en-USOnline video gaming en-US Volusia County styleen-USOnline gaming, or esports, is becoming increasen-US-en-US ingly popular, and it could become a big draw for en-US Daytona Beach.en-US We think Daytona Beach has the potential to en-US become one of the worlds great esports destinaen-US -en-US tions, said Heath Jones, CEO of 2050 esports, a local en-US company which is part of Koralis Entertainment, en-US formed in 2013 to develop entertainment content en-US including movies, comics, and other events.. We en-US are excited to continue developing our relationships, en-US our expertise, and our brand to ensure we are cenen-US -en-US tral to esports in the area.en-US The citys Ocean Center already has hosted en-US some big esport events, most recently the CEO en-US Gaming event from June 28 through July 2, en-US said Don Poor, Ocean Center director. The en-US event, which was the centers first CEO Gamen-US -en-US ing event, was a big hit and a great fit for the en-US Ocean Center and the city, he said.en-US There were 7,300 people who attended the gamen-US -en-US ing show. They were great to deal with and we en-US enjoyed having them and they enjoyed the building; en-US they gave us a lot of compliments to our staff and to en-US the facility. So, we were very pleased with them, Mr. en-US Poor said. That event fit this building extremely en-US well. The promoter did a video for us complimenten-US -en-US ing the city and staff and Ocean Center. Everything en-US they en-US did, en-US they en-US had great coopen-US -en-US eraen-US -en-US tion, and everyone really enjoyed en-US themselves.en-US In light of the recent and tragic shooting during en-US an esports event in Jacksonville, where three gamers en-US lost their lives and 11 others were injured during a en-US shooting, Mr. Poor said security for esports and en-US other events is on everyones mind. This 80-acre spate en-US of land was formed when en-US heavy dredging occurred to en-US clear the inlet and boat en-US channel in 1918. As it turned en-US out, the deposit of spoils en-US created a first-class tourist en-US stop and, for some, an actual en-US cottage industry. en-US This year, just before Labor en-US Day, I took off on the four-en-US hour drive south to Peanut en-US Island with my wife, Lana. en-US Over the years she has always en-US been a gamer, ready to try any en-US hair-brained outdoors scheme en-US I can come up with. en-US When we turned east off en-US I-95 onto Blue Heron Drive, en-US the island was only a mile or en-US so away. At 13th Street, we en-US made our way to the Island en-US Shuttle Boat. Originally I had en-US intended to take my kayak, en-US The Green Peanut, if for no en-US other reason than a photo of en-US The Peanut at The Peanut en-US would be a natural. en-US The boat ride to the eastern en-US side of the island costs $12 en-US each and took only 15 en-US minutes. The crew was en-US friendly and knowledgeable. en-US They told us about the en-US presidential bunker on the en-US island that was built to protect en-US JFK during the Cuban missile en-US crisis in the 1960s. (The en-US Kennedy Palm Beach comen-US -en-US pound was only minutes en-US away.) en-US Fine, but we were here to en-US snorkel. When we walked up en-US the 200-foot gangplank to the en-US island, we were immediately en-US excited. In the clear water en-US below, hundreden-US s of fish were en-US feeding and schools of needle en-US fish were leaping about. The en-US shuttle crew had told us we en-US had timed our visit just about en-US perfect since we were arriving en-US a couple hours before high en-US tide. The water coming in en-USfrom the Atlantic Ocean is en-US clear, but, on the outgoing en-US tide, water from the river en-US makes it more difficult to see.en-US Taking a look around, Lana en-US and I both agreed that if we en-US did not know better, we could en-US be in The Virgin Islands or en-US perhaps Aruba. Just beautiful! en-US The bottom was pure white en-US sand and the water crystal en-US clear. en-US Folks, Lana and I have been en-US snorkeling for decades and en-US these days the most difficult en-US part of it is clien-US mbing in and en-US out of the boat. At Peanut en-US Island, you can sit on the en-US beach to put your dive gear on en-US and just wade out. Within 30 en-US feet of the beach, we began to en-US see schools of spots, snapper, en-US angel fish and spade fish. en-US Great numbers of colorful en-US parrot fish were swimming all en-US around us and I even found a en-US school of rare rainbow parrots. en-US Those beauties have green, en-US gold, red, yellow, pink and en-US blue hues to admire. Quite a en-US sight! en-US On the eastern edge of the en-US island are several rock piles to en-US hold the fish and a tidal canal en-US leads to an inland lagoon en-US where you might swim with en-US the