took en-US the pills. en-US If you havent seen these en-US ads, you are probably not the en-US insomniac I am. Take my en-US word for it, at 4 a.m. you en-US cannot escape them. The part en-US I like is they usually offer the en-US product free. Apparently they en-US are satisfied to get the inflated en-US shipping and handling fees en-US they charge. That allows them en-US to offer the pills free. en-US But hold on, if you want to en-US get in on this deal, you will en-US have to text them a code word. en-US Usually that is something like en-USgent or dude, but I saw one en-US recently that wanted the men en-US to text the word wimp. en-US Thats what you want, a male en-US libido enhancement product en-US that insults you from the get en-US go.en-US You know all of this began en-US in the 1980s. Back then the en-US nation was in the throes of the en-US AIDS epidemic. That sent the en-US scientists to work searching en-US for a cure. Obviously they en-US must have been older men for en-US what they came up with was en-US Viagra. Nothing for AIDS, but en-US a great product for under en-US performing males. en-US Actually most of the TV ads en-US aimed at men are ridiculous. en-US These days there are ads for en-US flashlights that seem to be a en-US big part of male virility. The en-US spokesman insists on telling en-US you his name and it is always en-US something cool and strong en-US sounding like Hunter or en-US Parish. I dont really care who en-US the guy is in the flashlight en-US commercial or any commeren-US -en-US cial for that matter. I dont like en-US it that I have to know the en-US fellows name in the Flex-Seal en-US pitch. en-US Of course, the one constant en-US in ads geared to males is the en-US pretty women. I dont mind en-US that, though. Deep down we en-US all know the chances of us en-US scoring a great looking lady en-US because we drink a certain en-US beer are slim, but we dont en-US mind playing along. Most of en-US the time we cant remember en-US the name of the product in en-US those ads, only the girls. en-US Yep, Madison Avenue has us en-US nailed. We will watch a pretty en-US woman every time. I prefer to en-US see them on the news or doing en-US the weather. I know the TV en-US networks are treating me like en-US an imbecile, but Im okay with en-US that, too. en-US Ironicen-US ally it seems the en-US products for ladies also have en-US pretty women in their ads. en-US Thats good, for if I have to en-US look at ads for mascara or hair en-US remover, it may as well be en-US pleasant. Actually I like all en-US women and can find someen-US -en-US thing nice about most of them. en-US There is an ad for a male en-US enhancement pill that stars en-US former Major League ball en-US player Franen-US k Thomas. In it a en-US cute housewife-type hopes the en-US pills will turn her own man en-US into a 6-foot, 4-inch stack of en-US muscle like Thomas. The law also en-US increases the chances of en-US offenders receiving a sentence en-US that includes jail time. en-US Ponces Law increased the en-US severity ranking of an animal en-US abuse-related crime. For en-US example, before Ponces Law, en-US an offender would have scored en-US a Level 3 offense, which carries en-US 16 points. After the law, that en-US same offense is a Level 5 with en-US 28 points, meaning if a person en-US is convicted on an animal cruen-US -en-US elty charge, they are more likeen-US -en-US ly to do jail time. en-US Supporters of the law gathen-US -en-US ered outside the James Foxen-US-en-US man Justice Center Oct. 1 to en-US celebrate its enactment.en-US State Rep. Tom Leek, who en-US sponsored the bill, addressed en-US the crowd. You all made this en-US happen. This is precisely how en-US your government should en-US work. Today is a beautiful day, en-US State. Rep. Leek said. en-US State Rep. Paul Renner, who en-US co-sponsored the bill, said en-US This story is a lesson about en-US what we can do when we all en-US come together. Only about one en-US bill in 10 (submitted each en-US year) actually gets to the finish en-US line. Everybody in the comen-US -en-US munity made this happen, to en-US turn tragedy into what is today en-US not a law just in our communien-US -en-US ty, but a law in the State of en-US Florida. Out of 3,250 bills en-US in the 2018 session, only 195 en-US passed and Ponces Law was en-US one of them. en-US Sheriff Mike Chitwood, one en-US of the many rally speakers, en-US said, You hear about governen-US-en-US ment inaction all the time; this en-US was government in action. en-US From a law enforcement peren-US -en-US spective, if history has taught en-US us anything, if you abuse anien-US -en-US mals and kill animals, you are en-US just as likely to be a serial en-US domestic abuser or a serial en-US killer.en-US All of us have the responsien-US -en-US bility to protect those in socien-US -en-US ety that cannot protect themen-US -en-US selves, the sheriff said. With en-US its nearly 30 shops stretching en-US out to all four corners of the en-US county, its extremely conveen-US -en-US nience, inexpensive and en-US dependable.en-US It looked like Firehouse en-US Subs might come into the en-US market to try to be the top en-US alternative, but after a couple en-US of failed shops, Firehouse en-US stands at five shops and hasnt en-US added one in a while. Larrys en-US Giant Subs is still popular, but en-US is now down to two shops. en-US Quiznos also came in strong, en-US but quickly fizzled and en-US disappeared. Jersey Mikes also en-US has staked a claim and now en-US has four shops. en-US But Jimmy Johns, which en-US offers drive-through service en-US and delivery, has been en-US growing quickly and now has en-US seven shops countywide and is en-US about to aen-US dd its eighth on the en-US beachside in Daytona Beach. en-US Like Subway, the chain has a en-US strong local franchisee with en-US the Siebel family. So, the en-US beachside shop could really en-US push it forward. Demolition en-US has started on the buildings in en-US the 300 block of North en-US Atlantic Avenue and it en-US apparently doesnt take long to en-US build one of Jimmy Johns en-US shops.en-US Of course, anything written en-US about sub sandwiches in this en-US area must note that a lot of en-US people swear en-US by Publixs subs. en-US Also, Manzanos, which is en-US more of a traditional deli, is en-US another favorite on the en-US beachside in New Smyrna en-US Beach. A8 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores Debra Simms offers unique, local law practice en-USHow often does a law pracen-US -en-US tice offer free monthly groups? en-US Debra G. Simms, a Port en-US Orange elder law attorney, en-US besides practicing law, is offeren-US -en-US ing ongoing free monthly en-US non-denominational grief en-US groups for the community.en-US One group is full, but anothen-US -en-US er one is starting for those that en-US have recently lost someone. en-US Although predominantly en-US designed for spousal loss, anyen-US-en-US one suffering a loss, such as en-US losing a child, can come. The en-US new group, which will be run en-US by VITAS Healthcare on the en-US last Wednesday of the month, en-US is free and will center around a en-US brown bag lunch.en-US Ms. Simms started the en-US groups based on her own emoen-US-en-US tions with losing her mother, en-US and seeing a need for grief/en-US bereavement groups that are en-US non-denominational.en-US She is board certified by the en-US Florida Bar in elder law, which en-US includes estate planning, such en-US as wills, trusts, durable powers en-US of attorney, and advanced en-US medical directives. She also en-US does probate work, mediation en-US and guardianships. She en-US stressed documents created en-US are not just for seniors. She en-US emphasized there are not that en-US many board-certified elder en-US law attorneys in Florida, which en-US involves continual re-certificaen-US-en-US tion and keeping up with conen-US -en-US tinuing education credits in en-US the elder law area. en-US Ms. Simms, who has been en-US practicing law since 1988, said, en-US I love the Port Orange/New en-US Smyrna Beach area. Every day en-US that I come here, there is at en-US least one client, if not more, en-US that I take their story home en-US with me, and I feel really blessen-US -en-US ed that I was able to give them en-US something.en-US She said she would like to en-US see more young people plan en-US for the future and have guarden-US -en-US ians for their children. She en-US further stated people should en-US plan better for incapacity and en-US think about setting up trusts en-US for their children. No one en-US knows when our day is comen-US-en-US ing, but we know our day is en-US coming, for sure, she said.en-US Ms. Simms, who also has a en-US masters degree in social work, en-US was a counselor before becomen-US -en-US ing an attorney, working with en-US people with family issues. She en-US said as she gives legal advice, en-US sometimes she can cross over en-US into helping clients better en-US understand their situation en-US from another angle as she is en-US familiar with family dynamics. en-US I feel that my experience as en-US a clinical social worker is preten-US-en-US ty useful in this field, she said. en-US I feel like I can cut through en-US the issues pretty quickly and en-US give them the advice they en-US need. Even if they dont know en-US the questions to ask, I know en-US what they need to know. I try en-US to educate as well as give legal en-US advice. en-US Ms. Simms enjoys teaching en-US and presents different semien-US-en-US nars throughout the year, curen-US -en-US rently focusing on living trust en-US seminars to help people en-US understand their options and en-US the vehicles and tools they can en-US utilize to avoid the probate en-US process. en-US Another unique part of Ms. en-US Simms practice is her dog en-US Simba, a shih tzu who is her en-US constant companion. She said en-US clients love him. She also is the en-US proud mother of four adult en-US daughters and three granden-US-en-US sons.en-US Her practice is in