In the wake of several en-US mass shootings this year, including Marjory en-US Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, the en-US need for another layer of security has become a en-US pressing issue within the community.en-US The shooting in Parkland in February has reigen-US -en-US nited a national debate over gun laws and school en-US safety. Because of this, many officials are looking at en-US implementing immediate programs to keep stuen-US -en-US dents safer. en-US The new security specialist position is in en-US response to legislation Florida Gov. Rick Scott en-US signed into law in March that raised the age of en-US purchasing firearms from 18 to 21 and imposes a en-US three-day waiting period for most purchases of en-US long guns. In the summer en-US months, heavy rains wash off any fertilen-US -en-US izer applied to lawns and gardens before en-US it can be absorbed by plants and grass. en-US Instead of benefiting the plants, it ends en-US up washing off lawns and ultimately en-US into the Indian River Lagoon where it en-US can fuel algae blooms and kill fish.en-US The penalty for ignoring this regulaen-US -en-US tion is $200.en-US The city of Melbourne also reminds en-US homeowners that blowing grass clipen-US-en-US pings into stormwater drains or into the en-US streets is also subject to a $200 fine. I got the en-US kids out first so they were safe. I tried to en-US get back in there but I didnt realize how en-US fast a fire spreads and how thick the en-US smoke could be. I thought I could just en-US put something over my face, get low to en-US the ground and get in, but it was imposen-US -en-US sible.en-US I ran around the back, and the back en-US door was locked, so I took a brick and en-US broke all of the windows so that I could en-US get in and the [cats] would have a way en-US to escape, she continued. I could hear en-US them crying and I could not get in. I en-US couldnt breathe and I couldnt see anyen-US-en-US thing.en-US Palm Bay firefighters were able to resen-US -en-US cue most of the cats, and one they even en-US nicknamed Smokey for the fact that it en-US was covered in soot as they resuscitated en-US it.en-US Smokeys real name is Coco Chanel en-US and while the cats rescue made national en-US headlines from Palm Beach Post to Fox en-US News, its owner was lying in the intenen-US -en-US sive care unit at a local hospital.en-US Even my own friends didnt underen-US -en-US stand or know that it was my house that en-US burned down, Ms. Tokola said about en-US her cat on the news. I try my best to let en-US people know that other people were also en-US affected by this fire.en-US Ms. Tokola said she barely had en-US enough time to sign over power of en-US attorney to one of her sisters to care for en-US her three children before doctors put en-US her under, which was a precaution in en-US case her airway closed up.en-US During her hospital stay, she was en-US unaware of how bad the fires damage en-US was to her home that she had been renten-US -en-US ing.en-US My sister came from out of state, she en-US rushed out here as soon as she found en-US out what happened, Ms. Tokola said. en-US None of us knew what was going to en-US happen. [My sisters] were handling en-US everything for me because I was going en-US to be out for a few days. I didnt know en-US what was going to happen or what to en-US do.en-US Despite being able to save three of her en-US cats, Rorschach, Pistachio, and en-US Lucky, didnt survive the fire. Smokey en-US and Bagheera are currently being en-US taken care of by friends, while a third en-US has been adopted by a neighbor.en-US Meanwhile, Ms. Tokola is staying en-US with friends in Viera and the only posen-US -en-US session to her name is her car and a few en-US items that her fianc was able to dig out en-US of the house after the fire.en-US As soon as she was released from the en-US hospital, which was a weeklong stay, en-US Ms. Tokola said she had to appear en-US before a judge to sign over temporary en-US custody of her children to her sister. en-US Her sister lives in New Hampshire and en-US is married with no children of her own, en-US and is not financially prepared to care en-US for a family of five.en-US My sister has a GoFundMe up to en-US help with the costs of caring for my chilen-US -en-US dren, Ms. Tokola said. It is obvious that a few degrees en-US increase in the atmosphere makes weather en-US