Mr. Needle publishes Greenen-US -en-US Brevard, a site that promotes sustainability en-US and shares news about people and organizaen-US -en-US tions with concerns and ideas about the en-US future of the community.en-US We created GreenBrevard in 2004 to en-US shine a light on people and organizations en-US who are making a difference and have feaen-US-en-US tured STPS often, said Mr. Needle. Its very en-US rewarding to work with them directly, [to] en-US be able to help them grow their reach. When en-US I heard their story, I was inspired and conen-US -en-US tinue to be. People saw a need and have en-US dedicated themselves to helping sea turtles en-US survive."en-US Joining the team is Bill Sokolic, a seaen-US -en-US soned journalist with bylines in daily, weeken-US-en-US ly and monthly publications, as well as wire en-US services like the Associated Press and Reuen-US -en-US ters. en-USGraffiti in Palm Bayen-USI am sick of seeing it. CVS has some en-US on the outside of its buildings on the en-US corner of Babcock and Palm Bay Bouen-US-en-US levard in Palm Bay. I offered to paint en-US this, but was told by the manager that a en-US work order had been placed. en-US The graffiti is still there. Weeks and en-US weeks have gone by and nothing has en-US been done. Another place is a wall en-US around a housing unit, between Baben-US-en-US cock and Stack Boulevard, that has seven-US -en-US eral graffiti writings. It too has sat with en-US these unsightly writings for weeks.en-US Leaving graffiti up only encourages en-US more graffiti, making our city look en-US trashy. It is annoying that people dont en-US care. If you are one who cares, please en-US contact these places and tell them to en-US have the graffiti painted over. I dont en-US know if these messages are hate filled, en-US race filled or plots to destroy someone en-US or something. They are secret messages en-US that should be painted over. en-US Lets discourage graffiti and speaking en-US of discouraging, lets create an ordien-US -en-US nance to limit political sign postings to en-US one every 200 to 500 feet on public en-US property for the next election. This en-US year went overboard on the signs, and en-US some were too large, making driving a en-US danger to see around them.en-USOlder men still have mannersen-USI would like to respond to a rant en-US entitled Where Are Your Manners? en-US whose author claims that older men en-US lose their manners as they age. They en-US cite two examples. First, the author en-US claims that we (yes, I am an old man) en-US fail to remove our caps or hats when we en-US enter a restaurant. I take exception to en-US this, as I do not even own a hat or cap. en-US Secondly, they claims that a man is en-US supposed to stand up when a woman en-US enters the room. en-US I must admit the only time I stand en-US when anyone enters a room is when the en-US bailiff commands All rise to en-US announce a judges entry into a courten-US-en-US room. Should we as men, in this age of en-US feminism and #MeToo confer upon all en-US women the same respect that is given en-US to a judge? Would that cause us to be en-US regarded as male chauvinist pigs? I en-US used to be called one in the early 1970s en-US for holding a door open for a woman. en-US Additionally, if I were to stand up en-US upon the entry of a woman, I would be en-US at a loss to explain or justify my actions en-US to my wife. Finally, many older people, en-US including older men, suffer from en-US arthritis, making it rather painful to en-US rise and then, seconds later, to be seaten-US -en-US ed again. en-USFlorida election problemsen-USWhy are local, state, and federal elecen-US -en-US tions in Florida run differently in each en-US county? en-US Wouldnt it be more sensible to have en-US the same rules, regulations and voting en-US machines in every county? Does each en-US county pay for its voting machines? en-US That would eliminate the problems en-US involved with the county supervisor of en-US elections designing the county ballots en-US and making their own rules. Why is it en-US the way it is? A supervisor of elections en-US would still be needed to oversee the en-US election in each county, but under the en-US Department of Secretary of State. The en-US Secretary of State should be a non-paren-US -en-US tisan position. Also, I think the names en-US on the ballots for whatever office en-US should be in alphabetical order. en-US I have lived in Florida for over 35 en-US years, and have wondered about this in en-US each election because there has always en-US been some controversy.en-US Can we start a discussion about this? en-USLooking for extraterrestrialsen-USWhy would aliens want to visit us?en-US When you go to the zoo to see your en-US favorite animals, do you get in the en-US enclosure with them? Why would aliens en-US put themselves in