I en-US get a lot of calls from people whove never en-US bought a car from me. They call to tell me en-US of their bad experience with another dealer en-US and, when I get several calls on the same en-US subject, I write a column on it. People often en-US call me asking for advice or assistance after en-US theyve already bought, which is closing en-US the barn door after the horse is gone. On en-US more than one occasion Ive called car en-US dealers asking them to consider undoing a en-US wrong they have caused one of their en-US customers. I must confess that my batting en-US average on this effort is below 300. I wont en-US give up, however. One of my most recent en-US calls was from a customer who was charged en-US nearly a $1,000 in service work performed en-US on her car when she had brought it in for a en-US routine service that should have cost her en-US less than $100. She called me for help and en-US was forceful and diligent in following my en-US advice. She got a complete refund on the en-US unasked for, unnecessary charges.en-US One thing that amazes me about these en-US weekly columns and my radio show is that I en-US have been writing and airing for nearly 14 en-US years is that no car dealer has ever called en-US me to complain, or for any other reason. en-US Ive not been sued either. I think that says en-US something about the truth of my articles. en-US Im not a lawyer, but I do know that you en-US cant successfully sue somebody for libel or en-US slander if they write or say the truth. 4 en-USand demanding a recount. Regardless of the en-US senators demands, Florida law requires a en-US recount when the margin is less than 5 peren-US -en-US cent. As of Sunday Nov. 11, Gov. Scotts lead en-US over Sen. Nelson had shrunk to less than en-US 15,000 votes out of more than eight million en-US cast, a margin of only 0.15 percent. Martin en-US County Supervisor of Elections Vicki Davis en-US said that day she was ready for the recount en-US order from the state.en-US We have received and publicly en-US announced word that a conditional machine en-US recount may occur, she said. In the meanen-US -en-US time, our office is standing by and fully preen-US -en-US pared to conduct a recount by whatever en-US means the Florida Division of Elections en-US directsand at any moment such an order en-US may appear.en-US Floridas 67 counties will have until en-US Thursday, Nov. 15 to submit their machine en-US recounts, and if the margin remains the en-US same in the senate race, it would also trigger en-US a hand recount. The states supervisors of en-US elections would then have three days to peren-US -en-US sonally inspect ballots with overvotes or en-US undervotes. The more complicated scenario en-US is not expected for the governors race where en-US Republican Ron DeSantis 0.41-percent lead en-US over Tallahassee Mayor Andrew would not en-US meet the 0.25 percent threshold for a manuen-US -en-US al recount.en-US As far as the Floridas race for commisen-US -en-US sioner of agriculture, Fort Lauderdale attoren-US -en-US ney and Democratic candidate Nicole en-US Nikki Fried led Republican challenger en-US Rep. Matt Caldwell by a mere 2,914 votes as en-US of 8:20 p.m. Nov. 8 for the seat of outgoing en-US Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam. en-US That minute difference has also triggered a en-US mandatory machine recount. en-US Unofficial Martin County tallies for the en-US contested senatorial race were 46,726 votes en-US cast for Mr. Scott and 30,673 votes for Sen. en-US Nelson. In the gubernatorial race, Mr. en-US Desantis earned 61,5 percent or 47,840 of en-US the local votes, compared to 29,130 cast for en-US Mayor Gillum. Mr. Caldwell won 47,080 en-US votes -or 61.66 percent -compared to en-US 29,270 cast for Ms. Fried. en-US Floridas new attorney general is Republien-US -en-US can Ashley Moody, who led Democrat Sean en-US Shaw by more than 500,000 votes. Sixty-four en-US percent of Martin County registered voters en-US chose Ms. Moody over Mr. Shaw, who en-US received 25,800 votes. Floridas Chief Finanen-US-en-US cial Officer Jimmy Patronis held onto that en-US title with 52 percent of the vote over Demoen-US -en-US cratic challenger Jeremy Ring. Locally, en-US 47,874 voters cast ballots for the incumbent, en-US while Mr. Ring earned 36 percent of the vote en-US with 27,117 votes. en-US In the race for the District 18 seat of the en-US U.S. House of Representatives, incumbent en-US Brian Mast defeated Democratic challenger en-US Lauren Baer with 54 percent of the vote en-US statewide. Locally, 50,226 Martin County en-US residents cast votes for Rep. Mr. Levy earned 28,416 en-US votes in that race locally, Ms. Harrell won en-US district-wide with 47 percent of the vote. en-US Republicans also won in the two state repen-US -en-US resentative races, with MaryLynn Magar en-US getting 64.6 percent of the local votes cast in en-US the District 82 race and