According to campaign finance en-US reports, Mr. Norton raised $50,880 while Comen-US -en-US missioner Heard only raised $39,990, perhaps en-USStuart and Martin en-US County primary results en-USNew en-US charter en-US school en-US contract en-US approved en-USSTUART In the culmination of en-US what have become sometimes contenen-US-en-US tious discussions, the Martin County en-US School Board officially approved the en-US contract Aug. 21 enabling the Treasure en-US Coast Classical Academy to begin operen-US -en-US ations next August. en-US Board members approved the schools en-US charter application last April in a 4-1 en-US vote, with Board Member Tina McSoley en-US dissenting on both that vote and the en-US contract vote. During the April meeting, en-US more than 20 residents spoke out both en-US for and against allowing the academy to en-US open in the county, with the latter fearen-US -en-US ing the TCCA would siphon too money en-US away from public education. Many of en-US those same opposing speakers crowded en-US the lectern on June 18 to beg the Board en-US to reconsider even though the matter en-US was not planned for discussion that eveen-US -en-US ning. en-US Deputy School Superintendent Ginen-US-en-US ger Featherstone explained during the en-US recent meeting that both School Board en-US attorney Anthony George and TCCA en-US attorneys had worked for the last several en-US weeks to reach a consensus on the conen-US -en-US tract. en-US 2 en-USdue to the fact the latter only officially threw en-US her hat in the ring right before the deadline. en-US Her victory proved the loyalty of a slow-en-US growth constituent base to be stronger than en-US the lingering legal cloud over her head from en-US her arrest early this year on an alleged violaen-US -en-US tion of public records laws related to a Lake en-US Point LLC lawsuit. The county settled out of en-US court for $12 million, but Commissioner en-US Heards day in court is set for Dec. 10. If en-US convicted of a knowing violation of public en-US records law -a first-degree misdemeanor -en-US she could be removed from office. en-US Also on the county stage, the incumbent en-US candidate for the District 3 Martin County en-US School Board seat, Rebecca Negron, lost in en-US the primary to Hobe Sound challenger and en-US retired educator Victoria Defenthaler, who en-US won 21,517 of the 38,183 votes cast -or 56 en-US percent of the total -over Ms. Negrons en-US 16,666 votes. The latter, a fiscal conservative en-US on the Board since 2012, had frequently en-US criticized the Districts spending habits and en-US faced a barrage of attack ads during the en-US campaign. Official finance reports show Ms. en-US Defenthaler raised more campaign funds, en-US $45,286 to the $31,265 raised by Ms. en-US Negron. en-US In the City of Stuart, two incumbents up en-US for re-election on the City Commission, en-US Group 1 City Commissioner Nick Blount en-US and Group III Commissioner Troy McDonen-US-en-US ald, both found themselves routed by chalen-US -en-US lengers in what seemed to be the voters en-US choice of younger and fresher blood. Mr. en-US Blount, 68, who his fellow commissioners en-US appointed last April to replace his predecesen-US -en-US sor Tom Campenni, who resigned amid en-US accusations of age discrimination, lost by a en-US slim margin of 49.6 percent of the total en-US 3,494 votes cast. The victor, Mike Meier, 31, en-US won 50. 4 percent -or 1,761 of the votes -en-US to Mr. Blounts 1,733 votes.en-US Challenger Merritt Matheson, 35, more en-US handily won the race for the Group III seat, en-US winning 55 percent of the 3,522 votes cast to en-US the 44 percent, or 1,561 votes, won by Mr. en-US McDonald, 50. en-US On the state level, District 83 Rep. Gayle en-US Harrell claimed a significant victory in her en-US bid for the last two years of retiring Sen. Joe en-US Negrons District 25 seat over challenger en-US Belinda Keiser, winning 57 percent of the en-US 23,240 votes cast in the Republican primary. en-US Campaign records show Ms. Keiser spent en-US more than $500,000 to earn 9,897 votes to en-US the 13,343 cast for Rep. Harrell, who spent en-US about $232,000. Ms. Harrell carried more en-US name recognition in the battle, along with en-US the endorsement of Senate President Ken en-US Pruitt and Sen. Negron himself. For her en-US part, Ms. Keiser had the backing of the Floren-US -en-US ida Chamber of Commerce, Floridas Police en-US Benevolent Association and the National en-US Rifle Association. Rep. Harrell will now face en-US Democratic opponent and Stuart physician en-US Dr. Rob Levy in the general election this fall. en-US For the District 83 seat Ms. Harrell is en-US vacating, Palm City environmental engineer en-US and businessman Toby Overdorf won over en-US Port St. Lucie victims right advocate and en-US small business owner Sasha Dadan, with 57 en-US percent of the 9,668 votes cast to Ms. en-US Dadans 42 percent. Mr. Overdorf will go up en-US against Jensen Beach teacher and Demoen-US -en-US cratic candidate Matt Theobald for the seat en-US in the general election this November.en-US In the race for circuit judge seat of the en-US 19th Judicial Circuit Group, nonpartisan en-US candidates Robert Bob Meadows and Niren-US -en-US laine Smartt will now advance to the Nov. 6 en-US general election, having won 36.8 and 29.6 en-US percent, respectively, of the 33,481 votes cast en-US for the seat, which also included candidate en-US Louis Larsen who won 33 percent of the en-US vote in Martin. Though Mr. Larsen captured en-US more of the vote in Martin County, he failed en-US to beat Ms. Smartt regionally.en-US In this primarys Democratic race for the en-US District 18 seat of the U.S. House of Repreen-US -en-US sentatives, Palm Beach Gardens attorney en-US Lauren Baer had a landslide victory over en-US former U.S. Navy JAG officer and corporate en-US attorney Pam Keith, also of Palm Beach en-US Gardens, with 64.3 percent of the 10,663 en-US votes cast to Ms. Keiths 35.6 percent. Ms. en-US Baer will now face the winner of the Repuben-US -en-US lic primary for the same seat, incumbent en-US Rep. Brian Mast, who won 80 percent of the en-US 24,555 votes cast against two challengers. en-US The other 20 percent was divided between en-US Stuart resident Mark Freeman, who won en-US 2,492 votes to the 2,387 cast for Dave Cumen-US -en-US mings of Port St. Lucie. en-US Martin County voters also decided on en-US two referendums during this years primary, en-US one for a proposed 0.5 millage property