en-USCity working on plans en-US to beautify Down Underen-USOne of Port Oranges hidden treasures could be a en-US lot more colorful soon.en-US City officials are working with the Florida Departen-US-en-US ment of Transportation on plans to beautify the area en-US under the Dunlawton Avenue bridge, known as en-US Down Under, part of which tentatively includes en-US murals.en-US That area, which is made up mainly of restaurants, en-US is just under the east side of the bridge past Port en-US Oranges Causeway Park and only accessible by boat en-US from the Halifax River or through roads which conen-US-en-US nect to South Peninsula Drive and run under the en-US bridge.en-US Public Information Director Christine Martindale en-US said there are not many details on the project en-US right now, including what the murals will be en-US about, who will paint them or how much it en-US could cost taxpayers.en-US This item will be brought to [Port Orange en-US City] Council at a workshop to get their feeden-US -en-US back about the murals, Martindale added. We will en-US let you know when the workshop is scheduled.en-US While theres no date for the workshop at this en-US point, Martindale did say to expect it to happen en-US sometime this spring.en-US In addition to murals, there will be other redeen-US -en-US velopment ideas discussed at the workshop, Maren-US -en-US tindale stated. The goal of the workshop is to seek en-US direction from council on how to move forward in en-US the Down Under District.en-US The en-US murals, once painted, en-US are expected to cover some or all of the conen-US -en-US crete en-US pilings, walls and support structure under the en-US bridge. Most of that wont be visible to the drivers en-US who use the bridge, but it should be easily seen by en-US boaters going through the area and anyone who visen-US -en-US its the shops located Down Under, including Kings en-US Seafood, DJs Deck and Our Deck Down Under.en-US City officials have yet to submit the application for en-USFollowing more than 45 en-US minutes of debate, the Voluen-US -en-US sia County Council approved en-US more than $2.3 million in en-US ECHO Grant awards to 10 en-US projects across the county.en-US The debate, however, cenen-US -en-US tered around the City of en-US Ormond Beachs grant applien-US -en-US cation due to questions conen-US -en-US cerning delinquent property en-US taxes the city says it does not en-US owe. The property in quesen-US -en-US tion is unrelated to the envien-US -en-US ronmentally-friendly lighten-US-en-US ing project at the Ormond en-US Beach Sports Complex. en-US Instead, the property at 730 en-US Airport Road, which is the en-US site of a privately-owned Riven-US-en-US erbend Golf Course, became en-US the subject of debate.en-US I think we agree its all en-US about fairness and equity and en-US clean hands ... the city doesnt en-US owe the county any taxes, en-US said Randy Hayes, Ormond en-US Beach city attorney. en-US Ormond Beach has leased en-US the city-owned property to en-US the golf course for 27 years, en-US most of which time the propen-US -en-US erty was considered tax-exen-US -en-US empt. That changed in 2012 en-US when the county tax appraisen-US -en-US er placed the property on the en-US tax rolls. en-US The (county) staff conen-US -en-US tends that (the City of en-US Ormond Beach) owes en-US $135,000 in back property en-USOrmond gets en-US Echo Grant en-US despite possibly en-US owing taxes en-USRiverfest starts this weeken-USIts a brand new event orgaen-US -en-US nizers hope will eventually en-US draw big attention and en-US money to Port Oranges Riven-US-en-US erwalk area.en-US The inaugural edition of en-US Riverfest On The Halifax en-US begins this weekend, with en-US most events, including a 5K en-US Run and the Paddle Battle, en-US in or around the recently en-US built Riverwalk Park on the en-US corner of U.S. 1 and Ocean en-US Avenue.en-US Event Chairman Shawn en-US Goepfert is hoping to see at en-US least 5,000 people show up en-US during the three-day festival, en-US which he hopes will turn into en-US an annual fundraiser for the en-US Port Orange South Daytona en-US Chamber of Commerce and a en-US local Rotary Club.en-US Theres a lot of opportunien-US-en-US ties in that area for people to en-US develop and the park is a en-US Hometown News file photoen-USWesley Guest and his cousin Juliana Guest, both 5, of Port Orange climb a en-US spiderweb of ropes during their visit to Riverwalk Park, which is the site this en-US weekend of the first Port Orange Riverfest. en-USNew Jimmy Hulas en-US about to start en-US constructionen-USIts been an empty concrete en-US and asphalt lot for three en-US years.en-US Now Port Oranges Down en-US Under area is about to have en-US another restaurant and this