en-US 4 Changes are happening en-USbehind the scenesen-USOen-USne of the misconceptions about en-US computers (and the internet in en-US general) that many people have is en-US this idea that things should work and look en-US just as they did yesterday and the day en-US before. I find myself explaining that the en-US computer isnt a static, stationary object like en-US a VCR or a toaster but a dynamic moving en-US target that changes every time something en-US gets updated. en-US People are often surprised, shocked even, en-US when they visit a site they go to every day en-US only to find something has changed and en-US nine out of 10 times the change came from en-US a behind the scenes update that they didnt en-US have anything to do with. Often, by the en-US time I get the call, hours have been wasted en-US by the user trying to figure out whats en-US wrong on their end because its never done en-US this before. The fact of the matter is every en-US time an update happens on your computer en-US or on the computer hosting a website that en-US you visit often, code is being re written and en-US things are changing. Now, you may not be en-US able to see any evidence of a change but en-US sometimes changes can have a big impact en-US on the way a site looks or behaves. en-US I recently received the following email en-US message from one of my readers and (with en-US permission from Priscilla) I thought Id en-US share the exchange as its a perfect example en-US of what can happen when a change is made en-US behind the scenes and just how big an en-US impact some changes can be. en-US To: Sean McCarthy en-US Subject: Question about Secure Connecen-US -en-US tionen-US I am currently using Google Chrome as en-US my web browser. When I go to some en-US websites, instead of getting the secure Icon en-US (lock), I get an i icon. When I click on en-US that it says the website doesnt have a secure en-US connection. However, if I use Internet en-US Explorer, I dont have a problem. What is en-US the problem that I am having with Google en-US Chrome?en-US Thank you in advance for your help.en-US Priscillaen-US Hi Priscilla, thanks for writing.en-US You actually arent seeing (or having) a en-US problem. Google made a decision a couple en-US months ago that has angered just about the en-US entire world wide web community. Google en-US decided that for ANY site that didnt have en-US an SSL Certificate it (Chrome) would list en-US the site in the info box (the I icon) as un en-US secure.en-US Since most sites dont use SSL because en-US they are just static brochure like pages, en-US they dont need the SSL security certificate en-US as there is no data being passed back and en-US forth that needs to be secured. Usually SSL en-US or secure sites are in place for sites where en-US you have to log in and pass information en-US back and forth like Facebook or Gmail or en-US banking. Most other sites that dont require en-US logging in just plain dont need an SSL en-US certificate.en-US When Google decided to just mark any en-US site not using SSL as unsecure, they en-US essentially blackballed millions of websites en-US overnight. en-US Needless to say this has angered a whole en-US lot of website owners.en-US The bottom line is there is nothing en-US wrong Internet Explorer, Edge, Firefox en-US dont list sites without certificates as un en-US secure because those browsers dont care. en-US Its a Google Chrome thing and nothing to en-US worry about.en-US I hope that helps. en-US Seanen-US Thank you for your reply. It made me en-US feel better. Hope you are having a great en-US weekend. en-US Priscilla en-US Again, this a perfect example of how one en-US behind the scenes update (Chrome version en-US 68, released near the end of July) changed en-US the way Chrome handles plain old HTTP en-US sites and suddenly, sites that have been en-US fine for years are being presented as un en-US secure. And since security is such a big en-US issue, suddenly having every standard en-US HTTP site present as un secure has many en-US people really concerned. en-US Sometimes I long for the good old days en-US when updates were somewhat controllable. en-US Of course weve never really had any en-US control over when a website like Yahoo or en-US MSN updates but there was a time when we en-US had a little more control over when a en-US program on our own local machine en-US updates. Now it seems like every program en-US installed wants to phone home the en-US minute its launched to see if theres an en-US update. And with constant updates there is en-US constant change. Thats just the way it is. en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. There really en-US was a law; but no more.en-US After I retired from the New York Police en-US Department, I took a job in 1992 as a law en-US enforcement officer here. At that time, the en-US Florida Motor Vehicle and Traffic Law proen-US -en-US hibited loud music emanating from a motor en-US vehicle, if the music or noise could be heard en-US within a distance of about 20 feet from the en-US vehicle. We enforced that law when necesen-US -en-US sary, writing a uniform traffic citation.en-US Unfortunately, as a result of a lawsuit en-US claiming the law was unconstitutional in en-US that operators of motor vehicles had a conen-US -en-US stitutional right to play music as loud as en-US they wanted to, the court hearing the case en-US agreed. That is why loud music from a vehien-US -en-US cle is not enforced. (Local noise ordinances en-US may apply if at night.)en-US Although I am still a law enforcement en-US officer in my 48th year, all I can do now en-US when some individual, who will likely go en-US deaf in 20 years, pulls next to my patrol car en-US with music blaring, is to look at the operator en-US with a serious face. That usually results in en-US the music being turned down.en-USEnforce littering en-US laws on the beachen-USUnbelievably we still need to remind peoen-US -en-US ple not to litter.en-US We need to take some tax money and post en-US signs at all beach entrance accesses, on the en-US lifeguard stands and throughout the beach. en-US These signs should remind people to clean en-US up their trash and to not use the beach as en-US their ashtray. The signs should also post the en-US minimum fines for littering and most en-US importantly, the law should be enforced by en-US police and beach patrol.en-US The fines collected would help offset the en-US cost of enforcing the no littering law, but en-US more importantly help clean up the beaches. en-US How disgusting is it to see children playing en-US in cigarette butts at the beach or to see all en-US the cigarette butts piled up in the high-tide en-US line.en-USRight of center is Nazismen-USFor those who claim that voting for any en-US candidates "anywhere left of center" means en-US your vote would be one step closer to socialen-US -en-US ism/communism: following that logic, voten-US-en-US ing for anyone anywhere right of center en-US would bring us one step closer to Nazism.en-USEnsure a seniors