en-USBealls moving store en-US to Tomoka Town Centeren-USAfter many years as one of the anchors of a South en-US Daytona mall, a long-time tenant will now set up en-US shop elsewhere in the Daytona Beach area.en-US Bealls Outlet, a store that specializes in selling en-US clothes, accessories, toys, gifts and all kinds of home en-US dcor at low prices, plans to close its Sunshine Park en-US Mall store by the end of en-USApril and open one at en-US Tomoka Town Center, a new shopping development en-US adjacent to the Tanger Outlets Mall at the corner of en-US Interstate 95 and LPGA Boulevard.en-US The new Bealls should be ready to go sometime in en-US the fall, according to Karen en-US Filips, Director of Comen-US -en-US munications & Community Affairs for Bealls Inc.en-US Like all retailers, were constantly evaluating the en-US performance of our portfolio of stores, Ms. en-US Filips added. As part of our business strategy en-US and revitalization plans, some of our underen-US -en-US sized stores are being consolidated due to en-US our growth strategy in the market.en-US Bealls, a privately owned company with en-US corporate offices in Bradenton, is the parent of en-US Bealls Outlets, which operates more than 500 stores en-US worldwide, including more than 70 in Florida. The en-US comapny employs more than 100 people in the Dayen-US -en-US tona Beach area.en-US Company officials noted closing the Sunshine en-US Park store, a 16,475-square-foot space between the en-US Daytona Ice Arena and Publix, was a difficult but en-US necessary choice.en-US We are focused on continuing to grow our busien-US -en-US ness with larger stores where people love to shop, en-US Ms. Filips stated. We thank our customers and en-US assoen-US -en-US ciates for letting us en-US be a part of their community and encouren-US -en-US age them to continuing shopping with us at one of en-US our other locations in the area.en-US All Bealls employees at the Sunshine Park store en-US have been offered similar jobs with the company at en-US other area locations. Some of them may end up at en-US the Tomoka location when it opens, according to en-US Ms. Filips.en-US All Aboard Properties of Port Orange, owner of en-USIf youre a civic-minded en-US citizen of South Daytona, the en-US city could use your help.en-US Officials are looking to fill en-US volunteer spots on each of its en-US three citizen advisory boards: en-US Adjustment & Appeals, Land en-US Development Regulation and en-US Parks & Recreation.en-US South Daytona Public en-US Information Officer Jeanne en-US Willard said the openings are en-US for alternates to current en-US board members.en-US We are always looking for en-US citizens who are interested in en-US getting involved and are willen-US -en-US ing to volunteer their time en-US and talents for the good of en-US our community, Ms. Willard en-US added. Alternate board en-US members attend all meetings en-US so that they are current on en-US issues and are able to step in en-US if a regular board member is en-US unable to attend.en-US Those who are interested en-US would be required to fill out en-US an application provided by en-US the city and must receive en-US approval from the City en-US Council before they can en-US begin.en-US Each board is made up of en-US seven members and two en-US alternates, but finding people en-US to fill those roles isnt always en-US the easiest, according to en-US South Daytona Community en-US Development Director John en-US Dillard.en-US If we dont have a quorum en-US when it comes to the meeting en-US time, then we have to start all en-US over again, Mr. Dillard staten-US -en-US ed. We have to make sure we en-US have enough people there to en-US meet those requirements.en-US Alternates arent allowed to en-USSouth Daytona en-US looking to fill en-US board spots en-USVeteranen-US heading back en-US to Vietnamen-USPort Orange resident Jim en-US Glor was awarded a Purple en-US Heart after he was wounded en-US in the Vietnam War and en-US hasnt been back since. en-US Until now. en-US Mr. Glor is one of nine veten-US -en-US erans selected for the Veteran en-US of Foreign Wars Return to en-US Vietnam, an all-expense paid en-US trip set to depart April 5 and en-US return April 18.en-US The in-country tour en-US offered by the national VFW en-US has been going on since en-US 2005. The trip will include en-US visits to key cities, including en-US Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City en-US (formerly Saigon), with stops en-US at Hue and DaNang. Former en-US battlefields and military en-US bases are on the agenda as en-US well as Vietnamese cultural en-US stops.en-US The idea of the trip is one en-US of healing, a chance to reconen-US -en-US cile the past. en-US Mr. Glors last rank was E5 en-US sergeant in the U.S. Marine en-US Corps. He enlisted in the en-US Marines in 1966, right