en-US 16 en-GBTickets are available at Earthtones in Stuart en-GB or online at en-GBKaisMusicGarden.com.en-GBSATURDAY, JUNE 2 SUNDAY, JUNE 17en-GB en-GB 'Tuesdays with Morrie:' en-GBPresented by en-GB A.C.T. Studio Theatre, Cedar Pointe Plaza, en-GB 2399 S.E. Ocean Blvd., Stuart. A stage en-GB version of the best selling book by Mitch en-GB Alborn, in which an accomplished and en-GB career-driven journalist reunites with his en-GB former college professor, and what starts as en-GB a simple visit turns into a weekly pilgrimage en-GB and a last class in the meaning of life. Shows en-GB are June 2-3, June 8-10, and June 15-17. en-GB Show times are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 en-GB p.m., Sundays at 3 p.m. Reserved seating is en-GB $25. en-GB For tickets and information, call (772) en-GB 932-8880 or visit en-GB actstudiotheatre.com.en-GBSATURDAY, JUNE 2en-GB en-GB Bunfest 2018:en-GB Seventh annual event en-GB will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The en-USI en-USwas a member of the Volusia County en-US Emergency Management team that en-US helped during hurricane emergencies en-US for 15 years.en-US Its that time of year again and this en-US hurricane season may be a little busy, so lets en-US get ready. First, be sure to get the Hurricane en-US Preparation Guide that is available each en-US year; it provides great information.en-US Lets talk about how to get ready. My wife en-US is great about getting ready for the storm en-US season. She starts buying disaster food in en-US March and April a little at a time. She en-US follows all the sales and two for ones and we en-US are ready by June. en-US How do you plan to cook without power? en-US Do you have an outside grill? Great! Is it gas en-US operated or charcoal? Make sure you have en-US the fuel available to cook. I recommend en-US everyone have a small gas cooktop as a en-US backup. Chefs use them all the time for chef en-US stations at catering parties. They are not en-US expensive, about $20-$25, and operate on a en-US small gas tank the size of a hair spray can. en-US They are big enough to handle a large en-US frying pan or pot. en-US You will be able to cook for days and en-US cook almost anything. The local restaurant en-US supply stores have them. I give them as gifts en-US during Christmas. Look on the internet as en-US well. en-US A coffee pot is important; one that isnt en-US electric. People will be very upset without en-US their coffee. Buy a French press coffee pot. en-US Place ground coffee in the pot, then add hot en-US water and let it steep a couple minutes. en-US Press down the plunger top separating the en-US grinds from the coffee. This makes great en-US tasting coffee, and be sure you have ground en-US coffee, not k-cups. en-US A good-sized ice en-US chest is also helpful. en-US Have a good supply of en-US disposable plates, cups, en-US plasticware and paper en-US towels. You also need en-US trash bags and lots of en-US water. en-US Here are some en-US shopping ideas: Buy en-US protein drinks; shop for en-US the highest protein en-US value you can find for en-US high energy. Oatmeal en-US variety packs are great en-US because you just add en-US water and heat. en-US How about cereal en-US with milk? Powdered en-US milk is OK or try to en-US find shelf-stable milk in cartons. Evaporaten-US -en-US ed canned milk is milk that has the water en-US taken out. Add a can of water to a can of en-US evaporated milk and it will be regular milk. en-US Plastic portion cups of fruits are great; en-US get a variety and get juice mixes. en-US You should start stocking up on canned en-US goods like vegetables, canned chicken, tuna, en-US corned beef hash, and chili with no beans en-US (youll thank me later). Also consider en-US Spam, canned pasta with meatballs or meat en-US ravioli. Think about getting canned soups, en-US dry spaghetti, boxes of rice mixtures, and en-US mac and cheese. en-US Make sure you have all the staples too en-US like herbs, spices, sugar, cooking oil or en-US sprays, chips, pita chips, and nachos. Did en-US you know corn bread mix can be fried in a en-US frying pan for bread? en-US Now lets think about the food in the en-US refrigerator. After a few hours, the cooler en-US will be too hot to keep food safely. Cook en-US everything you can that is fresh. The freezer en-US may last up to two or three days if you keep en-US the door closed. en-US Refrigerated eggs have been washed, so en-US their protected cover is removed. Leaving en-US them out is not a good idea. Do you know a en-US local farmer? If you have farm fresh eggs en-US from the farm that have not been washed, en-US they can stay on the counter for many days. en-US Soft cheese needs to be refrigerated; hard en-US cheeses like Gouda and parmesan do not en-US need to be refrigerated.en-US Finally, write a menu of meals and snacks en-US for three to six days consumption. When en-US you plan, everyone will be happier knowing en-US what to expect. My recipe this week is: Step en-US 1, begin today to stock up; Step 2, be en-US prepared.en-US Costa Magoulas is dean of the Mori en-US Hosseini College of Hospitality and Culinary en-US Management at Daytona State College. en-US Contact him at (386) 506-3578 or en-US magoulc@ en-USdaytonastate.edu. & Get the List of Open House Stops along Colorado Ave. Details on StuartWineBar.com and eventbrite.com Everyone is Invited to doTHE COLORADO CRAWL! Meant for help en-USCommunity en-US Calendar en-USSTUART The regular city commisen-US -en-US sion meeting Monday had one agenda en-US item