During this time, the Indiantown en-US Company Utilities Department will be switching water disinfection methods from the en-US use of Chloramines, a disinfectant made from chlorine and ammonia, to the use of free en-US chlorine.en-US Free chlorine is a stronger germ-killer, but sometimes leaves a chlorine taste or smell en-US in tap water. This change is a normal procedure to help ensure that potentially harmful en-US microbes do not develop in the water system.en-US With the exception of tropical fish, free chlorine generally is not harmful to humans en-US and pets. However, its lethal to the most stubborn types of bacteria and viruses. It preen-US -en-US vents them from building a resistance to chloramines.en-US These temporary conditions will not be harmful to your health, however, if you are on en-US kidney dialysis, you should consult your physician for special instructions concerning en-US this matter. If you have tropical fish or aquatic animals, you should contact your local en-US tropical fish store for advice and take appropriate action to properly treat the water en-US before adding it to your aquarium.en-US Please note that utility personnel will be flushing hydrants during this time and it may en-US cause the water to become cloudy and discolored. en-US 3 en-USTREASURE COAST The Florida en-US Department of Education released test en-US scores on June 14. In most cases, with a few en-US notable exceptions, Treasure Coast schools en-US showed improvement that mirrored stateen-US -en-US wide gains.en-US For the Florida Standards Assessments en-US English Language Arts, the statewide peren-US -en-US centage of students achieving a satisfactoen-US-en-US ry Level 3 score rose from 53 to 54 percent en-US from 2017 to 2018. en-US Indian River County remained under the en-US state average but showed a similar one point en-US increase from 51-52 percent. Martin County en-US was above the statewide average but showed en-US a decrease from 59-58 percent. St. Lucie en-US County was below the state average but en-US showed the greatest improvement on the en-US Treasure Coast, from 48-50 percent.en-US In mathematics, the statewide improveen-US -en-US ment was one point, from 59-60 percent.en-US Indian River showed the largest math en-US improvement in the area, rising from 56-59 en-US percent, but still one point below state averen-US -en-US age. St. Lucie rose two points from 52-54 en-US percent. Martin had the best passing rate by en-US far but the lowest improvement, rising from en-US 66-67 percent.en-US The statewide improvement was greatest en-US in grade 5 science, rising from 51-55 peren-US -en-US cent. Each Treasure Coast district showed en-US similar gains. Indian River rose from 48-54 en-US percent. Martin rose from 50-54 percent. St. en-US Lucie rose from 43-50 percent.en-US For grade 8 science, the statewide gain en-US was two points, from 50-52 percent.en-US Indian River tripled that improvement, en-US rising from 47-53 percent. Martin rose from en-US 54-57 percent. St. Lucie rose from 46-49 en-US percent.en-US The social studies numbers were less conen-US -en-US sistent. In civics, the statewide scores en-US improved from 69-71 percent. But Indian en-US River showed a five point drop, from 70-65 en-US percent. Martin showed an above average en-US increase, from 71-79 percent. St. Lucie en-US increased two points from 69-71 percent.en-US In U.S. history, the statewide scores en-US improved from 67-68, but Martin dropped en-US one point from 75-74 percent, still far above en-US the state average. Indian River increased en-US from 69-70, and St. Lucie increased one en-US point also, from 62-63.en-US We applaud the work of our teachers and en-US students, said Indian River County Superen-US -en-US intendent Dr. Mark Rendell. A years worth en-US of teaching and learning are not necessarily en-US represented in these test scores, but they are en-US the measure that the state uses. We do have en-US reason to celebrate several areas of accomen-US -en-US plishment. Overall, as a district, our scores en-US improved in English Language Arts, Math, en-US and Science. Some of the increases were sigen-US -en-US nificant. For example, both 5th Grade and en-US 8th Grade Science saw increases of six en-US points. Probably the most impressive was a en-US 14-point increase in Algebra 1, which put us en-US above the state average. Our Curriculum en-US and Instruction Department focused on en-US some of these areas and it has paid off.en-US In St. Lucie County, Superintendent E. en-US Wayne Gent attributed the growth to the en-US individualized support students receive. I en-US commend our teachers, administrators, and en-US staff, Superintendent Gent said. Overall, en-US the vast majority of our students are making en-US gains, and we are continuing our positive en-US trends which is a credit to our outstanding en-US staff.en-US The Florida Department of Education en-US analyzed the achievement gap between Afrien-US-en-US can American, Hispanic, and white stuen-US -en-US dents. Commissioner Pam Stewart said that en-US in grades 3-10, the percentage of African en-US American students passing the English Lanen-US -en-US guage Arts assessment increased by one peren-US -en-US centage point, while the percentage of Hisen-US -en-US panic students passing increased by two en-US percentage points. Both groups, Commisen-US -en-US sioner Stewart said, narrowed the achieveen-US -en-US ment gap with their white counterparts.en-US Commissioner Stewart said the percenten-US -en-US age of economically disadvantaged students en-US in grades 3-8 passing the Mathematics en-US assessments increased by two percentage en-US points, while African American students, en-US Hispanic students, and students with disen-US -en-US abilities each increased performance by one en-US percentage point. en-US In Algebra 1, Hispanic students increased en-US the percentage of students passing the en-US assessment by two percentage points. Ecoen-US -en-US nomically disadvantaged students increased en-US their performance by two percentage points, en-US and African American students and stuen-US -en-US dents with disabilities increased their peren-US -en-US formance by one percentage point.en-US In Geometry, Hispanic students increased en-US the percentage passing by four points. Ecoen-US -en-US nomically disadvantaged students increased en-US their performance by four percentage en-USpoints, and African American students en-US increased the percentage passing by three en-US percentage points.en-US For more information about the test results, en-US visiten-US www.fldoe.org/accountability/assessen-US -en-US ments/k-12-student-assessment/en-US results/2018.stml.en-US For Martin County, visiten-US www.martinen-US-en-US schools.org. en-US 4 en-USTREASURE COAST From June en-US 1-Sept. 30, it is illegal to fertilize your lawn en-US in St. Lucie and Martin counties. While en-US there are some exemptions for specific busien-US -en-US nesses like golf courses and farms, and there en-US are a few fertilizers that are safe to use en-US during the summer, the general rule is to en-US simply avoid fertilizing for a few months.en-US The purpose of the ban is to protect the en-US Indian River Lagoon from the harmful en-US excess nutrients that get washed from your en-US lawn during the rainy season. The law also en-US regulates what types of fertilizer can be used en-US the rest of the year.en-US St. Lucie County passed its ordinance in en-US 2014. The city of Port St. Lucie has a similar en-US ordinance, as does Fort Pierce. Both were en-US passed in 2014.en-US Martin Countys ordinance took effect in en-US 2011, amended and strengthened in 2014.en-US While the various ordinances contain en-US some differences regarding exemptions, en-US licensing, and specific fertilizer content, the en-US general principles are the same.en-US Through the end of September, do not en-US fertilize with any product containing nitroen-US -en-US gen or phosphorous. Both of these nutrients en-US are illegal during the rainy season for both en-US turf grass and landscape plants.en-US St. Lucie Countys ordinance en-US allows phosphorus products to en-US be applied only if a soil test indien-US -en-US cates a deficiency.en-US There asre Florida-friendly en-US yard products containing iron en-US and other micronutrients that en-US you can use, and you can comen-US -en-US post. To be in compliance, the en-US fertilizer must contain no phosen-US-en-US phorous. The fertilizer content en-US is listed on each label as three en-US nsumbers. This corresponds to en-US the percentage of nitrogen, en-US phosphorous, and potash, en-US respectively, or N-P-K.en-US Another general rule is that en-US fertilizer should never be applied within 10 en-US feet of any wetland or water body, or from en-US the top of a seawall. Spreader deflector en-US shields are required when fertilizing using en-US rotary spreaders.en-US Martin Countys ordinance is even stronen-US -en-US ger, requiring a 25-foot fertilizer-free buffer en-US from all water bodies.en-US Fertilizer may not be applied, spilled, or en-US otherwise deposited on any impervious suren-US -en-US faces. Fertilizer must be kept out of stormen-US -en-US water drains, ditches, and all water bodies. en-US Grass clippings, vegetative material or en-US debris must also be kept out of stormwater en-US drains, ditches, water bodies, wetlands, en-US sidewalks and roadways.en-US Commercial fertilizer applicators are en-US required to carry in their possession evien-US-en-US dence that they have completed a training en-US program in the Florida-friendly Best Manen-US -en-US agement Practices for Protection of Water en-US Resources by the Green Industries offered en-US by the Florida Department of Environmenen-US -en-US tal Protection through the University of en-US Florida Extension Florida-Friendly Landen-US -en-US scapes program, or an approved equivalent.en-US Even outside the ban period, you should en-US never fertilize before a rain. Rain does not en-US set in fertilizer, it just washes it away. And en-US you should only use fertilizers that contain en-US at least 50 percent slow release nitrogen and en-US that contain no phosphorous. Florida soils en-US are naturally rich in phosphorous.en-US Stormwater officials recommend fertilizen-US -en-US ing only twice a year, in October near the en-US end of the growing season, and in April at en-US the start of the growing season. Better yet, en-US replace grass and exotic plants with Florida en-US native plants that require little or no fertilizen-US-en-US ing.en-US For more information, visit en-US www.martin.en-US fl.us/Fertilizer en-US oren-US www.stlucieco.gov. www.dansfancity.com CUT OUT THIS AD FORIN-STORE DISCOUNTS PARTS, SERVICE & INSTALLATION AVAILABLE M-Sat 9a-6p Sun 11a-4p LARGEST SELECTION OF INDOOR & OUTDOOR FANS ANYWHERE! 7 7 2335-8625 10762 S. The en-US solution is easy contact your representaen-US -en-US tives about your issues of concern.en-US The current U.S. administration and conen-US-en-US gress needs to answer to us, their constituen-US -en-US ents: that is their job: to represent the peoen-US -en-US ple who elected them. They need to be en-US accountable to us and to make sure that en-US happens, we have to be part of the solution. en-US Environmental and consumer protection en-US issues affect all of us. The Consumer Proen-US-en-US tection Bureau has gone the way of Pruitts en-US Environmental Protection Agency --en-US neglecting or forgetting the most important en-US part of the agencies titles: Protection. They en-US have not been doing their job. en-US We need to tell them (via phone, fax, mail, en-US email or in person) what we expect of them, en-US ask them: Will you be a voice and a force en-US for protection for consumers and for our en-US environment? Will you be holding Town en-US Hall Meetings? If so, when, where? If not, en-US why not? Town Hall Meetings are where en-US representatives actually meet and converse en-US with their constituents. Does your represenen-US-en-US tative do that?en-US13 State Constitution en-US amendmentsen-USThe first two times I saw the amendments en-US published in a local newspaper, I read en-US through the article twice once increduen-US-en-US lously the second more studiously and en-US took notes to try to understand what was en-US being proposed to no avail.en-US The June 15, 2018 edition of the Homeen-US -en-US town News was the third publication Ive en-US seen. There is no understanding or reasonen-US -en-US ing behind these proposals presented as en-US they are, other than to confuse, obfuscate, en-US and trick voters into voting for some things en-US / rules no one wants, and no legislator wants en-US to be blamed for. This is an example of goven-US -en-US ernment at its worst.en-US I STRONGLY urge every voter to vote en-US NO on all 13 items. None of these need to en-US be elevated to the level of incorporation into en-US the states constitution, but should be en-US addressed individually by the legislature, en-US where each elected official must take a puben-US -en-US lic stand for or against each item. Vote en-US NO to the process which only serves to en-US benefit, via power and/or money, to a few, en-US and takes rights / power away from the peoen-US -en-US ple of the state of Florida.en-USWhy set up even en-US more new homes?en-USI find it ironic that the City Council of en-US Sebastian just agreed to increase the Equivaen-US -en-US lent Residential Unit (ERU) for double the en-US current rate without any proven statistics to en-US justify that increase. They claim that the en-US infrastructure needs to be repaired, in the en-US near future, then vote to add 500 new homes en-US to these storm drains they claim need repair.en-US As for the building of new homes in en-US Sebastian I am not aware of any follow up en-US on the inspection or relocation of any en-US Gopher Tortoises in my neighborhood en-US where several new homes have been built. en-US The contractors just came in with their bull en-US dozes and plowed all the foliage and trees en-US down. Now, Sebastian has approved zoning en-US for another 500 new homes. What are they en-US thinking? Drive down most streets in Sebasen-US -en-US tian and you will find many older homes for en-US sale. Some of these homes have been for sale en-US for months and/or years. Drive around and en-US you will see many vacant areas where develen-US -en-US opments were started and left unfinished. en-US We have many empty or nearly empty strip en-US malls and Sebastian is allowing new strip en-USNine year-old en-US Jovy Duprey en-US climbs en-US towards the en-US top of the en-US carrot during en-US a visit to the en-US Children's en-US Museum of en-US the Treasure en-US Coast.en-USPhoto courtesy of en-US MaryAnn Ketchamen-USmalls be constructed. From my perspective en-US the only ones who benefit from all this en-US needless construction are the construction en-US companies and the City of Sebastian. Maybe en-US it's time for the people we elected to repreen-US -en-US sent us give us a say in what they seem to en-US think is good for our community.en-USUse bats and en-US fish against pestsen-USThe rain has been good for mosquitoes. en-US But our first line of defense should not be en-US poisoning the environment.en-US Make sure there is no standing water in en-USthe neighborhoods. Ponds can be stocked en-US with fish (e.g., Gambusia) that eat mosquito en-US eggs and larvae. en-US Put up a bat house. One bat can eat more en-US than 1,000 mosquitoes in one night. Poison en-US should be the last and little used option.en-USSomeone else's life en-US depends on you driving safeen-USDriving in Florida has added to my en-US peeves.en-US Making a stop at a "stop" sign means you en-US stop before the sign then proceed with cauen-US-en-US tion.en-US The rod on the left side of the steering en-US wheel is your turn signal. Most Florida driven-US-en-US ers don't know it exists.en-US To all our "disabled persons" with a parken-US -en-US ing identification permit you place on your en-US mirror: if you read it, it states "remove en-US before driving vehicle." This is so it does not en-US block your vision.en-US As far as MPH signs . no one reads them. en-US They drive at what ever speed they want.en-US I could go but I'll end by saying drive safe en-US . someone's life depends on you.en-USHometown News keeping it localen-USThank