Democrat Edward en-US Francis OConner receiving 15, 664 votes. en-US In the District 83 race, Republican Toby en-US Overdorf beat Democrat Matt Theobald, en-US with 18,840 votes to 12,489 earned by Mr. en-US Theobald. en-US On a much more local level, Republican en-US Stacy Hetherington won the District 2 Maren-US -en-US tin County Commission seat by a landslide, en-US with 64 percent or 47,472 votes to indepenen-US -en-US dent challenger Joe Banfis 25,628 votes. en-US In the race for the 19th Judicial Circuit en-US bench seat, Robert Bob Meadows beat en-US challenger Nirlaine Smartt with 62.9 percent en-US of the 63,745 votes cast. en-US For the two open seats on the Sewalls en-US Point Town Commission, James Campo and en-US David Kurzman won the majority of the en-US 1,895 votes cast, with 783 and 615 votes en-US respectively to 593 earned by Johnny Cowen-US -en-US boy Colson. en-US The host of amendments on the ballot en-US during the 2018 mid-term elections includen-US-en-US ed two Martin specific issues: the Martin en-US County School Board half-cent sales surtax en-US and a yes or no vote on whether county voten-US -en-US ers wanted to have the School Board Superen-US -en-US intendent appointed rather than elected in en-US the future. Fifty-seven percent of registered en-US Martin voters opted for the additional en-US School Board tax, while nearly 60 percent of en-US voters wanted to have the school superinen-US -en-US tendent be an appointed position. en-US The rest of the Florida amendment results en-US were as follows: en-USAmendment one for the additional en-US $25,000 homestead exemption failed, even en-US though more than 63 percent of Martin voten-US -en-US ers had supported the amendment. en-US Amendment two for a permanent 10 peren-US -en-US cent cap on annual tax increases for en-US non-homesteaded property passed, with en-US 73.9 percent of Martin County support from en-US registered voters. en-US The majority of Florida voters also backed en-US Amendment 3, which took the right away en-US from the State Legislature to decide on any en-US new casinos opening in the state and put it en-US into the hands of the voters themselves. en-US More than 72 percent of local voters supen-US-en-US ported that amendment. en-US Amendment four passed, which allows en-US former convicted felons to regain their voten-US -en-US ing rights, with the exception for those conen-US -en-US victed of murder or sexual crimes. More en-US than 40 percent of Martin voters approved en-US that amendment. en-US Amendment number five requiring at en-US least a two-thirds vote of the Florida Legisen-US -en-US lature to raise taxes -instead of a simple en-US majority -handily passed, with more than en-US 70 percent of Martin voters backing it. en-US Amendment six expanding the scope of en-US crime victims rights passed, backed by 48.3 en-US percent of local voters. en-US Amendment seven on the mandatory en-US payment of death benefits to first responden-US -en-US ers who die in the line of duty and the payen-US -en-US ment of qualifying educational expenses of en-US their survivors passed, with 47.3 percent of en-US Martin voters supporting it. en-US Amendment nine, which linked the unreen-US -en-US lated prohibitions of offshore drilling in en-US state-controlled waters and indoor vaping en-US passed, with 52 percent of local citizens en-US backing the measure. I see en-US this as a waste of taxpayer money. It does en-US absolutely nothing to make the public safer en-US and possibly puts at risk the life of someone en-US who has had a life failure and is back on the en-US road to being a productive citizen, spouse en-US and parent. Numerous studies have shown en-US that those on the registry are, more than en-US likely, the least to be concerned with. en-US Ninety percent of sexual assault victims en-US know their attacker. "Stranger Danger" is a en-US myth. Ninety-five percent of sexual offenses en-US are committed by someone who is not on en-US the registry. The recidivism rate for sex en-US offenders is 3.5 percent, the rate for all classen-US-en-US es of crime, is roughly 67 percent. There is en-US no scholarly study that conclusively demonen-US-en-US strates that sex offender registries make our en-US communities any safer, in fact they could en-US contribute to problems. en-US As a parent, I would be more concerned en-US about what a drug dealer might slip into my en-US child's collection bag or people who are on en-US the road so inebriated with holiday cheer en-US that I and my child might become an uninen-US -en-US tended target.en-USOlder trick or treaters en-US leave trash behinden-USMy wife and I collected a lot of trash en-US walking around one block the morning after en-US Halloween. We collected candy wrappers, en-US beer bottles, water bottles and discarded en-US masks.en-US We are happy to celebrate Halloween and en-US every year we buy and give out lots of candy. en-US