en-US 4 Earl Stewart is the owner and general en-USmanager of Earl Stewart Toyota in North en-US Palm Beach. The dealership is located at en-US 1215 N. Federal Highway in Lake Park. en-US Contact him at en-USwww.earlstewarttoyota.com, en-US call 561-358-1474, fax 561-658-0746 or en-US emailen-US earl@estoyota.com.en-US 1. Use a trusted third buyer buying en-US service. The top three are True Car (www.en-US TrueCar.com), Consumer Reports (https://en-US www.consumerreports.org/cro/car-prices-en-US build-buy-service/index.htm), and Costco en-US (https://CostcoAuto.com) The one caveat is en-US to be sure to deal directly with the TrueCar, en-US Costco, and Consumer Reports designated en-US individuals in the their certified dealeren-US -en-US ships and NEVER vary from the specific en-US car you selected or price quoted by TrueCar, en-US Costco, or Consumer Reports. NEVER pay en-US any additional fees unless they are GOVen-US -en-US ERNMENT fees for sales tax and the license en-US plate. en-US 2. Ignore all car dealer and car manufacen-US -en-US turer advertisements.Almost without en-US exception, its impossible to buy or lease a en-US new car for the advertised price. Either its en-US simply untrue or theres something hidden en-US (usually in the fine print) that makes the car en-US much more expensive than advertised. Do en-US your own research online.TrueCar.en-US com,Edmunds.com, andKbb.com(Kelly en-US Blue Book) are accurate sources of informaen-US -en-US tion for fair selling prices.en-US 3. Always get three bids for your en-US trade-in.Car dealers love to buy cars en-US directly from owners for their used car lots. en-US Their vernacular is over-the-curb. Shop en-US the value of your trade-in with three car en-US dealers of the same make as your trade-in. en-US Make an appointment with the used car en-US manager and tell him you dont want to buy en-US another car. Explain that youre down-sizen-US -en-US ing and just want to sell your car. Be sure en-US that he knows that youre getting two more en-US bids from two other dealers. If youre near a en-US CarMax, thats a good place to get a bid.en-US 4. Check with your bank and/or credit en-US union.Youll get a better interest rate and en-US terms than the dealer will likely give you. en-US The exception is with manufacturer offered en-US interest rates, but you often must forego a en-US cash rebate for this. Your best bet may be to en-US take the manufacturers cash rebate with a en-US slightly higher interest rate from your bank en-US or credit union.en-US 5. Always compare out-the-door en-US prices.Youll NEVER get an out-the-door en-US price from a car dealer unless you demand en-US it and then you still might not get it. An en-US out-the-door price is the amount you can en-US hand the dealer a check for and drive the en-US car out-the-door to your home with. en-US Every other price you see advertised or en-US quoted is plus a lot more money. Usually en-US you never see the true out-the-door price en-US until youre in the business office aka F&I en-US and the box signing stacks of papers spit en-US out by the computer. Typical hidden en-US additions to the price you think you can en-US buy the car for are dealer fees by many en-US different names like tag agency fee, en-US electronic filing fee, dealer services fee, doc en-US fee, notary and closing fee, administrative en-US feeand the beat goes on. Names for en-US aliases for dealer fees are limited only by the en-US dealers imagination. I recently mystery en-US shopped a car dealer who claimed he had en-US no dealer fee, but he had an electronic en-US filing fee and tag agency feesboth phony en-US fees that are pure profit to the dealer. But en-US wait, theres moreDEALER INSTALLED en-US ACCESSORIES. Most car dealers add these en-US to the price en-US you pay. en-US Some en-US examples en-US are en-US nitrogen in en-US the tires, en-US plastic pin en-US stripes, en-US protection en-US packages en-US including en-US paint en-US sealant, en-US roadside en-US assistance, en-US etc, en-US window en-US tint, and en-US anything en-US else the dealer can buy cheap and overen-US -en-US charge you for.en-US 6. Consult Consumers Report before you en-US choose the new car you will buy.Consumer en-US Reports in the most reliable source of en-US information you can access in choosing en-US your next car. Their annual auto issue is en-US pricelessalways have in in your library. en-US You dont have to buy the safest, most fuel en-US efficient, lowest maintenance and repair car en-US with the highest resale value, but at least en-US you will know which cars they are. Then en-US you can choose the one you want.en-US 7. Deal strictly online with car dealers, en-US anonymously.Theres no good reason to en-US visit a dealership and talk to a car salesman en-US other than to test-drive the car youve en-US selected and to pick it up after youve en-US bought it. Dealing online you wont be en-US hounded by phone calls from a hoard of car en-US salesmen (dont give them your number or en-US give them a phony one). Create a new, free en-US address from Google or Microsoft. All en-US dealers have Internet departments now. en-US Those sales people are authorized to quote en-USlower prices than the regular floor en-US salesmen. Dealer will always give you a en-US lower written price online than they will en-US quote you