tax en-US increase requested by the Martin County en-US School Board to use for aging infrastructure en-US replacement and the other on whether Hobe en-US Sound should be allowed to incorporate. en-US The first referendum passed, with 55 peren-US -en-US cent of voters voting yes to the millage en-US increase and slightly more than 44 percent en-US of voters saying no to the increase.en-US Voters resoundingly defeated the Hobe en-US Sound Incorporation request, with 89 peren-US -en-US cent of the total 3,967 votes cast in opposien-US -en-US tion. en-US 3 en-USSTUART For nearly two decades, Floor en-US Specialists of Martin County has satisfied en-US area residents with its top-of-the-line flooren-US -en-US ing selection and professional installation en-US services. en-US Customer satisfaction has always been the en-US goal of owner Jerry Pittman, who took over en-US the business in 2003 from a former business en-US partner whod launched the store in 2000 as en-US one of the first businesses to locate in the en-US then-new Willoughby Business Park. Thats en-US probably the main reason Floor Specialists en-US has earned the coveted Super Service Award en-US from Angies List for four years in a row en-US beginning in 2014. en-US With well over $10 million of sales out of en-US this location, Floor Specialists never leaves a en-US job without 100 percent customer satisfacen-US-en-US tion, he said. en-US Mr. Pittman believes one thing that difen-US -en-US ferentiates Floor Specialists of Martin en-US County from the discount flooring stores or en-US the big-box retailers is his use of itemized en-US contracts detailing every single charge on en-US any job -no matter what the size -down to en-US the glue or underlayment. Any additional en-US labor charges are also itemized, from toilet en-US removal and replacement to dumpster or en-US dump fees with every line item explained. en-US We give the customer the correct name en-US of the product theyre getting, the manufacen-US -en-US turer, color and style, he emphasized. We en-US dont private label, which is done to keep en-US customers from comparing prices on like en-US products. If its from our showroom, itll be en-US hard to find a lower price anywhere. Floor en-US Specialists vendors have been carefully en-US selected, and most are long time suppliers en-US and carry large inventories for quick deliven-US-en-US ery.en-US No stranger to the flooring industry, Mr. en-US Pittman got his start in Palm Beach County en-US in 1981 when he opened Karpet Kingdom in en-US Lake Park, followed by a second location in en-US Boca Raton a few years later. After about 10 en-US years, he sold that business and started en-US Statewide Carpets with a partner. An unreen-US -en-US lated injury caused him to take a years saben-US -en-US batical, which led to selling that business to en-US the partner. When he was ready to get back en-US to work, the non-compete clause and an en-US invitation from a former business partner en-US looking for help led him to Stuart, and the en-US rest is history. Hes seen the local flooring en-US business transition full circle since his arriven-US -en-US al and the subsequent economic recession.en-US When I came here, our business was 95 en-US percent hardwoods and service, he said. en-US Tile, laminate, vinyl and cork were added en-US during the lean years of the recession in en-US order to diversify. Now that the economy en-US has improved, our hardwood customers are en-US returning and we no longer sell tile. In fact, en-US we have removed more tile in the last severen-US -en-US al years utilizing our dustless floor service en-US than we ever sold.en-US Today Floor Specialists maintains nearly a en-US thousand samples to choose from in their en-US nopressure showroom, which provides a en-US relaxing shopping experience where cusen-US-en-US tomers are encouraged to take samples en-US home. Brand names such as Armstrong, en-US Bella Cera, Mirage, Somerset and others are en-US on display. The store can now custom order en-US hand-oiled elegant wood flooring in both en-US wide plank with long lengths from one of en-US the most exclusive manufacturers in the en-US industry. en-US We have several oil-finished floors, en-US including the designers choice DuChateau, en-US as well as The French Connection from en-US Garrison and the Montage Collection from en-US Horizon, Mr. Pittman added. I en-US understand FPLs need to maintain their en-US lines, but am I the only one that sees how all en-US the trees are being destroyed? en-US I have had more than one experience with en-US Asplundh and FPL. They do not just trim en-US the trees. They come in and either cut the en-US middle of the tree or they cut the complete en-US side off the tree. They just trimmed my fifth en-US oak tree. I now have a one-sided Oak tree. en-US The other four they took down completely. en-US How sad that is something that has taken so en-US long to grow now has been butchered. Figen-US-en-US ure another way to solve your problem en-US before we have no shade. en-US I will say that FPL did compensate me for en-US the three small trees that were on my propen-US -en-US erty, not on an easement. I would rather en-US have had the trees to provide the shade so en-US my air-conditioner doesnt have to run all en-US the time.en-USToo big to succeeden-USSome political candidates are sending me en-US a mailing each week. This is really annoying en-US when one votes early. Also, the postcards are en-US gigantic. I guess it is to match their egos.en-USSpace Forceen-US en-US It is not a joke but President Trump wants en-US to create a Space Force! They would be en-US responsible for protecting our satellites and en-US material interest we have in space. The creen-US -en-US ation of a Space Force would only result in en-US China and Russia entering in an arms race en-US in space. China and Russia have proposed en-US an international treaty to ban the placement en-US of weapons in space. However, the United en-US States has rejected this offer every time it en-US has been brought up. I would hope that the en-US United States would join China and Russia en-US in banning the placement of weapons in en-US space. However, that is not the action that en-US the United States wants to take at this time. en-US Therefore, I will present arguments for en-US the rejection of Space Force as an indepenen-US-en-US dent branch of the military. First off, the en-US military is not in favor of creating a Space en-US Force. Secretary of Defense James Mattis is