only, and it resulted in Stuart en-US Police Department Chief David Dyess en-US being installed as the interim city manen-US -en-US ager. Chief Dyess will now have to en-US name his own interim replacement en-US after being unanimously voted into the en-US position, which will be readdressed en-US sometime around Sept. 1 when a peren-US -en-US manent replacement is set to be named en-US to fill the role Dave Ross resigned on en-US May 4 after only seven months on the en-US job.en-US Chief Dyess was apparently the en-US overwhelming favorite by public supen-US -en-US port and among the city commission en-US and staff and could also find heavy en-USPolice Chief Dyess installed en-US as interim city manager en-USIsland en-US residents en-US bemoan en-US proposed en-US lighting en-USSTUART More than a dozen resien-US-en-US dents addressed the Metropolitan en-US Planning Organization May 7, comen-US-en-US plaining they had been left out of the en-US loop on Martin Countys plans to en-US install new streetlighting along AIA en-US and a new sidewalk along the western en-US edge of the roadway.en-US The Florida Department of Transen-US -en-US portation has already approved funden-US-en-US ing for the multimillion dollar project en-US and begun preliminary engineering en-US and design work. Only two people en-US spoke out in favor of the project, both en-US members of the Hutchinson Island en-US Coalition, the 17-member group that en-US has spearheaded both the lighting and en-US the sidewalk proposal for the last few en-US years. He is set to begin en-US work as interim city manager on May 29.en-US So many people that have suggested en-US Chief Dyess, and their reasons (are) its all en-US there; he grew up here in the city and hes en-US worked here in the city for decades and hes en-US been here at the city commission meetings en-US for the past seven years, Vice Mayor Becky en-US Bruner said. Before, we wanted to wait but en-US to me this is as one person told me a en-US no-brainer.en-US Commissioner Troy McDonald originalen-US-en-US ly supported Chief Dyess for the position en-US during the May 9 special meeting of the en-US commission, but in the end Louis Boglioli en-US III who is currently filling the acting city en-US manager position along with financial seren-US -en-US vices director was left in the position en-US until Mondays vote. Also, Chief Dyess will en-US receive a 10-percent bump in pay during en-US his tenure through late summer.en-US Ive had the opportunity over the last 28 en-US years to work with every department in the en-US city special projects, consults, HR en-US and we have solid employees in this city, en-US Chief Dyess said. They already excel, and en-US we are going to make sure that that's en-US brought to light.en-US Chief Dyess has been with the Stuart PD en-US for more than 30 years, and is a graduate of en-US both Martin County High School and Indien-US -en-US an River State College. When discussing en-US the selection, many commissioners touted en-US his close ties in the community and his lifeen-US -en-US long residency here. Commissioner Troy en-US McDonald also mentioned Chief Dyess as en-US a as a strong candidate for permanent city en-US manager once that decision has to be made.en-US I floated the idea at the meeting a couen-US -en-US ple of weeks ago about Chief Dyess because en-US Im a huge fan and I think hes going to do en-US great things for our city in the future, en-US Commissioner McDonald said. So, comen-US-en-US ments from both our commission meeting en-US a week and a half ago and speaking to en-US members of the public throughout the time en-US period, it is something we need to do as a en-US deliberate process. en-US Based on comments from the commisen-US-en-US sion, we need to have some workshops to en-US determine what the long-term role and job en-US description would be of the city manager. I en-US think that the permanent city manager en-US which I think and hope and pray will be en-US Dave Dyess that we need to give him a en-US chance to work into the job.en-US All commissioners have said in the past en-US that appointing an interim city manager, en-US who is not splitting duties with another job, en-US will give them time to more cautiously en-US decide the new city manager and develop en-US payment and job criteria that will more en-US likely result in a good fit for the city.en-US I cant tell you the number of people en-US that have called me and sent me emails en-US who have said nothing but wonderful en-US things about Chief Dyess, Mayor en-US Glass-Leighton said. I have 100-percent en-US confidence in him that he will make a great en-US city manager. en-US During this timeframe, we take the en-US time to meet and have public charettes and en-US getting input from the citizens to look back en-US and see what is important to the city and en-US what is important in being a city manager. TREASURE COAST While many peo en-US-en-US ple treat Memorial Day as a sales opportunien-US -en-US ty or three-day vacation, its actually a solen-US -en-US emn occasion to offer respect for those who en-US have paid the ultimate sacrifice through en-US their military service. While Veterans Day is en-US for all veterans to be celebrated and Armed en-US Forces Day honors those currently in unien-US-en-US form, Memorial Day provides many families en-US a chance to reflect on their loved ones who en-US died in battle and civilians to recognize that en-US freedom isnt free.en-US There is a series of events planned en-US up-and-down the Treasure Coast this weeken-US-en-US