face-to-face because they know, if en-US its too high, they may never hear from you en-US again.en-US 8. Never drive the new car home until en-US you know your credit has been en-US approved. You will be cajoled to drive the en-US car home as soon as you sign the papers. en-US The salesman has two reasons. (1) You will en-US fall in love with the car, brag to all you en-US neighbor about the good deal you got, and en-US your family will fall in love with it too. Even en-US in you find some surprises in the reams of en-US paperwork you brought home, youre en-US unlikely to return the puppy to the pet en-US store. Thats why they call this practice en-US puppy-dogging. (2) Often dealers send en-US credit applications to multiple banks for en-US approval (called shot-gunning). If you have en-US marginal credit, youre likely to get an en-US approval with exceptions. These usually en-US entail higher interest, more down payment, en-US and shorter terms. I en-US sat down and read it. I want to extend my en-US appreciation to Donald Rodrigue for his en-US article on charter school issue, the election, en-US and for offering the board vacancies. Well en-US written.en-USOne-eyed drivingen-USWell, there is one thing that drunk drivers en-US do that texting drivers don't bother to do. en-US They keep at least one eye on the road at all en-US times.en-USGratefulen-USWhile in a convenience store on Septemen-US -en-US ber first, I was trying to operate a coffee en-US machine and my old cane kept slipping and en-US landing on the floor. A kind gentleman with en-US a big smile picked it up for me. I explained en-US that the troublesome cane once had a wrist en-US band that had long since worn off and I en-US hadn't found a lasting solution. "Well, I en-US won't be needing mine, soon. Why don't I en-US bring it in from my car and trade for yours?"en-US Before I could get over my surprise, he en-US returned with a brand-new cane with a en-US well-padded handle and a very sturdy wrist en-US band. This is the sort of kindness we need to en-US pass on. Whether it's a smile where you see a en-US frown, a helping hand, or the kind of activen-US -en-US ism that makes this world a better place, en-US we'll all be better off for the effort.en-US Thank you, kind sir. I've already paid it en-US forward.en-USEnforce littering lawsen-USThe trash and cigarette butts being left on en-US our beaches and roadways is really unbearen-US -en-US able. There are laws on the books regarding en-US littering, I wish they were enforced. I think en-US some of our tax money would be well spent en-US on some police and beach safety personnel en-US whose job is, while not completely specific en-US to, focused on littering.en-US It is all too common to see a smoker casuen-US -en-US ally toss a butt on the ground or stick it in en-US the sand on the beach. Ugggh. You only en-US need to have a roving beach patrol stop en-US when they see someone smoking on the en-US beach. The clouds of smoke are easy to spot. en-US When the person is done with their cigaen-US-en-US rette, usually in a minute or so, observe what en-US they do with the butt. If it goes in an ashtray en-US or empty bottle or pocket, great! If it goes on en-US the beach, issue a ticket.en-US The revenue collected from this would en-US more than pay the wages of police and beach en-US safety and keep the beaches and roadways en-US cleaner. Could be a win, win, no?en-USCat owners called outen-USI am an animal lover and would never en-US hurt any. My fondness is for dogs and wonen-US -en-US der why cats do not have the same rules, en-US such as staying on their owner's property, en-US walking on a leash, etc. It is not in the anien-US-en-US mal's best interest to be roaming at any time en-US but especially at night. If you do not want en-US the cat in your house why do you have one?en-US I am tired of cats urinating on my house en-US especially the front door, chasing and killing en-US small animals such as birds, doves, squirrels, en-US lizards, etc. I love watching small animals, en-US all in my back yard, and my dog has never en-US chased any of them because they are not en-US never out there at the same time.en-US So, please cat owners think of all the other en-US small animals that want to live and have fun en-US in a yard.en-USNo left turnen-USTwice today I witnessed vehicles coming en-US out of the plaza on the NE corner of Monteen-US -en-US rey and US #1 onto Monterey going West en-US and causing obstructions to the flow of trafen-US-en-US fic. The first vehicle was an A/C van that en-US blocked the traffic until everyone stopped to en-US let him make the illegal left hand turn. The en-US second vehicle (which surprised me very en-US much) was a Martin County Sheriff vehicle en-US who also impeded the flow of traffic just to en-US enable him to make an illegal left hand turn en-US and get into the lane he needed so that he en-US could return to the Sheriff's department en-US further west on Monterey (there was no en-US urgency, no flashing lights, just didn't want en-US to go to the proper exit and make the proper en-US turn to return to the Sheriff's department).en-US Because of this plaza having traffic turnen-US-en-US ing from US #1 onto Monterey going East, en-US the sign at the exit near Pei Wei says "NO en-US LEFT TURN" so as to not impede the flow en-US of traffic