danger to communien-US-en-US cate with a species that would be techen-US -en-US nologically inferior and likely hostile?en-US For a long time I have wanted to en-US meet an intelligent extraterrestrial, en-US because I thought they would be able en-US to help me, or help all of us, with some en-US better brain power.en-US What I realized (while waiting!) is en-US there are plenty of strange creatures en-US here on Earth that are intelligent in en-US ways other than human and we need to en-US learn to "hear" what they have to teach en-US us before we go looking out there. It's en-US all here. What if any of these creatures en-US now on Earth were originally extrateren-US -en-US restrials who crash landed?en-US Look into Ancient Sumerian culture. en-US Their clay tablet writings say we were en-US genetically engineered by extraterresen-US -en-US trials using part of their own DNA and en-US they taught us all the math and sciencen-US -en-US es. 7 en-USI en-USam thankful that 29 of my 83 years have en-US been spent in Brevard County. I traveled en-US all over the world during my 38 years of en-US military service before Terry and I retired en-US here. I worked with seniors in my last Navy en-US assignment as commander of the Naval en-US Retirement Home in Gulfport, Mississippi. en-US It was one of my most enjoyable tours and en-US persuaded me to work with the elderly in en-US my retirement. However, it was not until I en-US became Director of the Alzheimers en-US Association Chapter in Melbourne that I en-US knew this was one of the best decisions I en-US had made in my life.en-USDuring my time with the Alzheimers en-US Association Chapter, which became the en-US Brevard Alzheimers Foundation, I was en-US privileged to work with caregivers, en-US Alzheimers patients, and many wonderen-US -en-US ful senior care providers in Brevard. en-US These were fun years, though I saw where en-US there were many unmet needs. Fortuen-US -en-US nately, there were County Commissionen-US -en-US ers, local businesses, hospitals, United en-US Way, and others who believed we could en-US put better care systems and programs en-US inplace to care for our senior population. en-US Working with the County, we obtained en-US land to build three state of the art en-US dementia and adult day care centers, en-US developed one of Floridas largest elder en-US respite programs, acquired three Faith in en-US Action programs, and were awarded one en-US of the first two Americorps Project en-US Elderserve programs in the state. Much en-US of our work was copied in Iowa, Louisien-US -en-US ana, New York, and Pennsylvania, en-US demonstrating that local programs could en-US be built that were effective and capable of en-US serving others at an affordable price.en-US In 2011 we saw a need to better educate en-US and inform seniors and connect them to en-US care services. Excellent programs exist in en-US Brevard, but if people do not know about en-US them, they remain a well kept secret. To en-US make these many services known to the en-US community, Helping Seniors was en-US founded. We reprogrammed a long en-US standing weekly radio show, produced en-US new television shows, expanded our print en-US outreach, and instituted a senior helpline en-US in order to meet our mission. en-US The program is working, but I would en-US be thankful if more of the population en-US were aware of senior needs. Many en-US seniors, just as children, reach a point in en-US their lives that they need care. With en-US extended life expectancy, new needs are en-US emerging for affordable senior care en-US programs. Care programs cost money, an en-US item often short in availability. Still, en-US seniors need to advocate for themselves, en-US be involved in making their needs en-US known, and also be willing to help share en-US the cost of the nonprofits that are serving en-US the elder section of our community. en-US I believe an elder population of about en-US 250,000 requires a better senior advocacy en-US program, so I am thankful that I have the en-US energy and strength (?) to help develop en-US senior care systems and programs. The Foundation recently established an en-US Opioid Recovery, Rehabilitation and en-US Research Center to prevent overdose and en-US awareness.en-US There are 21.5 million people affected by en-US opioids, yet only 2.3 million people are en-US receiving treatment, Dr. Bhalani said.en-US In 2015, an estimated two million people en-US of prime working age were not in the work en-US force because of problems with prescription en-US opioids, according to Dr. Bhalani. The states en-US hit hardest by these issues were Ohio and Viren-US -en-US ginia.en-US He added that the top four commonly preen-US -en-US scribed opioids are hydrocodone, oxycoen-US -en-US done, Xanax and methadone.en-US What happens is it starts with some oxyen-US -en-US codone or opioid and when they cant get a en-US prescription, they go on the street, Dr. Bhalaen-US-en-US ni said. They buy it, then it becomes expenen-US -en-US sive and they go for the cheaper one. How do en-US you get the cheaper one? Heroin and cocaine. en-US Those are very easy to make.en-US In Brevard County, two to three people die en-US per week because of opioids.en-US Treatment can cost $2,400 per person each en-US year. One option is a Medicated Assisted en-US Treatment, which uses medications with en-US counseling and behavioral therapies to treat en-US substance abuse.en-US According to Dr. Bhalani, Medicated en-US Assisted Treatment is underused and helps to en-US sustain recovery.en-US The ultimate goal of Medicated Assisted en-US Treatment is to improve patient survival, en-US increase retention in treatment, decrease en-US illicit opiate use and other criminal activity en-US among people with substance use disorders, en-US increase patients ability to gain and maintain en-US employment, and to improve birth outcomes en-US among women who have substance use disen-US -en-US orders and are pregnant.en-US In Brevard County, there are between en-US 5,000 and 6,500 births a year and between 20 en-US and 25 percent of those babies are born to en-US addicted mothers.en-US To reach a Medicated Assisted Treatment en-US hotline, call (321) 320-5163. Sure we usually en-US start trouble shooting with the obvious en-US stuff like is the printer turned on? Or en-US are the cables connecting the printer to en-US the computer plugged in properly? But en-US most of the time the solution isnt that en-US obvious. And again there could be a en-US number of reasons why nothing is en-US coming out of the printer.en-US I cant print!en-US I dont think people quite understand en-US that when you get a call with a problem en-US description like that you really have no en-US idea what you are getting into because en-US lets face it on the surface it looks easy en-US enough; just go out there and fix the en-US printer. But the reality of it can be much en-US different.en-US You see, there are a ton of things that en-US have to happen right in order for a print en-US job to make it from a program to the en-US actual printer. A failure in any number of en-US different places can result in the same en-US thing no printer output. And often en-US without any error message to tell you en-US what could be going wrong. To the end en-US user it looks like a printer issue, click en-US print and nothing happens? Must be a en-US problem with the printer. Unfortunately en-US chasing down a printer problem can be a en-US time consuming and frustrating chore.en-US Lets take a look at some of the things en-US that have to be correct starting from the en-US printer and working back to the computen-US -en-US er.en-US Like I said earlier, the first things we en-US usually check are the obvious ones; is the en-US printer turned on? Is it plugged in? Is en-US there any paper loaded properly in the en-US paper tray? These are the questions that en-US we usually ask the end user over the en-US phone and most of the time the answers en-US we get are accompanied by heavy sighs. en-US Yes, its turned on and yes, plugged in. en-US I know these obvious questions can be en-US annoying but there are times when that is en-US the problem maybe a cable jiggled loose en-US and (as annoying as those questions can en-US be) checking there is the first place to en-US start. Most of the time however, the en-US problem is somewhere deeper and we en-US may end up having to set up a time to en-US connect and have a look.en-US Sometimes the issue is the ink caren-US -en-US tridge. If the printer has been sitting there en-US unused for a long period of time the en-US cartridge may be full but little en-US ink scabs have formed over en-US the nozzles preventing the ink en-US from squirting out but still en-US registering as full. That problem en-US will often manifest itself as en-US blank pages printing or lines en-US appearing throughout the en-US printed document. The fix for en-US that is often a thorough cleaning en-US (or, if the cartridge is really old, en-US a fresh ink cartridge).en-US Moving our focus away from en-US the printer and to the computer, en-US the next question we ask is can en-US the operating system (usually en-US Windows but the same concepts en-US apply to Macs) even see the en-US printer? If we take a look at the en-US printer settings in the computer we can en-US tell a lot of things right away. If the en-US operating system cant see the printer en-US then it may show up as grayed out and en-US you may have documents queued up en-US waiting for the print device to come back en-US online. For that you usually have to dig a en-US little deeper and check what ports the en-US computer is trying to use and sometimes en-US