end at cemeteries and other sites that give en-US people a chance to get together and honor en-US veterans killed in action. en-US On Sunday, May 27, there will be the Reven-US -en-US erence Motorcycle Association's annual en-US Memorial Day weekend patriotic American en-US flag giveaway for people to stop by, stock-up en-US and take home a free personal American en-US flag and help support the Honor Guard en-US Motorcycle Associations mission to honor en-US and assist local Veterans, law enforcement en-US and emergency medical service heroes. There are en-US other objective sources of information on en-US cars, but this is the best. They accept no en-US advertising from anybody and their sole en-US goal is rigorously and objectively testing en-US merchandise that consumers buy. You can en-US very quickly find the best make car for the en-US model and style you want to buy. Consumer en-US Reports rates cars by performance, cost of en-US operation, safety, and frequency of repair.en-US 2. Test Drive the Car You Have Chosenen-US This step requires that you visit a car en-US dealership. Remember that this doesnt have en-US to be the dealership you buy from. You en-US obviously must see, touch, feel, and drive en-US the car that you think you want to buy. A en-US new car is a very personal thing and just en-US because Consumer Reports loved it doesnt en-US mean that you will. Be sure that you test en-US drive the car at all speeds in all road types en-US that you normally drive. Drive it in the city en-US but also on the expressway.en-US 3. Carefully Choose the Accessories You en-US Wanten-US There are some accessories that enhance en-US the value of your car and some that dont or en-US may even lower it. You should accessorize a en-US car comparably to its class. If you are en-US buying a lower priced economy car, you en-US should not load it up with leather seats and en-US an expensive sound system. If you do, you en-US wont recoup much of what you spent on en-US these accessories in its resale value. On the en-US other hand, if you are buying a luxury car, en-US dont skimp on items people look for in en-US luxury cars like a navigation system or a en-US moon roof.en-US 4. Carefully Choose your Cars Coloren-US This is more important in determining a en-US cars resale value than accessories. If you en-US want to maximize the trade-in value of this en-US car, choose a popular color. White, silver, en-US black, and beige are the 4 most popular en-US colors. Sports cars and convertibles are en-US exceptions and red is often the most en-US popular color. The difference in trade-in en-US value between the right color and the en-US wrong color can be several thousands of en-US dollars.en-US 5. Arrange Your Financingen-US Now that you know exactly what kind of en-US a car you are going to buy, you can check en-US with local banks and credit unions to find en-US the best interest rate. Dont commit until en-US you have chosen the dealer you will buy en-US from. Manufacturers sometimes offer very en-US low special rates and en-US dealers can someen-US -en-US times offer a lower en-US rate than your bank en-US or credit union.en-US 6. Shop Your en-US Trade-inen-US If you are trading en-US in a car, take it to 3 en-US dealerships for the en-US same make and ask en-US them how much they en-US will pay you for your en-US car. A Chevy dealer en-US will pay more for a en-US used Chevy and a Toyota dealer will pay en-US more for a used Toyota. If you live near a en-US CarMax store, get a price from them too. en-US They have a reputation of paying more en-US money for trade-ins than most dealers. en-US Dont commit to the highest bid, but give en-US the dealer you buy from a chance to beat en-US that price.en-US 7. Shop for the Best Price on the Interneten-US Go to the manufacturers Web site. The en-US addresses are all very intuitive. Ford en-US iswww.Ford.com, Honda iswww.Honda.en-US com, and Toyota is iswwwToyota.com. You en-US can type in your zip code and get the Web en-US sites of all your local dealers. Depending on en-US how far you are willing to drive to pick up en-US your new car, request price quotes from as en-US many dealers as you like, but be sure you en-US get at least 3 quotes. When you have chosen en-US the lowest price, verify that this price is en-US out-the-door with only tax and tag, en-US GOVERNMENT FEES ONLY, added. You en-US can also check with third party sources en-US likewww.TrueCar.com. en-US 4 772-207-4599If you are considering selling contact us for a professional to sit with you first Clean power is critical for your computer en-USLen-USets talk about power. Not the kind of en-US pen-USower that we usually think of when en-US we think of computers and power. I en-US dont mean processor power measured in en-US gigahertz or anything like that. Lets talk en-US about the power that your computer en-US needs to run. Good, old-fashioned AC en-US power all computers need it to function, en-US but not many people understand just how en-US critical clean power is for the proper en-US operation of a machine. en-US The power we get raw out of the wall en-US can fluctuate, sometimes wildly, due to en-US any number of environmental issues en-US from thousands of users suddenly kicking en-US on their air conditioning all at the same en-US time to solar flares causing glitches in the en-US power grid. In order to clean up power, en-US its recommended to plug a surge suppresen-US -en-US sor into your wall outlet and then plug en-US your computer equipment into that. But en-US what does that do? How does