en-US one will display what one of en-US its owners calls a needed en-US surfer vibe.en-US The owners of Jimmy en-US Hulas restaurant at Granada en-US Plaza in Ormond Beach are en-US about to begin construction en-US on their second location at 65 en-US Dunlawton Ave., which is off en-US the northeast foot of the en-US Dunlawton Bridge.en-US Jimmy Hulas, a Winter en-US Park based surf-themed en-US chain with 14 locations en-US throughout Florida, defines en-US itself as bringing food nirvaen-US-en-US na, selling tacos, burgers, en-US sandwiches and craft beers. en-US The Ormond location near en-US Birthplace of Speed Park is en-US the only one in the Daytona en-US Beach area.en-US Jose Cifuentes, a Daytona en-US native who met his wife en-US Vanessa while both served in en-US the Air Force, said he and his en-US investors plan to spend more en-US than $1.3 million, most of it en-US going towards a stand-alone, en-US 3,800-square-foot building en-US complete with indoor and en-US outdoor eating areas, live en-US music and a full service bar.en-US I wanted to bring a Calien-US -en-US fornia-type cuisine to the en-US East Coast, especially to my en-US town, Mr. Cifuentes noted en-US when asked why he decided en-US to franchise with Jimmy en-US Hulas. We fell in the love en-US with the dcor, the food. Im en-US an avid surfer, so it fit perfect en-US for the beach.en-US Construction is expected en-US to start sometime in July and en-US wrap up in early 2019, preferen-US -en-US ably before Speed Weeks and en-US Bike Week.en-US The Dunlawton lot is just en-USSee y'all!en-USRandy Barber/staff photographeren-USMaxwell, a 200-pound rehabilitated sea turtle gives a nod to the hundreds en-US of happy onlookers who cheer him on as he waits for a wave to come in to en-US help him back into the wild in Ponce Inlet on Saturday, April 28. The last one, sound, is what Florida State Hearing Aids specializes in.Owner Julie Pruitt opened Florida State Hearing Aids Inc. in 2004 in order to bring a more affordable and wider variety of hearing aids to my clientele, she said. Ms Pruitt is assisted by Patient Care Coordinator Samantha Carpenter whose job is to schedule patients appointments, pre-authorizations, billing, and assist with the cleaning and maintenance of hearing aids. She has been with Florida State Hearing Aids for six years, working an additional eight years with Ms Pruitt before that. You wont walk in two weeks after you purchase your hearing aids and get a random person that doesnt really care about you at all, they dont know you, they didnt test or fit you, and you feel left out in the cold. O en-USne of the most beautiful en-US pieces of land in Volusia en-US County has perhaps en-US been inhabited since the en-US beginning of mankind. en-USWhen the first Europeans en-US arrived in what is now Florida, en-US the little peninsula formed en-US where the Tomoka River en-US meets the Halifax was a en-US thriving Native American en-US village called Nocoroco. Today en-US that land is the central portion en-US of Tomoka State park.en-US As a fisherman, each time I en-US go there, I cant help but think en-US about what a perfect place the en-US Timucuan Indians had to live. en-US The peninsula is high and en-US hard-packed under spreading en-US live oaks draped in Spanish en-US moss. en-US Fish, shellfish and game of en-US all kinds abound in that area en-US even now. I can only imagine en-US the bounty that was available en-US to them back then. Deer, en-US turkey, and water fowl, plus en-US shrimp, oysters, clams, crab en-US and a wide variety of fish must en-US have been on their everyday en-US menu. en-US Freshwater springs are still en-US bubbling up in the area. As I en-US fish there, it is not difficult to en-US picture the idyllic life those en-US early residents must have had. en-US Early settlers described the en-US Timucuan men as fit and en-US athletic, taking part in various en-US games and contests in order to en-US stay toned. The women were en-US said to be uncommonly en-US beautiful and graceful. The en-US name of the Timucuan en-US Princess Issena survives in this en-US area until this day. Tall and en-US lithe, she carried herself with en-US the same dignity as European en-US royalty. en-US When the young French en-US Huguenot nobleman Earnest en-US DErlach first came to en-US Nocoroco to trade, he was en-US smitten. A courtship ensued en-US and, in 1566, the young couple en-US entered into the first Christian en-US marriage on the North en-US American continent.en-US In the months to come, the en-US Spanish soldiers came down en-US from Jacksonville to attack the en-US French settlement, and most en-US of the Huguenots were killed. en-US Princess Issena would risk it en-US all to go into the battlefield en-US and