en-US opposed to the idea as is the majority of the en-US military leadership.en-US Creating another branch of the military en-US would be very costly. The Space Force would en-US want what goes with each independent en-US branch of the military. For example, the en-US Space Force would want their own college en-US like each branch has now. In addition, by en-US creating another branch of the military, the en-US military bureaucracy would be increasing at en-US a time when efforts are being made to make en-US the military a slim, trim fighting machine.en-US I would suggest that the Space Force be en-US part of the Air Force like the Marines are en-US part of the Navy. The Air Force has been en-US dealing with the responsibility of space thus en-US far. The world would best be served by puten-US -en-US ting forth the effort of keeping weapons out en-US of space. Creating a Space Force would be en-US viewed as a military threat to all nations. Let en-US ALL NATIONS work towards keeping space en-US free of weapons of any kind!en-USGive bicyclists more roomen-USSince there are improvements going on en-US up and down U.S. 1, couldnt the bicycle en-US lanes be widened to maybe six feet?en-US The law states motor vehicles need to give en-US a bicycle three feet of clearance. The existing en-US bike lane is barely three feet wide in most en-US areas. This is not enough room when vehien-US -en-US cles are doing 45 mph (or more often much en-US faster). Factor in cell phone usage, navigaen-US-en-US tion devices and any other number of disen-US -en-US tractions, and it makes for a dangerous ride, en-US particularly with higher posted speed limits. en-US I know as a motorist, if I am traveling in en-US the right lane and I approach a bicyclist in en-US the bicycle lane, in order for me to give the en-US bicycle proper clearance, I need to be almost en-US in the left lane. In fact, unless there is a vehien-US-en-US cle next to me in the left lane, my wheels will en-US be on or over the white dividing lines to en-US safely pass a bicyclist.en-US As a frequent bicyclist on this road, I can en-US tell you some motorists will do the same. en-US Then there are the motorists who dont give en-US an inch. This is why the lanes need to be en-US widened where possible. The new trees are en-US nice, how about making it safer.en-US'There ought to be a law'en-USWhen did the individual right become en-US more important than the rights of the genen-US -en-US eral population? In particular, regarding en-US loud music emanating from a vehicle, or en-US anywhere for that matter. Our courts deciden-US-en-US ed its unconstitutional to have noise limits? en-US Its OK for an individual to play music in the en-US car as loud as they like because its their conen-US -en-US stitutional right?en-US What about my constitutional right to not en-US have to listen to your music? What about the en-US disturbing the peace law? What about the en-US siren from an emergency vehicle I cant hear en-US because of someones right to play their en-US music as loud as they want? What about the en-USmusic playing in my car that I can no longer en-US hear because some jerk thinks me and en-US everyone else wants to hear the trunk raten-US-en-US tling from the pounding bass coming from en-US their car?en-US This seems like another case of more en-US rights for the criminal, and to hell with the en-US victims. How about to hell with the judge en-US who ruled this way and fire him or her and en-US get someone with more common sense.en-USOpen letter to all motorcyclistsen-USPlease be aware that the striped zones en-US between or beside the handicapped parking en-US areas are not parking spaces. Please be en-US thankful for the few extra feet that you can en-US walk.en-US Many handicapped vehicles are equipped en-US with lifts, ramps or swing-out chairs that en-US require this extra space. Any obstacle to en-US either side of the vehicle could be dangerous en-US or impossible to navigate.en-US The only two options are to wait until the en-US obstruction leaves or move the vehicle into en-US traffic lanes to load/unload a wheelchair. In en-US case of bad weather, this increases danger.en-USRobo callsen-USCan anyone tell me how to stop the incesen-US-en-US sant phone calls from robo calls? My phone en-US rings all day long. en-US 8 uous updating of the latest trends and styles en-USand ongoing acquiring of product knowlen-US -en-US edge separates us from what you will find at en-US most other stores.en-US The company offers a variety of installaen-US -en-US tion methods making hardwood floors en-US available to homeowners who in the past en-US wouldnt have qualified due to an inferior en-US sub-floor, and its staff specializes in sanding en-US and staining techniques. en-US We offer our customers floating or glue-en-US down hardwood flooring systems so everyen-US -en-US one can have the beauty of hardwood, the en-US owner explained. We have stairs specialist en-US available and can install traditional harden-US-en-US wood flooring through nail down or staple en-US down methods with the same level of qualien-US -en-US ty craftsmanship.en-US Floor Specialists is not just limited to en-US hardwoods, either. Youll also find the best en-US names in laminate flooring, including en-US Mohawk, Quick Step, Krono, Armstrong en-US and many others. These are offered in hunen-US-en-US dreds of wood species and colors to choose en-US from, such as Acacia, Brazilian Cherry, en-US Hickory, Maple, Oak, Pine and Walnut. en-US Jeff Bowers of the Stuart-based Masteren-US -en-US piece Design/Build contracting firm chose en-US laminate from Floor Specialists of Martin en-US County for a home he and his wife puren-US -en-US chased recently in North River Shores. en-US He provided and installed a floor he en-US thought would meet our needs of the wear en-US and tear we would put on it, he said. It is a en-US new type of laminate floor that is very dog en-US friendly and moisture resistant. We have a en-US pool that we use a lot and it made sense to en-US us. His installation crew did an outstanding en-US job -quick, neat, clean and polite. We are en-US thrilled with what he did for us.en-US For homeowners who crave the genuine en-US look of wood or stone flooring but find en-US those materials far from their grasp, the en-US store carries an extensive line of luxury vinyl en-US tile, which is a completely different category en-US from vinyl sheet goods or laminate. Luxury en-US vinyl plank has a very durable core layer that en-US is