Group creates database for plant-based menu en-USBREVARD A little over three years en-US ago, Indian Harbor Beach resident en-US Keenun Barley started a small, private en-US Facebook group for a few friends who en-US wanted to share plant-based recipes, post en-US pictures of restaurant meals or ask quesen-US -en-US tions about plant-based eating.en-US As that groups membership grew to en-US more than 600 members, with another 50 en-US on the waiting list as of Sept. 6, its popuen-US-en-US larity prompted Ms. Barley to create a en-US website and public Facebook page geared en-US toward similar topics.en-US The website, www.plantbasedbrevard.en-US com, launched Sept. 4 while its companen-US -en-US ion Facebook page, Plant-Based Brevard, en-US became available earlier this year.en-US The driving force behind the website is en-US to offer a database of restaurants in Breen-US -en-US vard County that lists each restaurants en-US vegan menu items. The website also en-US includes an event calendar and a blog that en-US features restaurant reviews and profiles of en-US local vegan residents.en-US To go along with the restaurant theme, en-US Plant-Based Brevards Facebook page en-US highlights eateries and stores that are en-US offering plant-based items, restaurant en-US specials and events.en-US Everybody kept asking the same quesen-US -en-US tions [about restaurants], Ms. Barley said en-US of the original groups members.en-US Eventually it became evident that we en-US needed to create a shareable database for en-US anyone in the area who needed or wanted en-US all the info that we share in our group, so en-US here we are! Plant-Based Brevards weben-US -en-US site adds. We are all very excited to offer en-US these resources to the residents of our en-US county and all who visit.en-US Like the original Facebook group, en-US Plant-Based Brevards new website and en-US Facebook page are targeted not only en-US toward people who already eat vegan en-US diets, but also omnivores who want to try en-US more meatless dishes or find meals they en-US can enjoy with a vegan family member.en-US The open format is meant to be welen-US -en-US coming and focused on food only not en-US nutrition, animal rights or related issues en-US that sometimes come up in vegan food en-US groups and can lead to criticism of a peren-US -en-US sons choice to eat vegan only some of the en-US time, or to eat vegan food that could be en-US considered junk food, Ms. Barley en-US explained.en-US The website currently features more en-US than 25 full listings and about 30 listings en-US that have been partially completed. en-US As there are at least 100 more to add, en-US the group is looking for volunteers who en-US can help call restaurants to collect inforen-US -en-US mation on their menus, Ms. Barley said.en-US Any restaurant that has vegan menu en-US options can be included in the database.en-US I really wanted to show people that en-US there are lots of options right here in Breen-US -en-US vard County, said Ms. Barley, who moved en-US to the Space Coast from Orlando four en-US years ago. I can eat anywhere here and en-US Im not just talking about salads and vegen-US -en-US gie burgers. en-US Things are changing here in such a big en-US way and Im just thrilled to be a part of it, en-US Ms. Barley added.en-US In providing information about local en-US restaurants to residents and visitors, en-US Plant-Based Brevard has also helped en-US restaurants expand their customer base, en-US Ms. Barley noted.en-US After recently volunteering to serve as a en-US taste tester for a new vegan cheese pizza at en-US NY Pizza Spot & Italian Kitchen in West en-US Melbourne, for example, Ms. Barley made en-US a post about the experience on Facebook en-US and it helped the restaurant swiftly sell en-US numerous vegan pizzas.en-US For more information, visit en-US www.planten-US -en-US basedbrevard.comen-US.en-US By Jamie Desena-McFarlanden-USFor Hometown News en-USwelcomes Elks and guests to their lodge, en-US 211 S. Here is what they en-US say: The democrats use the gangs to force en-US the voters to the polling booths to keep en-US them in power, hence they need the gangs, en-US the gangs need their territory hence the en-US constant wars.en-US The police tell us that the Democratic en-US rule has resulted in lenient laws, they en-US arrest people that should be put in jail but en-US they plead out and go back out on the en-US