well-beingen-USHeat exhaustion can sneak up, causing en-US increased body temperature, rapid pulse, en-US headache and fatigue. If you dont get cool, en-US youll dehydrate, possibly suffer a stroke, or en-US worse, die.en-US Of 8,000-plus heat-related fatalities en-US reported annually in the United States, 36 percent are among those age 65 and en-USolder, according to a Centers for Disease en-US Control Heat-Related Illness Survey. Hospien-US -en-US talizations for heat-related symptoms en-US increase for those older than 85.en-US Those with elderly friends, relatives or en-US neighbors are encouraged to take five minen-US -en-US utes to check in on them, particularly in en-US very hot weather. Studies show there are far en-US too few professional caregivers for aging en-US adults, a trend expected to continue for the next 10 years or more, so non-professionals en-USplay a vital role in keeping seniors safe. Given-US -en-US ing just a few minutes of your time to ensure en-US a seniors well-being can be highly rewarden-US -en-US ing. You might even save a life.en-USHelp to reduce media panicen-USYes, if you live in a coastal region in the en-US direct path of a major hurricane, you should en-US probably evacuate.en-US The media and governor had the entire en-US state worked up into a panic for last year's en-US "unprecedented" Irma. Sadly we did not en-US learn from "unprecedented" Matthew in en-US 2016. A hurricane slows down after it hits en-US land, If you live in Orlando and inland comen-US -en-US munities you probably don't need to evacuen-US -en-US ate. The Chicken Little local news and the en-US governor with their whole "get out now!" en-US and "you will die" was way over the top.en-US There were so many people evacuating en-US the highways were clogged for days and gas en-US stations ran out of gas. The people who en-US needed to evacuate, who kept cool and waiten-US-en-US ed to see where the storm was going to hit, en-US now had to hours and hours of traffic jams en-US and the possibility of going through the en-US storm out of gas on the side of the road.en-US Let's be a little smarter for the next one, en-US and by all means evacuate if you want to en-US play it safe, but please, don't let the media en-US sensationalism get us all worked up.en-USIrrigate politely, not the sidewalken-USReally people, your sidewalks are not en-US going to green up so would you stop sprinen-US -en-US kling them? If you cant, could you put your en-US irrigation timer on to water that zone before en-US sunrise, so that dog walkers and children en-US walking to school dont have to walk in the en-US street to avoid your sprinkler, which may be en-US using reclaimed water? (yuck.)en-USWe cant continue to pile up en-US problems for future generationsen-USMy children will never have the same en-US level of comfort that my husband and I have en-US had. I cant even imagine what the future en-US holds for my grandchildren.en-US Climate change may very well change life en-US on earth. Add to that the fact that our retireen-US -en-US ment years are more uncertain today than en-US ever before. Not only have we allowed the en-US economy to implode, weve made sure that en-US the next generations life expectancy is years en-US less than ours.en-US How did we let this happen? I think its en-US apathy. We saw things that were happening en-US but thought that someone else would do en-US something about it. I remember the saying en-US We are the ones weve been waiting for en-US and we didnt even realize it.en-US We cant continue to pile up all these en-US problems for future generations to solve. Waterblasting Technologies en-US manufactures a large variety of roadand en-US runway-maintenance machines and its laten-US -en-US est line developed over the past four years -en-US Stripe Hog, Paint Hog, Thermo Hog, Rumen-US -en-US ble Hog and Surface Hog -have led to the en-US addition of Hog Technologies to the compaen-US -en-US ny name, which he emphasized the day of en-US the groundbreaking.en-US Hog Technologies is made up of about en-US 100 people and were making room, but this en-US whole thing is not about building a builden-US -en-US ing, he said. Its about building people. en-US Were a team that cares about our communien-US -en-US ty and the region beyond.en-US Both Senate President Joe Negron and en-US Congressman Brian Mast attended the en-US groundbreaking, with the latter praising Mr. en-US Crockers entrepreneurial spirit.en-US This is what this country is all about, he en-US said. The ability to go out there, be an en-US entrepreneur, have an idea, bring it to maren-US -en-US ket, develop it, have all the people around in en-US the community that are going to support en-US you -this is what community and this en-US country is all about. en-US Sen. Negron emphasized Mr. Crockers en-US success in helping to turn the tables on the en-US trade deficit. The first automated machine en-US manufactured by Waterblasting Technoloen-US-en-US gies went to the United Kingdom.en-US I want to congratulate the importance of en-US this business, particularly in Martin County, en-US that we have a manufacturing company en-US thats building things and selling them all en-US over the world, he said. en-US Congressman Mast got a first-hand look en-US at some of companys exports when he visiten-US -en-US ed the current facility at 3170 S.E. Slater St. en-US recently and saw runway cleaning machinen-US-en-US ery destined for the Airports Authority of en-US India.en-US This is amazing technology being createn-US -en-US ed right here in Stuart, and its utilized all en-US over the world, he said. The fact that this en-US Stuart company exports nearly 30 percent of en-US its entire revenue base is really quite impresen-US -en-US sive. Everyone knows that there are enoren-US -en-US mous trade deficits these days, so anytime en-US we can offset that, thats great news.en-US Todays manufacturing operation and en-US huge employee base is a far cry from the en-US small storage shed Mr. Crocker built in 1988 en-US on a small parcel rented from the Hobe en-US Sound Bible College to launch his pressure en-US cleaning operation after graduating from en-US the institution that same year. He said a en-US pivotal moment came in 1997 when he en-US bought his first 40,000 PSI water blaster and en-US was hired that year by a West Palm contracen-US -en-US tor to remove the yellow lines from a bridge en-US deck near Southern Boulevard. en-US He asked me when I was done doing the en-US work how much I wanted, he said. It had en-US only taken me 45 minutes to an hour, and he en-US said $800 -I couldnt believe my ears. From en-US that day to this, it has been my passion to en-US remove stripes and make it painless for the en-US contractor.en-US Soon Mr. Crocker leapfrogged to automaen-US-en-US tion by installing the spray heads on the en-US front of self-propelled lawnmowers and his en-US business grew by word of mouth throughout en-US the road construction industry. His employen-US -en-US ee base had then grown to about 