en-USReport says Beachside en-US Daytona set to blossomen-USIt may not happen as quickly as many people en-US would like, but local leaders are excited about recen-US-en-US ommendations and plans to revitalize Volusia en-US Countys beachside area. en-US The Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce en-US heard Thursday, July 12, about the Beachside Redeen-US -en-US velopment Committees recommendations at the en-US monthly Eggs & Issues breakfast program at LPGA en-US International. The committee has been meeting the en-US last year and is starting to present findings to local en-US governments. en-US Guest speaker Frank Molnar, managing partner of en-US The M Group and a committee member, reviewed en-US the groups findings for attendees. en-US Every recommendation we came up with en-US was unanimous, Mr. Molnar said. Really it en-US is getting en-USeveryone together and working on en-US the same page. At the end of the day we have en-US to create something in that area that is going en-US to give people a reason to go down there.en-US Mr. Molnar cited Wynwood Walls Art en-US District in Miami as the model to emulate. en-US If we can have something like that as a draw, then en-US we can have year-round restaurants and year-round en-US wine bars and art galleries and create a hub so it en-US would be a huge draw moving things in the right en-US directions.en-US There aren-US e great things happening on beachside. en-US The key is everyone working together. The chamber, en-US the city government, the county government, worken-US -en-US ing en-US with developers. en-US We are all moving in the right direction, en-US Mr. Molnar said. I have lived in this community a en-US long time and I have never seen such great momenen-US -en-US tum and so many people working together towards en-US the common goal of improving on beachside and I en-USWe all share in our comen-US -en-US munitys vibrancy and en-US future said David Jones, en-US Community Development en-US Manager for the Community en-US Foundation of Volusia & en-US Flagler, a division of the local en-US United Way. en-US But just how to share in en-US that vibrancy and future isnt en-US always easy, Mr. Jones said.en-US Many generous families en-US and businesses are interested en-US in contributing to important en-US community charitable causes en-US that are meaningful in their en-US lives, but are faced with the en-US challenges associated with en-US developing and managing an en-US effective giving plan, Mr. en-US Jones said. en-US The Community Foundaen-US -en-US tion created PassionFunds to en-US provide support and tools for en-US giving.en-US We care about what you en-US care about, he said. If you en-US are passionate about wanting en-US to make a difference in a paren-US -en-US ticular area of interest or with en-US a specific non-profit organien-US-en-US zation, we want to help you en-US in any manner possible. Softening redevelopment en-US rules to attract investors was en-US cited as another solution.en-US The committee made recen-US-en-US ommendations regarding speen-US -en-US cific operational and policy en-US issues identified for each of the en-US corridors. These reflected en-US many of the concerns presenten-US-en-US ed by the public to the comen-US -en-US mittee and included enhanced en-US code enforcement, provision en-US of facade grants, enhanced en-US policing, incentives for resien-US-en-US dential development and en-US quarterly meetings with neighen-US-en-US borhood groups. en-US City Manager Jim Chisholm en-US and Volusia County Councilen-US -en-US woman Billie Wheeler both en-US spoke and expressed enthusien-US -en-US asm for progress made to date en-US and positive changes forthen-US-en-US coming. A video was presenten-US -en-US ed at the end showcasing en-US recent developments, such as en-US the Tanger Outlet Mall and en-US Hard Rock Hotel, along with a en-US rendering of what beachside en-US areas could look like in the en-US near future. en-US For the past year, the BRC en-US gathered information, statisen-US -en-US tics, and general data related en-US to the beachside areas in Dayen-US -en-US tona Beach, Daytona Beach en-US Shores and Ormond Beach, a en-US chamber news release stated. en-US Its focus was to develop short en-US and long-term solutions to en-US make this area more viable for en-US residents, businesses, and visien-US -en-US tors as a year-round destinaen-US -en-US tion. en-US At its May 24 meeting, the en-US chamber adopted a position en-US statement encouraging en-US Ormond Beach, Daytona en-US Beach and Daytona Beach en-US Shores to adopt the BRC recen-US -en-US ommendations in helping