Some of the younger students speaking that en-US evening could barely see over the lectern, prompten-US -en-US ing Board Member Tina McSoley to request that en-US a step-stool be brought for just that purpose in en-US the future. The commissioner en-US asked city staff to create an online letter en-US template so residents could send unien-US -en-US form messages not only to the U.S. en-US Army Corps of Engineers and the South en-US Florida Water Management District, but en-US to all elected officials deemed necesen-US -en-US sary with their concerns about the en-US algae-laden water. en-US 3 en-USPALM CITY -Twenty-six years ago, a en-US young couple from New Jersey decided to en-US launch out on their own in new territory in en-US order to find their own hair-styling niche in en-US the world, ultimately founding Michael en-US Leonards Salon in Palm City. More than en-US 5,000 Treasure Coast residents have reaped en-US the benefits ever since, enjoying an extenen-US-en-US sive menu of salon services ranging from en-US manicures and pedicures to waxing seren-US -en-US vices, facial massages, AVEDA makeovers en-US and, of course, cutting-edge hair design. en-US The dream actually began in 1986 when en-US the former Kimberly Miele wandered into en-US DePasquale Colour and Design Salon in en-US Fair Lawn, N.J. and met the love of her life, en-US Michael Izzolo, who had started there shorten-US-en-US ly after graduating from the Artistic Acadeen-US -en-US my of Hair Design that same year. The two en-US eventually married and in 1992 followed en-US Ms. Izzolos parents down to Martin County en-US after she earned a bachelors of science en-US degree in marketing with a concentration in en-US the cosmetic, fragrance and toiletry indusen-US -en-US try. That same year they inaugurated en-US Michael Leonards Salon, whose namesake en-US says he never originally planned on making en-US a name for himself in the hairstyling indusen-US -en-US try.en-US Believe it or not I started in the sporting en-US goods industry working as a buyer, he said. en-US A good friend of mine owned a barber en-US shop in a nearby town and needed some en-US help on weekends at his front desk so I en-US decided to help him out. Watching him en-US work and interact with people, not having to en-US wear a suit every day, really intrigued me. en-US During those days I watched him work and en-US saw his talent and how much he enjoyed it en-US so I decided to try cosmetology school. en-US Mr. Izzolo spent six years under the en-US watchful eye of his mentor Carmen en-US DePasquale before his desire to strike out on en-US his own and his wifes goal to be closer to her en-US family in Florida prompted a new direction en-US for the couple.en-US The truth be told, I thought we would en-US have better luck bringing our work ethic en-US and education down to Florida than trying en-US to compete in the rat race of New York and en-US New Jersey, he admitted. en-US His hunch proved to be right. What began en-US as a newlywed operation 25 years ago with en-US six stylist stations and one nail technician en-US has mushroomed to 15 employees with a en-US variety of specializations over the ensuing en-US years. In 2007, they built a new, state-of-the-en-US art salon boasting 13 stylist stations, a color en-US processing bar/area and a nail department, en-US as well as private treatment rooms. Their en-US success has not gone unnoticed. In 2011, the en-US industry trade magazine Salon Today en-US named Michael Leonards its Salon of the en-US Year. Ms. Izzolo herself also has a long histoen-US -en-US ry in the beauty and fashion industries, even en-US before she graduated from The Fashion en-US Institute of Technology in New York City. en-US When I was a teenager, I worked not en-US only behind the counter for Christian Dior en-US at Bloomingdales, but I also as a freelance en-US makeup artist, she said. I would do photo en-US shoots with NYC fashion photographers, en-US weddings and a local TV show. My experien-US -en-US ence as a professional was credible, but en-US many years later after moving to Florida, I en-US did receive my cosmetology license.en-US Today Ms. Izzolo manages and oversees en-US the retail operations of the salon. She said en-US the most rewarding part of her career is the en-US creation of long-term relationships with en-US both clients and employees she considers en-US family, an atmosphere she strives to mainen-US -en-US tain at the salon. en-US We laugh together all the time, Ms. 927 NE Jensen Beach Blvd. Jensen Beach 772.334.2151 Mon.