waterproof. Floor Specialists has made a name for en-US itself in the category, giving LVT its own en-US showplace with samples installed on the en-US showroom floor.en-US And last, but not least, Floor Specialists en-US also offers more than a dozen varieties of en-US cork flooring in a plethora of colors. Visitors en-US to the showroom can get answers to their en-US technical questions and inquire about a en-US range of other services offered, such as en-US sanding and refinishing, sandless refinishen-US-en-US ing, dustless floor removal, cleaning services en-US and one that Mr. Pittman says is a rarity in en-US the industry: service long after the sale.en-US Repairs are often the reason our customen-US -en-US ers call us because they are not offered by en-US the original point of sale, he emphasized. en-US So many of the other stores, no matter how en-US much you buy from them, you call them en-US back two years later and they will tell you en-US they dont do repairs. We take care of our en-US customers no matter what the problems are. en-US We might charge you, but well still go fix it.en-US Mr. Bowers said his own firm has conen-US -en-US tracted with Floor Specialists of Martin en-US County to install the flooring on more than en-US a dozen of his custom homes, and the qualien-US -en-US ty of the work led him to choose Mr. Pitten-US -en-US mans team for his own home.en-US We are so pleased with what he did for us en-US in our own home, he added. It makes me en-US very happy to know that he gives all of our en-US Masterpiece Builders clients that same kind en-US of personal attention.en-US Mr. Pittman credits his longevity in the en-US industry to his fascination overseeing the en-US remodeling process.en-US I guess I just enjoy my work, he said. en-US Its different every day and I meet the nicest en-US people and we see a house transform right en-US in front of us. I was learning the business and en-US had been studying the invoices on new en-US Pontiacs that General Motors sent us when en-US they shipped a new car that we had ordered. en-US We had to pay the invoice immediately en-US when it was issued, sometimes even before en-US the car arrived at our dealership. In most en-US cases, it was our bank or GMAC who paid en-US GM and we borrowed the money from them to pay for the car. / en-USMy fathers answer to my question about en-US holdback was that it was an increase in the en-US amount of the invoice that we paid General en-US Motors which was not really part of the en-US price of the car. It was just an extra amount en-US added to the real price of the car and en-US included in the invoice. At that time, it was en-US 2% of the MSRP (manufacturers suggested en-US retail), so if a new Pontiac Bonneville had en-US an MSRP of $10,000 and a true cost of en-US $9,000, the factory invoice would be $9,200. en-US I asked my father, When do we get the en-US $200 back? He said, At the end of the en-US year. I asked him if they paid us interest on en-US our money and I can remember him en-US laughing loudly and saying no.en-US Of course my next question was why they en-US do that. He told me that the reason they en-US gave him was to help dealers sell their cars en-US for more money so that they didnt go en-US broke. He said that because they didnt get en-US their holdback money for such a long en-US period of time, they began to think of their en-US invoice as being the actual cost of the car. en-US General Motors felt that many dealers were en-US such poor businessmen that they might sell en-US their cars so cheaply that they would go out en-US of business. Now, because GM was kind en-US enough to hold back hundreds of thouen-US -en-US sands of dollars of the dealers money (and en-US pay them no interest on it) but return the en-US money to them once a year, they could help en-US the dealers make a bigger profit and en-US maintain adequate working capital.en-US At that time, I thought this was the en-US biggest bunch of boloney I had ever heard en-US and I was sure that this was a scheme by the en-US manufacturers to keep a free float of en-US millions of dollars of their dealers money en-US under the guise of helping the dealers. I en-US asked my father why the dealers didnt en-US strongly object to this and he said that most en-US dealers actually liked the idea of holden-US -en-US back. When I heard that, I thought that en-US maybe GM and the manufacturers were en-US right about the dealers not being smart en-US enough to sell their cars for a reasonable en-US profit.en-US It took me a few more years in the en-US business before I understood what was en-US really going on with holdback. It was a no en-US brainer as to why the manufacturers liked en-US it, but at last I understood its attraction to en-US us dealers. Because we had to pay an extra en-US amount over the true price of the car and en-US not see that money for up to a year, we en-US began to think of the invoice as the true en-US price, even though it was inflated by en-US hundreds of dollars. Because all manufacen-US -en-US turers added holdback to all dealers en-US invoices, the net effect was to raise the price en-US of all cars to all buyers by the amount of this en-US holdback. I know this is a dirty word, but en-US its price fixing on the grandest scale. This en-US might have been something that Henry en-US Ford, Alfred Sloan, and Walter Chrysler en-US concocted while playing golf at Bloomfield en-US Hills Country Club outside of Detroit.en-US Another neat thing about holdback for us en-US dealers is being able to tell our customers en-US that we are only charging them X dollars en-US over invoice; or we can tell them that we en-US will sell them this car at invoice with no en-US profit to us at all! (Theres a sucker born en-US every minute) Dealers often have invoice en-US sales with copies of the invoice pasted on en-US the car windows. Who doesnt believe that en-US an invoice is the cost of the car? The truth is en-US in the semantic skullduggery Mr. en-US Customer, I solemnly swear to you that this en-US is the exact price that I paid the factory for en-US this car. In fact, heres a copy of the invoice. en-US Thats what the dealer paid the factory all en-US right, but its not what he paid the factory en-US after he got his holdback check in the en-US mailor, lets call a spade a spade, his en-US KICK-BACK. zh-CN You might be thinking, so were talking zh-CN about $200 more or less on a $10,000 car. zh-CN Who cares? Dont forget, that was almost 50 zh-CN years ago. Holdbacks have expanded