turning from Monterey to US #1 or en-US the traffic turning onto Monterey from US en-US #1 and maybe causing an accident.en-US I am so appalled by inconsideration of en-US first the A/C van and then to have the Sheren-US -en-US iff's Department do the same illegal turn, en-US setting an example of disobeying the law. en-US This is why our young people of today have en-US no respect for authority. Why should they, en-US when the authority who should be setting en-US the example, ignores the law.en-USFighting robo callsen-USIn response to the reader who is being en-US bombarded with robo calls. In short why are you en-US answering the phone? The call back method en-US is very effective. Caller ID is helpful as it en-US identifies friends, important vendors/cusen-US-en-US tomers and relatives. As for calls you dont en-US recognize simply let them go to voicemail. en-US A phone with call memory will allow recall en-US of unknown numbers. When I call back a en-US solicitation usually the following occurs: 1. en-US the line is dead (no answer); 2. the marketen-US -en-US ing company announcement answers your en-US call and asks if you wish to be removed from en-US their call list (very handy); 3. a live person en-US answers but this is rare and they do not usuen-US -en-US ally get call backs and are off script. At my en-US business we keep a call log on a spreadsheet en-US and this is a great way to ID repeat solicitaen-US -en-US tions (offenders). en-US 7 en-USpracticing law, Mr. Bakkedahl said. It was en-US quite an honor and I was very humbled.en-US A 1984 graduate of Martin County High en-US School, the prosecutor said he initially en-US wanted a career in law enforcement but en-US credits one of his professors at Florida State en-US University with directing the political scien-US -en-US ence major toward the courtroom. Mr. en-US Bakkedahl received his undergraduate en-US degree Magna Cum Laude in 1988 and his en-US FSU law degree three years later.en-US I had a FSU professor who encouraged en-US me to pursue law because he though I would en-US be good at it, he explained. I still had an en-US interest after law school in law enforcement, en-US and the career most closely affiliated with en-US law enforcement would be a prosecutor.en-US Mr. Bakkedahl has earned the respect of en-US both presiding judges and defense attorneys en-US who have frequently sparred against him in en-US the courtroom over the years. He said he en-US gets an adrenaline rush during the closing en-US arguments of any trial, a fact confirmed by en-US Circuit Judge Robert E. Belanger who spent en-US 10 years working side-by-side as an assistant en-US state prosecuting attorney with the en-US award-winner before taking the bench 14 en-US years ago.en-US Tom does everything related to litigation en-US at a very high level, he said. His trial prepaen-US -en-US ration is incredibly thorough with assiduous en-US attention to detail. His courtroom skills and en-US presentation are in the top 5 percent of all en-US attorneys I have observed in 35 years of en-US practice.en-US Judge Belanger said he particularly envies en-US Mr. Bakkedahls courtroom demeanor, en-US which he said also stood out to another 19th en-US Judicial Circuit judge.en-US Judge John Fennellys nickname for Tom en-US was ThorGod of Thunder because of his en-US intensity and passion, especially during en-US closing arguments, he said. en-US Sewalls Point Attorney Bob Watson has en-US frequently witnessed those closing arguen-US -en-US ments in the courtroom and admits any en-US attorney facing the prosecutor must be fully en-US prepared to meet him head-on.en-US When I try a case with him, I know that I en-US am going up against a really hard worker, en-US he explained. Youre never going to win a en-US case against him unless you have all your en-US papers in order. Ive seen him win a case that en-US he never would have won if he hadnt en-US worked himself to death. en-US State Attorney Bruce Colton agrees with en-US that assessment, having worked with the en-US prosecutor since 1991 and occasionally en-US co-trying cases with him. en-US Tom is intelligent and hard working, en-US dedicated to ensuring that victims are repreen-US-en-US sented and that those who victimize others en-US are held accountable, he said. Tom has the en-US ability to connect with jurors and builds a en-US rapport with them from the start of jury en-US selection. He talks in terms that people can en-US understand, and his legal arguments are well en-US researched and concise.en-US Mr. Bakkedahl said he got the most satisen-US -en-US faction out of successfully prosecuting the en-US 2015 murder trial against Erise Tisdale, en-US charged with the killing of Sgt. Gary Morales en-US two years prior. He still recalls the pain of en-US his first loss, however, which came shortly en-US after he finished law school. en-US One of the very first trials I had as a en-US brand new prosecutor involved a theft from en-US JC Pennys, he explained. At the conclusion en-US of this misdemeanor trial, the jury acquitted en-US the defendant who had been caught en-USDesiree:en-USI know what en-US youre thinking en-US when you first see en-US me, with my bad en-US ear cut. en-US 8 en-USer admitted there had been a last minute en-US introduction of new evidence.en-US During the presentation before the en-US