en-USComplaints continue en-US for communications poleen-USResidents packed the Port Orange City Council en-US meeting Aug. 21 to voice their concerns over the en-US location of a cell phone tower.en-US Some council members agreed with them that the en-US site for the tower at Port Orange United Church of en-US Christ at 651 Taylor Road would be inappropriate.en-US Vince Tarsitano, who lives in the adjacent Steeple en-US Chase neighborhood, stated the proposed pole en-US would be located within a quarter mile of his house.en-US If this cell tower is approved, it would be comen-US -en-US pletely out of character for Port Orange and city offien-US-en-US cials to approve such an erection within an entirely en-US residential area, Mr. Tarsitano said.en-US Councilman Bob Ford echoed the sentiment of en-US Mr. Tarsitano. In my opinion, having looked en-US at the site, it is totally inappropriate, he said.en-US Councilman Ford added, The message I en-US want to send to Aen-US T&T tonight is that Im en-US opposed to this because it is a violation to en-US our land development code.en-US Fellow Councilman Drew Bastian added, I en-US dont see a need for it and I think that the property en-US location is just totally inappropriate. There has to be en-US other areas in the city that can provide a better locaen-US -en-US tion.en-US AT&T, which submitted the application to build en-US the pole, sent a legal representative to the meeting. en-US She assured the council the company would adhere en-US to the Land Developmeen-US nt Code; just as she did at en-US last months planning board meeting.en-US Eugene en-US Trip Healy and Paul en-US Kern presented their case to the council just as en-US they had done the previous month. And the council en-US seemed to be against the tower; even though they en-US couldnt take any official action.en-US City Manager Jake Johansson stated, The staff en-US has the obligation to make sure that the staff has en-US everything researched and right before we finally en-US make this decision. en-USAll Volusia County en-US Schools have either a school en-US guardian or a law enforceen-US -en-US ment officer, which is espeen-US -en-US cially new for elementary en-US school students this year, but en-US there are a few differences en-US between the two.en-US The chief difference en-US between a law enforcement en-US officer or a school guardian en-US is that guardians do not have en-US the authority to make an en-US arrest and are employees of en-US the school district.en-US Guardians have underen-US -en-US gone extensive background en-US checks, drug testing, a psyen-US-en-US chological screening, 132 en-US hours of training with the en-US (Volusia County) Sheriffs en-US Office, 12 hours of diversity en-US training and another 12 en-US hours of training on security en-US in schools and strategies for en-US dealing with students, en-US Nancy Wait, VCS director of en-US community information seren-US -en-US vices, explained in a news en-US release. Guardians will carry en-US a concealed weapon and en-US wear a district polo that idenen-US-en-US tifies him or her as a guarden-US-en-US ian.en-US Every middle and high en-US school within the district are en-US assigned VCSO deputies or en-US police officers, and with the en-US exception of Champion, en-US Palm Terrace, South Daytoen-US -en-US na, Turie T. Small and Westen-US-en-US side elementary schools, en-US which have Daytona Beach en-US Police Officers, all other eleen-US -en-US mentary schools in the disen-US-en-US trict either have, or will have en-US School Guardians.en-US At present, Chisholm, en-US Edgewater Public, Frienden-US -en-US ship, Holly Hill (K-8), Indian en-US River, Sunrise, Volusia Pines en-USNew school en-US security in place; en-US programs starting en-USPhotoen-US museum en-US marksen-US 40 yearsen-US en-USIts a part of Daytona en-US State College many may en-US not know about, but the en-US Southeast Museum of Phoen-US -en-US tography is celebrating 40 en-US years of showcasing the art en-US of photography.en-US On the main campus of en-US DSC, the website states, en-US The museum exhibits, en-US collects, preserves, and en-US interprets photography to en-US facilitate teaching and en-US learning at Daytona State en-US College, and enhances the en-US communitys understanden-US-en-US ing and appreciation of en-US culture, history, art and en-US photography.en-US Museum Director James en-US Pearson, now in his third en-US year, said it was born out of en-US a commercial photography en-US program at the community en-US Photo by Diane Careyen-USJames Pearson, director of the Southeast Museen-US -en-US um of Photography, stands in front of some of en-US the photographic artwork