Unit C at en-US 823 Dunlawton Ave. in Port en-US Orange. en-US For information, call en-US (386) 256-4882 or visit en-US en-USDebra G. Simmsen-USBy Diane M. en-USPen-USeople can, and do, meet, en-US fall in love and get en-US married despite substanen-US -en-US tial age differences. en-USRelationships like these are en-US often called May-December en-US romances. How does this en-US disparity in ages affect a en-US couples finances in retireen-US -en-US ment? Keep these two points en-US in mind: en-US Social Security. Many times, en-US couples (regardless of age) en-US choose to defer one spouses en-US Social Security payments for en-US as long as possible. This is en-US because, if filing is delayed, SS en-US benefits will increase until age en-US 70. Another reason is, when en-US the husband/wife who has en-US deferred payments passes en-US away, his/her spouse will be en-US entitled to that persons larger en-US benefit payment at full en-US retirement (the couple must en-US have been married for nine en-US months). If you are part of a en-US May-December couple, you en-US can see why this could be an en-US important planning option. en-US Lets look at a fictitious en-US example:en-US Jon is 64 and employed in a en-US middle management position. en-US He decided not to take an en-US early retirement at age 62. en-US Jons wife of three years, en-US Marie, is 48 and does not en-US work; she has held a few en-US short-term jobs over her en-US lifetime, but was unemployed en-US for many years while caring en-US for her disabled mother. If Jon en-US either continues to work, or en-US has other income to sustain en-US his and Maries lifestyle en-US through age 70, not only will en-US his benefit increase, but, en-US subsequently, Marie would get en-US a much larger survivors en-US benefit, should Jon pass away en-US at, lets say, age 74. If Marie en-US expects her Social Security en-US payment to be low because of en-US her sporadic work history, en-US taking the SS survivor benefit, en-US instead, could make a huge en-US difference as she moves en-US forward on her own.en-US Pensions. Now, one more en-US thing to keep in mind for this en-US May-December couple. If Jon en-US were eligible for a pension en-US through his employer, he en-US could choose to designate his en-US plan to be single life or en-US joint life. en-US If Jon were to choose single en-US life, he would receive pension en-US benefits until he died, but en-US Marie would not receive the en-US pension after his death. en-US Without proper survivorship en-US planning for Marie, she could en-US be left in the lurch with very en-US little income as she enters into en-US her golden years. en-US On the other hand, if Jon en-US were to designate his pension en-US plan to be joint life, payen-US -en-US ments would continue for en-US Marie, even after Jon passed en-US away. A drawback to joint life, en-US however, is monthly payen-US -en-US ments will be lower because en-US the pension is extended for en-US both Jon and Maries lifetimes. en-US Also, because of Maries en-US younger age, payments would, en-US typically, be reduced even en-US more.en-US Death is not a topic anyone en-US likes to talk about. And, en-US planning for retirement can en-US be complicated even more en-US so for May-December en-US couples. But, if you keep this en-US information in mind when en-US considering the future of a en-US surviving husband or wife, en-US you will not only PlanStronen-US -en-US ger for yourself, but for your en-US spouse, as well.en-US David D. A12 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USWen-UShen Capt. Brad en-US Kayholm called to en-US say the big reds en-US were in Ponce Inlet, he en-US immediately had my attention. en-US You may remember that in en-US the last few years Brad and his en-US Wham Bam Charters were en-US able to put me on trophy red en-US drum on two separate en-US occasions. Each time I had en-US managed a personal best, so en-US when Capt. Brad says big reds en-US I know he means B-I-G. en-US At the Kennedy Park boat en-US ramps in Edgewater, I joined en-US Brad and his dad, Rick, for a en-US nighttime fishing trip. I was en-US especially happy to have Rick en-US along since I know he has en-US been battling some serious en-US health issues as of late. The en-US three of us have enjoyed some en-US great trips in the past and I en-US wanted that fun to continue.en-US Our impressive ride was en-US Wham Bams new 21-foot en-US Carolina Skiff. That boat is en-US equipped with power pole, en-US remote control trolling motor en-US and top of the line fish finder. en-US First we made a couple stops en-US in the Indian River with no en-US luck before powering up to en-US head to Ponce. en-US We were using stout en-US equipment, tipped with big en-US 5/0 and 7/0 circle hooks baited en-US with live blue crabs. The tide en-US was going out, but the trolling en-US motor held our position en-US steady. Within minutes I was en-US on with a big lunker that gave en-US me quite a battle before the en-US hook pulled free. I