that help en-US ensure that your machine is getting that en-US squeaky clean power that it needs? en-US Well, surge suppressors are devices that en-US are designed to clean up the normal en-US fluctuations in power that is common on en-US all power grids by keeping the voltage at a en-US constant cycle. The surge suppressor will en-US clip off any spikes in the voltage that en-US could cause damage to sensitive hardware en-US in your computer, but there are some en-US things that your average surge suppressor en-US cant do anything about. en-US For instance, if the voltage drops due to en-US a brown out, your surge suppressor cant en-US really do anything about that (its an en-US under-voltage situation, not an en-US over-voltage or surge) and if you take en-US a direct hit from a lightning strike, forget en-US about it; all bets are off. A lightning strike en-US has so much power behind it (think en-US hotter than the sun) that it usually flows en-US right through your average surge suppresen-US -en-US sor, toasting everything in its path, en-US including the surge suppressor itself! en-US Many people are really surprised to learn en-US after suffering from a lightning strike that en-US their surge suppressor did nothing to en-US protect their equipment. The mistake here en-US is that people think of lightning as just en-US another surge in power, and the surge en-US suppressor is there to handle surges. en-US Unfortunately thats not entirely the case. en-US For a direct lightning strike, there is not en-US much available to protect equipment save en-US unplugging all your equipment during a en-US storm. And with the frequency of storms en-US that we get around here, thats not always en-US practical. en-US OK, so that covers lightning, but what en-US about a brown out? A brown out is a en-US phenomenon that is just the opposite of en-US the surge. When everyone suddenly kicks en-US on their AC and all the lights go dim for a en-US few seconds or even minen-US-en-US utes, that lower voltage en-US can often cause machines en-US to act squirrelly. But en-US since its a low voltage en-US situation instead of a en-US surge in voltage, most of en-US your basic surge suppresen-US -en-US sors are unable to supply en-US the extra power to keep it en-US at the proper levels for en-US your computer. en-US And then there are the en-US outright power outages en-US that can last for seconds, en-US minutes and even hours. en-US For these kinds of power en-US conditions, the best thing en-US you can add to your en-US system is an Uninterruptible Power en-US Supply (also known as a UPS or en-US Battery Backup.) en-US Most battery backup systems come en-US equipped with surge suppressor circuitry en-US so you get the best of both worlds; you get en-US the benefit of clipping over voltage spikes en-US from your system, and you get a constant en-US flow of balanced electricity regardless of en-US whether the power coming from the wall en-US drops due to a brown out or cuts out en-US altogether.en-US The thing to keep in mind about UPS en-US systems is that they are not designed to en-US allow you to keep working through a en-US power outage; they are there to allow you en-US just enough time to save your work and en-US do a controlled and proper shutdown of en-US your system rather than having the en-US system just drop out on you. en-US In a nutshell, the least desirable way to en-US set up your computer equipment is to just en-US plug everything right into the wall. The en-US next best thing is to plug your equipment en-US into a surge suppressor of some type; that en-US way you at least have a way to clean any en-US normal spikes from your power. en-US The best solution is to get a UPS and en-US plug your monitor and tower alone into it. en-US That protects you from spikes and en-US brownouts and full-blown power outages.en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. The en-US writer asked why internet services are not en-US offered as a utility at lower cost to users. en-US The answer is very simple. The giant coren-US -en-US porations which control the internet DON'T en-US WANT people to have better service at en-US lower cost, and they spend a lot of the en-US money that they make from their customers en-US PAYING lawmakers to pass laws to keep en-US their profits rolling in.en-US Internet as a utility is blocked or outlawed en-US in TWENTY States, and most of which are en-US controlled by Republican legislatures and en-US Governors, including Florida. These state en-US laws are developed under extreme pressure en-US from the giant telecom corporations, which en-US spend tens of millions of dollars each year to en-US block cheap internet for all. en-US Here is what the website BroadBandNow.en-US com says about Florida: "Florida is a tough en-US place to start a municipal network for two en-US primary reasons: excessive taxes on municien-US -en-US pal broadband projects and extreme vetting en-US requirements that make it difficult for projen-US-en-US ects to get approved. Florida is one of the en-US only states that levies unique, specific ad en-US valorum taxes on municipal providers. en-US Municipal broadband projects are also en-US required to recoup investment within four en-US years, which is virtually impossible for neten-US-en-US works in the infrastructure-starved areas en-US that can benefit from public broadband the en-US most."en-US Also, the Republican-controlled Federal en-US Communications Commission (FCC) en-US under guidance from the new Republican en-US President, recently eliminated the