Currently more en-US than half of all our judges worked as crimien-US -en-US nal prosecutors. Although criminal law en-US experience is important, the responsibilities en-US of circuit judges include much more than en-US criminal cases. Large civil cases, divorces, en-US injuries, juvenile issues and estates are all on en-US the docket. This en-US cycle cannot be broken by the judiciary en-US alone. There are diversionary programs in en-US other jurisdictions that are having a positive en-US effect on our youth. I asked you, our en-US law enforcement officers that patrol Florida en-US roads, in my original letter below, to ticket en-US those driving cars with dangerous safety en-US recalls. My reasoning behind this request en-US was to get the attention of the legislators en-US that have been ignoring this danger to en-US Florida motorists. I reasoned that the en-US outrage by motorists, most of whom also en-US VOTE, would frighten our legislators into en-US the action they should have taken two years en-US agoMAKE IT ILLEGAL TO SELL A en-US VEHICLE WITH A DANGEROUS en-US SAFETY RECALL.en-US However, I see no reason why every en-US Florida motorist shouldnt be advised by the en-US Florida Department of HighwaySafety& en-US Motor Vehicles (FLDHSMV) if their car has en-US anunfixed dangerous safety recall. This can en-US be done simply by computer. The FLDen-US -en-US HSMV has the name, address and VIN en-US number of every Florida driver. By running en-US this information through the database of en-US the National Highway Traffic Safety en-US Association (NHTSA), every Florida en-US motorist driving a dangerous car can be en-US notified by certified return receipt mail en-US within a few days. All Florida drivers should en-US then be required to show proof of that the en-US safety recall has been fixed before the state en-US will renew their license and registration. en-US Earl Stewarten-US Since Modified as Shown Aboveen-US Open Letter to all Florida Law Enforceen-US -en-US ment Officers Ticket all vehicles with open en-US safety recalls:en-US Dear Florida law enforcement officer,en-US If youre with the Florida Highway Patrol, en-US County Sheriffs Department, or local city en-US police, youre empowered by Florida law to en-US issue citations and warnings to unsafe en-US vehicles on Floridas roads. You typically en-US exercise this duty by citing drivers of en-US vehicles with faulty tail, brake, and head en-US lights, unsafe tires, or even a noncompliant en-US license plate frame.en-US My suggestion to you is to prioritize en-US citing drivers of vehicles with dangerous en-US safety recalls, especially Takata airbags. en-US There are more deaths and injuries from en-US defective Takata airbags in Florida than all en-US the other 49 states. This is because of en-US Floridas above average heat and humidity en-US which causes the airbag inflator to en-US EXLODE, sending shrapnel throughout the en-US inside of the vehicle, killing and maiming en-US passengers. Furthermore, SEVENTY-FIVE en-US PERCENT of the cars on the roads with en-US safety recalls have never been repaired. en-US Most of these dangerous cars are older and en-US are being driven by a 2nd, 3rd, 4th or later en-US owners. The manufacturers of these cars are en-US unable to contact most of these endangered en-US drivers because of old, inaccurate addresses. en-US Theres also the apathy of many drivers to en-US take the time to bring their car in for repair. en-US Lastly, thousands of vehicles on the road, en-US especially those with defective Takata en-US airbags, have NO FIX AVAILABLE. The en-US huge Takata airbag recall demand has en-US exceeded the manufacturers capacity to en-US build the airbag inflators. Some vehicle en-US owners are waiting over a year for a en-US replacement airbag.en-US Your squad cars are equipped with en-US sophisticated computers which can en-US cross-reference the license plate number of en-US any vehicle on the roads and display the en-US VIN, vehicle identification number, aka en-US serial number. You have direct access to the en-US National Highway Traffic Associations en-US (NHTSA) database (www.SaferCar.gov) en-US This source, with the VIN, tells you if the en-US car youre driving behind has an unfixed en-US Takata air bag or any other dangerous safety en-US recall. The NHTSA data base will also tell en-US you IF there is a fix available for this recall.en-US I suggest that you first issue a warning to en-US all drivers of vehicles with unfixed safety en-US recalls, giving them 7 days to have the en-US vehicle repaired; if they fail to comply, issue en-US a suspension of their drivers license. If the en-US NHTSA database tells you that the safety en-US recall has no fix available, you should en-US require the driver to drive immediately to en-US the nearest dealership of his vehicles make 927 NE Jensen Beach Blvd. 772.334.2151Monday Friday 10am 5pm Saturday 10 am 3 pm www.jewelrydesignstudio.net Share the Beach! $899 Follow-up to Florida Law Enforcement ON CARS en-USEARL STEWART en-USSeeen-US en-US STEWARTen-US page 7

en-US 4 en-USTREASURE COAST Publix supermaren-US -en-US kets are cracking down on people who falseen-US -en-US ly claim their dogs are service animals in en-US order to bring them into the store.en-US The chain recently posted signs at all of en-US their locations that read: For food safety en-US reasons, only service animals that are specifen-US -en-US ically trained to aid a person with disabilien-US-en-US ties are permitted within the store. Service en-US animals are not permitted to sit or ride in en-US shopping carts. Thank you for your help!en-US Publix Media and Community Relations en-US Manager Brian West told Hometown News en-US Our policy on service animals in our stores en-US has not changed. In an effort to raise awareen-US -en-US ness and understanding, the decision was en-US made to post this note as a reminder. Publix en-US is an associate-owned company that cares en-US about its customers, and it is important for en-US us to create a pleasant shopping environen-US -en-US ment.en-US There is a federal law that generally goven-US-en-US erns those who truly need their dogs for en-US assistance. The Americans with Disabilities en-US Act covers