en-USCouncil waives transition, en-US county manager goneen-USJust one week after James Dinneen announced he en-US would be leaving his post as Volusia County Managen-US-en-US er in January, the Volusia County Council voted 6-1 en-US to approve his request to waive the six-month transien-US -en-US tional period in his contract and leave immediately.en-US Several county residents, along with Volusia en-US County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, Councilwoman en-US Heather Post and others spoke at an emotional en-US council meeting June 19, calling for Mr. Dinneens en-US immediate dismissal from what they called a tenure en-US filled with malfeasance, insubordination and lack of en-US honesty. en-US His early release from his contract, en-US approved 5-1 by council with Ms. Post casten-US -en-US ing the only vote to terminate based on malen-US-en-US feasance and insubordination, ended his 12 en-US years with the county June 22 and provided en-US a severance, unpaid leave and benefits payout en-US of more than $405,000. Deputy County Manager en-US George Recktenwald will serve as interim county en-US manager.en-US (Mr. Dinneen) came to me and said he would en-US like to be relieved. He is obligated to give us six en-US months, Volusia County Chair Ed Kelly told the en-US packed council chambers while protesters held up en-US signs en-US calling for the council en-US to fire Mr. Dinneen. In addition to that, en-US I en-US didnt want to leave the county in a position without en-US a county manager, so I asked (Mr. Recktenwald) if en-US the council would approve it, if he would serve as en-USTo be perfectly clear, thrift en-US stores, no matter where they en-US are, rely on donations from en-US goodhearted people to be en-US able to resell the items to en-US benefit any number of causen-US-en-US es.en-US Still, garbage dumpsters en-US contain some of those hearten-US-en-US felt donations.en-US Dolores Hozman, 80, and en-US Harvey Hozman, 74, live in en-US Port Orange and have a en-US small, but beautifully decoen-US -en-US rated, home. However, their en-US clothes, dishes, towels, quilts, en-US paintings, knick-knacks, en-US stuffed animals, small tables, en-US and many other items were en-US obtained from Port Orange en-US dumpsters.en-US Recently, the Hozmans en-US said they donated two boxes en-US and one bag of clothing to en-US the Halifax Health-Hospice en-US Resale Shop in Port Orange, en-US only to find the items in the en-US dumpster later the same day. en-US Some of them even had en-US the tags still on them, Ms. en-US Hozman said. I wouldnt en-US give anything away that is en-US stained or ripped. He (Haren-US -en-US vey) doesnt dig in the trash. en-US He just takes what he sees on en-US the top. People are poor and en-US cant afford these things. It is en-US ridiculous to throw them en-US away. en-US Mr. Hozman admits to en-US being a lifelong scavenger. en-US He also is aware he may be en-US guilty of trespassing when he en-US acquires these items. en-US There are beautiful shirts, en-US pants, he said. They wait en-US until you pull away and then en-US they just take them and put en-US them in the dumpster. en-US Mr. Hozman was upset his en-US wife spent a lot of time preen-US-en-US paring the clothes to be en-US donated only to find them in en-USWaste not, want not excess en-USof donations en-USCondo en-US pioneer en-US hits the en-US century en-US marken-USTurning 100 years old en-US would be a landmark occaen-US -en-US sion for anyone. en-US For longtime Daytona en-US Beach Shores developer en-US Edwin W. Peck Sr., it is just en-US one more accomplishment in en-US a remarkable life.en-US Mr. Peck turned 100 June en-US 21. More than 160 family en-US members and friends came en-US from across the country to en-US join the celebration, which en-US took place at Ashley Condoen-US -en-US minium (named after one of en-US Mr. Pecks granddaughters). en-US At Riverside Pavilion, busien-US -en-US ness associates and friends en-US attended yet another celebraen-US-en-US tion in his honor.en-US Mr. Pecks company has en-US developed 25 condominiums en-US in the area and another five en-US in other Florida locations. en-US More than 2,000 condo en-US apartments have been develen-US -en-US oped and