-Fri. 10am-5pm Sat. 10am-3pm www.jewelrydesignstudio.net Catch and Release License # MCNS4355 Better Quality Best Selection Better Prices Best Service Quality Isnt Expensive, Its PRICELESS!Hours: Monday to Friday 8am until 5:30pm 2512 Willoughby Blvd | Stuart WE DO REPAIRS, STAIRS, SAND & FINISH oorspecialistmartincounty.com | 772-223-9441 QUICKSTEPNature Tek Plus Waterproof$5.79InstalledARMSTRONGPet Friendly Scratch Resistant Lifetime Warranty$5.49InstalledHARDWOODWide, Long Planks European Oak, UV Oiled$8.99InstalledMOHAWK REVWOODStarting at $4.55 InstalledWATERPROOFLuxury Vinyl$4.99Installed 30-yr warrantyAll oers valid through October 12, 2018 Docks available. We celebrate marriages, births en-US and successes and sometimes mourn losses. en-US Our team is an extension of our own family, en-US and we together are very family oriented. en-US Some of our staff has been with us for en-US almost as long as we have been here.en-US Her husband added that the years togethen-US -en-US er have cemented the professional work en-US ethic of the group.en-US We can all learn from each other and en-US help one another grow and succeed because en-US thats what a team does, Mr. Izzolo said. en-US Together, we make up the best team of stylen-US -en-US ists on the Treasure Coast.en-US In addition to professional makeup seren-US -en-US vices, Michael Leonards offers an array of en-US skin care services, therapies and facials. The en-US salon can even be reserved after hours for en-US spa-themed parties to celebrate birthdays, en-US anniversaries, wedding parties or baby en-US showers.en-US Male patrons are not overlooked here en-US either. Michael en-US Leonards hair stylists are trained in the laten-US -en-US est hair fashion trends for both men and en-US women, so male customers can also expect en-US to turn heads upon leaving the salon.en-US Ever on the cusp of improvement and self en-US betterment, the Izzolos decided four years en-US ago to join forces with the Minnesota-based en-US Aveda Corporation, a manufacture of natuen-US -en-US ral skinand hair-care products made from en-US pure flower and plant essences. Michael en-US Leonards staff and its owners are proud to en-US be aligned with the company founded by en-US Horst Rechelbacher and now owned by en-US Este Lauder Companies.en-US With Aveda, there is constant training en-US and education as well as an even more en-US enhanced awareness of the latest hair care en-US advances and styles, Mr. Izzolo said.en-US His wife emphasized they finally found a en-US product line they could depend on in an en-US ever-changing industry.en-US We found so many products that work en-US well but many didnt offer the performance en-US that Aveda provided us, she explained. We en-US decided this was a great product that we en-US wanted to invest in, and so we embarked on en-US a new relationship with a proven successful en-US company.en-US The salon founder who made the leap en-US from sporting goods to hair styling said the en-US transformation and the ensuing journey en-US have given him a new-found passion and en-US helped him make long-time friends for en-US life. en-US My wife said to me the other day that not en-US once in 27 years of marriage have I woken en-US up and said I did not look forward to going en-US to work, Mr. Izzolo said. en-US Michael Leonards Salon is located at 3371 en-US S.W. When they finally got tough 6 years en-US ago, Gov. Scott and the Repubs in control all en-US stonewalled, and said these onerous reguen-US -en-US lations would be too hard on FL businesses. en-US Gov. Scott slashed the budgets of all 5 of en-US FLs water management districts, by 40 peren-US -en-US cent. Scientists and engineers were laid off; en-US all land buying projects seem to have en-US stopped. Then FLs Environmental Commisen-US -en-US sion, whose board is appointed by Governor en-US Scott, weakened criteria for 23 toxic chemien-US -en-US cals in FL waterways, allowing higher levels en-US of benzene, for instance.en-USLive clerks vs. machinesen-USA reader lamented the limited number of en-US live clerks vs. scan checkout options and his/en-US her preference for live clerks. I heartily en-US endorse those sentiments and clerks en-US replaced by machines certainly felt the same en-US way. Its a safe bet that overworked real peoen-US-en-US ple who are still employed are earning minien-US-en-US mum wage and stay because they dont have en-US a choice. Florida minimum wage is among en-US the lowest, if not the lowest in the nation.en-US Big corp billionaires tempt consumers en-US with low prices and the