Lets face it, if you get en-US out of bed at 5 a.m., meatloaf en-US and mashed potatoes at 4 p.m. en-US are not so far out of the en-US question. en-US Still, somehow the early bird en-US special has faded into near en-US obscurity. Oh sure, fine eating en-US establishments remain that en-US offer better prices for early en-US customers, but even they will en-US tell you these days the early en-US bird does not do the business en-US it once did. What has hapen-US -en-US pened? Do the elderly now en-US stay up later? I dont think so. en-US Do they have more money? en-US Probably, but the price of en-US eating out has managed to en-US keep well ahead of any inflated en-US savings accounts. What is it en-US then?en-US I believe it has to fall at the en-US feet of the baby boomers, who en-US are really our first rock 'n' roll en-US generation. That group often en-US refuses to admit their age, and en-US going out early in order to en-US take advantage of a bargain is en-US a sad reminder we have en-US become senior citizens.en-US I remember the time my en-US sister, Linda, came out of en-US McDonalds fuming. When I en-US asked her what happened, she en-US told me her cup of coffee had en-US cost her only 35 cents. My en-US usually demure sister was en-US cussing a blue streak because en-US the girl at the counter had en-US automatically given her a en-US senior discount. At the time, en-US she was only around 50. en-US Most of us who are of a en-US certain age can remember the en-US first time we were put in her en-US position. That first senior en-US discount can be a tough one, en-US but we soon get over it and en-US seek the senior bargains en-US whenever and wherever we en-US can. Cash has to win out over en-US vanity every time. en-US Still, I am a bit befuddled at en-US the passing of the popularity en-US of the early bird special. I en-US remember seeing groups of en-US senior citizens occupying the en-US same tables night after night. en-US They would use their favorite en-US restaurant as a meeting place en-US and, as each arrived, greetings en-US would ring out just like en-US Norm on Cheers. en-US What has changed? Are the en-US baby boomers just not as en-US friendly as their predecessors? en-US Naw, that cant be right. After en-US all, the early bird specials have en-US been around since the 1920s. en-US It is in our nature to try and en-US save a buck here and there. en-US Remember the blue plate en-US special? Now, early bird drinks en-US in the guise of happy hour en-US may have taken over for en-US dinner bargains. Many bars en-US offer lower-priced beer and en-US well drinks before a certain en-US time. en-US Luckily the early bird en-US special lives on in many local en-US establishments. In Daytona en-US Beach, the Chart House has en-US one as does Marios in en-US Ormond Beach. In Port en-US Orange, The Malibu Beach en-US Grill offers bargains for those en-US out early and in Ormond-by-en-US the-Sea, Alfies does as well. en-US Of course those are only a few, en-US but I offer those just to remind en-US you a good meal at a bargain en-US can still be had as long as you en-US can live with being branded a en-US senior citizen.en-US Dan Smith is on the board of en-US directors for the Ormond Beach en-US Historical Society and The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association and is the author en-US of two books, The Worlds en-US Greatest Beach and I Swear en-US the Snook Drowned. We are in a new age. Older people are en-US trying to learn the computer. Give the jobs to the younger peoen-US-en-US ple who know the computers. Let the older librarians retire. en-US Maybe turn the library into a teaching center on computers en-US and how to use smart phones. A lot of young people know the en-US computers and are looking for a job.en-US These librarians dont want to be there. I asked a question, en-US and the librarian didnt know the answer. They are certainly bringing the blight to en-US S.R. 44. While en-US you could joke about it being en-US too hot to wear a suit every en-US day in East Central Florida, en-US and who needs more lawyers en-US anyway, those suits are a vital en-US part of any local economy. en-US Volusia has always suffered en-US because of its proximity to the en-US Orlando area with white-colen-US -en-US lar jobs paying higher there. en-US So, you may know a lot of en-US professionals, but ask how en-US many of them commute out of en-US the county every day. en-US The banking industry has en-US been streamlining for the past en-US few years now. en-USA8 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USI en-USwas watching the news the en-US other night and was en-US surprised to hear one of our en-US Florida tax collection offices is en-US now accepting Bitcoin for the en-US payment of auto tags and en-US licenses. en-USPredictably the reporter en-US asked some everyday people en-US what Bitcoin was and they en-US didnt have a clue!en-US Honestly its a hard concept en-US to grasp. Bitcoin isnt a en-US physical, tangible item. It is a en-US form of electronic cash speen-US -en-US