sold by Ed and en-US Hilda Peck, their family and en-US agents, having a major en-US impact on the Volusia Counen-US-en-US ty economy.en-US Mr. Pecks wife, Hilda, a en-US former Miss United States, en-US died in 2011. When the couen-US -en-US ple was young, they would en-US come from their home in en-US Gainesville to vacation in en-US Daytona Beach with their en-US two children, Sherry and en-US Edwin Jr. en-US We loved (this area) so en-US much that Hilda came up en-US with the idea to build a en-US condo with six units, keeping en-US one to live in, Mr. Peck said.en-US They went to Miami to get en-US ideas, he said, then came en-US back to Daytona Beach en-US Shores and bought a 300-foot en-US lot in 1969. They paid $400 en-US per linear foot. (The same lot en-US would sell for about $17,000 en-US per linear foot today, he en-US said.) They had an architect en-US working on the plans, but en-US found out the price for the en-US land was too high ($120,000) en-US at that time for only six units. en-US So they had the architect en-US make plans for 61 units.en-US This became Surfside en-US Club, the first beachfront en-US condominium in the Daytoen-US-en-US na area. They sold the majoren-US -en-US ity of the units before it was en-US even built. Mr. Peck said the en-US bank didnt even know what en-US a condominium was at that en-US time; they had to go to en-US Photo courtesy of Peck familyen-USEd Peck, one of the pioneers of the beachfront condo market in the Daytoen-US -en-US na Beach area, recently celebrated his 100th birthday. en-USSchools, en-US hospitals en-US ink en-US pacten-USVolusia County Schools and en-US Florida Hospital inked a five-en-US year, $2 million partnership, en-US the first of its kind in the state en-US for health education.en-US At a special meeting June 19 en-US at Deltona High School, Voluen-US-en-US sia County School Board en-US members voted unanimously en-US June 19 at a special meeting at en-US Deltona High School to en-US approve the program. en-USA2 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USthe garbage. en-US If you park behind Hospice en-US (Thrift Store), you will see en-US people taking stuff out (of the en-US dumpster) all day long, he en-US said. I used to get things from en-US Epiphany (Thrift Store dumpen-US-en-US ster) all the time. Goodwill en-US does not do it. I would like to en-US have the thrift stores and the en-US different discount stores en-US instead of throwing the stuff en-US out, find another organization en-US to take it, to donate to the en-US homeless people, homeless en-US families, to people who really en-US need it rather than just throw en-US it out. Call an organization to en-US come out and take it to the en-US homeless people. Women with en-US children, they can use that en-US stuff.en-US He added After Christmas, en-US I have been finding on top of en-US these dumpsters behind these en-US thrift stores, even these maren-US -en-US kets, they would throw out en-US (artificial) Christmas trees, en-US lights, decorations. In the en-US month of January if you had a en-US semi-truck you could fill the en-US whole truck. Everything is en-US good, everything has worth. en-US There is nothing wrong with en-US it. People just dont care, rather en-US than give it to an organization en-US that can use it, they throw it en-US out. en-US Tangela Boyd, Public Relaen-US-en-US tions Specialist for Halifax en-US Health (which includes four en-US hospice thrift stores) said en-US donated items that either dont en-US work, are stained, have odors en-US or are not deemed to be salen-US -en-US able or fashionable, are tossed. en-US She added people may be taken-US -en-US ing items and refurbishing en-US them.en-US We are selling merchandise en-US and some of that is subjective en-US to what you sell and what you en-US think will sell, Ms. Boyd said. en-US We kind of know what will en-US sell in our shops and what en-US wont. We welcome the donaen-US -en-US tions and we would love for en-US people to keep donating. We en-US do need them as they are en-US needed for our shops.en-US She added, We dont have a en-US mechanism in place to sort en-US them out and take them to en-US another entity that possibly en-US can use them. I will share this en-US information