successfully rescue her en-US injured husband. The pair was en-US able to escape to France to live en-US out their lives in luxury. There en-US is a stone marker at the en-US northwest corner of Ormond en-US Beachs Granada Bridge where en-US the marriage may have taken en-US place. en-US In 1766, the British crown en-US granted the site of the Indian en-US village and 20,000 acres to Sir en-US Richard Oswald, who would en-US operate a huge plantation as en-US an absentee owner. If 20,000 en-US acres seems like a lot, well, the en-US Mount Oswald plantation en-US stretched all the way south en-US and west to where Daytona en-US International Speedway now en-US sits. There are no reasons for it. en-USA shattered imageen-USI recently met a friend for an early morning walk on the en-US beach. en-US I parked at the Harvard Avenue approach in Ormond Beach. I en-US was shocked to find a broken beer bottle in the parking area. It en-US had been run over and shattered in all directions. I could imagen-US -en-US ine a child running to the beach barefoot through this mess.en-US The tollbooth attendant had a broom, so we cleaned it up as en-US best we could. Some surfers told me that since nearby bars use en-US the approach their patrons to park, broken beer bottles are a regen-US -en-US ular occurrence. Sounds like an easy lawsuit to me. en-USInspections were a hassleen-USFlorida had auto inspection for many years. en-US It was wildly unpopular. A study showed that of the top 50 en-US causes of auto accidents, equipment problems, the kind of things en-US that are picked up during the annual inspection, was number 49. en-US It simply wasnt cost-effective.en-US Everybody loathed it. It was offered weekdays only, 9 a.m. to 5 en-US p.m., so you had to take off work. Long lines of cars idling, waiten-US-en-US ing, sometimes for hours, constant exhaust fumes and pollution. en-US Hot days, hot cars, hot tempers. The thousands of inspectors had en-US to be paid, out of our taxes. Commercial property, the inspection en-US stations, off the tax rolls. en-US Former Gov. Bob Martinez promised to end auto inspections en-US and was elected because of this promise. Modern cars are also far en-US more durable than they were in the 1950s; they simply dont en-US need constant inspections. If you really want to make our roads en-US safer, put down the cell phone and drive. en en-US A slick tipen-USI would just like to say that with all the new docks, infrastrucen-US -en-US ture and work being done on and near the beach, the bolts and en-US nuts are stainless steel. They do not last all that long. en-US Using a $6 tube of silicon on each nut would save tens of thouen-US -en-US sands of dollars in repair later.en-USDeath of cable TVen-USThe stocks of cable companies are crashing as people cut the en-US cord. en-US Cable companies will raise the rates for broadband Internet, en-US because a lot of people are getting rid of their video services. In the en-US dollar store industry, or en-US low-price retail market, the en-US big head-to-head competition en-US is between Dollar Tree and en-US Dollar General. However, en-US while Dollar Tree sells en-US everything for a dollar, Dollar en-US General is a dollar store in en-US name only. It has focused on en-US higher-priced items, which en-US has allowed it to pull even en-US with Walmart.en-US If you havent been to a en-US Dollar General lately, go in en-US one and look around. Its like en-US looking at a mini-Walmart. en-US Dollar Tree, on the other en-US hand, looks like a dollar store en-US with a limited inventory. en-US Family Dollar Stores look like en-US yet another mini-Walmart.en-US So, to keep the company en-US strong and shareholders en-US happy, Dollar Tree officials en-US obviously realized they en-US needed to keep Family Dollar en-US Stores just as they are and en-US even add some.en-US In Volusia County, that en-US meant adding one in Port en-US Orange to give it 10 in the en-US East Volusia area to compete en-US against the 15 Dollar General en-US stores (well, it could be 17 en-US soon with one under conen-US -en-US struction in Edgewater and en-US one planned in Samsula). en-US There are 12 Dollar Tree en-US stores in East Volusia with one en-US planned in Edgewater.en-US In West Volusia, there are en-US five Dollar Tree stores, 14 en-US Dollar Generals and six en-US Family Dollar Stores. Of en-US course, dont count on those en-US numbers staying the same for en-US long.en-US ***en-US The housing market is en-UScontinuing the pace it set for en-US 2018, with rapidly rising en-US prices and a low inventory en-US keeping sales of existing en-US houses slightly below last year en-US while construction of new en-US houses booms. Sales of en-US existing houses by Realtors in en-US the