service animals, but not therapy en-US animals or emotional support animals.en-US Nicole Krauss, Publixs Miami communien-US -en-US ty relations manager, sent Hometown News en-US additional clarification: Under published en-US ADA regulations, Publix can only ask two en-US questions regarding animals in the store: 1. en-US Is the animal a service animal? If Yes, 2. en-US What task does the animal perform? Manen-US -en-US agers have to make a decision based on the en-US responses received. There are potential civil en-US penalties under the ADA if Publix wrongen-US -en-US fully excludes a true service animal. Howen-US -en-US ever, service animals will not be permitted en-US to ride in our shopping carts due to food en-US safety and sanitation concerns.en-US The Dept. of Justice expands on those two en-US questions store employees are allowed to en-US ask: Staff cannot ask about the persons disen-US-en-US ability, require medical documentation, en-US require a special identification card or trainen-US -en-US ing documentation for the dog, or ask that en-US the dog demonstrate its ability to perform en-US the work or task.en-US Comments on the Publix Facebook page en-US indicate that most shoppers approve of the en-US signs. Many posted that they fear carts used en-US to transport animals around the store are en-US not adequately cleaned before being used en-US again. Others took the opportunity to critien-US -en-US cize those who pretend their animals are en-US service dogs just so they can bring them into en-US the store, and into other public places that en-US dont normally allow animals.en-US According to the interpretation of the en-US ADA adopted in 2011 by the U.S. Departen-US-en-US ment of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Disen-US -en-US ability Rights Section, A service animal is a en-US dog that is individually trained to do work en-US or perform tasks for a person with a disabilen-US-en-US ity. As of 2011, only dogs are recognized as en-US service animals under titles II and III of the en-US ADA.en-US Most public places must permit service en-US animals to accompany people with disabilien-US -en-US ties in all areas where members of the public en-US are allowed to go.en-US The ADA regulations state that Service en-US animals are defined as dogs that are individen-US -en-US ually trained to do work or perform tasks en-US for people with disabilities. Examples of en-US such work or tasks include guiding people en-US who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, en-US pulling a wheelchair, alerting and protecting en-US a person who is having a seizure, reminding en-US a person with mental illness to take preen-US-en-US scribed medications, calming a person with en-US Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) en-US during an anxiety attack, or performing en-US other duties. Service animals are working en-US animals, not pets. The work or task a dog en-US has been trained to provide must be directly en-US related to the persons disability. Dogs whose en-US sole function is to provide comfort or emoen-US -en-US tional support do not qualify as service anien-US -en-US mals under the ADA.en-US Grocery stores or restaurants that sell or en-US prepare food must allow service animals in en-US public areas even if local health codes proen-US -en-US hibit animals.en-US The Humane Society of Vero Beach and en-US Indian River County has no problem with en-US the Publix policy, instead expressing conen-US-en-US cern about people choosing to leave dogs in en-US cars.en-US While The Humane Society hopes pet en-US parents will honor Publixs policy, we also en-US hope they will do whats best and safest for en-US their animals by leaving their pets at home en-US and not leaving them in the car, said Janet en-US Winikoff, Director of Education for HSVB. en-US Leaving animals unattended in vehicles can en-US result in dangerous situations such as heaten-US -en-US stroke. In just a matter of minutes, a vehicle en-US with the windows cracked can heat up to en-USover 120 degrees even during Floridas coolen-US -en-US er months. And of course, with the windows en-US down, theres always the possibility of pet en-US theft.en-US Its equally dangerous to leave pets alone en-US with the cars engine running since the anien-US -en-US mal can accidentally knock the vehicle out en-US of park or the engine could unexpectedly en-US stall.en-US Service Dog Certifications, an organizaen-US -en-US tion that works to smooth the difficulties en-US encountered by people with a genuine need en-US for service animals, has expressed frustraen-US -en-US tion with those who try to pass off emoen-US -en-US tional support animals as service dogs.en-US Our goal is to help reduce abuse of the en-US ADA by requiring our registrants to underen-US -en-US stand the laws, the organization says on its en-US website. Intentionally misrepresenting an en-US animal as a service animal for any reason is en-US not only unethical, it is also in violation of en-US federal and local laws. Service Dog Certifien-US -en-US cations does not endorse the use of fake seren-US -en-US vice animals in any capacity.en-US The Dept. of Justice adds that people with en-US service animals have a responsibility to keep en-US them safely under control:en-US Under the ADA, service animals must be en-US harnessed, leashed, or tethered, unless these en-US devices interfere with the service animals en-US work or the individuals disability prevents en-US using these devices. In that case, the individen-US -en-US ual must maintain control of the animal en-US through voice, signal, or other effective conen-US -en-US trols. Christopher G. Where is Congress and what are en-US they doing about the president's latest repreen-US -en-US hensible mandate that the ACLU take on en-US responsibilities in this sinful chaos brought en-US about by Trump's shameful treatment of en-US immigrant families seeking asylum?en-US Because this is written days before it will en-US be published, the matter may be moot, as en-US wiser, more stable minds may have again en-US pulled the president from the precipice of en-US disaster.en-US The president's unlawful actions in blanen-US-en-US ket refusal of asylum to thousands of our en-US