zh-CN considerably and now instead of several zh-CN hundred dollars were talking several zh-CN thousand. Also, dealers no longer must wait zh-CN a year to get their hold back money back. zh-CN Now they get it back monthly. zh-CN Manufacturers even changed the names zh-CN of these monies they hold back. ese are zh-CN innocuous names so that, if you see them zh-CN on the invoice, you will have no suspicionzh-CN names like oorplan assistance, advertising, zh-CN PDI, Administrative or DAP. Of course, zh-CN there are also cash rebates to dealers that zh-CN dont even show on the invoice. I estimate zh-CN the average car invoice today includes zh-CN $3,000 to $4,000 in hidden holdbacks to the zh-CN dealer. Holdbacks are also applied to factory zh-CN or distributor accessories like protection zh-CN packages [wax, undercoat, window etch, zh-CN roadside assistance], oor mats, window zh-CN tint, etc. zh-CN e bottom line is that you should never zh-CN rely on the dealers factory invoice to zh-CN determine the price you are willing to pay zh-CN for a car. And be especially suspicions when zh-CN the dealer quotes you a price of X dollars zh-CN over invoice or shows you the invoice. zh-CN Youve heard the old joke, How can you zh-CN tell when a politician is lying? Answer: zh-CN When his lips are moving. zh-CN How can you tell when a car dealer is zh-CN lying? Answer: When he shows you the zh-CN invoice. en-US 11 en-USattorney and Ms. Featherstone affirmed that en-US it had.en-US The state has provided a contract that en-US they follow, and thats basically what this is, en-US as well as any of the concerns that we have en-US addressed, the deputy superintendent said. en-US They have met those needs and the quesen-US -en-US tions we had.en-US School Superintendent Laurie Gaylord en-US concurred and recommended the Board en-US approve the contract. en-US The recommendation is based upon the en-US fact we have worked out an agreement with en-US our attorney and their attorney, she said. en-US Weve already accepted the application en-US back in April, and hammering out the agreeen-US -en-US ment with the contract, we feel that were at en-US a place of consensus. en-US Several members of the public addressed en-US the Board that evening, with all but one en-US expressing support for approval. Elizabeth en-US Williams admitted the Common Core inien-US -en-US tiative has worried her and she had previen-US -en-US ously pulled one of her children out of the en-US countys public school system.en-US You may not have been able to do anyen-US -en-US thing about the Common Core debacle, but en-US I thank you for doing something with a yes en-US to vote the sign the charter contract for the en-US Treasure Coast Classical Academy and given-US-en-US ing our community a choice again, she said. en-US It really is truly about success for all stuen-US -en-US dents, and there is not one size that fits all.en-US Retired educator and educational diagen-US -en-US nostician Audrey Capozzi offered her en-US insight into the curriculum of the Barney en-US Charter School Initiative of Hillsdale Colen-US -en-US lege that TCCA plans to utilize.en-US Classical, in terms of Barney Charter en-US School, means traditional -its what everyen-US -en-US one learned in the past, she said. Classical en-US education means knowledge is valued for its en-US own sake. Childrens astounding curiosity is en-US nurtured and rigorous mental training is the en-US order of the day. The establishment of this en-US school does not denigrate Martin schools in en-US any way. In fact, it only enhances the Disen-US -en-US trict by providing additional choice to paren-US -en-US ents and teachers.en-US When Chairwoman Christia Li Roberts en-US opened the contract discussion up to the en-US Board, Ms. McSoley repeated her list of reaen-US -en-US sons for opposing the TCCA in an attempt en-US to debunk the positive attributes listed by en-US the public speakers. en-US It does not provide innovative methods en-US -there are no significant additional educaen-US -en-US tional opportunities at all, she said. Actualen-US -en-US ly several speakers said that there were -en-US theyre not, theres nothing new or different en-US to Martin County, which Hope and Clark en-US [the Districts only other charter schools] do en-US provide. And the original reason to have en-US charter schools coming into counties was to en-US provide additional opportunities for chilen-US -en-US dren: It does not do that.en-US Ms. McSoley ran through a list of proben-US-en-US lems she found with the proposal, ranging en-US from the schools projected growth rates to en-US tentative plans to locate the campus near the en-US St. Lucie County line to attract students en-US from that district, enabled by the states conen-US-en-US trolled open enrollment policy.en-US They know they can fill that with open en-US seats, she said. Four hundred and eighty en-US six open seats times $7,000-plus of student en-US money, means approximately $4 million. en-US Lets say that 486 students the first year leave en-US Martin County schools and go into TCCA en-US and they take their money with them. Thats en-US $4 million being diverted from Martin en-US County Public Schools into TCCA, which en-US again offers nothing new and unique that en-US the Martin County School District doesnt en-US offer. Our bank account will decrease by $4 en-US million, and we will still have to serve those en-US 486 students at the administrative level.en-US For her part, Chairwoman Roberts had en-US questions about the schools planned use of en-US the Singapore Math program and how the en-US teachers would handle gifted students or en-US those of different ability levels in the same en-US grade, particularly those who might come in en-US mid-year. The Singapore system is designed en-US on ability level rather than grade level, and en-US TCCA Chairwoman and Collier County en-US School Board member Erika Donalds said en-US that issue had already been tackled successen-US-en-US fully in the charter school opened recently en-US in her school district. en-US We did have some students who were at en-US the top when we started K-6 and then went en-US to [grade] 7, they may have been ready for en-US eighth grade math or ninth grade math, she en-US explained. Some students took advantage en-US of online courses just until the school could en-US build out the remaining capacity in order to en-US offer those full courses. We try as best we en-US can to implement a math block, so that all en-US students within