ease of ordering. en-US The downside is: lost jobs and lost privacy. en-US Every time you access the Internet for inforen-US -en-US mation and order via the internet you are en-US tracked and your information can be used en-US for more than marketing purposes. Apps en-US are required in some stores for sale items. en-US No app you pay regular price. The Interen-US -en-US net is largely responsible for the creation of en-US this go along to get along society.en-US This morning this headline caught my en-US attention: Should cashless retail stores be en-US banned? Amazon and Walmart are fighting en-US a New Jersey bill that would require stores to en-US accept cash, i.e., if corporations get their en-US way all purchases would have to be made via en-US plastic or app or from some other technical en-US device. Again, technology taking away conen-US-en-US sumer choice and rights.en-US Would Hometown News consider doing en-US a survey about how locals feel about this? en-US Businesses would benefit from the informaen-US-en-US tion which comes directly from consumers, en-US who should be the ones determining how en-US they want to do business.en-USAlso prefers live clerksen-USI happen to agree. People need to stop en-US and realize you don't get a discount for not en-US only doing your own shopping, but checken-US -en-US ing yourself out and bagging your items and en-US taking them to your car.en-US You're paying as much, if not more, and en-US there are less employees. The only place en-US making money off this scam is the store.en-US I have gotten into the habit now if there en-US are only one or two lanes open with a real en-US person and the lines are long, I go back into en-US the store, fill my cart to the brim with non-en-US food items and then leave it.en-US At least one of the few employees left in en-US the store might get some overtime pay for en-US putting the stuff back. If I want to self check, en-US I will stay home, save my gas and shop on en-US Amazon. At least they deliver.en-US'Give bicyclists more room'en-USWhere would you propose bicycle riders en-US ride? On the sidewalks that are meant for en-US pedestrians?en-US It sounds to me you are one of the people en-US who dont move over and give a bicycle rider en-US proper clearance. The only time I see a bicyen-US -en-US cle in the middle of the road is usually when en-US the rider is crossing a road, or going around en-US an obstacle, or in a neighborhood on a back en-US street. This is where you find the neighboren-US -en-US hood children riding who delight in racing en-US and riding in circles and generally doing en-US innocent kid stuff.en-US Bicycles are subject to the same rules as en-US motor vehicles. Just like motor vehicle operen-US -en-US ators, you will find some breaking the law, en-US riding against traffic. This is a danger to all en-US because most cars, when pulling out of a en-US driveway or into an intersection, are not en-US looking for bicycles riding on the wrong en-US side of the road, and just not paying attenen-US -en-US tion.en-US They should be ticketed as should a en-US motorist. Maybe we need more bicycle rider en-US education, but how in the world would en-US requiring a bicycle to be registered solve any en-US of these issues? How about motorists and en-US bicyclists alike use more of what seems to be en-US missing in large amounts these days comen-US -en-US mon sense and courtesy?en-US As it stands, the law is give bicyclists three en-US feet of clearance. That means stay three feet en-US off of the bicycle lane, not drive next to or en-US on the line. Give more than three feet when en-US driving highway speeds.en-USDemocratic socialism en-USoften misunderstooden-USA democratic socialist is not Marxist en-US socialist or communist.en-US A democratic socialist is one who seeks to en-US restrain the self-destructive excess of capien-US -en-US talism and channel the government's use of en-US our tax money into creating opportunities en-US for everyone.en-US Democratic socialists believe that the en-US economy and society should be run demoen-US -en-US cratically, to meet public needs not to make en-US profits for a few.en-US If you're tired of the rich getting richer, en-US consider socialism.en-US13 amendmentsen-USThe first two times I saw the amendments en-US published in a local newspaper, I read en-US through the article twice once increduen-US-en-US lously, the second more studiously and took en-US notes to try to understand what was being en-US proposed to no avail. There is no underen-US -en-US standing or reasoning behind