desperate neighbors to our south, and his en-US zero tolerance stance on immigration has en-US torn families apart and done irreparable en-US damage to them. A product of a Christian en-US (Catholic) education, I heard early and en-US often, "The family is the basic unit of socien-US -en-US ety." Because of the current president's disen-US -en-US regard for any people or persons who do not en-US meet his criteria for acceptance to his limiten-US -en-US ed and pigment dominated ideas, he has en-US treated people, running from unbearable en-US oppression and danger as less than his equal. en-US True, the president is not their equal, en-US because he has been blessed with American en-US citizenship and a charmed life. Can you see en-US him fleeing the conditions in Honduras or en-US Guatemala with his family? Instead of en-US devoting time and resources to fix the proben-US -en-US lem caused entirely by his prejudice and en-US incompetence, he continues to bluster about en-US his importance and plows ahead with his en-US dictator regime.en-US The truth of the two party system is evien-US -en-US dent: whoever has the majority is in charge, en-US today, that is Trump and his Republican en-US party. In the 60 years I have had the responen-US-en-US sibility and honor to be an American voter, I en-US have never seen such continual obstruction en-US of justice of our Democracy. There are en-US intelligent men and woman patriots, why en-US haven't they stood up to this despot?en-USAlgaeen-USThe algae that has taken over our wateren-US -en-US ways has reached epic proportions. If you go en-US over either of the Palm City bridges, you can en-US actually see the brown sludge which is killen-US -en-US ing our wildlife and is detrimental to the en-US health of everyone of us exposed to it everyen-US -en-US day. Property values are in jeopardy and our en-US quality of life is at risk. I felt strongly enough en-US to go to the Roosevelt bridge and hold up a en-US sign with about 100 other people who are en-US fed up with the politics of this nightmare. en-US Please educate yourselves before you go to en-US the voting booth and do NOT vote for anyen-US -en-US one who is beholden to big sugar. Thank you.en-USCharter schoolsen-USI write to thank you for the coverage on en-US charter schools (Martin County edition, en-US July 13). The article put to rest some misunen-US -en-US derstandings about them: a.) they are public en-US schools (not private schools as objectors en-US stated), b.) the already approved Treasure en-US Coast Classical Academy is not designed as en-US a religious school.en-US We know the school board approved the en-US creation of a Barney Charter School Initiaen-US-en-US tive back in June. Were a comparison to be en-US made on the effectiveness of charter schools en-US it needs to be done on the Barney Initiative en-US type schools throughout the country. I am en-US sure the results would demonstrate the en-US rigor, complexity and breadth of their curen-US -en-US riculum would surpass that of public en-US schools in general.en-US An objector states he does not want his en-US money spent on classical education. For en-US anyone to refuse a classical education choice en-US is perplexing, to say the least. And thank en-US goodness the school is not forced to adhere en-US to the failed Common Core which is being en-US pulled from school districts in many parts of en-US the country for its one size fits all, lock-en-US step approach to teaching.en-US I commend the reportage on this importen-US -en-US ant topic as it presented both sides fairly. en-US Parents look to charter schools as a means of en-US offering them a choice for their children. en-USWhy anyone want to deny them a free en-US choice in a liberty loving society?en-USGreyhound racing amendmenten-USMy rave is for the Constitution Revision en-US Committee who has given voters the opporen-US -en-US tunity to phase out greyhound dog racing! en-US After many years of failed attempts at en-US reform by the Legislature, including banen-US -en-US ning anabolic steroids, requiring injury en-US reporting and removing dog racing from en-US the gambling industry, the voters will now en-US have a say in the matter. The grievances with en-US this industry are many including confineen-US-en-US ment in stacked metal cages not large en-US enough for them to fully stand up for more en-US than 20 hours a day, positive testing for en-US cocaine and according to state records, a en-US dog dying on average every three days. This en-US is unacceptable to Floridians who love their en-US dogs. Additionally, its a burden on the State en-US costing the State between $1 million to $3.3 en-US million annually according to a study comen-US -en-US missioned by the Legislature. Please vote en-US YES on Amendment 13 on November 6! en-USPolice, please readen-USOn Green River Parkway between Walton en-US Road and Jensen Beach Boulevard the en-US violent road rage thats constantly happenen-US -en-US ing driving on this road on a daily basis has en-US got to stop. Clearly, it should be en-US illegal to sell a car with a dangerous safety en-US recall, but our governor and lawmakers will en-US not act. At the very least, it should be en-US required that the buyer of a car with a en-US dangerous safety recall be advised prior to en-US sale, this has not been done either. Thereen-US -en-US fore, thousands of used cars with dangerous en-US safety recalls are being sold to unsuspecting en-US Floridians daily.en-US I believe you have the authority and the en-US responsibility to take dangerous vehicles off en-US the road and you can exercise this authority en-US under our existing laws without waiting any en-US longer for the politicians and regulators to en-US act. Furthermore, I believe your action will en-US put the pressure on the politicians, regulaen-US -en-US tors, auto manufacturers and car dealers to en-US do the right thing. Every time en-US someone says that to me I cant help en-US but picture in my mind computers all over en-US the world stopped in their tracks and en-US displaying some type of error. Email en-US messages no longer bouncing from node to en-US node, Netflix accounts standing still with a en-US hourglass spinning and turning, Google