you so much for the Hometown en-US News. en-US 8 en-UStold the Commission changes were minor to en-US the first four mixed-use buildings housing en-US 18 residential units and 38,039 square feet of en-US limited retail and office adjacent to County en-US Road 707.en-US The major development master site plan en-US and phasing plans were originally approved en-US by the Board of County Commissioners on en-US Aug. 4, 2015 for development of a mixed-en-US use project to be constructed in six phases, en-US she said. The applicant has proposed in this en-US Phase 1 application to make minor changes en-US to the boundary of Phase 1 to accommodate en-US infrastructure and installation, to shift some en-US of the residential units between buildings en-US and to make minor changes to building en-US footprints, which necessitated revisions to en-US the master site plan and phasing plan for en-US consistency.en-US A Stuart attorney for developer SFI Marien-US -en-US na Stuart TRS LLC, Bob Raines, emphasized en-US the support of the community during the en-US quasi-judicial hearing and insisted the proen-US -en-US posed development complied with all counen-US-en-US ty rules and regulations. en-US I just wanted to again point out that were en-US requesting approval of a revised major masen-US -en-US ter site plan and phasing plan and final site en-US plan and this is under straight zoning, so en-US were not asking for any variances or relief en-US from any of the policies or rules or regulaen-US -en-US tions of Martin County, he said. Its en-US important to understand that were here en-US today to just prove that we meet all the rules en-US and regulations through competent suben-US -en-US stantial evidence and testimony. This projen-US -en-US ect reflects the concept created by the neighen-US-en-US borhood volunteers during public meetings en-US in 2000 that eventually became part of the en-US Rio Development Master Site Plan adopted en-US in 2001, and it contains most of the elements en-US desired by the neighborhood.en-US Commissioner Ed Fielding has opposed en-US the project for the last few years and said he en-US was deeply concerned about water quality en-US in the St. Lucie River Estuary because the en-US project had no plans to contain stormwater en-US on site. en-US Were spending millions of dollars to en-US protect the estuary, the federal governments en-US spending billions of dollars, and it looks to en-US me like were fixing to do something thats en-US going to significantly adversely impact the en-US estuary and water quality, he said. My deden-US-en-US ication has been water quality, and I see you en-US guys as a disrupter of that dedication, a en-US major disrupter I firmly believe you ought en-US to fix your topography so the water goes en-US back the other way.en-US Commissioner Doug Smith ultimately en-US backed the latest changes but not before en-US expressing concerns that the developer had en-US not reached out to commissioners, and the en-US county itself had not required oversight by en-US the Community Redevelopment Agency. He en-US also feared the project would turn out like a en-US Jensen Beach project he said still bothered en-US him because it ultimately failed to meet en-US CRA criteria. en-US I havent talked to the applicant in five en-US years, he fumed. Since the last time this en-US came before us, Ive had no communication en-US whatsoever with the applicant. I dont think en-US thats good Im supportive of moving foren-US -en-US ward today, but Im really struggling with en-US the entire process and with the absolute lack en-US of involvement at our level. I think its unacen-US -en-US ceptable, and what concerns me is were en-US heading into a significant project that means en-US a lot to Rio.en-US Commissioner Harold Jenkins said he en-US understood but didnt necessarily agree with en-US Commissioner Smiths concerns before en-US making the motion to approve the latest en-US changes to the project. He also admitting to en-US having met with the applicant and his attoren-US -en-US ney Bob Raines. en-US I now understand this issue you have, he en-US said. I know that we cant be completely en-US aligned, but at least I get it. I have personalen-US -en-US ly spent quite a bit of time with Mr. Raines en-US and his client and I understand this project. en-US Ive spent a lot of time with staff, and I feel en-US very confident with it.en-US Commissioner Sarah Heard seconded the en-US motion, admitting she would not have en-US approved the original Rio Community en-US Redevelopment Plan had she been in office en-US at the time. en-US I think its inconsistent with the existing en-US Rio development, and I think some of these en-US very problems that were talking about right en-US now were foreseeable, she said. But these en-US are the rules we have now, and Ive bound by en-US law to abide by them. So whether I like this en-US project or not, there are rules that say its en-US compliant. Staff has gone through due proen-US -en-US cess, staff has reviewed it, and these watered-en-US down rules we have in Rio make this project en-US compliant.en-US The Commission subsequently voted to en-US approve the changes 4-1, with Commissionen-US-en-US er Fielding dissenting. When completed, en-US Rio Town Center will also boast a 140-slip en-US marina. Beware of scammers! en-USIen-USt seems like just when you think youve en-US got things figured out, the scammers go en-US and change the rules! An alarming trend en-US lately in computer scams is the growing en-US practice of actual 800 support numbers en-US connecting you to people overseas intent on en-US scamming you out of your money rather en-US than to qualified support people who even en-US work for the company that you are calling. en-US What I mean is I am seeing a lot more en-US instances of people having problem with a en-US product or service and then calling the 800 en-US number for that company that is listed on en-US their website or on their bill or whatever but en-US instead of getting somebody that works for en-US that company, they get someone who en-US immediately start steering the caller into en-US the old Oh, your computer has been en-US hacked and is infected with malware. en-US speech.en-US No, it hasnt been hacked, no it isnt en-US infected with malware and no, you dont en-US work for XYZ company! If a call ever goes en-US in this direction, hang up or you are about en-US to get scammed.en-US One on my callers was relating to me an en-US incident where he was having a problem en-US getting his video streaming device to en-US connect to his WiFi. Now this is one of en-US those little things that plug into your TV en-US it had nothing to do with his computer en-US whatsoever but that seemed to be lost on en-US the guy on the other end of the phone who en-US immediately began insisting that his en-US computer was hacked and loaded with en-US malware and they would need to clean it en-US before that could continue. en-US It used to be a pretty good rule of thumb en-US that if you made the call, you were safe. For en-US instance, if you get an email from the en-US bank telling you your account has a en-US problem, you call the bank yourself you en-US dont deal with it over email. Calling them en-US yourself carries a good faith assumption en-US that the number you are calling is actually en-US going to get you to the company you are en-US trying to call rather than scammers. It en-US makes it feel safer to disclose private non en-US public information. When a big company en-US puts an 800 support number on their en-US website that leads to one of these scammers en-US it makes it that much easier to fall prey. en-US Another trend that has been making the en-US rounds on the internet is the tainted link en-US that brings you to a fake blue screen error en-US with a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo en-US and an 800 number to call. The page tries to en-US tell you your machine has suffered from a en-US critical error or some such but the big en-US giveaway is the 800 number no legitimate en-US Windows or Blue Screen Error ever ever en-US ever displays a phone number! en-US If one day you are surfing the web, maybe en-US