Yes! en-USMen-USaybe its the high-profile en-US celebrities or the added features en-US such as a Harry Potter Escape en-US Room and Nerf war room, but MegaCon en-US has certainly seen an increase in guests en-US milling about dressed as their favorite en-US characters.en-USMegaCon once again returned to the en-US Orange County Convention Center in en-US Orlando for four days during the en-US Memorial Day weekend.en-US Each year, thousands of people flock en-US to the convention center, which serves en-US as a pilgrimage for fans of all kinds of en-US entertainment and there is no shortage en-US of fun things to do to pass the time.en-US In the main hall, rows upon rows of en-US vendors display their unique wares en-US some of which are homemade arts en-US and crafts, or professional goods that en-US are hard to find in stores.en-US Famous Faces & Funnies, a local en-US comic book store in Melbourne, en-US returned to MegaCon Orlando and en-US store owner Rick Shea said he noticed a en-US particular increase in guests attending en-US this years convention.en-US Weve been coming here since en-US MegaCon first started with its original en-US owner, in about 1998 or 1999, Mr. Shea en-US said. Weve grown from attending with en-US one or two booths to eight booths. We en-US do really well here. MegaCon has really en-US stepped up its game. On Thursday, we en-US doubled what we made compared to en-US last years Thursday, and weve kept en-US increasing our sales since.en-US Mr. Shea attributes some of his stores en-US success at MegaCon by having a great en-US staff that makes sure attendees are en-US having fun and by giving the people en-US what they want: Funko Pops.en-US We brought about 2,500 different en-US Pops with us and weve been selling en-US them like theres no tomorrow, Mr. en-US Shea said. We also sell Gundam Wing en-US and graphic novels. Theres something en-US here for everyone.en-US Funko Pops have certainly taken over en-US most fans interests. It was hard to walk en-US anywhere in the vendor hall without en-US seeing a wall of Funkos.en-US For those unfamiliar with the item, en-US Funko Pops are small, toy figures of en-US characters that have made a popular en-US wave within the past few years. Characen-US -en-US ters typically range from popular TV en-US shows, movies, video games and more.en-US My main mission upon attending en-US MegaCon Orlando was to search for a en-US Sherlock Holmes Funko from the en-US BBC series Sherlock. After browsing en-US hundreds of Funkos from two other en-US conventions Id attended in the past and en-US not finding Sherlock, I had little hope en-US Id find it at this one.en-US The average Pop figure sells for $11, en-US but I finally found my Sherlock for $20 en-US and I just had to get it! There was one en-US other Sherlock left at the stall, and en-US probably the only one left for sale at en-US MegaCon.en-US While walking throughout the en-US vendor rows, its hard to miss the en-US amazing cosplay (modern term for en-US costume play) out and about. That was Cecil Garner, a en-US Melbourne resident who travels to en-US various conventions to pose with fans en-US as Rick Grimes.en-US The area served as a photo opportuen-US -en-US nity for guests, and fans could pose en-US with plastic weapons and made-up en-US zombies to capture a moment in time as en-US if they were living in The Walking en-US Dead world.en-US Mr. Garner took on the persona of en-US Cecil Grimes, his take on the characen-US -en-US ter who is one of the main protagonists en-US in The Walking Dead. Case in en-US point is the government of South Africas en-US decision to confiscate properties without en-US compensation. en-US This is theft and its implementation will en-US most likely lead to violence and possible en-US civil war. en-US Why does our government only seem en-US to care about the Middle East? en-US Our administration has been having a en-US field day imposing sanctions on country en-US after country while ignoring the violence en-US and theft in South Africa. Our governen-US-en-US ment recently gave the ANC government en-US of South Africa $313 million in foreign en-US aid. en-US 7 en-USadd resiliency and redundancy to the en-US current water utility system.en-US The new water mains extending to the en-US Barrier Islands will improve upon the preen-US -en-US vious system, providing additional supen-US -en-US port and saving residents money on water en-US utilities.en-US The city of Cocoa and city of Melen-US -en-US bourne are excited about the opportunity en-US to move forward with this project and en-US save our customers millions of dollars, en-US said Assistant to the City Manager and en-US Public Relations Specialist for the City of en-US Cocoa Samantha Senger, and Public en-US Information Officer for the city of Melen-US-en-US bourne Cheryl Mall. Adding