Six Boy Scouts earn prestigious Eagle Scout rank en-USBREVARD COUNTY Earning the en-US title of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of en-US America (BSA) is a distinction that few en-US Scouts earn.en-US On May 2, six Brevard County Boy en-US Scouts (from Troop 321) were honored en-US with the title of Eagle Scout at an Eagle en-US Scout Rank Achievement Ceremony in en-US Rockledge. The conferring ceremony was en-US held during the City of Rockledge Counen-US -en-US cil Meeting. en-US The new Eagle Scouts were joined by en-US Senator Dorothy L. Hukill (R-Port en-US Orange, District 14), former Deputy en-US Mayor Pat ONeill (who also serves as en-US Assistant Scout Master of Boy Scout en-US Troop 321), and the City of Rockledge en-US Council.en-US Sen. Hukill presented each of the Scouts en-US with a Senator Hukill Medallion of Excelen-US -en-US lence, which includes the Florida state en-US senatorial seal.en-US Through the years [in service], my en-US office has had the opportunity to recogen-US -en-US nize and congratulate individuals who en-US have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, en-US Sen Hukill said. Myself, Mayor Price and en-US Asst. Scout Master ONeill stood at the en-US front of the council chambers while the en-US names of those being recognized for their en-US achievement were called forward. The en-US audience was filled with boy scouts from en-US Troop 321, family, friends and city en-US employees.en-US There was also an additional recognien-US -en-US tion for Asst. Scout Master ONeills conen-US -en-US tribution to the Boy Scouts, who has suren-US -en-US passed his own goals in working with the en-US BSA.en-US [Asst. Scout Master ONeill] had a goal en-US of mentoring 25 Eagle Scouts and has en-US mentored a total of 26 Eagle Scouts en-US throughout his involvement, Sen. Hukill en-US explained. When the 25th Eagle Scout en-US was called up to receive his congratulaen-US -en-US tions, he presented a special mentorship en-US pin to Asst. Scout Master ONeill.en-US The Boy Scouts who were named as en-US Eagle Scouts were as follows:en-US Alexander Coppolaen-US Christopher Comolettien-US Noah Herwicken-US Terence Martinen-US Jeffrey Owensen-US Matthew Schmidten-US During the conclusion of the ceremony, en-US Sen. Hukill congratulated the Eagle en-US Scouts, their families and their friends on en-US their significant achievements in helping en-US to support the Scouts.en-US A significant change coming to the BSA en-US is the inclusion of girls into the BSA proen-US-en-US gram, which will be official in 2019.en-US The addition of girls into the BSA will en-US also include a name-change for the proen-US -en-US gram, from Boy Scouts of America to en-US Scouts BSA.en-US Before the change, there were already en-US programs in place that allowed girls to en-US participate in the BSA, such as the Venen-US -en-US turing program, but girls could not apply en-US for the rank of Eagle Scout.en-US I think that if theyre going to allow en-US girls into the Boy Scouts, they might as en-US well change their name to [simply] en-US Scouts, said one Brevard resident. Its a en-US sign of the times changing rapidly. Its en-US certainly a step forward for those that en-US [would like] to see the change.en-US For more information about the Boy en-US Scouts of America and their new Scout en-US Me In inclusion program, visit en-US www.en-US By Austin en-USPhoto courtesy of Lindsey Swindleen-USPhoto from the ceremony with Mayor Thomas J. Clean power is critical en-USfor your computeren-USLen-USets talk about power. Not the kind of en-US power that we usually think of when en-US we think of computers and power. I en-US dont mean processor power measured in en-US gigahertz or anything like that. Lets talk en-US about the power that your computer needs en-US to run. Good, old-fashioned AC power all en-US computers need it to function, but not en-US many people understand just how critical en-US clean power is for the proper operation of en-US a machine. en-USThe power we get raw out of the wall en-US can fluctuate, sometimes wildly, due to en-US any number of environmental issues en-US from thousands of users suddenly en-US kicking on their air conditioning all at en-US the same time to solar flares causing en-US glitches in the power grid. In order to en-US clean up power, its recommended to en-US plug a surge suppressor into your wall en-US outlet and then plug your computer en-US equipment into that. But what does that en-US do? How does that help ensure that your en-US machine is getting that squeaky clean en-US power that it needs? en-US Well, surge suppressors are devices that en-US are designed to clean up the normal en-US fluctuations in power that is common on en-US all power grids by keeping the voltage at a en-US constant cycle. The surge suppressor will en-US clip off any spikes in the voltage that en-US could cause damage to sensitive hardware en-US in your computer, but there are some en-US things that your average surge suppressor en-US cant do