Nevertheless we must still considen-US -en-US er our overall capability to assist those who en-US will at some point need our help to live en-US with dignity.en-USBrevard County has a huge number of en-US senior citizens, including many who en-US need help finding affordable housing and en-US transportation, medical and dental care, en-US nutritious food, assisted living and nursen-US -en-US ing home care that does not increase en-US already excessive levels of stress, and en-US other services necessary to live and not en-US be a burden on our community. en-US If you are not aware, the needs I have en-US just spelled out are things that most of us en-US take for granted.en-US We have programs, many of which are en-US provided by nonprofit organizations, en-US that do their very best to meet these en-US needs. But finding information on such en-US programs can be a challenge, particularly en-US since local radio stations and newspapers en-US are on the decline, Spectrum TV will not en-US provide air time for local charities (as en-US Brighthouse used to do), and FLORIDA en-US TODAY caters to younger people who en-US rely more on their iPhones to acquire en-US news. This makes en-US Hometown Newsen-US and en-US other senior friendly publications even en-US more important.en-US With time we can reduce dependence en-US on almost anything, but in some cases we en-US do not have that time. While seniors are en-US inclined to read a newspaper, if we elimien-US -en-US nate news important to seniors, why en-US would they want to buy a paper? en-US Somehow we have managed to get our en-US priorities turned upside down, stunting en-US our ability to accurately portray senior en-US needs and develop a capability to meet en-US those needs. It does not bode well for en-US seniors when they are kept in the dark en-US about decisions that directly affect them.en-US For instance, why doesnt a communien-US-en-US ty of 550,000, half of them seniors, know en-US that five county commissioners have en-US voted to eliminate funding for local nonen-US -en-US profits that provide senior daycare, transen-US en-USBecome an advocateen-USHELPING SENIORS en-US OF BREVARDen-GBJOE STECKLER Rules of the road should not en-USaffect courteousnessen-USWith response to "Friendly Reminder," en-US true, effective, to the point, polite, and en-US may save some lives from the effects of en-US road rage.en-US Here's my "Friendly Reminder". .en-US "Move over, road hog!"en-US Thank you, Mr. Magoo.en-USLack of solar panel rebate may en-US prove more important to someen-US en-USTo the engineer from Chicago who is en-US upset that the state of Florida does not en-US offer rebates for adding solar panels.en-US I'll make this short and sweet: Move en-US back to Chicago.en-USDesign hot dog roll baking pan en-US en-US so hot dogs can fit in bunen-USThe hot dog roll that is out to lunch.en-US Why is it that we have been able to en-US launch men into space, walk on the moon, en-US launch a car into outer space, and found en-US cures for a great number of once incuren-US -en-US able diseases, invented the telegraph, teleen-US-en-US phone, television, cell phones and comen-US -en-US puters . but why-oh-why havent we en-US figured out how to make a hot dog bun en-US that actually fits a hot dog? en-US Now this is important. Almost everyen-US-en-US one likes a hot dog and have had their en-US mishaps with a wayward dog. en-US Lets figure this thing out.en-US I would like to challenge our young stuen-US-en-US dents to design a hot dog roll baking pan en-US that produces a hot dog roll that actually en-US works well with a hot dog. en-US I am sure that if we can launch rockets en-US into space, we can produce just such pan. en-US Maybe our local NASA engineers could en-US evaluate the students solutions to this en-US problem and help them produce just such en-US a baking pan.en-US'Coexist' and 'Pray For Peace' en-US stickers share same messageen-USA bumper sticker's intention is to show en-US support for a place, candidate, or concept, en-US etc.en-US It doesn't promise a favorable result. It en-US merely shows support.en-US A "Coexist" sticker shows support for en-US that concept. Would you consider it an en-US embarrassment to post a "Pray For Peace" en-US sticker and ask that it be covered, because en-US it is unlikely to happen? en-US "Coexist" and "Pray For Peace" are both en-US of the same concept! They both support en-US peace! en-USTrained dogs might be answer en-US to school shootingsen-USThese articles about school shootings en-US and police who are hiding from the shooten-US-en-US ings are annoying. en-US I am surprised that someone has not en-US raised the possibilities of trained canines. en-US Dogs are loyal and trustworthy and en-US fearless when teamed up with a leader. en-US The Army has used trained dogs. The en-US police use trained dogs. Wealthy people en-US have trained dogs to protect property and en-US life and limb. en-US