manatees. We had a great en-US time and would advise all to en-US give it a try. Snorkeling en-US equipment can be rented at en-US the shuttle boat landing, but en-US even if that is not your thing, en-US you are guaranteed to have a en-US good time in this little bit of en-US tropical heaven. en-US The island has picnic tables, en-US bathrooms and pavilions, but en-US there is nothing for sale there. en-US You must brinen-US g along the food en-US and drinks you need to be en-US comfortable. Be sure and en-US check the tide chart on the en-US website to get there on the en-US high tide for optimum en-US underwater viewing. The county and en-US city are both growing and en-US well see this area, especially en-US west of I-95, develop quickly en-US over the years.en-US Meanwhile, Samantha en-US Bergeron, Edgewater ecoen-US-en-US nomic development coordien-US-en-US nator, said Farmton is also en-US preparing to develop the en-US southern end of its huge tract, en-US which extends from State en-US Road 442 and straddles Mayen-US -en-US town Road to the south.en-US If you drive down Mayen-US-en-US town Road, you will see tree en-US clearing taking place as they en-US get ready to market tracts of en-US land to developers for housen-US -en-US ing, light industrial, commeren-US -en-US cial and retail features of the en-US planned unit development en-US project there, she said.en-US Deering Park Center, the en-US northern gateway to the en-US Farmton properties will be on en-US State Road 442, west of I-95.en-US The development was en-US planned to provide a mix of en-US uses, including single and en-US multi-family residential en-US developments, medical facilien-US en-USties, first-class hotel accomen-US -en-US modations, shopping and en-US dining destinations, as well as en-US industrial areas compatible en-US with the surrounding envien-US-en-US ronment.en-US Miami Corp. is at the point en-US that they are ready to start en-US marketing Deering Park, Ms. en-US Bergeron added.en-US After 10 years of planning, en-US she said the City of Edgewater en-US was ready for this growth.en-US Edgewater citizens have en-US been very adamant that they en-US want this growth, and they en-US want the retail and restaurants en-US it will bring, the economic en-US development director en-US stressed. The city has the en-US capacity to handle this en-US growth, and the city manager, en-US mayor and city council have en-US been planning this for a long en-US time, since before the Great en-US Recession.en-US She called it a smart develen-US-en-US opment that is balanced with en-US green space, conservation en-US areas and will provide susen-US -en-US tainability over the next 50 en-US years.en-US Preparing for construction en-US of the Deering Park and Resen-US-en-US toration road widening and en-US extension was scheduled to en-US begin this week on S.R. 442, en-US Ms. Bergeron said.en-US But, she added, the state en-US road probably wont be en-US extended to State Road 415 or en-US the Greenway (417).en-US A study that was conducten-US-en-US ed by the Expressway Authoren-US -en-US ity and FDOT found that it en-US would not be feasible to en-US extend 442 west due to the en-US sensitive wetlands that would en-US require costly bridges that en-US have to be constructed, Ms. en-US Bergeron explained. Instead, en-US I believe, that Farmton will en-US extend S.R. 442 through the en-US planned development to tie en-US into Maytown Road and en-US beyond into Brevard County.en-US Eventually, a major four-en-US lane road will be necessary to en-US move traffic south to Mayen-US-en-US town Road.en-US While planning an I-95/en-US Maytown Road interchange en-US has been ongoing for about a en-US decade, Farmton attorney en-US Glenn Storch told the Edgeen-US -en-US water City Council it could be en-US 10 years before that construcen-US-en-US tion begins.en-US Mr. Storch said Miami en-US Corp. has agreed to pay for en-US the interchange.en-US In partnership with Volusia en-US and Brevard Counties, Miami en-US Corp., which also manages en-US the land, created the Farmton en-US Local Plan, described as an en-US innovative 50-year vision for en-US the future to place nearly 80 en-US percent of its 44,000 acres into en-US conservation, including a criten-US -en-US ical regional wildlife corridor en-US and environmentally signifien-US-en-US cant habitat, according to Mr. en-US Storch.en-US Initially, Miami Corp. en-US balked at efforts by critics to en-US limit the development of the en-US massive property to unreguen-US -en-US lated 5, 10, 20 or 25-acre en-US ranchette subdivisions.en-US A years-long court chalen-US -en-US lenge ended in the Miami en-US Corp.s favor.en-US If the property had been en-US divided into ranchettes, it en-US would have been fragmented en-US forever, Mr. Storch told those en-US attending the Edgewater