The little kids in costumes are wonderful en-US and you can see how excited they are to en-US roam the neighborhood and collect candy.en-US The problem is groups of teenagers, no en-US costumes, carrying backpacks and pillow en-US slips to snag as much as they can, as fast as en-US they can. Then they tear off the wrappers en-US and leave their trash wherever it falls.en-US We had some kids that were 18 years old en-US and older. I know because they graduated en-US high school last year, and since they don't en-US bother with costumes, you know who they en-US are. These kids need to find other activities en-US rather than competing with little kids to en-US grab candy and leave trash.en-USA change in Americaen-USIt seems that we have let Make America en-US Great Again go to our head, under the curen-US -en-US rent President no longer are we the United en-US States of America, we are America; divided en-US by lying and talking out the side of our neck.en-US I think we as the Republican Party have en-US no moral or ethical values, we are using en-US common sense. Also, they should be out of trouble for en-US a minimum amount of time after they have en-US done their time, paid their restitution or en-US whatever.en-US A person who commits a felony, especialen-US -en-US ly a violent one, is not the best of our citien-US-en-US zens. They lose the right to have firearms, to en-US vote and other things. I am all for second en-US chances, but people have to try hard to stay en-US out of trouble. en-USNo vote, no taxesen-USReading about the fourth amendment on en-US the ballot brought to mind one of the princien-US -en-US ples of our founding fathers.en-US Taxation without representation is tyranen-US -en-US ny. Is it that much cheaper to pave the en-US road with blacktop? We pay plenty in taxes. en-US Any little thing to cool things off here helps, en-US like shade, lighter colored roadways and en-US select clearing of shade trees during conen-US -en-US struction. What are these builders thinking en-US of, other than profit? Its time people started en-US to wake up and speak up. It is later than you en-US think, folks say something. As a result, the City of en-US Stuart and the County Commission eventuen-US -en-US ally approved an interlocal agreement. en-US Once the interlocal was installed, the city en-US hired Captech consulting engineers to take a en-US look at the issues along that roadway and en-US some possible solutions for it, he added. In en-US May of 2013, Captech presented to the en-US Commission a presentation that discussed en-US corridor issues and possible solutions such en-US as traffic signals, roundabouts and alternate en-US route evaluations. None of the proposed en-US conceptual ideas were ever constructed.en-US Commissioner Merritt Matheson then en-US prodded Mr. Voelker with questions on how en-US the city could move forward.en-US The whole general theme seems to be on en-US Palm City Road traffic calming, he said. In en-US 2004, Mr. Amerson suggested speed bumps, en-US and I wonder why in 2015 those speed en-US bumps or speed tables were removed. Do en-US you know, Mr. Voelker?en-US The assistant public works director en-US attributed the eventual removal of the traffic en-US calming devices to the requests of certain en-US residents who believed they were no longer en-US needed.en-US Back in when those were installed, en-US the issue was the stacking at the south end en-US and people trying to get in and out of the en-US driveways, he said. The thought was to put en-US in those speed bumps to try and gap the en-US traffic. Since that time, the Indian Street en-US Bridge was opened and has helped allevien-US-en-US ate it so I guess with that meeting it was en-US determined to remove them.en-US His explanation failed to satisfy Commisen-US-en-US sioner Matheson, who wanted the Commisen-US -en-US sion to consider restoring the speed tables en-US and potentially closing the U.S. 1 southen-US-en-US bound ramp onto Palm City Road, freen-US -en-US quently referred to by traffic engineers as a en-US hot right.en-US Im looking for a passive way to get peoen-US -en-US ple to follow the posted speed limit without en-US our police force doing that, whether its naren-US -en-US rowing the lanes, putting back the speed en-US bumps that were removed or potentially en-US blocking off that hot-right, he said. It en-US seems to be incredibly hard for the populaen-US-en-US tion to go from approximately 40 or 50 miles en-US an hour from the Roosevelt Bridge and they en-US can easily bear right and those rumble strips en-US dont seem to be slowing people down. If en-US there was just the traditional right hand-en-US turn at the traffic light, they would have to en-US come to a complete stop or near so to take a en-US 90-degree right-hand turn.en-US The commissioner subsequently made a en-US motion to have staff study the possibility of en-US blocking off the ramp and potentially