Army Corps spokesman John Campen-US -en-US bell said the fresh water discharges were necesen-US-en-US sary to protect the communities bordering Lake en-US Okeechobee from flooding. en-US The possible health and safety consequences en-US of not discharging water from the lake far outen-US -en-US weigh the present consequences of resuming the en-US discharges, he said. If the dike breaches, the en-US potential for loss of life is much, much greater.en-US Prior to the Corps latest decision, Rep. Brian en-US Mast had pleaded with Florida Army Corps en-US Commander Col. Jason A. The Board ultien-US-en-US mately voted 4-1 for approval that eveen-US -en-US ning, with District 4 Board Member en-US Tina McSolely dissenting.en-US Laurie Prim based her opposition, at en-US least in part, to an Orlando Sentinel en-US investigative article on Florida charter en-US schools that she read from.en-US For years education leaders in Florien-US -en-US da have been ratcheting up standards in en-US education for students in public schools, en-US yet theres a glaring inequity in state polen-US -en-US icy when it comes to private school stuen-US -en-US dents attending with state scholarships, en-US she said. en-US 3 en-USEarl Stewart is the owner and general en-US manager of Earl Stewart Toyota in North en-US Palm Beach. The dealership is located at en-US 1215 N. Federal Highway in Lake Park. en-US Contact him at en-USwww.earlstewarttoyota.com, en-US call 561-358-1474, fax 561-658-0746 or en-US emailen-US earl@estoyota.com.en-USDen-USear Florida law enforcement officer, en-US If youre with the Florida en-US Highway Patrol, County Sheriffs en-US Department, or local city police, youre en-US empowered by Florida law to issue citations en-US and warnings to unsafe vehicles on Floridas en-US roads. You typically exercise this duty by en-US citing drivers of vehicles with faulty tail, en-US brake, and head lights, unsafe tires, or even en-US a non-compliant license plate frame.en-US My suggestion to you is to prioritize en-US citing drivers of vehicles with dangerous en-US safety recalls, especially Takata airbags. en-US There are more deaths and injuries from en-US defective Takata airbags in Florida than all en-US the other 49 states. This is because of en-US Floridas above average heat and humidity en-US which causes the airbag inflator to explode, en-US sending shrapnel throughout the inside of en-US the vehicle, killing and maiming passengers. en-US Furthermore, 75 percent of the cars on the en-US roads with safety recalls have never been en-US repaired. Most of these dangerous cars are en-US older and are being driven by a second, en-US third, fourth or later owners. The manufacen-US -en-US turers of these cars are unable to contact en-US most of these endangered drivers because of en-US old, inaccurate addresses. Theres also the en-US apathy of many drivers to take the time to en-US bring their car in for repair. Lastly, thouen-US -en-US sands of vehicles on the road, especially en-US those with defective Takata airbags, have no en-US fix available. The huge Takata airbag recall en-US demand has exceeded the manufacturers en-US capacity to build the airbag inflators. Some en-US vehicle owners are waiting over a year for a en-US replacement airbag.en-US Your squad cars are equipped with en-US sophisticated computers which can en-US cross-reference the license plate number of en-US any vehicle on the roads and display the en-US VIN, vehicle identification number, aka en-US serial number. You have direct access to the en-US National Highway Traffic Associations en-US (NHTSA) database (www.SaferCar.gov) en-US This source, with the VIN, tells you if the en-US car youre driving behind has an unfixed en-US Takata air bag or any other dangerous safety en-US recall. The NHTSA data base will also tell en-US you IF there is a fix available for this recall.en-US I suggest that you first issue a warning to en-US all drivers of vehicles with unfixed safety en-US recalls, giving them 7 days to have the en-US vehicle repaired; if they fail to comply, issue en-US a suspension of their drivers license. If the en-US NHTSA database tells you that the safety en-US recall has no fix available, you should en-US require the driver to drive immediately to en-US the nearest dealership of his vehicles make en-US and rent a car or receive a free loaner.en-US Thank you for en-US taking the time en-US to read this letter. en-US Im going en-US directly to you, en-US our Florida law en-US enforcement en-US officers, because our governor, legislators, en-US and regulators have all let us down. Clearly, en-US it should be illegal to sell a car with a en-US dangerous safety recall, but our governor en-US and lawmakers will not act. At the very en-US least, it should be required that the buyer of en-US a car with a dangerous safety recall be en-US advised prior to sale, this has not been done en-US either. Therefore, thousands of used cars en-US with dangerous safety recalls are being sold en-US to unsuspecting Floridians daily.en-US I believe you have the authority and the en-US responsibility to take dangerous vehicles off en-US the road and you can exercise this authority en-US under our existing laws without waiting any en-US longer for the politicians and regulators to en-US act. Furthermore, I believe your action will