conen-US -en-US ference. Of en-US course, that explains why the en-US companys news releases dont en-US tell you much about what will en-US impact the Daytona Beach en-US area. Theyre written for stock en-US analysts and investors, who en-US are more interested in how its en-US actions affect the companys en-US stock price.en-US What we do know is en-US Unicorp National Developen-US -en-US ment of Orlando bought about en-US 21 acres of land planned as en-US Williamson Crossing for $6.7 en-US million. It included about two en-US acres Consolidated-Tomoka en-US had under contract with en-US another land owner. Williamen-US -en-US son Crossing, which wraps en-US around the big new RaceTrac en-US store at LPGA and Williamen-US -en-US son, is a mixed-use project en-US with retail and offices, but en-US Unicorp didnt respond to a en-US request for information, so we en-US can only guess that it plans to en-US follow the existing plan.en-US The company expects to use en-US the proceeds to buy a sinen-US -en-US gle-tenant income property, so en-US it wont have to pay taxes on en-US the gain. It has done that a lot en-US and amassed quite an impresen-US -en-US sive list of properties across en-US the nation. You can check that en-US out on the website, too.en-US But it also has been buying en-US up property in downtown en-US Daytona Beach, including the en-US First Baptist Church builden-US -en-US ings, and who knows what en-US could wind up going there. en-US The company does some en-US first-rate development of its en-US own, including the Land en-US Shark Caf and Cocina 214 en-US restaurant project.en-US We know whats happening en-US with a lot of the companys en-US land sales, including Latitude en-US Margaritaville, ICI Homes en-US Mosaic subdivision and en-US another one it has planned on en-US State Road 40. North Amerien-US -en-US can Development Group is en-US continuing construction on its en-US huge shopping center and en-US apartments, both to the east of en-US Tanger Factory Outlet Center. en-US Buc-ees is supposed to start en-US building its huge store soon en-US and two other big apartment en-US projects are planned.en-US But there also are plans for en-US other developments, including en-US a 1 million-square-foot en-US distribution center, a new en-US headquarters building for en-US Costa del Mar, one of those en-US office-condo type buildings en-US and another big office-retail en-US center to the north of LPGA en-US Boulevard and west of en-US Williamson. en-US Getting more information en-US about what is going on in that en-US area isnt easy as developers en-US always play things close to the en-US vest and, as I mentioned, en-US Consolidated-Tomokas news en-US releases dont give a lot of en-US detail about will happen. But if en-US even half of those 19 sales en-US agreements go through and en-US the developers are successful en-US with their plans, it will have a en-US huge impact on our area with en-US jobs and other opportunities en-US as well as increased traffic and en-US environmental impact.en-US ***en-US As I took a week off, the big en-UScommercial real estate deals en-US piled up a little bit, but here en-US they are. en-USA8 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USTen-USoday, Ill be discussing a en-US financial scam that can en-US be perpetrated by either en-US a man or woman. en-USIn my opinion, people who en-US commit this crime (and it is a en-US crime) are some of the en-US lowest of the low. Con en-US artists troll dating websites, en-US bars and countless other en-US places (even grief counseling en-US groups!) in search of the en-US lonely and emotionally en-US vulnerable. Maybe youve en-US seen it happen, or felt en-US helpless as a relative, or good en-US friend, has had his/her en-US money stolen. en-US Maxie, a widow, signed en-US up for an online dating en-US service to find a companion. en-US There, she met Franklin, a en-US seemingly well-to-do retiree, en-US who was in the midst of a en-US messy divorce. When his en-US divorce was final, Franklin en-US told Maxie he wanted to en-US travel the U.S. with her in en-US retirement. A dream come en-US true, right? en-US He convinced Maxie to use en-US her savings to buy a new, and en-US very expensive, recreational en-US vehicle. The home on en-US wheels was huge, comforten-US -en-US able and had all the latest en-US features and conveniences. en-US Everything was fine for the en-US first few weeks after the en-US purchase, but, soon, Franken-US -en-US lins affection for Maxie en-US waned. en-US They broke up, and not en-US so amicably. Maxie made en-US several attempts to get en-US Franklin to pay back the en-US money she had invested in en-US the RV, but, as you may have en-US already guessed . Franklin en-US had the vehicle titled only in en-US his name.en-US Annie met Mel in a en-US