Volusia/Flagler area were en-US at 1,056 in March, down 4.3 en-US percent from last year. The en-US median price, where half sold en-US for more and half for less, was en-US at $205,700, up 11.2 percent. en-US Condo sales were down 1.8 en-US percent, while the median en-US price was up 18.1 percent in en-US the two-county area.en-US The Census Bureau reports en-US permen-USits were issued for 183 en-US housing units en-US in March (175 en-US single-family) in the Volusia/en-US Flagler area, up from 171 (167 en-US single-family) in Mach 2017. en-US That was with 7en-US 0 percent of en-US the area reporting.en-US ***en-US I have a correction on a en-US previous item. The 7-Eleven en-US planned at Clyde Morris en-US Boulevard and Beville Road in en-US Daytona Beach would be at en-US the southwest corner, replacen-US -en-US ing an office building. Also, en-US there probably will be a en-US restaurant next door.en-US Some more stuff for the en-US planning boards. Another en-US is whether they are happy liven-US -en-US ing alone or do they feel loneen-US-en-US ly, isolated and depressed? en-US There are numerous small en-US clues children or caregivers of en-US seniors might be missing en-US because they see them every en-US day and might not notice en-US them.en-US Rose said minor changes in en-US behavior might be normal, but en-US if they become part of a paten-US-en-US tern they should be more en-US closely watched, such as:en-US Clothes start showing en-US unusual stains.en-US Is mom no longer wearing en-US makeup?en-US Dad is no longer combing en-US his hair or cares about the way en-US he looks when he goes out.en-US Repeat themselves time en-US and time again.en-US Arent eating properly.en-US Not socializing anymore.en-US For more information, call en-US (386) 847-2322, visiten-US assisten-US -en-US edlivingmadesimple.com en-US or en-US email almsnsb@gmail.com. en-USPort Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores A-9en-USAen-USs many of my regular en-US readers know, my en-US financial services en-US company added reverse en-US mortgage loan (HECM) en-US origination a few years back. en-USClients had asked for it, so en-US we investigated this financial en-US instrument thoroughly before en-US adding it to our services. Since en-US that time, weve helped dozens en-US of people leverage HECM en-US loans to meet their needs. I en-US recently sat down with Mike en-US Peerless, director of reverse en-US mortgages at Holland Morten-US -en-US gage Services Inc., to discuss en-US our firms progress and en-US industry trends.en-US While these loans have been en-US typically used to access home en-US equity for cash, or to refinance en-US an existing mortgage to en-US eliminate required mortgage en-US payments, Mike shared that an en-US increasingly popular use of en-US reverse mortgage loans is the en-US HECM for Purchase. Instead en-US of using it to get cash or en-US refinance an existing home en-US mortgage, the transaction en-US order is, ironically, reversed. en-US The loan is taken out and en-US used, along with the borrowen-US -en-US ers down payment, to en-US purchase a new home.en-US Heres an example: A en-US 68-year-old woman has en-US $200,000 cash available to en-US purchase a new home, but en-US does not want an ongoing en-US mortgage payment in retireen-US -en-US ment. She shops around, but en-US doesnt find anything she likes en-US for $200,000. Then, she finds en-US exactly what she is looking for en-US . but the price tag is en-US $330,000. She realizes she en-US wants a nicer home than she en-US could afford with her $200,000 en-US cash. With the HECM for en-US Purchase, our 68-year-old en-US could buy the $330,000 home en-US and not have an ongoing en-US mortgage payment. However, en-US she would still be required to en-US pay property taxes, insurance, en-US homeowners association dues en-US and maintenance expenses. en-US She would borrow $152,000 en-US from the reverse mortgage en-US lender and write a check at en-US closing for $196,000. (My en-US numbers are rounded to the en-US nearest $1,000). When the en-US HECM for Purchase transacen-US -en-US tion is complete, she has the en-US home she wants, a loan, and en-US no required mortgage en-US payments. en-US As with any loan, there are en-US fees and expenses that would en-US add to her purchase price. en-US There is also interest on the en-US loan and an ongoing Mortgage en-US Insurance Premium that will en-US grow unless she opts to make en-US payments, which she can do at en-US any time. And, just like a en-US traditional home mortgage, en-US she can sell the home and pay en-US off the loan.en-US Part of the job of a loan en-US originator, of course, is to walk en-US the borrower through the en-US process of getting a reverse en-US mortgage