To en-US continue that success, board en-US members look at which busien-US -en-US nesses have been the most sucen-US-en-US cessful, and why.en-US When we opened it, the en-US idea was to provide a place for en-US companies to come in and en-US grow, he said. It is one of the en-US fastest growing industries in en-US the world. Its worth multiple en-US tens of millions of dollars en-US globally. The goals of our comen-US -en-US pany are to help other compaen-US -en-US nies reach a certain demoen-US -en-US graphic.en-US One focus is millennials, en-US whom, he said, No matter en-US how well produced your en-US advertisement is, if it is not en-US getting to them on their devicen-US-en-US es, they are not seeing it.en-US Everybody is becoming en-US their own entertainment, Mr. en-US Jones said. People can make a en-US very good living by just being en-US online celebrities and game en-US players. We want to put goods en-US and services into that demoen-US-en-US graphic. We are going to build en-US our content so that it is not en-US just gaming but game-related en-US entertainment. en-US Koralis-2050 also is working en-US on a furniture prototype to en-US accommodate gamers, which en-US they have developed with en-US Holly Hill-based American en-US Technical Furniture Co.en-US Besides building partneren-US -en-US ships, he stressed the art of en-US engagement, qualities the en-US incubator itself embraces. en-US UCFs incubator programs en-US are nationally recognized, said en-US Rob Ehrhardt, Volusia County en-US economic development direcen-US-en-US tor.en-US The Daytona Beach incubaen-US-en-US tors success has largely been en-US because of the County Counen-US-en-US cils commitment to providing en-US job opportunities for local resen-US -en-US idents and providing the funden-US -en-US ing.en-US The countys efforts are part en-US of what Mr. Ehrhardt called, en-US an ecosystem for job creen-US -en-US ation.en-US He noted, The ecosystem en-US works best when we all have a en-US genuine commitment to colen-US-en-US laboration, communication en-US and coordination. We are all en-US on the same team. We all want en-US to see each other succeed.en-US The council pays UCF to en-US manage the incubator, which en-US is on county property. en-US The countys interest is in en-US recognizing the private sector en-US creates jobs, not government, en-US Mr. Ehrhardt said. The public en-US sector is trying to create an en-US environment that stimulates en-US job creation. One other aspect en-US is we have tried to create this en-US geographic location, kind of en-US the center of gravity for things en-US for entrepreneurs.en-US The incubator is at 601 en-US Innovation Way in Daytona en-US Beach. en-US For more information, en-US visit en-US en-US en-USIncubatoren-USFrom page A1 en-USPhoto by Diane Careyen-USProgram director Gordon Hogan and Site Manager Connie Bernal stand inside en-US the Volusia County Business Incubator before their quarterly advisory board en-US meeting. en-USCongressman, Tallahassee mayor face off for governor en-USNo surprise, Rick Scott will face en-US Bill Nelson for U.S. Senateen-USFor Hometown en-USReceptacle finds a new useen-USOne mans trash is another en-US mans treasure. en-US The quote by Hector Urquen-US-en-US harts introduction to 1860s en-US Popular Tales of the West en-US Highlands applied to a recent en-US phone call to Southern States en-US Management Group.en-US A property owner in one of en-US the communities SSMG manen-US-en-US ages in Grand Haven contacten-US-en-US ed Community Association en-US Manager Troy Railsback, asken-US -en-US ing where he bought the en-US receptacle used for submitting en-US architectural review applicaen-US -en-US tions. en-US Mr. Railsback explained to en-US the gentleman where the box en-US was ordered and questioned en-US what exactly he was looking en-US for. All of the main en-US roads had been paved and it en-US was possible to drive the en-US length and breadth of our en-US country without ever riding en-US on dirt. en-US In Florida, U.S. 1, the great en-US Maine to Key West byway, was en-US a busy thoroughfare. All along en-US the way, enterprising business en-US folks set up shop to try and en-US extract a bit of profit from the en-US endless parade of passing en-US motorists. In Volusia County, en-US the fleecing of the tourists en-US became a