caf. Annie fell hard for the en-US younger man, who said he en-US was an actor. Unfortunately en-US Mel had no money and en-US couldnt hold a job. So, Annie en-US chose to support him, en-US financially. Though Mel en-US professed his love to Annie, en-US her elderly father and grown en-US daughter expressed their en-US displeasure and concern over en-US what appeared to be a en-US one-sided affair. en-US The more they comen-US -en-US plained, the more Annie en-US pushed her family away in en-US lieu of her relationship with en-US Mel. The charade went on for en-US a couple years before Mel en-US finally moved on. What did en-US he leave behind? Heartbreak en-US and a large dent in Annies en-US retirement savings.en-US Stories like these are not en-US uncommon. Admittedly, its en-US hard to make the right en-US decision when you are en-US engulfed in a whirlwind of en-US emotion. Love can make a en-US person blind to even the en-US most obvious of deceptions. en-US Scammers, however, know en-US how to manipulate their en-US victims by fulfilling this very en-US basic human need. en-US I write this column as a en-US warning. Scammers often en-US target older individuals en-US because they know they hold en-US the most wealth. Approach en-US potential relationships with en-US great caution and keep your en-US wits about you. Dont rush en-US into anything, especially en-US when asked to lend financial en-US assistance. Listen to family en-US and friends, without being en-US defensive. Discuss any and en-US all major financial moves en-US with your adviser. Please! en-US If youre having second en-US thoughts about someones en-US true intentions, remove en-US yourself from the situation en-US for a few weeks to gain some en-US perspective. Con artists can, en-US and do, live in our local en-US communities. They will en-US continue to lure the lonely. en-US Dont lose your money to en-US them. Dont become another en-US victim. en-US David D. DAYTONA BEACH PLANETGRANITEDAYTONA.COM T en-UShe past couple of weeks I en-US have been talking a lot en-US about getting your yard en-US ready for a storm. en-USThis week, I want to talk a en-US little about the cleanup en-US process after a storm. I want en-US to share some of the tips I en-US found useful while cleaning en-US up after Frances, Jeanne, en-US Wilma and Irma. These were en-US the last major storms to hit en-US our region. Although 2018 is en-US supposed to be below normal, en-US it only takes one tropical en-US system to make a mess of your en-US yard.en-US If you are like me, one look en-US at the yard and it makes you en-US wonder where you should en-US even start when planning your en-US cleanup effort. The first tool en-US you will need is a good quality en-US chain saw. Gas is preferred en-US over electric because the gas en-US chain saws have more power en-US and also if your power is out, en-US you will not be able to use en-US your electric chain saw unless en-US you have a generator. en-US Before you start cutting en-US your trees, be sure to take a en-US full survey of your yard. en-US Confirm that there are no en-US power lines entangled in your en-US work area and also that there en-US are no large dangling limbs en-US that could fall and hit you en-US once you start working. If a en-US large tree needs to be cut en-US down, it is probably best to en-US leave that to an expert tree en-US service. Most of my tree en-US debris was already on the en-US ground and simply had to be en-US cut up and taken to the curb.en-US Once you have all the large en-US debris removed and cut up at en-US your curb, the next thing you en-US should do is re-survey your en-US yard for other damage that en-US may have been hidden with en-US the larger tree branches.en-US When trying to clean up en-US small twigs and leaves from an en-US area that has either steppingen-US -en-US stones or gravel, a great tool to en-US use for cleanup is a gas blower. en-US I had a large garden area en-US covered with lava rock and en-US trying to use a rake to get the en-US debris was also picking up all en-US the lava rock. I brought out en-US the trusty gas blower and en-US about 97 percent of the debris en-US was magically whisked away! en-US In fact, as a preliminary task en-US before raking, I successfully en-US removed a good deal of debris en-US from the lawn area with the en-US blower. This made the next en-US pass with a regular garden en-US rake much easier. en-US Once you are done with en-US that, a pass with a mulching en-US lawn mower will really put the en-US finishing touches on your en-US yard. Once you finish getting en-US your yard back to some kind en-US of normalcy, you can start en-US planning your fall garden. Yes en-US I said fall, it is actually not that en-US far off. Stores already are en-US clearing out patio sets getting en-US ready for