regulaen-US -en-US tions for Net Neutrality which kept costs en-US lower for consumers. These regulations en-US were strongly defended by President Obama en-US during his Presidency but no one underen-US -en-US stood what he was fighting for until it was en-US too late. Now they are gone and costs will en-US keep going up.en-US Republicans in Congress also recently en-US passed a law which allows internet providers en-US to SELL your personal information which en-US they collect WITHOUT your consent, to en-US make even more money, which they can en-US then use to pressure legislators to give them en-US laws that make them even richer at your en-US expense.en-US It is vital that every American understand en-US that their Legislators in their state and their en-US Representatives in Washington MUST be en-US watched very closely and must HEAR what en-US the people WANT them to do. If they do en-US not vote for laws that you WANT, then you en-US must be prepared to vote for someone else en-US who will. Then you must keep a close eye on en-US the PROMISES they make and what they en-US ACTUALLY do when they get into office.en-US A quick footnote: most European counen-US -en-US tries offer government provided internet en-US service, (cable TV, data, 5G cellphone and en-US high-speed internet) for about $40 per en-US month!en-US America is STILL a democracy, but only if en-US We the People WANT to keep it that way!en-USOverdosed on spamen-USIs there someone out there who can tell en-US me how to get rid of spam?en-US I am so sick and tired of delete, delete, en-US delete. The spam messages en-US are mixed in with my friends' messages. en-US Lately, it's not bad enough I get one spam en-US message from a sender, but they come in en-US two or three at a time from the same sender. en-US I can't even ask to be taken off their address en-US list, because there is nowhere to send that en-US request. en-US We all get a certain amount of time here en-US on Earth, and it just amazes me that people en-US can waste that time by being spammers. The current cart storen-US -en-US age structure can not be more than 10 years en-US old. There appears to be nothing wrong with en-US the structure. It works, why throw it away en-US and spend more money? I also don't underen-US -en-US stand the desire for someone to see the road en-US from the driving range. When I use the en-US range, I want some privacy. The range is fine en-US and the practice chipping /sand trap is ok.en-US The size of the clubhouse should be deteren-US -en-US mined by projected use. Will it include a en-US bar? Will it include lockers for the men and en-US women like the original structure? Have it en-US determined by projected/realistic use and en-US with professional help. The organization will host its inauguen-US -en-US ral tourney that is designed toprevent en-US veterans from becoming homeless and to en-US provide free transportation to the Veterans en-US Administration Hospital in West Palm en-US Beach and give folks a chance to enjoy a day en-US on the links.en-US The event will be hosted on Saturday, en-US June 9 at Palm Cove Golf & Yacht Club in en-US Palm City, which is located at2362 S.W. en-US Carriage Hill Terr. in Palm City. Tournaen-US -en-US ment organizer Don Archibald said he has en-US been canvassing the community for support en-US and hopes he can translate the importance en-US of the event to the countys more than en-US 14,000 veterans.en-US Were looking to get some fundraisers en-US going and I play golf, and this was the first en-US thing I thought about and it just seemed to en-US go from there, said Mr. Archibald, who also en-US serves as the vice chairman of the Veterans en-US Council of Martin County. We transport in en-US excess of 2,000 people to the VA Hospital en-US down there and back each year, and this also en-US goes to benefit the veterans homeless and en-US needy fund, which is for people who need a en-US house payment or car payment because they en-US are in a bind.en-US If they need some cash, we go ahead and en-US take care of that, too.en-US There is a host of action associated with en-US the event, and the fee includes 18 holes of en-US golf with a cart included in the price, a conen-US-en-US tinental breakfast, lunch, prizes, raffles and en-US gratuities. en-US 10 all points of the island. en-USHutchison Island resident Ralph Jones en-US particularly resented the fact that Mr. Calen-US -en-US das mentioned support from some of the en-US owners of his condominium complex, the en-US Suntide. Both Mr. Caldas and Mr. Jones en-US had previously addressed the Board en-US during the April 16 meeting, and the latter en-US said the former ended that meeting with en-US figures that werent exactly accurate.en-US All of you were left to believe that 75 en-US percent of the residents of Suntide were en-US for the lighting project, as well as the en-US majority of the residents on the island en-US because the presidents of some HOAs en-US were for it, he said. The gentleman en-US claimed he had 41 signatures of residents en-US of Suntide that were in favor of the lighten-US -en-US ing. There are 140 residents in Suntide. en-US Based on accurate figures, those in favor en-US would be 30 percent. He was trying to give en-US you the impression that all the residents in en-US those associations were in favor of the en-US lighting project.en-US His wife, Patricia Jones, also spoke to en-US the Board and claimed FDOT had reclasen-US-en-US sified the project as decorative lighting en-US and no longer regarded it as a safety projen-US -en-US ect.en-US Martin County code states decorative en-US lighting is prohibited within sightline of en-US the beach, she said. These lights en-US shouldnt be installed at all. You arent en-US safety experts, Hutchinson IC is not safety en-US experts, FDOT is. They conen-US -en-US cluded in their crash report en-US that this lighting was not waren-US -en-US ranted for roadway safety.en-US Another Suntide resident, en-US Ed Foster, likewise disputed the safety en-US aspect of the proposed streetlights slated en-US to run from the Jensen Beach roundabout en-US southward to the Stuart Causeway.en-US Ive heard a lot about safety this mornen-US -en-US ing, but if you look at the facts, there have en-US been only 16 accidents along this stretch en-US of A1A in three years, he said. Of those en-US 16, 10 were either at the entrance to Indian en-US River Plantation or at the Jensen rounden-US -en-US about. That leaves only six along the whole en-US stretch of road that you want to put lights en-US on. Of those, only one occurred at night in en-US an unlighted portion -one in three years. en-US There is no justification for the project, en-US and planning light poles every 50 feet en-US along A1A will destroy the character of en-US the island.en-US Many island residents in opposition, en-US such as Gail Florin, prefer the darkness to en-US losing the islands rural feel.en-US We bought in 1987, drawn to the prisen-US -en-US tine nature and absolute charm of en-US Hutchinson Island, she said. Over the en-US years we have watched the urban sprawl en-US and destruction of so much of Florida. Im en-US here to voice my strong opposition to the en-US forced urbanization of Hutchinson Island en-US with this unnecessary and undesirable en-US lighting project along A1A.en-US Anglers Cove resident Paul Flood was en-US one of several residents who said they only en-US heard recently about the project. Mr. en-US Flood thinks the county ought to use en-US existing concrete power points to mount en-US any new lighting to save money and spare en-US the natural character of the roadway.en-US Im not so sure this is a brilliant idea, en-US and this has never come up at Anglers en-US Cove at all, he said, waving a notification en-US he found on his windshield. The first en-US time I knew anything about this was this en-US past Friday when I got this on my car.en-US Todd Berwick, the president of the en-US Beachwood Villas Homeowners Associaen-US-en-US tion, echoed those sentiments.en-US I dont believe the majority of the peoen-US -en-US ple on the island knew of this project, he en-US said. As president of our association, I en-US know weve never heard about the project en-US until last Sunday. Having just found out en-US about this a week ago, I contacted 14 peoen-US -en-US ple that live in our complex, and 13 of en-US them were not in favor of this project. Im en-US also in favor of taking some of the 165 en-US existing poles and using some of those for en-US lighting as opposed to putting an addien-US -en-US tional 382 poles up and down the beach.en-US A couple of the other speakers said they en-US were still undecided on the issue, while en-US Hutchinson Island realtor Sean Mann en-US insisted the community needed the new en-US sidewalk and lights for added safety and en-US security,en-US There have already been too many en-US incidences along this stretch of the road, en-US and no one wants to see this continue, he en-US said. If the current proposal for the end of en-US daylight savings time in Florida passes, en-US then these dark morning hours will extend en-US throughout the year, putting even more en-US people at risk. The opponents of the projen-US-en-US ect feel that the poles needed for this en-US would be a blemish. I say the lack of conen-US-en-US sideration for our own peoples safety is so en-US much more than that: Itd be a travesty.en-US Metropolitan Planning Organization en-US Chairman Vinny Barile then asked MPO en-US Administrator Beth Beltran for some hisen-US -en-US torical background on the project and en-UShow she notifies people of upcoming projen-US -en-US ects. She said the streetlighting and sideen-US -en-US walk proposal has been a priority for the en-US Board since 2012. en-US We always advertise all of our public en-US meetings, she said. It goes through all of en-US our committees. on the county website en-US and on their email blasts, as well as in the en-US newspaper and on our website.en-US Martin County Commission Chairman en-US and MPO Board Member Ed Ciampi en-US insisted the board should make sure it was en-US hearing the opinions of all the residents en-US and not just a select few.en-US I just want to make sure whether we en-US move forward with the project or not, that en-US as an organization, whether were relying en-US on the Hutchison Island Coalition, that en-US [all] residents have an opportunity to en-US know about it, he said. Id like to make en-US sure that if were relying on an ad hoc en-US group of residents or citizens, that they en-US have their ducks in order when they come en-US forward to us to say this is what we all colen-US -en-US lectively want.en-US The project was not officially scheduled en-US on the MPOs agenda that evening, and no en-US other board members offered comment. en-USLightingen-USFrom page 1 EOE, we drug test Please send resume to: opportunity@hometownnewsol.com and address to Anna-Marie Menhenott, Managing Editor. Mr. Rendells unique way of interacten-US -en-US ing with his students, particularly in the cafen-US -en-US eteria when hes not actually