after en-US high school. He went to Vieten-US -en-US nam shortly thereafter. en-US The country was a beautien-US -en-US ful country when we werent en-US being shot at or in combat en-US situations, he said. It is a en-US very lush country because it en-US is a tropical zone. I want to en-US go back, because I wanted en-US closure on it. The only thing en-US I saw was the boondocks, the en-US jungles, the rice paddies and en-US the small villages. Enlisted en-US personnel werent allowed in en-US the cities back that early in en-US the war. I want to go back, I en-US want to see the cities, the en-US progression of their economy en-US and their lifestyle since we en-US are not there anymore.en-US Regarding his Purple en-US Heart, he said, We went en-US down to search a ridge line to en-US try and find a better observaen-US -en-US tion post and they (Viet en-US Cong and North Vietnamen-US -en-US ese) had booby trapped the en-US area. Three of us were taken en-US out of the field. I was wounden-US -en-US ed in the right arm and right en-US side, and both my legs from en-US the waste down with shrapen-US -en-US nel. en-US He was operated on and en-US hospitalized for about two en-US months, then went back to en-US active combat and finished en-US up his time with his unit. en-USA2 Port Orange/South Daytona/Ponce Inlet/Daytona Beach Shores en-USMs. Wentzel, a Pennsylvania en-US native and artist, has always en-US been a history buff. She grew en-US up in Bucks County, Pa., in the en-US town of New Hope along the en-US Delaware River. Her high en-US school graduation ceremony en-US took place at the very site en-US where George Washington en-US crossed the Delaware River.en-US She is also a music buff. She en-US grew up in a house that her en-US mother, a sculptor, designed to en-US accommodate a pipe organ her en-US father restored from an old en-US Episcopal church, complete en-US with 1,000 pipes.en-US An accomplished guitar en-US player, her decision to become en-US a musician, then later to en-US become a visual artist, came as en-US no surprise to her family. en-US However, her choices came en-US with a disclaimer she would en-US need to be her own financial en-US backer. She sought scholaren-US -en-US ships, grants and loans to see en-US her through.en-US She graduated from the en-US Tyler School of Art at Temple en-US University with a bachelors en-US degree in fine arts. While puren-US -en-US suing her degree, she worked en-US as a childrens book illustrator. en-US She would also do pen and ink en-US illustrations of historical archien-US -en-US tecture across the Bucks en-US County countryside and try to en-US sell her work to the owners en-US and proprietors.en-US Sometimes I got lucky and en-US my work was purchased, she en-US said.en-US Along the way, she was hired en-US to design wine labels, illustraen-US -en-US tions for local magazines and en-US for the occasional childrens en-US book. She says one job, Once en-US Upon A Recipe, comes to en-US mind as the moment she en-US understood the plight of the en-US starving artist. The authors en-US would provide her with samen-US -en-US ples (healthy snacks for chilen-US-en-US dren) to draw from, which en-US provided her with a meal as en-US well.en-US When she finished college, en-US she traveled through Europe en-US on the back of a Harley-Daviden-US -en-US son motorcycle, touring Sween-US -en-US den, Denmark, Germany, Italy en-US and France.en-US I always enjoyed going to en-US museums, galleries and historen-US -en-US ic sites at home, so having the en-US opportunity to see these speen-US -en-US cial places in Europe was life en-US changing, she said.en-US The move to Florida, away en-US from family and friends, was a en-US practical decision. Living in en-US the affluent Bucks County en-US region was expensive. She and en-US her ex-husband moved to en-US Florida and bought the most en-US rundown home in Ormond-en-US by-the-Sea. However, she says en-US finding a job turned out to be en-US harder than expected. en-US I worked, doing everything en-US from working in a print shop en-US to waitressing, she said. Not en-US a tube of paint was squeezed en-US or an art pencil sharpened en-US during this time.en-US All her efforts were on en-US building a life and a new en-US home, and later, a family and a en-US new career.en-US She attended the University en-US of Central Florida to get addien-US -en-US tional credits in the field of en-US exceptional education, and en-US this turned out to be the en-US beginning of a new direction. en-US She began to volunteer at the en-US Museum of Arts and Sciences, en-US and soon became an employee en-US in their education department en-US under the direction of Gary en-US Libby. During that time, she en-US also had a son, Noah, who is en-US now 17 and pursuing a career en-US in photography. She became