10 workers.en-US The process of referrals started happenen-US -en-US ing very quickly when contractors realized en-US water blasting was so much faster than en-US sandblasting and much less messier, he en-US explained. The growth was phenomenal en-US and contractors converted to the method. en-US By 1999 I was adding vacuum recovery, and en-US now Im leaving the roads clean and almost en-US dry and they dont have to wait in order to en-US repaint. en-US The entrepreneur said his next major en-US shift occurred in 2005, when Waterblasting en-US Technologies sold its first automated unit to en-US WJ Roadmarkings in Great Britain.en-US It took a really big change very quickly, en-US he added. I couldnt believe that the first en-US sale came from the European market. It en-US started growing very quickly and spread all en-US over Europe.en-US The addition of Hog Technologies and en-US runway cleaning, which now includes vehien-US-en-US cles such as the Rumble Hog that utilizes en-US diamond teeth to carve rumble strips along en-US the highway shoulder, had its origins in a en-US visit to Key West in 2002.en-US We were down at the Boca Chica Naval en-US Air and I was down there removing paint en-US from a runway and I saw all that black stuff en-US [airplane tire skid marks] just a few steps en-US away and I was curious about whether the en-US machine would clean it up and it did, he en-US said. I asked the airport manager if he had en-US to clean up that stuff, and sure enough withen-US en-USin a couple of weeks during our time there, a en-US big truck came out with chemicals and spray en-US heads. I had the idea that I could adapt my en-US machines with wider spray heads up to 14 en-US inches wide.en-US The companys phenomenal growth led en-US the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of en-US Commerce to name Mr. Cocker its 2017 en-US Businessperson of the Year, and Chamber en-US President Joe Catrambone believes the en-US Waterblasting Technologies founder has a en-US unique story.en-US Im not sure that weve had a local homeen-US -en-US grown success story more impressive than en-US this one in my 30 years in this county, he en-US exclaimed. en-US Mr. Crocker believes his faith in God en-US helped guide the decisions to buy the 12 en-US acres adjacent to his current operation and en-US then ask the city to annex all the property en-US into the city limits, which will now enable en-US his company to consolidate its manufacturen-US -en-US ing operations under one roof. Before that en-US land came on the market, he had previously en-US planned on moving the entire operation out en-US by the county landfill. en-US I had been leasing a 40,000 square-foot en-US building on Market and Commerce, which en-US housed the fabrication, machine welding, en-US sandblasting, painting, and from there they en-US go over to the assembly line a half-mile away en-US by flatbed truck, he said. Now theyll come en-US right out of the fabrication and on to the en-US assembly line. en-US Waterblasting Technologies plans to hire en-US up to 130 additional employees over the en-US next three years. One of my en-US favorites is a plant called the Travellers en-US Palm. These graceful plants can add en-US tropical splendor to just about any garden. en-US The plants boast huge leaves that resemble en-US those of a banana tree. In fact, the Travellers en-US Palm is not a palm at all but rather it is en-US related to the banana family. The plant can en-US grow upwards to 20 feet at a very rapid en-US pace. My plant has withstood three en-US hurricanes and several freezes but still en-US always comes back hard and strong. I have en-US to do some major trimming after a en-US hurricane but the plant has a remarkable en-US ability to revive itself and comes back en-US looking better and stronger then before. My en-US Travellers Palm is nearing that 20-foot en-US mark as we speak. en-US The Travellers Palm has some unique en-US history in how it received its name. Many en-US years ago back in the pioneer days, people en-US traveling long distances on foot did not en-US have any of the conveniences we have today. en-US Finding water was not as simple as going to en-US the corner grocery store. Since these en-US magnificent plants store abundant amounts en-US of water in the base of their trunks, pioneer en-US travelers could tap that water in the trunks en-US of the tree and use it for drinking. That is en-US how the name Travellers Palm came about. en-US If you have ever have the opportunity to en-US trim one of these trees, you will get nothing en-US short of an unexpected shower! en-US A lot of people want a plant that gives en-US them a great tropical look but they want en-US something that will not grow really fast and en-US stay small as long as possible. The Sago en-US Palm may be the answer. These plants are en-US actually not palms at all but are actually en-US considered a cycad. And the plant boasts a en-US lacy appearance similar to a fern. These en-US plants are very slow growers and will grow en-US to around 10 feet. If you find a larger plant en-US at a nursery, they will be costly mainly en-US because of how long it takes to grow them. en-US They are very hardy and mine has survived en-US 3 hurricanes and several freezes with flying en-US colors. They will make a great addition to en-US your exotic tropical landscape. en-US If you have a shady spot around your en-US house and want a real treat, try a Bamboo en-US Palm. The plant features a reed like en-US appearance, hence the name Bamboo Palm. en-US The plant gives the viewer the image of en-US exotic bamboo with small palm leaves. The en-US plant can grow from 6 feet and is hardy en-US to just below freezing. I have one that has en-US been in the ground for about 10 years and en-US has also survived hurricanes and freezes en-US with flying colors.en-US The next exotic tropical on the list is the en-US Washingtonian Palm. This palm is a very en-US fast grower that can easily get to heights of en-US 60 feet. This plant does great during en-US periods of drought and extreme temperaen-US -en-US tures. It can easily tolerate desert heat into en-US the 100-degree range. The plant also will en-US survive in an area where soil stays moist. en-US Todays Garden Tip: Bougainvillea plants en-US can be rooted if you use cuttings that are en-US semi-ripe. These cuttings can take as long en-US as 4-6 weeks to root and are best kept en-US outdoors. Take your softwood cuttings en-US from new plant growth that has not yet en-US formed into hardwood. Make your cuttings en-US about 3 inches long with at least 3 leaves on en-US the stem. Dip the cutting into a rooting en-US hormone such as Rootone or another en-US similar product and then place in a good en-US quality planting medium that is suitable for en-US new plantings. It is beneficial to place the en-US cuttings in a covered environment similar en-US to a mini greenhouse. Hardwood cuttings en-US can also be used but will take as long as en-US several months to root. This rooting