the grade band take that at en-US the same time each day; so we can accomen-US-en-US modate those students that might need to go en-US back a little further, at least until they catch en-US up and get closer to where their grade level en-USpeers are in the Singapore math levels.en-US Ms. Roberts posed several other quesen-US -en-US tions to Ms. Donalds about school safety, en-US transportation and the make-up of TCCA en-US board, expressing a desire for local control en-US of the latter to be spelled out in the contract. en-US I know right now you have three people en-US on your governing board, she said. You en-US have one thats a local resident, you have en-US yourself, -which is on the other side of the en-US state -and then someone whos in Tallahasen-US -en-US see. So Im looking for something that says en-US no more than two members of the board en-US shall be non Martin County residents and en-US the majority of the members of the governen-US -en-US ing board shall be residents of Martin Counen-US -en-US ty. So do you all have an issue with that?en-US Ms. Donalds balked at making any new en-US changes to the contract, which she said was en-US already delayed due to the Board majoritys en-US refusal to take up the matter at an earlier en-US date. en-US We did extensive negotiations with your en-US attorney throughout the past four months, en-US she said. Im not prepared to speak on en-US additional items of negotiation without en-US properly going back to our governing board en-US and achieving a consensus and a vote on en-US those items. Based on the timeline, if these en-US items were important to the Chair or to the en-US Board, they really should have been brought en-US up earlier. Were already very well past the en-US deadline for this contract to be signed.en-US Ms. Donalds attempted to allay the chairen-US -en-US womans fears about local control, however, en-US while alleging that current board members en-US had already been the victims of verbal en-US attacks locally.en-US We have identified Martin County resien-US -en-US dents who desire to serve on the Board, and en-US thats been the intention all along, she said. en-US But getting through this process as a board en-US member, is not something you want to put en-US on a volunteer -who simply wants to do en-US this to help children -through. Its a proen-US -en-US cess for people like us who can stand here en-US and take the kind of vitriol and lies told en-US about them.en-US Board Member McSoley then jumped en-US back in the conversation, putting Ms. Donen-US -en-US alds on the defensive.en-US So the charter school you opened over en-US where you are on the west coast, are all the en-US board members local board members? Ms. en-US McSolely asked.en-US Ms. Donalds emphasized she no longer en-US had any direct oversight of the Mason Clasen-US -en-US sical Academy in Naples, which she helped en-US found.en-US The school that I have no say over except en-US to be a parent of the school, the majority of en-US those are local board members, she en-US responded.en-US When Ms. McSoley continued to prod en-US her, the gloves came off.en-US Youre making an implication and youre en-US leading down a line of questioning in order en-US to deceive the public as you just did on the en-US diatribe that you went on earlier, Ms. Donen-US-en-US alds exclaimed. en-US The TCCA chairman then refused to en-US answer any more of Board Member McSoen-US -en-US leys questions unrelated to the contract, and en-US the debate briefly took on the atmosphere of en-US a court battle. The latter solicited Chairen-US -en-US woman Roberts assistance in forcing Ms. en-US Donalds to answer questions about TCCA en-US board members, and the chairwoman more en-US carefully chose the wording of the questions en-US to ease the tension in the chambers. Ms. en-US Donalds then responded. en-US The new contract with Hillsdale College en-US requires five board members, so in order to en-US be a partner with Hillsdale College, now you en-US must have five board members, she said. en-US And our intention is that those five board en-US members would be Martin County residents en-US and that the board meetings of those five en-US board members would be in Martin County en-US and accessible to the residents and citizens en-US of Martin County.en-US After a little more discussion, Ms. McSoen-US -en-US ley made a motion to reject the contract, en-US which died for a lack of a second. Commisen-US -en-US sion Michael DiTerlizzi, who participated en-US remotely in the discussion, then made a en-US substitute motion to accept the contract, en-US seconded by Board Member Marsha Powen-US -en-US ers. That motion passed 3-2, with Ms. en-US McSoley and Chairwoman Roberts dissenten-US -en-US ing. en-US 14 en-USI en-USremember when I got my first laptop en-US back in the 1990s, how wonderful life as en-US going to be I imagined how easy it en-US would be when someone called while I was en-US on the road, I could just open the cover, tap en-US a few keys and have all the information I en-US needed at my fingertips. I also recall a failed en-US experiment with Via Voice (IBMs voice en-US recognition software) where I tried in vain en-US to write my column by speaking into the en-US laptops microphone.en-US The reality, unfortunately, came nowhere en-US near the fantasy.en-US First of all that old laptop of mine en-US weighed a ton. I had one of those carry bags en-US with the wheels and a handle that pulled en-US out and dragged it behind me everywhere I en-US went but that wasnt really the worst part. I en-US mean carrying tools around is always part en-US of a road warriors lifestyle; at least this en-US thing had wheels! No, the big problem was en-US how long the damn thing took to turn on.en-US You see with my Day Runner, all I had to en-US do is open the book to todays date and start en-US writing. It even had a little plastic book en-US mark thingy so I could open it to todays en-US date without looking. The only issue I had en-US with the Day Runner is every couple of en-US months I would run out of calendar pages en-US and have to go get new ones.en-US With my laptop it was downright en-US embarrassing! You think it takes computers en-US a long time to boot up today? You wouldnt en-US believe how long the wait was 20 years ago.en-US I can clearly remember trying to get into en-US my machine to look someones information en-US up and waiting and waiting and waiting. en-US And dont get me started on the battery life!en-US I learned a valuable