Halloween and en-US Christmas.en-US Remember, for all the latest en-US updates and information, go en-US to hometownweather.net.en-US Joe Zelenak has more than en-US 30 years experience in gardenen-US-en-US ing and landscape. We en-US believe we can get 11 parking en-US spaces in there, two of them en-US being handicap accessible, a en-US public shower and then an en-US (Americans with Disabilities en-US Act compliant) ADA dune en-US walkover at this location.en-US The project, however, isnt en-US just about a walkover and a few en-US parking spots, said Councilen-US -en-US woman Deb Denys, whose disen-US-en-US trict includes the ramp.en-US Its not just about a walkover en-US here. I think we are missing one en-US the main points of the whole en-US presentation, which is weve got en-US to renourish and restabilize that en-US whole dune area out there, and en-US we cant get our emergency en-US vehicles and beach vehicles en-US through there, Councilwoman en-US Denys said. So, were looking at en-US beach access for our citizens, en-US walkover access, but were also en-US looking and making sure we en-US have access to that area at the en-US same time renourishing and en-US restabilizing that whole area.en-US In addition, there is no en-US ADA-compliant walkover en-US access in the area, which is the en-US third most used beach area in en-US the entire county, according to en-US county officials.en-US Because of its high use, en-US funding really isnt an issue en-US because of our increased reveen-US-en-US nue for beach tolls, Councilen-US -en-US woman Denys said.en-US At the time it was constructen-US -en-US ed, the Eighth Street walkover en-US was ADA compliant, it is a en-US ramp, Ms. Wintwerp said, adden-US-en-US ing the compliance laws have en-US changed since the ramps conen-US -en-US struction. We are now required en-US to have the reserved handicap en-US parking to go with it.en-US Beach access and parking is en-US free for disabled persons in the en-US drive on areas, such as this one, en-US but when the beach access is en-US closed for capacity, high tide or en-US after hours, ADA compliant en-US parking is necessary. en-US Moving forward, coastal seren-US -en-US vices will now seek surveys and en-US other necessary studies, which en-US will allow the department to en-US have a more specific conceptual en-US rendering and get a more accuen-US -en-US rate cost estimate to the council. en-US Once council members approve en-US of that phase, the money initialen-US -en-US ly set aside for the surveys and en-US work on the vehicular access en-US ramp can be re-appropriated for en-US the walkover ramp, Ms. Winten-US -en-US werp explained.en-USBy Gina McKeeen-USgmckee@hometownnewsol.com
en-USA12 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USOen-USne of the questions I en-US am asked frequently en-US has to do with all of en-US the icons on the typical en-US Windows desktop.en-US Arent they slowing things en-US down? I never use most of en-US them, cant we get rid of en-US them? en-US I usually answer by en-US explaining most of the icons en-US on the average desktop are en-US not slowing the computer en-US down at all, but are actually en-US more like speed dial en-US buttons on a phone. Most en-US desktop icons are just en-US shortcuts to programs buried en-US deeper in the system and are en-US on the desktop so you dont en-US have to navigate through all en-US sorts of menus to launch a en-US program.en-US If you look closely at the en-US icons on your desktop, you en-US may notice some have a little en-US arrow in a little white box at en-US the lower left corner of the en-US icon. The arrow itself is kind en-US of curvy and will point to the en-US top right corner of the icon. en-US You may also notice other en-US icons (like the Computer en-US icon, the User folder icon, en-US the Recycle Bin, etc.) do not en-US have the little arrow. There is en-US a big difference between the en-US two types of icons. The icons en-US with the little arrows are en-US actually just shortcuts and en-US not the actual program (or en-US file). And shortcuts are really en-US really tiny and dont slow the en-US computer down at all!en-US But what about the icons en-US that dont have the little en-US arrow? Are they safe to get en-US rid of? That question is a en-US little harder to answer. You en-US see, any icon on your en-US computer that does not have en-US the little shortcut indicator is en-US either a user file or a system en-US file and messing with it can en-US cause problems. Icons on en-US your desktop that are not en-US shortcuts are either files that en-US have been saved on the en-US desktop or system files that en-US have been set there by the en-US operating system and care en-US should be taken when en-US manipulating them.en-US Another point I want to en-US make is people have