redundancy en-US and resiliency in our system means haven-US -en-US ing multiple crossings that can provide en-US water to our customers should one of the en-US pipes fail. If one fails, we would then have en-US two other avenues to deliver water to our en-US barrier island customers.en-US The proposed work on the water mains en-US is expected to extend to the next three to en-US four years.en-US The project is multi-jurisdictional, en-US which means the various organizations en-US that are all involved [must work together] en-US for permitting purposes, Ms. Mall and en-US Ms. Senger said. The location is also en-US along two major highways and thus could en-US pose some traffic challenges.en-US By sharing resources, the project is en-US expected to save taxpayers and residents en-US $3 million dollars.en-US For more information about the en-US joint-purchasing agreement, the council en-US memo may be viewed online at en-US melen-US -en-US bournefl.civicclerk.com/Web/GenFile.en-US aspx?ad=2619en-US. en-US 8 en-USMen-USy work with Brevard seniors en-US started in 1993 when I became en-US Director of the Alzheimers en-US Association East Central Florida Chapter. en-US During these past 25 years, I have observed en-US several swings, both positive and negative, en-US in support of elder programs. To my en-US chagrin we are now in a negative swing, and en-US this is not a good time to be in such a en-US position. The percentage of seniors in en-US Florida, already the highest in the nation, is en-US projected to increase from 20 to 25 percent en-US (5.9 million seniors) by 2030.en-USYet on May 20, Florida Today puben-US -en-US lished an article entitled Its time we fund en-US Childrens Services Council. The article en-US described the need for more financial en-US support for children in Brevard to include en-US caring for them in the 18 hours they are en-US not in school. The common rationale is en-US that these children come from situations en-US that mitigate against them having an en-US equal opportunity to grow up as do other en-US children.en-US However, we have two county based en-US funding programs and United Way, en-US which focuses on education and providen-US -en-US ing a healthy environment for families. en-US Not to mention money collected through en-US our taxes for schools and a new half-cent en-US sales tax that will assist children. When en-US will enough be enough? Do we really en-US need to fund another government entity en-US to ensure the best use of taxpayer en-US dollars and determine the specific needs en-US of (our) children?en-US I was appointed 10 years ago to the en-US Childrens Services Council of Brevard en-US and served until my term ended this past en-US March. I attended Council meetings over en-US the years, but saw nothing accomplished. en-US However, there was always a desire to get en-US funding for it on the ballot. A seldom en-US known fact is that the Childrens Services en-US Council is designated as a taxing district. en-US This means that if funded by a general en-US vote, the Council can distribute whatever en-US funds come to it through an ad valorem en-US tax. The article cited a property tax not to en-US exceed a half mil. For your information en-US that is the maximum amount prescribed en-US by law.en-US While all this sounds perfectly good, I en-US caution you to become fully informed of en-US the ramifications of passage of said en-US referendum if placed on the ballot. en-US Creation of new government infrastrucen-US -en-US ture typically entails generous salaries en-US and overhead costs. The 10 CSCs in en-US Florida manage an average of $48 million en-US annually in taxpayer money, a hefty sum en-US that is overseen by a small group of en-US appointed citizens. In my opinion this en-US adds to an increasing bureaucracy that en-US takes control away from the public. Here I en-US side with Commissioner Tobia in en-US reducing Citizen Advisory Boards, for the en-US Childrens Services Council is that and en-US much more.en-US Remember that we have more seniors en-US over the age of 65 than we do children en-US under the age of 18 in Brevard. Cases of en-US elder abuse in Florida have nearly en-US doubled in the past five years, and we had en-US 65,000 on the Medicaid waiting lists last en-US year, the majority of whom were seniors. en-US Why not Senior Services Council? Would en-US that get the attention that will inevitably en-US be brought to bear on school safety to en-US support this referendum for funding the en-US Childrens Service Council? Be informed.en-US Joe Steckler is the President of Helping en-US Seniors of Brevard, a nonprofit organizaen-US-en-US tion designed to advocate, educate, and en-US fundraise on behalf of Brevards senior en-US citizens. School donates blankets for homeless veterans en-USBREVARD COUNTY With the end en-US of