Once en-US they allow themselves to become creative, they en-US are instantly hooked and an overall sense of en-US pride shines through.en-US The Promise Creative Arts Center opened en-US its doors over the summer and has since en-US offered twice-daily classes for the residents of en-US Promise in Brevard, an independent living en-US community for young adults with special en-US needs.en-US In addition to providing classes for resien-US -en-US dents, the Promise Creative Arts Center in en-US West Melbourne offers community adult art en-US classes throughout the month, covering a wide en-US range of art mediums.en-US Our goal is to be able to call this the only en-US Mixed-Media Art Studio on the east coast of en-US Florida, said Diane Marra, a local artist and en-US volunteer at the Promise Creative Arts Center. en-US When you take a class with us, you not only en-US get to make a beautiful, original piece to take en-US home, but youre also supporting our art proen-US -en-US gram and the young adults who live here at en-US Promise. en-US MELBOURNE Starting this en-US year, the Melbourne Regional en-US Chamber will recognize local en-US women who are making a positive en-US impact in Brevard County with its en-US inaugural Women on the Rise en-US awards.en-US The Melbourne Regional Chamen-US -en-US bers Women of Excellence council en-US organized this event in which 12 en-US finalists will be celebrated and four en-US women will win a Women on the en-US Rise award.en-US The awards banquet is scheduled en-US to begin with networking at 5:30 en-US p.m. and the program following at en-US 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the en-US Crowne Plaza Melbourne-Oceanen-US-en-US front, 2605 N. en-USKangaroo court or Senate?en-USI am very upset about how the Kavanaen-US -en-US ugh hearing is being conducted by Senaen-US-en-US tor Grassley.en-US I cannot believe that the FBI has not en-US been asked to reopen their background en-US check. en-US I cannot believe that no other witnesses en-US have been called. en-US We know that Kavanaugh is lying about en-US his drinking. There are too many, men en-US and women, who say he was a party boy. en-US So what else is he lying about? en-US Grassley & McConnell intend to push en-US Kavanaughs nomination through, no en-US matter what. en-US This is NOT fair. en-US It is not fair for Grassley to bring in a en-US prosecutor to question Ford instead of en-US questioning her directly by Republicans en-US on the committee. This is like a kangaroo en-US court instead of a Senate hearing.en-USJustice by voting your feelingsen-USWe see in Washington, D.C., that judgen-US -en-US ing people by the Senate does not require en-US knowledge or proof beyond a reasonable en-US doubt. en-US This body has members that have en-US already sensed their feelings, from which en-US their pronouncements of guilt, innocence en-US and worthiness are determined. en-US Progress in this sense can extend to en-US everyday justice. There are many instancen-US-en-US es where similar decisions may be made. en-US Polls are used now to assess and vote en-US for the best restaurant or the worst actor en-US or the most heinous villain by sampling a en-US small group to proclaim the belief of the en-US whole country or even the entire world! en-US Little thought is given to how random en-US this sample might be or if it possibly yields en-US the correct answer.en-US For the truly evil-doer, when the poll en-US favors killing the bad person, the death en-US penalty would be carried out immediately, perhaps with 95 percen t required for death (2 percent against and 3 percen t en-USundecided). The prohibition against cruel en-US and unusual punishment (of the English en-US tradition) would be ignored.en-US Some might object that nothing is en-US known about the proof of guilt or validity en-US of the evidence. Others might say that one en-US should get in touch with your sensitive en-US feelings to know what must be done. en-US The nation is ready for this change, as en-US we learn from the evening (and round the en-US clock) news. Life is too short for lengthy en-US decisions by a bunch of legal scholars. Let en-US us look to our future, when decision effien-US -en-US ciency is judged by how fast it occurs.en-USThank you, Good Samaritanen-USI lost my purse while shopping at en-US WalMart. en-US When I got home I had to call my credit en-US card company to cancel my card. en-US I called the police to ask about my en-US license, the policeman was very helpful. en-US The next day I went out my front door en-US and found my purse, with everything in it, en-US on a chair in my entrance