en-US the co-curator of education at en-US MOAS until 2007, at which en-US point her life took another en-US direction.en-US Ms. Wentzel and two parten-US -en-US ners opened a used book store en-US with an art and music venue in en-US Ormond Beach.en-US A lot can be learned when en-US going into business, she said. en-US It is difficult, exhilarating, en-US unforgiving and life changing, en-US all at the same time. Some days en-US you are inspired to take it on en-US again, and other days you say en-US never again. But there are en-US things you learn all the same. en-USShe added, The changes I en-US needed turned out to be peren-US -en-US sonal as well as professional.en-US The book store ended after a en-US year. Her marriage ended, and en-US a new life began for her and en-US her son.en-US The hardest times in your en-US life with the right attitude can en-US be the beginning of the best en-US chapter, she said. And this en-US was true for her. Almost en-US instantly, the paints, pens and en-US art paper came out.en-US Her art work in college was en-US in black, white and hues of en-US gray, but, now, vibrant colors en-US came out in her work.en-US Life became more colorful, en-US she said. I became my own en-US person. I was reunited with the en-US self I had lost somewhere over en-US the past 30 years.en-US She worked for the City of en-US Daytona Beach at an ECHO en-US site, where children came to an en-US environmental learning center. en-US Then she worked at Ormond en-US Memorial Art Museum and en-US Gardens as curator of educaen-US -en-US tion and exhibitions. Then a en-US position came up at the Lighten-US -en-US house, and she was one of en-US many who applied.en-US I was very fortunate, she en-US said. en-US She became programs manen-US -en-US ager at the Ponce Inlet Lighten-US -en-US house six years ago. She works en-US closely with more than 30 volen-US -en-US unteers, docents and educaen-US -en-US tors, who graciously donate en-US their time to the Ponce Inlet en-US Lighthouse Preservation Assoen-US -en-US ciation, giving tours, visiting en-US schools and helping to be en-US ambassadors of the Ponce en-US Inlet Lighthouse.en-US She said, One of the most en-US important things about the en-US Lighthouse is the support of en-US the community. Were able to en-US go to schools, give programs, en-US and offer field trips at the en-US Lighthouse at no charge. Were en-US self-supporting.en-US The Ponce De Leon Inlet en-US Lighthouse Preservation Assoen-US -en-US ciation Inc., a non-profit, is en-US supported by the gift shop, en-US memberships, visitors to the en-US Lighthouse and donations en-US from the community.en-US I feel so lucky because I get en-US to spend time with all ages en-US from all over the world, Ms. en-US Wentzel said. And I get to go en-US into Volusia County Schools en-US and teach students about the en-US science of light and lighthouse en-US illumination, and what it was en-US like for families who lived here en-US (years ago). en-US She met new friends and en-US met her new husband, Mark en-US Reed, who has run a beach en-US concession for more than 25 en-US years.en-US She still lives in Ormond-en-US by-the-Sea, in a home she built en-US where her old house once en-US stood. She still works at the en-US Ponce Inlet Lighthouse as proen-US -en-US grams manager. And she still en-US emits the same enthusiasm en-US through her position, despite en-US her quiet nature. When she is en-US not busy at her job, she still en-US travels to juried art shows with en-US her watercolors. But the Lighten-US-en-US house is a major part of her en-US life.en-US Its something I am very en-US proud of, she says. And good en-US friends are made along the en-US way. OWNER/DENTIST DR. Another mystery. Still, I en-US believe most of us have an en-US affinity for water; a closeness en-US to the wet world. Some have en-US speculated that comes from en-US the fluid incubation we en-US enjoyed in our mothers en-US womb. It is true that even en-US those who do not actively en-US engage in water sports are still en-US drawn to water, and especially en-US the sea. en-US Living near the Atlantic en-US Ocean allows me to meet en-US visitors who have traveled en-US hundreds of miles to sit and en-US look at it. These folks seem en-US mesmerized by the colors, the en-US motion, and the birds and fish en-US they may see. No doubt about en-US it, water exerts a strong pull en-US on us humans. en-US Now, if you have a desire to en-US get a bit closer to our watery en-US world, you need only turn on en-US the television. Currently en-US playing on BBC America is en-US the magnificent series "Planet en-US Earth, The Blue Planet." en-US Brilliantly photographed and en-US researched, "The Blue en-US Planet"will take you to places en-US you could not have imagined.en-US Each episode will astound en-US