Board in April, the applicant, I believe, proen-US -en-US vided sufficient evidence that circumstances en-US had changed, she said. They pointed to the en-US future land use change of two of the parcels en-US to the west that had been changed from en-US rural density, the three properties [in the en-US current request] and Palm Bluff. The Board en-US of County Commissioners determined to en-US transmit the four parcels with the Limited en-US Commercial Future Land Use, and I believe en-US that the record, facts and circumstances en-US support a conclusion by the Board that thats en-US the most appropriate future land use.en-US Just as in 2015 when resisting the change en-US from Rural Density on the same land, Comen-US -en-US missioner Fielding still opposed any comen-US -en-US mercial zoning on the land due to stormwaen-US -en-US ter issues with nearby Danforth Creek. en-US That to me is a significant concern that en-US will be more intense the greater percentage en-US of utilization of the property with impermeen-US -en-US able, whether its parking or structure or en-US whatever, he said. That will change the en-US flow that will then go into that waterway, en-US which will eventually make its way into the en-US lagoon.en-US The Commission then heard a presentaen-US -en-US tion from Gunster law firm attorney Bob en-US Raines in representation of the landowners, en-US one of his firms land planners and Palm en-US City resident Jeff Williams, the senior vice en-US president of commercial development for en-US Conover South LLC, the contract purchaser en-US of the properties. The latter said as a Palm en-US City resident himself for several years, he en-US understood both the concerns and the needs en-US of the area and would personally oversee en-US any project developed on the land. en-US In my opinion as a developer and specifen-US -en-US ically as a resident, we have a need for comen-US -en-US petition in the grocery market -we dont en-US have that, he said. We have a need for en-US modernized convenience stores within en-US Palm City, and we have a need for approprien-US -en-US ate limited retail within Palm City. We have en-US a need for modern community developen-US -en-US ments that reflect the areas traditional roots, en-US appropriate size and scope, appropriate en-US locations and aesthetically pleasing builden-US -en-US ings.en-US Even more importantly than added conen-US -en-US venience for Palm City residents, he said en-US Limited Commercial Development of the en-US land would inject life into the local econoen-US -en-US my.en-US We want to bring local jobs, we want to en-US bring local business ownership, not just en-US small businesses owned, but we want local en-US businesses to have the opportunity to own en-US national franchises, franchisees that require en-US the owners to live in the community that en-US they operate in, Mr. Williams added. We en-US want businesses that are going to urge the en-US residents to stay in Palm City and to not en-US want to or have to travel to Stuart, Jensen en-US Beach or to Port St. Lucie if they want someen-US -en-US thing a little nicer, if they want something en-US different, if they want more variety.en-US The majority of public speakers following en-US his lengthy discourse rejected his reasoning, en-US such as real estate broker David Russotti, en-US who feared additional development on a en-US roadway with so many students going to en-US and from school could be hazardous.en-US I have three children that go to the Palm en-US City schools that are right there in the en-US school zone at the proposed site, he said. en-US Myself, as well as other residents who live en-US in the developments in the surrounding en-US area, are opposed to having the Limited en-US Commercial. We all agreed last time that it en-US would be best for our childrens safety to be en-US having a lighter business. And on top of en-US that, we put more businesses there, the peoen-US-en-US ple coming in and out of that plaza with the en-US schools right there and the kids walking and en-US on bikes, theyre not going to be looking out en-US for the best interests of our children.en-US Kelly Middleton lives directly across Maren-US -en-US tin Highway from the property in question en-US and has followed the process for the last few en-US years. She particularly found the Commisen-US -en-US sion majoritys last minute change of heart en-US distasteful and detailed a timeline of the en-US whole process.en-US This zoning change came before this en-US Board on April 24, and then the one comen-US -en-US missioner said why dont we vote it Limited en-US but only if the landowners provide us with en-US an acceptable PUD or site plan, and then if en-US its not acceptable, then the one commisen-US -en-US sioner assured the public he would vote for en-US COR, she said, alluding to Chairman Ed en-US Ciampi. Imagine my surprise when I called en-US Growth [Management] asking for the site en-US plan for todays vote to find out that -essenen-US -en-US tially behind our backs -the commissionen-US -en-US ers transmitted this zoning change to Tallaen-US-en-US hassee. I feel this was a slight of hand on the en-USpart of this Board, and Im beyond disapen-US -en-US pointed and I feel cheated by the people that en-US I voted for.en-US Immediately after the public speakers finen-US-en-US