way. en-US 8 The fall listing of mixed-media public en-USart classes at the Promise Creative Arts en-US Center ranges from art journaling and en-US gelli monoprinting to mixed-media canen-US -en-US vas art and painting classes. Ms. Kessler en-US and her staff provide detailed instrucen-US -en-US tion, and not everyone creates the same en-US design its up to each participant to en-US decide what they want to make.en-US We have a lot of fun in here, if you en-US cant tell! said Ms. Marra, holding up en-US some of the unique pieces past students en-US have made.en-US The construction build-out for the en-US Promise Creative Arts Center was comen-US -en-US pleted with the help of a $100,000 A en-US Community Thrives grant that Promise en-US won from an online video contest funden-US -en-US ed by The Gannett Foundation.en-US Before exploring the Art Zone Studio, en-US which is where the art magic happens, en-US guests of the Creative Arts Center enter en-US through the vibrant Killian Stark Art en-US Gallery, which was named in honor of en-US the grandmothers of one Promise resien-US -en-US dent. The gallery features work made by en-US local and consignment artists, as well as en-US collaborative pieces made by Promise en-US residents, all of which is for sale.en-US The studio and the art porch, which en-US was sponsored by Cocoa & Coastal en-US Hyundai, are also available to rent out for en-US private painting parties, events and en-US team-building classes, such as one had en-US by the Melbourne Chamber of Comen-US -en-US merce Ambassadors last month.en-US Attendees of the community adult art en-US classes may bring their own drinks and en-US snacks to a class, as well as alcohol, for en-US classes marked 21 and up.en-US All classes are first-come, first-served, en-US and participants must pre-register via en-US the Promise Creative Arts Center Faceen-US -en-US book page.en-US All of the money generated from art en-US classes, private events and pieces sold in en-US the gallery filters back into the Promise en-US art program, so the idea is for the center en-US to eventually become a self-sustaining en-US operation.en-US That is actually the goal for all 10 busien-US -en-US ness-social enterprises that Promise in en-US Brevard has planned, which began with en-US the Promise Treasures Thrift Shoppe, en-US which opened in October 2014 and en-US employs 10 Promise residents.en-US Our main goal at Promise is not only en-US to provide a safe, affordable place to live en-US for our 126 young adults with special en-US needs, but also to provide each and every en-US one of them with a job whether that is en-US out on the community or at one of our en-US business-social enterprises, said Betsy en-US Farmer, co-founder of Promise in Breen-US -en-US vard, alongside her son, Luke, 32, who has en-US Down syndrome. Our Arts Center is just en-US one of those opportunities.en-US During their weekly art classes, Promen-US-en-US ise residents work independently, as well en-US as collaboratively, which helps with their en-US social skills and the development of a en-US piece, according to Ms. Kessler.en-US We came up with this blue jean project en-US where Promisers painted their handprint en-US on a pair of jeans and added the things en-US they love most in their lives since moving en-US here, said Ms. Kessler, pointing to an en-US exhibit of hanging jeans in the gallery. en-US For some, this is their first time living en-US away from home.en-US "One Promiser learned how to cut the en-US wood we used to make some of our pieces en-US and is now the best sander we have here," en-US Ms. Kessler continued.en-US "Its all about providing our residents en-US with as many opportunities as possible en-US and giving them a chance to shine," Ms. en-US Marra added. en-US Through the 40-something Promisers en-US Ive known while volunteering here, I en-US always like to ask what types of things en-US they liked to do before moving to Promen-US-en-US ise. Many of them have said, Nothing. en-US Ms. Marra said. They have a brand-new en-US life now and are experiencing opportunien-US -en-US ties never thought possible. en-US 13 en-USOen-USne concept that a lot of people have en-US trouble wrapping their head around en-US when it comes to computers is the en-US idea that they can behave differently from one en-US day to another.en-USSure, I can see how it can be surprising to en-US click a link that youve clicked a hundred en-US times before only to have something else en-US happens but the fact of the matter is things en-US can and often do change. Operating a en-US computer is more like driving a car than en-US using something like