Trained dogs are not known to run en-US away from trouble. How do we en-UShope to ever fund a county aging plan that en-US will assist a rapidly growing number of en-US seniors if we continue to defund necessary en-US and affordable programs?en-US Right now there are 65,000 seniors on en-US waiting lists for Medicaid managed care in en-US Florida, and these numbers will only en-US increase unless we take positive action.en-US Eliminating county-based funding for en-US nonprofits is a poor way to develop cost-efen-US -en-US fective services for seniors. The same can en-US be said about United Way closing its doors en-US to new nonprofit organizations that proen-US -en-US vide information about senior services and en-US needs.en-US At the same time, we are increasing tax en-US revenues for childrens education and en-US endorsing a campaign to add new Chilen-US-en-US dren Services dollars to an already over en-US taxed general revenue fund. This does not en-US make sense to this writer. You strive for opportunities like en-US this, but dont expect them to happen.en-US Chief Hoog certainly has the experien-US -en-US ence: more than 30 years and all of it en-US right here in Brevard County. en-US She moved to Merritt Island in 1965 en-US from Alexandria, Va., when her father en-US was recruited by NASA. en-US She signed on as a volunteer fireen-US -en-US fighter with the Merritt Island Volunen-US -en-US teer Fire Department in 1984, attended en-US fire school in 1985, and began work en-US with the Cocoa Beach Fire Departen-US -en-US ment.en-US In 1987, she was hired by Brevard en-US County Fire Rescue and spent the next en-US 25 years working her way up through en-US the ranks from firefighter/EMT to en-US assistant chief of strategic programs.en-US I retired in 2014, and thought I was en-US finished, Chief Hoog said, but I en-US believe I retired too young and missed en-US the service too much.en-US She came out of retirement to serve en-US the city of Palm Bay as battalion chief en-US and was introduced as Palm Bays new en-US fire chief April 30.en-US The vacancy was left by former chief en-US Russell Nail, who resigned in April to en-US become fire chief for Escambia County.en-US I am very en-US appreciative to be en-US selected and en-US entrusted to lead en-US this department, en-US Chief Hoog said. en-US As for being in a en-US position traditionen-US-en-US ally occupied by en-US men, she cauen-US -en-US tioned people not en-US to look at careers en-US or occupations en-US based on gender. If en-US you feel a passion for a particular field en-US you should absolutely pursue your en-US dream. Otherwise you may always en-US wonder what could have been.en-US And Chief Hoog would know. She en-US didnt originally plan to go into the fire en-US service.en-US I was supposed to attend law en-US school, she said. However, I was en-US exposed to the career through friends en-US who were firefighters and the rest is en-US history, as they say. I am so glad I didnt en-US choose otherwise.en-US By Amy Lyonen-USFor Hometown News en-USPat Pascazi and en-US daughter Dena of en-US Melbourne display en-US a copy of en-US Hometown Newsen-US en-US while sightseeing en-US downtown near en-US the Mormon en-US Temple in Salt en-US Lake City, Utah. Everyone else is not too crazy en-US about this plan.en-US When the first Iron Man movie en-US was released in 2008, kicking off Phase en-US One of Marvel Studios movie plans, en-US Marvel hooked in fans with a en-US light-hearted spirit, giving us a chance en-US to root for the underdogs and sprinen-US -en-US kling each movie with light humor.en-US But, coming into its Phase Two, the en-US themes for the movies got darker. The en-US Avengers broke apart as the worlds en-US governments realized they did more en-US damage than saving, such as in Avengen-US-en-US ers: Age of Ultron when Tony Stark en-US accidentally created Ultron, an en-US artificially intelligent being that en-US destroyed a whole city by floating it up en-US into the air and having it come crashen-US -en-US ing back down.en-US With Infinity War, the comedic en-US one-liners keeps the movie from being en-US too serious, especially after diving into en-US the first five minutes.en-US Moviegoers clapped as their favorite en-US superhero arrived on the screen and en-US there was a feeling of camaraderie as en-US the band got back together to try and en-US stop Thanos.en-US The only downside about watching en-US this movie is that we have to wait a en-US year for its untitled part two.en-US Also, for those planning to see it, as en-US with any Marvel movie, you might en-US want to stick around for an after-creden-US -en-US its scene. You will have time to run to en-US the bathroom as the credits start en-US rolling and come back, as the credits en-US are super-long, but dont take your en-US time about it, either.en-USGIVE MOVIES A en-US CHANCEen-GBBRITTANY MULLIGAN en-USImage courtesy of Amazon.com