street, even in the case of a serious offense en-US the judge will give them a soft sentence so en-US the gang member will know that there en-US will not be a major penalty facing him for en-US the various crimes: drugs, prostitution, en-US assault, robbery, etc. All of these can be en-US pleaded away. en-US Until there is a realistic approach to en-US political change and law enforcement, en-US nothing will change. en-US So in the case of Chicago . nothing en-US will change.en-US They, such as the Democrats in charge, en-US always have like the liberal law enforceen-US -en-US ment. There is no remedy to what the polen-US-en-US iticians have created. en-USCell tower worries residents en-USWe are very concerned about the en-US 225-feet-high tower erected in 2015 for en-US emergency 911 communication improveen-US -en-US ments.en-US It is in south Satellite Beach between en-US Satellite Avenue and Indian Harbour en-US Beach's Martesia Subdivision. en-US The county actually put it near the ball en-US field where kids play in a residential comen-US -en-US munity. en-US Why???? en-US Recently the tower added five M/W en-US dishes to it. We are unable to get a concise en-US answer from either the county or the city en-US of Indian Harbour Beach if there will be en-US more additions to the tower, thereby en-US increasing the radio frequency output. en-US Does it have the potential to be a health en-US hazard? en-US It currently glows red lights at night, en-US and is ruining our property's value. Resien-US -en-US dents in the surrounding area should en-US attend public meetings or this tower or it en-US may end up supporting five major cell en-US companies. en-US Involved parties claim residents en-US received letters two years ago but I have en-US not found one neighbor who received the en-US notice of install. en-US The tower, in the near future, would en-US generate revenue from companies leasing en-US space. en-US Is there a cancer risk here long term? en-US Please stay involved so that this tower en-US does not support anymore entities. en-US Contact city hall at Indian Harbour en-US Beach for more details. en-US Your health and that of your family may en-US depend on your involvement or lack of . en-US Thank you.en-USPolitical decisions are downfall en-USThere are major historical problems en-US that politicians have given us.en-US Think about this: Berlin has fallen to en-US the Allies and Russia, Franklin Delano en-US Roosevelt, beloved by America and has en-US passed away and made many agreements en-US with his partner Joseph Stalin although en-US Britain's Prime Minister Winston Churen-US -en-US chill did not like him. We appear to have en-US an alliance that we could not break, howen-US -en-US ever one of our generals, Gen. George en-US Patton, made a statement that we should en-US drive the Russians out and keep driving en-US them until we reached the Russian border. en-US This of course got him relieved but was en-US he right? en-US Our agreement that FDR had made en-US gave Stalin all of eastern Europe and half en-US of Germany.en-US At the conclusion of the Korean conflict en-US Gen. Douglas MacArthur, who had been en-US commanding the entire Eastern Comen-US -en-US mand, including Japan, recommended to en-US the president that we should enter North en-US Korea and defeat them. He was relieved en-US of his command in disgrace, but was he en-US right?en-US In the Vietnam conflict we never went en-US on offense, although we were defending en-US South Vietnam what War can be won by en-US any military in any conflict against any en-US opponent if that military never goes on en-US the offense? The answer is none, there en-US has never been any conflict won by any en-US army in a defensive struggle. The war en-US between the North and the South was en-US predominantly fought in the south with en-US the South on defense, the only major baten-US -en-US tle fought in the north was fought where, en-US yes, in Gettsburg, and as everyone that en-US has ever read any history (most of this en-US generation hasnt) the South left that baten-USen-UStlefield in defeat, never to venture north en-US again.en-US Political decisions have been our downen-US -en-US fall in every instance, we could have en-US pinned Russia into their borders and en-US given back the Eastern countries their en-US freedom but FDR made the decision to en-US leave them under Communism. We en-US could have driven