a DVD player or a en-US toaster sometimes you have to take a en-US detour when driving your car whereas en-US operating a DVD player or toaster involves en-US the same steps every time.en-US Having a computer spontaneously change en-US a setting is actually pretty common and can en-US usually be traced to an update or some en-US other background task that has decided for en-US whatever reason to change that setting. en-US Perhaps an update caused whatever setting en-US in question to revert to its defaults even if en-US the defaults in question have never been en-US seen before. The end result is the machine en-US seems to act like it has a mind of its own.en-US Sometimes it doesnt even have anything en-US to do with your computer. For instance, sites en-US like Yahoo and the Yahoo web mail page are en-US subject to change at a moments notice. en-US Thats because the yahoo page is actually en-US taking place on another computer altogethen-US -en-US er everything you see on your screen is en-US actually happening on Yahoos servers en-US somewhere out there in cyberspace.en-US That means sometimes you are going to en-US open your email and they will have rolled en-US out a new layout and things will look en-US different. It happens from time to time and en-US the reason it happens is the Yahoo mail en-US system (along with others like AOL.com, en-US XFinity and gmail) all have a staff of people en-US who sit in cubicles all week long maintainen-US -en-US ing the system and making changes.en-US These web based portals are super busy en-US with sometimes millions of people accessen-US -en-US ing them simultaneously and that means en-US there have to be people behind the scenes en-US running things. en-US The people running things are making en-US changes on a daily basis just to keep things en-US running smoothly and most of the time en-US those changes are transparent and you dont en-US see them. But sometimes the engineers en-US running things can make a change that is en-US visible and when that happens thats when en-US people get confused. en-US Maybe they logged into their email and en-US now the print button is in a different place en-US than it was yesterday or the layout of their en-US mail box is different in some way. en-US When that happens its no cause for panic en-US everything is fine! Sure it can be a bit en-US confusing at first but keep in mind that if en-US youre connected to any type of web based en-US service (like AOL email or Yahoo mail) that en-US none of what you are seeing is actually en-US happening on your computer. All your en-US computer is in charge of doing at this point en-US is opening the web address and displaying en-US the content in your browser (Internet en-US Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, etc.) the way en-US theyve packaged it.en-US That covers things that are hosted on the en-US web but what about locally? Whats en-US happening when a setting on your computen-US -en-US er itself changes and things look different?en-US Not as common as changes on a web en-US hosted service but occasionally you may en-US turn your machine on and find your icons en-US moved around or perhaps the resolution en-US isnt what it was set at yesterday. Why do en-US changes like that happen? en-US Well there can be any number of reasons en-US why a setting will change on the local en-US machine. Often when updates are applied en-US for instance, the update overwrites its en-US original code with updated code and reverts en-US all the settings back to the defaults. Then en-US you have to back in and adjust things back en-US to the way you want them. Not very good en-US programming there but not all programen-US -en-US mers write quality code. And every update en-US that gets applied was written by a different en-US coder! en-US When something on your computer en-US suddenly looks different from the way it did en-US before its important to keep these things in en-US mind.en-US You, as the operator, have the controls to en-US get things back on course when things look en-US different just like you have to steer your car en-US to get to your destination when your rout en-US changes.en-US Its up to you, the driver, to figure out how en-US to get to where youre going when you run en-US into a detour, its just with the computer the en-US signs are different.en-US Sean McCarthy can be reached at en-US 888-752-9049 or en-US help@ComputeThisen-US en-US Online.com. en-USVeteran, performer celebrates 100th birthdayen-USMELBOURNE On Nov. 25, Anthoen-US-en-US ny Tally Mattesi, an Army Air Corps en-US veteran and singer, will turn 100-years-en-US old. The Melbourne resident