lesson in those days en-US and it was to always keep my power cable en-US handy and be aware of the location of the en-US nearest outlet. (I even had a $30 inverter in en-US my car so I could plug in when I needed to). en-US The battery would always look like it had en-US enough power but, if I wasnt near an outlet en-US then Murphys law would kick in and the en-US battery would die right when I was in the en-US middle of some important task. en-US No, the whole using my laptop instead en-US of a Day Runner experiment was a dismal en-US failure. I found myself carrying my Day en-US Runner and lugging my laptop behind me.en-US Fast forward to now and Im very happy en-US to say I love living in the future! You may en-US have noticed these devices called Tablets en-US seem to be popping up all over the place en-US and recently I became the proud owner of en-US one. And with my tablet, those fantasies en-US that I had in the 90s of having all of my en-US data at my fingertips with my laptop have en-US all come true but with the tablet!en-US The first thing that Ive noticed is that en-US when I press the little button on the bottom en-US of my tablet (an iPad) its on. And I mean en-US instantly. There is no five-minute wait for en-US the thing to boot up and when it does wake en-US up I have access to everything! I can access en-US email, my address book and all of my notes en-US that I make while Im working and the en-US clever part is that the notes that I read have en-US usually been typed in at my home office on en-US my desktop computer. They just happen to en-US synchronize with my tablet so when Im out en-US in the field, everything that I worked on at en-US my main computer at home is available on en-US my tablet instantly I just turn it on and en-US after a few taps I have the information I en-US need. And when I type something into my en-US tablet, it synchronizes with my desktop en-US computer so I dont have to retype anything en-US when I get home.en-US Even the speech recognition software en-US works much better still not well enough en-US to just speak my column into existence but en-US excellent for quick notes.en-US The best part is when I really need en-US something on my desktop at home, I can en-US connect to my home machine with one of en-US several free remote desktop applications en-US and see my entire desktop on my tablet just en-US as if I was sitting in front of it. en-US It took 20 years but with my tablet I en-US finally have all the capabilities that I en-US thought I would have with my laptop. en-US 16 en-USIen-USn golf, the only connection that we have en-US with our equipment comes through the en-US grip. We depend on the grips on our en-US clubs to control the club and to transmit to en-US the ball where it is to go. Grips also send en-US back to our brains information about how en-US well we struck the ball.en-US A few years ago I played with what had en-US to be the worst set of rental clubs ever. Only en-US a couple of clubs out of the 14 in the bag en-US had a grip that wasnt as hard as a rock and en-US as slippery as a fish. It made for a strange en-US round to say the least. en-US I constantly was afraid the club would fly en-US out of my hands. To prevent that, I gripped en-US the club too tightly, putting far too much en-US tension into my arms and body. I eventually, en-US just tried to hit different shots with the two en-US or three clubs that had a grip slightly en-US younger than I.en-US Todays grip market is huge. The number en-US of choices we golfers have to perfect our en-US connection with our tools is amazing. Grips en-US come in more colors and combinations than en-US Crayola can put in a box, as well as different en-US weights and different sizes.en-US We didn't always have all these choices. en-US In fact, there are few written records en-US regarding the history of golf grips. We can en-US assume that the shepherds who invented en-US the game, likely did not turn their crooks en-US upside down and wrap the bottom with en-US anything before hitting stones around the en-US hillsides of Scotland.en-US It is unclear when grip first appeared on en-US clubs, but we do know that a wool listing en-US was used in the 18th century. In to the 19th en-US century, this would be covered with en-US sheepskin before leather and then rubber en-US would take over in the 20th century.en-US Some golfers would apply chalk to their en-US grips to help them stay dry. Additionally, en-US olive oil, wax, pitch and varnish would be en-US used to help golfers better grip their clubs.en-US While grips last much longer today than en-US they did back when they were simple wool en-US listings or leather, they should still be en-US replaced about every 40 rounds. More often en-US if your hands sweat a lot or they are en-US constructed of a material that starts to break en-US down. Your grips should feel tacky in your en-US hand and should never get to the point en-US where they are hard or cracked. It's always en-US good to replace your entire set, keeping the en-US same feel with every club in your bag.en-US Many people do not know the imporen-US -en-US tance of getting the proper grip size or en-US being fit for your grip. When custom fitting en-US your clubs for shaft, shaft flex, loft, lie and en-US more, it is equally important to have the en-US right grip size. There are many grip sizes en-US available and you can even alter the en-US thickness of the grip during the en-US installation process.en-US A grip that is too small may en-US cause overactive hands, while one en-US that is too large may prevent you en-US from releasing the club through en-US impact. One good measure is that en-US when gripping your club, your en-US middle and ring finger should en-US just about touch the palm pad of en-US your hand.en-US Between grip changes, you en-US should wash your grips frequenten-US -en-US ly. Anyone who has watched Fred en-US Couples play, will notice that he en-US not only plays without a glove, en-US but wipes his grips clean with a moist towel en-US before every shot.en-US As you play, sweat and oils from your en-US hands are transferred onto your grips. If en-US you fail to clean then, your grips will en-US become slippery and difficult to hold onto en-US during your swing. Using just a towel en-US dipped in a soapy water solution will do the en-US trick. Dawn dish soap is great for cutting en-US through the hand oil and sweat that en-US accumulate on your grips.en-US In 1925 golf's original grip manufactured en-US was established