to en-US enhance this area for visitors en-US and residents.en-US Amy Pyle, a Daytona Beach en-US resident and a member of the en-US Beachside Redevelopment en-US Board, said, The success of en-US these recommendations en-US depends on buy-ins from these en-US cities, especially Daytona en-US Beach. Anybody that witen-US -en-US nessed what that board did en-US would say that Daytona Beach en-US is the core of that, it is the cenen-US -en-US ter and its actually got the en-US worst problems on the en-US beachside. en-USPort Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores A-3 Touch. Taste. Sight. Smell. Sound. All important. The last one, sound, is what Florida State Hearing Aids specializes in.Owner Julie Pruitt opened Florida State Hearing Aids Inc. in 2004 in order to bring a more affordable and wider variety of hearing aids to my clientele, she said. Ms Pruitt is assisted by Patient Care Coordinator Samantha Carpenter whose job is to schedule patients appointments, pre-authorizations, billing, and assist with the cleaning and maintenance of hearing aids. She has been with Florida State Hearing Aids for six years, working an additional eight years with Ms Pruitt before that. When asked what makes her business unique, Ms. Pruitt said, My business gives individual one on one service to every client. You wont walk in two weeks after you purchase your hearing aids and get a random person that doesnt really care about you at all, they dont know you, they didnt test or fit you, and you feel left out in the cold. There is a lot of competition in the newspapers advertising low, low prices on hearing aids, she said. The problem is in the small print. I dont do bait and switch ads. It is insulting to todays consumer. FREE or discounted hearing aids for GEHA, APWU, Federal employees, Empire Plan, Epic and local insurances. We also Veterans. 1808 W. DELAND/DELTONA 255-5151 en-USIf the funding falls short, the en-US mandates still are in place and en-US the districts aen-US lready stretched en-US budget will have to find ways en-US and resources to meet the en-US requirements.en-US The district will focus en-US efforts in four specific areas: en-US Mental health assessments; en-US evidencebased interventions en-US and treatment options; recoven-US -en-US ery services; and coordination en-US plans. en-US A key part of the program en-US will be mental health response en-US teams, including certified en-US addiction counselors and en-US other licensed mental health en-US professionals stationed en-US throughout the district who en-US are tasked with aiding students en-US in crises.en-US With the school shooting en-US tragedies that prompted the en-US bill, districts across the state en-US also have seen a rise in the en-US number of students who have en-US threatened harm, either to en-US themselves or to others, and en-US Volusia County also has seen en-US an increase, she said.en-US Last year, we had 2,500 en-US concerns of harm, meaning en-US 2,500 students have exhibited en-US some type of mental health en-US distress, Dr. Hall said. We en-US have students exhibiting conen-US -en-US cerns that we want to address en-US the needs of so it does not conen-US-en-US tinue to escalate. That is a en-US pretty big number, and these en-US team members will monitor en-US and continue to provide assisen-US -en-US tance.en-US The team will help make en-US connections with resources en-US and link these students to the en-US resources they need, she en-US added.en-US What our hope is, is that en-US we are going to reduce our en-US number of Baker Acts and en-US address the immediate indien-US-en-US vidual needs of the students, en-US Dr. Hall told board members. en-US We believe the mental health en-US response teams (will provide en-US interventions) for those stuen-US -en-US dents. en-US In addition, the mental en-US health teams will play a critical en-US roll in the threat response en-US units the bill requires districts en-US to have in place.en-US In addition to the mental en-US health assistance within en-US schools, the bill appropriates en-US $97.5 million for resource offien-US-en-US cers, although that funding en-US falls short in covering the en-US costs. In addition to the en-US resource officers, or Guarden-US -en-US ians, the bill allocates about en-US $99 million for enhancing en-US schools physical security; en-US gives an additional $28.1 milen-US -en-US lion annually to the Departen-US-en-US ment of Children and Families en-US for more proactive community en-US engagement and crisis prevenen-US -en-US tion; mandates that schools en-US conduct regular active shooter en-US drills; sets up and