North Korea out and en-US united Korea under one leadership but a en-US political decision was made to leave the en-US north under Communism. We could en-US have driven Ho Chi Minh out of North en-US Viet Nam but a political decision was en-US made to withdraw from Viet Nam.en-US The military does not put us into these en-US situations, the people that we vote into en-US office puts us into the situation that we are en-US in now, Russia breathing down our neck en-US (thank you FDR), Iran threatening us en-US (thank you Obama), North Korea (thank en-US you every President from Truman foren-US -en-US ward), and Viet Nam (thank you Kennedy en-US and Johnson and Nixon).en-USRantsen-US & en-USRaves en-USGot something to say? en-USEmail the Hometown Rants & Raves at en-USbrevnews@hometownnewsol.comen-USThe Rants & Raves section provides readers a chance to share their thoughts. en-US en-US The opinions included here are not those of en-US Hometown News en-US or its employees.en-US Please limit your submissions to 250 words, so we can include more entries. en-US en-US Readers are asked to refrain from making libelous statements.en-USFlight Stars & Stripes en-USAlex Schierholtz/Staff photographeren-USJohn Kinney of Tank America talks to David Bean and Jose Castro en-US both of Melbourne about his tank during Honor Flight Stars & en-US Stripes on Sept. 8 at American Muscle Car Museum in Melbourne.

en-US 9 en-USDo I really need all of these desktop icons?en-USOen-USne of the questions that I am asked en-US frequently has to do with all of the en-US icons on the typical Windows en-US desktop. Arent they slowing things down? en-US I never use most of them, cant we get rid of en-US them? en-US I usually answer by explaining that most en-US of the icons on the average desktop are not en-US slowing the computer down at all but are en-US actually more like speed dial buttons on a en-US phone. Most desktop icons are just en-US shortcuts to programs buried deeper in the en-US system and are on the desktop so you dont en-US have to navigate through all sorts of menus en-US to launch a program.en-US If you look closely at the icons on your en-US desktop, you may notice that some icons en-US have a little arrow in a little white box at the en-US lower left corner of the icon. The arrow en-US itself is kind of curvy and will point to the en-US top right corner of the icon. You may also en-US notice that other icons (like the Computer en-US icon, the User folder icon, the Recycle Bin en-US Etc.) do not have the little arrow. There is a en-US big difference between the two types of en-US icons the icons with the little arrows are en-US actually just shortcuts and not the actual en-US program (or file). And shortcuts are really en-US really tiny and dont slow the computer en-US down at all!en-US But what about the icons that dont have en-US the little arrow? Are they safe to get rid of? en-US That question is a little harder to answer. en-US You see, any icon on your computer that en-US does not have the little shortcut indicator is en-US either a user file or a system file and en-US messing with it can cause problems. Icons en-US on your desktop that are not shortcuts are en-US either files that have been saved on the en-US desktop or system files that have been set en-US there by the operating system and care en-US should be taken when manipulating them.en-US Another point that I want to make is that en-US people have different ideas as to what the en-US phrase get rid of means! When someone en-US asks me to get rid of all of the unused icons en-US on their desktop what they are invariably en-US asking me to do is to delete them. Now if en-US you have been reading my column for any en-US length of time then you know how I feel en-US about deleting things from your computer en-US its not something I do casually! In fact I en-US have a saying if I were king Id have the en-US delete button stricken from the keyboard! en-US My idea of cleaning a Windows desktop by en-US getting rid of a bunch of stuff is not to en-US delete everything but leans more in line en-US with the phrase out of sight, out of mind. en-US People will watch with a puzzled look on en-US their face as I create yet another icon on en-US their desktop (a new folder), name it en-US something like Desktop Clutter and then en-US drag all of the unused icons into the new en-US folder. Then, once the desktop is down to en-US just the icons