way of life for many. en-US Anyone who could get en-US frontage on the highway, en-US would stick up some sort of en-US wayside attraction. These en-US ranged from the sublime, like en-US Marineland north of here, to en-US the sad, like the little gas en-US station just south of Port en-US Orange. There on property en-US that is now Sleepy Hollow en-US Park, the filling station lined en-US the roads with signs advertisen-US -en-US ing live alligators and monen-US -en-US keys. Once a family pulled in, en-US they would find a foot-long en-US gator in a bowl and a tired old en-US spider monkey in a chicken en-US wire cage. No matter, the en-US tourists would invariably buy en-US Indian River citrus or a en-US coconut carved to look like a en-US chimp. Money was flowing.en-US Just a little north in South en-US Daytona sat the world-famous en-US Sea Zoo. (At least that was en-US what the signs proclaimed.) en-US See the leaping porpoises and en-US George the sea cow.en-US If you dont believe those en-US were truly different times, en-US consider I own a copy of Look en-US Magazine (circa 1952) that ran en-US a two-page article on George. en-US According to Look, George en-US was one of only two manatees en-US living in captivity in the world. en-US He was a national celebrity. en-US The magazine piece told about en-US early sailors mistaking sea en-US cows for mermaids. en-US Of course, these days en-US manatees populate nearly en-US every theme park and en-US aquarium in the world. The en-US story does not tell where the en-US other captive manatee lived, en-US but George, the most famous en-US sea cow in America, occupied en-US a roadside attraction in South en-US Daytona. en-US Can you imagine the en-US business done by The Sea en-US Zoo? Add to it that right next en-US door was the Museum of en-US Speed and you know parking en-US must have been at a premium.en-US To this day, manatees are a en-US popular attraction. Have you en-US ever tried to visit Blue Springs en-US State Park in February? en-US Several times I have suggested en-US in this space that the city of en-US Daytona Beach would be wise en-US to create an outdoor manatee en-US attraction in the canals along en-US Beach Street downtown. Now en-US that they are considering a en-US major remake of the area, that en-US idea makes even more sense.en-US The sea cows drew tourists en-US in the s and they still do. I en-US dont believe it would be all en-US that difficuen-US lt to accomplish. A en-US constant warm water source en-US and a few heads of cabbage, en-US and the big manatees would en-US stay there all winter. Families en-US from the north would flock en-US there to view the big cuddly en-US marine mammals. After all, en-US George and The Sea Zoo en-US showed us the way. en-US Dan Smith is on the board of en-US directors for the Ormond Beach en-US Historical Society and The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association and is the author en-US of two books, The Worlds en-US Greatest Beach and I Swear en-US the Snook Drowned. I think some of our tax money would be well en-US spent on some police and beach safety personnel whose job is, en-US while not completely specific to, focused on littering. en-US It is all too common to see a smoker casually toss a butt on the en-US ground or stick it in the sand on the beach. Ugggh. You only en-US need to have a roving beach patrol stop when they see someone en-US smoking on the beach. I en-US believe the recommendation en-US to wait a year is well-intenden-US -en-US ed . but, it is also a general en-US piece of advice. The key point en-US is to not rush into decisions en-US that can have significant en-US long-term financial impact. en-US Widows and widowers need to en-US give themselves time to assess en-US the realities of their new en-US situation. With that said, if en-US there are time-sensitive en-US financial decisions that need en-US to be made, then they need to en-US be made. en-US However, it is not the best en-US idea to go it alone. If you are en-US already working with a en-US financial adviser, you should en-US have been involved in en-US planning and investing en-US discussions. If so, then you en-US can lean on him/her to guide en-US you through any pressing en-US financial decisions. If the en-US planning you did when your en-US spouse was alive included en-US survivorship