en-US put the pressure on the politicians, en-US regulators, auto manufacturers and car en-US dealers to do the right thing. The legislators en-US and regulators have sat on their hands en-US because of the huge lobbying efforts by auto en-US manufacturers, car dealers, and their en-US associations. Once the drivers of Florida, en-US most of whom are also VOTERS, begin to en-US be pulled over by law enforcement and en-US warned or have their license suspended, en-US you will see our politicians and regulators en-US suddenly begin to do the right thing.en-US Thanks very much for considering my en-US suggestion, Earl Stewart www.dansfancity.com CUT OUT THIS AD FORIN-STORE DISCOUNTS PARTS, SERVICE & INSTALLATION AVAILABLE M-Sat 9a-6p Sun 11a-4p LARGEST SELECTION OF INDOOR & OUTDOOR FANS ANYWHERE! 7 7 2335-8625 10762 S. en-US 4 en-USto delay the discharges due to a massive en-US green algae bloom covering most of the en-US lakes surface.en-US Sending algae-laden water to the St. en-US Lucie Estuary would present a more immien-US-en-US nent and dangerous threat to public health en-US and safety than anything else, he stated in en-US the letter.en-US The Army Corps first began releasing en-US Lake O water to the estuaries on June 1 in en-US response to heavy rains in late May. Those en-US releases began to cause green algae buildup en-US as far away as Fort Myers and Downtown en-US Stuart, where the Hometown News found en-US green algae blooms floating in Frazier Creek en-US and at the Sunset Bay Marina as recently as en-US July 8. The Corps reduced the discharges by en-US 25 percent on June 22 in response to an en-US emergency order by Gov. Rick Scott issued en-US two days prior directing the Florida Departen-US -en-US ment of Environmental Protection to urge en-US the Corps to slow the releases. On June 21, en-US the South Florida Water Management Disen-US-en-US trict implemented a series of new measures en-US designed to work in conjunction with othen-US-en-US ers already in place to help lower the lake en-US level by moving a larger quantity of water en-US into the stormwater treatment areas south of en-US the lake. District Governing Board Chairen-US -en-US man Federico Fernandez stated that day he en-US believed the governors expedited process en-US would cut through much red tape and get en-US the water level down sooner.en-US We are taking every opportunity to en-US remove water from the conservation areas en-US through our regional flood control system, en-US he explained. These measures, combined en-US with necessary actions by our federal parten-US-en-US ners, will help reduce the water levels caused en-US by the record-setting rainfall we have seen en-US so far this wet season.en-US Neither Mr. Fernandez nor the District en-US media office responded to email questions en-US on deadline as to why these late June meaen-US -en-US sures had not had an effect or whether they en-US had even been put into place yet. The Direcen-US-en-US tor of Advocacy for the Coastal Conservaen-US -en-US tion Association of Florida welcomed the en-US states latest efforts but admitted they en-US wouldnt be enough to solve the problem. en-US CCA applauds the effort to send more en-US water south and limit the water being sent to en-US the St. Lucie and the Caloosahatchee rivers, en-US he said. We understand that this is far from en-US the solution, but every little piece helps.en-US Martin County Commissioner Sarah en-US Heard said July 2 she doubted the newest en-US measures by the District would have any en-US effect. She insisted Florida must continue en-US with already approved plans for the Indian en-US River Lagoon project, a component of the en-US 2007 Water Resources Development Act en-US that includes a reservoir and STAs for the en-US C-44 canal, and both reservoirs and STAs en-US for the C-23, C-24 and C-25 canals.en-US We need to construct the projects in en-US CERP [Comprehensive Everglades Restoen-US -en-US ration Project] in a methodical, timely way, en-US she said. All of these critical projects are en-US programmed in the current Integrated en-US Delivery Schedule, a 15-year funded work en-US product schedule agreed to by both Florida en-US and the federal government. None of the en-US subsequent projects, like CEPP [Central en-US Everglades Planning Project] and the EAA en-US [Everglades Agricultural Area] reservoir, en-US will deliver the promised results that show en-US substantial improvements for the St. Lucie en-US and Indian River Lagoon estuaries until and en-US unless the IRL South projects are all comen-US -en-US pleted. en-US St. Lucie County Commissioner Chris en-US Dzadovsky insisted July 8 the Corps needed en-US to update its discharge schedule known as en-US the Lake Okeechobee Regulation Schedule en-US and stop focusing on making the lake capaen-US -en-US ble of holding more water.en-US The ACOE does need to update the en-US LORS -which involves an Act of Congress en-US -but in the final analysis strengthening the en-US dike is for safety, not to hold larger amounts en-US of water over time, he said. Increasing the en-US depth of the lake will severely hinder the en-US ecosystem that is Lake Okeechobee. Killing en-US one for the other does not make logical en-US sense.en-US Both the Martin and St Lucie county en-US commissions sent resolutions to