funds the en-US Marjory Stoneman Douglas en-US High School Public Safety en-US Commission, a 16-member en-US board that will offer ways to en-US improve the school safety sysen-US-en-US tem; creates and funds the en-US marshal program which en-US would train and arm certain en-US school professionals who do en-US not primarily teach; allows en-US certain retired law enforceen-US -en-US ment officers to become en-US school resource officers; and en-US formally prohibits a person en-US from making, posting, or en-US transmitting a threat to conen-US -en-US duct a mass shooting and sets en-US criminal penalties for such en-US actions.en-US This is a very large, comen-US -en-US prehensive bill that has maen-US ny en-US components to it, Dr. Hall en-US said. We do need to embrace en-US this and meet the needs of our en-US students.en-USNen-USo doubt I do love my en-US adopted home, but en-US there are elements that en-US tend to bother me from time to en-US time. en-USRight about now I can tell en-US you I dont care for the en-US summer humidity. Back in en-US1992 when I became a en-US permanent resident, I was lied en-US to. Friends and family told me en-US I would get used to it. I did not en-US and, as far as I can tell, my en-US blood didnt get any thinner en-US either. en-US I hate the beggars lice that en-US stick to my skin and clothes as en-US soon as I venture off a marked en-US path. Not good, but I hate the en-US sand spurs more. Those are en-US the sticky little nuggets that en-US have the ability to hide in your en-US carpet for months only to en-US strike as you stumble along en-US half asleep on a midnight en-US bathroom run. en-US I really dont like our giant en-US cockroaches. (I dont care for en-US the little German variety en-US either.) Oh, by the way, if you en-US are a transplant to the state en-US and refuse to believe you have en-US cockroaches, forget it. Those en-US big shiny things living under en-US your sink are not palmetto en-US bugs. Luckily they wont en-US actually hurt you. There are, en-US however, plenty other things en-US here that will. en-US It is easy to spot the new en-US arrivals to the Sunshine State. en-US They are always complaining en-US about the mosquitoes. More en-US than likely those poor en-US misguided souls have yet to en-US encounter the no-see-ums. en-US Florida mosquitoes are large en-US and stupid and easy to swat. en-US The no-see-ums will set your en-US skin ablaze and make you en-US wish for mosquitoes. Pilgrims en-US to our sub-tropical paradise en-US may call them sand gnats or en-US flying fleas, but no name is en-US sufficient to describe those en-US tiny bloodsuckers. Napalm en-US comes to mind. You may not en-US get that reference until you are en-US engulfed by a cloud of those en-US tiny flamethrowers. en-US In other states, if you pick en-US up a stick that has an ant on it, en-US you may suffer a sting. Here if en-US you get anywhere near a nest en-US of fire ants, you will be en-US partially consumed. There is en-US no such thing as coming in en-US contact with a fire ant and not en-US being bitten. Look for fire ants en-US under a pile of sand that en-US seems to have been refined en-US into some sort of gray powder. en-US Never try to stomp them or en-US spray them. RUN! The responses range en-US from a dirty look to, Oh, hes friendly or She just wants to en-US play, and my favorite, He doesnt bite.en-US All dogs have the potential to bite given the right circumen-US-en-US stances. This is especially true if they feel threatened. en-US Often the owner will halfheartedly call the dog, then stroll en-US over with no sense of urgency or any apology. These encounters en-US are stressful to the point I stay on safe streets and now carry a en-US deterrent spray. en-US I have owned dogs of various breeds and sizes my entire life. en-US Usually, the encounters are with small dogs. Just this past week, en-US a family member was pet sitting and attacked by a pack of chien-US -en-US huahuas and, yes, in the mayhem this person was bitten. en-US I want your dog to be just as safe as mine. Youre on the road working hard in Edgewater? en-US Interesting.en-US Edgewater isnt that large, but youre driving around and en-US around working hard, youre hungry. You need a fast food place en-US to energize -a drive through. A fast in-and-out because youre en-US working hard on the road. You pull up, yell your order at the en-US intercom. Moving forward you pay. They throw a bag in your en-US car and youre off on the road again. en-US Being hungry and hard working and lacking the time to sit in en-US a restaurant; also lacking the ability to appreciate you