reinen-US -en-US stalling the speed tables. Before another en-US member of the Commission had the time to en-US question the motion or consider seconding en-US it, Mayor Kelli Glass-Leighton questioned en-US whether the recently inaugurated commisen-US -en-US sioner had already spoken with staff on the en-US long-term issue.en-US Commissioner [Eula} Clarke and I are en-US the only ones that sat on this Board for the en-US last several years where this would probably en-US be the fourth time this is coming in front of en-US us, she said. Have you gotten a recap of all en-US of the meetings and whats already been en-US done? Theres a reason why things have en-US happened the way they have.en-US When Commissioner Matheson insisted en-US hed already spoken to staff and continued to en-US express incredulity that Stuart officials en-US removed the speed tables, City Attorney en-US Michael Mortell offered to provide his long-en-US time insight into the matter. en-US The residents of Circle Bay and Winden-US -en-US jammer said well if you put speed bumps in, en-US maybe you could create separation between en-US the cars at the end of the road, he explained. en-US It turned out that it didnt because the volen-US-en-US ume of cars exceeded what the speed bumps en-US could regulate. One of the reasons for the en-US meetings and the discussions was that Florien-US -en-US da Department of Transportation had come en-US forward and said they were going to do a en-US study and make improvements. Well, en-US FDOTs [subsequent] report said once the en-US Indian Street Bridge was built, [that] en-US relieved the traffic at the intersection of en-US Palm City Road and Monterey sufficiently. en-US That group of residents then took a position en-US that the noise coming from the cars going en-US over the speed bumps was not worth the en-US benefit they were receiving.en-US The city attorneys further explanation en-US appeared to somewhat appease Commisen-US-en-US sioner Matheson, who still worried Stuart en-US Police officers were having to patrol the en-US roadway too much in order to enforce the en-US speed limit. Mr. Mortell, however insisted en-US the officers had discovered the high traffic en-US volume contributed to the false illusion of en-US high speeds.en-US Believe it or not, the Police Department en-US did do a report before they changed the en-US speed from 25 to 35, he added. It turned en-USout like 90 percent of the cars were going 35 en-US miles an hour, and that in reality speeding en-US was an anomaly. The residents have a peren-US -en-US ception of high speed because of the numen-US -en-US ber of cars going through, but the reality was en-US when speeds were measured, it really was en-US right at 35 miles an hour.en-US For her part, Commissioner Clarke conen-US -en-US curred with Commissioner Matheson on en-US the ongoing concern among the residents. en-US It is a problem -its a behavior issue -en-US and maybe we can do something to deal en-US with behavior, but that is hard, she said. en-US Actually Im glad that Mr. Matheson en-US brought this up because we brought it up at en-US the MPO [Metropolitan Planning Organizaen-US -en-US tion] meeting this morning. Its going to en-US take some time to change that behavior, but en-US we may have to restudy the hot right with en-US DOT and see how we can try to address it en-US on U.S. 1.en-US Several members of the public also spoke, en-US including Sally Franklin, who lives on the en-US corner of Palm City Road and Southwest en-US Manor Drive and expressed frustration that en-US recently added sidewalks did not all follow en-US the pattern of one built near a supermarket.en-US We were led to believe that those crossen-US -en-US walks were going to be raised crosswalks en-US like the one at Publix, she said. Thats why en-US we were okay with them taking the speed en-US bumps out. Some of us had been talking at en-US the time with Chief Dyess, Sam Emerson en-US and Commissioner Campenni, trying to figen-US-en-US ure out how we can go back and get those en-US speed bumps placed back in and raise those en-US crosswalks. en-US Mr. Mortell then reminded the Commisen-US -en-US sion that Commissioner Mathesons original en-US motion was still on the floor, so Mayor en-US Glass-Leighton asked the city clerk to read it en-US back to the Board. When that motion died en-US for lack of a second, Commissioner Mike en-US Meier offered a substitute motion due to his en-US own issues trying to bicycle along Palm City en-US Road without sufficient sidewalk connectiven-US -en-US ity.en-US As somebody who rides my bike around en-US a lot and walks around a lot, the state of the en-US sidewalks along Palm City Road are pitiful, en-US he said. They abruptly end in the middle of en-US a block so Ill move we ask staff to look en-US into extending and connecting what sideen-US-en-US walk options we could have on Palm City en-US Road.en-US Commissioner Clarke seconded that en-US motion, which passed unanimously. en-USCalendaren-USFrom page 7en-USTrafficen-USFrom page 1