never saw en-US that fish but was sure it was a en-US bull red.en-US Once I had re-baited, the en-US wait for another hookup was en-US short and this time I landed a en-US 45-inch red that must have en-US weighed nearly 30 pounds. en-US What a fish and what a fight! en-US It was so heavy that as I lifted en-US it, I had a difficult time en-US summoning up a smile for the en-US camera. My arms were still en-US quaking as we released it to en-US fight another day. en-US Next, Rick landed a twin to en-US the one I had caught as Capt. en-US Brad stayed busy re-baiting en-US and releasing our fish. After en-US some time, the nearby boats en-US began to notice our success en-US and drew ever closer. No en-US matter, I would end up en-US landing five fish all over 40 en-US inches in length and together en-US we put nine in the boat. The en-US other captains could not en-US match Brads expertise. en-US After we ran out of crab bait en-US we went to croakers and did en-US just as well. After that fifth en-US one, I must admit I had just en-US about had it and took a beer to en-US retreat to the far end of the en-US boat, as far from the rods as en-US possible. Five monsters on a en-US single trip would be a new en-US record for me and my tired en-US old body told me that was en-US plenty. en-US Folks this was a fishing trip en-US of a lifetime. I have been en-US catching red drum for nearly en-US 60 years and this was my best en-US trip ever. With Christmas en-US coming up, now would be a en-US great time to book your en-US favorite angler a trip with en-US Wham Bam Charters. Call en-US Capt. Brad at (386) 314-8553 en-US and set up your own advenen-US -en-US ture. en-US You know each time we fish en-US together I go home with a en-US great memory. I cant imagine en-US how he will top this on our en-US next trip but I know somehow en-US he will. If you are like many I en-US speak with and believe area en-US fishing is depleted, get with en-US Brad and find out the truth. en-US So many fish, so little time!en-USDan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years. B-4 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shoresen-USCen-USheese is one of my en-US favorite foods along with en-US eggs. en-USNow thats a great combinaen-US -en-US tion. The American Cheese en-US Society celebrates Cheese en-US Month in October. Not me, I en-US celebrated it all the time by en-US eating it! en-US Cheese has been with us for en-US 8,000 years, right about the en-US time sheep were first domestien-US -en-US cated. Milk from sheep would en-US be transported in skins made en-US from the sheeps stomach. en-US During this process the milk en-US turn to curd and cheese was en-US born. en-US Get ready to do a lot of en-US tasting. Since that time more en-US than 750 varieties of cheese en-US exists. I want to try them all. en-US Lets go to France where they en-US make more than 450 varieties. en-US Better yet, travel to Cheshire, en-US Britain, to the 119en-US then-US annual en-US International Cheese Awards. en-US This year there were 5,000 en-US cheeses entered. If I go, I may en-US never come back. en-US All kidding aside, I do love en-US cheese. I think most people en-US do. In the U.S., 25 percent of en-US all the cheese is made in en-US Wisconsin with the rest en-US coming from California, New en-US York, Idaho and, guess what, en-US Florida! Yes, we have many en-US dairy farms here and some are en-US producing cheese; a type of en-US Parmesan. You need a lot of en-US dairy farms to produce cheese, en-US because it take 10 pounds of en-US milk for every pound of en-US cheese produced. en-US I know some of you reading en-US this are saying I am lactose en-US intolerant, I cant eat cheese. en-US The fact is some cheeses have en-US less lactose than others. Try en-US aged cheese; it has less lactose en-US than fresh cheeses like Gouda, en-US Parmesan, provolone and en-US Swiss. You may be able to en-US enjoy with just a little discomen-US -en-US fort. en-US By the way, I did not en-US capitalized all the names of en-US cheese on purpose. If cheese is en-US named after a city or country, en-US its capitalized. If not, no cap. en-US Bet you didnt know that. All I en-US know is I wouldnt mind living en-US in the cities of Gouda or en-US Parmesan. en-US Some cheeses are illegal to en-US import into the United States en-US because of safety concerns en-US about bacteria. Those made en-US with raw milk aged under 60 en-US days to be specific. Also dont en-US worry about Ratatouille eating en-US your cheese. Studies show en-US mice prefer sweets over en-US cheese. Now, there are so en-US many ways to eat cheese I en-US dont know where to begin on en-US a recipe. In a large en-US saut pan over medium heat, en-US melt the butter and olive oil. en-US Pan-fry the cheese for 2 en-US minutes on each side. Cheese en-US will melt down; dont overen-US -en-US cook. Add the remaining en-US half-cup of brandy carefully, it en-US will flame up! Shake the pan en-US back and forth several times. en-US Add the lemon juice.