have a en-US choice asking Edgewater to give you something you want. en-US There is a problem here a new restaurant will not solve. Quit en-US whining.en-USLearning lessonsen-USDuring a recent five-day get-away from New Smyrna Beach to en-US Provincetown, Mass., I thought how much my hometown could en-US learn from my vacation destination.en-US And, then, by extrapolation, other such beach communities en-US along the Atlantic coastline (Bar Harbor, Cape May, Hilton en-US Head, Jekyll Island, Myrtle Beach, Mystic Seaport, Nantucket, en-US Ocean City, Outer Banks, Rehoboth Beach, Sag Harbor, St. en-US Simons Island, Tybee Island, Virginia Beach), including Florida en-US (Amelia Island, Fort Lauderdale, Jax Beach, the Keys, Palm en-US Beach, South Beach, St. Augustine).en-US With the arts, fishing, golfing, horseback riding and surfing en-US already going for us, wed do well to incorporate that which en-US works from other Eastern Seaboard beachside locales. Rather en-US than to imitate, the goal being to adapt an appropriately cohesive en-US plan to replace our heretofore slapdash anything goes approach. en-US As the once quaint charm associated with our area has fallen en-US by the wayside of disproportionate sites and crowded roadways, en-US how smart it would seem to emulate the hard-won lessons en-US learned by others, both to our north and south. Thereby having en-US more opportunity to move beyond fond memories of fleeting en-US times past, toward a realistically pleasant and prosperous future.en-USRepairing a burned out pole lighten-USI called to have a light bulb replaced at a very bad curve on our en-US street. en-US The person told me it would take three weeks. Three weeks en-US came and went. I called a second time. They said they replaced en-US it, but they replaced the pole, nine houses away. It was the wrong en-US pole. They told me there was no pole at the location, but it has en-US been there for 27 years. en-US I finally got a young lady, Beverly Wells, who took the time to en-US check the maps and found the number for the pole and had en-US someone change it the next day. Hats off to Beverly and we can en-US relax a little with the terrible curve on the street.en-USTomatoes are reden-USWould someone explain to the present generation that pink en-US tomatoes are not ripe.en-US Tomatoes, to be ripe, have to be red. Especially restaurant en-US owners, have you ever bought tomato sauce that was pink, did en-US you? en-USMayor must run the cityen-USHopefully in the upcoming election for new mayor in New en-US Smyrna Beach, we will not select a bread man, a restaurateur or en-US even an insurance man. en-US We are looking for someone professional, perhaps retired, en-US who can devote time to running the city, rather than turn the en-US reigns of management over to the city manager. We have seen en-US what has happened when that has gone on the last few years, en-US when the mayor has been able to do nothing and cares about en-US nothing. Lets be judicious in who we select as our new mayor. en-USGive me back my walleten-USI had my Captain Jack wallet stolen while on Votran recently. en-US Votran, you have done nothing to help me, and I really resent en-US this whole thing. I dont like you any more Votran. I think you en-US deserve further action from me and I am thinking of pursuing it. en-US I havent gotten one phone call back. This is en-US all very discouraging. The people who live here cant go to the en-US parks they want to, and the people from out of town are noticing en-US it. en-USRefreshing honestyen-USThe other night while enjoying a beautiful evening at the outen-US-en-US door setting of One Daytona, I witnessed something extraordien-US-en-US nary in this day and time. en-US A young man of around 18 to 20 years of age approached us en-US and asked if we had lost $25, which he had in his hand. We said en-US no and watched as he went around to everyone outside Jeremien-US -en-US ahs Italian Ice and asked the same question. en-US He was with his family and was possibly of Middle Eastern en-US descent as the women in his party all wore head scarves. When en-US he couldnt find anyone who claimed they lost the money, he en-US turned it in to the workers at Jeremiahs.en-US What an honest young man. I hesitate to think my own chilen-US -en-US dren would not have been so honest as to turn the money in en-US using the old adage of finders, keepers. How refreshing. en-US A nice gesture from the ice cream shop would have been to en-US give this young man a free cone for his honesty. en-USIn response to: Enough fast fooden-USNo, I really dont think you get it either. en-US The rant is not