scenarios, those en-US plans can be reviewed for the en-US steps that should be taken en-US next.en-US Also, if you have close en-US family and friends, they can en-US be great sounding boards for en-US decisions. Even better, they en-US can accompany you to en-US meetings. Keep in mind, en-US though, unless your well-inen-US -en-US tentioned helpers are trained en-US extensively in finance, it is en-US usually better to rely on the en-US advice of professionals. For en-US example, when one of my en-US clients became a widow, her en-US kids flew in and started en-US moving all of her accounts en-US around, even before my firm en-US knew her husband had passed en-US away! Fortunately she thought en-US to double check with me en-US before it was too late. We were en-US able to stop the transactions. en-US Im sure the kids meant well, en-US but, had those changes gone en-US through, they would have en-US created significant tax, and en-US financial, problems for my en-US client.en-US So, you see, it all depends. en-US When a lifelong partner dies, en-US the emotions a person feels en-US can be overwhelming, and en-US many people experience en-US significant memory issues en-US during bereavement. Its not en-US the time to make drastic, en-US life-altering decisions, but, en-US rather, to follow the plans you en-US have, hopefully, made well in en-US advance. Surround yourself en-US only with those friends, family en-US members and professionals en-US who you know you can en-US depend on and trust, and let en-US them assist and guide you in en-US the months to come.en-US A friend, and PlanStronen-US -en-US gerTV guest, Kathleen Rehl, en-US Ph.D., CFP, wrote the book, en-US Moving Forward on Your en-US Own. No city, en-US neighborhood or town is en-US immune to it. All our commuen-US -en-US nities have children who have en-US been affected by it.en-US Laurie Parker of Port en-US Orange first approached en-US Mayor Burnette with the en-US request. She is part of a pasen-US -en-US sionate group of Volusia en-US County residents seeking to en-US bring awareness, and funding, en-US to childhood cancer research en-US to find a cure.en-US But is was the story of en-US Anthony Franzini of Port en-US Orange that inspired Ms. en-US Parker and others. en-US Ms. Parker who is friends en-US with Anthonys mother, said, en-US her interest in pediatric cancer en-US started in June 2017 when en-US Anthony Franzini was diagen-US -en-US nosed with a diagnosis of a en-US terminal brain tumor called en-US DIPG (diffuse intrinsic contien-US -en-US nent glaucoma). Anthony was en-US 11 years old and should have en-US had his whole life ahead of en-US him. He loved Jesus, his famien-US -en-US ly, sports and life. He was en-US robbed of things we take for en-US granted in just four short en-US months. (Anthony died Oct. en-US 5).en-US There is no cure, there is en-US no real treatment, Ms. Parker en-US said. This particular cancer en-US slowly robs children from en-US every essential bodily function en-US all while their cognitive ability en-US remains intact. This means en-US they are fully aware of the fact en-US that their systems are shutting en-US down one by one.en-US Anthony was so brave, he en-US fought hard, she said. I was en-US continually amazed by his en-US strength and determination. en-US Even in the darkest days, his en-US smile could light up a room. en-US Watching his journey was the en-US hardest thing Ive ever witen-US-en-US nessed and it pushed me to do en-US something.en-US The Food and Drug Adminen-US -en-US istration has approved only en-US four drugs to treat childrens en-US cancers with less than 4 peren-US -en-US cent of every dollar spent by en-US the National Cancer Institute en-US on children, Ms. Parker noted.en-US She added Neil Armstrongs en-US daughter died of the very same en-US disease more than 50 years ago en-US and the treatment options are en-US the same. en-US My goal is to bring awareen-US -en-US ness, motivate others to raise en-US awareness, and hope to see a en-US cure for cancer in my lifetime, en-US she said.en-US Ms. Parker, Jamie Franzini, en-US Sarah Stephens and her mothen-US -en-US er, Carol Wickham, traveled to en-US Washington, D.C. in April en-US with the Childhood Cancer en-US Alliance to lobby congress to en-US pass the STAR (Survivorship, en-US Treatment, Access and en-US