9 Interfaith Alliance of the en-USTreasure Coast to hold en-US gratitude serviceen-USThe Interfaith Alliance of the Treasure en-US Coast is inviting the public to come together en-US in unity and gratitude at its Interfaith en-US Thanksgiving Service at 3 p.m. on Sunday, en-US Nov. 18, at Unity of Stuart, 211 S.E. All love offerings will be donated en-US to the House of Hope.en-US At a time when there is such division en-US among various races, ethnic groups and relien-US -en-US gious faiths, the Interfaith Alliance of the en-US Treasure Coast formed to help build bridges en-US of understanding to try to overcome the en-US walls that divide us, said Lowell Kafer, who en-US has a doctorate in philosophy and is a memen-US -en-US ber of the Interfaith Alliance of the Treasure en-US Coast.en-US Unity of Stuart is hosting this years event. en-US Last November, the newly formed organizaen-US -en-US tion held its first Interfaith Thanksgiving en-US service at the Unitarian Church in Stuart.en-US It was heartwarming to see many people en-US from all races, ethnic groups and faiths en-US come together to give thanks and celebrate en-US the freedoms and blessings we all enjoy as en-US Americans, said Kafer.en-US For more information, email Roberta Scott en-US at en-US email@example.com en-US or call (772) en-US 631-1233.en-US The Interfaith Alliance of the Treasure en-US Coast, which includes humanist and en-US non-theists, was formed in September 2016. en-US Its mission is to create a more peaceful, en-US more harmonious community by encouragen-US-en-US ing and facilitating a greater interest, underen-US -en-US standing, respect and cooperation among en-US the countys many faith traditions. By focusen-US -en-US ing on shared core values, the organizations en-US members believe they can work together for en-US the betterment of all.en-USNotesen-USFrom page 2 en-USHow everything is en-US connected on your PCen-USTen-UShis week, I thought we would talk en-US about how everything in the en-US computer is connected. By connecten-US -en-US ed I dont mean by wires and other en-US mechanical means, but internally, through en-US the computers filing system. en-US Often I hear people say that a particular en-US file (picture or text) is in my word en-US processor or its in my email program. en-US That implies that the file in question can be en-US accessed only with that particular program. en-US Not so. en-US Let me explain; most programs on your en-US computer are capable of opening different en-US types of files. For instance, word processors en-US such as Microsoft Word or Works Word en-US Processor are for working with text files, en-US while photo editors, such as Paint Shop Pro en-US and PhotoShop are just the thing for en-US working with pictures. en-US The files themselves are not stored en-US within the program, they are stored en-US somewhere on the hard drive, available to en-US any program capable of working with them. en-US That means you can share files often times en-US with many other programs. All you really en-US need to know is where on your hard drive en-US the files really live. en-US This is an example of a typical file name en-US complete with its path on the hard drive: en-US c:\users\owner\documents\filename.docxen-US en-US The path tells how to get to a files location en-US on the hard drive. en-US Lets take a closer look: The c:\ indicates en-US what disk drive the file is stored on. Each en-US disk drive on the computer has a letter en-US assigned to it with a: and b: reserved for en-US floppy drives (remember those?), your hard en-US drive (c:), and your CD-Rom (typically d:), en-US and so on. The drive letter is how we know en-US what drive the file we are working with en-US resides on. en-US The next part of our path, users\, is the en-US first folder or directory. Just like the manila en-US folders you use in a file cabinet keep files en-US organized, directories on your computer en-US organize your computer files. Each en-US directory is separated by a back slash (\) en-US and you can have directories within en-US directories. en-US In our example, the documents folder en-US is in the owner folder, which is in the en-US users folder, which is on the c: drive. en-US The last part of our path is the actual file en-US name. en-US A typical file name comes in two parts, en-US the name, separated by a dot and the en-US extension. The name is what we call the file en-US when we saved it (a fairly important thing en-US to note when saving). And the extension en-US tells the computer what kind of file it is so it en-US knows what kind of program can open it.en-US en-US Once you know the path to a particular file, en-US you can access it from most of your favorite en-US programs. en-US For instance, say you got a picture en-US e-mailed to you and you