that actually get used, I drag en-US the Desktop Clutter folder and drop it into en-US the Users folder. en-US Then I usually spend the next ten en-US minutes of so explaining why I went en-US through all that trouble rather than just en-US deleting everything. My explanation really en-US boils down to habit. One of the worst habits en-US people get into with their machines is the en-US habit of deleting stuff every time they tidy en-US up. Sure its great to have a tidy desktop but en-US if you are in the habit of casually deleting en-US stuff then eventually you are going to delete en-US something you actually need. Even worse is en-US the habit some people have of emptying the en-US recycle bin every time they delete someen-US -en-US thing. Thats just a disaster waiting to en-US happen.en-US My philosophy is out of sight, out of en-US mind. Tidying up my system by sweeping a en-US bunch of unused shortcuts (and actual files en-US for that matter) into a folder and then en-US moving the folder out of sight ensures that en-US if I accidentally do get rid of something en-US that I need, I can recover it easily enough by en-US digging into the folder where I moved it. en-US Does this mean that I am completely en-US against deleting everything? No, of course en-US not. Some things are indeed trash and I en-US have no problem deleting them I just have a en-US real problem with the habit of deleting en-US things with barely a second thought. Ive en-US seen too many people delete their way into en-US too many problems. en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. COMPUTE THIS en-USSEAN MCCARTHY en-USArts district designated as of of Florida's besten-USMELBOURNE Secretary of State en-US Ken Detzner announced recently the Eau en-US Gallie Arts District in Melbourne has en-US been designated the September 2018 Floren-US -en-US ida Main Street Community of the Month. en-US Communities are selected based on their en-US development achievements and participaen-US -en-US tion in the Florida Main Street Program.en-US The Eau Gallie Arts District is a valuen-US -en-US able asset to the Florida Main Street proen-US -en-US gram, said Secretary Detzner. This en-US enthusiastic community has successfully en-US merged their appreciation of history with en-US their love of the arts.en-US The city was founded in 1860 by Wilen-US-en-US liam Henry Gleason. Gleason discovered en-US the area while traveling up the coast, and en-US loved it so much that he purchased 16,000 en-US acres. Gleason was inspired by the coquien-US-en-US na rocks along the water of the Indian en-US River Lagoon and named the city Eau en-US Gallie, which is French for rocky water. en-US The Indian River Lagoon was essential to en-US the development of Eau Gallie, as it was en-US an important hub for transporting goods en-US and passengers.en-US In 1969 citizens of the city decided to en-US merge Eau Gallie with the city of Melen-US -en-US bourne. While it is no longer its own city, en-US residents continue to recognize the area as en-US Eau Gallie. There is a strong sense of comen-US -en-US radery within the community, which has en-US led to revitalization efforts. In 2010, the en-US Eau Gallie Arts District was designated as en-US a Florida Main Street community.en-US The Eau Gallie Arts District, also en-US known as EGAD, is a mix of more than en-US 100 businesses, including galleries, retail en-US shops, restaurants and more. In our eight en-US years of being a designated Main Street, en-US we have had a tremendous impact on the en-US community, said Executive Director Lisa en-US Packard. We continue to attract new en-US businesses and demand for commercial en-US space. We developed what we call the en-US EGAD Army a dedicated group of volen-US-en-US unteers that are the engine of the proen-US -en-US gram.en-US One of EGADs most impressive projen-US -en-US ects is the creation of the Outdoor Museen-US -en-US um, made up of more than 30 murals that en-US line the streets of the community. Almost en-US everybody likes the fresh taste of en-US citrus, whether it be oranges, en-US grapefruits or tangerines. Sometimes the en-US sweetest most delicious fruit can come en-US from trees that you raised yourself in your en-US own backyard. Today, I am going to talk en-US about growing citrus in your backyard and en-US indoors!en-USWhen most people pick out their favoren-US -en-US ite oranges or grapefruit at the grocery