checking email and suddenly your browser en-US shows an alarming error message, you cant en-US click out of it, you cant close it and there is en-US a phone number to call to get it fixed, dont en-US fall for it! If you do they will attempt to en-US separate you from as much money as they en-US can talk you out of. en-US But whats a guy to do? You cant click en-US out, you cant close it, the message says bad en-US things will happen if you turn it off, so how en-US do you get out of it when your machine gets en-US stuck like this?en-US Well first, remember the message itself is en-US a scam. That means you cant trust anything en-US in the message so its unlikely anything bad en-US will happen if you reboot. en-US Rebooting will shut everything down and en-US reset everything (essentially) and that en-US should break you out of that loop but it en-US doesnt have to be that sloppy. You can use en-US the task manager to kill the stuck window en-US can that should break you out of the loop en-US and allow you to regain control of the en-US machine. To launch task manager, right en-US click on the task bar at the bottom of your en-US Windows desktop and then left click Start en-US Task Manager in the little pop up window. en-US Then, in Task Manager, find the browser en-US window in the list of running applications, en-US highlight it and click the End Task button. en-US You can usually find the right item in the en-US list of running applications because it will en-US have the offending webpages name listed en-US next to your browsers icon. en-US Once you end the task you should see the en-US browser window finally close and you can en-US now reboot gracefully with a normal shut en-US down and restart. en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. en-US 9 en-USMARTIN COUNTY Twenty-five years en-US ago, Martin Countys Healthy Start Coalien-US-en-US tion opened its doors. The genesis of a stateen-US -en-US wide network of community organizations en-US focused on reducing Floridas high infant en-US mortality rate was a passion project of Goven-US -en-US ernor Lawton Chiles and First Lady Rhea en-US Chiles. en-US Celebrating the 25th anniversary was the en-US focus of this years Healthy Start Luncheon en-US held May 18 at Pipers Landing Yacht Club en-US in Palm City. Additionally, it was the first en-US year anniversary of Executive Director en-US Samantha Suffich. en-US Suffich recalled her first year with Healthy en-US Start, which she said, came with its chalen-US -en-US lenges. However, all the difficulties were en-US handled as a collaborative effort with comen-US -en-US munity members and a number of achieveen-US -en-US ments were realized. Leading the list was the en-US newly minted maternity leave policy, which en-US allows for six weeks of paid leave. The orgaen-US -en-US nization hopes to be a model to other en-US employers in the community. en-US Dancing with the Martin Stars in Septemen-US -en-US ber raised $140,000. Dr. Brian Moriarty en-US with Loving Chiropractic, the overall winen-US-en-US ner, raised $30,000 and has helped to create en-US a new pilot program for chiropractic care en-US for pregnant healthy start moms. en-US A doula program is being piloted through en-US the doulas at Bell House Birth Services with en-US significant support from Samantha, who has en-US five years experience as a doula. The proen-US -en-US gram provides emotional and physical supen-US-en-US port for expectant mothers during labor en-US who do not have a support person at the en-US time of delivery. Eligible healthy start moms en-US may be homeless, military spouses, en-US estranged teenage mothers, or victims of en-US domestic or sexual violence. en-US Additionally, the Prenatal Outreach Cenen-US -en-US ter expanded to Indiantown. The number of en-US pregnant women entering prenatal care in en-US the first trimester has increased to 73 peren-US -en-US cent from 56.9 percent since the Outreach en-US Centers inception. In recent months, 97 en-US percent of pregnant women and 100 percent en-US of newborns were screened for risk factors en-US that could lead to poor birth outcomes like en-US premature birth, low-birth weight, and en-US infant mortality. In Martin County, out of en-US 1,260 babies born, more than 1000 mothers en-US and more than 600 babies received healthy en-US start services. en-US Sarah Gosney, the first director of Healthy en-US Start, a position she held for 13 years, remien-US-en-US nisced about the early years of the organizaen-US -en-US tion. She explained how each coalition proen-US -en-US vides services specifically for their area. As en-US a result, she developed the Father & Child en-US Resource Center. en-US Lisa Kieffer, manager of the Betty Moore en-US Prenatal Outreach Center since its beginen-US -en-US ning in 2007, thanked community partners en-US that have helped to make the Outreach Cenen-US -en-US ter such a success. She spoke about the seren-US -en-US vices that have helped more than 1,500 en-US women in Martin County access prenatal en-US care. Their diaper pantry gives out nearly en-US 10,000 diapers a month and has been an en-US invaluable service for mothers. en-US Outgoing Board President Dr. Teena en-US White was recognized for her years of seren-US Stop on a Dime Trust A. en-US 10 en-USfederal regulations including a lead manageen-US-en-US ment plan filed with the State of Florida. en-US Principal Planner Peter Walden provided an en-US overview of the amendment, which he en-US admitted was a collaborative effort between en-US county staff and club representatives.en-US The request is related to a revised final en-US site plan application of an existing outdoor en-US shooting range, he said. The existing site en-US plan consists of a shotgun shooting range, en-US clubhouse and associated facilities on 41.4 en-US acres of a 645-acre parcel in western Martin en-US County. The owner plans to establish a en-US sporting clay course on natural areas en-US throughout the acreage and is seeking peren-US -en-US mitting for additional buildings and site en-US plan expansion. The amended text is proen-US -en-US posed to clarify the parameters of a sporting en-US clay course and provide regulations for the en-US safe and environmentally sound operation en-US of a sporting clay course in Martin County.en-US Commissioner Ed Fielding, who cast one en-US of the dissenting votes on the amendment, en-US wanted clarification on safety and buffer en-US zones since he thought 50 feet was too close en-US to neighboring property owners for comen-US -en-US fort.en-US What I want to know is, if I own the land en-US I was putting this in, what am I going to en-US expect, how much buffer and safety and all en-US of that am I going to put in? he asked. en-US Mr. Walden then went into a detailed en-US explanation on the differences between a en-US traditional shooting range and a clay pigeon en-US range and insisted safety would be a compoen-US-en-US nent addressed during the formal site plan en-US process.en-US These are designed to be very flexible en-US where people can take golf carts out to the en-US woods and have mobile stations set up that en-US would present targets in a more natural seten-US -en-US ting, he said. Every application would go en-US through a site-planning process, so we en-US would analyze their safety precautions at en-US that time. This is an existing shooting range en-US thats been operating and weve had no comen-US -en-US plaints or incidents with safety as of yet; en-US they seem to be a very well-run organization en-US with a good established set of rules and regen-US-en-US ulations for their clientele. en-US Commissioner Sarah Heard cast the other en-US dissenting vote saying she preferred the lonen-US -en-US ger 900-feet distance of traditional shooting en-US ranges due to the safety aspect.en-US Thats why we provide minimum stanen-US -en-US dards in order to protect our residents and en-US resources, so are we doing the best job that en-US we can of protecting our residents and en-US resources? she asked. Im not opposed to en-US this use, but it needs to be as safe as possible, en-US and 50 feet away is not safe.en-US Local Planning Agency Chairman Jim en-US