is looking en-US forward to celebrating his birthday with en-US family and friends from Florida, other en-US states and Canada during a private dinner en-US party.en-US Tally has three children, two of whom en-US call Brevard home, four grandchildren, en-US two great-grandchildren and 12 nieces.en-US Tallys parents immigrated from Italy to en-US the Bronx. All these years later, he can still en-US remember their home address in a little en-US Italian neighborhood. When they moved en-US from that neighborhood to another, he en-US was given the nickname that has stuck en-US with him ever since. Everyone calls him en-US Tally, which is short for Italian, except for en-US his grandchildren. They call him Poppy. en-US Performing has always been a part of en-US Tallys life. As a boy, he sang and danced en-US on the bar in a speakeasy for money. He en-US recalls making more money performing en-US than he did shining shoes atop his shine en-US box, even though he only knew one tune en-US at the time.en-US When Tally was 17-years-old, he went en-US to Manhattan looking for work. In the en-US years that followed, he drove limos and en-US trucks and delivered restaurant menus.en-US In September of 1942, Tally was drafted en-US to serve in World War II. He spent the en-US next three and a half years as a flight engien-US -en-US neer in the Army Air Corps. He clocked en-US 1,000 flight hours in B-17s and B-29s en-US training pilots in the skies over New Mexen-US -en-US ico. Sometimes, his crew performed 50 en-US takeoffs and landings a day.en-US After the service, Tally went back to his en-US old job for a year and then worked for a en-US hardware store. One day he ran into a en-US man whose shoes he used to shine. He en-US went to work for him driving grocery en-US trucks and stayed for the next 33 years. en-US Over the years, Tally saw a few famous en-US faces, including Miss America (circa en-US 1975), Vice President Spiro Agnew, Micken-US-en-US ey Mantle and John D. Rockefeller. Each en-US meeting was unique and unplanned.en-US Tally met his wife, Carmela Mattesi, en-US when they were teenagers. He remembers en-US sharing a pizza with her during their first en-US date. The couple got married in 1943 via a en-US football wedding, during which homeen-US -en-US made sandwiches were tossed to guests, en-US just like one would throw a pigskin.en-US She was a beautiful woman, Tally said.en-US Tallys family liked to travel. They visiten-US -en-US ed the Catskills during yearly family vacaen-US -en-US tions. Tally also visited Las Vegas, San en-US Francisco, Hawaii, Naples, Rome, and en-US Capri while on anniversary trips with his en-US wife of 33 years. en-US Later in life, Tally moved to Kingston, en-US New York where he would ski on Hunter en-US Mountain. He called those six acres in the en-US Catskills home until 1989.en-US Carmela passed in 2007. That same en-US year, Tally moved to Melbourne to be en-US near two of his children.en-US All my friends, they said Id be back in en-US a year, but Im still here, he said.en-US These days, Tally spends as much time en-US with his children as he can. He may be en-US celebrating a triple digit birthday, but he en-US still keeps busy. Four times a month, he en-US sings at the Grand Villa Senior Living en-US Community. After he performs 10 songs, en-US the audience usually joins him in a sing-en-US a-long.en-US Tally knows far more songs then he did en-US as a boy, but Frank Sinatra is his favorite en-US artist.en-US He was the tops, Tally said about the en-US Chairman.en-US As he approaches his 100th birthday, en-US Tally takes life day by day. Singing keeps en-US the performer and his audiences in good en-US spirits. Looking back, the soon-to-be cenen-US-en-US tenarian sounds very content.en-US I had a very good life, he said.en-US By Christine Edwardsen-USFor Hometown Heroes en-USPhoto courtesy of Helen Baudouinen-USAnthony 'Tally' Mattesi will celeen-US -en-US brate his 100th birthday on Nov. en-US 25, 2018 at a party where he will en-US be surrounded by family and en-US close friends. en-USMeat Shoot bingo helps Police Departmenten-USBREVARD COUNTY American en-US Legion Riders Chapter 1 in Titusville, a en-US program of the American Legion, en-US donated $500 to the Titusville Police en-US Departments Youth Program on Sept. en-US 19. The money, which goes to help en-US local youth in programs like the en-US Explorers Program, was raised by the en-US organizations monthly Meat Shoot.en-US The game varies slightly from tradien-US-en-US tional bingo. Players only need to get en-US three numbers in a row, instead of five, en-US but with no free spaces. The