en-US searches stalled and coming up empty. en-US What exactly do you mean the internet en-US is down? I ask (usually while looking at a en-US fully functioning internet connection at my en-US desk). I know that people count on the en-US internet for so much but when one facet of en-US the internet stops working does it really en-US mean that the whole internet is down? No, en-US not quite. I imagine its kind of like dialing a en-US phone number and getting a fast busy signal en-US or a message saying that the number you en-US are trying to reach is not available. Does en-US that mean the phone system is down? No, en-US its just a problem connecting to that phone en-US number. Or another way to look at it is en-US seeing a Road Closed sign at the end of en-US the street. Does that mean the entire en-US highway system is down? No, not quite. en-US When someone calls me and says that the en-US internet is down I know I have to do some en-US question asking to determine exactly what en-US they mean by that statement. Just what en-US problem are they having exactly to lead en-US them to believe that the internet is down?en-US Most of the time, after asking a few en-US simple questions and listening closely to the en-US answers, the problem is one website that the en-US caller is trying to access. They click a en-US shortcut and the hourglass starts to twirl en-US until it finally times out and displays an en-US error message that the page cannot be en-US displayed but does this mean that the en-US internet is really down? en-US I usually ask them to try accessing en-US another site if they were trying to access en-US Yahoo.com and got that message I ask them en-US to try Google. If they were trying to access en-US Google then I ask them to try Yahoo. en-US Usually they are unable to access one page en-US but are able to access the other showing en-US clearly that the internet is indeed up. Or en-US maybe its an email problem they try to en-US access email but get an error message. Sure en-US I know its frustrating when something en-US people rely on every day suddenly stops en-US working but to declare that the internet is en-US down goes a little overboard as the en-US problem is usually not as severe. en-US So, how does one figure out what is really en-US going on? Well there are a lot of tools and en-US techniques out there that can be used to en-US discover the extent of the problem and one en-US of my favorite tools can be used to check en-US the status of a particular site and that tool is en-US called DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com. en-US The idea behind the site is that it is en-US sometimes difficult to determine if a en-US problem accessing a particular web address en-US is a local problem (that is a problem with en-US the local computer from which you are en-US trying to access the site) or a problem with en-US the web address you are trying to reach.en-US When you have a problem accessing a en-US web address try going to en-US www.DownForEven-US-en-US eryoneOrJustMe.com en-US (no hyphens). If the en-US site opens then you know right off the bat en-US that the internet is not down but rather en-US you are having a problem accessing a site en-US (kind of like dialing a phone number and en-US getting a fast busy signal).en-US If en-US DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.comen-US does en-US open, then type in the web address you are en-US trying to reach and hit enter, en-US DownForEven-US-en-US eryoneOrJustMe.comen-US will try to access that en-US site and display either Its just you if the en-US site is able to access the site or it will display en-US Its not just you if it cant access the site.en-US That little bit of information is invaluable en-US when it comes to troubleshooting a en-US connectivity issue with a web address.en-US DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com acts en-US like a friend you can call to ask if they can en-US access a particular web site. If it says the en-US problem is just you then you can aim your en-US trouble shooting efforts in the direction of en-US your machine. If the message comes back en-US saying its not just you then you know en-US there is nothing you can do about it from en-US your end and to just wait. That can save a en-US lot of wasted time troubleshooting a en-US problem you have no control over. en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. en-US 10 en-USbusiness owner or a visitor comes to our en-US downtown, they will immediately get an en-US impression of one of Americas most beautien-US -en-US ful cities because they are seeing a beautiful, en-US well-maintained downtown.en-US Ms. Lanese gathered input from the two en-US downtown organizations whose members en-US wanted to ensure the expanded BID -to be en-US renamed the Downtown Improvement Disen-US -en-US trict -would be more equitable and include en-US more downtown properties benefiting from en-US the area improvements.en-US We assessed all the areas that were beneen-US -en-US fiting from the service, that it be very specifen-US-en-US ic and consistent with what the funds are en-US used for and be predictable so it could be en-US used as a budgeting tool as well, Ms. Lanese en-US added. Because of those discussions, we en-US came back with some recommendations. en-US The most notable one was the recommendaen-US -en-US tion to expand the area to include the broaden-US-en-US er definition of the downtown and be conen-US-en-US sistent and assess both sides of the streets. It en-US also recommended going to a square-footen-US -en-US age assessment rather than how much the en-US building is worth. They thought that was a en-US more equitable path.en-US Ms. Lanese also emphasized the city en-US would allow exemptions for homesteaded en-US properties or specific governmental or en-US non-profit uses on the parcels through an en-US online application process. That was not en-US enough to satisfy downtown resident en-US Armand Pascual, whose property failed to en-US show up as homesteaded on a map depicten-US -en-US ing the new DID.en-US I do have a homestead exemption on the en-US property and I have had it for 39 years, he en-US said. All of the residential property owners en-US that I have