Moir cast the lone dissenting vote during en-US that Boards 3-1 recommendation for en-US approval of the amendment last April on en-US similar grounds.en-US Its a lot of activity and a lot of noise, and en-US reducing the setback requirements isnt so en-US much just for this club, but its for future en-US clubs that are going to perhaps come into en-US this community, he said April 19. I think en-US reducing setback requirements is not in the en-US countys best interests. en-US South Florida Shooting Club General en-US Manager Joe Fasulo attempted to allay the en-US fears of the dissenting commissioners en-US during the latest meeting with a description en-US of the limitations of shotgun shells.en-US The difference between a rifle or a pistol en-US shooting range is theyre shooting single en-US projectiles, and the distance goes much, en-US much further than a shotgun, he said. We en-US limit the size of shot to seven-and-a-half en-US shot, and to break a target, the maximum en-US distance is 80 yards. You wont break a target en-US beyond that with seven-and-a-half shot and en-US a shotgun. It will disperse and fall: Thats the en-US main difference.en-US Mr. Fasulos explanation failed to conen-US -en-US vince Commissioner Heard, who admitted en-US the South Florida Shooting Club ran an en-US excellent facility. en-US Theres a world of difference between en-US 2,500 feet and 50, she emphasized. Were en-US not designing these standards for you; were en-US designing these standards for anyone who is en-US going to be asking for permission to create a en-US sporting clay course in Martin County. So en-US therefore those minimum standards have to en-US be very, very protective in order to protect en-US everybody: to protect you and to protect the en-US shooters and to protect the people who are en-US off-site. en-US Senior Assistant Senior County Attorney en-US Krista Storey also jumped into the fray, tellen-US -en-US ing Commissioner Heard that both the en-US applicant and the County Commission en-US could agree to more distance during the site en-US approval process.en-US With the agreement of the property en-US owner and the concerns raised by the Board, en-US property owners can agree to an additional en-US requirements as part of a site-plan approven-US -en-US al, she explained. Ive been here 20 years, en-US and property owners between the Board of en-US County Commissioners have agreed to en-US additional requirements.en-US In response to further fears expressed by en-US Commissioner Fielding -who said hed en-US been burnt by shot gun fall while quail en-US hunting in the past -Mr. Walden empha en-US-en-US sized the aiming direction of hunters near en-US the property lines.en-US These firing positions may be 50 feet en-US from the property line, but theyre faced in en-US towards their property, he said. They are en-US to carry breached weapons only, they load en-US them when theyre in firing position and en-US then fire in and away from the property en-US line.en-US Commissioner Doug Smith subsequently en-US made the motion to accept staffs recomen-US -en-US mendation on the amendment.en-US I have been to this facility many times en-US and I have no doubt that safety is the very en-US first thing that comes to anybodys mind, he en-US said. I also have the utmost confidence in en-US our staff that when theyre doing a final site-en-US plan review, that they will use their best en-US knowledge and their best understanding of en-US the code and whats being applied.en-US Commissioner Harold Jenkins seconding en-US the motion, and before the vote, Chairman en-US Ciampi asked for assurance that staff felt en-US comfortable with the safety level of the minen-US -en-US imum distances of the amendment.en-US Given the minimum lot size and the zonen-US-en-US ing and the site-planning process, we feel en-US comfortable with it, Mr. Walden responden-US -en-US ed. en-US The Commission will hold the second en-US hearing on the clay shooting amendment en-US during the July 10 meeting in the Commisen-US -en-US sion Chambers at 2401 S.E. Car dealers have blocked your right to sue en-USEarl Stewart is the owner and general en-US manager of Earl Stewart Toyota in North en-US Palm Beach. The dealership is located at en-US 1215 N. Even en-US worse, you also are prohibited from even en-US taking that car dealer to arbitration unless en-US you write a demand letter first!en-US What is arbitration anyway?en-US The average person does not understand en-US what arbitration is, much less know that en-US they agreed to substitute this process for en-US their right to sue when they bought their en-US last car. Arbitration allows individuals that en-US are employed by an arbitration company to en-US decide who is right in a dispute, you or the en-US car dealer. Professional arbiters can be en-US retired judges or anyone that the arbitration en-US company decides is qualified. Because car en-US dealers use the arbitration company often en-US and because car dealers determine the en-US compensation to these companies, there is a en-US good chance that the arbitrators are en-US inclined to side with the hand that feeds it.en-US You cant even file for arbitration unless en-US you write a demand letter to the dealer en-US which must contain specific information as en-US prescribed by Florida statute 501.98. This is en-US a summary of that law:en-US Florida Statutes require that, at least 30 en-US days before bringing any claim against a en-US motor vehicle dealer for an unfair or en-US deceptive trade practice, a consumer must en-US provide the dealer with a written demand en-US letter detailing the name, address, and en-US telephone number of the consumer, the en-US name and address of the dealer; a descripen-US -en-US tion of the facts that serve as the basis for en-US the claim; the amount of damages; and en-US copies of any documents in the possession en-US of the consumer which relate to the claim. en-US Such notice must be delivered by the United en-US States Postal Service or by a nationally en-US recognized carrier, return receipt requested, en-US to the address where the subject vehicle was en-US purchased or leased or where the subject en-US transaction occurred, or an address at en-US which the dealer regularly conducts en-US business. If you would like to read the en-US detail of this law, you can access it online at en-US https://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Staten-US-en-US utes/2013/501.98.en-US If you hire a lawyer because you believe a en-US car dealer has taken advantage of you, en-US youre not eligible for reimbursement of any en-US legal fees unless you have sent the demand en-US letter exactly as described above. Therefore en-US most lawyers are reluctant to assist you en-US because they know that the fees they would en-US normally be entitled to are at riskboth en-US because of the arbitration requirement and en-US the demand letter.en-US What Ive described is just one more en-US reason why you should be extremely careful en-US when you buy or lease a car. In the back of en-US our minds most of us believe that when we en-US are doing business with a car dealer, or en-US anybody else, if we are taken advantage of en-US we have the right to sue to force the en-US company to make things right. This is not en-US true with 99.9 percent of car dealers. You en-US should realize this and be even more careful en-US when you purchase a car. Access my blog en-US for articles on every facet of doing business en-US with a car dealer. There are hundreds of en-US articles accessible in the archives of www.en-US EarlStewartOnCars.com. en-US 12 en-USJACKSONVILLE As the summer temen-US -en-US peratures increase across Florida, so do calls en-US to poison control. The Florida/USVI Poison en-US Information Center Jacksonville is offeren-US -en-US ing some tips to keep Floridians safe this en-US summer. en-US The summer season sees the biggest en-US boost in calls to poison control centers, en-US because people are enjoying the outdoors en-US and the kids are out of school, said director en-US Dr. Jay L. Schauben. This leads to an en-US increased number of poison exposures, en-US especially for pool chemical accidents, en-US