you, but for me, nothing en-US matches the one on the deep en-US ocean. There you will be en-US shown creatures never before en-US seen by the public. It is en-US beautifully narrated by David en-US Attenborough, who begins by en-US telling us that our Earth is 70 en-US percent water, and the seas en-US contain more animals than en-US any other place on the planet.en-US The things that exist en-US between one mile and seven en-US miles of depth are truly en-US amazing. The creatures shown en-US in the deep ocean could never en-US have been dreamed up by en-US those among us possessed of en-US the wildest imaginations. en-US There, the sunlight that we all en-US depend on is practically nonen-US existent, and many species en-US resort to a kind of bioluminesen-US -en-US cence. en-US An angler fish that is en-US beyond ugly waves a glowing en-US fishing lure from atop its head en-US to attract prey. Another fish en-US that thrives down there has en-US the worlds largest teeth as en-US compared to its size a more en-US formidable thing you will en-US never see. en-US In the oceans, the shrimp en-US are always the victims as food en-US for the other creatures. In the en-US deep ocean, there is a shrimp en-US that has a unique survival en-US trick. When under attack, the en-US shrimp begins to swirl about, en-US releasing luminescent strings en-US that confuse the predator long en-US enough for the shrimp to en-US make an escape. en-US These are but a few of the en-US miracles of the sea you will en-US find on "The Blue Planet." en-US Episodes deal with predatory en-US fish in a feeding frenzy, and I en-US even saw film of a full-grown en-US octopus out of the water and en-US moving through the rocks on en-US a beach as it looked for crabs en-US to eat. I dont know about you, en-US but if I came across an octopus en-US walking on the beach, I would en-US be weirded out. en-US I know that most of us have en-US watched "The Planet Earth" en-US series for years and would en-US agree it has been great, but en-US "The Blue Planet" is remarken-US -en-US able. From the open ocean to en-US the shore and the estuaries, en-US you are bound to be enteren-US -en-US tained. The show is stunningly en-US filmed and gives us a look at a en-US part of our world that we en-US seldom see. en-US If you are like me and love en-US being in and on the water, this en-US show will thrill you. If you are en-US not a participant, you will be en-US taken closer to our watery en-US world than you ever believed en-US possible. en-US Dan Smith is on the board of en-US directors for the Ormond Beach en-US Historical Society and The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association and is the author en-US of two books, The Worlds en-US Greatest Beach and I Swear en-US the Snook Drowned. With the new construction in this county and the additions en-US to the tax roll, I find it difficult to believe they have trouble with en-US expenditures. en-US When they started the beach-ramp toll, everyone said, well its en-US only 50 cents. Well look at it now. When they started the stormen-US -en-US water fee that everybody paid for, it was small, but look at it now. en-US I find it difficult to believe the voters in Volusia County would en-US approve another fee. en-USEvent costs are too muchen-USI am calling about the changes in ordinances on Canal Street en-US in New Smyrna Beach. en-US They are starting a policy of having two off-duty police offien-US -en-US cers and firefighters on Canal Street when the street is shut off en-US for an activity, including the car show on the second Saturday of en-US each month. en-US Now, that would mean it would cost us about $800 every time en-US there is a car show. Unfortunately, for en-US years many consumers would en-US buy imported lamb from New en-US Zealand and Australia, overen-US -en-US cook it, and then serve it with en-US mint jelly to mask the taste. en-US The flavor would be overpowen-US -en-US ering and the texture dry and en-US chewy. en-US Lamb raised in the United en-US States is grain-fed, giving the en-US lamb a beefier flavor unlike en-US the imported lamb that was en-US grass-fed, which caused a en-US more intense flavor. Todays en-US lamb from New Zealand and en-US Australia is grain-fed and has en-US developed a more delicate en-US taste. I still prefer the domestic en-US lamb, but I will use the importen-US-en-US ed in a pinch with no problem.en-US Chefs are better trained in en-US the cooking of lamb today, and en-US it is seen more often on restauen-US-en-US rant menus as well as lamb en-US shanks, my second all-time en-US favorite meat. Lamb is very en-US healthy to eat. It is a great en-US source of protein, essential en-US vitamins and minerals. It has en-US the correct ratio of all eight of en-US the essential amino acids.en-US The meat has less marbling en-US than