traditional en-US BINGO! call is replaced with en-US MEAT! and players can then choose en-US from an array of pieces of chicken, en-US steak, hot dogs, fish, and more. There en-US are 12 sets of games with three games en-US within each set. With a usual 52 pieces en-US of meat bought beforehand it allows en-US for approximately 36 pieces to be won, en-US although they generally find ways to en-US give out the remainder of the meat.en-US Each set costs $1 per card and at the en-US end of the game all proceeds beyond en-US the cost of the meat go to a predeteren-US -en-US mined nonprofit chosen at the chapters en-US monthly meeting. en-US The American Legion is widely en-US known for its meat shoots, which often en-US range from state to state depending on en-US where theyre held; often involving en-US participants shooting at targets to win. en-US The ALR in Titusville, however, uses a en-US more universal, less skill set required en-US game: bingo. Only instead of cash prizen-US -en-US es or gifts, participants play for meat. en-US Yes, its a pretty crazy thing, Jay en-US Pannier, Second Vice of the Legionen-US-en-US aires and Secretary of the American en-US Legion Riders in Titusville, said. But, en-US we have a lot of fun and are proud to be en-US able to give back to the community. en-US And, we hope to see more of the public en-US now that we are a non-smoking facilien-US -en-US ty.en-US We are indebted to the members of en-US American Legion [Riders] Post 1 for en-US their generous donation to help our en-US local kids, Titusville Police Chief John en-US Lau said. They are an amazing group en-US who first served their country and now en-US their community.en-US The ALR are active members of the en-US American Legion. They also have two en-US other programs, The Sons of The en-US American Legion, made up of men en-US whose relatives served in the military, en-US and The American Legion Auxiliary, en-US made up of women whose family has en-US served. Both programs promote famien-US-en-US ly-oriented motorcycling activities en-US while honoring military and veterans en-US at various ceremonies. They also supen-US-en-US port local charities of the community.en-US Their meat shoot, which has been en-US going on for around five years, hosts as en-US many as 30 people and is available to en-US the public. It is held on the third Saturen-US -en-US day of each month at 1 p.m. The post en-US also hosts lunch five days a week and en-US dinner three nights a week.en-US The American Legion Post 1 is locaten-US -en-US ed at 1281 US-1 near Parish Hospital en-US and has recently become a non-smoken-US-en-US ing venue. en-US For more information you can visit en-US the groups Facebook page at or call en-US (321) 269-9959.en-US By Josh Whiteneren-USFor Hometown Heroes en-USPhoto courtesy of American Legion Riders en-USBrad Parsons, Director of the American Legion Riders, presents en-US donation check to the Titusville Chief of Police John Lau while other en-US riders look on.

This Prohibien-US-en-US tion era recommendation led to the creen-US -en-US ation of the FBI National Academy in 1935.en-US Today, the 10-week program provides en-US coursework in intelligence theory, terroren-US -en-US ism and terrorist mindsets, management en-US science, law, behavioral science, law en-US enforcement communication, and forensic en-US science. The curriculum serves to improve en-US the administration of justice in police en-US departments and agencies at home and en-US abroad and to raise law enforcement stanen-US -en-US dards, knowledge and cooperation globalen-US -en-US ly. COCO A BEACH OCEANFRONT Blue Energy T eam Tobacco free policy creates worksite wellness en-USThe Florida Clean Indoor Air Act en-US (FCIAA) was enacted in 1985 with the puren-US -en-US pose of protecting people from the harmful en-US effects of secondhand smoke (SHS). In 2002, en-US 71 percent of Floridas citizens voted for a en-US constitutional amendment to prohibit smoken-US -en-US ing in all enclosed indoor workplaces. The en-US smoke free law became effective July 1, 2003. en-US Fifteen years later, does your worksite have a en-US Tobacco Free policy? en-US Secondhand smoke contains hundreds of en-US chemicals known to be toxic or carcinogenic en-US (to cause cancer). Research shows there is no en-US safe level of SHS and even brief exposure can en-US be harmful. Secondhand smoke causes more en-US than 40,000 deaths in nonsmokers every year en-US and the majority of those deaths, 82 percent, en-US are from heart disease. en-US Employees are valuable assets. A written en-US Tobacco Free worksite policy is one of the en-US most supportive actions