another school year come and gone, en-US teachers and students of St. Teresa Cathoen-US -en-US lic School were proud to end it on a high en-US note with a special presentation during its en-US last assembly.en-US Throughout the year, teachers and stuen-US -en-US dents collaborated on a project aimed to en-US help homeless veterans without a bed to en-US sleep on.en-US A collection of thousands of recycled en-US plastic bags turned into 13 ground covers en-US that homeless veterans and their families en-US can sleep on top of. Each blanket meaen-US -en-US sures at about 6-feet long and 3-feet wide.en-US St. Teresa Catholic School invited en-US George Taylor, founder and CEO of en-US National Veterans Homeless Support in en-US Brevard County, to say a few words during en-US a presentation of the ground covers at the en-US schools last assembly.en-US The impact of homeless veterans is en-US real in our community, Mr. Taylor said. en-US People dont go to school thinking, I en-US think Ill grow up and be homeless. Thats en-US not their dream. I started this [organizaen-US -en-US tion] because in 1989, I was homeless.en-US I walked away from my church, I en-US walked away from my job, and it wasnt en-US because of drugs and alcohol, he en-US explained. I came back from Vietnam en-US and I just didnt want to talk to anybody... en-US I was fortunate enough to be involved in a en-US program in Miami for combat veterans, en-US and they explained what Post-Traumatic en-US Stress was and why I had issues after comen-US -en-US ing back from Vietnam.en-US In 1992, Mr. Taylor rejoined his comen-US -en-US munity and found a new mission. It was en-US finally in 2008 that he started the National en-US Veterans Homeless Support to help veteren-US -en-US ans facing similar issues.en-US Since its inception, the organization has en-US seen an 88 percent reduction in homeless en-US veterans in Brevard in 10 years.en-US Mr. Taylor invited a guest he had en-US brought to speak on his experience about en-US being homeless after losing a job in Orlanen-US -en-US do and having nowhere to live in Cocoa en-US Beach.en-US We went to the VA and the homeless en-US support there put us in contact with en-US George [Taylor] and his wife, Jan, and en-US they put me and my wife in housing, he en-US explained. It was a blessing to see them en-US helping us out. Sometimes its not your en-US fault for being homeless when certain siten-US-en-US uations arise. Thanks to George and Jan en-US were in a house now, were back on track en-US and everything is good.en-US Students then presented Mr. Taylor en-US with bags of the plastic blankets, and he en-US explained just how something such as en-US these ground covers makes a difference in en-US homeless veterans lives.en-US Many homeless people live among the en-US woods, according to Mr. Taylor, and if you en-US pick the wrong spot to sleep on, you may en-US have a wet night. The plastic ground coven-US -en-US ers add a layer of protection from the wet en-US ground, as well as make the ground a little en-US less uncomfortable from the roots of trees en-US that stick out.en-US The project began when ideas floated en-US around for a social justice project the en-US school could get involved with.en-US Once the plastic bags were collected, en-US students from the third to eighth grade en-US participated by cutting, folding and createn-US -en-US ing plarn (plastic yarn) balls for teachers en-US to crochet into ground covers.en-US Each blanket used about 700 plastic en-US bags, according to St. Teresa Principal en-US Jackie Zackel.en-US I think its a beautiful project and we en-US plan to contribute again in the next school en-US year, Mrs. Zackel said.en-US For more information, visit en-US www.nvhs.en-US org.en-US By Brittany Mulliganen-USbmulligan@hometownnewsol.com en-USStaff photo by Brittany Mulliganen-USSt. Teresa Catholic School students present 13 plastic ground coven-US -en-US ers, which was the result of a year-round school project, to the founden-US -en-US er of the National Homeless Veterans Support.

en-US 14 en-USThere are many great adaptations of en-US The Wonderful Wizard of Oz but most en-US do not use farce as the guiding muse, en-US Mr. Bergeron said. We took on the en-US challenge of creating a comedy that en-US would appeal to both adults and chilen-US-en-US dren.en-US This adaptation was inspired by en-US Rocky and Bullwinkles Fractured en-US Fairy Tales, which ran as a television en-US series from 1959-64.en-US Fractured Fairy Tales from the s en-US relied on the audiences familiarity with en-US well-known stories, Mr. Bergeron en-US explained. Marion Music Traveling with golf in mind can be costly en-USWen-USith my writing job, I get to en-US travel quite a bit. I know how en-US expensive golf travel can be. en-US Fortunately, over the years I have learned en-US a