displayed. en-USHalifax Humane en-US Society reaches en-US funding goalen-USAfter three years, the Halien-US -en-US fax Humane Societys Reimen-US -en-US aging the Future campaign en-US has achieved its capital funden-US -en-US ing goal.en-US Thanks to donors throughen-US-en-US out Volusia County, the $3.6 en-US million capital campaign goal en-US is now complete with the last en-US of the contributions raised at en-US the Neighbors Helping Neighen-US -en-US bors Golf Tournament Aug. 18 en-US at LPGA International.en-US It was a long time coming, en-US said Pam Clayton who is the en-US societys chief financial develen-US-en-US opment officer. A capital en-US campaign is a huge endeavor, en-US especially for a not-for-profit. en-US We are so grateful to all of our en-US valued donors for helping us en-US achieve our capital campaign en-US goal. This effort has been a en-US major accomplishment and we en-US could have never achieved en-US success without the support of en-US the entire community.en-US The capital campaign got a en-US big boost from Nancy and en-US Lowell Lohman, who donated en-US more than $1 million towards en-US the Lohman Adoption and Pet en-US Center, and from Patricia en-US Culler, who donated more en-US than $500,000 for the Lee C. en-US and Patricia Culler Boarding, en-US Grooming and Travel Center.en-US The first phase of the capital en-US campaign was the addition of en-US the dog park, funded in part en-US by a Volusia County ECHO en-US grant. There is a large dog and en-US small dog play yard, along en-US with a walking trail at the en-US park, which is open daily.en-US The second phase of the en-US capital campaign was the Cullen-US -en-US er Boarding, Grooming and en-US Travel Center to help provide a en-US regular revenue stream to supen-US-en-US port the shelters services.en-US The final phase of the camen-US-en-US paign is to transform the main en-US building to facilitate great en-US beginnings to lifelong relaen-US -en-US tionships and provide en-US enhanced educational opporen-US -en-US tunities, Ms. Clayton said. en-US The main adoption lobby en-USPop Up Parken-USRandy Barber/staff photographeren-USWith the fire hose spraying everywhere, Max Minnick, 5, of Port Orange colen-US -en-US lects the water in his firefighters helmet during the Pop Up Park at Riveren-US -en-US walk Park in Port Orange on Friday, Aug. 24. en-USA2 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-UScollege. It started with three en-US glass display cases requested en-US by instructor Dan Biferie in en-US the photography department. en-US It kept getting larger and when en-US collections of artworks started en-US coming in, and were housed in en-US a new building, that was the en-US true beginning, Mr. Pearson en-US said.en-US From that one piece, 40 en-US years ago, we are now sitting en-US on 5,000 photographs and en-US photographic ephemera, he en-US said. It was a grass roots camen-US-en-US paign. What separates us from en-US galleries is our collections.en-US The museum also has a en-US community mission, providen-US -en-US ing workshops and classes. en-US Also, it is actually part of a en-US community, Mr. Pearson said. en-US We call this partnership the en-US Southeast Center for Photoen-US-en-US graphic Studies. It is the museen-US -en-US um, Daytona State College en-US photography department and en-US the University of Central Floren-US -en-US ida photography that is taught en-US on this campus. The three of en-US us combined, we have lots of en-US offerings.en-US Both students and faculty en-US have their work displayed as en-US well as work from children en-US that attend workshops. All en-US museum programs are free. en-US Workshops can include topen-US -en-US ics such as preservation of en-US family photographs, archiving en-US and cataloging, basic digital en-US camera operations and comen-US-en-US position techniques, and even en-US intermediate to advanced en-US lighting and editing techen-US -en-US niques.en-US Family Photo Fun Days, en-US offered one to two times a year en-US allow families to receive a free en-US family portrait. Art in Action en-US is an ongoing monthly proen-US -en-US gram where veterans meet and en-US learn from professional artists, en-US to discover and cultivate their en-US own talents, and to transform en-US their experiences through the en-US thoughtful and therapeutic en-US form of self-expression.en-US The two-week digital photo en-US academy each summer allows en-US teens ages 14-17 to learn a en-US wide range of photographic en-US styles while creating their own en-US portfolio in the process. Top en-US photos are included for display en-US in the Youth Gallery Space at en-US the museum. There are also en-US