en-US store, usually the first think they think en-US about is Florida. This delicious fruit was en-US in introduced to our wonderful state in en-US 1565 by Spanish explorers. To top it off, en-US the Orange Blossom is also our state en-US flower. Most of the fruit that is produced en-US in our state is not in south Florida but is en-US in central Florida in an area that we refer en-US to as growing Zone 9. The reason for this en-US is that in order for the fruit to get its sugar en-US sweet taste, the fruit must be subject to a en-US period of cool temperatures. While growen-US -en-US ers welcome cool weather, freezing temen-US-en-US peratures for more than four hours can en-US cause damage to the fruit. en-US There are many varieties of citrus availen-US -en-US able and it is mainly a selection of your en-US own personal choice that should deteren-US -en-US mine which flavor you should buy. Look en-US for healthy trees that have dark green folien-US -en-US age and no signs of disease or insects. en-US Once you make your purchase, it is time en-US to take your prize home and have some en-US fun.en-US Citrus like to be planted in areas that en-US have good drainage and a full day of sun. en-US If the area you have chosen for planting en-US floods during heavy rain, build up the en-US ground with some topsoil to keep the en-US roots as much above the water as possien-US-en-US ble. When planting your tree use a good en-US quality topsoil and be sure you do not en-US plant in an area that will be affected by en-US your sprinkler system. Citrus trees do not en-US like excess water and this can also lead to en-US dry fruit. Do not be tempted to water en-US your tree too often and also remember to en-US keep the area around the tree clear of any en-US grass or mulch. Any of these circumen-US-en-US stances can cause potentially lethal funen-US-en-US gus diseases to destroy your tree. You en-US should also keep weeds away from the en-US base of your trees to be sure proper drainen-US -en-US age is established. en-US Another critical ingredient for good en-US citrus growth is fertilizer. Choose a good en-US quality citrus food that has minor eleen-US-en-US ments. You also should apply a minor eleen-US -en-US ment spray that contains such ingredients en-US as iron, boron and manganese. en-US One mistake that many citrus trees en-US owners do is try to prune their trees. The en-US truth is that citrus trees should never be en-US pruned. You should just let the trees shed en-US their branches naturally. Thunderstorm en-US winds and tropical systems will naturally en-US prune the tree as it sheds its branches. en-US For those of you that have limited yard en-US space or live in an apartment, you can en-US purchase dwarf citrus trees that you can en-US grow in a sunny window or on a balcony. en-US You can purchase these trees in Turnpike en-US gift shops, airport gift shops and at gift en-US shops in many of our tourist areas. You en-US can also buy them online. Once you bring en-US your plant home, plant it immediately so en-US it does not stay in the box for long. You en-US should initially plant it in about an 8-inch en-US diameter pot that has good drainage. Use en-US a good quality potting soil such as Miraen-US -en-US cle Gro. Once your tree is well established en-US in the pot, you can transplant your tree to en-US a 5 to 25 gallon container. Remember, the en-US larger the container you use, the bigger en-US the plant will get. en-US Unlike citrus trees planted in the en-US ground, container trees will need freen-US -en-US quent watering and occasional pruning. en-US When your tree is young, if you prune a en-US couple of inches off the top, it will allow en-US the tree to spread out some instead of en-US growing tall and skinny. Do not allow the en-US tree to sit in a saucer filled with water. Be en-US sure to drain the water from your saucer en-US if you use one. en-US If you have a balcony, you can put your en-US tree outside to get much needed sunlight. en-US If you keep it indoors, choose a location en-US near a sunny window. en-US The fruit that is produced from these en-US small trees will be small and usually is not en-US as sweet as its larger counterparts but the en-US fruit is great in jellies and also for adding en-US flavor to drinks.en-US Next week I will talk a little about a disen-US-en-US ease that could potentially wipe out our en-US citrus population. That disease