different en-US ideas as to what the phrase en-US get rid of means. When en-US someone asks me to get rid en-US of all of the unused icons on en-US their desktop, what they are en-US invariably asking me to do is en-US to delete them. en-US Now, if you have been en-US reading my column for any en-US length of time, then you en-US know how I feel about en-US deleting things from your en-US computer. Its not something en-US I do casually! In fact I have a en-US saying, If I were king, Id en-US have the delete button en-US stricken from the keyboard! en-US My idea of cleaning a en-US Windows desktop by getting en-US rid of a bunch of stuff is not en-US to delete everything, but en-US leans more in line with the en-US phrase out of sight, out of en-US mind. People will watch en-US with a puzzled look on their en-US face as I create yet another en-US icon on their desktop (a new en-US folder), name it something en-US like Desktop Clutter and en-US then drag all of the unused en-US icons into the new folder. en-US Then, once the desktop is en-US down to just the icons that en-US actually get used, I drag the en-US Desktop Clutter folder and en-US drop it into the Users folder. en-US Then I usually spend the en-US next 10 minutes or so en-US explaining why I went en-US through all that trouble en-US rather than just deleting en-US everything. My explanation en-US really boils down to habit. en-US One of the worst habits en-US people get into with their en-US machines is the habit of en-US deleting stuff every time they en-US tidy up. Sure its great to have en-US a tidy desktop, but if you are en-US in the habit of casually en-US deleting stuff then eventually en-US you are going to delete someen-US-en-US thing you actually need. en-US Even worse is the habit some en-US people have of emptying the en-US recycle bin every time they en-US delete something. Thats just en-US a disaster waiting to happen.en-US My philosophy is out of en-US sight, out of mind. Tidying en-US up my system by sweeping a en-US bunch of unused shortcuts en-US (and actual files for that en-US matter) into a folder and en-US then moving the folder out en-US of sight ensures that if I en-US accidentally do get rid of en-USsomething I need, I can en-US recover it easily enough by en-US digging into the folder where en-US I moved it. en-US Does this mean I am en-US completely against deleting en-US everything? No, of course en-US not. Some things are indeed en-US trash and I have no problem en-US deleting them, I just have a en-US real problem with the habit en-US of deleting things with barely en-US a second thought. Ive seen en-US too many people delete their en-US way into too many problems.en-US Sean McCarthy fixes en-US computers. en-USA14 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USIen-USf you havent seen a mullet en-US run, you have missed out.en-US Sure, they get their little en-US legs moving and naw, thats en-US not right. Mullet cant really en-US run, or can they? en-US Each year when the ocean en-US temperatures begin to cool to en-US the north, hoards of mullet en-US head south to warmer climes. en-US As the big schools move right en-US along the coast, they attract en-US lots of hungry predators. In en-US Volusia County, we can expect en-US plenty of big red drum to be en-US trailing and, on occasion, even en-US fish we would normally catch en-US farther off shore. King en-US mackerel, cobia and tarpon en-US will be there to compete with en-US schools of marauding jacks to en-US get their fill. en-US When will this happen? en-US Unfortunately I cant tell you en-US exactly. The mullet run en-US because of some unknown en-US signal only they hear. en-US At this time of year, it is in en-US our best interest to be paying a en-US lot of attention to the surf. en-US When the mullet do begin to en-US pass by, they will be very en-US visible. On a calm day, look en-US for the slightest disturbance en-US on the surface. Some of us old en-US salts call it nervous water.en-US Most of the time, the big en-US predatory fish following the en-US mullet will give it away as they en-US splash and jump. At times it en-US can be quite a show. Add to en-US that the seabirds hovering en-US above and diving for the en-US scraps and it wont be difficult en-US to spot. en-US The best way to fish the en-US mullet run is to cast net a few en-US finger mullet from the surf en-US and toss that live bait out to en-US the edges of the passing en-US schools. The game fish will en-US stay just off the edges looking en-US for a mullet that is having en-US trouble keeping up. Like us, en-US they hope to get an easy meal.en-US Fishing your own bait off en-US the school will make it appear en-US to be easy pickings. Casting en-US into the center of the school en-US will make your bait more diffien-US -en-US cult to see. en-US As for