Research) Act. The bill will en-US increase funding for childen-US -en-US hood cancer research. The bill en-USwas passed and is in the proen-US -en-US cess of being fully appropriaten-US-en-US ed. en-US (Anthony) was appalled at en-US how many kids were on the en-US oncology floor, Ms. Franzini en-US said. The day after his diagen-US -en-US nosis he asked us, his parents, en-US and his doctor if when he was en-US feeling better if he would be en-US allowed to come back and en-US dress up as a super hero and en-US bring the kids goody bags. en-US That was very inspiring to us. en-US My husband and I were comen-US-en-US pletely flabbergasted that there en-US is still a pediatric cancer diagen-US -en-US nosis that was incurable. They en-US say its rare but its not rare. en-US One is too many. Our children en-US are dying.en-US There are many types of en-US cancer in adults that can now en-US be cured. The cancer treaten-US -en-US ments that would help DIPG en-US because it is so aggressive en-US would obviously help other en-US childrens other types of canen-US -en-US cers.en-US Ms. Franzini stated she was en-US very proud that Port Orange is en-US supporting their efforts and en-US Mayor Burnette in particular en-US went above and beyond.en-US For more information or how en-US to donate to the Warrior Kids en-US Foundation, visit en-USwarriorkidsen-US-en-US page A1 en-USPhoto courtesy of Jamie Franzinien-USFrom left, Laurie Parker, Jamie Franzini, Eleanor Stephens (baby), Sarah Steen-US -en-US phens and Carol Wickham recently traveled to WashingtonDC to raise support en-US for the STAR Act.

en-USA14 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USRandy Barber/staff photographeren-USDavid Davis of Port Orange drives the ball of the tee during the third annual en-US Charlie Green Memorial Golf Tournament at The Preserve at Turnbull Bay en-US on Saturday, Aug. 18.en-USNice drive en-USIen-USn golf, the only connection en-US that we have with our en-US equipment comes through en-US the grip. We depend on the en-US grips on our clubs to control the en-US club and to transmit to the ball en-US where it is to go. Grips also send en-US back to our brains information en-US about how well we struck the en-US ball.en-USA few years ago I played en-US with what had to be the worst en-US set of rental clubs ever. Only a en-US couple of clubs out of the 14 in en-US the bag had a grip that wasnt en-US as hard as a rock and as en-US slippery as a fish. It made for a en-US strange round to say the least. en-US I was constantly afraid the en-US club would fly out of my en-US hands. To prevent that, I en-US gripped the club too tightly, en-US putting far too much tension en-US into my arms and body. I en-US eventually, just tried to hit en-US different shots with the two or en-US three clubs that had a grip en-US slightly younger than I.en-US Todays grip market is huge. en-US The number of choices we en-US golfers have to perfect our en-US connection with our tools is en-US amazing. Grips come in more en-US colors and combinations than en-US Crayola can put in a box, as en-US well as different weights and en-US different sizes.en-US We didnt always have all en-US these choices. In fact, there are en-US few written records regarding en-US the history of golf grips. We en-US can assume that the shepherds en-US who invented the game, likely en-US did not turn their crooks en-US upside down and wrap the en-US bottom with anything before en-US hitting stones around the en-US hillsides of Scotland.en-US It is unclear when grip first en-US appeared on clubs, but we do en-US know that a wool listing was en-US used in the 18th century. In to en-US the 19th century, this would en-US be covered with sheepskin en-US before leather and then rubber en-US would take over in the 20th en-US century.en-US Some golfers would apply en-US chalk to their grips to help en-US them stay dry. Additionally, en-US olive poil, wax, pitch and en-US varnish would be used to help en-US golfers better grip their clubs.en-US While grips last much en-US longer today than they did en-US back when they were simple en-US wool listings or leather, they en-US should still be replaced about en-US every 40 rounds. More often if en-US your hands sweat a lot or they en-US are constructed of a material en-US that starts to break down. en-US Your grips should feel tacky in