these proposen-US -en-US als presented as they are, other than to conen-US -en-US fuse, obfuscate, and trick voters into voting en-US for some things / rules no one wants, and no en-US legislator wants to be blamed for. This is an en-US example of government at its worst.en-US I STRONGLY urge every voter to vote en-US NO on all 13 items. None of these need to en-US be elevated to the level of incorporation into en-US the states constitution, but should be en-US addressed individually by the legislature, en-US where each elected official must take a puben-US -en-US lic stand for or against each item. Vote NO en-US to the process which only serves to benefit, en-US via power and/or money, to a few, and takes en-US rights / power away from the people of the en-US state of Florida. en-US 7 en-USovercrowded. They dont have a diving pool, en-US so the divers wont have enough room for en-US them to dive and for us to swim. Itll all just en-US kind of be some big mess.en-US The co-captain of the Martin County en-US Swim Team, Dorian Fejzuli, has been swimen-US-en-US ming and practicing in the pool for the last en-US nine years. en-US We are the only school in the county en-US with our own pool on campus, and the conen-US -en-US venience of our pool is what makes us the en-US strong team we are, she said. If we were en-US forced to share Sailfish with Jensen, South en-US Fork and the Pine School, our meet scheden-US -en-US ule, practice times and overall success of our en-US debate on the topic, beginning with local en-US veterinarian Cristina Maldonado. She en-US described the cases of five dogs from the St. en-US Lucie River waterfront area that shed treaten-US-en-US ed for the same symptoms within the last en-US few weeks. en-US Ive now become the go-to veterinarian en-US for what appears to be an epidemic, she en-US said. I just wanted to share with you what en-US myself and other veterinarians have been en-US going through for the last two weeks, and en-US what some of our local families have been en-US going through as well. I did have them join en-US me because I think its important for you to en-US see the faces of the dogs that have been sick en-US and the faces of the owners whose dogs were en-US not so lucky.en-US Dr. Maldonado went on to describe the en-US cases of two area dogs that were brought to en-US her clinic. Pandora a two-year-old Pomeraen-US-en-US nian, and Costa, a four-year-old Golden en-US Retriever, who both snuck off from their en-US owners homes. Pandora apparently ate a en-US dead fish Aug. 26.en-US A couple hours later she was throwing up en-US and couldnt keep her head out of the water en-US bowl, she said. It was a near death situaen-US -en-US tion: She had severe elevations in liver en-US enzymes and decreased platelets. She was en-US hospitalized four and a half days and had en-US one plasma transfusion. We still dont know en-US what her future is and how much damage en-US that was done to her liver that will be peren-US -en-US manent. en-US In the case of Costa, whose family lives in en-US Rio, the Golden Retriever was brought back en-US from down by the river by an unsuspecting en-US neighbor.en-US She started vomiting and was lethargic, en-US Dr. Maldonado explained. By the time she en-US got to the emergency clinic, her belly was en-US distended with fluid, her liver enzymes were en-US off the charts, she had no platelets or cloten-US -en-US ting factors the same as Pandora. After en-US four days and three plasma transfusions, en-US shes pulled through. Well be monitoring en-US her once a week indefinitely.en-US Not all Dr. Maldonados cases have had a en-US happy ending, however. The Adeylotte famen-US-en-US ilys nine-year-old standard poodle, Finn, en-US who lived close to Costa, also ending up en-US lethargic and vomiting after sneaking off en-US down to the water. His owners took him to en-US their primary veterinarian, where he spent en-US eight hours before being transferred to an en-US emergency clinic. By the time he got to the en-US emergency clinic, he was unfortunately too en-US far gone, Dr. Maldonado explained. Even en-US with all the plasma transfusions we did and en-US everything the Adeylotte family did, he en-US didnt make it.en-US Alex Adeylotte spoke at the hearing, and en-US pleaded with commissioners to continue en-US pressuring the state and federal government en-US to stop the discharges from Lake en-US Okeechobee. The family agreed to an autopen-US -en-US sy on Finn so officials could know for ceren-US -en-US tain what took his life.en-US This is obviously more