few tricks to keep costs down without en-US sacrificing fun. With summer here, I am en-US betting many of us, myself included, will en-US be hitting the highways and airways in en-US search of rest, relaxation, and golf.en-US Probably the best way to save money is en-US to travel with a group. Get as many of en-US your golf buddies to join you on your en-US trip. Larger groups will find that they en-US have leverage when it comes to negotiaten-US -en-US ing lower prices for rooms, food, and en-US golf.en-US If you have hotel or credit card points en-US check to see what benefits they give you. en-US Some credit card companies offer free en-US room upgrades, or discounted greens fees en-US at many resorts. If more than one in your en-US group has a free or discounted night en-US coming at a hotel, you could combine en-US these to get several nights out of your stay en-US for free or greatly reduced.en-US Check with your home club. Many en-US these days are managed by a company en-US that has many courses in its portfolio. See en-US if you get discounted golf at other courses en-US owned or managed by the same company.en-US Ask about unlimited golf packages. en-US Many resorts offer these in off-peak en-US seasons to entice business. There are also en-US packages that include lunch, drinks, and en-US discounted replays.en-US If you really want to avoid the big en-US money greens fees, steer away from the en-US resorts advertised on television or that en-US tout their Home of the Blah Blah en-US Championship layout. While it may be en-US fun to say that you played these courses, en-US you will almost always pay a premium to en-US do so. National advertising is expensive, en-US as is maintaining the course in those en-US fantastic conditions. In the end it all gets en-US passed down to the customer.en-US If you havent played in a while, avoid en-US playing your first round on an expensive, en-US plush course. Take advantage of the en-US municipal courses and use that round to en-US knock off the rust from not picking up a en-US club for so long.en-US While its nice to be prepared and have en-US most everything planned and thought-en-US out, its to your benefit to leave some time en-US open for a last-minute round. Once an en-US empty tee time is gone, it is gone. Many en-US courses offer deep discounts if you call to en-US fill one of those spots at just the right en-US time. There are also several apps that en-US allow you to find tee times at the very last en-US moment and book they on your phone en-US while your buddy drives to the course.en-US Plan your trip for mid-week. Prices on en-US travel, hotels and golf are always higher en-US on the weekends. Besides, it will get you en-US away from the office for a couple extra en-US days.en-US Make sure that everyone is comfortable en-US with everything that is planned. There en-US are times when the guys with the deepest en-US pockets want everyone to eat at a more en-US expensive restaurant, stay at a fancier en-US place, play the more expensive courses. en-US While you dont want to make one person en-US feel unwelcome, you certainly dont want en-US to let one person have all the say.en-US Next to golf, food can be the most en-US expensive part of your trip. Look for en-US accommodations that have a kitchen en-US which allows you to cook meals. Find en-US coupons for discounted meals or even en-US visit restaurants websites and sign up en-US with their emails to get discounts for your en-US first visit.en-US Look for courses that offer walking. en-US You may not want to walk in the summer en-US heat of the south, but walking a course in en-US a more temperate climate is not only en-US good for your wallet, but for your health en-US as well.en-US Consider playing in the afternoon. en-US Rates are cheaper in the afternoon and en-US you can shop around for those last-minen-US -en-US ute deals I talked about earlier. Additionen-US -en-US ally, it allows you to sleep in. Its easy to en-US get worn out on a golf trip. Late nights en-US playing poker with the gang, or just hangen-US -en-US ing out late, coupled with early tee times en-US will quickly run you down.en-US If you have a group that is spread all en-US over the country or across several states, en-US you could consider rotating between en-US staying at one members home one trip en-US and then another the next and so on. en-US Youd all save on accommodations, and en-US could put that savings toward better en-US courses or a feast on your final night. Just en-US remember to show your appreciation to en-US the host and be as accommodating when en-US it becomes your turn.en-US These are just a few things that I have en-US learned over the years. Please, share yours en-US with me and Ill pass along the good en-US word. Happy travels!en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years.