me, during the mullet en-US run, I usually leave my rods en-US and reels home to opt for the en-US cast net. I am happy just to net en-US some tasty mullet for frying or en-US smoking. When times are en-US good, three or four casts with en-US a small net will fill a medien-US -en-US um-sized cooler. Ocean mullet en-US are cleaner than those we en-US catch inshore and therefore en-US better tasting. en-US It has been said that the en-US lowly mullet is the most en-US consumed fish on the planet, en-US and I would have to agree. en-US They are found in fresh, salt en-US and brackish waters in en-US practically every country on en-US the planet. en-US Once the mullet make it en-US into the rivers, they can be en-US caught with hook and line en-US from docks and piers. Since en-US they are mostly herbivores, en-US you should chum them with en-US small pieces of light bread. en-US Once they begin feeding, en-US moisten bread and roll it into en-US balls to dry in the sun. That en-US will make the dough balls a en-US little tougher and better to stay en-US on a hook. For this type of en-US fishing a cane pole and no en-US weight is about perfect. If you en-US do it correctly, you can have a en-US lot of fun and some very good en-US eats. en-US Smoked mullet dip is one of en-US my favorite things and, en-US properly fried, mullet filets en-US can be delicious. (I like to use en-US a thousand island and horse en-US radish dip with mine.) So, for en-US the next few weeks, keep an en-US eye on the surf and try to be en-US there to see the mullet run.en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years. Maybe its en-US your three best buddies, or en-US maybe its a bunch of friends. en-US For the Wednesday Warriors en-US Golf Group of Brevard en-US County, its a group of 15 or so en-US that has room for more.en-US The Warriors began in 2008 en-US when a group from north and en-US a group from south Brevard en-US County got together. The two en-US groups had such fun playing en-US together, they decided it en-US would be a great idea to play en-US together more often. Wednesen-US -en-US day being in the middle of the en-US week proved to be a great way en-US to break up the week for this en-US bunch of mostly retired en-US golfers.en-US The name Wednesday en-US Warriors came about when en-US the group from south Brevard en-US played in a tournament. They en-US had to give their group a en-US name, and Wednesday en-US Warriors was chosen by the en-US group and they decided to en-US keep it.en-US We are open to men and en-US women aged 19 and up, said en-US member coordinator Domien-US -en-US nick Leone. The majority of en-US our members are veterans en-US from all service branches, and en-US we currently four couples.en-US While the group is based in en-US Brevard, there is no requireen-US -en-US ment that you live there to be en-US a member. In fact, the group is en-US a traveling bunch that plays as en-US often outside of Brevard en-US County as it does in.en-US The week I spoke to en-US Dominick, the group was en-US heading to Orlando for the en-US day. The group car-pools to en-US places out-of-town. They do en-US not stay overnight, preferring en-US to be out and back on the en-US same day. Most travel is no en-US more than an hour or so drive en-US from Brevard.en-US The Warriors play every en-US Wednesday, all year round. en-US Granted some members are en-US seasonal, but the group really en-US wants members to play each en-US week as much as possible. The en-US bigger numbers allow en-US Dominick to get better greens en-US fees for everyone.en-US Tee times vary from week to en-US week, but in most cases are in en-US the morning. There are en-US occasions where the group en-US will move the day it plays to en-US accommodate holidays, en-US changes in playing conditions en-US or to take advantage of special en-US pricing at a course.en-US Players may play any game en-US they wish between themselves. en-US The group, as a whole, does en-US not have any monetary en-US challenges. Some players like en-US to play for skins or a Nassau or en-US even a cold beverage. Thats en-US entirely up to those players.en-US The group plays by USGA en-US Rules, but allows some en-US latitude. Members are also en-US given an unofficial handicap en-US and an average score, allowing en-US everyone to see how they en-US perform against one another.en-US Pairings are made by the en-US coordinator and players are en-US usually switched around a bit en-US to encourage everyone to meet en-US and get to know one another. en-US Remember, the groups main en-US objective is fun and camaradeen-US -en-US rie.en-US Current members may en-US bring a guest up to two times en-US without having them join the en-US group. A guest is anyone who en-US is a friend, acquaintance or en-US local relative. Non-local en-US relatives