They use an average en-US of 35 percent less energy than typical en-US buildings and are responsible for 35 peren-US -en-US cent fewer greenhouse gas emissions.en-US The schools earned the Energy Star ceren-US -en-US tification by not only adhering to the en-US EPAs strict policy guidelines on energy en-US efficiency, but also by devising new ways en-US to save net energy losses.en-US For instance, in some schools the chiller en-US systems used to regulate inside temperaen-US-en-US tures are being re-engineered for more en-US energy-efficient practices.en-US The Association of Energy Engineers en-US (AEE) and American Society of Heating, en-US Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engien-US-en-US neers (ASHRAE) conducted a tour of en-US some of the schools that earned the Eneren-US -en-US gy Star certification.en-US (The AEE and ASHRAE visited) new en-US chillers and the central energy plant en-US designed for Southwest Middle and Turnen-US -en-US er Elementary schools, BPS officials staten-US -en-US ed. The district was able to save time and en-US money by combining the schools chillers, en-US installing plastic pipe for the chilled water en-US loop and using directional digging to en-US avoid trenching. en-US The groups also visited Bayside High en-US where they learned about the schools new en-US chillers, measures to reduce outside air, en-US refurbished ice storage and building-enen-US -en-US velope improvements, officials added.en-US Brevard Public Schools aims to achieve en-US even greater energy efficiency in the comen-US-en-US ing years by working to replace the curen-US -en-US rent T8 florescent lighting with more en-US modern and efficient LED lighting.en-US The effort, which began in March, will en-US be in two phases and will take about five en-US years to finish, officials stated. The first en-US phase will replace more than 250,000 en-US 4-foot T8 florescent lamps, officials staten-US-en-US ed. Phase 2 will focus on high bay fixen-US -en-US tures in gyms and cafeterias, and outside en-US lighting, and should start this summer.en-US This lighting overhaul also will save en-US BPS around $500,000 a year.en-US The T8 lamps will not end up in the en-US landfill, however. They will be offered for en-US free to schools that have not yet been en-US scheduled for LED replacements, and the en-US remaining lamps will be auctioned off.en-US For more information, visit en-US www.edline.en-US net/pages/Brevard_County_Schools/en-US Departments/Departments__A-J/Energy_en-US Resource_Conservationen-US.en-US By Austin Rushnellen-USarushnell@hometownnewsol.com en-USFor more information, call Mareitta en-US Janutolo at (321) 727-2383, or Nora Stoip en-US (321) 704-7474 or Lorraine Calagy at en-US (321) 725-3459.en-US Rock the Porch:en-US Rock the Porch Jam is en-US from 1 to 2:50 p.m. the second (May 12)en-US and fourth (April 28) Saturdays at en-US Melbourne Beach Old Town Hall History en-US Center, 2373 Oak St., Melbourne Beach. en-US The free, inclusive event features blues, en-US rock, folk, and country jam for spectators en-US and musicians. en-US For more information, call (321) 427-en-US 4624, email en-USinfo@beeandthehive.comen-US or en-US visiten-US en-US www.beeandthehive.comen-US .en-US Communicate with confidence:en-US The en-US Peace Talkers Toastmasters Club meets en-US from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturdays at Wat en-US Punyawanaram Buddhist Temple, 4490 en-US Aurora Road, Melbourne.en-US The group can help you improve your en-US communication and leadership skills at a en-US peaceful setting.en-US For more information, email Pim Paren-US -en-US part at en-US piml@juno.comen-US.en-US SUNDAY, APRIL 29 en-USLearn to paint pastels:en-US Learn how to en-US draw and paint wildlife, animals and pets, en-US naturescapes, still life and portraits, and en-US abstracts from 10 a.m. to noon Sundays en-US and from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays at Art en-US Gallery of Viera, 2201 Town Center Drive, en-US Suite 111, Viera.en-US The fee is $25 per class or $85 for four en-US classes and you can join anytime.en-US Contact Debi Pettigrew to register: en-US (321) 749-1153 or en-US dpettigrew@cfl.rr.comen-US en-US View Debis work at en-USwww.pastelsbydeb.en-US comen-US .en-US en-USBeginning Hebrew class:en-US Learn to speak en-US Hebrew at 12:15 p.m. Sundays at Temple en-US Israel, 7350 Lake Andrew Drive, Viera.en-US The class is taught by Peter Czutrin, en-US from Israel.en-US You do not need to be Jewish to learn en-US Hebrew and can begin the course anytime.en-US It is open to all teens and older and the en-US fee is $144 for members, $160 for non-en-US members.en-US For more information or to register, call en-US (321) 631-9494 or email en-US tioffice@en-US tiofbrevard.comen-US.en-USMONDAY, APRIL 30en-GBCalendaren-USFrom page 2en-GB Seeen-GB en-GB CALENDARen-GB, page 4

But it is because forward en-US thinking management like the leadership en-US of en-US Hometown Newsen-US is willing to publish en-US these articles that we have the opportunity en-US to change the mindset of philanthropic en-US givers. en-US Most people believe private foundations en-US provide the majority of funding for charien-US -en-US table causes, but that is far from the truth. en-US Only 7 percent of financial aid is derived en-US from foundation support. Most funding en-US comes from local businesses, individuals, en-US or innovative fund raising activities. en-US Having a cause understood by all, such en-US as Alzheimers, cancer, diabetes, or heart en-US research, makes fundraising a lot easier. en-US Having a cause not so well known or one en-US that people want to ignore, like aging, en-US makes it more difficult.en-US In this short article it is my privilege to en-US talk about a car dealer who does his best en-US to promote charitable giving in Brevard. I en-US know firsthand what he has done for the en-US community ever since that day 25 years en-US ago when I walked into the Boniface Heirs en-US office and asked A.J. Hiers if he would en-US donate a car to the Alzheimers Associaen-US -en-US tion for us to raffle. He must have thought en-US I was some kind of a nut, but he did furen-US -en-US nish a car, transport it to events at his cost, en-US and advertise in a local daily newspaper en-US for us. He also provided three Dodge vans en-US for us to take clients to and from our adult en-US day cares, covering repairs and insurance. en-US All we did was put in the gas.en-US Over the years we have softened him up en-US a bit to where he has and continues to help en-US a number of charities, the ones I know en-US about being St. Jude, the Brevard County en-US Sheriffs Office Charity, the Brevard Alzen-US-en-US heimers Foundation, and now Helping en-US Seniors. This past year A.J. gave us a 1951 en-US Ford Victoria hot rod to raffle, and we en-US raised more than $56,000, which will help en-US us provide a lifeline to many seniors.en-GBSeeen-GB en-GB SENIORSen-GB page 7en-USHELPING SENIORS en-US OF BREVARDen-GBJOE STECKLER Alex Schierholtz/Staff photographer en-USHundreds of people gather at Playalinda Beach to watch the launch of en-US a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on April 18. Every other restauen-US -en-US rant weve had, weve made the best of en-US what it was before.en-US El Leoncito first opened as a Mexien-US -en-US can restaurant in California in 1977. en-US The Sanchez family moved to Brevard en-US and opened its first restaurant in Titusen-US -en-US ville in 1995, adding Cuban dishes to en-US the menu. He even went to en-US Cuba to pick out the paintings that en-US now fill the walls.en-US There are two noticeable pieces of en-US decorations inside the restaurant. en-US When you first walk inside, a large en-US church door fills the back wall on your en-US right, and if you walk to the back by en-US the outdoor seating area, a church winen-US-en-US dow is displayed on the wall. These two en-US pieces came from a 200-year-old en-US church in India, Mr. Sanchez explained.en-US The tables are intricately carved and en-US there are plenty of colorful artifacts en-US hanging from the ceiling and walls to en-US catch your attention.en-US As with any new business opening up en-US to the public, Mr. Sanchez said he ran en-US across a few challenges.