loan, compare en-US lenders, and explain all the en-US fees and expenses involved. en-US For anyone who is interested en-US in a reverse mortgage loan, it en-US is important to remember en-US there are different kinds and en-US uses. The Tomoka, en-US Halifax, Indian and St. Johns en-US Rivers gave me all the delien-US -en-US cious fresh fish I could ever en-US hope to catch. Of course, all en-US that fishing provided me with en-US loads of adventure and those en-US of you who have my book I en-US Swear The Snook Drowned en-US know all about that. Those en-US who regularly read this en-US column are also privy to lots en-US of outdoor adventure that is en-US my life.en-US Only last week I told you en-US how a fat mullet knocked me en-US out of my kayak. That was en-US surely an unexpected advenen-US -en-US ture. But, no, there is more to en-US fishing than food and en-US adventure. en-US I am always aware that en-US when I fish I am continuing a en-US tradition of taking sustenance en-US from the water that is as old as en-US mankind. Each week I try to en-US impart the celestial side of en-US fishing, but I must admit it is a en-US difficult thing to do.en-US Without exception I begin en-US each trip by glancing skyward en-US to thank my God for yet en-US another opportunity to spend en-US some time with nature. en-US Another chance to do what I en-US love. I have never taken it for en-US granted. Usually my trips en-US begin at dawn so I am alone en-US on the water. That solitude en-US often prompts me to speak out en-US loud to my father, mother and en-US younger sister. All of them en-US gone now. I tell each of them en-US what they meant to me and en-US how much I miss them. en-US Silently I will give thanks for en-US my wife, daughter, son and en-US three grandchildren. en-US You see, I seldom go to en-US church, at least not in a en-US building. My makers great en-US outdoors is my place of en-US worship. en-US In Volusia County we are en-US blessed with a natural en-US surrounding that is second to en-US none. As I motor or paddle en-US along, I take the time to en-US admire the birds, otters, en-US alligators, snakes and fish. All en-US are beautiful to me and I feel en-US honored to be in their en-US company. I relish the natural en-US scenery I pass. The trees, en-US bushes, stumps and grasses all en-US hold a fascination. I treasure en-US the act of being alone in the en-US wilderness. en-US As you know, through the en-US years I have had some valued en-US fishing buddies and I often en-US think of them when on the en-US water, but fact is I am best en-US alone. This is where I ponder en-US my supposed problems and en-US make them disappear. It is my en-US escape from the noise of en-US modern life; a place where I en-US can only hear the splash of a en-US fish or the call of a bird or en-US smell the brine or the unique en-US odor of the air just before a en-US rain. en-US I suppose after all these en-US years I have caught a gymnasien-US -en-US um full of fish and truth be en-US known, despite a failing en-US memory, I think I can recall en-US most of them. I just love what en-US I do. Catch fish. Eat fish. Dont en-US catch fish. Dont eat fish. Its all en-US the same to me. I sincerely en-US hope each of you have en-US something in your life that en-US gives you such pleasure. en-US Everyone deserves the bliss I en-US find on the water. en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years. Its all about en-US the food. I want a burrito, en-US fajitas, nachos, enchiladas, en-US guacamole, chimichangas, en-US black beans and red beans, en-US now! Oops, dont forget the en-US Margaritas. en-US The most popular ethnic en-US cuisine in America is en-US Mexican. Nachos have en-US replaced chips as a snack, and en-US salsa has pushed ketchup out en-US of its number one condiment en-US spot. en-US Yes, Hispanic food is going en-US wild in the U.S., bringing the en-USheat to food everywhere. en-US Spicy pepper-infused flavors en-US are a hot trend and will en-US continue for years to come. en-US Chili-infused beer is now on en-US the market with a blend of en-US habaneros, jalapenos, en-US serrano and Anaheim en-US peppers. The Hispanic en-US culture is putting flavor and en-US zing in foods.en-US Remember, the heat is in en-US the membrane and seed of en-US the pepper and not in the en-US meat. Try it. Take a jalapeno en-US pepper and just cut the outer en-US green skin off leaving no en-US white or seed and taste it raw. en-US It will taste like green pepper en-US with almost no heat. Another en-US tip when eating Hispanic en-US food is to eat the rice and en-US beans together. No gas will en-US form, if you get my meaning. en-US Here is a great recipe that en-US is easy to make for all en-US occasions.
