Brevard schools earn environmental outreach honor en-USMELBOURNE Part of living in a desen-US -en-US tination area is taking care of what makes en-US Brevard beautiful.en-US Earlier this month, Melbournes Environen-US-en-US mental Community Outreach Division en-US announced that six Brevard schools have en-US recently earned the Environmental Comen-US -en-US munity Outreach (ECO) Schools honor for en-US their achievements this school year.en-US These schools have taken numerous en-US steps to conserve and protect resources en-US inside their schools and on school grounds, en-US officials stated. The ECO Schools designaen-US -en-US tion recognizes the efforts undertaken to en-US promote Environmental Care and Owneren-US -en-US ship.en-US Activities include strong water and eneren-US -en-US gy conservation measures, litter patrols, en-US active recycling programs and hands-on en-US environmental stewardship activities with en-US students, officials said.en-US The six schools that were selected for this en-US school year are as follows:en-US Holy Trinity Episcopal Lower School; Sea en-US Park Elementary School; University Park en-US Elementary School; West Melbourne School en-US for Science; Stone Magnet Middle School; en-US and Melbourne High School.en-US We sent out forms to the schools that en-US had all of these environmental activities that en-US the schools could do, inside and outside of en-US the campus, said Jennifer Wilster, environen-US -en-US mental community outreach manager. We en-US had these six schools complete their entries, en-US and most schools had well over the required en-US number of hours and activities, which en-US shows how environmentally productive en-US they are.en-US Each of the schools not only followed the en-US application instructions for the ECO desigen-US -en-US nation, but also demonstrated their envien-US -en-US ronmental awareness and support in unique en-US ways. For instance, at West Melbourne en-US School for Science, third-graders used fallen en-US coconuts from Hurricane Irma to make en-US Coco Critters.en-US I really couldnt single any one [school] en-US out, all of them did some cool things, Mrs. en-US Wilster said. I think its really great that en-US these schools are taking a proactive en-US approach in getting their schools to be envien-US -en-US ronmentally conscious. This is our third en-US year, and hopefully next year well get even en-US more schools to participate.en-US Along with the ECO Schools designation en-US program, the city of Melbourne is also geten-US -en-US ting personally involved with environmenen-US -en-US tal care by once again hosting its Annual en-US Trash Bash Clean-up.en-US Melbourne is currently recruiting for the en-US Trash Bash, which will be from 8 a.m. to en-US noon Saturday, April 7.en-US 2018 marks the 37th year that Melbourne en-US has hosted the Trash Bash, which involved en-US environmental clean-ups in various areas en-US throughout the city.en-US The Trash Bash initially was a program en-US that was started by Keep America Beautiful, en-US and was promoted by Keep Brevard Beautien-US -en-US ful to various cities throughout Brevard en-US County.en-US The Trash Bash will be hosted in 10 locaen-US -en-US tions in Melbourne.en-US We provide volunteers with grabbers, en-US gloves, safety vests, trash bags, water, and en-US snack for the volunteers, said Mrs. Wilster. en-US For the volunteers who have already regisen-US -en-US tered, they also get free T-shirts. Volunteers en-US should also bring sunscreen and be preen-US -en-US pared for whatever the weather is that day.en-US A limited number of additional T-shirts en-US will also be available at each station.en-US Check-in sites will be at Ascension Cathen-US -en-US olic School; Carver Park; Eastern Florida en-US State College/Melbourne Campus; Harry en-US Goodes Outdoor Shop; Joe Davis Commuen-US -en-US nity Center; Lipscomb Community Center; en-US Palm Bay High School; Paradise Beach; and en-US Rockwell Collins.en-US To register, e-mail Jennifer Wilster at en-US jenen-US-en-US nifer.wilster@mlbfl.orgen-US or call (321) 608-en-US 5080.en-US By Austin Rushnellen-USarushnell@hometownnewsol.com en-USPhoto courtesy of the city of Melbourneen-USSea Park Elementary students display veggies from their gardens.