spoken to are totally against this en-US levy; we dont want it, we dont need it and en-US we can get along without it. Our area is kept en-US clean by the people that live there. The only en-US dirt and junk thats in our area is brought in en-US from the bar district. These are the areas en-US that need cleaning.en-US Another downtown homeowner, Marcia en-US Regan, also opposed being included in the en-US DID because her condo was not her primary en-US residence and would not carry the homeen-US -en-US stead exemption from the new tax burden.en-US The address that Im speaking about is en-US not my home, its a condo that I own in that en-US area at 101 S.E. Ocean Blvd., she said. Im en-US opposed to the increase for increased seren-US -en-US vices in this area, and I dont think its necesen-US -en-US sary. en-US The owner of the downtown Forum en-US Building, John Maiucci, said he understood en-US the citys need for additional revenue but en-US insisted he already paid sufficient taxes on en-US the property and didnt need the additional en-US cleaning services and maintenance his new en-US inclusion in the District would provide.en-US The Forum Building carries a combined en-US city/county ad valoram tax bill approaching en-US $18,000 a year, he said. By any objective en-US measure, that is a substantial tax burden. en-US The city portion is about $4,700. The seren-US -en-US vices that you are mentioning, in all franken-US -en-US ness, the Forum Building doesnt need those en-US services. Way before there was a revitalized en-US downtown, way before these services were en-US proposed, the Forum was fully leased in the en-US early 1980s and with few exceptions has en-US remained fully leased for over 30 years. I en-US dont need those services.en-US Commissioner Eula Clarke then pepen-US -en-US pered Ms. Lanese with questions about any en-US other negative responses shed received from en-US the 224 property owners who the city notien-US -en-US fied in advance of the July 23 hearing. en-US Surprisingly I have only heard from en-US three people, Ms. Lanese responded. Mr. en-US Pascual, who spent some time in my office en-US and expressed his concerns; the second, en-US Jimmy Dirks, who is the original board en-US president of Stuart Main Street and only en-US asked for clarification on what the use [of en-US the funds] would be; and one email from a en-US resident outside the area who had a number en-US of questions about how it would be used as en-US well.en-US Upon discovering from City Attorney en-US Michael Mortell that the public would have en-US no other chance to opine on the issue due to en-US rapidly approaching deadlines with the tax en-US collectors office, Commissioner Clark then en-US had a more blunt question for him.en-US And theres no way now for a property en-US owner to say I want to opt out of this little en-US district extension? she asked.en-US The attorneys answer provoked a round en-US of laughter from the dais.en-US From the standpoint of opting in or opten-US -en-US ing out, Mr. Mortell said, I think wed all en-US probably opt out of our taxes. I know I en-US would.en-US In spite of the opposition, at least two en-US members of the public did speak out in en-US favor of the BID expansion. One of those en-US was California Avenue business owner Mike en-US Meier, who said he also understood the conen-US -en-US cerns of downtown residents.en-US Those of us along Colorado Avenue have en-US for sometime felt like weve been kind of left en-USbehind in the focus in the Downtown Busien-US -en-US ness Association, he said. I think some en-US more services and more attention are en-US well-deserved out in our area, but I also hear en-US and share in some of the concern among en-US residents in this area who are not necessarily en-US themselves interested in trying to increase en-US the curb appeal of their neighborhood for en-US the benefit of more traffic and more retail en-US sales and more folks coming in to eat and en-US drink. So perhaps this should be slightly en-US renegotiated in a way to think about how it en-US is being used for the benefit of businesses en-US over residents.en-US Stuart Main Street President Nik Schroth en-US also backed the proposal, emphasizing that en-US residents downtown did have the method of en-US homestead exemption in which to opt out.en-US I just wanted to let the Commission en-US know that Stuart Main Street and the DBA en-US are in favor of this last proposal, and as you en-US know, those boards are made up of a lot of en-US the folks who operate businesses and offices en-US downtown, he said. The homestead en-US exemption was intended for the exemption en-US that provided those residents who were en-US maybe grandfathered in the Homestead secen-US-en-US tor of the downtown.en-US Mayor Kelli Glass-Leighton said expanden-US-en-US ing the BID was definitely vital but felt the en-US city was rushing the process in order to salen-US -en-US vage the original agreement resolution that en-US would expire at the end of the current fiscal en-US year. en-US I just feel that its going too quickly, she en-US said. When were talking about levying a en-US tax on people, I think there should be more en-US from our part, more involvement. I think we en-US should do it more in a methodical manner, en-US especially when you are talking about some en-US businesses that dont have the ability to opt POOL REPAIRS POOL SUPPLIES WATER TESTING POOL EQUIPMENTPRIMO CERAMIC GRILLSTIKI BARS POOL/YARD SIGNS SUNSAILS LOCAL INDEPENDENT1114 NE Jensen Beach Blvd Jensen Beach, FL772-444-3213 Chlorine 2.5 Gal ~ 2 for $8Must present coupon ~ One coupon per household ~ Expires 9/31/2018REGISTER TO WIN A FREE XVAC POOL CLEANERDrawing on August 31, 2018 REVERSE MORTGAGE WILMER FLORESFinance ProfessionalNO MONTHLY PAYMENTSImprove Your Lifestyle And Enjoy RetirementCall for more information772-207-4599 LENDER BID en-USFrom page 1en-US Seeen-US en-US BIDen-US, page 11