less stable, i.e. warming adds energy, (fuel) en-US to mega-storms and contributes to weather en-US conditions such as extreme drought and en-US flooding.en-US Eight years ago there seemed to be levelen-US -en-US ing off of the warming, but it was tempoen-US -en-US rary. This fueled an ultra-conservative en-US movement, perhaps supported by Big Oil en-US (mostly rich Republicans) to increase arguen-US-en-US ments against the Science. en-US Wikipedia states Oil companies orgaen-US -en-US nized a climate change denial campaign to en-US disseminate public disinformation for seven-US-en-US eral decades, a strategy that has been comen-US -en-US pared to the organized denial of the hazards en-US of tobacco smoking by the tobacco indusen-US -en-US try. en-US Read on in Wikipedias Climate Change en-US Denial and you will find other major en-US industries are linked to this denial. It is a en-US profits first mankind second attempt to en-US brainwash people into rejecting internationen-US-en-US al agreements and carbon taxes. The conseen-US -en-US quences, based on scientific predictions, will en-US be disastrous. We are already killing marine en-US life and flooding valuable lands around the en-US globe. But as it continues, future generations en-US of all life will be effected.en-US The most convincing documentary I en-US have watched is available at PBS.com and is en-US NOVAs Decoding the Weather Machine. en-US (April, 2018) en-US So . do you also believe in the Easter en-US Bunny? Perhaps you struggled with algebra, en-US chemistry or physics and dont understand en-US that models have lots of variables with lots en-US of tolerances and of course there will be en-US some deviation from predictions. If climate en-US models were perfect, we would know exacten-US -en-US ly where a hurricane will strike land and en-US whether you will get your illogical head wet en-US tomorrow.en-USClimate change is real, en-US is largely caused by humans, en-USI have to question whether this newspaen-US -en-US per is acting responsibly by publishing en-US clearly false rants or raves, that if believed en-US would lead to seriously harmful results. en-US Would en-US Hometown Newsen-US print opinions en-US that are blatantly hateful and untrue? Would en-US it print an opinion that cigarettes are not en-US harmful to your health? Would it print the en-US words of Holocaust deniers or racists? Obvien-US -en-US ously not. Then why did en-US Hometown News en-US this past month publish the rant entitled en-US Climate change is bogus; Stop believing en-US politicians.en-US Climate change is real, is largely caused by en-US humans, and is serious. These facts may be en-US uncomfortable but are true. The science en-US behind global warming is vast. It goes back en-US to a Swedish scientist named Svante Arrheen-US -en-US nius who, in 1896, concluded that fossil fuel en-US combustion may eventually result in global en-US warming. He was right.en-US The world is getting warmer. Dont want en-US to believe a Swede from the 19th century? en-US How about believing Elon Musk. For a school to hire a en-US department SRO, theyd need assistance en-US from the municipality the school is located en-US if any additional funding is needed. en-US Police departments from Melbourne and en-US Palm Bay, larger cities within the county, en-US have said they do not have sufficient manen-US -en-US power to put an SRO in every school, which en-US means security specialists will be placed in en-US those cities' elementary schools to meet the en-US demands of the new law. en-US One of the qualifications of the security en-US specialist position is that all vetted candien-US -en-US dates must attend and successfully complete en-US a five-week training that occurs over the en-US summer break. Candidates will undergo the en-US training in time to be instated in a school by en-US the start of the fall school year. en-US The security specialist initiation has been en-US advocated by all five school board members, en-US as well as exiting Superintendent Desmond en-US Blackburn, despite the opposition from en-US some parents. Board members are supporten-US-en-US ed by the argument that specialists would en-US add more security. However, some board en-US members have voiced concerns as well.en-US These security specialists will be paid en-US around $40,431 in salary and benefits. The en-US hiring process is estimated to cost the