free teen photography outings. en-US Christina Katsolis is the en-US museums programming direcen-US-en-US tor and in charge of the Digital en-US Photo Academy. We had 15 en-US participants, she said. We en-US have quite a few that continue en-US year to year so when they en-US graduate, they actually have a en-US pretty professional photo porten-US -en-US folio. I have had certain stuen-US-en-US dents get full rides to our colen-US -en-US leges byen-US showing off that en-US portfolio. en-US I think it is important that en-US people feel like this is their en-US museum, Ms. Katsolis said. en-US There are a lot of programs en-US we have that they can take en-US advantage of, even early on. I en-US see how talented these young en-US kids are and they are eager to en-US learn. en-US Art Speaks: Voices from the en-US Community is a lecture series en-US hosted by the museum, en-US designed to engage the comen-US-en-US munity by presenting a wide en-US array of guest speakers and en-US professional photographers.en-US The museum also houses a en-US gift store and, during the fall en-US and spring, the Cinematic Disen-US -en-US cussions film series is curated en-US by Senior Professor of Photoen-US-en-US graphic Studies Eric Breitenen-US -en-US bach. Screenings take place on en-US select Wednesdays at 2 and 6 en-US p.m. in the Madorsky Theater en-US at the museum, and admission en-US is free.en-US Exhibits change every 6-8 en-US weeks with 8-10 different en-US exhibits a year and include en-US work from faculty members, en-US youth workshop attendees and en-US internationally known phoen-US -en-US tographers. en-USThe museum is now one of en-US only 13 facilities in the U.S. en-US dedicated exclusively to phoen-US -en-US tography, and one of only a en-US handful of such institutions en-US nationally that share a scope, en-US reach, and depth of collection en-US and activities in this specific en-US field.en-US Photography is a continuen-US-en-US ously changing field, Mr. en-US Pearson said. Photography is en-US contingent on the type of techen-US-en-US nology thaen-US t produces it. You en-US are going from darkroom en-US work and film to digital. Phoen-US-en-US tography is an art form like no en-US other that can bring people en-US together.en-US He described one current en-US exhibit by faculty member en-US Jayanti Seiler as a gateway to a en-US bigger idea. All of these picen-US-en-US tures point to the relationship en-US between humans and animals en-US and what that really means. en-US Photos more than anything en-US can change peoples minds, en-US Mr. Pearson said. en-US While admission is free, a en-US funding cutback has prodded en-US the museuen-USm to request a $5 en-US donation at the door. Donors en-US will receive a button to wear at en-US future visits, so they wont be en-US asked to donate again.en-US I want to ensure thaten-US the en-US museum is here another 40 en-US years, Mr. Pearson said. My en-US goal is to raise and endow en-US funding so then-US at programs in en-US the museum can remain. A en-US Friends of the Museum group en-US is also being formed.en-US The museum is in the Mori en-US Hosseini Center at 1200 W. en-US International Blvd. in Daytona en-US Beach. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 en-US p.m. Ten-US uesday, Thursday and en-US Friday; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. en-US Wednesday; and 1 to 5 p.m. en-US Saturday. A en-US new space for pet retail items en-US will offer more pet products. A en-US space also has been created to en-US perform behavior assessments, en-US which should expedite moveen-US -en-US ment of animals to the adopen-US-en-US tion floor. en-US Ms. Clayton said the educaen-US -en-US tion room will be updated en-US with improved technology to en-US provide engaging summer en-US camps, animal welfare trainen-US -en-US ing, animal obedience and volen-US-en-US unteer training. Hospital grade en-US tile will be installed throughen-US -en-US out the animal movement en-US areas in the building to preen-US-en-US vent spread of disease.en-US No funding will be spent to en-US enhance administrative offices en-US as they remain functional, en-US though humble, spaces, she en-US said.en-US The non-profit Halifax en-US Humane Society has served en-US the Greater Daytona Beach en-US area since 1937. As one of the en-US largest humane societies in en-US Florida, it handles more than en-US 25,000 animals each year. en-US HHS has a four-star rating en-US on the Charity Navigator, en-US thanks to its efficiency and en-US transparency. Since 2012, en-US intake is down 44 percent, en-US which can be attributed to en-US aggressive spay/neuter initiaen-US-en-US tives as well as programs to en-US