en-US process may take some time so be patient. en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape. en-US 11 en-USnel Jason Kirk and South Florida Water en-US Management District Executive Director en-US Ernie Marks appeared resistant to change en-US during the Stuart meeting and insisted the en-US battle to reduce water discharges to the St. en-US Lucie River and Caloosahatchee estuaries en-US would continue.en-US I think theres a whole lot more fighting en-US that needs to be done with the Army Corps en-US and the Water Management District, he en-US said. en-US During the Aug. 17 meeting, Col. Kirk en-US continually referred to the LORS manual as en-US his Op Order and battle book and said en-US he holds true to its regulations as much as en-US possible. Acknowledging Congressman en-US Masts request to lower lake levels in the dry en-US season, he called managing the water conen-US -en-US cerns of eight million people a balancing en-US act and admitted his Op Order dictated he en-US refuse a desperate Southwest Florida request en-US for more water during the last dry season.en-US In early January, the National Oceanic en-US and Atmospheric Administration forecast en-US told Ernie and I that we were heading into a en-US drought, he said. On Jan. 9 the Caloosaen-US-en-US hatchee stakeholders asked me for water. en-US Because of that forecast and because of our en-US goal per the battle book, to safely operate en-US the lake between 12.5 and 15.5 feet throughen-US -en-US out the year -which is what my Op Order en-US tells me to do -I told the Caloosahatchee en-US stakeholders youre not getting more water. en-US To get where were supposed to, were going en-US to hold per the schedule.en-US As far as this summers discharges, Col. en-US Kirk said he held off as long as he could in en-US spite of record May rainfall.en-US So now Ive got three times normal rain en-US -and not surprisingly in June with nutrien-US -en-US ents in the lake -LORS now told us to do en-US discharges so we could safely manage the en-US lake through the hurricane season, he said. en-US LORS actually told me to do discharges the en-US third week of May; I used a little bit of disen-US -en-US cretion that we have, and before your en-US Memorial Day weekend, we didnt start disen-US -en-US charges. We used operational flexibility, but en-US then on June 1, I started estuarine dischargen-US-en-US es.en-US For his part, Mr. Marks backed up Col. en-US Kirks concerns about dry season lake levels, en-US referring to the severity of droughts beginen-US -en-US ning in 2006 and the extreme measures en-US required by the South Florida Water Manen-US -en-US agement District at the time.en-US The bottom dropped out and we got to en-US the lowest record recorded lake stage at en-US about 8.82 feet, he said. In September of en-US 2006, the District had to purchase 14 temen-US -en-US porary pumps for emergency use at Lake en-US Okeechobee. In January of 2007, again we en-US kicked it up a notch, with public outreach to en-US conserve water. We sent weekly allocations, en-US and then only those amounts to users, and en-US we had to start working with the utilities, en-US nursery growers and landscape associations en-US so they could understand the severity of en-US where we were going. In February 2007, we en-US had public workshops for marinas and busien-US -en-US ness owners around the lake -there was no en-US more water there to navigate. en-US Congressman Mast told Mr. Marks his en-US images of dry docks around Lake en-US Okeechobee and withering lawns in South en-US Florida would fail to impress Martin County en-US or Southwest Florida residents surrounded en-US by green slime.en-US Our community is getting decimated en-US here and there are communities on the west en-US coast getting decimated, he fumed. It en-US didnt just happen this year: It happens year en-US after year. This is something that is preventen-US -en-US able, and its not an apples to apples comparen-US -en-US ison of people having to make sacrifices.en-US The congressman then directed his comen-US -en-US ments to Col. Kirk, painting his refusal to en-US consider lower dry season lake levels as conen-US -en-US tributing to mission failure in the rainy en-US season.en-US Weve heard all of what you said happens en-US with low water levels -there are conseen-US -en-US quences -but there are consequences to en-US high water levels and what happens to our en-US community as well, he said. You said your en-US number one mission is integrity of the Heren-US -en-US bert Hoover Dike; every inch of water off en-US Lake Okeechobee means less risk to that en-US integrity of the dike around Lake en-US Okeechobee. We are asking that you fulfill en-US your mission of putting less risk to that dike; en-US because when it gets to the point of where en-US were at right now, when we say there was en-US high rain that we could not anticipate, to let en-US it get to that point and we have to send it out en-US to estuaries, that cannot be the way going en-US forward every single year for our communien-US -en-US ty.en-US Larry Williams, state supervisor for the en-US U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, also spoke en-US during the meeting at Congressman Masts en-US request on the high number of manatees en-US dying as a result of the brown tide infiltraten-US -en-US ing different parts of the Indian River en-US Lagoon. en-USThats a different form of algae from the en-US blue-green algae, but the way it works is, the en-US brown tide events happen and they shade en-US out the sea grasses, he said. Manatees noren-US -en-US mally feed on the sea grasses and when the en-US sea grass is gone, the manatees start to eat en-US seaweed, and the seaweed has a lower nutrien-US -en-US tional value and it basically causes physioen-US -en-US logical changes in the animals that they en-US eventually die from. About 190 manatees en-US have died in the Lagoon since 2012, and en-US many of those, their stomachs were filled en-US with this seaweed.en-US As Mr. Williams spoke, a couple of hecken-US -en-US lers from the standing room crowd outside en-US yelled out in response. en-US The discharges have killed all our sea en-US grass, said one. en-US manatees have died on Floridas west en-US coast! yelled another. en-US Department of the Interior Deputy Assisen-US-en-US tant Secretary Scott Cameron attempted to en-US calm the fears of the crowd in the packed en-US chambers, which included more than 200 en-US people straining to hear in the foyer, en-US The Interior Department looks forward en-US to continuing to work with the Congressen-US -en-US man and the Corps to get this work done as en-US fast as we possibly can, he said. Our role en-US essentially is to try and smooth out any regen-US -en-US ulatory speed bumps that might be in the en-US way of progress and to assist the Corps and en-US the District with scientific information that en-US might be helpful to more effectively manage en-US the ecological impacts on the whole region en-US and the