about what a few retirees that dont like change en-US want to decide what everybody else gets. Burger King is the most en-US awful place ever and I dont want a sub or doughnuts everyday. en-US I, among a lot of others in Edgewater, want some better choicen-US -en-US es, plain and simple. en-USA8 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USYen-USouve probably heard me, en-US and other financial en-US advisers, tout the benefits en-US of postponing Social Security.en-USThe biggest reason, of en-US course, is more money! If you en-US take Social Security as early as en-US possible, at age 62, you will get en-US far less in your monthly en-US benefit check than if you en-US collect at your full retirement en-US age, or continue to wait, and en-US file at age 70. en-US However, if you wait to en-US collect later, you miss out on en-US all the checks you could have en-US received over the years. It will en-US take time, probably many en-US years (I estimate 12 to 14 en-US years), to catch up to the en-US total money you could have en-US had if you collected sooner. en-US Here are six more reasons for en-US taking Social Security before en-US full retirement. en-US 1. Job loss. Whether you en-US were laid off, fired or downen-US -en-US sized, a job loss at age 62 or en-US older can be a significant en-US blow. Finding employment at en-US an older age can be difficult. If en-US youve tried to re-enter the en-US workforce without success, en-US you might want to consider en-US collecting Social Security en-US early.en-US 2. Health reasons. No en-US surprises here. As we age, we en-US tend to have more health en-US issues. If your job consisted of en-US heavy lifting, for example, en-US your body might not be up to en-US the task anymore. Standing or en-US sitting for eight hours a day en-US may be a challenge, or you en-US might have other ailments en-US that limit your ability to work. en-US 3. Part-time work. Maybe en-US you have not been able to find en-US full-time employment, you en-US are phasing out of a full-time en-US career, or you are caring for an en-US elderly parent. You might en-US need extra money to suppleen-US -en-US ment your part-time income. en-US 4. Awaiting other assets. For en-US those who expect income en-US from another source down en-US the road, taking Social en-US Security early can bridge the en-US gap between a previous career en-US and a future pension or en-US inheritance, for example. en-US 5. Family history. This en-US could possibly be the best en-US reason of all for taking Social en-US Security early. Maybe your en-US family doesnt have the en-US longevity gene, and everyen-US -en-US one in your family passes en-US away in their 60s or 70s. If that en-US were true in my family, I en-US would take my benefits as en-US soon as possible!en-US 6. Will it be there? For many en-US years, you maen-US y have heard en-US about Social Security runen-US -en-US ning out of money. I doubt en-US this will happen; too many en-US people rely on these benefits en-US for a major portion of their en-US income in retirement. If you, en-US however, are concerned the en-US funds you paid into the system en-US for 40 or more years wont be en-US there in the future, it might be en-US better for you to collect your en-US benefits now, rather than to en-US continue to wait and worry.en-US All six of these scenarios are en-US legitimate reasons to collect SS en-US benefits early. A good way to en-US find out what is right for your en-US situation would be to sit down en-US with an experienced adviser. en-US Make sure to ask if the adviser en-US uses software to help deteren-US -en-US mine the most appropriate age en-US for you to collect Social en-US Security benefits. With that en-US information, he or she can en-US help guide you. en-US David D. I am en-US constantly opening the door en-US and condiments come flying en-US off the door shelf or small en-US bottles are slipping between en-US the holders in the door and en-US open spaces in the bottom en-US rack and fall to the floor and en-US break. en-US And how about those en-US plastic containers that berries en-US come in? They never close en-US properly, and when they fall en-US on the floor berries roll en-US everywhere.en-US Get the picture? en-US Just for the record, there is a en-US proper procedure for storing en-US food safely. Yes, safely because en-US someone could get sick from en-US cross-contamination. I bet I en-US have your attention now!en-US Unfortunately household en-US refrigerators are not designed en-US like commercial units, which en-US have no door shelves or en-US vegetable crisper or egg en-US storage