en-US your hand and should never en-US get to the point where they are en-US hard or cracked. Its always en-US good to replace your entire en-US set, keeping the same feel en-US with every club in your bag.en-US Many people do not know en-US the importance of getting the en-US proper grip size or being fit for en-US your grip. When custom en-US fitting your clubs for shaft, en-US shaft flex, loft, lie and more, it en-US is equally important to have en-US the right grip size. There are en-US many grip sizes available and en-US you can even alter the en-US thickness of the grip during en-US the installation process.en-US A grip that is too small may en-US cause overactive hands, while en-US one that is too large may en-US prevent you from releasing the en-US club through impact. One en-US good measure is that when en-US gripping your club, your en-US middle and ring finger should en-US just about touch the palm pad en-US of your hand.en-US Between grip changes, you en-US should wash your grips en-US frequently. Anyone who has en-US watched Fred Couples play, en-US will notice that he not only en-US plays without a glove, but en-US wipes his grips clean with a en-US moist towel before every shot.en-US As you play, sweat and oils en-US from your hands are transen-US -en-US ferred onto your grips. If you en-US fail to clean then, your grips en-US will become slippery and en-US difficult to hold onto during en-US your swing. Using just a towel en-US dipped in a soapy water en-US solution will do the trick. en-US Dawn dish soap is great for en-US cutting through the hand oil en-US and sweat that accumulate on en-US your grips.en-US In 1925, golfs original grip en-US manufactured was established en-US by Elver Lamkin out of his en-US garage in suburban Chicago. en-US His hand-crafted, premium en-US leather grips quickly became en-US the rage among golfers en-US looking for a consistent, en-US comfortable, and tacky grip.en-US In the 1960s, under the en-USdirection of Elvers son en-US Rovbert Lamkin, the company en-US began manufacturing leather en-US and rubber hybrid grips. en-US Eventually the company en-US would move on to synthetic en-US rubber, providing a more en-US affordable grip.en-US There is only one thing en-US more affordable than an en-US affordable grip, and that en-US would happen to be a free en-US grip. en-US Thanks to Lamkin, I am en-US giving away not just a grip, but en-US an entire 13 grip set of its en-US latest grips to one lucky en-US reader. The heavy rain en-US of May and June had trapped en-US lots of freshwater runoff in en-US the swamp and when I tasted en-US it, I could not determine en-US there to be any salt at all. One en-US thing we all know is that en-US when low salinity chases off en-US saltwater fish, the snook are en-US the last to leave. They are en-US famously tolerant of fresh en-US water. en-US On this morning, I had a en-US definite destination in mind. en-US On my two previous trips en-US there, I had found snook en-US under a downed tree. That en-US was a place where a stream en-US narrowed and then made a en-US hard turn. That caused the en-US tidal current to increase, en-US sweeping bait through the en-US partially submerged limbs. en-US After about a half-mile en-US paddle, I approached as en-US quietly as possible, but was en-US immediately disappointed. I en-US had tried to time my arrival en-US with the beginning of the en-US incoming tide, but I was too en-US early. Trying to predict a tide en-US back in there is always tricky. en-US No tide; no fish feeding and en-US nothing to do but wait. en-US It would be over an hour en-US before the tide showed any en-US speed at all, but as soon as it en-US began to move the snook en-US started to feed. On my last en-US trip to the tree, I had hooked en-US a nice 30-inch one and the en-US two of us had engaged in en-US quite a tussle. en-US At one point, I had pulled en-US back hard and my rod bent en-US double with the snook en-US surfacing on the other side of en-US the boat. I had no idea the en-US fish had gone under the en-US kayak and was a good ways en-US downstream on the other en-US side. That time the hook had en-US eventually pulled out and this en-US time I was hoping for round en-US two. en-US Now, to be sure, this is a en-US difficult place to fish. You can en-US hear and see snook popping en-US in the safety