snake, spider, and insect bites, as well as en-US aquatic stings. en-US The poison control center staff want you en-US to remember these summer safety tips: en-US Pool Chemical Safety: Calls regarding en-US pool chemicals increase more than 70% in en-US the summer months. Ensure you are in a en-US well-ventilated area when using pool chemien-US-en-US cals. Follow the product instructions careen-US -en-US fully. Do not store chemicals where flamen-US -en-US mable items may mix with them (i.e. pool en-US chemicals en-US and fertilizen-US-en-US er). Never en-US mix pool en-US chemicals en-US because it en-US could create en-US a toxic gas. en-US Always keep en-US pool chemien-US-en-US cals stored en-US up and away from children. en-US Insect Repellent Usage: Calls regarding en-US insect repellent double during summer en-US months. Read and follow product instrucen-US -en-US tions carefully; some repellents are not en-US meant to be applied to the skin. Do not en-US apply onto a childs hands, eyes, mouth, or en-US cut/irritated skin; spray repellent onto en-US adults hands then apply to childs face. Do en-US not spray on childrens hands because they en-US tend to rub their eyes or mouths. Do not en-US use combination sunscreen/insect repellent en-US products. Sunscreen needs to be reapplied en-US every two hours, but repellent should not be en-US reapplied. DEET should not be used on en-US children younger than two months old. en-US After returning indoors, wash treated skin en-US with soap and water. en-US Snakes and Spider Bites: Snake and spider en-US bite calls increase more than 30% over the en-US summer months. Call the poison control en-US center at 1-800-222-1222 (or 911, if en-US unarousable, convulsing, or stopped breathen-US -en-US ing) if you believe you have been bitten by en-US one of the six venomous snakes of Florida: en-US coral snake, cottonmouth (water moccasin), en-US Eastern diamondback rattlesnake, copperen-US -en-US head, or canebrake (timber) rattlesnake. If en-US bitten by a snake, remove jewelry and tight en-US clothes, immobilize the extremity if possien-US -en-US ble, keep affected area at or below the heart, en-US and wash the area gently. DO NOT feed the en-US victim, make cuts or place ice on the bitten en-US extremity, or apply a tourniquet. If bitten en-US by a spider, call the poison control center en-US immediately. en-US Other Outdoor Hazards: Jellyfish and en-US other aquatic life bite and sting calls spike en-US nearly 40% during summer. At the beach, en-US bring a spray bottle with vinegar in it in case en-US of jellyfish stings. Call the poison control en-US center if youre stung for specific treatment en-US advice. Treat all wild mushrooms as poien-US-en-US sonous unless you are absolutely certain en-US they are safe to eat. Initially apply a baking en-US soda paste to any insect stings, including en-US fire ants, bees, wasps, caterpillars. Then call en-US the poison control center for more specific en-US treatment advice. en-US Proper Pesticide Use: Read the entire en-US label and follow product instructions; make en-US sure product is properly stored and disposed en-US of according to label. Keep all pesticides in en-US their original containers. Avoid using en-US products that require leaving powder or pelen-US-en-US lets in areas where children or pets may have en-US access to them. en-US The mission of the Florida/USVI Poison en-US Information Center Jacksonville is to proen-US -en-US vide exceptional care for individual patients en-US and for supporting public health through en-US information, surveillance, education, and en-US research. Experts staff the Poison Help en-US Hotline at (800) 222-1222 that provides free, en-US confidential, expert medical advice 24 hours en-US a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year en-US from toxicology specialists, including nursen-US -en-US es, pharmacists, physicians, and poison en-US information providers. en-US To learn more, visit en-US floridapoisoncontrol.en-US org, en-US like us on Facebook, and follow us on en-US Twitteren-US (@FloridaPoison). They en-US should also be brought indoors or secured en-US close to the house. With a few common en-US sense actions, you can help save your en-US valuable outdoor belongings. I will have en-US more hurricane tips for your yard in en-US coming articles!en-US Squirrels and raccoon can be a common en-US sight in most gardens. These cute but en-US sometimes mischievous critters can be fun en-US to watch but they can also be a menace if en-US you keep your trash outdoors. en-US The common raccoon is the all too en-US familiar masked bandit that can be found en-US throughout most of the U.S. Raccoon can en-US be found almost anywhere water and food en-US is located and their range extends almost en-US anywhere in the United States. These furry en-US mammals are about the size of a medium en-US sized dog and as the mask implies, they love en-US to borrow stuff from your yard. Like man, en-US raccoon have five toes and it uses the whole en-US sole of their feet to walk, just like us. Their en-US hands are remarkably agile and they can en-US perform many of the same tasks as we do en-US like opening a zipper or even removing a en-US shoestring from a shoe. en-US Raccoon are survivors and warriors. en-US They can live and adjust when their woods en-US are cut down for development or they will en-US adapt if you fill in their favorite watering en-US hole. These cute creatures love garbage cans en-US and will almost without a doubt get your en-US trash before the trash man does. Your best en-US defense is to keep your trash in the garage en-US or build a special locking (and I mean en-US locking) structure to store the cans in. en-US One of the most enjoyable sights to see is en-US a family of newborn raccoon playing in en-US your yard. These cute fuzzy balls are just en-US like kids in the fact that they want to touch en-US and explore everything. The raccoon mates en-US once a season and can produce a litter of en-US anywhere from two to seven cubs in a litter. en-US The male raccoon only stays around about en-US a week and then he is off to find another en-US mate. The female raises the litter and if you en-US watch the behavior, you will soon see that en-US they are actually very good mothers. en-US Raccoon have a life expectancy of about en-US five years in the wild and can live as long as en-US 20 years in captivity. Many people rescue en-US orphaned baby raccoon and keep them as en-US pets until they are able to be again released en-US into the wild. en-US Squirrels are another common sight in en-US most yards throughout Florida. This animal en-US is very special in that it has well adapted to en-US being around man. They can live on both en-US natural foods and handouts. Feeding these en-US cute creatures is an enjoyable pastime for en-US many people while others curse their en-US presence because they love to raid your bird en-US feeder. The best defense is to feed the en-US squirrels separately while also purchasing a en-US squirrel-proof bird feeder.en-US What makes these fuzzy animals so en-US famous is their ability to put the most en-US trained gymnast to shame. This animal can en-US amaze and entertain us with its ability to en-US walk the tightrope and jump from tree to en-US tree with amazing accuracy and agility. en-US They are very smart creatures as they en-US usually figure out how to override the en-US mechanism of most squirrel proof bird en-US feeders over a period of time. en-US The squirrels diet is varied and can en-US include anything from nuts (their favorite) en-US all the way to pizza. These amazing en-US creatures have adapted well to our own en-US eating habits.en-US The most common death for a squirrel is en-US not predators or old age; its being hit by a en-US car. If a squirrel survives his first year he en-US will probably live about another five years en-US before he dies. Squirrels in captivity can live en-US as long as 20 years.en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape. en-US 17 en-USMen-USost people have no idea how en-US special honey really is.Its not just en-US an ancient sweetener for wines en-US and pastry. The