employers can take en-US to create worksite wellness. It helps employen-US -en-US ees stay healthy and productive while restricten-US -en-US ing access and social pressures to use tobacco en-US at work. en-US Do you know an employee that takes a en-US smoke break more than twice a day? If so, en-US that employee is being paid to satisfy their en-US addiction to nicotine at a rate roughly equal en-US to 8 percent of their salary. A Tobacco Free en-US Worksite policy protects the employer from en-US lost productivity, creates equity among en-US employees and is good for smokers and nonen-US -en-US smokers alike. A 2015 tobacco policy survey en-US conducted with members of the Society for en-US Human Resource Management found that en-US only 30 percent of participants surveyed limen-US-en-US ited smoking breaks. This hurts productivity en-US and employee morale.en-US A Tobacco Free policy is a compassionate en-US act that supports employee wellness. It en-US encourages smokers to cut back on their en-US smoking and it may be the incentive they en-US need to quit. Nearly 70 percent of smokers en-US would like to quit; and many may quit multien-US -en-US ple times before success is achieved. en-US A Tobacco Free Worksite Policy does not en-US require employees to quit, but it should make en-US employees aware of quit opportunities; like en-US tobacco cessation class schedules and Tobacen-US -en-US co Free Floridas Quit Your Way cessation en-US program. Quit Your Way can be reached by en-US calling 1-877-822-6669.en-US If you are an employer looking for guiden-US -en-US ance on developing a Tobacco Free Worksite en-US Policy, here are some tips to consider:en-US Smokers usually congregate on breaks and en-US socialize as well as smoke. Smokers should be en-US granted the same number and length of en-US breaks as other employees. Nonsmokers typien-US-en-US cally carry the workload for co-workers who en-US are smoking on the clock. en-US Tobacco cessation counseling doubles a en-US persons quit success rate. Quit Your Way is en-US free! Employees may be eligible for free cessaen-US -en-US tion aids like nicotine replacement patches or en-US lozenges. Different types of counseling are en-US available including text reminders, web-en-US based, 24 hour phone access, and classes. en-US Quitting can take several attempts (the en-US average is 8-11 times) and employees en-US attempting to quit should be encouraged to en-US keep trying.en-US Worksite policies should prohibit the use en-US of all tobacco products, including E-Cigaen-US-en-US rettes, or Electronic Nicotine Delivery Sysen-US-en-US tems (ENDS).en-US E-Cigarettes are not an FDA approved en-US smoking cessation device; they are an alteren-US -en-US native nicotine delivery system that will en-US maintain or regenerate a persons addiction to en-US nicotine.en-US Refillable Electronic Nicotine Delivery en-US Systems can be used to vape other drugs, en-US most commonly marijuana.en-US Employers can arrange an onsite Quit en-US Class for employees by calling the Everglades en-US Area Health Education Center at en-US 1.877.819.2357. The Tools to Quit class is en-US only 2 hours long and can help people who en-US are on the fence about quitting or want to en-US make a quit attempt.en-US Regularly post quit information for en-US employees via all communication channels. en-US It will remind them they are included in your en-US effort to establish a culture of wellness. en-US A Tobacco Free Worksite Policy protects en-US your employees, customers, vendors and visien-US-en-US tors from exposure to secondhand smoke. en-US A Tobacco Free policy protects the en-US employers financial investment and their en-US most valuable resource, the employee.en-US Creating a Tobacco Free worksite is not a en-US one size fits all undertaking. Implementing a en-US policy takes planning and intention spanning en-US several months to a year for large organizaen-US -en-US tions. It should be a process of building up to en-US a predetermined start date that celebrates en-US quitting like the Great American Smokeout en-US or a New Years Resolution. A Re-Opening, a en-US New Management, a move, or a Grand en-US Opening can also be the perfect time to en-US implement a Tobacco Free Worksite policy. en-US Call your local Tobacco Free Florida Tobacco en-US Prevention Program for more information. en-US In Indian River call 772-577-3701, or email en-US ien-US nfo@tfp-indianriver.org en-US.en-US For Hometown Newsen-USnewsml@hometownnewsol.comen-UScargo net and other obstacles to complete en-US the course.en-US Commander Claycomb has worked in en-US law enforcement for 27 years.