of the tree en-US branches, but do you dare en-US cast a lure in there? My plan en-US was to fish around the edges, en-US hoping to entice one to come en-US out and take the bait. That en-US worked and pretty quickly I en-US had a scrappy little 18-inch en-US fish at the net. Good fun, but en-US I could see much larger fish en-US striking deeper in the tree. en-US That was just too tantalizing en-US to ignore. en-US I knew the cast would have en-US to be perfect and to ensure en-US that, I beached the Green en-US Peanut and got out on a en-US sandbar. The cast was good en-US and the jig fell through the en-US limbs. I didnt dare move it en-US for I knew that as soon as I en-US did, the hook would catch a en-US branch. No matter, before it en-US could sink far, the line fairly en-US sizzled as it came speeding en-US back toward me. My only en-US chance of getting that lure en-US back was for it to come out of en-US there in the lip of a fish. That en-US would make it pretty much en-US weedless. en-US Out the big snook came en-US leaping and tumbling like an en-US Olympic gymnast. Previously en-US I had been fishing in bad luck en-US with the hook pulling free, en-US but not this time. The hook en-US was as tight as a hair in a en-US biscuit. I cranked the big fish en-US over to the shallows around en-US the bar and was able to en-US release it without ever en-US handling it.en-US Folks, snook season is now en-US open and runs until Dec. 15, en-US but I would encourage you to en-US release all of them you catch. en-US You wouldnt want to end en-US someone elses fun for the en-USsake of a couple fish sanden-US -en-US wiches now would you? en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years. Its not a en-US national holiday but rather an en-US observance like Mothers Day en-US and Fathers Day. en-US Sorry, I never knew granden-US -en-US parents had a special day. In the en-US restaurant industry, Mothers en-US Day is the big day with 80 en-US million Americans taking mom en-US out to dine. On Fathers Day its en-US a mere 50 million, but Granden-US -en-US parents Day is near the bottom en-US of the list with around 20 en-US million folks dining out.en-US That is just ahead of Adminen-US -en-US istrative Professional Day. Yes, en-US its not a big dining out holiday. en-US There are more than 68 million en-US grandparents in the county with en-US one or more grandkids. They en-US will receive more than 70 en-US million cards, but thats well en-US below the 130 million that en-US moms receive on their special en-US day. en-US So whats going on? I am en-US afraid they are still taking care en-US of their children and now en-US grandchildren as well. Many en-US families are reaching out to en-US grandparents for help. At one en-US time, they were mom and dad en-US taking care of us, nurturing, en-US caring and always there when en-US we needed them. Then one day en-US our life changed and we started en-US raising a family, and now mom en-US and dad are grandma or en-US grandpa or whatever special en-US name your family calls them, en-US YiaYia, Papou, Poppi, Memaw, en-US Pawpaw.en-US They are still Mom and Dad, en-US but now they are helping their en-US grandchildren with the same en-US devotion and dedication they en-US showed when raising their own en-US family. They are born with a en-US special gift for compassion, en-US understanding and true caring. en-US If we need anything, grandparen-US -en-US ents will always try to help. en-US So, on this special day, just en-US try to show them how much en-US you appreciate them. Ask the en-US grandparents to your home if en-US you can, and let them share en-US with your children. If that is not en-US possible, take pictures or Skype en-US (youll probably have to show en-US them how.) But make sure you en-US let grandparents know just how en-US grateful you are to have them in en-US your life. Make it a very special en-US day. en-US Try this special menu for en-US your grandparents they en-US should enjoy it. Give them the en-US gift of happy memories they en-US can look back on.en-USSeared Scallopsen-USIngredients (4 servings)en-US 1 to 1 1/2 pounds dry sea en-US scallops, approximately 18-20en-US 3 teaspoons butteren-US 3 teaspoons olive oilen-US Kosher salten-US Freshly ground black pepperen-US Directionsen-US Rinse with cold water and en-US thoroughly pat dry.