compartment in the en-US door. Instead, commercial en-US coolers have several open en-US shelves, which are adjustable. en-US Food must be stored in a en-US certain pattern to keep it safe, en-US which is different than what en-US we do aen-US t home. en-US On the top shelf, store en-US ready-to-eat food, produce, en-US dairy, cheese and cooked left en-US overs. The second shelf is for en-US fresh seafood (if you buy it en-US fresh), if not, keep it frozen en-US until time to use. The third en-US shelf is for raw ground meats en-US and the bottom shelf for raw en-US poultry. Eggs should stay in en-US the cartons they came in to en-US ensure freshness and safety.en-US Storing in this manner may en-US be difficult at times. Always en-US wrap food properly and store en-US in plastic bags or containers to en-US avoid the transfer of juices en-US from one food to another. en-US That is the key. Buy a good en-US refrigerator thermometer to en-US check temperatures so food is en-US in the safe zone of 41degrees en-US or lower.en-US Oh, and those door en-US shelves buy some plastic en-US containers at the dollar stores en-US that fit in the shelf, that way en-US nothing will fall through the en-US bottom. Hope this all helps. en-US Now lets eat.en-USChicken Pasta en-US Primaveraen-USIngredientsen-US 1 package frozen vegetables en-US mix (broccoli, cauliflower, and en-US carrots). Cook over medium heat en-US for 1-2 minutes.en-US Add on en-USe cup half and half en-US (optional) and 4 cups milk en-US slowly, whisking continuously en-US to remove all lumps. If roux is en-US too thick, a little more milk en-US may be added. en-USB-6 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shoresen-USWen-USe are fortunate en-US enough in Florida to en-US be able to fish en-US year-round. en-USWe are less fortunate to be en-US bound by a myriad of rules en-US and seasons. These days most en-US of us have a phone that will en-US pull up Florida fishing regs in en-US an instant. Thats great, but a en-US little personalen-US knowledge en-US would also be a big help to en-US keep us out of trouble with the en-US law. en-US Aside from our usual en-US catches, the Sunshine State has en-US plenty other species to liven en-US up our seafoen-US od take. Bay en-US scallop season is happening en-US right now and continues until en-US Sept. 24. Those are taken by en-US snorkeling in the warm, en-US shallow waters of the Gulf of en-US Mexico. My two preferred en-US spots are at Steinhatchee and en-US Crystal River. The daily limit en-US is 2 gallons per person. (If you en-US have not eaten scallops that en-US were caught that same day en-US you have not lived.) en-US The spiny lobster two-day en-US mini season is like a diving en-US holiday down in the Keys. en-US This year on July 25 and 26, en-US more than 30,000 divers or en-US snorkelers will descend on en-US south Florida to take part. en-US The limit is six per day per en-US person. A legal lobster must en-US have a carapace (back) of en-US more than 3 inches and you en-US must have a measuring device en-US with you in the water at all en-US times. en-US Back when I was a regular en-US at the mini season I would en-US enjoy lobster and eggs for en-US breakfast, and steak and en-US lobster for dinner, and still en-US bring home 40 or so dependen-US -en-US ing on the size of my crew. en-US Locally deep water SCUBA en-US divers bring in fewer, but en-US always much larger ones than en-US are taken in the Keys. en-US I dont recommend you en-US taking oysters here, but we do en-US have more stone crabs than en-US most realize. That season runs en-US from Oct. 15 to May 15. Blue en-US crabs may be taken all year en-US and the limit is 10 gallons per en-US person per day. (Good luck en-US with that.) Shrimp also may en-US be caught all year and that en-US limit is five gallons per vessel en-US a day. (The shrimp are en-US running right now in Port en-US Orange.)en-US In Volusia, most of us seek en-US the more finny targets with en-US red drum at the top of our list. en-US We are allowed one red en-US between 18 and 27 inches to en-US be legal. My Louisiana en-US buddies always laugh when I en-US tell them that and ask: What en-US can a Cajun do with one fish? en-US I have no answer. (They can en-US keep five.) en-US State regulations for spotted en-US sea trout are four per day en-US locally with a length between en-US 15 and 20 inches. We do get to en-US keep one over 20, but my en-US Cajun friends are allowed 25 en-US per day, beginning at 12 en-US inches. That does not seem en-US fair does it? en-US Black drum must be en-US between 10 and 24 inches and en-US you may keep five.