anything about. en-US For instance, if the voltage drops due to en-US a brown out, your surge suppressor cant en-US really do anything about that (its an en-US under-voltage situation, not an en-US over-voltage or surge) and if you take en-US a direct hit from a lightning strike, forget en-US about it; all bets are off. A lightning strike en-US has so much power behind it (think en-US hotter than the sun) that it usually en-US flows right through your average surge en-US suppressor, toasting everything in its en-US path, including the surge suppressor en-US itself! Many people are really surprised to en-US learn after suffering from a lightning en-US strike that their surge suppressor did en-US nothing to protect their equipment. The en-US mistake here is that people think of en-US lightning as just another surge in power, en-US and the surge suppressor is there to en-US handle surges. Unfortunately thats not en-US entirely the case. For a direct lightning en-US strike, there is not much available to en-US protect equipment save unplugging all en-US your equipment during a storm. And en-US with the frequency of storms that we get en-US around here, thats not always practical. en-US OK, so that covers lightning, but what en-US about a brown out? A brown out is a en-US phenomenon that is just the opposite of en-US the surge. When everyone suddenly kicks en-US on their AC and all the lights go dim for a en-US few seconds or even minutes, that lower en-US voltage can often cause machines to act en-US squirrelly. But since its a low voltage en-US situation instead of a surge in voltage, en-US most of your basic surge suppressors are en-US unable to supply the extra power to keep en-US it at the proper levels for your computer. en-US And then there are the outright power en-US outages that can last for seconds, minutes en-US and even hours. For these kinds of power en-US conditions, the best thing you can add to en-US your system is an Uninterruptible Power en-US Supply (also known as a UPS or en-US Battery Backup.) en-US Most battery backup systems come en-US equipped with surge suppressor circuitry en-US so you get the best of both worlds; you en-US get the benefit of clipping over voltage en-US spikes from your system, and you get a en-US constant flow of balanced electricity en-US regardless of whether the power coming en-US from the wall drops due to a brown out en-US or cuts out altogether.en-US The thing to keep in mind about UPS en-US systems is that they are not designed to en-US allow you to keep working through a en-US power outage; they are there to allow you en-US just enough time to save your work and en-US do a controlled and proper shutdown of en-US your system rather than having the en-US system just drop out on you. en-US In a nutshell, the least desirable way to en-US set up your computer equipment is to just en-US plug everything right into the wall. The en-US next best thing is to plug your equipment en-US into a surge suppressor of some type; that en-US way you at least have a way to clean any en-US normal spikes from your power. en-US The best solution is to get a UPS and en-US plug your monitor and tower alone into en-US it. That protects you from spikes and en-US brownouts and full-blown power outages.en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. He can en-US be reached at 888-752-9049 or en-US help@en-US en-US (no hyphens). With the escalating conflict en-US in Vietnam, he registered for the draft but en-US began considering full-time service after en-US several months living in Washington state. en-US I knew nothing about the military at en-US that time, Coverley said, explaining that en-US his brother-in-law, who was serving in the en-US Air Force, inadvertently helped guide his en-US decision with a discussion on enlistment en-US commitments. The Air Force was four en-US years of service, the Navy was four, and en-US the Army was three. I chose three. en-US Shortly after attending basic training at en-US Fort Ord, California, and advanced trainen-US-en-US ing at Fort Eustis, Virginia, Coverley en-US served the first of two tours in Vietnam as en-US an aircraft electrician.en-US While there, he applied and was selecten-US-en-US ed for rotary-wing flight training, then en-US split between Fort Rucker and Fort Wolten-US -en-US ers, Texas. He deployed for his second en-US tour in Vietnam as a UH-1C pilot quickly en-US following flight school graduation and en-US eventually earned 32 Air Medals there. en-US It was during his next assignment in en-US Germany, however, that Coverley experien-US -en-US enced the situation that would lead to his en-US Broken Wing Award. During a 30-minute en-US flight back from a maintenance test at a en-US neighboring installation, the engine on his en-US MEDEVAC UH-1 blew and suddenly lost en-US power. en-US Coverley, the only pilot on the flight, en-US immediately autorotated the aircraft and en-US landed in a nearby field. Neither he, his en-US maintenance sergeant nor his crew chief en-US were injured, and the aircraft