ished, Commissioner Sarah Heard asked en-US Ms. Szedlmayer to display the current future en-US land use map on the overhead screen so en-US everyone could see which surrounding en-US lands still had Rural Density zoning. en-US You can see theres a preponderance of en-US Rural Density in the area, plus some agriculen-US-en-US tural estate you can see from the area that en-US the uses are very, very much rural, almost en-US exclusively to the south, she said. Thats en-US why Limited Commercial is inappropriate en-US for this property, and thats why COR is en-US appropriate for this property. en-US She then made a motion to designate the en-US parcels in question as COR-1 as Mr. Raines en-US approached the lectern in order to refute her en-US reasoning.en-US Yeah, there is a lot of rural density out en-US there commissioner, he said. Guess what: en-US All of Palm City was Rural Density and en-US Agriculture 20 or 30 years ago. If you live in en-US Martin Downs, your property was rural en-US density or agriculture at one time. If you live en-US in Danforth, your property was agriculture en-US or rural density at one time. Its all changed, en-US thats the whole point, and some of those en-US other properties that youre looking to are en-US going to continue to change also as time en-US goes on.en-US Commissioner Heard emphasized she en-US had a duty to protect existing residents, and en-US Commissioner Fielding said he would secen-US -en-US ond her motion if she amended it to the en-US more restrictive COR zoning instead of en-US COR-1, which she did. en-US Actually were trying to preserve the en-US things that people moved to Palm City or en-US Martin County for, the latter said. en-US Chairman Ciampi admitted he was the en-US commissioner referred to by Ms. Middleton en-US and said he had to actually go back and en-US review the April 23 video to listen to his en-US own words again for clarity.en-US I was more interested in the look of how en-US the overall facility or the overall site would en-US develop, he said. I think that is what my en-US friends and neighbors in Palm City are en-US interested in. My personal belief on Martin en-US Highway and Palm City is that yes, landen-US en-USZoningen-USFrom page 1en-US Seeen-US en-US ZONINGen-US page 11

en-US 9 en-USOen-USne of the questions that I am asked en-US frequently has to do with the icons en-US on the typical Windows desktop. en-US Arent they slowing things down? I never en-US use most of them, cant we get rid of them? en-US I usually answer by explaining that most en-US of the icons on the average desktop are not en-US slowing the computer down at all but are en-US actually more like speed dial buttons on a en-US phone. Most desktop icons are just en-US shortcuts to programs buried deeper in the en-US system and are on the desktop so you dont en-US have to navigate through all sorts of menus en-US to launch a program.en-US If you look closely at the icons on your en-US desktop, you may notice that some icons en-US have a little arrow in a little white box at the en-US lower left corner of the icon. The arrow en-US itself is kind of curvy and will point to the en-US top right corner of the icon. You may also en-US notice that other icons (like the Computer en-US icon, the User folder icon, the Recycle Bin en-US Etc.) do not have the little arrow. There is a en-US big difference between the two types of en-US icons the icons with the little arrows are en-US actually just shortcuts and not the actual en-US program (or file). And shortcuts are really en-US really tiny and dont slow the computer en-US down at all!en-US But what about the icons that dont have en-US the little arrow? Are they safe to get rid of? en-US That question is a little harder to answer. en-US You see, any icon on your computer that en-US does not have the little shortcut indicator is en-US either a user file or a system file and en-US messing with it can cause problems. Icons en-US on your desktop that are not shortcuts are en-US either files that have been saved on the en-US desktop or system files that have been set en-US there by the operating system and care en-US should be taken when manipulating them.en-US Another point that I want to make is that en-US people have different ideas as to what the en-US phrase get rid of means! When someone en-US asks me to get rid of all of the unused icons en-US on their desktop what they are invariably en-US asking me to do is to delete them. Now if en-US you have been reading my column for any en-US length of time then you know how I feel en-US about deleting things from your computer en-US its not something I do casually! In fact I en-US have a saying if I were king Id have the en-US delete button stricken from the keyboard! en-US My idea of cleaning a Windows desktop by en-US getting rid of a bunch of stuff is not to en-US delete everything but leans more in line en-US with the phrase out of sight, out of mind. en-US People will watch with a puzzled look on en-US their face as I create yet another icon on en-US their desktop (a new folder), name it en-US something like Desktop Clutter and then en-US drag all of the unused icons into the new en-US folder. Then, once the desktop is down to en-US just the icons that actually get used, I drag en-US the Desktop Clutter folder and drop it into en-US the Users folder. en-US Then