serious than just en-US respiratory issues, this is not just a rash, he en-US said. This algae killed my dog in 24 hours, en-US and he was a 50-pound dog. So what that en-US proves is a child could die just as easily or en-US even more easily, so its serious stuff. I dont en-US think the information was out there as to en-US how lethal this stuff really is and I just hope en-US more awareness is put out there for Finns en-US sake and for other families so they dont en-US have to go through what we went through.en-US Alexs grandmother, Jackie Pakonis, also en-US addressed the Commission:en-US What I would like you to consider is the en-US spraying of the glysophates and the Rounden-US-en-US up in our ponds and our lakes and in our en-US parks, she added. Its rampant, and I know en-US because I go to these parks a lot, and I have en-US seen this toxic chemical sprayed in the water en-US that leads to the river and all over the place en-US where little kids are playing. There are cities, en-US counties and states all over this country that en-US have banned this terrible chemical. How en-US long are we going to wait to do something?en-US Mayor Kelli Glass-Leighton then admiten-US-en-US ted she didnt know which chemicals the en-US city used and deferred to staff members. en-US City Attorney Michael Mortell confirmed en-US Ms. Pakonis allegations.en-US We do use Roundup, he said. en-US Mayor Glass-Leighton then passed the en-US gavel to Commissioner Becky Bruner so she en-US could make a motion.en-US I would like to make a motion that staff en-US look into using an organic, non chemical en-US based herbicide, she said. en-US Commissioner Mike Meier, who was also en-US sworn in that evening, seconded the motion, en-USwhich passed unanimously. en-US Public Works Director David Peters then en-US said he would report back to the Commisen-US -en-US sion on his findings by the next meeting.en-US Well look at the alternatives and provide en-US you with an update on what we propose to en-US do, he said. en-US Dr. Maldonado said that evening a pair of en-US other canines had also gotten ill more en-US recently, two Golden Retriever siblings that en-US lived on the water. en-US Dr. Maldonado believes that owners en-US whose pets get ill from the algae should not en-US be expected to pay the elevated cost for such en-US treatment.en-US Just so everybody knows, these plasma en-US transfusions cost $400 or $500 each, she en-US explained. Its not fair to these owners -I en-US dont think they should be responsible for all en-US these bills. en-US The veterinarian added that the Martin en-US County Sheriffs Office had done investigaen-US -en-US tions on each case and assured her that foul en-US play had not played a factor in any of the en-US reported cases. Researchers are also examen-US -en-US ining Finns brain for signs of BMAA, a en-US non-proteinogenic amino acid produced by en-US cyanobacteria thats suspected of contributen-US -en-US ing to degenerative neurological diseases en-US such as dementia and Parkinsons Disease. en-US Dr. Maldonado said Sept. 24 that BMAA en-US results are still pending, but other tests posien-US -en-US tively concluded that the blue-green algae en-US bacteria is the culprit in the canine sickness. en-US The autopsy was definitive: Finn had en-US microcystin in his blood, liver and urine at en-US toxic levels. 2201 SE Indian St., Stuart772-221-0627 www.VerticalsPlusStuart.com rf nt nb R E A D E R S 1C H O I C E 2015 2016 2015 2016 Family owned and operated since 1989 Open Monday-Friday 9-4rfn rffbbEnhance your home with the distinctive look of designer window treatments, custom-made and professionally installed for you.nf nf fn ft 2017 2017 C H O I C E R E A D E R S REVERSE MORTGAGE WILMER FLORESReal Estate Financial ProfessionalHablanos EspanolTAX FREE MONEY & NO MORTGAGE PAYMENTSImprove Your Lifestyle And Enjoy RetirementCall for more information772-207-4599 LENDER Nationwide now writing Homeowner Insurance in Martin and St. Lucie CountiesCall local agent Mike Boogaart 772-343-1963Atlantic Insurance Partners, Inc. 3725 SE Ocean Blvd., #104 Sewalls Point, FL 34996 Mike@aipagency.comProducts underwritten by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and Affiliated Companies. en-US 8 en-USteam would diminish greatly. So please, en-US allow us to keep swimming and bettering en-US ourselves because this pool means everyen-US -en-US thing to each and every one of us. en-US Retired Martin County High School en-US teacher Pat Biondi concurred with the stuen-US -en-US dents assessment, saying the District