After en-US that motion passed unanimously, he made en-US another motion directing staff to work en-US with the downtown business organizaen-US-en-US tions and hold at least one workshop with en-US them and downtown residents so that we en-US can find out what the needs are and what en-US their thoughts are and bring that back to en-US us at a future date. That motion also en-US passed unanimously. en-US While Mr. Pascual disagreed with the en-US second motion and said he would not en-US work with these people under any condien-US -en-US tions, Mr. Meier was pumped by the idea. en-US I think the idea of doing this public en-US outreach and getting the workshop in en-US place is great, he said. There are a lot of en-US businesses around that are not part of Stuen-US -en-US art Main Street or not part of DBA and en-US our businesses should be involved in this en-US process. 2201 SE Indian St., Stuart772-221-0627 www.VerticalsPlusStuart.com rf nt nb R E A D E R S 1C H O I C E 2015 2016 2015 2016 Family owned and operated since 1989 Open Monday-Friday 9-4rfn rffbbEnhance your home with the distinctive look of designer window treatments, custom-made and professionally installed for you.nf nf fn ft 2017 2017 C H O I C E R E A D E R S Animal Medical HospitalDr. Lynnly Miller DVM 825 NW Dixie Hwy Stuart, FL 34994(772) 692-0611 www.animalmedhospital.com FREE Initial Visit$85 Dogs Package: 3 yr Rabies, Distemper/Parvo Combo, Heartworm test, deworming and office visit. $49 Cat Package: 3 yr Rabies, FVRCP, deworming and office visit $25 Micro Chipping TLC for your BFF Community notes en-USFree community breastfeeding en-US education program on Aug. 17en-USThe Florida Department of Health in en-US Martin is joining with partners to present a en-US special community education program in en-US recognition of National Breastfeeding en-US month in August.en-US The public is invited to Breastfeeding: en-US The Foundation of Life on Friday, Aug. 17, en-US from 10 a.m. to noon at the Childrens Seren-US -en-US vices Council in Stuart. Mothers enjoy a close bond en-US with their baby, quicker post pregnancy en-US weight loss and lower risks of breast and en-US ovarian cancer.en-US To reach the goal of exclusive breastfeeden-US-en-US ing for at least six months, mothers need en-US supportive work policies, infant and child-en-US care at or near the workplace and private en-US facilities for expressing and storing breasten-US -en-US milk. en-US 13 Just for Kids Back To School2018-2019 en-USFor the more than 6 million children in en-US the U.S. living with asthma, gearing up for en-US another school year involves much more en-US than picking out a new pencil case and en-US backpack. Accounting for nearly 14 million en-US lost school days each year, asthma is one of en-US the main illness-related reasons that stuen-US -en-US dents miss school.en-US With better asthma management, chilen-US -en-US dren are able to feel healthy, safe and ready en-US to learn! For a full toolkit and free resources en-US from the American Lung Association, visit en-US Lung.org/asthma-in-schools.en-US To get ready for a successful school year, en-US the American Lung Association recomen-US-en-US mends this back-to-school checklist for en-US families with asthma:en-US 1. Schedule a check-up with your childs en-US physician. Use your yearly check-up to creen-US -en-US ate or revise your Asthma Action Plan, en-US check the effectiveness of asthma medicaen-US -en-US tion and dosage, get prescriptions for back-en-US up medications for your school nurse and en-US coaches, as well as ensure your child knows en-US how to use his or her asthma medicines.en-US 2. Assess your childs readiness to self-caren-US -en-US ry medication. All 50 states have laws that en-US allow children to self-carry and use their en-US asthma inhalers at school. Use the Amerien-US -en-US can Lung Associations Self-Carry Assessen-US -en-US ment Tool to see if your child is ready to en-US carry and self-administer asthma medicaen-US-en-US tion. The assessment tool will help parents en-US create a plan for children not yet ready to en-US self-administer medication, as well as help en-US children learn the necessary skills throughen-US -en-US out the school year.en-US 3. Set up an appointment with your en-US school nurse. Remember to bring in your en-US updated Asthma Action Plan and back-up en-US medications. Take this time to sign all en-US required medical forms, discuss whether en-US your child can self-carry their own quick-reen-US -en-US lief inhaler, as well as deliver any special en-US instructions when it comes to physical en-US activities and asthma emergencies that may en-US happen during the school year. en-US 4. Hows the air in there? Take a moment en-US to talk to your childs teacher about asthma, en-US what triggers might bring on an attack and en-US what to do in an emergency -whether that en-US be to head directly to the school nurse or en-US use his or her quick-relief inhaler. This may en-US also be a great time to talk about the air en-US quality in the classroom. Mold, fragrances en-US and idling buses can all be asthma triggers en-US for your child.en-US 5. Introduce yourself to the PE teacher en-US and any coaches. Kids with asthma shouldnt en-US have to miss out on playing outside or paren-US -en-US ticipating in gym class. You can quickly put en-US teachers and coaches minds at ease by en-US talking about exercise-induced asthma, en-US ways to manage symptoms and what to do en-US in an emergency.en-US 6. Have fun! While it may take some proen-US -en-US active organizing at the start of the school en-US year, you are helping to ensure that your en-US child is safe and active throughout the en-US school day. Take a deep breath and enjoy a en-US healthy 2018-2019 school year! en-US Story courtesy of StatePointen-USBack-to-school checklist en-US for families with asthmaen-USFor Hometown Newsen-USnewsfp@hometownnewsol.comen-USWith each new school year comes a en-US brand-new set of subjects, books and teachen-US -en-US ers. It also means new technologies being en-US introduced into the classroom.en-US As students head back to school, here is a en-US look at the technologies that will support en-US STEAM (science, technology, engineering, en-US arts and math) learning this year.en-US Digital Art: Enter some art classes today en-US and you may find a dearth of paints, brushes en-US and charcoal. Today, art students can learn en-US the same painting, drawing and sculpting en-US techniques they previously would have en-US learned using