switch the ports around to get it to work. en-US (I actually see that issue quite frequently).en-US Sometimes the default printer settings en-US have been changed to a non existent or en-US virtual printer generating a save as en-US window instead of a printed document. en-US The solution is to set the correct printer en-US to the default but be sure to verify the en-US print job is going to the printer you want en-US it to when you hit print some programs en-US ignore the default printer settings in Winen-US-en-US dows and send print jobs to unexpected en-US places if you are not careful.en-US There can be many many more reasons en-US why a print job doesnt make it to the en-US printer ranging from driver problems to en-US issues relating to the program that you en-US are trying to print from. Most of the time en-US you have to dig a little deeper most en-US solutions to common computer problems en-US are not as obvious as they initially appear. en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. 17 en-USChristmas shopping for the golf enthusiasten-USIen-USts that time of year again. The moment en-US has arrived when you need to find just en-US the right gift for that special golfer in en-US your life, and you have no clue what to get. en-US Golfers are a tricky bunch. We are quirky en-US and usually go out and get what we want. en-US That makes it quite difficult for someone en-US looking to give a golf gift.en-USWith that in mind, I would like to en-US present a few different gift ideas for those en-US of you looking to give or in need of en-US presenting a list to someone.en-US Florida may be the Sunshine State, en-US but most of us know how quickly a rain en-US cloud will pop up and drench you and en-US your clubs. Thanks to Big Max Golf en-US (www.us.bigmaxgolf.com), and its line of en-US Aqua carry and cart bags your clubs and en-US belongings will stay dry even in the worst en-US of rain.en-US The Aqua line is 100 percent wateren-US -en-US proof, with plenty of room for clubs, en-US drinks, valuables and more. The carry en-US bags are ultra-lightweight and feature a en-US padded, air channel strap for comfort en-US when you walk the course. The cart bags en-US are nearly as light, and quite roomy.en-US I recently picked up one of these bags en-US and put it to a quick test. I attached the en-US rain hood over the top and proceeded to en-US turn my water hose on full blast. The only en-US thing wet was the outside of the bag. en-US Their ad shows someone water skiing en-US with the bag, showing just how well it en-US works. This is a must-have for Florida en-US golfers.en-US If your golfer likes to walk but prefers en-US not to carry, Big Max Golf also has a great en-US line of trolleys. The Blade line is ultra-en-US slim and assembles and disassembles in a en-US matter of seconds, fitting neatly into your en-US trunk.en-US en-US I drive a small Miata convertible. Until en-US now, finding a trolley that fits into my en-US trunk has been impossible, especially en-US with all the features of the Blade.en-US One thing that the professionals have en-US over us mere mortal golfers is that their en-US clubs are always custom-fit. Most en-US teachers will tell you that if your clubs en-US dont fit your swing, your body style and en-US your skill level, you will likely struggle.en-US Club Champion (www.clubchampionen-US -en-US golf.com, 888-340-7820) offers profesen-US -en-US sional fitting to every golfer of any age en-US and skill level. You can fit just one club in en-US your bag, your wedges, your putter or the en-US entire set. en-US Professional fitters use the latest en-US technology to find the right combination en-US of grip, shaft, length, and clubhead to give en-US you the most benefit from your equipen-US -en-US ment. There are over 35,000 combinaen-US -en-US tions, so they are very likely to have the en-US one that works best for you.en-US Club Champion even offers a trade-in en-US program to help you get into the best en-US equipment. Local locations are in en-US Orlando and Delray Beach.en-US en-US Putting can make or break a solid en-US round. The most overlooked part of a en-US putter is the shaft. Barney Adams, en-US founder of Adams Golf and Tight Lies, en-US has founded a new company, Breaken-US -en-US through Golf Technology (www.breaken-US -en-US throughgolftech.com, 888-211-6770).en-US For the past 50 years, the putter shaft en-US has remained virtually unchanged. en-US Adams new Stability Shaft is heavier and en-US much stiffer than your usual putter shaft. en-US The result is a shaft that delivers and en-US keeps the head of the putter square at en-US impact, improving accuracy and feel.en-US The shaft features an aluminum en-US connector allowing it to attach to any puten-US-en-US ter, regardless of the bend profile. There en-US are eight layers of high modulus carbon