should en-US be ramping up the use of the pool named en-US after the late swimming teacher who spent en-US three decades there, rather than mothen-US-en-US balling it. en-US Although there is expense in operating en-US the Martin County Community Pool, it is en-US offset by the many benefits it provides, she en-US said. And like the other sports whose venen-US -en-US ues also cost money to maintain, swimming en-US is an integral part of the school system. en-US Youve heard how many teams are at this en-US pool and how many teams are at Sailfish en-US Splash -it would be nearly impossible for en-US all these teams to practice together.en-US Phyllis Fazoli wanted School Board memen-US-en-US bers to consider the economic benefit en-US brought to the community by the high en-US school pool. en-US If our club team that swims at this pool is en-US not viable because were forced out of the en-US pool, that hurts our community, she said. en-US Every year for the past four years, we have en-US hosted the Junior Olympics at the Sailfish en-US pool. Thats a big deal: 730 swimmers, their en-US parents and their coaches all come to this en-US area and stay in our hotels and eat food in en-US our restaurants. That brings money during en-US off season, so thats a pretty big deal.en-US Amy Wells Martin, the daughter of the en-US facilitys namesake who died in 2014, en-US reminded those in attendance that the Disen-US -en-US trict never actually paid for the pool to en-US begin with. en-US The pool was built in 1975 by the Kiwanen-US-en-US is Club: It was donated to the community, en-US they raised the money for this pool, they put en-US everything into building it and they gave it en-US to our community, she said. As stewards of en-US this pool, we as a community have the oblien-US -en-US gation to keep this pool. The facility was en-US there for these children, these young adults, en-US and what they got from it is lifelong learnen-US -en-US ing.en-US School Board member Tina McSoley en-US launched the Board discussion on the maten-US -en-US ter as soon as public comment ended, en-US reminding everyone that the District was en-US $98 million in a budget deficit for our capien-US -en-US tal expenditures over the next five years, en-US and that future budget cuts would affect en-US many extracurricular activities.en-US On top of that, we have been mandated en-US to harden schools -theres not enough en-US money to do that, she said. I want every en-US child in this county to be able to swim if en-US they want to swim, and I want every child in en-US this county to be able to play football and en-US flute and whatever else they want to do. I am en-US willing to make a motion tonight that we en-US dont close the pool or that we wait until en-US after the sales tax vote and see what hapen-US -en-US pens, but Im going to tell you these are the en-US hard decisions that are going to have to hapen-US -en-US pen after November.en-US Board Member Michael Diterlizzi secen-US-en-US onded her motion for discussion, but insisten-US -en-US ed questions raised by both the Board and en-US members of the public about the operation en-US of the pool and its relationship to Sailfish en-US Splash be answered in the future. He also en-US refuted comments by some members of the en-US public that the pool makes a profit.en-US It cost us hundreds of thousands of dolen-US-en-US lars a year to operate, and according to your en-US budget analysis, its losing about $160,000 a en-US year, he said. Not a big deal, but we need to en-US think about how were operating this, how en-US our staff is operating this pool, and just en-US some things I want addressed when we do en-US bring this back.en-US Board Member Marsha Powers reminded en-US her fellow Board members that major en-US money had been spent on pool renovations en-US several years ago and the group at the time en-US decided to wait until they were needed again en-US to discuss a possible closure.en-US I dont think were at that point where en-US were investing a lot of money into the genen-US -en-US eral maintenance of the pool, so Im okay en-US sticking with that decision and dealing with en-US it when we have to, she said. Right now we en-US have an investment that weve already made. en-US I dont think we need to discuss it dependen-US-en-US ing on what happens in November.en-US Chairwoman Christia Li Roberts also en-US opposed bringing the matter back after the en-US elections. At this point I dont think it needs en-US to even be brought back for an additional en-US discussion unless something happens