by Elver Lamkin out of his en-US garage in suburban Chicago. His en-US hand-crafted, premium leather grips en-US quickly became the rage among golfers en-US looking for a consistent, comfortable, and en-US tacky grip.en-US In the 1960s, under the direction of en-US Elvers son Rovbert Lamkin, the company en-US began manufacturing leather and rubber en-US hybrid grips. Eventually the company en-US would move on to synthetic rubber, en-US providing a more affordable grip.en-US There is only one thing more afforden-US -en-US able than an affordable grip, and that would en-US happen to be a free grip. en-US Thanks to Lamkin, I am giving away en-US not just a grip, but an entire 13 grip set of its en-US latest grips to one lucky reader. en-US 18 en-USyellow banners that say Please Slow, Manaen-US -en-US tees Below. Boaters hold the banners up en-US high when they spot a manatee to warn en-US other boaters that manatees are present.en-US There must be a way for Floridians to en-US enjoy boating and recreating on our wateren-US -en-US ways without hurting or killing manatees, en-US said Dr. Katie Tripp, Save the Manatees en-US Director of Science and Conservation. No en-US one spends more time on Floridas waters or en-US better understands the factors that lead to en-US manatee strikes.en-US Dr. Tripp thinks that boaters themselves, en-US by becoming more proactive for manatees, en-US can head off the need for increased law en-US enforcement. Anyone whos getting behind en-US the wheel or handlebars of a vessel needs to en-US be responsible and know what theyre en-US doing.en-US We dont know anyone who intentionally en-US aims to injure manatees during a day of en-US boating, said Dr. Tripp. But terrible injuen-US -en-US ries and suffering occur nonetheless, and we en-US can do better.en-US Red tide is also a deadly danger to manaen-US -en-US tees.en-US Martin County adopted the term Lost en-US Summer in 2013 to describe the disaster en-US caused by discharges from Lake Okeechobee en-US into coastal communities, said Dr. Tripp. en-US Posted signs warned against swimming, en-US fishing, or otherwise coming in contact with en-US the water that was covered in guacamoen-US -en-US le-thick algae. The moniker was unfortuen-US -en-US nately applicable again in 2016 and now en-US again in 2018.en-US On Floridas west coast, red tide has en-US killed nearly 1,100 manatees over the last 23 en-US years, and because blooms now occur so freen-US-en-US quently, they are no longer characterized as en-US unusual mortality events, said Dr. Tripp. en-US The organism that causes red tide is natuen-US -en-US rally-occurring. The input of human-generen-US -en-US ated pollution into our coastal waters, which en-US causes that organism to bloom and wreak en-US havoc, is far from natural. The same is true en-US for the various algae blooms that have en-US occurred in the Indian River Lagoon in en-US recent years, resulting in the deaths of manen-US -en-US atees, dolphins, fish, and sea birds, and the en-US loss of tens of thousands of acres of vitalen-US-en-US ly-important seagrass.en-US Red tide acts as a neurotoxin, giving manen-US -en-US atees seizures that can result in drowning. en-US Sick, injured, or orphaned manatees should en-US be reported to the Florida Fish and Wildlife en-US Conservation, because they can often be en-US saved if rescued in time.en-US If manatees exposed to red tide can be en-US moved out of the affected area by trained en-US biologists and stabilized at a critical care en-US facility, their prognosis is often very good, en-US said Dr. Tripp.en-US To report such animals or to alert the en-US FWC to any other hazardous conditions or en-US incidents affecting marine wildlife, call en-US 1-888-404-FWCC (3992). This week, I want en-US to talk a little about the cleanup process en-US after a storm. I want to share some of the en-US tips I found useful while cleaning up after en-US Frances, Jeanne, Wilma and Irma. These en-US were the last major storms to hit our region. en-US Although 2018 is supposed to be below en-US normal, it only takes one tropical system to en-US make a mess of your yard.en-US If you are like me, one look at the yard en-US and it makes you wonder where you should en-US even start when planning your cleanup en-US effort. The first tool you will need is a good en-US quality chain saw. Gas is preferred over en-US electric because the gas chain saws have en-US more power and also if your power is out, en-US you will not be able to use your electric en-US chain saw unless you have a generator. en-US Before you start cutting your trees, be sure en-US to take a full survey of your yard. Confirm en-US that there are no power lines entangled in en-US your work area and also that there are no en-US large dangling limbs that could fall and hit en-US you once you start working. If a large tree en-US needs to be cut down, it is probably best to en-US leave that to an expert tree service. Most of en-US my tree debris was already on the ground en-US and simply had to be cut up and taken to en-US the curb.en-US Once you have all the large debris en-US removed and cut up at your curb, the next en-US thing you should do is re-survey your yard en-US for other damage that may have been en-US hidden with the larger tree branches. When en-US trying to clean up small twigs and leaves en-US from an area that has either steppingstones en-US or gravel, a great tool to use for cleanup is a en-US gas blower. I had a large garden area that is en-US covered with lava rock and trying to use a en-US rake to get the debris was also picking up en-US all the lava rock. I brought out the trusty en-US gas blower and about 97% of the debris was en-US magically whisked away! In fact, as a en-US preliminary task before raking, I successen-US -en-US fully removed a good deal of debris from en-US the lawn area with the blower. This made en-US the next pass with a regular garden rake en-US much easier. Once you are done with that, a en-US pass with a mulching lawn mower will en-US really put the finishing touches on your en-US yard. en-US Once you finish getting your yard back en-US to some kind of normalcy, you can start en-US planning your fall garden. Yes I said Fall, it en-US is actually not that far off. Stores already are en-US clearing out patio sets getting ready for en-US Halloween and Christmas.en-US Remember, for all the latest updates and en-US information, go to en-US www.hometownweather.en-US neten-US en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape.