very tough decisions that have to be en-US made on a very regular basis in this part of en-US the state.en-US Congressman Mast also introduced seven-US -en-US eral local and regional experts, including en-US Martin Health Systems CEO Robert L. Lord en-US Jr. who described part of the local health en-US impact of the Lake Okeechobee discharges.en-US Our emergency departments have come en-US in contact with a good number of patients en-US who have presented with a variety of sympen-US -en-US toms -nausea, vomiting, skin rashes, en-US coughing, shortness of breath, gout, achy en-US limbs, joints -that we have connected with en-US contact with the river, he said. This year, en-US 73 patients in our emergency departments en-US have been treated for symptoms that we en-US believe are related to blue-green algae. en-US Florida Sportsman Magazine Publisher en-US Blair Wickstrom mentioned the potential en-US neurological dangers of cyanobacteria but en-US also focused on the economic impact.en-US This is larger than an ecological/health en-US issue -this is an economic issue, he said. en-US This is impacting the financial well-being en-US of our state. Fishing is the number one en-US activity in the State of Florida, bar none. I en-US filmed a TV show with a local captain on en-US the west coast. I called him last night, and he en-US said Ive lost $25,000 in business the last en-US two and a half months. en-US Sanibel Mayor Kevin Ruane put a face to en-US the even worse ecological and economic en-US damage faced by the Southwest Florida en-US coast during the lake discharges this sumen-US-en-US mer. en-US We are on the verge of collapsing an en-US economy: 2016, 2017 and 2018, he said. Its en-US where we are, and honestly what were doing en-US isnt getting it done. We understand the lake en-US is rising, but when we dont send it east and en-US west, we need to do a better job. Im for en-US every project that was put up there, but en-US theyre not going to be built quick enough. en-US What am I going to do in the meantime? en-US People are never going to come back here.en-US Congressman Mast said Aug. 27 he now en-US has his sights set on next year.en-US My goal is to say as were moving into en-US this winter season I get the Army Corps and en-US the South Florida Water Management Disen-US -en-US trict to get that lake level to a lower level en-US than we normally do, and we dont have to en-US get to an emergency for next year. en-US 15 en-USWen-USith the busy schedule that so en-US many of us have these days, its en-US not always easy to get in a full en-US round of golf. Sometimes, nine holes is just en-US right. Throw in beautiful views and a breeze en-US off the ocean, and you have a perfect quick en-US round of golf.en-US Where does one go to find just such a en-US treat? My quest took me to Island Dunes en-US Country Club on South Ocean Drive in en-US Jensen Beach. Located about 3.5 miles en-US north of the round-a-bout at Jensen Beach en-US Boulevard and State Road A1A, this track en-US offers a nice get-away from the normal.en-US Island Dunes plays to a par of 31 from en-US four sets of tees and measures from 1,738 en-US yards to 2,126 yards long. There are four en-US par-4s and five par-3s. While there is no en-US driving range at the course, there are a few en-US sets of tees and nets for those wanting to get en-US in a few full swings before heading to the en-US first tee.en-US The first hole may the most difficult en-US par-3 on the course. Playing anywhere from en-US 113to 170yards and playing due east, you en-US can find yourself hitting anything from a en-US wedge to a middle iron or hybrid dependen-US -en-US ing on how the wind is blowing. One of my en-US buddies reports that when he plays a second en-US nine the wind sometimes picks up so much en-US in just a couple hours that he has to hit two en-US to three clubs more just to get to the green.en-US The second hole is your first par-4. In en-US addition to being the shortest of the par-4s, en-US this hole also has the widest fairway. If you en-US struggle to get the ball on the fairway here, en-US you need to watch out for the mangroves en-US and wetlands you will encounter over the en-US rest of your round.en-US The third hole is a beautiful par-3. en-US Measuring just 106 yards from the back, en-US there is no excuse for missing the green en-US here. If you do, you will find a challenging en-US pitch or chip or bunker shot to a severely en-US sloped green.en-US After a couple more par-3s and a short en-US par-4, you come to he most challenging en-US par-4 on the course, the 360-yard seventh. en-US You tee shot here must hug the left side of en-US the fairway or you will be blocked out and en-US forced to hit a blind approach to a small en-US green. Also, the longer your drive is, the en-US narrower the fairway becomes and the more en-US likely you are to find a bunker or waste area. en-US If you miss this green, you are better off if en-US your ball lands left or short of the green.en-US The par-3 eighth is Island Dunes en-US signature hole, and it is beautiful. In fact, en-US the ride along the raised wooden bridge en-US through the mangroves to the tee is en-US soothing by itself. en-US Playing to 145yards from the back tees, en-US your tee shot must carry the mangroves and en-US wetlands and land on a green that is only en-US about 45feet deep with the Indian River en-US sitting behind. Its an intimidating shot, as en-US you have to take in the wind, the carry over en-US the hazard, and yet try not to hit the ball en-US onto the beach beyond.en-US The finishing hole is a beautiful, but en-US frightfully narrow, 353-yard par-4 that runs en-US along the river. The more you hug the river en-US side of the fairway, the better your angle will en-US be for your approach. A quirky feature of en-US this hole is a short Green Monster wall en-US that runs along the mangroves down the en-US right side as you near the green. If you hit en-US your tee shot far enough, you can play the en-US carom and find your ball back in the en-US fairway with a short wedge to a well-proen-US -en-US tected green.en-US Island Dunes may not have monster en-US yardage to intimidate the best players, but it en-US does have very undulating greens and some en-US narrow areas that will penalize wayward en-US shots. Best of all, its an easy course to walk, en-US and with the breeze off the ocean or the en-US river, its a pleasurable way to enjoy a round. en-US There is also public beach access just a few en-US hundred yards away, so you can drop off the en-US non-golfers for some beach time while you en-US get in a quick nine.en-US For more information, contact Island en-US Dunes Country Club at (772) 229-2739.en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years. en-US 16 en-USEarl Stewart is the owner and general en-US manager of Earl Stewart Toyota in North en-US Palm Beach. The dealership is located at en-US 1215 N. Federal Highway in Lake Park. en-US Contact him at, en-US call 561-358-1474, fax 561-658-0746 or en-US