history dates back almost en-US 8,000 years to rock paintings in Spain en-US depicting honey robbers getting honey en-US from trees while using smoke.en-US Honey, if stored properly, can almost last en-US forever. Honey found in Egyptian tombs en-US over 3,000 years old was still edible. The en-US Romans used honey to heal wounds from en-US battles. Hannibal used honey and vinegar to en-US feed his troop when they crossed the Alps. en-US During World War I, honey was used as an en-US antibiotic to bind the wounds of soldiers in en-US battle. The healing power of honey is being en-US studied and is becoming better understood.en-US Honey bees are essential to life on earth. en-US It has been projected if all honey bees were en-US to perish, in four years the food supply on en-US earth would be in serious trouble.en-US There are more than 300 varieties of en-US honey and, here in Florida, we are fortunate en-US to have access to many different types of en-US honey. en-US Blueberry honey has the highest en-US antibacterial properties, and buckwheat en-US honey is high in antioxidants and cleanses en-US the liver. Eucalyptus honey is good for your en-US respiratory health. en-US Honey is antibacterial and antiseptic. en-US Raw, organic honey contains hydrogen en-US peroxide that is released when it comes into en-US contact with moisture. Raw honey as a en-US sweetener doesnt cause the blood sugar to en-US spike. It allows a much healthier gradual en-US increase in blood sugar levels. And we only en-US need a teaspoon of honey to make a en-US difference. en-US As a chef, it is really nice to use an en-US ingredient to cook with that is healthy for en-US you and also tastes great. en-US 18 en-USSen-USometimes, the small places are easiest en-US to overlook, particularly when theyre en-US off the beaten path or more than a few en-US minutes off the interstate. My wife Gloria en-US and I had only once or twice driven up U.S. en-US 1 from Sebastian to Melbourne and only en-US vaguely remembered the highway skirting en-US the eastern edge of the Indian River and en-US being able to see across to the barrier island. en-US Something told me the area held a special en-US charm, and we finally got to experience that en-US when we spent a recent weekend at Capt en-US Hirams Resort nestled along the western en-US shore of the Indian River Lagoon. en-US Although there are other places to lodge en-US in Sebastian, Capt Hirams is one of only a en-US very few that actually have rooms overlooken-US -en-US ing the enchanting waterway, where we en-US enjoyed awesome sunrises on both mornen-US -en-US ings from our balcony. Our room lay just a en-US minutes walk from the Sandbar Beach Club, en-US a little bit of the Bahamas and a slice of the en-US Caribbean wedged in the northeast corner en-US of Indian River County. This open-air en-US tropical complex is one massive beach party en-US for those who love the coast, and it takes on en-US a whole new sizzle in the evenings with its en-US nightly entertainment. There are even a en-US couple of tables and stools down in the en-US shallow part of the Lagoon for those who en-US just cant seem to drag themselves out of the en-US water long enough for a drink or snack. It en-US was there at Capt Hirams Adventure Center en-US that we checked out our tandem kayak for a en-US short paddle in the river our first morning en-US (included with the resorts $5 per person, en-US per night resort fee, along with bicycles and en-US paddleboards). The fascinating thing about en-US kayaking off the coast of Sebastian is that en-US kayakers can actually choose a destination. en-US This part of the Indian River Lagoon is en-US dotted with numerous sandy islands perfect en-US for a picnic or overnight camping. Although en-US Gloria is not much of a kayaker (I introen-US -en-US duced her to the sport in Miami many years en-US ago), we did manage to make it to the closest en-US islet, locally referred to as Shipwreck Island, en-US probably due to at least one of the derelict en-US vessels we noticed cast upon the glittering en-US white sand. We briefly stepped ashore for en-US photographs before making the short paddle en-US back to the resort. en-US The most charming part of the Sebastian en-US waterfront is its extreme walkability. This is en-US one of the very few non-urban places where en-US weve been able to park the car for the en-US weekend and forget it. Most of Sebastians en-US downtown area attractions are within easy en-US walking distance. Early the first morning en-US after photographing the sunrise, I headed en-US out walking on Indian River Drive in both en-US directions to see what was within easy reach en-US of the resort. Of course I passed several en-US waterside restaurants featuring massive en-US decks overlooking the tranquil waterfront, a en-US handful of public piers and decks extending en-US out over the water and some very unique en-US sculptures and monuments around en-US Riverview Park. Mel Fishers Treasures en-US Museum & Gift Shop lay only a few blocks en-US away, a small but fascinating tribute to the en-US man who helped put the treasure in en-US Treasure Coast. Not only did we see en-US multiple pods of dolphins and a sea turtle, en-US but we actually came upon a herd of en-US manatees (shockingly in mid-June!) en-US frolicking and cavorting near one of the en-US islands. The tour took us within site of the en-US Sebastian Inlet State Park where we saw en-US motorhomes and camping trailers parked en-US on the shores of the Lagoon, and close en-US enough to the A1A Bridge over the inlet to en-US take pictures. Although it was a mid-day en-US cruise, the wind blowing through the en-US covered vessel kept us comfortably cool, and en-US we both agreed the two-hour River King en-US was one of the longest such water tours we en-US have experienced. en-US One of the most amazing things for us in en-US Sebastian was the variety of water views in en-US almost every direction. We had breakfast en-US every morning at the resorts Blackfins en-US Riverfront Grill, where we gazed out at the en-US harbor and Shipwreck Island in the en-US background. The restaurant is open for en-US three meals a day, and meals are also served en-US in the afternoons and evenings at the en-US Sandbar Beach Club.en-US Our first evening in Sebastian we dined at en-US the Mo-Bay Grill, a little piece of Jamaica en-US plopped down into the heart of Sebastian. en-US Owner Wesley Campbell cut his culinary en-US teeth on the island of his birth before en-US making a name for himself in Washington en-US D.C. for his personal take on Jamaican en-US cuisine. Named after his hometown of en-US Montego Bay, the restaurant offers a wide en-US variety of cuisine, both Jamaican and en-US otherwise, all accompanied by views of the en-US river through massive windows. We started en-US off with Green Herb Steamed Mussels as an en-US appetizer, whose tomato and garlic broth en-US was so savory we dipped the garlic toast in en-US it. While Gloria ordered one of our favorites, en-US Oxtail Stew, I ordered the Jerk Stuffed en-US Chicken Breast, filled with sauted mushen-US -en-US rooms and spinach. Mr. Campbells recipe en-US finally helped me overcame my fear of the en-US Scotch bonnet peppers and allspice that give en-US jerk spice its kick. Mo-Bays take on the en-US popular brown sauce was truly tasty, and the en-US sweet heat only served to compliment the en-US poultry. Both dishes were served with a en-US unique combination of sauted broccoli, en-US cabbage, carrots and green beans. For en-US dessert, we shared one of the best slices of en-US coconut pie Ive had outside of the Deep en-US South. en-US The next afternoon after our cruise, we en-US walked down to Squid Lips Overwater Grill en-US for a late lunch. I had noticed this unique en-US eatery during my early morning walk, en-US perched between two piers on pilings above en-US the river. What makes it even more special is en-US that its open on three sides to the elements, en-US so when we sat down at the table, we looked en-US over the wall of the restaurant and saw en-US catfish swimming below. Even though we en-US saw no way to really air condition the place, en-US