I usually spend the next few en-US minutes explaining why I went through all en-US that trouble rather than just deleting en-US everything. My explanation really boils en-US down to habit. One of the worst habits en-US people get into with their machines is the en-US habit of deleting stuff every time they tidy en-US up. Sure its great to have a tidy desktop but en-US if you are in the habit of casually deleting en-US stuff then eventually you are going to delete en-US something you actually need. Even worse is en-US the habit some people have of emptying the en-US recycle bin every time they delete someen-US -en-US thing. Thats just a disaster waiting to en-US happen.en-US My philosophy is out of sight, out of en-US mind. Tidying up my system by sweeping a en-US bunch of unused shortcuts (and actual files en-US for that matter) into a folder and then en-US moving the folder out of sight ensures that en-US if I accidentally do get rid of something en-US that I need, I can recover it easily enough en-US by digging into the folder where I moved it. en-US Does this mean that I am completely en-US against deleting everything? No, of course en-US not. Some things are trash and I have no en-US problem deleting them I just have a real en-US problem with the habit of deleting things en-US with barely a second thought. en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. en-US 11 en-USowners do have a right to develop their en-US property and make use of the property that en-US theyve invested in. However, that being en-US said, I do believe the community has a right en-US to have an input in the feel and look of what en-US the community will look like. And so thats en-US why I was willing at the time to offer up a en-US more higher and intense use of the property en-US if I could have some assurances.en-US Chairman Ciampi then made it clear he en-US would honor his words from the April meeten-US -en-US ing, paving the way for the rejection of Limen-US-en-US ited Commercial zoning on the land. en-US Both the representatives of the current en-US owners and Mr. Williams have said that I en-US dont have the ability to have flexible assuren-US -en-US ances of exactly what could happen on the en-US property, he said. And so for me, my ultien-US -en-US mate responsibility is to protect the look and en-US feel of the community. And balancing that en-US with giving people their opportunity to utien-US -en-US lize their property and make a profit on en-US their property, I will be supporting the en-US motion thats been made thus far, simply en-US because I dont have the assurance that there en-US is a vision that all of our neighbors can agree en-US upon.en-US Commissioner Harold Jenkins subseen-US -en-US quently agreed he would side with the chairen-US -en-US man on the vote, and Commissioner Doug en-US Smith -who cast the lone dissenting vote en-US -said it was time to address the countys en-US planned unit development process to better en-US suit development in such transitional areas.en-US We could have handled it in a much beten-US-en-US ter fashion if wed had a better PUD proen-US -en-US gram and we still dont have one sitting in en-US front of us, so everybodys kind of held in en-US limbo, he said. At the end of the day, if the en-US concern really is about what goes there, en-US what it looks like and how it behaves with en-US the address, our standard zoning is never en-US going to cover all those issues for everyen-US -en-US body. Zoning en-USFrom page 8en-USAen-USlmost everybody likes the fresh taste en-US of citrus, whether it be oranges, en-US grapefruits or tangerines. Someen-US -en-US times the sweetest most delicious fruit can en-US come from trees that you raised yourself in en-US your own backyard. Today, I am going to en-US talk about growing citrus in your backyard en-US and indoors!en-US The orange was introduced to our en-US wonderful state in 1565 by Spanish en-US explorers. Most of the fruit that is produced en-US in our state is not in south Florida but is in en-US central Florida in an area that we refer to as en-US growing Zone 9. The reason for this is that en-US in order for the fruit to get its sugar sweet en-US taste, the fruit must be subject to a period of en-US cool temperatures. While growers welcome en-US cool weather, freezing temperatures for en-US more than four hours can cause damage to en-US the fruit. en-US There are many varieties of citrus en-US available and it is mainly a selection of your en-US own personal choice that should determine en-US which flavor you should buy. Look for en-US healthy trees that have dark green foliage en-US and no signs of disease or insects. Once you en-US make your purchase, it is time to take your en-US prize home and have some fun.en-US Citrus like to be planted in areas that en-US have good drainage and a full day of sun. If en-US the area you have chosen for planting en-US floods during heavy rain, build up the en-US ground with some topsoil to keep the roots en-US as much above the water as possible. When en-US planting your tree use a good quality topsoil en-US and be sure you do not plant in an area that en-US will be affected by your sprinkler system. en-US Citrus trees do not like excess water and en-US this can also lead to dry fruit. Do not be en-US tempted to water your tree too often and en-US also remember to keep