want to use that en-US picture in a letter you are writing with your en-US word processor. en-US The first step in getting the picture into en-US your letter happens when you save the en-US picture from e-mail. Make a note of the full en-US path and file name when you save it and en-US you can access it any time. en-US When you are ready to import your en-US picture, use the insert menu (typical on en-US most word processors) to load your picture. en-US When the dialogue box comes up asking en-US what file you want to insert, you can type in en-US the files full path and filename or easier en-US yet, just navigate to the file by double en-US clicking. Start in the my pc window and en-US double click the drive letter, each folder and en-US end with the file name, if typing, separate en-US your folders with back slashes and dont en-US forget the extension after the dot. Then en-US click OK. You should have your picture en-US inserted into your letter. en-US As you can see, the path and file name is en-US enormously important. So often I hear, its en-US on my hard drive, but I dont know where en-US or that file is in my word processor. If you en-US pay attention to what name and folder the en-US file is saved under when you save it, youll en-US never misplace another file. en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. 14 en-USAen-USs I have watched the election results en-US here in Florida over the weekend, I en-US found myself wondering if we were en-US headed for yet another fiasco. Only this en-US time, three races are being affected, not just en-US one. The races to determine our next en-US Governor, Senator and Commissioner of en-US Agriculture are all too close to call. en-US Ron DeSantis leads Andrew Gillum by en-US about 35,000 votes. Rick Scott leads Bill en-US Nelson by just over 13,000 votes and Nicole en-US Fried leads Matt Caldwell by a mere 5,000 en-US votes. Each of these will eventually, or so we en-US hope, be decided when the final re-count of en-US votes is complete.en-US The craziness of thinking that our fine en-US state will once again be the butt of late night en-US jokes gave me such a headache that I dozed en-US off on the sofa and in the middle of my en-US restless sleep, I began to dream. Instead of en-US spending millions upon millions in attorney en-US fees, each fighting to get their way, the en-US candidates agreed to settle the matter like en-US people of old. The races would be settled in en-US a sporting manner, on the golf course.en-US The first problem was deciding which en-US golf course would host this competition. en-US President Donald Trump quickly stepped en-US up and invited everyone to his Trump en-US International Golf Club in West Palm en-US Beach. To say this did not go over well with en-US the Democrats, would be putting it mildly. en-US There would be no home-field advantage.en-US The six of them finally decided on a en-US course, the name and location of which en-US shall be kept secret to protect the innocent, en-US and the matches were officially on.en-US DeSantis arrived first. He headed to the en-US driving range and began pounding balls to en-US the far side of the range. Gillum arrived en-US next and decided he would start by rolling en-US in some putts on the practice green. en-US Both Scott and Nelson nearly missed en-US their 10 a.m. start. Scotts excuse involved en-US something about dumping fresh, bottled en-US water into the St. Lucie River, while Nelson en-US simply over-slept.en-US Fried and Caldwell were the last to show. en-US It appears their tractors were not equipped en-US with the latest GPS systems and they wound en-US up helping a farmer plow a field before en-US making it to the golf course. Of the six en-US competitors, this pair was, by far, the most en-US civil. en-US Of course, I was chosen to referee the en-US match. All six candidates wanted input en-US from the gallery to decide which set of tees en-US to play from. The Democrats wanted to en-US make sure that everyone would get to vote en-US and that each of those votes would be en-US counted. The Republicans agreed, but just en-US as we were about to tee off, a box of en-US uncounted votes turned up sitting next to en-US the hot dog cart by the range. We spent the en-US next hour debating whether those votes en-US were legitimate or not.en-US The event would be played under match en-US play rules. In honor of our electoral college, en-US winning the harder holes would be worth en-US more than winning the easier holes. It en-US would be the candidate who won the most en-US electoral handicap points who would en-US occupy his or her respective office. en-US Confused? So was I, but somehow it en-US made perfect sense to the politicians.en-US At the first tee, I went through the en-US candidates bags and made sure that en-US they only had 14 clubs, had properly en-US marked and could identify their golf en-US balls, and decided who would