is canker. en-US I will see you next week with more great en-US garden tips!en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape. en-US Send e-mails to hometowngarden@en-US gmail.com or visit his Web site en-US www.en-US hometowngarden.comen-US .en-USGrow favorite citrus en-US trees indoors, backyard GARDEN NOOK en-USJOE ZELENAK en-USlicanwomen.orgen-US or by calling the 24-hour en-US line at (321) 727-1212.en-US Singles event:en-US Check out Brevard en-US Singles Meet Up for Bowling & Billiards at en-US 6 p.m. the first Sunday of every month (Oct. 7) at Brunswick Bowling Lanes, 1099 en-USN. My guest also ordered a glass en-US of Chablis.en-US Our salads and breadsticks were the en-US first to arrive, and each dressing is made en-US in house. Thats the true power en-US of marketing, its the relationships you en-US make with the people.en-US He believes that newer mediums of en-US pop-culture are resurrecting the older. en-US Shows like Netflixs Stranger Things, a en-US supernatural series set in the 80s, has en-US sparked a rekindling of role-playing en-US games like Dungeons and Dragons. en-US That show has really brought back a en-US lot of memories for a lot of people who en-US used to play, Mr. Schriber said. Originally from en-US Texas, the Ovards help bring awareness to en-US a number of different issues, using their en-US comic as a platform for positive change. en-US They rescued Tugg in 2010, after he was en-US found on the side of the road, mangled en-US and sick. Defying doctors predictions, en-US Tugg eventually pulled through. Now, the en-US Ovards help more rescue animals and en-US advocate for other awareness issues. en-US We go to kids schools, we go to chilen-US -en-US drens hospitals, old folks homes, we do a en-US lot of information on dementia and Alzen-US -en-US heimers, Mr. Ovard said. en-US The Ovards have worked on Tugg en-US with legendary comic-book artist Neil en-US Adams. Mr. Adams is best known for his en-US illustrations on the Batman series in the en-US seventies. en-US The couple has done a few shows in en-US Florida recently, but have been traveled en-US around the country to promote awareness en-US for potential rescues. en-US Its not just for us, its for everybody en-US else. Mr. Ovard said.en-US Not only was the event an annual celeen-US -en-US bration of geekdom in Brevard County, en-US but a hub for contributors; whether they en-US be artistic advocates or, like Mr. Schriber, en-US just a collective fan. en-US The affability was palpable. en-US Where else can you go and talk about en-US stuff like this? For the en-US Wednesday Warriors Golf Group of Brevard en-US County, its a group of 15 or so, that has en-US room for more.en-US The group began in 2008 when a group en-US from north and another from south Brevard en-US got together. The two groups had such fun en-US playing together that they decided it would en-US be a great idea to play together more often. en-US Wednesday being in the middle of the week en-US proved to be a great way to break up the en-US week for this bunch of mostly retired en-US golfers.en-US The name Wednesday Warriors came en-US about when the group from south Brevard en-US played in a tournament. They had to give en-US their group a name, and Wednesday en-US Warriors was chosen by the group and they en-US decided to keep it.en-US We are open to men and women aged 19 en-US and up, said member coordinator Domien-US -en-US nick Leone. The majority of our members en-US are veterans from all service branches, and en-US we currently four couples.en-US While the group is headquartered in en-US Brevard, there is no requirement that you en-US live there to be a member. In fact, the group en-US is a traveling bunch that plays as often en-US outside of Brevard County as it does in.en-US The week that I spoke to Dominick, the en-US group was heading to Orlando for the day. en-US The group car-pools to places out-of-town. en-US They do not stay overnight, preferring to be en-US out and back on the same day. Most travel is en-US no more than an hour or so drive from en-US Brevard. en-US The Warriors play every Wednesday, all en-US year round. Granted some members are en-US seasonal, but the group really wants en-US members to play each week as much as en-US possible. The bigger numbers allow en-US Dominick to get better greens fees for en-US everyone. en-US Tee times vary from week to week, but in en-US most cases are