and see if our en-US leadership with hospice would en-US be interested in looking at en-US some additional things we can en-US do.en-US Patricia Wright, the new en-US thrift store manager for Epiphen-US -en-US any Catholic Church in Port en-US Orange, said, We try our best en-US to recycle everything that can en-US be recycled. Everything has en-US value and each person sees it en-US differently what the value is. en-US Its perception. We can only en-US recycle and sell as much as our en-US store can contain. What you en-US may think is salable we may en-US know is not salable. en-US Donations are our asset, en-US that is our revenue, the en-US 14-year thrift shop veteran en-US said. We depend on donaen-US-en-US tions to thrive here. We ceren-US -en-US tainly want people to continue en-US to donate and have a good en-US heart when they do it and realen-US-en-US ize it is up to us what actually en-US goes onto the showroom en-US floor.en-US One of her goals is to not en-US add to the county dump, Ms. en-US Wright said. Epiphany does en-US have missions we send clothes en-US to. We are always trying to en-US find other avenues to use the en-US product that people give us. en-US Thrift shops need continuen-US -en-US ous donations, because they en-US usually dont have storage en-US space, she said. Where are we en-US going to store it while we are en-US waiting for that consumer to en-US get it?en-US Sarah Minch, manager of en-US the Save the Animals Store in en-US Port Orange, We have a clearen-US -en-US ance section just for that reaen-US-en-US son, so nothing gets thrown en-US out unless it is chipped or broen-US -en-US ken. We like to make sure we en-US put everything on the floor so en-US this way it has a chance to go en-US out for 50 cents, 10 cents. We en-US dont like to throw anything en-US away that will help an animal en-USin need. We help a great deal en-US of animals in the area and we en-US want to make sure we continen-US-en-US ue that. en-US Other businesses throw en-US away usable items too, such as en-US large department stores or en-US dollar stores. en-US The company policy of en-US Waste Pro, which empties a lot en-US of those area dumpsters, is en-US that until items are in the actuen-US -en-US al possession of Waste Pro, en-US what happens to items in the en-US dumpsters falls on the owners en-US of the property. 1649 Mason Avenue | Daytona Beach 386.274.3269CUSTOM PRODUCTS AT RETAIL PRICESFree in home estimates and years of experience to help you nd the perfect window treatments TEXTILE VALUESDraperies & Blindswww.TextileValuesDraperies.com Monday~Friday 10am-5pm 137 Bay St., Daytona Beach Tues-Sat 9:30am-5pm 386.257.2662 2017 2017 C H O I C E R E A D E R S SouthernHomeFurniture.com Largest used furniture showroom in the county NO DESIGN FEES Specializing in: Area Rugs Cabinetry Flooring Furniture Custom Window Treatments Upholstery Bedding Wall Coverings Binds & Shutters Accessories20% 50% OFF ALL IN-STORE ACCESSORIES! 3550 S Ridgewood Ave., (US #1) Port Orange, FL 32129 M-F 10-6, Sat 10-4, Sun CLOSED 386.761.0204 www.DavidWaller.com 677-5355ALWAYS BUYINGCURRENCY GOLD & SILVER JEWELRY 10K, 14K, 18K CIVIL WAR COLLECTIBLES SWORDS KNIVES WHOLE ESTATES OR ONE COIN WATCH BATTERIES & EXPERT JEWELRY REPAIR1808 RIDGEWOOD AVE HOLLY HILL 32117A.N.A. en-USPort Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores A-3 A en-USt some point you have en-US probably considered en-US having your DNA tested. en-USAfter, all it is a big part of en-US human nature to be curious en-US about our ancestors. There is en-US something satisfying about en-US discovering the intricacies of en-US our own make up. Unlike en-US those who think they have en-US lived several past lives and en-US once lived as Alexander The en-US Great or Helen Of Troy, DNA en-US testing is based on hard facts.en-US When this DNA thing en-US became popular, I for one did en-US not buy into the act of taking en-US every DNA result as nothing en-US less than the absolute truth. en-US Rapidly DNA testing became en-US irrefutable fact in court cases en-US and many criminals who en-US otherwise would have gone en-US free were jailed. At times, en-US cases were decided solely on en-US that testing and still are.en-US What bothered me from the en-US