email en-USget a lot of heat from the Florida Auto en-US Dealers Associations (FADA), auto en-US manufacturers, and most car dealers en-US because I say bad things about the way en-US they do business. In my own defense, Im en-US just one voice among most Americans that en-US feel that the majority of car dealers are en-US unethical and dishonest. The Gallup poll on en-US Honesty and Ethics in Professions has en-US been conducted every year since 1977 (40 en-US plus years) and car dealers have never en-US ranked above fourth from the bottom. Last en-US year they were next to last, just below en-US Congressman and above Lobbyists. All en-US other retailers except car dealers have en-US gotten smart to match the intelligence and en-US high demands of the 21st Century Amerien-US -en-US can consumer, but car dealers are still en-US selling cars the way they did in 1950.en-US The Big Sale Event. If you look online en-US or on TV, youll find that most car dealers en-US in your area are having a sale of some kind. en-US It may be because of a current holiday, too en-US large an inventory of cars, to reduce their en-US taxes, the manager is out of town, or some en-US other nefarious lure. Advertising 101 says en-US that you should give the prospective buyer a en-US motive to act. Unfortunately, it doesnt en-US matter whether the motive is real or not. en-US The fact is that most car dealers do not sell en-US their cars for less during sales events than en-US they do at any other time. I point this out so en-US that you dont rush your buying decision. If en-US you dont buy a car during the tight time en-US constraints of a phony sales event, you can en-US negotiate just as good a price the next day. en-US The exceptions to this are legitimate rebates en-US offered by the manufacturer. These often en-US expire at the end of the month which is one en-US reason why the last day of the month realen-US -en-US ly can be the best time to buy a car.en-US The Price Im giving you is good only en-US today. If a salesman or sales manager tells en-US you that, it is probably only a tactic to push en-US you into buying the car. The only exception en-US would be the expiration of a factory en-US incentive. Once again, this is simply a tactic en-US to push you into buying before you have a en-US chance to do your comparative price en-US shopping.en-US I cant give you my best price, but if you en-US bring me another dealers price, I guarantee en-US Ill beat it.Car dealers are afraid to give en-US you their best price because they fear other en-US dealers will beat if by a few dollars and en-US theyll lose the business. Guess what! Thats en-US called the free market place and thats the en-US way all other businesses are conducted. The en-US only retailer that wont give you a final, en-US out-the-door price is the car dealer. Theyre en-US still selling cars like they were sold in the en-US middle of the 20th century. Can you en-US imagine walking into Target or Macys and en-US asking for the price of dress or a TV set and en-US the sales person tells you cant have it unless en-US you buy it right now?en-US Take the car home tonight and see how en-US you like it.Driving the car, youre consideren-US -en-US ing buying, home can be a good thing. It en-US will give you a lot better idea about how the en-US car performs, etc. However, there are two en-US reasons the car salesman offers this. One is en-US that you must leave the vehicle you might en-US be trading in with the car dealer. This en-US means that you cannot shop prices with en-US other dealers. The second reason is the en-US psychological impact of parking that new en-US car in your driveway where your family and en-US neighbors can see it. The slang expression en-US for this is the puppy dog. If you were to en-US take home a little puppy from the pet store, en-US you and your children would fall in love en-US with her and could not return her the next en-US day. This same tactic is used when a en-US customer has questionable credit. This is en-US referred to as the spot delivery and the en-US dealer will have you sign a form known as a en-US Rescission Agreement. You might not en-US even realize that youve signed it. It says that en-US you must return the car immediately if the en-US bank rejects your credit application. If you en-US dont comply, there are huge financial en-US penalties.en-US Ill hold the car for you, but you must en-US give me a cash deposit.Deposits in Florida en-US are nonrefundable only if that is stated in en-US writing on the receipt for the deposit. en-US Always get a written receipt and not just en-US handwritten on the salesmans business en-US card. Read the receipt and be sure that it en-US does not say in the fine print that refunds en-US are nonrefundable. Its a good idea to give en-US them your credit card for the receipt instead en-US of cash or even a check. You can always proen-US-en-US test the charge with your credit card en-US company if the car dealers tries to unfairly en-US keep your deposit.en-US Make me an offer and I will take it to my en-US manager for approval. This is a very en-US common tactic which you have probably en-US already encountered. Its not unethical. Its en-US simply part of negotiating. I point this out en-US so that you are fully aware that this is part en-US of the negotiating game. Be aware, that no en-US matter what price you offer, the manager en-US will ask you for more money. Even if you en-US offered a high price that would be a very en-US large profit for the dealer, the manager en-US would ask you for more money. The en-US psychology behind this is that if you en-US suddenly accepted the offer, you may en-US frighten the customer by thinking he had en-USoffered too much (which he would have). en-US When you negotiate, you must be well en-US versed on what is a good price for that car. en-US Start out below the best price you think you en-US can buy it for You can obtain fair prices for en-US all cars online with Kelly Blue Book (KBB.en-US com), Consumer Reports,, en-US The really big discount.Recently, a en-US friend showed me direct mail advertising en-US piece from a new car dealer with a coupon This outstanding home is located in Port Saint Lucie and features 5 huge bedrooms, with the possibility to have 6. en-US 17 en-USLen-USong before Mickey made his Florida en-US debut in 1971, Downtown Orlando en-US was drawing tourists to the shores of en-US Lake Eola, who came to view the flocks of en-US beautiful white and black swans, cruise en-US upon the water aboard swan-shaped boats en-US and watch the colorful water ballet en-US produced by the Linton E. Allen Memorial en-US Fountain, the citys most enduring icon. en-US Today the area known as Thornton Park en-US embraces the southwestern side of the lake en-US and offers a charming, tranquil refuge en-US within easy walking distance of all the en-US downtown core has to offer. en-US Gloria and I first discovered the oak-en-US lined brick streets of this enclave a few years en-US ago when we paid a visit to