the area around the en-US tree clear of any grass or mulch. Any of en-US these circumstances can cause potentially en-US lethal fungus diseases to destroy your tree. en-US You should also keep weeds away from the en-US base of your trees to be sure proper en-US drainage is established. en-US Another critical ingredient for good en-US citrus growth is fertilizer. Choose a good en-US quality citrus food that has minor elements. en-US You also should apply a minor element en-US spray that contains such ingredients as iron, en-US boron and manganese. en-US One mistake that many citrus trees en-US owners make is try to prune their trees. The en-US truth is that citrus trees should never be en-US pruned. You should just let the trees shed en-US their branches naturally. Thunderstorm en-US winds and tropical systems will naturally en-US prune the tree as it sheds its branches. en-US For those of you that have limited yard en-US space or live in an apartment, you can en-US purchase dwarf citrus trees that you can en-US grow in a sunny window or on a balcony. en-US You can purchase these trees in Turnpike en-US gift shops, airport gift shops and at gift en-US shops in many of our tourist areas. You can en-US also buy them online. Once you bring your en-US plant home, plant it immediately so it does en-US not stay in the box for long. You should en-US initially plant it in about an 8-inch diameter en-US pot that has good drainage. Use a good en-US quality potting soil such as Miracle Gro. en-US Once your tree is well established in the en-US pot, you can transplant your tree to a 5 to en-US 25 gallon container. Remember, the larger en-US the container you use, the bigger the plant en-US will get. en-US Unlike citrus trees planted in the ground, en-US container trees will need frequent watering en-US and occasional pruning. When your tree is en-US young, if you prune a couple of inches off en-US the top, it will allow the tree to spread out en-US some instead of growing tall and skinny. Do en-US not allow the tree to sit in a saucer filled en-US with water. Be sure to drain the water from en-US your saucer if you use one. en-US If you have a balcony, you can put your en-US tree outside to get much needed sunlight. If en-US you keep it indoors, choose a location near en-US a sunny window. en-US The fruit that is produced from these en-US small trees will be small and usually is not en-US as sweet as its larger counterparts but the en-US fruit is great in jellies and also for adding en-US flavor to drinks.en-US Joe Zelenak can be reached aten-US hometownen-US -en-US garden@gmail.com en-US or visit his website en-US www.en-US hometowngarden.com.en-USGrowing citrus trees indoors GARDEN NOOK en-USJOE ZELENAK

en-US 16 Just For Kids Summer Camps 2018 Advertise it in Hometown News! Reserve your space today! Have A Summer Camp? Call 1-800-823-0466 en-USNen-USational Doughnut Week is a great en-US holiday because everyone loves en-US doughnuts.en-US But where did they come from? Who en-US invented them? Who cares? Theyre here, en-US lets eat doughnuts every day! en-US OK, OK, enough celebrating. Its time to en-US talk doughnuts. They have been around for en-US hundreds of years. Every culture has fried en-US some kind of dough throughout the en-US centuries, but no one knows where they en-US started. en-US What we do know is the Dutch in the en-US mid-19th century were frying dough balls en-US in pork fat called olykoeks, or oily cakes. en-US The center of the dough would not cook all en-US the way through, so they started stuffing the en-US cake with fruits, nuts and other fillings that en-US did not require cooking. The Dutch brought en-US the oily cake to North America and many en-US cultures made their own variations.en-US In1847, a sea captain named Gregory en-US Hansen decided to poke holes in the doughen-US-en-US nut to get rid of the uncooked center by en-US putting them in the spoke of the ships en-US steering wheel. He would have a treat near en-US him during the long hours of sailing. The en-US story was published in a Boston newspaper. en-US In the early 1900s, doughnuts were en-US time-consuming to produce because each en-US one was made by hand. But that would en-US change in 1924 when a Russian immigrant en-US developed a machine to make doughnuts. en-US The machine was featured at the 1934 en-US Chicago Worlds Fair and doughnuts en-US became extremely popular. The tasty treat en-US even endured a name change from doughen-US -en-US nut to donut. en-US In 1937, Vernon Rudolf brought a yeast en-US raised donut recipe from a New Orleans en-US chef and Krispy Kreme was born. The first en-US store was built in Winston-Salem, N.C. en-US Today they have grown to more than 1,000 en-US stores worldwide. en-US The first Dunkin Donuts opened in en-US Quincey, Mass., in 1950 and eventually en-US surpassed Krispy Kreme stores, opening en-US 10,585 worldwide. en-US Yes, we love our donuts and fried dough. en-US Just visit your local fairs and see what en-US everyone is eating. Its not just fried dough, en-US but fried pickles, cookies, candy bars, ice en-US cream, bananas and fruit. en-US If you want to make your own donuts or en-US fry something special, it might be easier en-US than you think. If you have a small fryer, en-US that is great. If not, use a heavy bottomed en-US pot, 3-4 quarts. Fill half way