keep animals in homes. Euthaen-US-en-US nasia numbers continue to en-US decline with a 14 percent en-US decline from 2016 to 2017, the en-US numbers are down 71 percent en-US since 2012.en-US We are not the same shelter en-US many remember, Ms. Claytoen-US -en-US na said. We have changed en-US over time. en-USExecutive Director Miguel en-US Abi-hassan said in the past en-US people might visit the shelter en-US once every seven years to en-US adopt a pet. We want to be a en-US regular stop in the life of a en-US Volusia County resident, and a en-US safe and informative stop for en-US visitors to our community. We en-US hope to achieve this by adding en-US pet-centric recreational en-US opportunities, support seren-US -en-US vices and fun activities.en-US The society also hopes to en-US bring the community together, en-US Mr. Abi-hassan said. Our en-US vision to address the problem en-US of pet overpopulation is only en-US as strong as the community en-US that pulls together to unite for en-US it.en-US For more information, visit en-US halifaxhumanesociety.org. 137 Bay St., Daytona Beach Tues-Sat 9:30am-5pm SouthernHomeFurniture.com 2017 2017 C H O I C E R E A D E R S 386.257.2662 Largest used furniture showroom in the county Same day Smile in your Hometown 2017 2017 C H O I C E R E A D E R S rf ntnbrfr r fn rf nnnnntnnb nnntnnb n At Cardinal Oral Surgery, we use the latest technology and techniques in oral surgery to provide our patients with the best quality care. Buz has so far en-US presented guests like en-US NASCAR Hall of Famer en-US Bobbie Allison and his en-US brother, Donnie, long time en-US racing photographer Don en-US Bok, and former NASCAR en-US mechanic Olin Hopes. All en-US racing royalty as is Buz en-US himself who has spent a en-US lifetime chronicling stock car en-US history. en-US When I first met him about en-US 20 years ago, he was head of en-US the NASCAR archives, but en-US was later sent to Charlotte to en-US help with the opening of the en-US NASCAR Hall Of Fame. After en-US retiring from that facility, he en-US returned to Daytona Beach, en-US but it didnt take long for him en-US to get his hand back in. en-US Each week, the show en-US features interviews with en-US drivers, mechanics, team en-US owners and racing historians. en-US That last category would en-US include me and my longtime en-US friend, Suzanne Heddy. She en-US and I have worked together en-US for years to make the public en-US more aware of this areas en-US fabulous racing history. en-US Beginning in 2003, Roland en-US was a big part of the centennien-US -en-US al events at Ormond Beach to en-US commemorate the 100-year en-US anniversary of the first beach en-US races. Those events were en-US staged by several groups, but en-US at the forefront was The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association. Suzanne and I are en-US both on that groups board and en-US Roland is the president.en-US That day, as Roland, en-US Suzanne and I sat before a en-US large crowd, we enjoyed an en-US easy rapport of the type that en-US can only come from a long en-US friendship. The three of us en-US play off each other as easily as en-US pups from the same litter.en-US Roland guided us through en-US stories of early beach racing en-US and of the fun we had staging en-US the centennials. We spoke of en-US the fantastic cars that had en-US attended along with some of en-US the characters who owned en-US them. We talked of the racing en-US celebrities who had come to en-US the beach to be a part of it. en-US People like drag racing king en-US Big Daddy Don Garlits and en-US NASCAR team owner Jack en-US Rousch among them. en-US I told of the time just before en-US the first centennial when my en-US teen-aged son handed me the en-US phone saying, Dad, there is en-US some nut on the phone saying en-US he is Jay Leno! Of course, it en-US was Jay, a world famous car en-US guy, who couldnt resist en-US getting in on the fun we were en-US having on the beach. From the en-US podium, we introduced en-US motorcycle racing legend Doc en-US Batsleer and Al Wanser, who en-US owns a sleek 1930 Model A en-US racer. Both of those fellows en-US competed in the centennial en-US beach races. en-US On that day, a lot of racing en-US history was covered, but as en-US always happens when the en-US three of us get together, the en-US hour passed too quickly. We en-US barely chippen-US ed the surface of en-US the beach racing stories we en-US hoped to tell. Still, the crowd en-US seemed to enjoy it and why en-US not. There we were sitting on en-US the beautiful deck at Racings en-US North Turn, enjoying great en-US food with the famous beach en-US only feet away. en-US That restaurant is actually a