hit first. en-US Gillum had too many clubs, and golf en-US balls that were marked, I love the FBI. en-US Predictably, Scotts golf balls were en-US marked Go Navy, and he quickly en-US proceeded to hit a couple into the lake on en-US the first hole. Oddly, he thought that since en-US they were Navy golf balls, they would like en-US the water and float. Maybe he picked up the en-US submarine ones instead.en-US DeSantis had mysteriously replaced most en-US of his woods with rifles and other firearms. en-US After producing the proper permits and en-US promising to observe a two-hole waiting en-US period before firing them, he was allowed en-US to bring his weapons along.en-US After the seventh hole Scott and DeSantis en-US each had an early lead. Many of the Gillum en-US supporters nearly went home after DeSantis en-US made a remarkable birdie at the 15th. en-US Gillum was so shaken that he conceded the en-US match and then realized he still had a en-US chance to win due to an odd scorekeeping en-US mix up. Apparently, the scorekeepers had en-US forgotten to count all of DeSantis strokes. en-US Gillum withdrew his concession as en-US scorekeepers began a stroke re-count.en-US The same thing happened in the Scott/en-US Nelson match. Midway through the back en-US nine, Scott had what he felt was an insuren-US -en-US mountable lead and declared himself the en-US winner. Nelson was taken aback and found en-US there to be the same poor scorekeeping in en-US his match.en-US At the 18th hole, we encountered a major en-US problem, a problem that would muddle the en-US entire event. It seemed that the gallery had en-US inadvertently trampled the tee shots of each en-US of the candidates, and they were all faced en-US with a terrible lie.en-US Come to find out, some of the gallery had en-US mistakenly thought that they were tramen-US -en-US pling President Trumps ball, while the rest en-US had been told that Hillary Clinton had en-US snuck in and was playing in the event, en-US hoping to undo her loss from two years ago.en-US All the candidates stood lock-jawed in en-US the middle of the fairway, each refusing to en-US hit his or her approach shot until things en-US were resolved.en-US Just about then, darkness fell upon the en-US course and my alarm went off. I shook the en-UScobwebs from my head and tried to en-US convince myself that it was just a dream. en-US Then I picked up the morning paper. en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years. Garden Mums en-US come in many colors and styles. Garden en-US Mums are a staple to the holiday season and en-US represent the end of summer and the en-US beginning of fall. Mums are actually fairly en-US easy to grow and can withstand both low en-US and high humidity situations. Mums can en-US actually mimic the look of other flowers en-US such as the smaller flower of a daisy (Daisy en-US Mums) or the larger and fancier varieties en-US that can almost look like roses. You can get en-US Chrysanthemum plants in almost every en-US color but blue.en-US Mums have been around for a long time en-US and I am sure that many of you have helped en-US your parents or grandparents display these en-US colorful gems during the holidays. Most of en-US the varieties that we use here in North en-US America are simply known as Garden en-US Mums with the botanical classification of en-US Dendranthea grandiflorum. About 80 en-US percent of all garden Mums are sold during en-US the fall and early winter. The reason that en-US these colorful plants burst into bloom in fall en-US is because the shorter days, cooler temperaen-US -en-US tures and longer nights all contribute to the en-US triggering mechanism that causes these en-US plants to burst into color. Since this winter en-US is going be an El Nino winter, the forecast is en-US for a wet and cool winter season in Florida. en-US This should be great weather for Mums and en-US other winter flowers that love cooler en-US temperatures!en-US Many people simply buy their Mums in en-US the fall already in bloom from retailers. en-US Others like to plant their own plants and en-US watch them mature and bloom in their own en-US gardens. If you decide to try planting your en-US own, do so in the spring so the root systems en-US can have a chance to get well established to en-US ensure a happy, healthy plant. en-US Mums should be planted in a location en-US that will get only a half-day of sun or en-US slightly less. This is especially true in the en-US areas south of Vero Beach. The areas north en-US of Vero Beach will probably have better en-US results with growing Mums in your garden en-US as the harsh effects of the sun are slightly en-US lessened. You can ensure you will get more en-US flowers in the fall if you pinch back the top en-US inch or so of growth about every three en-US weeks until about mid July. This process en-US will help to en-US promote heavy en-US flowing in the fall. en-US Please note