in the morning. There are en-US occasions where the group will move the en-US day it plays to accommodate holidays, en-US changes in playing conditions or to take en-US advantage of special pricing at a course. en-US Players may play any game they wish en-US between themselves. The group, as a whole, en-US does not have any monetary challenges. en-US Some players like to play for skins or a en-US Nassau or even a cold beverage. Thats en-US entirely up to those players. en-US The group plays by USGA Rules, but en-US allows some latitude. Members are also en-US given an unofficial handicap and an average en-US score, allowing everyone to see how they en-US perform against one another. en-US Pairings are made by the coordinator and en-US players are usually switched around a bit to en-US encourage everyone to meet and get to en-US know one another. Remember, the groups en-US main objective is fun and camaraderie. en-US Current members may bring a guest up en-US to two times without having them join the en-US group. A guest is anyone who is a friend, en-US acquaintance or local relative. Non-local en-US relatives may play up to four times per year.en-US Being made up mostly of retired military en-US service members, there is a bit of service en-US branch pride among the members. With en-US this in mind, the group holds an Annual All en-US Service/Civilian Challenge. Members of en-US each of the military service branches are en-US teamed against the other branches. The en-US current champion is the U.S. Army. My late en-US father would be happy. en-US In addition to the challenge, the group en-US also holds other events and socials throughen-US -en-US out the year. Many involve the member and en-US their non-playing partner. en-US If you live in, close to, or dont mind en-US driving to Brevard, you should consider en-US joining the Wednesday Warriors Golf en-US Group. Initial administrative membership is en-US just $25 and covers your membership for en-US the first five years with the group. After en-US that, its a $5 renewal fee every year, en-US beginning in year six. en-US The group would love to welcome more en-US members interested in enjoying golf and en-US great camaraderie. en-US 19 Does Your Pet Have What It Takes To Be Our PET OF THE WEEK?See our weekly winner for entry details! HTN2018HTN2018 Thornton Park offers Downtown Orlando charm en-USLong before Mickey made his Florida en-US debut in 1971, Downtown Orlando was en-US drawing tourists to the shores of Lake en-US Eola, who came to view the flocks of en-US beautiful white and black swans, cruise en-US upon the water aboard swan-shaped boats en-US and watch the colorful water ballet proen-US -en-US duced by the Linton E. Allen Memorial en-US Fountain, the citys most enduring icon. en-US Today the area known as Thornton en-US Park embraces the southwestern side of en-US the lake and offers a charming, tranquil en-US refuge within easy walking distance of all en-US the downtown core has to offer. en-US Gloria and I first discovered the oak-en-US lined brick streets of this enclave a few en-US years ago when we paid a visit to the nearen-US -en-US by Colombian consulate to renew her en-US passport. We sensed its special charm that en-US day and have returned twice in the eveen-US -en-US ning hours to watch the nighttime light en-US shoes of both the fountain and the lakes en-US musical Christmas tree during the holien-US -en-US days. For our recent weekend visit, we en-US chose to stay in a truly unique spot in the en-US heart of the neighborhood known as The en-US Verandah at Thornton Park, a former en-US complex of bed and breakfast inns that en-US now serves as a popular venue for occaen-US -en-US sional free concerts, weddings, receptions en-US and other special events. The facility en-US offers two historic structures to rent, a en-US studio apartment and a two-bedroom, en-US two-bath home with a small swimming en-US pool. We chose the latter via the Airbnb.en-US com website and found it to be the perfect en-US base for our constant wanderings, lying en-US just a block or so from the southern shore en-US of Lake Eola. Every morning I joined dozen-US -en-US ens of other downtown residents, visitors en-US and the resident swans in my walk around en-US the lake, whose broad 0.9-mile pathway en-US makes for a delightful stroll day or night. en-US Since we visited in late August, we were en-US also grateful for the Grapefruit