may play up to four en-US times per year.en-US Being made up mostly of en-US retired military service en-US members, there is a bit of en-US service branch pride among en-US the members. With this in en-US mind, the group holds an en-US annual All Service/Civilian en-US Challenge. Members of each en-US of the military service en-US branches are teamed against en-US the other branches. The en-US current champion is the U.S. en-US Army. My late father would be en-US happy.en-US In addition to the challenge, en-US the group also holds other en-US events and socials throughout en-US the year. Many involve the en-US member and their non-playen-US -en-US ing partner.en-US If you live in, close to or en-US dont mind driving to Brevard, en-USyou should consider joining en-US the Wednesday Warriors Golf en-US Group. Initial administrative en-US membership is just $25 and en-US covers your membership for en-US the first five years with the en-US group. After that, its a $5 en-US renewal fee every year, en-US beginning in year six.en-US The group would love to en-US welcome more members interen-US -en-US ested in enjoying golf and en-US great camaraderie. Who invented them? en-US Who cares? Theyre here, lets en-US eat doughnuts every day! en-US OK, OK, enough celebraten-US -en-US ing. Its time to talk doughen-US -en-US nuts. They have been around en-US for hundreds of years. Every en-US culture has fried some kind of en-US dough throughout the en-US centuries, but no one knows en-US where they started. en-US What we do know is the en-US Dutch in the mid-19th en-US century were frying dough en-US balls in pork fat called en-US olykoeks, or oily cakes. The en-US center of the dough would not en-US cook all the way through, so en-US they started stuffing the cake en-US with fruits, nuts and other en-US fillings that did not require en-US cooking. The Dutch brought en-US the oily cake to North en-US America and many cultures en-US made their own variations.en-US In1847, a sea captain named en-US Gregory Hansen decided to en-US poke holes in the doughnut to en-US get rid of the uncooked center en-US by putting them in the spoke en-US of the ships steering wheel. He en-US would have a treat near him en-US during the long hours of en-US sailing. The story was puben-US -en-US lished in a Boston newspaper. en-US In the early 1900s, doughen-US -en-US nuts were time-consuming to en-US produce because each one was en-US made by hand. But that would en-US change in 1924 when a en-US Russian immigrant developed en-US a machine to make doughen-US -en-US nuts. The machine was en-US featured at the 1934 Chicago en-US Worlds Fair and doughnuts en-US became extremely popular. en-US The tasty treat even endured a en-US name change from doughnut en-US to donut. en-US In 1937, Vernon Rudolf en-US brought a yeast raised donut en-US recipe from a New Orleans en-US chef and Kren-US ispy Kreme was en-US born. The first store was built en-US in Winston-Salem, N.C. Today en-US they have grown to more than en-US 1,000 stores worldwide. en-US The first Dunkin Donuts en-US opened in Quincey, Mass., in en-US 1950 and eventually surpassed en-US Krispy Kreme stores, opening en-US 10,585 worldwide. en-US Yes, we love our donuts and en-US fried dough. Just visit your en-US local fairs and see what en-US everyone is eating. Its not just en-US fried dough, but fried pickles, en-US cookies, candy bars, ice cream, en-US bananas and fruit. en-US If you want to make your en-US own donuts or fry something en-US special, it en-US might be easier than en-US you think. If you have a small en-US fryer, that is great. If not, use a en-US heavy bottomed pot, 3-4 en-US quarts. Fill half way with en-US canola, soybean or peanut oil en-US whichever you like. Buy a en-US good quality pancake mix. Try en-US Sams commercial brand and en-US follow instructions for en-US pancakes. Just add a little less en-US water to make it thicker, not en-US too watery. en-US If you len-US ike fried frozen en-US bananas, peel the bananas, en-US freeze, then dip in pancake en-US batter and place in hot oil. en-US Temperature should be 350 en-US degrees; it will float, so use a en-US slotted spoon and keep en-US turning until golden brown en-US then remove. You can fry en-US pickles, candy bar, and en-US Twinkies; just dip and fry. en-US My wife came up with a en-US great idea; use a small wooden en-US skewer and place 3-4 strawen-US -en-US berries or blueberries on it, en-US dip and fry. You will be en-US surprised how good they taste. en-US You can make your own en-US funnel cake. Place batter in a en-US plastic squeeze bottle and en-US pour in circles in the fryer. en-US Frying is a little bit of work, en-US but worth the efforts. If youre en-US afraid of frying, just go out en-US and buy your favorite dessert. en-US At least now you know how its en-US done.