Tallahassee en-US in June urging the prompt completion of the en-US Indian River Lagoon South project. Comen-US-en-US missioner Heard warned her fellow comen-US-en-US missioners right before the unanimous en-US approval of the resolutionthat the CEPP en-US and EAA projects appeared to be crowding en-US the local canal portions of IRL South out of en-US the way.en-US So, it looks like C-23/C-24 may be slipen-US-en-US ping, and CEPP and EAA reservoir projects en-US may be leapfrogging over these, which is en-US really dangerous for us, she said June 12. en-US So I would urge that we write to our state en-US legislators and our federal legislators and let en-US them know in no uncertain terms that the en-US C-23/C-24 projects have to continue, they en-US have to be in design and they have to be en-US funded, because otherwise we are en-US over-promising and we are going to en-US under-deliver. We are not going to receive en-US the benefits from the EAA storage and we en-USare not going to receive the benefits from en-US CEPP storage if we dont do these projects en-US first. en-US St. Lucie County Commissioner Dzaen-US -en-US dovsky worried about the potential health en-US threats from the pollutants and latest en-US onslaught of green algae being released en-US from Lake Okeechobee and said prevention en-US would be less costly.en-US It is however the pollutants such as en-US nitrogen, phosphorous, heavy metals, pestien-US -en-US cides, herbicides, and the like, that are createn-US -en-US ing life-threatening problems such as liver en-US damage, kidney damage, early onset of en-US dementia and Alzheimers, he said. The en-US cost of keeping contaminants out of the sysen-US-en-US tem is far less expensive than having to en-US spend billions in building STAs and treaten-US-en-US ment trains in removing contamination. en-US The people of Florida have provided a clear en-US message with the 2014 Amendment 1 referen-US -en-US endum with a funding source to make a en-US very focused effort to implement CERP en-US [Comprehensive Everglades Restoration en-US Plan] and the collective components to en-US clean up our waterways and fix the plumben-US -en-US ing once and for all en-US For her part, Commissioner Heard insists en-US the state must focus on keeping water from en-US overwhelming Lake Okeechobee to begin en-US with.en-US Additionally, Florida must create addien-US -en-US tional storage and treatment north of Lake en-US Okeechobee, she said.en-US Although Indian River County Commisen-US-en-US sion Chairman Peter OBryan said dischargen-US -en-US es from the lake do not affect his portion of en-US the Lagoon, he concurs with Commissioner en-US Heard on northern storage and believes en-US moving water south could potential help its en-US southern portion on the Treasure Coast. en-US As far as Lake O, storing more water to Verticals PlusFamily Owned & Operated Since 1989Custom Made BlindsCellular & Pleated Shades, Faux Wood & Wood Blinds, Shutters, Quality Verticals, Woven Woods, Mini Blinds & More 10% OFF( orders of $500 or more)Exp. 8-3-182201 S.E. en-US 5 en-USthe north to prevent it from flowing into the en-US lake would be a big positive, he said. Any en-US reduction in flow will help the lagoon down en-US in Martin and St. Lucie counties. There will en-US still be nutrients entering the lagoon from en-US the local watersheds, as well as from leaking en-US septic systems and fertilizer run off, but en-US stopping the flow will help keep the lagoon en-US brackish, which will prevent more blooms.en-US Indian River County is also working proen-US -en-US actively to address the other forms of polluen-US -en-US tion that negatively affect that portion of the en-US estuary.en-US We currently have four nutrient removal en-US projects running, Chairman OBryan en-US added. Later this fall we will be opening a en-US new 83-acre stormwater park. We should en-US also be completing a nutrient removal projen-US-en-US ect on the north relief canal. At least one house in Port St. Lucie en-US has no less than four trailed boats stored on en-US this residential property. These unused en-US boats are just some sort of lawn trophy en-US Hey, I am so rich and wasteful, I own a boat en-US I never use. If the boat hasnt touched water en-US in a year, sell it to someone who wants use it en-US and not just own it.en-USHelp to reduce panicen-USWe can reduce the panic spread by the en-US Chicken Little local news as weather peren-US -en-US sons during hurricane season. We need a en-US website that, when you enter your zip code en-US and a hurricane is near, will give you the en-US winds expected in that zip code in the next en-US 24, 36, and 48 hours. That way, the panic en-US about high winds can be narrowed to a en-US small area instead of wide spread panic.en-USStop fighting Brightlineen-USIt seems fighting against Brightline has en-US had another side effect for the Treasure en-US Coast, not only will we not be getting a train en-US station here to slow it down on its way to en-US Orlando and Disney to connect a metropolen-US -en-US itan area of 6 million with a metro area of 3 en-US million, now we wont be silencing our en-US horns any time soon the way cities to our en-US South are about to. According to the Palm en-US Beach newspapers May 10th headlines, en-US Brightlines upgrades are about