teaching them, en-US demonstrates one of the unique aspects that en-US got the judges attention.en-US Each and every day, I walk through my en-US schools cafeteria and students from various en-US grade levels hold up an example of someen-US -en-US thing healthy they have in their lunches, he en-US said. This may not sound very exciting, but en-US when Ihave parents share with me that their en-US child -who hates to eat anything healthy en-US but asks to please put something healthy in en-US their lunch so they can show Mr. Rendell en-US its very special and rewarding in its own en-US way.en-US A Michigan native and graduate of Puren-US -en-US due University, Mr. Rendell changed his en-US major to elementary education while en-US attending college on a wrestling scholarship.en-US During college I traveled all over the en-US United States putting on several wrestling en-US camps, he explained. This is when I was en-US first introduced to working with young chilen-US -en-US dren. I obviously loved the impact I was en-US making and quickly changed my major to en-US education.en-US Since arriving in Martin County, the PE en-US teacher has created, organized and impleen-US -en-US mented several athletic activities for area en-US children, including First Tee golf events, en-US bicycle Olympics, C.G.E. He said his favorite en-US part of being a PE teacher are the long-term en-US relationships he gets to develop with his en-US young students. en-US I am lucky enough to loop with my same en-US students from their time in kindergaren-US -en-US tenthrough their fifth-grade year, he en-US said. This means I have most students paren-US -en-US ticipate in my classes and school-wide en-US events for all six years of their time in eleen-US -en-US mentary school. I truly develop a personal en-US rapport with each and every student and en-US their families here at Citrus Grove. I have en-US developed a strong trusting bond with my en-US students that fosters respect and a lifelong en-US friendship.en-US Mr. Rendell now heads into the Shape en-US America Society of Health and Physical en-US Educators Southern District competition to en-US compete against physical education teachers en-US from 12 different states, a fact that has him en-US really pumped. en-US Wow, he said. In fact, phosphorus is banned year-en-US round, unless you have a soil or plant tissue test showing a en-US phosphorus deficiency.en-US Adhering to the summertime application ban is one way en-US our citizens can be part of the solution to protect our water en-US resources one lawn at a time. en-US Martin Countys fertilizer restrictions aim to reduce the en-US amount of harmful nutrients entering local water bodies, a en-US crucial step toward improving and maintaining water qualien-US -en-US ty. Nutrients primarily nitrogen and phosphorus are key en-US ingredients in lawn fertilizer. This multifaceted model actively involves en-US the public, law enforcement, social service agencies and en-US their clients to participate in learning the effect that poverty en-US has on the entire community and provide a better underen-US -en-US standing of how to help people move out of poverty. Hosted en-US by House of Hope and funded by the Martin County Comen-US-en-US munity Foundations Francis Langford Fund, the Law en-US Enforcement Training segment of the Bridges Out of Poveren-US -en-US ty program took place May 11 at the City of Stuart Police en-US Department.en-US The law enforcement element of the training stems from en-US Jodi Pfarrs industry-standard book, Tactical Communicaen-US-en-US tion, which guides first responders to better utilize commuen-US -en-US nication skills to control the scene, stay safe, and garner en-US cooperation and respect with the people they encounter en-US from all socio-economic backgrounds. The workshop is taien-US -en-US lored to help first responders understand the driving forces en-US in poverty in order to be more effective on each call and en-US receive fewer complaints. Having local law enforcement en-US eager to learn from this course is a critical component to the en-US effectiveness of the program overall given their daily interen-US -en-US action with the community and various situations they are en-US tasked with managing.en-US Staff from City of Stuart Police, Martin County Sheriffs en-US Office, and House of Hope participated in a daylong session en-US facilitated by Gary Rudick. When en-US you plan, everyone will be happier knowing en-US what to expect. en-US 17 en-USTREASURE COAST There are 14 famien-US-en-US lies along the Treasure Coast who represent en-US the Gold Star community, and they can en-US recognize Memorial Day in a different way en-US than most others. For Linda Schumann en-US who lost her son in the Iraq War the events en-US of the day lead to a somber remembrance of en-US Specialist Jordan Schumann. But her memen-US -en-US bership in the Gold Star community helps en-US motivate her to remind people about the en-US sacrifices of all those killed in action.en-US Spc. Schumann, was killed on July 5, 2011 en-US in Paktya Province, Afghanistan at only 24 en-US years old when the vehicle he was driving en-US was sent to assist another squad and was hit en-US by a roadside bomb. Spc. Schumann was a en-US native Port St. Lucie man who graduated en-US from St. Lucie West Centennial High School en-US in 2006. en-US He was born-and-raised here and he was en-US a community kid; everybody knew him so en-US everybody showed up and it was standen-US -en-US ing-room-only at Westside, Mrs. Schumann en-US said. It