the nearby en-US Colombian consulate to renew her en-US passport. We sensed its special charm that en-US day and have returned twice in the evening en-US hours to watch the nighttime light shoes of en-US both the fountain and the lakes musical en-US Christmas tree during the holidays. For our en-US recent weekend visit, we chose to stay in a en-US truly unique spot in the heart of the en-US neighborhood known as The Verandah at en-US Thornton Park, a former complex of bed en-US and breakfast inns that now serves as a en-US popular venue for occasional free concerts, en-US weddings, receptions and other special en-US events. The facility offers two historic en-US structures to rent, a studio apartment and a en-US two-bedroom, two-bath home with a small en-US swimming pool. We chose the latter via the en-US website and found it to be the en-US perfect base for our constant wanderings, en-US lying just a block or so from the southern en-US shore of Lake Eola. Every morning I joined en-US dozens of other downtown residents, en-US visitors and the resident swans in my walk en-US around the lake, whose broad 0.9-mile en-US pathway makes for a delightful stroll day or en-US night. Since we visited in late August, we en-US were also grateful for the Grapefruit Line of en-US the citys free downtown air conditioned en-US bus service known as LYNX Lymmo, which en-US picked us up and dropped us off just a en-US couple of blocks away on Central Bouleen-US -en-US vard, the commercial avenue lining the en-US western edge of the lake.en-US After our first morning stroll and a quick en-US dip in the pool, we boarded the Lymmo to en-US drop us off near the northern edge of the en-US lake and the dock for the popular swan en-US paddleboats. These charming four-person en-US watercraft have long served as a Downtown en-US Orlando image, although in the 1920s the en-US boats were larger and not propelled by en-US passenger power. We peddled out to the en-US fountain for a few minutes to take photos en-US before the summer heat drove us back to en-US shore and the really air-conditioned Orange en-US County Regional History Center just a en-US couple of blocks away. en-US Housed in the historic 1927 Orange en-US County Courthouse, this museum offers en-US four floors of exhibits, including the en-US building itself, designed by Floridas first en-US registered architect of Indiana limestone en-US and Georgia granite. We started off on the en-US top floor, where Gloria became enamored en-US with the story of the Florida Seminole Tribe en-US and the Pioneer Life exhibit, while I really en-US enjoyed the Citrus Industry exhibit and en-US many of the historical relics such as en-US postcards and fruit crate images. The third en-US floor offers sections on early transportation en-US and aviation, and exhibits on both preand en-US post-Disney tourism. I also enjoyed the en-US fully restored Courtroom B, where I have en-US my only photo ever taken behind the judges en-US bench (shame I didnt have the robe to put en-US on!). The second floor of the museum is en-US dedicated to Central Floridas African en-US American heritage as well as to traveling or en-US special exhibits. The most striking exhibit en-US presently is dedicated to the victims and en-US survivors of the Pulse Nightclub shooting en-US two years ago, with photographs, personal en-US tributes and other memorabilia created in en-US the aftermath of the tragedy. en-US We spent the rest of the afternoon en-US wandering the streets of Downtown en-US Orlando, where we viewed the artworks on en-US display at the CityArts Factory, which is en-US part of the Third Thursday Gallery Hop en-US downtown, characterized by food, drink en-US and live entertainment on the streets. We en-US were also mesmerized by the appearance of en-US the Corona Cigar Company & Downtown en-US Crown Lounge just down the street, the en-US largest such establishment either of us had en-US ever seen (and neither of us smoke cigars). en-US The beautiful bank of wooden Nicaraguan en-US rocking chairs outside tempt passersby to en-US take a seat, while the intoxicating aromas en-US and rhythm of Latin Music wafting from en-US the doors lure them inside. Afterward we en-US walked a couple blocks away to what was en-US the famous Church Street Station nighten-US -en-US clubbing district in the 1970s and 80s and en-US from what Disney originally modeled its en-US now-defunct Pleasure Island club district en-US on (Now part of Disney Springs). You can en-US still find a number of restaurants and clubs en-US along Church Street, as well as one of the en-US downtown areas Sunrail stops, the regions en-US light-rail system similar to South Floridas en-US Tri-Rail service. Here you can board the en-US train to go as far south as Downtown en-US Kissimmee in Osceola County and as forth en-US northwest as Deland in Volusia County. en-US On our second morning, we walked en-US across the Veranda courtyard to Washingen-US -en-US ton Street, the brick-paved avenue that en-US deadends on either side of Lake Eola. The en-US section south of the lake is lined with cozy en-US restaurants, taverns, unique boutiques and en-US upscale hair salons. If you bring Fido or Fifi en-US with you, you can even drop him or her off en-USfor a bit of canine pampering at Woof Gang en-US Bakery & Grooming. The ambience of en-US brick yesteryear also carries over onto en-US nearby Summerlin Avenue, home to more en-US restaurants and boutiques. en-US For lunch our second day we decided to en-US board the Lymmo to head to The Boheme en-US restaurant, part of the Grand Bohemian en-US Hotel in Downtown Orlando, propelled by en-US our culinary memories of its sister en-US restaurant in Celebration a couple of years en-US ago. Here Chef Laurent Hollaender did not en-US disappoint, having delighted diners here for en-US the last seven years. en-US We started out with an appetizer of en-US stone-oven baked naan bread topped with en-US fresh garlic, basil oil and Asiago cheese and en-US accompanied by a bowl of hummus. For en-US Glorias main dish, she ordered Chef en-US Hollaenders Seafood Cake packed with bits en-US of lobster, crab and salmon and served with en-US grilled asparagus, sweet potato fries and a en-US roasted tomato aioli. I ordered one of the en-US daily specials, the Shrimp Po-Boy (after all en-US Im from Louisiana!) which was served on en-US very yummy grilled French bread and en-US accompanied by some of the best French en-US fries Ive had in recent memory. en-US We ended our lunch with two different en-US desserts: I opted for the more healthien-US -en-US er-sounding Pineapple Sorbet (made with a en-US touch of tequila and served with a coconut en-US florentine cookie), while Gloria enjoyed the en-US Apple Galette, a French puff pastry filled en-US with fresh apples and topped with vanilla en-US bean ice cream (yeah, hers was really en-US decadent!). We both enjoyed the mysterien-US -en-US ous and enchanting atmosphere created en-US here by the interplay of red and dark colors en-US and wall