to silence en-US train horns on FCC tracks in six out of seven en-US cities beginning really soon. Anybody liven-US-en-US ing within a mile of the tracks knows the en-US nightly assault on the ears hearing those en-US horns blaring in the silence of the night at en-US two, three and four oclock in the morning. en-US Many must be regretting the decision to en-US fight against the trains coming by here and en-US the silencing of the horns that would have en-US brought us. Now as these trains approach, en-US theyll keep mercilessly blaring their horns en-US as hard as they possibly could during the en-US wee hours of the morning just remind us of en-US our stupidity and the transfer of wealth to en-US the lawyers pockets fighting this losing war. en-US You aint stopping this train, sorry, aint en-US going to happen. Fight for a train station en-US instead.en-USVote no!en-USVote No to Incorporate. I have been comen-US -en-US ing to Hobe Sound for forty years and it has en-US not changed much over time. Yes, there are en-US more homes and the shopping centers at en-US Bridge Road and US 1 but the quaintness of en-US Hobe Sound is still here. What are the proen-US -en-US ponents of incorporation going to save us en-US from? Martin County has been doing a good en-US job preserving Hobe Sound. In my opinion en-US there are hidden agendas with the people en-US pushing for incorporation. Taxes will go up en-US to pay for an additional layer of Governen-US -en-US ment that is not needed. Remember the old en-US saying If it isnt broken dont fix it en-USBe kind to iguanasen-USIts important to remember that animals en-US like the iguanas and boa constrictors en-US invading Florida were once pets, en-US dumped when the novelty wore off. They en-US are here through no fault of their own and en-US should be dealt with humanely. Startling en-US people and eating plants surely shouldnt be en-US cause for a death sentence.en-US In general, iguanas want to stay away en-US from you as much as you want to stay away en-US from them. Make your property unappealen-US-en-US ing to iguanas. There are many plants and en-US ornamentals that iguanas do not eat. If you en-US have fruit trees, dont let dropped fruit stay en-US on the ground. Seal holes, cracks in the walls en-US and floors, and spaces around doors, winen-US-en-US dows, and plumbing. Make sure your en-US screens are secure and undamaged. Keep en-US brushy areas where iguanas like to nest to a en-US minimum. Hang cheap CDs as wind chimes en-US from trees or prized plants (the reflective en-US surfaces often scare iguanas away). Nonleen-US-en-US thal deterrent sprays are available at harden-US -en-US ware stores. Living in harmony with en-US free-roaming iguanas is possible without en-US having to bash their skulls in.en-USWalking dogsen-USLets be honest, people walk their dogs so en-US they can relieve themselves on other peoen-US -en-US ples property. Some walking the dog at en-US night, unleashed, so they dont have to bothen-US -en-US er to clean up and some are doing it in dayen-US -en-US time too. Confronted, they get feisty and try en-US to make you the bad person on top of it. I en-US could easily do without this kind of neighen-US -en-US bors. en-USJust a few thingsen-USFirst I wish to thank the Vietnam Veteren-US -en-US ans of St. Lucie County for the Military en-US Appreciation Game for ALL veterans. But en-US while at the game, I witnessed a grown man en-US grab a baseball that three children were en-US chasing. Instead of giving it to one of the en-US kids, he held his trophy up as if hed done en-US something special. Taking candy from a en-US baby? Shame!!en-US And also shame on the City of Fort Pierce en-US for putting money above locally owned en-US businesses. The Tiki Bar will no longer be en-US locally owned, and I will no longer give en-US them my business. There are too many en-US locally owned businesses that will appreciate en-USit more. en-USSevin Bullwinkle/staff photographeren-USThe Over-The-Hill Summer Hockey Season 43 Champions: Red en-US team members Mike Abel, Ryan Lixie, Bob Glenn, Matt Pompa en-US (Goalie), Mark Ulrich, Vinny DeVita, Chris Miele and Ben Baxter, en-US with Referee Andre Lambros. en-USThe champions!

en-US 9 en-USof education they need to succeed, and taxen-US -en-US payers are not getting their moneys worth.en-US Ms. Prim also cited cases where some en-US schools hired educators without college en-US degrees, some hired staff with criminal en-US records and some falsified safety records, en-US and insinuated the four Board members en-US approving the TCCA charter could eventuen-US -en-US ally lose their seats.en-US We will be watching and the job of the en-US school board members is to be doing that, en-US she said as she pointing toward the dais. en-US And the job of us, the voters, is to make en-US sure that those seats will be filled by school en-US board members doing their job.en-US Another speaker, Bill Smithson, said he en-US strongly objected approval of the TCCA en-US application on many levels too numerous to en-US mention and concurred with Ms. McSoleys en-US comment that the academy offered nothing en-US different than that already offered by the en-US Districts own A-rated schools. He particuen-US -en-US larly opposed the charter because the Baren-US -en-US ney Charter School