en-US functioning museum with en-US walls covered with NASCAR en-US and land speed record en-US memorabilia. If you are a en-US racing fan, or just a fan of the en-US beach, stop down to be in the en-US live audience for Buzs next en-US show. God sees everything. Hope en-US you are feeling shameful now. en-USGive bicyclists more roomen-USSince there are improvements going on up and down U.S. 1, en-US couldnt the bicycle lanes be widened to maybe six feet? en-US The law states motor vehicles need to give a bicycle three feet en-US of clearance. The existing bike lane is barely three feet wide in en-US most areas. This is not enough room when vehicles are doing 45 en-US mph (or more often much faster). Factor in cell phone usage, en-US navigation devices and any other number of distractions, and it en-US makes for a dangerous ride, particularly north of Willmette en-US where the posted speed limit is 55 mph.en-US I know as a motorist, if I am traveling in the right lane and I en-US approach a bicyclist in the bicycle lane, in order for me to give en-US the bicycle proper clearance, I need to be almost in the left lane. en-US In fact, unless there is a vehicle next to me in the left lane, my en-US wheels will be on or over the white dividing lines to safely pass a en-US bicyclist.en-US As a frequent bicyclist on this road, I can tell you some motoren-US -en-US ists will do the same. Then there are the motorists who dont give en-US an inch. This is why the lanes need to be widened where possien-US -en-US ble. Thank you en-USIn response to: Beach not up to codeen-USAnother major issue that plagues Bethune Beach are the numen-US -en-US ber of properties ten-US hat have yet to be repaired since the last two en-US hurricanes. en-US When driving through the neighborhoods, in some cases, it en-US appears these homes are abandoned. Home owners who own en-US property adjacent to such structures are disgusted due to the en-US indifference on the part of these property owners.en-US Needed repairs include roof shingles, fascia, soffits, siding and en-US even porches. County code enforcement officers must be aware en-US of these properties yet there are few obvious signs that these en-US properties are being rehabilitated or condemned.en-US As proposed by the Volusia County Property Appraiser, en-US maybe these non-homestead property owners will do the right en-US thing when and if unpen-US aid fines and liens are recovered on tax en-US bills. en-USPort Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores A-9en-USHen-USello, my name is Mike en-US Peerless and I am the en-US reverse mortgage loan en-US director at Holland Mortgage en-US Services, a subsidiary of en-US Holland Financial. en-USDavid Holland has asked en-US me to step in this week and en-US share a strategy with you on en-US reverse morten-US gage loans. So, en-US here we go.en-US Some retirees, and those en-US who are about to retire, en-US worry their nest eggs wont en-US last. They are concerned en-US about the long-term viability en-US of Social Security en-US and en-US Medicare, and/or they dont en-US feel theyve saved enough in en-US their 401(k) plans. This leads en-US many to ask, Are there any en-US other cash flow alternatives en-US out there? The answer is en-US yes, one of them could be a en-US reverse mortgage loan. en-US If you are 62 or older, and en-US own your home with a small en-US or no mortgage, you could en-US establish a reverse mortgage en-US line of credit (REVLOC). en-US Although there are closing en-US costs, once established, the en-US line of credit grows at a en-US pre-determined rate, cant be en-US arbitrarily frozen or canceled, en-US and can be used, as needed, en-US to meet cash flow needs. en-US Once money is borrowed on en-US the REVLOC (and this is a en-US big distinction versus a en-US regular home equity line of en-US credit), the borrower is not en-US required to en-US make any en-US monthly payments, as long as en-US he/she lives in the residence, en-US pays property taxes and en-US homeowners insurance, and en-US maintains the property. en-US Heres a strategy that can en-US keep interest and mortgage en-US insurance expenses low. en-US Step 1: Establish the en-US Reverse Mortgage Line of en-US Credit; en-US Step 2: Pay the upfront en-US costs associated with en-US establishing the line by en-US making payments (even en-US though they are not en-US required); en-US Step 3: Watch your en-US REVLOC credit line increase en-US each year (every month, the en-US line of credit wen-US ill grow at the en-US same rate as you would be en-US charged on any monies that en-US are borrowed). This strategy en-US reduces the overall cost, en-US while providing the very en-US important