the ceiling fans and cross breezes from the en-US north, south and east kept us comfortably en-US cool. Here we started out with the savory en-US Smoked Fish Dip, accompanied by the en-US restaurants own yummy Pineapple Coconut en-US Bimini Bread (our server Anita offered us en-US more, but I knew better or Id never finish en-US my flounder stuffed with lobster/crab meat en-US dressing. Gloria opted for the healthy en-US sounding Grilled Grouper glazed with en-US honey-lime sauce that had the tantalizing en-US taste of the grill in every bite. For dessert we en-US shared a piece of Mikes Key Lime Pie, en-US probably the most decadent form of this en-US dessert Ive ever eaten. en-US For lunch the next day, we headed just a en-US few steps away to The Crab Stop, a new spot en-US on the river thats an outgrowth of a en-US Downtown Vero Beach restaurant of the en-US same name. en-US Here we dined on the shady, open-air en-US deck overlooking the water, beginning our en-US experience with Fried Snow Crab, a en-US steaming chunk of the Alaskan crustacean en-US that is breaded and deep-fried before en-US serving. For an entre, Gloria opted for the en-US Scallop Snack Pack, a savory bowl of en-US steamed scallops, shrimp and boiled en-US red-skin potatoes, which we found to be en-US absolutely scrumptious. I ordered the en-US unique Caribbean Seafood Rice, the owners en-US take on a Cajun jambalaya with a similar en-US kick, a mixture of shrimp, sausage and crab en-US meat served in a grilled pineapple. I also en-US sampled one of the restaurants famed garlic en-US crabs and now know why theyre one of the en-US most popular dishes. For dessert, we en-US munched on corn fritters topped with en-US powdered sugar, which were very similar to en-US beignets, another of my New Orleans en-US favorites. en-US Of course, you cant leave Sebastian en-US without seeing the relics pulled off the en-US nearby sea floor by one of the worlds most en-US famous shipwreck salvagers, Mel Fisher. en-US Now run by his granddaughter, this small en-US but very interesting museum is dedicated to en-US his lifes work of uncovering the treasure and en-US relics from Spanish vessels on the bottom of en-US the ocean. Here you can actually see gold en-US and silver coins and relics from the 1715 en-US Fleet that sank during a hurricane off the en-US Sebastian Inlet. Youll also find Colombian en-US emeralds and gold and silver coins minted en-US during the time of the Conquest, with some en-USrelics even available for purchase. Be sure en-US and watch the 20-minute introductory video en-US that describes the treasure hunters early life en-US and his success in raising up the treasure en-US from Nuestra Seora de Atocha, his most en-US famous discovery of a vessel that sank in en-US 1622 west of the Florida Keys. en-US Shortly before leaving town our final day, en-US we hopped in the car and drove to the en-US Village Square, a unique shopping and en-US dining complex on the west side of U.S. 1 en-US near Main Street. Here Gloria browsed the en-US unique jewelry and clothing at Addicted 2 en-US Stuff, where she found bought a blouse and en-US a handmade bracelet, both at very reasonen-US -en-US able prices. en-US Weekend Wanderer is written by en-US award-winning travel and feature writer en-US Donald Rodrigue. en-US 20 en-USIen-USn the world of golf, a mulligan is a way en-US to get a do over without accepting the en-US consequences of the first shot. It is by no en-US means legal, and most golf purists frown on en-US the use of such a thing. This past weekend, en-US the United States Golf Association took en-US one, and we should be thankful for it. en-US The U.S. Open was held this past week en-US out on Long Island at Shinnecock Hills Golf en-US Club. In typical USGA fashion, the course en-US was difficult and penal to those who strayed en-US from the fairways, found bunkers or missed en-US the greens. In typical USGA fashion, there en-US were also some ridiculous things done to en-US the course all in the name of protecting en-US par.en-US Saturdays round began rather benignly en-US for those playing early. The breeze was en-US light, the air was cool and there was not a en-US cloud in the sky. Then lunchtime came and en-US it all went to hell.en-US The winds picked up and the course en-US began to dry out. Balls hit down the en-US fairways were getting too much roll and en-US winding up in the rough. And if you know en-US U.S. Open rough, you know what that does en-US to scoring.en-US Worse still, the greens began to dry out en-US and get crusty as some players put it. The en-US grass began to turn brown and putts began en-US to roll and roll and some even rolled off the en-US greens.en-US As the afternoon rolled on, things en-US continued to get worse. In an event where en-US par is considered a good score, just carding en-US a bogey on some holes became the quest. en-US Tony Finau and Daniel Berger started the en-US day 11 shots behind the leaders and were en-US fortunate to have made the cut. The pair en-US each shot 66 and at days end were atop the en-US leaderboard and playing in the final pairing en-US on Sunday.en-US How difficult was the afternoon? Rickie en-US Fowler shot 84. Dustin Johnson, the leader en-US by four shots entering the weekend en-US bogeyed six of his first eight holes. Even en-US Phil Mickelson was not immune to the en-US severity of the playing conditions, putting a en-US moving ball to keep it from rolling off the en-US green. Lefty wound up with a 10 on that en-US hole, and his round of 81 is his worst at the en-US U.S. Open. By days end, the entire field was en-US over par.en-US By design, the U.S. Open is intent on en-US being the toughest test in golf, both en-US mentally and physically. The USGA loves to en-US test the mental stability of the field by en-US setting up a course that will make you grind en-US out pars and bogeys, and even make you en-US angry. It has always been a test like no en-US other. en-US Many players complained about some of en-US the pin positions. As the day wore on, you en-US could tell that the USGA had made a mess en-US of a few holes with where the holes were en-US cut. The greens at Shinnecock Hills were en-US designed at a time when no one thought of en-US making them play this hard and roll this en-US fast. en-US After the round however, the USGA did en-US something surprising. They listened and en-US didnt just sit back and laugh at the players en-US struggling to play a game close to golf as we en-US know it come Sunday. Usually this is where en-US they really put the screws to everyone, sit en-US back and toast a glass to the carnage.en-US Instead the USGA watered the course. en-US They watered the greens to keep them from en-US truly becoming browns. The course wasnt en-US allowed to turn into cement. They set pins en-US in places where, if the winds picked up en-US again, you could still hope to keep a putt on en-US the green. They made the course manageen-US -en-US able.en-US Sunday rolled around and the course was en-US still tough, but it was manageable. It bit en-US those who hit loose shots or missed greens en-US and fairways. Thankfully, it rewarded good en-US shots and players had chances to hold en-US greens, make putts and move up the en-US leaderboard instead of waiting for some to en-US fall.en-US It was a great final round. Tommy en-US Fleetwood just missed a birdie at the last en-US that was for a round of 62. No one has ever en-US gone so low at a U.S. Open. Patrick Reed en-US charged up the leaderboard, making five en-US birdies in his first seven holes.en-US In the end we saw history. West Palm en-US Beachs Brooks Koepka became only the en-US seventh player to successfully defend his en-US U.S. Open title. His round of 68 came en-US thanks to a hot putter that saved his several en-US times on the back nine.en-US Lets hope that the USGA has learned en-US something from its mulligan. While we en-US want to see players tested, we dont want the en-US entire thing to fall apart into something not en-US even resembling golf. en-US Contact James Stammer at en-USstammergolf@en-US yahoo.com.en-USThe USGA took a mulligan GOLF en-USJAMES STAMMER en-USHighway, Stuart.