school en-US district around $1.2 million. The concern is en-US that with lower pay the market for jobs en-US might not attract the top tier recruits. en-US In discussing with some of the higher en-US individuals who would apply for this job, en-US your former law enforcementwhen we set en-US the salary at $30,0000 to $35,0000we may en-US not attract the best we may be able to en-US attract, Mathew Susin, District 4 Board en-US Member, said at board meeting on May 22. en-US Melbourne Beach Police Department is en-US taking advantage of the funding and maken-US -en-US ing up the difference by hiring an SRO as en-US opposed to a security specialist. Gemini Eleen-US-en-US mentary was approved for an SRO which en-US has eased the worry of some Gemini adminen-US -en-US istration and parents of students. Some en-US believe the districts security specialist will en-US not be as effective as local law enforcement. en-US This concern is also matched by some of en-US the community. Some worry that underpaid en-US and undertrained specialists do not imbue en-US the same type of confidence more seasoned en-USlaw enforcement can. en-US If we have $52,000 that goes to a school en-US that theres no SRO in and the idea is were en-US using these guys to fill those positionsen-US why would we not pay them the first-year en-US salary that matches that, Mr. Susin asked. en-US We may need to bring that salary up a couen-US-en-US ple thousand dollars to attract a better canen-US-en-US didate, he said. en-US Schools like Gemini Elementary, with en-US roughly 500 students and centered in smallen-US -en-US er communities, have been more vocal en-US about their concerns over the hiring criteria.en-US Were familiar with the school. Were en-US familiar with the [administration]. Weve en-US worked very well with the principle and her en-US team as well as the students. They know our en-US faces. A lot of them know us by faces or en-US know us by name. Were down there every en-US day, Detective Sergeant Melanie Griswold en-US of the Melbourne Beach Police Department en-US said. en-US Indialantic Mayor Dave Berkman was en-US asked to comment on the concerns parents en-US and administration may have for the quality en-US of training these specialists undergo. He had en-US no comment. Conversely, Satellite Beach en-US Mayor Frank Castillo, has gone on the en-US record stating he would prefer experience en-US rather than someone who took a class that en-US was 176 hours.en-US On May 16 Gemini Elementary was en-US approved for an SRO from the Melbourne en-US Beach Police Department.en-US Theyre familiar with us. Four Cs Nursery Hometown News Congratulates the Melbourne Regional Chamber on the recent Beautification Project Estate planning key to keeping money in your family en-USYen-USouve invested your life into en-US caring for their well-being. en-US You cherish them and want en-US them to mature into smart, healthy, en-US successful adults. Naturally, as they en-US become adults and grow older, your en-US authority over them recedes. They en-US make their own decisions, and you en-US just hope its for the best.en-US Your feelings dont change. They en-US are your children. And theyll always en-US be your children. You want their en-US futures to be safe and secure; you en-US want them to prosper in life. And en-US what better way to show your devoen-US-en-US tion and appreciation than by ensuren-US -en-US ing your hard-earned money and en-US investments go to themafter your en-US passing?en-US In other words, how do you keep en-US your money in your family?en-US Estate planning is the key. Why is en-US planning your estate so important?en-US You avoid probate court. In many en-US states, probate fees can reach 5preen-US-en-US cent of the value of the estate. For an en-US estate valued at $400,000, legal fees en-US may reach $20,000.en-US Planning your estate will lessen the en-US tax burden on your heirs. If you die en-US without a will, the laws of your state, en-US not you, govern how your estate is en-US distributed. However, inheritance en-US laws generally favor spouses, domesen-US -en-US tic partners, and blood relatives. But en-US why leave it to the legal system to en-US decide?en-US Many people who are beginning to en-US plan their estates seek professional en-US financial advice following the loss of en-US a loved one or a close friend. While en-US wise, the timing may be off. The