en-US fiber to reduce torque, and a 22-gram en-US insert that is precisely located to reinforce en-US flexural rigidity. In testing torque was en-US reduced by almost 50%. Imagine making en-US those putts wound up just a tad outside en-US the hole because the putter head twisted en-US open or closed.en-US Best of all, you dont even have to leave en-US your home. Breakthrough Golf will send en-US you a box to ship your putter to them in. en-US Turn-around time is about a week.en-US Finally, golfers love unique things. One en-US gentleman that I follow on Instagram has en-US an amazing talent for making ball en-US markers, divot repair tools, and now, en-US putters. Marc Cordeira owns and operates en-US Kraken Golf (www.krakengolf.com, en-US 617-460-9023) from his garage in en-US Massachusetts. Actually, its his wifes side en-US of the garage as it was her car that was en-US relocated to make room.en-US Marc makes unique, small batch, en-US heirloom quality golf accessories. He uses en-US CNC milling machines and lasers to en-US create items that you will not find en-US anywhere else. His attention to detail and en-US craftsmanship is second only to his en-US imagination. One of my favorites is his en-US Lego divot tool. He also made a skeleton en-US tool for Halloween. Some of his ball en-US markers include money bags, basketballs, en-US complete with texture, comic bombs, and en-US more.en-US Many of his latest works are one-off en-US custom pieces. A recent one included a en-UScustomers family crest. It is amazing. en-US Check out his Instagram account at en-US Krakengolf. 19 Celebrate Your Loved Ones with a Memorial Ad For more information call Catherine at or email ccawthon@hometownnewsol.com N en-USow I know why they call it Black en-US Friday. Did you know it all started en-US around 1950 in Philadelphia? The en-US annual Army/Navy game is played in Philadelen-US -en-US phia on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Many en-US people from the suburbs would come to the en-US city on Friday in anticipation of the game. en-USThe cities retailers decided to have large en-US discount sales to entice shoppers. The large en-US crowds of people shopping and attendees of en-US the game overwhelmed the local law en-US enforcement to control traffic. Large crowds en-US in stores also attracted shoplifters taking en-US advantage of the bedlam in stores. en-US By1961, the term Black Friday caught on en-US in the nation. Today everyone considers it a en-US great sale day lasting up to four days, but it is en-US also the slowest restaurant day of the year. en-US Everyone is shopping, not going out to eat. en-US Yes, more than 200 million people will take en-US advantage of the savings. All 200 million, en-US except me. en-US OK, I know everyone loves Black Friday en-US and all the special buys. But why did I pay en-US $45.39 for a gallon of milk? Let me explain. I en-US get up every morning at 5 a.m.; cant help en-US myself, just a habit of years of going to work en-US early in restaurants. This particular morning en-US I decided to treat my family to French toast en-US and noticed we had used all the milk on en-US Thanksgiving Day. No big deal. I would run en-US to Walmart down the street, which is open en-US 24 hours and get right back. BIG MISTAKE. en-US I pulled into the parking lot as I have so en-US many times before at this time and was en-US surprised at the number of cars in the lot. I en-US noticed people with three and four carts full en-US of merchandise loading their cars. Hmmm, en-US must be a special early bird sale of some en-US kind. en-US You guessed it, Im not a Black Friday en-US shopper and will never be again. I entered en-US the store on the food side and got swept up en-US in a crowd of people going down the main en-US isle. Instead of food that is usually displayed, en-US there was everything but food. I managed to en-US get to the back of the store where the milk en-US was stored and grabbed a gallon. en-US I headed back into the mob to try and cash en-US out. Thats when I found myself in front of a en-US table with some kind of electronic games. I en-US picked it up and people were trying to take it en-US out of my hand. I held on to it as if it were en-US gold, not knowing what it was. I made it to en-US the cashier and my bill came to $45.39. I was en-US too embarrassed to say anything, so I just en-US paid and left. en-US When I got home, my wife asked me why en-US I bought a childrens electronic frog game. I en-US played it cool and said, Oh I thought it en-US would be nice to give it to Toys for Tots. en-US Please dont tell her . I made the French en-US toast for breakfast with my $45.39 gallon of en-US milk and promised myself I would never go en-US shopping on Black Friday again, its too en-US expensive. en-US Try this French toast recipe; youll love it.