paintings, which made us feel as if en-US we were dining in the Moulin Rouge. en-US Located directly across the street from the en-US Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, en-US The Boheme is perfect for either a pre-en-US show dinner or after-show nightcap. Also en-US nearby is the Amway Center and the citys en-US new soccer venue, the Orlando City en-US Stadium.en-US Our last evening in Downtown Orlando, en-US we once again walked to Washington Street en-US to visit Island Time, a beer and wine bar en-US housed in one of the areas historic homes. en-US Located directly across the street from the en-US main entrance to The Veranda, Island Time en-US is rumored to serve the best Key Lime pie en-US in Orlando and a very unique drink called en-US Popmosa, which is a glass of champagne en-US with a gourmet popsicle floating inside. Im en-US basically a teetotaler so I opted for the en-US mango flavor of one of these and Gloria en-US chose a craft strawberry Abita Beer (also en-US from Louisiana!), while we snacked on the en-US Cheese Plate of sharp aged merlot cheddar, en-US Irish Dubliner cheese, an olive Giardiniera en-US mix, roasted almonds, dried dates and en-US crackers. Here we sat on a comfortable en-US couch in the air conditioning and watched en-US the patrons come and go on a busy Friday en-US night. At one point it seemed we were the en-US only ones the bartenders didnt know by en-US name and give a hug too, reminding us en-US both of the coffee shop set on the Friends en-US TV set. And although we didnt have en-US another Orlando experience to compare en-US the cheesecake to, the Island Time version en-US made by owner Audrey Davila was indeed en-US worth the visit. Before heading back to our en-US lodgings, we walked the short two blocks to en-US Lake Eola to catch the 9:30 light show at the en-US fountain and people-watch before retiring en-US for the night.en-US Our final morning in Orlando we en-US jumped in the car (for the first time since en-US our arrival!) and drove to the Holy Land en-US Experience, the only Orlando area en-US attraction thats a 10-minute drive from en-US downtown. This Bible-story-based theme en-US park originally created by late televangelists en-US Paul and Jan Crouch in 2002 has really en-US undergone a lot of changes since the last en-US time we visited almost three years ago. A en-US new artistic director has totally revamped en-US the live performances with new themes and en-US imbued the dramatizations with a much en-US more operatic feel. The main venue, The en-US Church Of All Nations, hosts the main en-US storyline of a group of early Christians en-US forced to hide in the Roman catacombs and en-US the different stories they tell through en-US flashbacks. The show is divided into four en-US acts, which are timed with intermisen-US -en-US sion-like breaks to visit the smaller adjacent en-US venues where some of the same actors en-US perform more up-close and personal scenes en-US related to the main storyline. In the past, en-US we found it difficult to see all the shows at en-US Holy Land Experience due to timing en-US constraints, but the new changes made it en-US possible for us to see everything in an en-US enjoyable and orderly fashion. en-US Downtown Orlando lies less than two en-US hours from the heart of the Treasure Coast en-US via the Florida Turnpike. en-USThornton Park offers historic charm in Orlando WEEKEND WANDERER en-USDONALD RODRIGUE en-USIf you goen-USThe Boheme restaurant, 325 S. en-US 18 en-USgood for $3,000 discount on any car in his en-US inventory. This is very common for online, en-US direct mail, and TV ads too. Federal law en-US requires new cars to have a price sticker on en-US the window named the Monroney label. A en-US discount from this suggested retail price en-US gives you a fair basis for comparison. en-US Unfortunately, most car dealers today, en-US increase the suggested retail price substanen-US -en-US tially with the use of an addendum to the en-US Monroney sticker often referred to as a en-US Market Adjustment Addendum. This en-US adjustment can be several thousands of en-US dollars. Be sure you know what the asking en-US price is for the car when you have been en-US offered a big discount.en-US Ill sell you the car for $100 over my en-US cost. The salesman will show you the en-US invoice of the car and add $100. The invoice en-US price of a car is NOT THE TRUE COST. en-US The dealer invoice contains thousands of en-US dollars in hidden rebates, holdbacks, en-US advertising kick-backs.The manufacturers en-US are colluding with the dealers in this en-US deception to raise the advertised and actual en-US selling price of cars.Any car dealer would en-US be delighted if he could sell every car at the en-US factory invoice amounthed make a en-US fortune.en-US The best protection from all the above is en-US to find a car dealer that you can trust. I en-USwant to thank all the workers of America en-US and Canada for giving us the national en-US holiday of Labor Day.en-US Yes, it started in Canada. Labor Day can en-US be traced back to a Canadian union strike en-US parade in 1872. Unionization was considen-US -en-US ered a crime at the time, so the parade en-US prompted Prime Minister John A. Macdonen-US -en-US ald to repeal the anti-union laws, and a en-US celebration followed. en-US Soon afterward the United States adopted en-US the holiday, celebrating it in September. The en-US long Labor Day weekend of fun, picnics and en-US food became a signal of the end of summer en-US and going back to school. en-US Growing up in Florida, I can remember en-US hating to see Labor Day weekend come, en-US because it meant the end of summer fun en-US and jobs. No more corn dogs, cotton candy en-US and snow cones, or going swimming or en-US fishing. It was time to get ready to go back en-US to school mature, learn and one day en-US enter the work force. That was many years en-US ago. en-US Today, like millions of Americans, I look en-US forward to the mini-vacation from work, en-US but it always brings back memories of my en-US childhood growing up in Florida near the en-US oceans and seeing it every day and enjoying en-US its pleasures. One day when I retire, I can go en-US back to my childhood pleasures and eat a en-US corn dog anytime I want, watch the sunset en-US over the ocean, and when Labor Day comes en-US it will be more enjoyable because every day en-US after it will still be Labor Day! Funny how en-US life goes full circle. en-US Now let us talk about food. No, I am not en-US giving you a corndog recipe. That would be en-US too easy. Buy a buttermilk pancake mix and en-US follow directions. Add a tablespoon of cornen-US -en-US meal. Pat dry the hot dogs and dip in batter en-US and fry until golden brown. On the other en-US hand, just buy them frozen. en-US The real food on Labor Day has turned en-US into a weekend of BBQ and everyone en-US cooking their favorite foods over fire. Here en-US is a recipe that is surprisingly good. en-US Enjoy your Labor Day weekend.