with canola, en-US soybean or peanut oil whichever you en-US like. Buy a good quality pancake mix. Try en-US Sams commercial brand and follow en-US instructions for pancakes. Just add a little en-US less water to make it thicker, not too watery. en-US If you like fried frozen bananas, peel the en-US bananas, freeze, then dip in pancake batter en-US and place in hot oil. Temperature should be en-US 350 degrees; it will float, so use a slotted en-US spoon and keep turning until golden brown en-US then remove. You can fry pickles, candy bar, en-US and Twinkies; just dip and fry. en-US My wife came up with a great idea; use a en-US small wooden skewer and place 3-4 en-US strawberries or blueberries on it, dip and en-US fry. You will be surprised how good they en-US taste. en-US You can make your own funnel cake. en-US Place batter in a plastic squeeze bottle and en-US pour in circles in the fryer. Frying is a little en-US bit of work, but worth the efforts. If youre en-US afraid of frying, just go out and buy your en-US favorite dessert. At least now you know how en-US its done. en-US 19 en-USWen-USe all have our favorite bunch to en-US play golf with. Maybe its just en-US your best friend or spouse. en-US Maybe its your three best buddies, or en-US maybe its a bunch of friends. For the en-US Wednesday Warriors Golf Group of en-US Brevard County, its a group of 15 or so, that en-US has room for more.en-US The group began in 2008 when a group en-US from north and another from south en-US Brevard County got together. The two en-US groups had such fun playing together that en-US they decided it would be a great idea to play en-US together more often. Wednesday being in en-US the middle of the week proved to be a great en-US way to break up the week for this bunch of en-US mostly retired golfers.en-US The name Wednesday Warriors came en-US about when the group from south Brevard en-US played in a tournament. They had to give en-US their group a name, and Wednesday en-US Warriors was chosen by the group and they en-US decided to keep it.en-US We are open to men and women aged 19 en-US and up, said member coordinator Domien-US -en-US nick Leone. The majority of our members en-US are veterans from all service branches, and en-US we currently four couples.en-US While the group is headquartered in en-US Brevard, there is no requirement that you en-US live there to be a member. In fact, the group en-US is a traveling bunch that plays as often en-US outside of Brevard County as it does in.en-US The week that I spoke to Dominick, the en-US group was heading to Orlando for the day. en-US The group car-pools to places out-of-town. en-US They do not stay overnight, preferring to be en-US out and back on the same day. Most travel is en-US no more than an hour or so drive from en-US Brevard. en-US The Warriors play every Wednesday, all en-US year round. Granted some members are en-US seasonal, but the group really wants en-US members to play each week as much as en-US possible. The bigger numbers allow en-US Dominick to get better greens fees for en-US everyone. en-US Tee times vary from week to week, but in en-US most cases are in the morning. There are en-US occasions where the group will move the en-US day it plays to accommodate holidays, en-US changes in playing conditions or to take en-US advantage of special pricing at a course. en-US Players may play any game they wish en-US between themselves. The group, as a whole, en-US does not have any monetary challenges. en-US Some players like to play for skins or a en-US Nassau or even a cold beverage. Thats en-US entirely up to those players. en-US The group plays by USGA Rules, but en-US allows some latitude. Members are also en-US given an unofficial handicap and an average en-US score, allowing everyone to see how they en-US perform against one another. en-US Pairings are made by the coordinator and en-US players are usually switched around a bit to en-US encourage everyone to meet and get to en-US know one another. Remember, the groups en-US main objective is fun and camaraderie. en-US Current members may bring a guest up en-US to two times without having them join the en-US group. A guest is anyone who is a friend, en-US acquaintance or local relative. Non-local en-US relatives may play up to four times per year.en-US Being made up mostly of retired military en-US service members, there is a bit of service en-US branch pride among the members. With en-US this in mind, the group holds an Annual All en-US Service/Civilian Challenge. Members of en-US each of the military service branches are en-US teamed against the other branches. The en-US current champion is the U.S. Army. My late en-US father would be happy. en-US In addition to the challenge, the group en-US also holds other events and socials throughen-US -en-US out the year. Many involve the member and en-US their non-playing partner. en-US If you live in, close to, or dont mind en-US driving to Brevard, you should consider en-US joining the Wednesday Warriors Golf en-US Group. Initial administrative membership is en-US just $25 and covers your membership for en-US the first five years with the group. After en-US that, its a $5 renewal fee every year, en-US beginning in year six. en-US The group would love to welcome more GOLF en-USJAMES STAMMER en-USBrevard group enjoys olfing togetheren-GBmiles.