suffered no en-US damage other than the blown engine. en-US Training, Coverley said, was the key to en-US successfully handling the emergency. en-US The training really paid off for me, he en-US said. As soon as it happened, I knew en-US exactly what to do. I was thinking, Youve en-US got to sit this thing down, hopefully in one en-US piece. en-US Incredibly, this particular situation was en-US Coverleys fourth autorotation. Golf Channel has tried en-US many shows to capture the interest en-US of fans beyond just watching tournament en-US golf and lessons. Not all have been quite to en-US successful. The latest endeavor is Shoten-US -en-US makers, sponsored by Top Golf. en-US The show was filmed over a very cold en-US weekend at Top Golf in Las Vegas. The en-US nearest Top Golf to us in in Orlando, on en-US Universal Boulevard. The idea behind Top en-US Golf is to provide an entertainment en-US atmosphere where golfers hit from climate en-US controlled bays at targets on the range. en-US Points are given for targets hit and the en-US winner is the one with the highest score. en-US Think bowling, but for golf.en-US Back to the show. Shotmakers is a new en-US competition where precision shot-making en-US meets strategy in a blend of golf, technology en-US and entertainment. Teams consisted of two en-US golfers, one male, one female. en-US Most of the players for the series were en-US scratch golfers and players looking to get en-US onto a tour to compete professionally. Many en-US have played on mini-tours or in other Golf en-US Channel competitions. en-US I was intrigued and watched mainly en-US because Maurice Allen, one of the competien-US -en-US tors, is someone that I have met at a few en-US golf events. He is a 3-time World Long en-US Drive Champion and holds the record for en-US longest drive with a 3-wood.en-US The show has potential, but most fans en-US did not care for the show. Like too many en-US golf reality shows, the players just arent en-US that good. They can play better than you en-US and I, but watching them fold under a little en-US pressure or spend more time talking about en-US how good they are than backing it up, en-US wears thin very quickly.en-US I cannot tell you how many times I en-US watched the guys try to hit an 8-iron 175 en-US yards, only to come up short. If you are en-US truly this stubborn and your ego this large, en-US I can see why you are competing on a en-US television show, not a tour.en-US The highest points could be scored by en-US hitting a long drive into the net at the end en-US of the range and many players chose that en-US shot. Sadly, too often they missed the en-US 50-yard wide target that was only a little en-US over 200 yards away. en-US If the show should return for a second en-US season, Id love to see some changes to liven en-US things up. In most of the competitions, the en-US players got to pick what target they would en-US hit to and, in every instance, choose which en-US club to use. I want to change that.en-US You want the show to be about Shoten-US -en-US makers, then lets make it that. I want to see en-US a spinning wheel with the targets laid out en-US on them and another with 13-clubs. Let the en-US player spin the wheel to see what target he en-US or she must hit to. Then spin the other to en-US see what club must be used.en-US To mix it up, allow the players to pick one en-US or the other. They can choose a club, but en-US must then spin to get the target or vise-veren-US -en-US sa. I want to see you making a shot. Lets see en-US you hit a target 100 yards away with a en-US 3-iron, or hooding a 9-iron to make it go en-US 200 yards.en-US Another twist would be when the teams en-US are playing head-to-head, to allow one team en-US to force the other to either re-spin or even en-US select their target for them. Lets say Team 1 en-US spun and gets to hit a wedge to the closest en-US target. Their competitors use their chance en-US to force them to either hit a different club at en-US that target or pick a different one.en-US I want to see shot making! I was always en-US intrigued to watch Seve Ballesteros hit en-US amazing shots with clubs no one else would en-US have thought of. Those are the shots I want en-US to see and that I think may keep viewers en-US interested.en-US The show is likely coming back for a en-US second season as there is a place on the en-US Golf Channel website to apply to be a future en-US contestant. en-US Heres hoping they switch a few things en-US up, or I will probably find another show to en-US watch those evenings. en-USCorrectionen-USA couple weeks ago, I misquoted Mark en-US Boyd, General Manager of St Lucie Trail. en-US His quote in my story on the new owners of en-US the course should have stated: If the en-US clubhouse was paid a little more attention en-US (by the previous owner), everyone would en-US have been thrilled.en-US I mistakenly used the word course en-US instead of clubhouse. Boyds plans are to en-US take better advantage of the clubhouse than en-US the previous owners did.