traditional supplies, only with en-US digital tools instead. While the traditional en-US mediums arent completely going away any en-US time soon, todays students can benefit from en-US the versatility that cutting-edge tools supply, en-US from the time a project idea is conceived en-US through when the finished product is shared en-US with the world.en-US Visual Science: Whether its an anatomien-US -en-US cal diagram of the human heart or a map of en-US the Milky Way, every science teacher knows en-US that a pictures worth a thousand words, en-US particularly when its a sharp, clear picture. en-US Teachers and students are benefitting from en-US top of the line projection technology in en-US classrooms. The LampFree Projectors from en-US Casios Core Series, for example, have the en-US ability to project images and video wirelessen-US -en-US ly from smart phones, laptop computers and en-US tablets, expanding teachers ability to create en-US engaging lesson plans. Additionally, the en-US mercury-free Laser and LED hybrid light en-US source is energy-efficient, reducing power en-US consumption by up to 40 percent, a bonus en-US lesson in environmental stewardship.en-US Accessible Computer Science: Certain en-US innovations are helping students go beyond en-US just consuming technology. Apps abound en-US for independent learners, as well as educa en-US-en-US tors, to use in their classrooms to help comen-US -en-US puter science students of all ages and abilien-US-en-US ties to hone their coding skills. From en-US straight-forward instructional apps to those en-US that gamify the learning process, young en-US coders-in-training have a wealth of resourcen-US -en-US es at their fingertips.en-US Intuitive Music: New technology is en-US rocking the music education boat in an en-US effort to make learning an instrument more en-US intuitive. For example, Casios LK-265 is en-US outfitted with such tools as a Key Lighting en-US System, Voice Fingering Guide and Step-up en-US Lesson Sysen-US-en-US tem, en-US enabling en-US beginners to en-US learn built-en-US in songs at en-US their own en-US pace. Addien-US-en-US tionally, an en-US LCD display en-US makes masen-US -en-US tering music en-US notation en-US and correct en-US hand posien-US-en-US tioning en-US easy. Stuen-US-en-US dents dont en-US even have to wait for teacher feedback -the en-US keyboards have a Scoring System that evaluen-US-en-US ates performance.en-US In-Depth Math: Todays students are en-US getting a closer look at the inner workings en-US of mathematics than their predecessors, en-US thanks to new graphing calculators, such as en-US the fx-CG50 PRIZM and fx-CG500, which en-US offer expanded features, including the abilien-US -en-US ty to easily draw three dimensional graphs en-US such as planes, cylinders and spheres, and en-US view them from various angles to better en-US analyze their shapes. A cross-section option en-US and special zoom function allow students to en-US closely examine graphs for in-depth analysis en-US and an improved catalog function means en-US students can use commands more easily and en-US quickly.en-US As rapidly emerging technologies innoen-US -en-US vate education, its an exciting time to be a en-US student or teacher.en-US Story courtesy of StatePointen-USHow new technologies will support STEAM en-US learning this school year For Hometown News en-USnewsfp@hometownnewsol.comen-USPhoto courtesy of Monkey Business/stock.Adobe.com

en-US 20 I en-UShave people asking me all the time what en-US is the best method to cook food so it is en-US more nutritious. en-US To be honest, I never really gave it much en-US thought. I cook food the way I think it en-US should be cooked based on my culinary en-US training. Whats nutrition got to do with it?en-US Then I realized here we go again, another en-US cooking trend I need to know about. It en-US seems every few years the preparation of en-US food is affected by societies eating habits.en-US Years ago we were told fat is bad for us, en-US so everyone wanted low fat foods. Unfortuen-US -en-US nately sugar was used in low fat foods to en-US give it flavor. Then we were told sugar was en-US horrible, too late, the great majority of en-US processed foods have fructose or corn en-US syrup in them. en-US Then we were told dont eat processed en-US foods, eat fresh organic foods. Someone en-US forgot to tell the farmers who tried to en-US convert to organic and the fresh movement. en-US Farmers could not keep up. The price of en-US organic food products doubled, making en-US those items un-affordable for many en-US families. en-US The demand for different foods continen-US -en-US ued to grow with the increase of individuals en-US on vegetarian and vegan diets. Weve been en-US told to cut down on beef and eat more fish. en-US The trouble again is seafood is expensive en-US and not all of it is sustainable so we have en-US fish farms expanding. en-US Oh, by the way, we are told grass-fed beef en-US is OK. Guess what? All beef is grass fed, we en-US just decided to grain feed it to get fat cows en-US again. Chickens should be free range, en-US antibiotic and GMO free. They also should en-US be treated more humanely to help produce en-US healthier chicken products. en-US In the world of food, a great many things en-US are happening. It seems to me the problem en-US is people. We left our past traditions and en-US changed things too much. Now we are en-US going back to our past. We are finding out en-US fresh eggs off a farm taste better, chickens en-US were always free range and beef was always en-US grass fed. We were not supposed to catch all en-US the seafood possible, but to always look to en-US the future.en-US Now what is the best cooking method for en-US nutrition? First, remember cooking food en-US improves digestion and increases absorpen-US -en-US tion of nutrients. We seem to be going back en-US to the simple methods of cooking. Boiling en-US can cause a 50 percent loss of nutrients, so en-US steaming is a much better method by using en-US small amounts of liquid.en-US Baking and roasting are good also with en-US little loss of nutrients. Microwave cooking en-US is a nutritious way to cook as well. Take en-US your favorite vegetables, cut up and