you en-US only do the above en-US process if you en-US plan on growing en-US and maintaining en-US your garden en-US Mums on a year en-US round basis.en-US Mums will en-US grow in a variety en-US of soils as long as en-US it is well drained. en-US Mums do not en-US require a lot of en-US fertilizer but will appreciate a light feeding en-US about once a month with a water-soluble en-US fertilizer such as Miracle Gro. It will also en-US help if you stake your plants, as this will en-US help them to support themselves and keep en-US the heavy Florida rains from knocking en-US them over.en-US If you plan on only using your Mums as a en-US potted decoration for the holidays, many of en-US the same rules will apply. Keep the plant in en-US a bright, well-lit area of the house and do en-US not let the plant get too dry between en-US watering cycles. Remember that potted en-US plants will dry out much faster then plants en-US that are placed in the ground. A/C will also en-US have an impact on your plant's moisture en-US level.en-US As you can see, having and taking care of en-US Mums does not have to be difficult. en-US Growing and viewing these plants can have en-US so many rewards that any work involved in en-US keeping them looking nice will be well en-US worth it.en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape. 16 en-USWen-UShat is all the fuss about eating en-US turkey? OK, OK, its high in en-US protein and low in fat, a low-carb en-US dieters dream. It is also an inexpensive en-US source of iron, zinc, phosphorus, potassium en-US and B-vitamins. en-US Turkey does have a strange power, en-US though. It has the ability to be a natural en-US sedative. Turkey has an amino acid called en-US tryptophan that helps the body produce the en-US B-vitamin niacin, which in turn helps the en-US body to produce serotonin that acts as a en-US calming agent in the brain and plays a role en-US in sleep. Now you know why everyone falls en-US asleep after Thanksgiving dinners. en-US By the way, it was Abraham Lincoln who en-US had Thanksgiving declared a federal en-US holiday in 1864.en-US Turkey is a variety of the pheasant and en-US recent fossil evidence shows turkeys have en-US roamed the Americas for 10 million years. I en-US cant quite understand that dinosaurs didnt en-US make it, but turkeys did. en-US The Aztecs are believed to be the first to en-US domesticate the turkey. And Christopher en-US Columbus brought turkeys back to Europe en-US and, by the 1500s, turkeys were being raised en-US domestically in Italy, France and England en-US for royalty and the aristocracy.en-US Turkey with all the trimmings was the en-US first meal eaten on the moon by astronauts en-US Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.en-US Now that you know what all the fuss is en-US over turkeys, lets talk about the best part en-US eating turkey. Do you like it smoked, fried, en-US braised, baked, boiled or stewed? What is en-US best is really up to you, but here are a few en-US tips that might help: en-US Purchase at least one pound of en-US uncooked turkey per person for dinner and en-US leftovers. If your family members have big en-US appetites figure on one and one half pounds en-US per person.en-US Fresh or frozen? Both are great choices. en-US I prefer fresh, though. I think it is a little en-US moister when cooked. Fresh turkey may en-US only be kept in the refrigerator one to two en-US days before cooking.en-US Frozen turkey should be thawed in the en-US refrigerator. 8 to 12 lbs. 1 to 2 da ys 12 to 16 lbs. 2 to 3 da ys 16 to 20 lbs. 3 to 4 da ys 20 to 24 lbs. 4 to 5 da ys en-US Once the turkey is thawed, it may only en-US be refrigerated one to two days before en-US cooking.en-US It is best to cook stuffing outside the en-US bird in a separate dish. The turkey will cook en-US faster, and the breast will retain moisture en-US better. If you decide to stuff the turkey, stuff en-US it just prior to cooking. Dressing should en-US cook to an internal temperature of 165 en-US degrees. en-US How much stuffing is enough? Usually en-US one cup per pound of turkey.en-US A thermometer is the best way to tell if en-US a turkey is done. The dark meat must reach en-US 165 degrees. Be careful not to touch bone en-US when temping, as you will get an inaccurate en-US reading. When reheating turkey the next en-US day, it should be heated to 165 degrees.en-US To store cooked turkey, it should be en-US placed in a covered container, plastic food en-US bag, or wax paper and aluminum foil for up en-US to 7 days in the refrigerator or three months en-US in the freezer.en-US Season the cavity with your secret en-US ingredients for best results. As for myself, I en-US love garlic hmmm, my father used to call en-US it Greek perfume!en-US My all-time favorite sandwich, a turkey en-US club, involves left-over turkey, lettuce, en-US tomato, cheddar cheese, bacon, mayonen-US -en-US naise, on toasted bread.