best en-US time to start estate planning is immeen-US -en-US diatelyto avoid potential worst-en-US case scenarios, such as mental decline en-US or sudden death of a spouse or loved en-US one.en-US Comprehensive estate planning, en-US ironically, helps protect beneficiaries, en-US both adult and children. With adults, en-US a plan helps guard against bad finanen-US -en-US cial decisions later or potential credit en-US problems. With children, it desigen-US-en-US nates guardians or conservators to en-US protect minors financial interests.en-US A solid estate plan with asset proen-US -en-US tection provisions may help shield en-US your assets from potential creditors.en-US Youre planning to enjoy many en-US more years with your family. What en-US can you do now to ensure your money en-US goes to loved onesas opposed to en-US Uncle Sam?en-US Here are five ways to maximize en-US your family money in the here and en-US now:en-US 1. You can spend your money and en-US your assets, which will ultimately en-US reduce your tax burden and benefit en-US your family. Obviously, your first prien-US -en-US ority is to your loved ones, not to bolen-US -en-US stering government coffers. The en-US problem, however, is that you may en-US live a good, long life, and your goal is en-US to ensure you dont outlive your en-US wealth. This option is worthwhile if en-US you have plenty of cash reserves and a en-US robust estate.en-US 2. Gifts pose the same challenge if en-US your estate and your assets have the en-US potential for a long-shelf life. While en-US giving to family is noble, the IRS en-US establishes restrictions on giving leven-US-en-US els. You may give up to $15,000 each en-US to individuals or charities before haven-US -en-US ing to file gift tax returns. The maxien-US -en-US mum lifetime gift tax exemption is en-US $11.18 million.en-US 3. You may lend to family members. en-US However, to stay IRS compliant, you en-US should draft a loan note that includes en-US the loan amount, payback date, interen-US -en-US est rate, and any collateral or security. en-US This enables you to avoid the IRSs en-US gift classification.en-US 4. You may pay wages to your famien-US-en-US ly; four in five older Americans suffer en-US from at least one chronic disease and en-US may need care. By 2030, more than en-US one in five Americans will be over the en-US age of 65. The IRS allows for the payen-US -en-US ing of wages to family members, en-US which helps build their Social Securien-US -en-US ty earnings record. Services may en-US include providing home health care en-US or performing other household or en-US small business-related work.en-US 5. You can create a life estate deed, en-US which transfers the familys house to en-US a child while the parents retain the en-US right to live in the house. Following en-US the death of the parents, children en-US dont have to go through lengthy proen-US -en-US bate proceedings. The home transfers en-US to children or beneficiariesas a gift. en-USA life estate deed may also remove en-US the home from consideration as a en-US personal asset when applying for en-US Medicaid assistance for long-term en-US care needs.en-US Seek guidance from a financial proen-US -en-US fessional to learn more about your en-US rights and opportunities to provide en-US for your familyeven in future genen-US-en-US erations. en-US Contact us today for more informaen-US-en-US tion!en-US August H. en-US 17 en-USTen-UShe Happiest Place on Earth is en-US getting even happier. Walt Disney en-US World in Orlando is investing a ton en-US of money on new rides, new worlds and en-US even more. It is truly the best place to take a en-US family on vacation, especially if everyone in en-US the family has different interests. With en-US summer upon us, there is no better time to en-US go than the present.en-US Later this month Toy Story Land will en-US open in Hollywood Studios. Star Wars Land en-US is going up quickly, as is the new Guardians en-US of the Galaxy in EPCOT. Disney also en-US recently broke ground on a new Tron ride en-US in the Magic Kingdom. There is a lot going en-US on at the parks and even more elsewhere on en-US the property.en-US For a family, there truly may be no better en-US place to vacation. In addition to hitting the en-US theme parks, there is golf, horseback riding, en-US fishing, water parks, boat rentals, shopping en-US and world-class dining, and just relaxing