Initiative was started by en-US a Christian college, a view shared by others en-US during the April meeting.en-US First, the approval of TCCAs charter en-US application is in direct violation of the U.S. en-US Constitution for The First Amendment en-US Establishment Clause, he said. TCCA -en-US like all classical education academies -is en-US directly tied to Hillsdale College a private, en-US ultra-conservative institution in Southern en-US Michigan that describes itself as non-sectaren-US -en-US ian Christian dedicated to civil and religious en-US liberty. As a secular Jew and humanist, I do en-US not want one penny of my tax dollars spent en-US on a private classical education. Parents who en-US want this type of education for their chilen-US -en-US dren need to pay for it as with any other prien-US -en-US vate school.en-US For her part, Heather Rogers asked the en-US Board to investigate the performance of en-US other charter schools around the nation and en-US report back to the public with their findings.en-US You need to ensure that charter school en-US students that may attend the Treasure Coast en-US Classical Academy arent at an intellectual en-US disadvantage, she said. They wont be folen-US-en-US lowing common core. Would this make en-US their institution inferior to the instruction en-US used in public schools? At Julys meeting, I en-US would like for you to report to the public en-US how many charters have closed in Florida, en-US how much money has the state lost from en-US these charters closing, what are the suben-US-en-US groups of children in these charter schools en-US and what are their scores in the FSA in comen-US-en-US parison to public school achievements. The en-US citizens of Martin County need to be eduen-US-en-US cated on what you are approving in our disen-US -en-US trict since you will be using taxpayer dollars en-US to support this charter School.en-US None of the School Board members chose en-US to respond to their comments since the maten-US -en-US ter had been settled in April and the item en-US did not appear on that evenings agenda. en-US Two of the TCCA Board members, Erika en-US Donalds and Shawn Frost, did however en-US respond to Hometown News questions via en-US email as to some of the allegations made en-US during the recent meeting and their reasons en-US for supporting the school charter. The foren-US -en-US mer, who helped found the Mason Classical en-US Academy in Naples that follows the same en-US Barney Charter School Initiative curricuen-US -en-US lum, insisted that nothing from the colleges en-US religious doctrine would seep into the curen-US -en-US riculum because TCCA is a public school.en-US As with all public schools (and all Hillsen-US -en-US dale charter schools), the school is comen-US -en-US pletely secular, she said. TCCA will teach en-US civic values but will be neutral with respect en-US to religion and will not provide religious en-US instruction.en-US Ms. Donalds, who now holds a seat on the en-US Collier County School Board, explained en-US that Martin County parents recruited her en-US for the local charter campaign for a Hillsen-US-en-US dale classical school.en-US I learned that Martin County has very en-US few public school choice options (none for en-US elementary and middle outside of the school en-US for autistic students), and has the secen-US -en-US ond-highest percentage of students attenden-US -en-US ing private school in the state (nearly 27 peren-US -en-US cent), she said. I believe in the classical en-US model and want to see it offered as a free en-US public school option in every community.en-US Mr. Frost, who currently serves as the en-US chairman of the Indian River County School en-US Board and said his role in Martin County en-US was strictly in a non-official capacity as a en-US volunteer board member, echoed Ms. Donen-US -en-US alds sentiments.en-US I believe in the classical liberal arts curen-US -en-US riculum and philosophy of education and en-US believe that every community should have en-US this as an option for parents to select, he en-US said. The volunteer governing board mem en-US-en-US bers for TCCA are doing a great job of en-US bringing this possibility to Martin County, en-US and parents are excited about the prospect en-US of a different schooling option.en-US Mr. Frost emphasized that the Martin en-US academy, like all other classical campuses, en-US was linked to the others only by its parent en-US curriculum but that fact alone would give it TREASURE COAST Just in time for en-USone of the busiest driving days of the year, en-US gas prices rose to their highest for an Indeen-US -en-US pendence Day holiday in four years.en-US AAA estimated that gas prices nationwide en-US would average $2.86 per gallon on the en-US fourth of July. GasBuddy had a slightly highen-US -en-US er projection, estimating that drivers would en-US pay an average of $2.90 per gallon.en-US In Florida, the Independence Day average en-US was $2.706, 13th lowest in the nation. The en-US lowest Florida prices were $2.49 in Clearwaen-US -en-US ter.en-US South Carolina had the lowest average at en-US 2.515. Hawaii had the highest average at en-US 3.686.en-US AAA and GasBuddy agreed that this en-US would be the highest Independence Day gas en-US prices since 2014, when the national average en-US hit $3.66 per gallon. Over the first four days en-US of July, GasBuddy estimated, gas purchases en-US cost motorists $1.02 billion more than last en-US year.en-US Several domestic and international facen-US-en-US tors are driving the high prices. According en-US to the U.S. Energy Information Administraen-US-en-US tion, U.S. exports have surged to a record en-US high. While U.S. refineries are running at a en-US very high 97.5 percent of capacity, much of en-US that domestically produced oil is sold en-US abroad.en-US As the EIA explains on its website, Refinen-US -en-US ers in the U.S. Gulf Coast region frequently en-US find that it makes economic sense to export en-US some of their gasoline to Mexico rather than en-US shipping it to the East Coast of the United en-US States.en-US The record setting exports dramatically en-US increase the amount of petroleum the U.S. en-US needs to import. According to the EIA, in en-US 2017 the United States produced about 15.4 en-US million barrels of petroleum per day en-US (MMb/d), and it consumed about 19.9 en-US MMb/d. en-US In 2017, total U.S. petroleum exports en-US averaged about 6.3 MMb/d.en-US Canada is the largest source of U.S. petroen-US -en-US leum imports. Canadas share of U.S. petroen-US-en-US leum imports has increased from 15 percent en-US in 1994 to 40 percent in 2017.en-US After Canada, the largest sources of U.S. en-US petroleum imports were Saudi Arabia, 9 en-US percent, Mexico, 7 percent, Venezuela, 7 en-US percent, and Iraq, 6 percent.en-US According to the EIA, petroleum figures en-US include more products than just crude oil. en-US Petroleum includes gasoline, diesel fuel, jet en-US fuel, unfinished oils, and other liquids such en-US as fuel ethanol.en-US The five largest destinations of U.S. petroen-US -en-US leum exports in 2017 were Mexico, 17 peren-US -en-US cent, Canada, 13 percent, China, 7 percent, en-US Brazil, 6 percent, and Japan, 6 percent.en-US U.S. petroleum imports peaked in 2005 en-US and then declined until 2015. This was the en-US result of many factors, including a decline in en-US consumption, improvements in vehicle fuel en-US economy, increased use of domestic biofuels en-US like ethanol, and increased domestic proen-US-en-US duction of crude oil and hydrocarbon gas en-US liquids. That trend reversed in 2015, and en-US imports and consumption both increased in en-US 2015 through 2017.en-US Going into the July 4 holiday, I cant en-US remember the last time oil markets were so en-US active, said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroen-US -en-US leum analysis for GasBuddy. Oil has surged en-US over 10 percent just in time for summers en-US busiest travel holiday, costing motorists over en-US $1 billion more than last year. All the ingreen-US -en-US dients exist for the national average to inch en-US closer to $3 per gallon, just in time for the en-US second half of the summer. Undoubtedly, en-US the second half of the summer will be pricien-US -en-US er than the first, thanks to OPECs producen-US -en-US tion increase falling short of expectations, en-US sanctions to be placed back on Iran by en-US November and falling U.S. oil inventories. en-US And to rub some salt in the wound, hurrien-US -en-US cane season is upon us, adding more guessen-US-en-US work to where gas prices might spend the en-US second half of the summer. Be ready for volen-US -en-US atility and likely higher prices at the pump en-US in July and August.en-US The State Department has ordered buyers en-US to reduce or end oil purchases from Iran by en-US November. At the same time, total petroen-US -en-US leum exports from the U.S. hitting a record en-US high have reduced U.S. inventories to about en-US a third of what was expected. AAA says a en-US consistent decline in supplies could spark en-US even higher gas prices.en-US Elevated crude oil prices and other geoen-US -en-US political concerns could tilt gas prices more en-US expensive in the early fall despite an expecten-US-en-US ed increase in global crude production from en-US OPEC and its partners, said AAA spokesen-US-en-US person Jeanette Casselano.en-US AAA is tracking other factors it expects to en-US impact pump prices through the fall, includen-US -en-US ing increasing demand in the U.S. and ecoen-USen-USnomic volatility in Libya and Venezuela.en-US If U.S. demand remains strong and en-US domestic and global supply decline, motoren-US -en-US ists may see the national gas prices average en-US to potentially jump back up to nearly $3/en-US gallon in coming months, added Ms. Casen-US-en-US selano.en-USGas prices hit four-year high as exports surgeen-USBy Mike Winikoffen-USmwinikoff@hometownnewsol.comen-USCharteren-USFrom page 1 en-USSeeen-US en-US CHARTERen-US page 16