Line of the en-US citys free downtown air conditioned bus en-US service known as LYNX Lymmo, which en-US picked us up and dropped us off just a en-US couple of blocks away on Central Bouleen-US-en-US vard, the commercial avenue lining the en-US western edge of the lake.en-US After our first morning stroll and a en-US quick dip in the pool, we boarded the en-US Lymmo to drop us off near the northern en-US edge of the lake and the dock for the popen-US -en-US ular swan paddleboats. These charming en-US four-person watercraft have long served en-US as a Downtown Orlando image, although en-US in the 1920s the boats were larger and not en-US propelled by passenger power. We peden-US -en-US dled out to the fountain for a few minutes en-US to take photos before the summer heat en-US drove us back to shore and the really en-US air-conditioned Orange County Regional en-US History Center just a couple of blocks en-US away. en-US Housed in the historic 1927 Orange en-US County Courthouse, this museum offers en-US four floors of exhibits, including the en-US building itself, designed by Floridas first en-US registered architect of Indiana limestone en-US and Georgia granite. We started off on the en-US top floor, where Gloria became enamored en-US with the story of the Florida Seminole en-US Tribe and the Pioneer Life exhibit, while I en-US really enjoyed the Citrus Industry exhibit en-US and many of the historical relics such as en-US postcards and fruit crate images. The en-US third floor offers sections on early transen-US -en-US portation and aviation, and exhibits on en-US both preand post-Disney tourism. I also en-US enjoyed the fully restored Courtroom B, en-US where I have my only photo ever taken en-US behind the judges bench (shame I didnt en-US have the robe to put on!). The second en-US floor of the museum is dedicated to Cenen-US -en-US tral Floridas African American heritage en-US as well as to traveling or special exhibits. en-US The most striking exhibit presently is en-US dedicated to the victims and survivors of en-US the Pulse Nightclub shooting two years en-US ago, with photographs, personal tributes en-US and other memorabilia created in the en-US aftermath of the tragedy. en-US We spent the rest of the afternoon wanen-US -en-US dering the streets of Downtown Orlando, en-US where we viewed the artworks on display en-US at the CityArts Factory, which is part of en-US the Third Thursday Gallery Hop downen-US -en-US town, characterized by food, drink and en-US live entertainment on the streets. Here Chef Laurent Hollaender did en-US not disappoint, having delighted diners en-US here for the last seven years. en-US We started out with an appetizer of en-US stone-oven baked naan bread topped with en-US fresh garlic, basil oil and Asiago cheese en-US and accompanied by a bowl of hummus. en-US For Glorias main dish, she ordered Chef en-US Hollaenders Seafood Cake packed with en-US bits of lobster, crab and salmon and en-US served with grilled asparagus, sweet potaen-US -en-US to fries and a roasted tomato aioli. I en-US ordered one of the daily specials, the en-US Shrimp Po-Boy (after all Im from Louisien-US -en-US ana!) which was served on very yummy en-US grilled French bread and accompanied by en-US some of the best French fries Ive had in en-US recent memory. en-US We ended our lunch with two different en-US desserts: I opted for the more healthien-US -en-US er-sounding Pineapple Sorbet (made with en-US a touch of tequila and served with a cocoen-US -en-US nut florentine cookie), while Gloria en-US enjoyed the Apple Galette, a French puff en-US pastry filled with fresh apples and topped en-US with vanilla bean ice cream (yeah, hers en-US was really decadent!). We both enjoyed en-US the mysterious and enchanting atmoen-US -en-US sphere created here by the interplay of red en-US and dark colors and wall paintings, which en-US made us feel as if we were dining in the en-US Moulin Rouge. Im basically a teetotaler en-US so I opted for the mango flavor of one of en-US these and Gloria chose a craft strawberry en-US Abita Beer (also from Louisiana!), while en-US we snacked on the Cheese Plate of sharp en-US aged merlot cheddar, Irish Dubliner en-US cheese, an olive Giardiniera mix, roasted en-US almonds, dried dates and crackers. en-US Here we sat on a comfortable couch in en-US the air conditioning and watched the en-US patrons come and go on a busy Friday en-US night.