beginning was not the science, en-US but the people who were en-US performing it. Any time en-US people are involved, there is en-US room for error. Sometimes en-US accidentally, but lately it seems en-US more and more instances of en-US wrongdoing by lab technicians en-US are happening.en-US Any time there is a human en-US element involved there is a en-US possibility of error or outright en-US fraud. Now it turns out en-US samples have been mishanen-US -en-US dled and mislabeled all across en-US the world. In one instance, it en-US was determined two people en-US working in the same lab had en-US managed to mix their own en-US DNA into thousands of en-US samples. In one case a lab en-US worker left a random sample en-US at a crime scene in order to get en-US her boyfriend off the hook for en-US murder. Far fetched? Maybe en-US but It would be naive to en-US believe that those things wont en-US happen. en-US In Texas, the Dallas testing en-US facility has been shut down en-US after it was discovered en-US hundreds of cases may have en-US been bungled due to faulty en-US DNA testing. In a state where en-US there is more executions than en-US any other, you would think en-US accuracy would be foremost. en-US Their problems go all the way en-US back to 1992 and are now en-US being re-examined. en-US In Australia, a man went to en-US court on a murder charge en-US when his DNA was found at en-US the crime scene. With such en-US fool proof evidence, his en-US attorney told him to plead en-US guilty and try for a lesser en-US sentence. Eventually it was en-US discovered he and a suspect en-US with the same name had their en-US DNA mixed up at the lab and en-US he was released. He spent over en-US a decade in the pokey. en-US There is a problem with en-US DNA when innocent people en-US who chose to be tested to en-US discover more about their en-US family tree, wind up as police en-US evidence in a criminal case. en-US That happened in California en-US when authorities tapped into en-US an ancestry data base and en-US found relatives of the suspect en-US that had been dubbed The en-US Golden State Killer. That en-US resulted in the capture of a en-US 72-year-old former police en-US officer. en-US In another case, a popular en-US ancestry website was hacked en-US and 92 million customers had en-US their DNA in the hands of en-US criminal investigators. Look, en-US when you put your DNA onto en-US the Net, which is what you are en-US doing when en-US you buy into one en-US of those ancestry sites, you en-US open yourself up for all sorts en-US of problems. en-US Right now cold case en-US detectives are subpoenaing en-US those companies for their en-US records so they can search for en-US a distant match that will put en-US them on the right track. We all en-US want the criminals to be en-US caught but what if your DNA en-US results in a relative going to en-US jail on a false charge? It could en-US happen. Think long and hard en-US before putting your DNA out en-US there. This en-US may mean improving quality of life. On the other hand, a move en-US forward can take one onto a railroad crossing in the path of an en-US oncoming train. A step forward may send one hurtling over a en-US cliff. en-US So it may be seen that progress, in a positive or negative en-US direction, is indeed in the eye or pocket of the beholder. en-USVote to protect quality of lifeen-USPolitical Action Groups will be backing some New Smyrna en-US Beach mayor and commissioner candidates with unlimited en-US funds.en-US These PACs do not care what impact development has on us. en-US They want only to have nonstop building of chain stores and en-US restaurants and apartments and townhouses and minimum en-US wage jobs.en-US They dont care about our traffic or our environment. en-USA8 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USIen-USd like to remind my readers en-US that I love to get your en-US questions, so keep them en-US coming!en-USI heard from Susan, a en-US woman in New Smyrna en-US Beach, who is trying to decide en-US whether or not to liquidate en-US her Roth IRA. en-US This is what I know about en-US Susan. She is 65, recently en-US retired, married, has Individuen-US -en-US al Retirement Accounts and a en-US $20,000 Roth IRA, which