flexibility of en-US having a line of credit you en-US can draw on without having en-US to make regular interest or en-US principal payments. en-US Four Benefits: en-US 1. A REVLOC can make en-US more funds available for en-US emergencies, as well as home en-US improvements, travel and the en-US grandkids education. en-US 2. The REVLOC, if desired, en-US can be used to take monthly en-US payments over your lifetime, en-US and that of a spouse, if he/she en-US is also on the loan. en-US 3. If you rely on your en-US investments for regular en-US income, you can switch your en-US withdrawals to a REVLOC en-US during a stock market en-US decline (thereby avoiding the en-US liquidation of investments en-US while they are down in en-US value). Doing so could help en-US susten-US ain your income during en-US difficult financial times. en-US 4. Borrowing on a en-US REVLOC can provide the en-US funds needed for in-home en-US care. Why not access some of en-US your homes equity to pay for en-US home care that lets you stay en-US in your home as long as en-US possible?en-US These are just a few en-US examples of how a reverse en-US mortgage loan may help en-US those 62 and olen-US der maintain en-US their financial independence en-US and lifestyle!en-US David D. Throw in beautiful en-US views and a breeze off the en-US ocean, and you have a perfect en-US quick round of golf.en-US Where does one go to find en-US just such a treat? My quest en-US took me to Island Dunes en-US Country Club on South Ocean en-US Drive in Jensen Beach. About en-US 3.5 miles north of the round-en-US a-bout at Jensen Beach en-US Boulevard and State Road en-US A1A, this track offers a nice en-US get-away from the normal.en-US Island Dunes plays to a par en-US of 31 from four sets of tees en-US and measures from 1,738 en-US yards to 2,126 yards long. en-US There are four par-4s and five en-US par-3s. While there is no en-US driving range at the course, en-US there are a few sets of tees and en-US nets for those wanting to get en-US in a few full swings before en-US heading to the first tee.en-US The first hole may the most en-US difficult par-3 on the course. en-US Playing anywhere from 113en-US to 170yards and playing due en-US east, you can find yourself en-US hitting anything from a wedge en-US to a middle iron or hybrid en-US depending on how the wind is en-US blowing. One of my buddies en-US reports that when he plays a en-US second nine, the wind en-US sometimes picks up so much en-US in just a couple hours he has en-US to hit two to three clubs more en-US just to get to the green.en-US The second hole is your en-US first par-4. In addition to en-US being the shortest of the en-US par-4s, this hole also has the en-US widest fairway. If you struggle en-US to get the ball on the fairway en-US here, you need to watch out en-US for the mangroves and en-US wetlands you will encounter en-US over the rest of your round.en-US The third hole is a beautiful en-US par-3. Measuring just 106 en-US yards from the back, there is en-US no excuse for missing the en-US green here. If you do, you will en-US find a challenging pitch or en-US chip or bunker shot to a en-US severely sloped green.en-US After a couple more par-3s en-US and a short par-4, you come to en-US the most challenging par-4 on en-US the course, the 360-yard en-US seventh. Your tee shot here en-US must hug the left side of the en-US fairway or you will be blocked en-US out and forced to hit a blind en-US approach to a small green. en-US Also, the longer your drive, en-US the narrower the fairway en-US becomes and the more likely en-US you are to find a bunker or en-US waste area. If you miss this en-US green, you are better off if en-US your ball lands left or short of en-US the green.en-US The par-3 eighth is Island en-US Dunes signature hole, and it is en-US beautiful. In fact, the ride en-US along the raised wooden en-US bridge through the mangroves en-US to the tee is soothing by itself. en-US Playing to 145yards from en-US the back tees, your tee shot en-US must carry the mangroves and en-US wetlands and land on a green en-US that is only about 45feet deep en-US with the Indian River sitting en-US behind. Its an intimidating en-US shot, as you have to take in the en-US wind, the carry over the en-US hazard, and yet try not to hit en-US the ball onto the beach en-US beyond.en-US The finishing hole is a en-US beautiful, but frightfully en-US narrow, 353-yard par-4 that en-US runs along the river. en-USA12 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USyou hug the river side of the en-US fairway, the better your angle en-US will be for your approach. A en-US quirky feature of this hole is a en-US short Green Monster wall en-US that