place in en-US a glass dish or plastic food-safe bag; season en-US and microwave several minutes. This methen-US -en-US od works well every time. en-US Stir fry also is considered good. You are en-US cooking at high heat for a short period of en-US time. In general, cooking for shorter en-US periods of times at lower temperatures with en-US minimal water is best, and dont forget the en-US liquid from cooking is where the nutrients en-US go, so dont waste it. en-US Now I think its time for me to hit the en-US books again and get ready for the next food en-US trend or maybe I should just get some en-US really old cookbooks and study how we en-US cooked before we changed everything. en-US Here is a recipe and cooking procedure that en-US has not changed in 75 years. Thank you en-US Ms. Ruth Wakefield.en-USTOLL HOUSE CHOCOLATE en-US CHIP COOKIESen-USIngredientsen-US 2-1/4 cups all-purpose flouren-US 1 teaspoon baking sodaen-US 1 teaspoon salten-US 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softeneden-US 3/4-cup granulated sugaren-US 3/4-cup packed brown sugaren-US 1 teaspoon vanilla extracten-US 2 large eggsen-US 2 cups (12-ounce package) semi-sweet en-US chocolate chipsen-US 1 cup chopped nutsen-US Directionsen-US Preheat oven to 375 F. en-US Combine flour, baking soda and salt in en-US small bowl. en-US 22 en-USGearing up for the PGA Championshipen-USTen-UShis weekend, the PGA of America en-US will conduct its 100th Championship en-US at Bellerive Country Club, just en-US outside St. Louis. Founded in 1916, the en-US PGA of America is one of the largest sports en-US organizations in the world, with nearly en-US 29,000 PGA Professionals who work to en-US manage, and grow the game of golf. en-US For many, many years the PGA Champien-US -en-US onship has held the final spot in the years en-US rotation of major championships. As such, en-US it sometimes is overlooked and is usually en-US not held in as high a regard as the Masters, en-US or either of the Opens. What many do not en-US realize, is that it usually has the strongest en-US field of the four.en-US Next year, the championship will move to en-US a better place on the calendar. Bethpage en-US Black will play host to the 2019 PGA en-US Championship from May 13-19. The move en-US will eliminate the gap we currently have en-US between the Masters in April and the U.S. en-US Open in June. The move also makes it en-US easier for years when the Summer Olymen-US -en-US pics is held in August, and gives players a en-US break before the Fed Ex Cup playoffs and en-US allows most of golfs big events to conclude en-US before football season begins.en-US In 1894, with 41 golf courses operating in en-US the United States, two unofficial national en-US championships for amateur golfers were en-US organized. One was held at Newport en-US Country Club in Rhode Island, and the en-US other at St. Andrews Golf Club in New en-US York. In addition, and at the same time as en-US the amateur event, St. Andrews conducted en-US an Open championship for professional en-US golfers. en-US None of the championships were en-US officially sanctioned by a governing body en-US for American golf, causing considerable en-US controversy among players and organizers. en-US Later in 1894 this led to the formation of en-US the United States Golf Association(USGA), en-US which became the first formal golf en-US organization in the country. After the en-US formation of the USGA, golf quickly en-US became a sport of national popularity and en-US importance.en-US In February 1916 the Professional en-US Golfers Association of America (PGA) was en-US established in New York City. One month en-US earlier, the wealthy department store en-US ownerRodman Wanamaker hosted a en-US luncheon with the leading golf professionen-US -en-US als of the day at theWykagyl Country en-US Clubin nearby New Rochelle. en-US The attendees prepared the agenda for en-US the formal organization of the PGA. As a en-US result, golf historians have dubbed Wykagyl en-US The Cradle of the PGA. The new en-US organizations first president was Robert en-US White, one of Wykagyls best-known golf en-US professionals. en-US Thefirst PGA Champien-US -en-US onship was held in en-US October, 1916, at Siwanoy en-US Country Club in Bronxen-US -en-US ville, New York. The en-US tournament was won by en-US Jim Barnes, who received en-US a $500 first-place check en-US and a diamond-studded en-US gold medal donated by en-US Rodman Wanamaker. en-US Last years winner, Justin en-US Thomas, earned over en-US $1.8million. The champion is also awarded en-US a replica of the Wanamaker Trophy, which en-US was also donated by Wanamaker, to keep en-US for one year, and a smaller-sized keeper en-US replica Wanamaker Trophy.en-US Initially, the Championship was a match en-US play event. Players would first play a stroke en-US play qualifier and then move on to match en-US play. It was not unusual for players in the en-US finals to have played over 200 holes over the en-US seven-day event.en-US After the event lost money in 1957, it was en-US decided that to accommodate television, en-US the Championship would be decided over en-US 72 holes of stroke play beginning in 1958. en-US In the early 1960s the event was held the en-US week after the Open Championship, en-US making it nearly impossible for players to en-US compete in both. en-US Over its history, the PGA Championship en-US has been played in nearly every month on en-US the calendar. While most of us are used to en-US seeing it held in August, in 1971, Florida en-US hosted the event in late February. en-US From now, until further notice, the PGA en-US Championship will be held the week before en-US Memorial Day weekend. The move to a en-US cooler month allows the PGA of America en-US to look at holding its Championship in en-US more places around the country. It may en-US seem odd at first to see it being held so en-US early in the year. Having the Open Champien-US -en-US onship as the years final major is kind of en-US fitting as it is our oldest. en-US Enjoy this weeks event. Its likely the last en-US time you will see a major golf championen-US -en-US ship held after July for quite some time.en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years.