other meats, which en-US means most of the fat is on the en-US outside edges. A 3-ounce poren-US -en-US tion of lamb leg has 74 mg of en-US cholesterol compared to 70 mg en-US in a skinless chicken breast. en-US Calorie-wise, there are 162 in en-US lamb to 159 in chicken. Now en-UShere is what you all have been en-US waiting for, my personal all-en-US time favorite recipe for Roasten-US-en-US ed Spring Lamb a la Costa.en-USRoasted Leg Of lamben-USIngredientsen-US 1 5-6 pound bone-in leg of en-US lamben-US 1/4 cup olive oilen-US 2 tablespoons chopped fresh en-US garlic gloves (about 6 cloves)en-US 1/3 cup balsamic vinegaren-US 1/4 cup fresh squeezed en-US lemon juiceen-US 1 teaspoon salten-US 1 teaspoon black pepperen-US 2 tablespoons leaf oreganoen-US 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary en-US choppeden-US Directionsen-US In a small bowl, mix all the en-US ingredients together except en-US the lamb.en-US Make 8 or 9 small slices all en-US over the lamb. Insert the mixen-US -en-US ture in the slices and rub the en-US entire lamb with the remainen-US-en-US ing mixture.en-US Roast in a roasting pan fat en-US side down. Ridgewood Ave. Ste. 4 | Port Orange 386.275.1190 | A en-USs I have said many en-US times, back when I en-US arrived here nearly 50 en-US years ago, fishing was pretty en-US easy. en-US All that was required was en-US dead shrimp, a hook and en-US some string. Sure the catch en-US was not always prime, but en-US then as now, I was happy just en-US to be catching. Over the years en-US I did refine my methods, en-US partly because I had gained a en-US little fishing sophistication, en-US but also due to the decline in en-US fish. en-US Back then it took very little en-US talent to catch a nice meal en-US and have some fun in the en-US process. Then I would say en-US that 80 percent of the people en-US who tried, caught fish. Boy, en-US things have sure changed. en-US Now I believe 80 percent of en-US the fish are caught by 20 en-US percent of the fishermen. en-US These days you must have en-US a degree of talent if you en-US expect to catch on a regular en-US basis. In order to gain that en-US talent you must be devoted to en-US the sport. I know from my en-US mail those of you who dont en-US catch a lot of fish are not en-US devoted. Thats fine, for en-US fishing may be done by en-US anyone. en-US Many of the folks who en-US send me e-mails are not en-US aware of the effort needed to en-US become a good angler. Thats en-US OK, too. Just try and be en-US honest about your degree of en-US commitment.en-US That commitment begins en-US with your boat and how you en-US use it. If creature comforts en-US aboard your vessel are en-US important to you, underen-US -en-US stand that you will be giving en-US up some fish-ability. A cabin en-US with a head may insure you a en-US comfortable day on the en-US water, but perhaps not a nice en-US mess of fish. Once you admit en-US you are more of a boater en-US than a fisherman, you can en-US adjust your methods. en-US I always tell the boaters to en-US stick to trolling. That is an en-US easy way of fishing as you en-US take a boat ride. Now I en-US understand that when most en-US people think of trolling, they en-US focus on an electric trolling en-US motor. That may not be en-US necessary. en-US Years ago I spent a lot of en-US time successfully trolling en-US with my 90-horse Mercury en-US outboard. Back then I would en-US put out four lines baited with en-US diving or suspending plugs en-US and troll just inside or en-US outside of Ponce Inlet. en-US Trolling just beyond the en-US breakers and parallel to the en-US beach can also be productive.en-US Dragging baits in the en-US Halifax or Indian rivers can en-US pay off at times. If you are en-US using stick baits and they are en-US not working, go to either en-US spoons or jigs. Your speed en-US will be important, but you en-US may troll faster than you en-US think. If your bait is hanging en-US the bottom you are going en-US too slowly, conversely, if your en-US bait is skipping the surface, en-US you are going too fast. en-US Keeping your bait in the en-US lower portion of the water en-US column without hitting en-US bottom is optimal. At times en-US you may need to add weight en-US to achieve that. en-US During the summer en-US months our Disappearing en-US Island just west of Ponce is a en-US great place to use as a base. en-US From there, troll south to the en-US New Smyrna bridges in the en-US Indian River or north to en-US Dunlawton on the Halifax. If en-US you are a boater/fisherman, en-US take along music, food and en-US drink, and anything else that en-US will make you more happy en-US while you are on the water. en-US Remember even though 80 en-US percent of the fish are being en-US caught by the dedicated en-US anglers, that still leaves 20 en-US percent for you.