tragien-US -en-US cally that we have limited funded and we en-US end up with an issue, she said.en-US Superintendent Laurie Gaylord had recen-US -en-US ommended the Board reject the closure en-US prior to the meeting and said the annual en-US maintenance was a small price to pay for en-US such benefits.en-US $100,000 or $150,000 to keep the pool en-USopen is not a lot when you think about what en-US it provides for us as an asset to the School en-US District, she said. en-US Board Member McSoley subsequently en-US amended her motion to satisfy the Board en-US majority. I withdraw my motion and make en-US an alternative motion that we not close the en-US pool and get the questions answered and get en-US them sent out to the public, she said. en-US Board Member DiTerlizzi seconded the en-US amended motion, which passed unanien-US -en-US mously to thunderous applause. But Ive received thousands of en-US replies from car buyers thanking me for en-US taking a stand against the Unfair and en-US Deceptive Trade Practice of dealer fees. I en-US thought that Id give it another try.en-US SUBJECT: ELIMINATE THE DEALER en-US FEEen-US I started in the retail auto business in en-US 1968, about 50 years ago, and I have seen a en-US lot of changes in the way we dealers sell cars en-US and the expectations of our customers. My en-US remarks in this column are made sincerely en-US and with a positive intent toward you and en-US your customers. Im not trying to tell you en-US how to run your business; Im suggesting a en-US change that will reward both you and your en-US customers.en-US Every car dealer in Florida (except me) en-US adds charges to the price of the cars he sells, en-US variously referred to as a dealer fee, en-US documentary fee, dealer prep fee, en-US electronic filing fee, notary fee, closing fee, en-US tag agency fee, e-filing fee, etc. This extra en-US charge is printed on your buyers orders and en-US is programmed into your computers. It is en-US regulated in many states including Califoren-US -en-US nia. You charge this fee to every customer en-US and it ranges from a few hundred dollars to en-US several thousand. Florida law requires that en-US you disclose in writing on the buyers order en-US that this charge represents profit to the en-US dealer. Florida law also requires that you en-US include this fee in all advertised prices. You en-US dont usually do this, and you get around en-US the law by limiting the number of adveren-US -en-US tised vehicles (as few as one). You also en-US disclose only in the fine print that there is a en-US dealer fee, but dont include in the price. en-US You dont even disclose the amount of the en-US fee. You usually have multiple dealer fees by en-US different names.en-US The argument that I hear from most car en-US dealers when I raise this issue is that the en-US dealer fee is fully disclosed to the buyer on en-US his buyers order. But, most car buyers are en-US totally unaware that they are paying this. en-US Who reads all the voluminous paperwork en-US associated with buying a car? The few who en-US notice it assume it is an official fee like en-US state sales tax or license and registration fee. en-US Those few astute buyers who do question en-US the fee are told that your dealership must en-US charge this fee on very car which is not en-US true. These astute buyers are also told that en-US all other car dealers charge similar fees. en-US This is almost true, but, as you know, my en-US dealership does not.en-US The reason you charge this fee is simply en-US to increase the price of the car and your en-US profit in such a manner that it is not en-US noticed by your customer. This is just plain en-US wrong. Dealers will admit this to me in en-US private conversations and some will admit en-US that they have considered eliminating the en-US fee as I have but are afraid of the drastic en-US effect to their bottom line. By being able to en-US count on an extra $999 in profit that the en-US customer is not aware of or believes is an en-US official fee, you can quote a price below en-US cost and end up making a profit. Or, if the en-US price you quote the customer does pay you en-US a nice profit, you can increase that by en-US several hundred dollars.en-US This extra, unseen profit is even better en-US for you because you dont pay your en-US salesmen a commission on it. Thats being en-US unfair to your employees as well as your en-US customers. When the rare, astute buyer en-US objects to the dealer fee, the right thing to en-US do would be to decrease the quoted price of en-US