shes en-US owned for more than five en-US years; she and her husband en-US own a home worth $250,000 en-US and they have a mortgage of en-US $100,000. Her problem, en-US however, is she doesnt have en-US any cash in case of emergenen-US -en-US cies. en-US I commend Susan for en-US planning ahead! You might en-US know from my previous en-US columns, I am a big believer in en-US maintaining a hardy emergenen-US -en-US cy account. You never know en-US when the car will break down, en-US the refrigerator will quit, or en-US youll be required to meet en-US large deductibles not covered en-US by your insurance policies. en-US My recommendation could en-US be for, or against, liquidation en-US of Susans Roth account. A en-US Roth can serve as a suppleen-US -en-US mental emergency fund en-US without liquidating it, as long en-US as the cash is not needed en-US immediately. Should an en-US emergency arise, and Susan en-US can wait a week or two to en-US receive her funds, the Roth en-US doesnt really have to be en-US converted to cash beforehand.en-US However, and this is a big en-US however, if the Roth money is en-US invested in the stock market, en-US the value of the Roth account en-US can, and will, fluctuate. en-US It wasnt too many years ago en-US the stock market plunged 40 en-US percent. If that were to en-US happen when Susan needed en-US money from her Roth en-US account, the current $20,000 en-US value could sink to just en-US $12,000! If this potential en-US volatility is a concern to en-US Susan, I would recommend en-US she liquidate part or all of the en-US account and deposit the en-US money in her bank. She wont en-US be earning much interest, but en-US she will feel more confident en-US the full amount will be there if en-US she needs it. Plus, she will en-US have quick and easy access to en-US the funds. en-US Another option for Susan en-US might be to consider the en-US equity in her home for en-US potential cash. She could en-US apply for a traditional en-US refinance, a reverse mortgage en-US loan or reverse mortgage line en-US of credit. She would still have en-US to pay homeowners insurance, en-US property taxes and home en-US maintenance, but she would en-US gain access to the additional en-US cash these products could en-US afford. en-US Whats great about Susans en-US situation is that she doesnt en-US have to take money from her en-US regular IRAs, because she has en-US other options available. Those en-US IRA accounts can continue to en-US work hard for her until she en-US absolutely needs to pull from en-US them, or until she has to take en-US required minimum distribuen-US -en-US tions at age 70-1/2. en-US It was good to hear from en-US Susan. en-USA12 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USI en-USmet Capt. Brad Kayholm in en-US New Smyrna Beach at the en-US Outrigger boat ramp right at en-US 5:30 a.m. en-USNow that may sound en-US insignificant, but I had to en-US leave my home in Ormond-en-US by-the-Sea at 4:45 a.m. That en-US requires a dedication that only en-US a few anglers will understand. en-US As I pulled up in the dark, en-US sure enough Brad and his dad, en-US Rick, were sitting in the en-US already launched boat. I was en-US pleased to see Rick along for I en-US knew he had been battling en-US serious health problems. Big en-US Daddy Kayholm said his only en-US sacrifice would be to not fish en-US on this trip. He was along for en-US the company and spectacle en-US that usually happens when we en-US three get together. en-US A couple miles down the en-US Indian River and we slowed so en-US Capt. Brad could view his new en-US Hummingbird Helex fish en-US finder. The thing looks like a en-US 16-inch color TV, and soon en-US Brad saw what he was looking en-US for. No anchoring on this en-US modern vessel. The big en-US remote control trolling motor en-US would automatically hold us en-US in one place despite the en-US rapidly moving tide. en-US We baited with four-inch en-US live croakers and I scored en-US first. A hard hit made me en-US believe I had a red drum, but en-US it turned out to be a huge sail en-US catfish. As it was released, we en-US couldnt help but admire the en-US long fins of the big fish. It en-US probably went about 7 pounds en-US with a head as