runen-US s along the mangroves en-US down the right side as you en-US near the green. If you hit your en-US tee shot far enough, you can en-US play the carom and find your en-US ball back in the fairway with a en-US short wedge to a well-protecten-US -en-US ed green.en-US Island Dunes en-US may not have en-US monster yardage to intimidate en-US the best players, but it does en-US have undulaen-US ting greens and en-US some narrow areas that will en-US penalize wayward shots. Best en-US of all, its an easen-US y course to en-US walk, and with the breeze off en-US the ocean or the river, its a en-US pleasurable way to enjoy a en-US round. I admired the twin 200 en-US horse Yamahas and how well en-US the craft was appointed. en-US When the arrow came on, en-US the boat began to move slowly en-US forward. The cen-US ar in front of en-US me was a nice Porsen-US che and the en-US driver had his window down en-US while smoking a cigarette. en-US When the rear of the boat en-US drew alongside the sports car, en-US the automatic bilge pump en-US decided to turn on. A large en-US and steady blast of water shot en-US into the car, hitting the driver en-US in the head and dumping at en-US least five gallons of water into en-US the Porsche. My, oh my, the en-US fellow was infuriated. en-US The persons in the boat tow en-US vehicle continued on their en-US way oblien-US vious to what had just en-US happened. I think they were en-US going to find out, for the car en-US pulled out of line to follow en-US them. I considered going with en-US them as well just to see what en-US the consequences might be en-US but I thought better of it. en-US Not long ago, I told you of en-US my nice annual trip down to en-US Sebastian Inlet just south of en-US Melbourne. On my last day en-US there, it happened to be en-US opening day of the lobster en-US mini-season and the state en-US park anen-US d boat ramp were en-US jumping. It was so busy, I en-US decided not to launch and, as en-US I headed out of the park, I en-US noticed a family snorkeling en-US along the south bank of the en-US inlet. That rocky area could en-US hold a few lobsters and I en-US stopped to see how they were en-US doing. en-US As I sat on a picnic table, I en-US saw their floating dive flag get en-US away and take off on the en-US strong outgoing tide. I yelled en-US to the father I would drive east en-US and try to catch it at the en-US fishing pier and I did just that. en-US I had no luck and the flag was en-US picking up speed as I watched en-US from the shore. Just then the en-US mother came running down en-US the road and when she saw the en-US flag leaving, she jumped right en-US in with no hesitation.en-US Now everyone knows en-US Sebastian Inlet is a treacheren-US -en-US ous place and no one would en-US try to swim in such a raging en-US current, but there she went. en-US Pretty quickly the woman en-US began to scream for help. I en-US was the only one nearby. Now en-US I must ask: If a person jumps en-US into a raging stream, am I en-US obliged to follow? I dont think en-US so. Stupid is as stupid does. en-US Still, I knew I couldnt just en-US stand there and watch the en-US woman drown. I ran to my en-US boat for a life vest, thinking en-US maybe I could throw it to her en-US or, in the worst case, I would en-US have to put it on and try to en-US swim out. Not a plan I en-US relished. Thankfully, when I en-US returned, the woman was en-US crawling out and only needed en-US a hand up from me. en-US So you see, anytime you are en-US around water or boats or en-US fishermen, trouble can find en-US you. The fellow towing the en-US boat in Daytona Beach en-US probably found that out. You en-US dont have to be fishing to get en-US into trouble. en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years. Unionization en-US was considered a crime at the en-US time, so the parade prompted en-US Prime Minister John A. en-US Macdonald to repeal the en-US anti-union laws, and a en-US celebration followed. en-US Soon afterward the United en-US States adopted the holiday, en-US celebrating it in September. en-US The long Labor Day weekend en-US of fun, picnics and food en-US became a signal of the end of en-US summer and going back to en-US school. en-US Growing up in Florida, I en-US can remember hating to see en-US Labor Day weekend come, en-US because it meant the end of en-US summer fun and jobs. No en-US more corn dogs, cotton candy en-US and snow cones, or going en-US swimming or fishing. It was en-US time to get ready to go back to en-US school mature, learn and en-US one day enter the work force. en-US That was many years ago. en-US Today, like millions of en-US Americans, I look forward to en-US the mini-vacation