cifically, cryptocurrency en-US created on the Internet.en-US There are other cryptocuren-US -en-US rencies, such as Ethereum en-US and Litecoin, but Bitcoin is en-US probably the most recogen-US -en-US nized. Its actually been en-US around for several years now. en-US You can buy, sell or trade en-US Bitcoin, and, of course, in en-US some situations, you can use en-US it to make purchases. en-US Bitcoins value has fluctuaten-US -en-US ed wildly since its inception. en-US At the time I am writing this en-US column, the cost of one en-US Bitcoin is $8,261!en-US Another important en-US concept to understand when en-US talking about cryptocurrenen-US -en-US cies is whats called blocken-US -en-US chain. Im going to rely on en-US Wikipedia for a little help on en-US the definition. A blockchain en-US . is a continuously growing en-US list of records, called blocks, en-US which are linked and secured en-US using cryptography. Each en-US block typically contains a en-US cryptographic hash of the en-US previous block, a timestamp en-US and transaction data. By en-US design, a blockchain is en-US inherently resistant to en-US modification of the data.en-US Simply stated, the blocken-US -en-US chain is like a high-tech comen-US-en-US puter-based ledger that en-US records all transactions with en-US no bank involvement. What en-US are the benefits? Supposedly, en-US unalterable information that en-US can be transparent or en-US restricted in accessibility, en-US better security, and much en-US faster transaction times. (An en-US example: a check might take en-US three days to clear at a bank, en-US but only seconds to clear en-US using Blockchain technoloen-US -en-US gy.)en-US Cryptocurrency has its en-US proponents and opponents. en-US Personally I remain skeptical. en-US Because its still in its infancy, en-US there are inherent dangers. I en-US mentioned there are several en-US cryptocurrencies that have en-US been created. This opens the en-US door to fraudsters who could en-US create, and market, a new en-US type of currency only to close en-US shop and take the real en-US money and run. en-US Volatility is something we en-US mentioned earlier, also. The en-US value of a cryptocurrency en-US could be $1,000 at purchase, en-US but $600 when you go to use, en-US sell or trade it. en-US Lastly there are security en-US issues to consider. People en-US who have purchased en-US cryptocurrency need to en-US store it somewhere. That en-US somewhere, of course, is en-US online. It is certainly possible en-US for hackers to compromise en-US accounts and steal a persons en-US cryptocurrency; in fact, it has en-US already happened.en-US Because all of this is so en-US new, governments, financial en-US institutions, regulators and en-US taxing authorities are still en-US scrambling to adjust their en-US processes and procedures. en-US Regulators, of course, do not en-US want the public to be taken en-US advantage of, and taxing en-US authorities, as you would en-US expect, want to assure they en-US get their fair share when the en-US values of cryptocurrencies en-US surge and profits are realized. en-US Will Bitcoin thrive and en-US become the only currency en-US used globally? Its anyones en-US guess. I doubt it. Blockchain, en-US however, once fully trusted en-US and integrated by the en-US business community, could en-US be a keeper. That being en-US said, its integration is en-US probably still several years en-US away.en-US David D. en-USA12 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USIen-USn my recent column about en-US the dust up over the Shiloh en-US Marsh, I mentioned en-US Haulover Canal. en-USWhenever that name en-US makes it into a column, I en-US know that it will be followed en-US by inquiries about what and en-US where it may be. First off, let en-US me say the name is a generic en-US one used all across North en-US America. Any place where en-US there are rivers, lakes or en-US swamps that need to be en-US connected, invariably a haul en-US over will happen. en-US It is just what it sounds like en-US a place where boaters must en-US carry their vessels over land en-US to reach the next body of en-US water. Usually a haul over en-US canal is dug to eliminate the en-US carry.en-US Perhaps the most famous en-US one is in Miami, but there are en-US so many it is hard to say. I am en-US not certain, but I believe our en-US own Haulover is in Brevard en-US County, but it could be in the en-US extreme Southeast portion of en-US Volusia County. en-US Many years ago the Indian en-US River ended at a slender strip en-US of land that separated it from en-US Mosquito Lagoon. Early en-US settlers located a place on that en-US peninsula where a stream cut en-US into the land from the south en-US and one penetrated from the en-US north. There the mariners en-US could carry their boats a en-US short distance to continue en-US their journey. Of course, en-US eventually they got to work to en-US connect the two. Then a boat en-US could be floated between the en-US two lagoons. That was our en-US original Haulover Canal. en-US For