big as a large en-US grapefruit. en-US It was right at dawn when I en-US hooked up with a large red. en-US This fight would be monuen-US -en-US mental. Four long runs with en-US me only able to hang on and en-US hope the reels drag would not en-US seize up before the monster en-US began doing that telltale head en-US shake. en-US And what a head it was! en-US Brad put the net under the big en-US red drum, but only the head en-US would fit. Now understand, en-US Capt. Brad is a full-sized guy, en-US but for just a second I was not en-US sure he would be strong en-US enough to get the thing into en-US the boat. en-US You may recall a couple en-US years back, Brad and his en-US Wham Bam Charters put me en-US on my all-time largest red fish en-US at 44 inches in length. This en-US one was 47-inches long and, en-US although we didnt weigh it, en-US we all agreed it had to go en-US about 35 pounds. After posing en-US with the big fish, I kissed it en-US and set it free. en-US After that we each caught en-US more very large sail cats and en-US then I was on with a red larger en-US than the first. The fight just en-US lasted too long (for me) and en-US the hook finally pulled free. en-US Could it have been a 50-inchen-US -en-US er? Ill never know, but it felt en-US like it. en-US My next hookup was with a en-US stingray that was at least 30 en-US inches wide. That big flattie en-US went to the bottom and just en-US stayed there. It became a test en-US of wills and equipment, but I en-US won. Just then Im thinking is en-US everything oversized in this en-US place?en-US Folks, I have often told you en-US about young Brad Kayholm en-US and his Wham Bam Charters. en-US As we all know, fishing is en-US unpredictable, but Capt. Brad en-US is as consistent as any angler I en-US have ever fished with. To get en-US in on this kind of fun, give en-US him a call at (386) 314-8553 en-US and get on his waiting list. The en-US next time he gets on such a en-US fishing bonanza he will give en-US you a call to join him. I have en-US been fishing for red drum for en-US more than 60 years and he has en-US put me on my best ones twice en-US in recent years. Amazing! Call en-US Capt. They were no en-US greens used at all. It has been en-US Americanized throughout the en-US years. en-US Salad comes from the Latin en-US word herba salta or salted en-US herbs. The Romans would eat en-US greens with a dressing en-US containing a lot of salt. Salads en-US have a rich history. Each en-US generation of civilizations en-US have left their mark on this en-US corner of the culinary world, en-US however, through the ages, the en-US salad remained greens or en-US cooked vegetables with large en-US amounts of oil, a little vinegar, en-US and seasoning. They were en-US served wet. en-US It wasnt until the early part en-US of the 20th century that en-US Americans brought the lowly en-US salad to great heights with the en-US development of salad dressen-US -en-US ings. Commercial dressing en-US and sauces were not available en-US until Joe Marzetti, a restaurant en-US owner in 1896, began serving en-US a variety of dressings to his en-US customers. He eventually en-US when on to bottle these en-US dressings and sell them to the en-US public. Richard Hellmann, a en-US deli owner in New York, began en-US selling his blue ribbon en-US mayonnaise to the public after en-US a strong consumer demand.en-US The American public took it en-US from there. Ambrosia, carrot, en-US chicken, shrimp, Cobb, cole en-US slaw, potato salad, Waldorf en-US and, of course, the great en-US milestone in salad history en-US Jell-O salads! In 1930, lime en-US Jell-O was introduced, which en-US triggered decades of molded en-US salads. I am afraid I still think en-US of Jell-O as a dessert. en-US Salads are popular because en-US they are healthy and easy to en-US prepare. They have evolved en-US into an appetizer, entre or en-US dessert. The ingredients can en-US be anything you want them to en-US be to mix together with the en-US appropriate dressing. I love to en-US take leftovers and make salads. en-US So, with that in mind, I have en-US included some simple dressing en-US recipes you can make at home en-US to add to anything you want to en-US mix together, well almost en-US anything.