During the en-US hot summer months, this can be a huge en-US challenge. The very hot temperatures and en-US sizzling sun can take a toll on many crops en-US that we try to propagate. Some of the main en-US staples like tomatoes can really take a en-US beating but sometimes growing them in en-US containers will give you a lot more choices. en-US Keep in mind that container gardening is en-US not good for all crops but it works extremeen-US -en-US ly well with the tomato plant. en-US As with any vegetable garden, the soil is en-US king. You have to purchase and use a good en-US quality soil to get good results. I have en-US always been a fan of Miracle Gro and they en-US make a soil for almost every purpose you en-US can imagine. Their product is not the least en-US expensive but it is one of the best you can en-US buy. en-US If you plan on trying tomatoes during en-US the summer, be sure to use containers that en-US are quite large but still allow you to move en-US them if need be. The object is to find a en-US location where the plants will get filtered en-US sunlight with not too much shade and not en-US too much direct sunlight in the Florida en-US afternoons. In addition, you can move your en-US plants to safety in the event of a severe en-US weather event or hurricane. en-US Many garden centers will carry tomato en-US plants even during the hotter summer en-US months. You might have to do some en-US hunting, but you should be able to locate en-US some. If not, you can always start your en-US plants from seed. If you are impatient like en-US me, you will likely want to locate plants that en-US are already started. When you purchase en-US your plants, be sure to get some vegetable en-US fertilizer. A water soluble is better because en-US there is less chance of burning your crops. en-US You will also want to get some bug spray en-US that is safe for tomatoes and other food en-US crops. With the Florida heat, you will need en-US it. Be sure your containers have excellent en-US drainage. I recommend drilling holes in the en-US bottom of the containers even if they en-US already have some there. en-US Once you have your plants in the en-US containers and you have found the ideal en-US location, the fun begins as you wait for en-US your delicious veggies to grow and ripen. It en-US might take some trial and error to get the en-US right spot and you may encounter issues en-US that you normally might not see during the en-US cooler part of the growing season but once en-US you have the system mastered, you will be en-US able to grow summer tomatoes year after en-US year.en-US There are lots of other choices you might en-US want to try as well such as peppers, sweet en-US potatoes, radishes and even watermelon. en-US Most of these will need to be planted in the en-US ground for the best results and location will en-US be the primary factor for success or failure. en-US Be sure to use a location that at least gets en-US some filtered sun or shade in the heat of the en-US Florida afternoon sun. It is also advisable to en-US find a location that drains well. Vegetable en-US crops do not like locations that get soggy en-US wet and stay that way after an afternoon en-US thunderstorm. en-US If you are from the north where summer en-US is the primary growing season, you will en-US likely want to test out the waters on some of en-US these summer varieties in Florida. Do not en-US be discouraged if your first attempt fails. en-US The first summer garden I planted when I en-US first moved here got almost washed away en-US with a tropical depression. I quickly found en-US out what parts of the back yard flood en-US during heavy rain events.en-US In short, if you are itching to get that en-US summer garden going, by all means tackle en-US it. Since the forecast is for ca below average en-US hurricane season, you just might get that en-US bumper crop you are dreaming about.en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape. Floridas 9,000 en-US miles of freshwater and salt water shoreline en-US offer opportunities to have fun and stay en-US cool, but it is important to know when to en-US swim, stick to the shore or avoid naturalen-US -en-US ly-occurring living organisms like mosquien-US-en-US toes or algae blooms.en-US Cyanobacteria/ blue-green algae are a en-US group of organisms that can live in freshwaen-US -en-US ter, salt water or mixed brackish water. en-US When conditions are right, such as warm en-US water and increased nutrients, these organen-US-en-US isms can increase in numbers and accumuen-US-en-US late in some areas of a water body. These en-US blooms can sometimes be pushed near the en-US shore by winds, waves, tides and currents. en-US When this happens, people have a greater en-US chance of contacting the blooms. en-US Exposure to water containing algae may en-US cause gastrointestinal effects if swallowed en-US and rash if touched or inhaled. Swimming en-US in water with blue green algae blooms may en-US cause ear, eye and skin reactions, and hay en-US fever and flu-like symptoms (including en-US diarrhea) these reactions are not comen-US -en-US mon. Algae blooms can also remove oxygen en-US from the water and cause fish kills.en-US The department offers the following en-US Swim It, Shore It or Dodge It reminders:en-US Swim It with a buddy when safety flags en-US and signs indicate that it is safe to do so.en-US Shore It on the sand if you have a cut on en-US your skin, have a weakened immune system en-US or you are aloneen-US Dodge It avoid organisms that live in or en-US near the water, and stay clear of algae en-US blooms.en-US If you experience illness related to an en-US algae bloom, please call the Florida Poison en-US Control Center at 1800-222-1222.en-US For health-related questions, contact the en-US Florida Department of Health in Martin en-US County at 772-221-4090.en-US To report fish kills, call Fish Kill Hotline en-US (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation en-US Commission) at 800-636-0511.en-US To report algae blooms, contact the Florien-US -en-US da Department of Environmental Protecen-US -en-US tion at 855-305-3903.en-US For more information about blue-green en-US algae and enjoying Floridas water ways safeen-US -en-US ly, visit en-US http://www.floridahealth.gov/envien-US-en-US ronmental-health/aquatic-toxins/cyanobacen-US -en-US teria.html en-US For general information about algal en-US blooms: en-US https://www.cdc.gov/habs/general.en-US htmlen-US For more information about the Florida en-US Department of Health in Martin County en-US please visit en-US www.MartinCountyHealth.com Answers Located in the Classied Section County for at least one year, who is also a en-USbusiness owner of a business located within en-US the respective Community Redevelopment en-US Area; oren-US iii. I en-US realize that many courses are an amenity en-US and designed to complement the developen-US -en-US ment, but I prefer trees and such over pools en-US and houses. en-US I was recently invited to play The Deltona en-US Club, a course that sits a short drive en-US northeast of Orlando and southwest of en-US Daytona, just a hop and a skip off Interstate en-US 4. The course is part of a development, but en-US you would never know it. The course sits en-US right in the middle, utilizing the rolling en-US hills and valleys to create a wonderful en-US experience.en-US The course, built in the 1960s, was en-US extensively renovated and updated earlier en-US this decade by award-winning architect en-US Bobby Weed, and was named 2013 No. 1 en-US Golf Course Renovation in Florida by Golf en-US Inc. Magazine. The Deltona Club features en-US five sets of tees, playing as short as 4,678en-US yards or as long as 6,988-yards.en-US Thanks to the terrain, there is a wonderen-US -en-US ful variety of holes. You will find yourself en-US playing uphill and downhill, along with an en-US occasional side-hill lie. Thanks to the en-US beautiful, mature oaks, pines and other en-US trees, each hole is well defined and framed.en-US I found the course to be well balanced, en-US with the most difficult holes split between en-US the two nines. With so many hills and en-US doglegs, the course requires you to think en-US your way around. The par-4 second hole en-US makes a 90 degree dogleg to the right from en-US the fairway. From the tee, you must hug the en-US right side and be careful not to drive en-US through the fairway to give yourself the en-US best approach shot to a green sitting atop a en-US hill. en-US The toughest hole on the course is the en-US long par-4 fourth. From the tee you face a en-US shot to a fairway that looks narrower than it en-US is. The fifth hole is a perfectly straight, en-US dowhill par-5 that plays shorter than its en-US posted yardage, because a solid drive will en-US roll forever.en-US One of the most uphill shots that I have en-US ever experienced came at the par-5 seventh. en-US The hole is quite short, playing under 500en-US yards from the tips, but the green is difficult en-US to hold and you cannot see the putting en-US surface from the fairway. I managed to en-US reach this baby in two, and walked off with en-US a nice birdie.en-US For some golfers, nothing is as exciting as en-US having a chance to drive the green on a en-US par-4. Deltona features two such holes, the en-US first of which is number eight. Playing en-US downhill and downwind, I hit my usual en-US drive and found myself just off the left side en-US of the green.en-US At the turn I enjoyed a cold beverage, en-US sandwich and a tasty snack to fuel me for en-US the back nine. en-US The back nine is as delightful as the en-US front, with holes weaving left and right, and en-US up and down the rolling hills. There are en-US several waste bunkers on the course, and I en-US managed to find a few on the second nine.en-US My favorite hole at Deltona is the par-3 en-US 14th. This hole has an elevation change of en-US about 50feet or more, from the tee to the en-US green below. Your tee shot requires a hybrid en-US or long iron to reach the putting surface. en-US When selecting your club, you must also en-US figure in the wind and the elevations effect en-US on the distance. en-US The finishing holes are a lot of fun. The en-US par-5 16th is a tempting hole that allows en-US you to be as brave or careful as you need. en-US Seventeen is the longest par-4 on the en-US course, but plays downwind, leaving you a en-US shorter approach than you anticipate. en-US Eighteen is a great final hole. It is not en-US only the second drivable par-4, but the en-US shortest on the scorecard. Do not let these en-US facts fool you. The hole is fraught with en-US danger, even for those timid souls laying up en-US and playing safe. There are trees, waste en-US bunkers, and the deepest green-side bunker en-US I have ever had the misfortune of finding, en-US protecting it. en-US If you are looking for a great round, with en-US all the fun of rolling hills, waste bunkers, en-US and fairways that are not crowded by en-US homes, you must play The Deltona Club. en-US For tee times, rates and information, call en-US the club at (386) 789-4911 or visit www.en-US TheDeltonaClub.com.en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years.