reasons that escape me, en-US when the government en-US decided to dig a proper en-US deep-water cut, the canal was en-US moved about a mile west to en-US its current location. If you en-US have ever been there, you can en-US see it is so obviously man en-US made. The one-quarter-mile en-US canal has the perfectly en-US straight edges Mother Nature en-US does not make. The northern en-US Halifax also was man-made en-US and has the same surveyed en-US shore lines. en-US Over the years, Haulover en-US Canal has become much en-US more than a short cut from en-US one body of water to another. en-US Before the size restrictions on en-US red drum, I caught a 38-inch en-US red fishing from the shore. It en-US also is now famous for black en-US drum and fish over 50 en-US pounds have been caught en-US there. The resident sheeps en-US head are also above average. en-US Near the little bridge and en-US just off the boat ramp below en-US is one of the best manatee en-US viewing areas in the state. At en-US this time of year, you will see en-US them mating, but the canal en-US has them year-round. Very en-US unusual for those temperaen-US -en-US ture sensitive creatures to be en-US in a place like that during the en-US winter. There has to be a en-US spring warming the water to en-US allow the manatees to linger en-US during the cooler months.en-US Naturally when a haul over en-US is dug, it is at the narrowest en-US point of land. For many years, en-US some of us have hoped for an en-US inlet to be excavated on the en-US north peninsula near High en-US Bridge or down south of en-US Turtle Mound. Both of those en-US places could be valuable for en-US the cleansing effect on the en-US inland waterways. Neither is en-US likely to happen. en-US Some years back, a narrow en-US cut was dug across a barrier en-US island at Tomoka State Park en-US to allow a canoe to reach a en-US dead-end waterway. The cut en-US was only 8 feet in length and en-US about 3 feet wide. Now that en-US same cut is 90 feet in width en-US and six feet deep in a place en-US with little tidal flow. When en-US you dig a canal or inlet, you en-US must be very careful of the en-US consequences. The power of en-US nature is difficult to harness.en-US To get to Haulover Canal, en-US go south out of Oak Hill and en-US turn left (east) off U.S. 1 en-US onto Kennedy Parkway and en-US drive for about 7 miles. en-US Once you launch there, you en-US have the option of boating en-US hundreds of miles north or en-US south into a tangle of en-US mangroves and islands en-US seldom seen any place else. en-US en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years. en-USPort Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores B-3en-USI en-UScame home after work one en-US day and started thinking en-US about dinner and what I en-US would prepare that evening just en-US like I always do. en-USYou all probably know by en-US now. I do all the cooking at en-US home, which is great because en-US my wife does everything else. en-US She pays the bills, handles en-US anything about the house and en-US family, and we are both happy en-US with our lives. en-US I try to keep the refrigerator en-US stocked with different foods, en-US and the pantry is always full en-US because I like to visit my en-US favorite stores several times en-US during the week. I always have en-US fresh food to choose from. I en-US usually cook seafood twice a en-US week, so I decided it was en-US seafood day. en-US Now lets see, my mother-en-US in-law likes salmon, so I will en-US make her teriyaki salmon with en-US fruit chutney. My wife loves en-US farm-raised catfish with en-US lemon and dill, so I have her en-US covered. Ill make a fresh salad en-US the way my family likes with en-US hearts of lettuce, English en-US cucumber, heirloom tomatoes, en-US orange slices and feta cheese. en-US Oh yes, they like my home-en-US made salad dressing (which I en-US will share with you later). en-US Now for the boys and me. en-US Oh! I know! I have some en-US chicken breasts, so Ill make en-US some fried chicken tenders en-US with sweet potatoes fries. That en-US should cover everyone except en-US the two cats, and I even en-US brought home two bags of dry en-US food that was on sale (but my en-US boys will feed the cats). en-US It was at about this time en-US when it hit me, Oh my en-US goodness, Ive opened a en-US restaurant in my own kitchen en-US and the family is ordering off en-US the daily menu! How did this en-US happen what have I done en-US I started thinking this has en-US to stop! And then reality hit en-US me in the face again. Wait a en-US minute, hold on. I dont have en-US to cut the grass or take out the en-US trash or deal with the house or en-US make doctor appointments or en-US fill out the income tax forms en-US or make any travel arrangeen-US -en-US ments and the list goes on and en-US on. en-US I think I better keep my en-US mouth shut and keep the en-US restaurant open. Im thinking en-US of extending the hours and en-US offering an early-bird menu en-US on special days and Sunday en-US morning brunch!