en-US available at Disney World.en-US We just spent a weekend taking in the en-US renovated and expanding Disney Springs en-US downtown area. There are loads of shops, en-US restaurants, and more there. You can even en-US catch street musicians playing next to the en-US fountains. en-US Our headquarters for the weekend was en-US the Double Tree Suites right next to Disney en-US Springs. In fact, the hotel is one of seven en-US Disney hotels (en-US www.disneyspringshotels.en-US comen-US ) right in the heart of Disney World. In en-US addition to a wonderful two-room suite, en-US breakfast, refreshing pool, and other en-US amenities, guests staying at any of these en-US hotels, get early park entrance, shuttles to en-US and from the parks, and discounts on golf en-US and other things. Somehow, I managed. en-US When most people think about golf at en-US Walt Disney World, they think of the Palm en-US and Magnolia Courses where the PGA Tour en-US once played. Some of us however, are old en-US enough to remember when the Tour also en-US played at Disneys Lake Buena Vista Course en-US (en-US www.golfwdw.comen-US).en-US The PGA Tour last used the Lake Buena en-US Vista Course during the Disney Classic in en-US 1997. The Tour may have left, but for me, en-US the Lake Buena Vista Course is my favorite en-US on the property. Its not long by any means, en-US but you can see some of the very-back tees en-US the Tour added over time to lengthen the en-US course enough to challenge the top profesen-US -en-US sionals.en-US What Lake Buena Vista lacks in length, it en-US makes up for with challenging greens, en-US tree-lined fairways, lots of bunkers and some en-US of the most beautiful trees and fauna on any en-US of the Disney tracks.en-US Designed by Joe Lee, LBV has four sets of en-US tees, playing to a par of 72 for the men and en-US 73 for the ladies. The very back tees play to en-US just a couple yards over 6,800. The forward en-US tees come in at just over 5,200 yards.en-US The course starts you off with a par-5 that en-US should allow you to get your round going en-US early. While its not a long hole, at 514 yards en-US from the back tees, it is fraught with danger. en-US The front nine wanders its way through en-US pastel vacation villas and past a lighthouse. en-US The short par-3 seventh features an island en-US green.en-US Holes eight and nine are the number one en-US and five toughest holes on the course. The en-US par-5 eighth will test you on your second en-US shot as the woods encroach from both sides en-US the closer you get to the green.en-US The back nine features dense woods en-US surrounding the course. At one point you en-US will tee off over a canal as a Disney boat en-US meanders by.en-US Eighteen is a stout par four that measures en-US well over 400 yards. The hole rewards the en-US daring golfer who can play a tee shot from en-US left to right with a shorter approach. This en-US may come in handy as you must hit a en-US narrow green surrounded by bunkers and en-US trees.en-US The best thing about your entire stay is en-US that you get to enjoy your time while en-US surrounded by the magic and enchantment en-US of Disney.en-US James Stammer can be reached at en-US stammergolf@yahoo.com.en-GBGolfen-USFrom page 17 en-USThings to do at Lipscomb Commuen-US -en-US nity Center in Melbourne:en-US Mondays: en-US Adult Morning Club from en-US 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesen-US -en-US day and Fridays. en-US 20 en-USHen-USere it is, my big day and guess what? en-US I am still cooking the dinner en-US whats up with that? But Im not the en-US only father cooking on Fathers Day. en-US A lot of dads like to cook on our special en-US day. Thats probably why not as many en-US families go out to eat on Fathers Day. More en-US than 80 million people dine out on Mothers en-US Day. Almost that many on Valentines Day, en-US too, which seems like a replay for the same en-US person. en-US Now dont get upset, I think thats fine. en-US But what about Dads Day? We are always en-US playing second fiddle to mom. Look at TV en-US sports awards or championship games. en-US Players are always saying, Hi Mom or I en-US love you Mom or this is for you Mom. en-US Guys, we need to step up our game. en-US Maybe we should show our loved ones how en-US much they mean to us by cooking for them en-US that day and making it a memorable en-US experience each year.