the car by the amount of the dealer fee. This en-US would have the same net effect of removing en-US it. The salesman wont permit this because en-US he will lose his commission (typically 25 LOOKING FORLEADERSHIP& GROWTH DEVELOPMENT ?772-631-4519 The JOHN MAXWELL Team RICK RUPERTO, PHDCHOOSE YOUR BUSINESS TRAINING WISELY! But, I have evolved as my en-US customers have evolved. My customers en-US expectations, level of education, and en-US sophistication are much higher today. Your en-US customers are no different. As I began en-US treating my customers, and employees, en-US better I discovered that they began treating en-US me better. Yes, I used to charge a dealer fee en-US ($495), and when I stopped charging it en-US many years ago, it was scary. But I did it en-US because I could no longer, in good conen-US -en-US science, mislead my customers. Just because en-US everybody else was doing the same thing en-US did not make it right.en-US Now here is the good news. A popular variety that is now en-US widely available at most garden centers is en-US Geraniums. Annual Geraniums are very en-US popular for their wide range of brilliant, en-US colorful flowers plus their foliage is also en-US very attractive. en-US The types and varieties of these colorful en-US plants vary widely from cultivars that grow en-US six inches high to some that grow to be en-US several feet tall. Geraniums need a bright en-US location with at least a couple of hours of en-US direct sun in order to thrive. These en-US wonderful plants also need to be planted in en-US well-drained soil otherwise the plants will en-US be prone to fungus infection and disease. en-US After planting your colorful treasures, en-US you will want to water them abundantly the en-US first few days, taking care to be sure they en-US drain between watering. Water regularly en-US thereafter still ensuring the plants drain and en-US the soil to dry out between watering en-US intervals. When you water your plants, try en-US to avoid getting water on the leaves of the en-US plant as this can lead to possible disease en-US problems. Do not plant geraniums where en-US they will receive their water from a en-US sprinkler system. en-US Geraniums are heavy feeders and if not en-US fertilized properly, their leaves may yellow en-US and drop. There are several options you can en-US use for fertilizer such as a slow release fertilen-US-en-US izer or a water-soluble fertilizer. The slow en-US release fertilizer will need less intervention en-US on your part as some products such as en-US Osmocote and Dynamite feed for as long as en-US six months. Water-soluble fertilizers such as en-US Miracle Gro provide a more immediate fix en-US but will require more frequent feedings en-US about every two to three weeks. The en-US water-soluble feeding solutions are quite en-US safe and there is little chance of burning en-US your plants. en-US There are a couple of things you can do en-US to prolong how long and how many flowers en-US your plants will produce. Probably the en-US single most important solution is to pinch en-US the spent flowers off the stems on a regular en-US basis. This will ensure a season of beautiful en-US color. Pinching also has the advantage of en-US helping to produce well-branched and full en-US plants. A good rule of thumb when en-US choosing your treasures is to pick plants en-US that not only have abundant flowers but en-US that have lots of tight buds also. Look for en-US dark green foliage with not a lot of yellow en-US leaves or yellowing at the tips of the leaves.en-US Todays garden tip: If you are growing en-US Crotons in a container inside your home, en-US yellowing, dropping leaves can often be a en-US problem. To avoid or reverse this problem, en-US there are several things that can help. First en-US of all, you should try to keep your plants at en-US a fairly constant temperature. These en-US tropical plants also enjoy a humid, moist en-US climate so misting the plant will help raise en-US the humidity levels around the leaves for en-US optimal growth. Water your plants on a en-US regular basis with tepid water and keep the en-US soil evenly moist. Be sure to provide bright en-US light near a window otherwise the plant en-US may shed leaves if the area is too dark. Also en-US be sure to fertilize once a month with a en-US water-soluble fertilizer. With a little care en-US and TLC, your colorful crotons will thrive en-US for many years to come and will add a en-US delicate tropical fare to your dcor. en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape.