from work, en-US but it always brings back en-US memories of my childhood en-US growing up in Florida near the en-US oceans and seeing it every day en-US and enjoying its pleasures. en-US One day when I retire, I can en-US go back to my childhood en-US pleasures and eat a corn dog en-US anytime I want, watch the en-US sunset over the ocean, and en-US when Labor Day comes it will en-US be more enjoyable because en-US every day after it will still be en-US Labor Day! Funny how life en-US goes full circle. en-US Now let us talk about food. en-US No, I am not giving you a en-US corndog recipe. That would en-US be too easy. Buy a buttermilk en-US pancake mix and follow en-US directions. Add a tablespoon en-US of cornmeal. Pat dry the hot en-US dogs and dip in batter and fry en-US until golden brown. On the en-US other hand, just buy them en-US frozen. The real food on en-US Labor Day has turned into a en-US weekend of BBQ and everyen-US -en-US one cooking their favorite en-US foods over fire. en-USB-6 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shoresen-USWen-USith the quiet hurrien-US -en-US cane season so far, en-US there is plenty of time en-US to add some great plants to your en-US garden.en-USHow about adding some en-US exotic tropical plants to your en-US landscape? One of my en-US favorites is a plant called the en-US Travelers Palm. These graceful en-US plants can add tropical en-US splendor to just about any en-US garden. en-US The plants boast huge leaves en-US that resemble those of a en-US banana tree. In fact, the en-US Travelers Palm is not a palm at en-US all but rather it is related to the en-US banana family. The plant can en-US grow upwards to 20 feet at a en-US rapid pace. My plant has en-US withstood three hurricanes en-US and several freezes, but still en-US always comes back hard and en-US strong. I have to do some en-US major trimming after a en-US hurricane, but the plant has a en-US remarkable ability to revive en-US itself and comes back looking en-US better and stronger then en-US before. My Travelers Palm is en-US nearing that 20-foot mark as en-US we speak. en-US The Travelers Palm has en-US some unique history in how it en-US got its name. Many years ago en-US back in the pioneer days, en-US people traveling long distancen-US -en-US es on foot did not have any of en-US the conveniences we have en-US today. Finding water was not en-US as simple as going to the en-US corner grocery store. Since en-US these magnificent plants store en-US abundant amounts of water in en-US the base of their trunks, en-US pioneer travelers could tap en-US that water in the trunks of the en-US tree and use it for drinking. en-US That is how the name Travelen-US -en-US ers Palm came about. If you en-US have ever have the opportunien-US -en-US ty to trim one of these trees, en-US you will get nothing short of en-US an unexpected shower! en-US A lot of people want a plant en-US that gives them a great en-US tropical look, but they want en-US something that will not grow en-US really fast and stay small as en-US long as possible. The Sago en-US Palm may be the answer.en-US These plants are actually en-US not palms at all, but are en-US actually considered a cycad. en-US The plant boasts a lacy en-US appearance similar to a fern. en-US These plants are slow growers en-US and will grow to around 10 en-US feet. If you find a larger plant en-US at a nursery, they will be en-US costly, mainly because of how en-US long it takes to grow them. en-US They are hardy and mine has en-US survived three hurricanes and en-US several freezes with flying en-US colors. They will make a great en-US additioen-US n to your exotic en-US tropical landscape. en-US If you have a shady spot en-US around your house and want a en-US real treat, try a Bamboo Palm. en-US The plant features a reed like en-US appearance, hence the name en-US Bamboo Palm. The plant gives en-US the viewer the image of exotic en-US bamboo with small palm en-US leaves. The plant can grow en-US from six to 10 feet and is hardy en-US to just below freezing. I have en-US one that has been in the en-US ground for about 10 years and en-US also has survived hurricanes en-US and freezes with flying colors.en-US The next exotic tropical on en-US the list is the Washingtonian en-US Palm. This palm is a fast growen-US -en-US er that can easily get to heights en-US of 60 feet. This plant does en-US great during periods of en-US drought and extreme temperaen-US-en-US tures. It can easily tolerate en-US dessert heat into the en-US 100-degree range. The plant en-US also will survive in an area en-US where soil stays moist. en-US Joe Zelenak has more than en-US 30 years experience in gardenen-US-en-US ing and landscape.