was heart-wrenching, but I was so en-US proud of the outpouring that came out for en-US him.en-US Mrs. Schumann is the new president of en-US the Indian River/St. Lucie County Gold Star en-US Mothers, which opened in February. She en-US will be attending the Memorial Day event in en-US Vero Beach at Veterans Memorial Island en-US Sanctuary which is located at 3001 Riveren-US -en-US side Drive at 9 a.m., on Monday, May 28.en-US We try to get to the different ones en-US (Memorial Day celebrations) and Im glad en-US everybody is trying to put something en-US together, she said. I think people underen-US -en-US stand that its not a happy holiday, where en-US everybody shoots off fireworks and has a big en-US picnic; its more of a solemn-type thing.en-US Mrs. Schumann said its imperative that en-US people know that their freedom isnt free, en-US and she still has a son Jason Schumann en-US who is serving as a US Army military en-US policeman and is four years from retireen-US-en-US ment, as do so many Treasure Coast famien-US -en-US lies. These families, she added, also have a en-US full understanding that their loved-ones are en-US in daily danger. en-US You take a whole different look when en-US you have kids that are serving, you look at it en-US one way, she said. But when you lose one, en-US its like a panoramic view because you see en-US the whole picture. Memorial Day is probaen-US-en-US bly the most sacred veterans holiday for us, en-US because it is a time to thank those who have en-US given their lives while serving the country en-US so everybody can do what theyre doing en-US whatever that may be.en-US Gold Star families have regular get-toen-US -en-US gethers and they offer each other support. en-US But they also visit people and try to ensure en-US the sacrifices of their relatives are not foren-US -en-US gotten.en-US Its just a constant education, and thats en-US what the Gold Star Mothers are all about is en-US educating, Mrs. Schumann said. A lot of us en-US didnt have a clue what it was to be a Gold en-US Star Parent until we became one.en-US Its not one of those clubs that anybody en-US want to belong in; this was a very hard club en-US to get into and its a daily reminder. We give en-US back to keep our boys alive in memory.en-US For more information about Gold Star en-US families on the Treasure Coast, please visit en-US http://uvslcinc.org/gold-star-memorial/. 2017 2017 C H O I C E R E A D E R S Place your ad in this special section. The most common plant to harbor en-US this picturesque plant is the Live Oak. en-US Although not something you can usually en-US buy at the local nursery, fresh Spanish Moss en-US can be obtained (cleaned) from places such en-US as Amazon. If you live in an area with lots en-US of Oak trees, you can obtain a few strands en-US from these trees naturally, with permission en-US from the property owners. en-US Spanish Moss or Tillandsia usneoides, is en-US actually a flowering plant that belongs to en-US the Bromeliad family. Although you would en-US not know by looking at it, it is in the same en-US family of plants that produces pineapples.en-US The plant can be found in many locations en-US along the East Coast of the US and is quite en-US commonly seen in Florida. There is a en-US misconception that the moss feeds and take en-US nutrients away from the host tree but this is en-US simply not true. Spanish Moss is not a en-US parasite that feeds from its host. It does no en-US harm or damage to the tree. I have had the en-US moss in my oak trees for over 30 years with en-US no harmful consequences and I just love the en-US look it gives the tree! The moss will only use en-US the tee as means for support.en-US The plant gets everything it needs from en-US rainwater, sunlight and air just like most en-US other plants in your garden. In fact, the en-US moss actually absorbs water from naturally en-US occurring rain right through the plant itself. en-US There have been instances where you en-US might see a dead branch with moss hanging en-US from it. It should be noted that the moss en-US had nothing to do with the tree dying. The en-US tree would have died from other causes. en-US Spanish Moss spreads from place to place en-US with tiny airborne seeds that travel with the en-US breeze, much like many common weed en-US seeds. If the seed lands in a favorable en-US location, it will grow. The most common en-US way of obtaining moss is by gathering it en-US from areas that are established and en-US manually placing it on the branches of your en-US choice. If too much is growing in one en-US location, you can easily move some to any en-US location you desire. en-US In the olden days, the moss was actually en-US used to stuff furniture! The last remaining en-US factory was in Gainesville and it burned en-US down in 1958. en-US In the unlikely event that you get it on en-US your trees and you do not like the way it en-US looks, it has to be removed. There are no en-US approved ways of killing Spanish Moss. en-US Removing it manually is also the best way en-USto help the environment without using any en-US chemicals. en-US As with all plants, it is always best to try en-US natural ways to control weeds and insects en-US first before resorting to chemicals. There en-US are occasions when natural means will en-US simply not work and a garden chemical en-US must be used. I always urge you to try en-US natural methods first to help save the en-US environment. en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years experien-US -en-US ence in gardening and landscape.