As one en-US may suspect, such task will take effort, en-US advocacy, forethought, and funding to en-US make it happen. Most important is propen-US -en-US er planning to accomplish what we want en-US to do to help meet the needs of seniors.en-US In our media-conscious world, one of en-US the most common planning tools is a en-US survey, so lets talk about that today. In en-US 1996, United Way conducted a two-day en-US workshop to survey needs in Brevard en-US County. They determined 17 action en-US items that needed to be addressed, en-US including the need for senior informaen-US-en-US tion. en-US When Helping Seniors conducted its en-US own survey 18 years later, the 400 en-US respondents cited as most important the en-US needs for senior information and finanen-US-en-US cial resources. About that time we had a en-US non-elected Silver Haired Legislature en-US which promoted the needs of seniors, en-US but that organization no longer exists. So en-US how do we develop a process to make en-US information needed by seniors available en-US to them?en-US In 2011, Helping Seniors was founded en-US to inform, educate, and connect seniors en-US and those who care for them to the seren-US -en-US vices they need to age with dignity and en-US act as an advocate for seniors. According en-US to my research, there is no other organien-US -en-US zation that has the radio, television, and en-US combined media outreach program to en-US assemble and disseminate information to en-US seniors.en-US There are many wonderful service en-USHelp assemble directory en-US of service providersen-USHELPING SENIORS en-US OF BREVARDen-GBJOE STECKLER See en-GB en-GB SENIORSen-GB page 7en-USReader offers tipsen-US for driving on Florida roadsen-USDriving tips:en-US 1) Slower traffic, put the phone down and en-US KEEP RIGHT!en-US 2) Put the phone down and PAY ATTENen-US -en-US TION to your surroundings.en-US 3) When the light turns green, put the en-US phone down and GO!!!en-US 4) If you have reached the age where you en-US feel fear when driving, just STOP!en-US 5) If you are lost, put the phone down and en-US PULL OFF THE ROAD IMMEDIATELY en-US and ASK DIRECTIONS!!en-US 6) For tourists, put the phone down and en-US drive as the locals do. en-US 7) PUT THE PHONE DOWN!!!en-USIt is so sad to see what has hapen-US -en-US pened to Rotary Park en-USThere used to be cars in the parking lot at en-US Rotary Park. en-US There used to be children laughing and en-US playing on the playground equipment. en-US There used to be families having picnics, en-US McDonald's employees taking their break. en-US Now there is an empty parking lot, no en-US children and no picnics for the park is full of en-US homeless taking up most all of the tables. en-US Now there are falling down drunks urien-US -en-US nating along the fence line at the bottom of en-US the park.en-US Now there is a fence full of sleeping mateen-US -en-US rials.en-US Now there is cursing, verbal disagreeen-US-en-US ments and trash all over the park. en-US The city empties the trash cans but en-US neglects to pick up all the liter on the en-US ground. Only after the hurricane, the en-US streets and lots were cleaned. en-US However, it did not take long for the trash en-US to build. en-US Businesses seem to just let their yard peren-US -en-US sonnel to clean up, and they do, but by en-US mowing over the trash. This causes the trash en-US to become a thousand tiny pieces.en-US On Lipscomb toward the high school, en-US there is so much trash. Teens don't care if en-US adults do not. It is a shame that businesses en-US don't take the time to clean up their lots. en-US I've seen stores littered with the remains en-US of cigarette butts where the employees en-US smoke and just throw them down. en-US One business complex is completely en-US trashed, including discarded furniture. en-US Where is code enforcement? Why is it so en-US hard to pick up trash? Many smokers just en-US toss their cigarettes out the window. en-US I don't think Brevard has enough police en-US or code enforcement to curtail this. The en-US leaders of this county should encourage en-US businesses to clean up. Yes, en-US it is wonderful that there is a building en-US boom, however, (this is the part where it is en-US obvious that our local leaders are blind to) en-US this massive boom has not been thought en-US out well. en-US Yes, people are working, people moving en-US here, home values are increasing . yes, en-US yes, yes, . but, we are looking down the en-US barrel of a massive problem. en-US Actually, it already is a problem. The en-US roads. They are crammed packed, many are en-US rough, narrow, and unsafe for drivers. en-US Many lack sidewalks, I see children walking en-US in the dirt. Then, there are the sewers. Sewen-US -en-US age still seeps into the river. This is unacen-US -en-US ceptable. en-US I urge the leaders to pause and think. We en-US need to think of the future. Not just build en-US build build now. Let's not build another en-US house or shopping center without thinking en-US of what we need now. The future of this en-US county, its health, depends on you our en-US leaders, and you the residents.en-US Stop this insanity. Roads, sidewalks, sewen-US -en-US ers, schools, police, and the like should be en-US all in place before we build one more thing. en-US Lastly, I urge the residents to voice their en-US concerns to their leaders. Great leaders en-US look past today and seek what is best for en-US tomorrow.en-USBrevard County needs to assure en-US safety of those in cross walksen-USDo you know what it is like to lose a en-US child? en-US I don't either and pray I never find out.en-US But here in Brevard County, I think they en-US are putting many at risk.en-US The other day, I was driving along Baben-US -en-US cock Street near Florida Tech, and I stopped en-US for two college students walking across the en-US crosswalk. Well, I was the only one to do so, en-US and was forced by the driver's horn blaring en-US behind me to move along. en-US Isn't it the law to stop when there are en-US pedestrians waiting to cross? en-US How is it that on U.S. 1 at the Yellow Dog, en-US they have a crossing areas with lights, but en-US not at Florida Tech where many students en-US walk back and forth to school? en-US What floors me is how Florida Tech en-US doesn't pitch a fit about the safety of its stuen-US-en-US dents.en-US Not only is this area bad, but other areas en-US in Brevard are as well.en-US It is difficult, while driving at night, to see en-US people waiting to walk across the street.en-US Lights on pedestrian crossing signs en-US would greatly help protect people.en-US Fort Myers had a huge issue with this, en-US and they made some major safety changes en-US and heavy fines. Guess what? People stop at en-US those crosswalks. They slow down to check, en-US they don't blare on the horns for one to en-US drive across. en-US Brevard can do this, too. They just need en-US to do it. They need to care about the safety en-US of their citizens and visitors before someen-US-en-US thing terrible happens!en-US Stop school invasions en-US en-US by restricting accessen-USI have worked fot 18 years in corrections en-US and have spent many hours with criminals.en-US I'd like to throw out a thought for discusen-US -en-US sion.en-US You can't stop someone from getting en-US illegal weapons.
